Embark on a journey into a new era of river cruising with the PS Australian Star—a vessel that not only bears a name steeped in heritage and pride but also represents the pinnacle of luxury on the iconic Murray River.

Scheduled for a grand launch in June 2025, the PS Australian Star will redefine river cruising, offering year-round, all-inclusive, overnight experiences with 3, 4, and 7-night itineraries along the majestic Murray River, commencing from the charming town of Echuca in Victoria. Seamlessly taking over the reins of the beloved PS Emmylou, the Australian Star will assume the helm of the existing cruise itineraries, promising a voyage that seamlessly blends tradition with opulence.

As you step onto the decks of the PS Australian Star, you enter a realm where every detail tells a tale of the river’s rich heritage and the golden age of paddle steamers. The vessel itself is a masterpiece, a floating testament to the artistry and engineering that defined an era. Immerse yourself in the symphony of steam from the authentic 1907 wood-fired steam engine and the rhythmic churning of the paddlewheel as we embark on a leisurely voyage along the winding waters of the Murray River.

Named in honour of Australia’s celestial Southern Cross, the Australian Star invites you to explore its opulent interiors, where each cabin and lounge exudes an air of refinement. From the Hopwood Lounge & Bar, celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of Echuca’s founder, to the Randell Dining Room, paying homage to the pioneering journey of William Randell, every space aboard is a chapter in a captivating narrative that unfolds with every river bend.

Boasting 19 plush and modern staterooms, each opening to a deck and featuring an ensuite, air-conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi, luxury linen, and a TV entertainment system, the Australian Star ensures a luxurious retreat for every traveler. Moreover, its ever-changing river views provide a constant reminder of the beauty that surrounds.

As the PS Australian Star prepares to grace the waters, it beckons you to join a voyage where tradition meets modernity, and luxury becomes an art form.  Welcome aboard the PS Australian Star, where history and luxury converge for an unforgettable riverine experience.

  • Australian Star is being built in a specially designed facility beside the Murray River in Mildura and, after her launch in June 2025, will offer year-round, all-inclusive, overnight 3, 4 and 7 night cruises on the Murray River from Echuca in Victoria.
  • PS Australian Star will gracefully assume the helm, seamlessly taking over the reins of the existing 3, 4, and 7-night cruise itineraries that were previously operated by the iconic PS Emmylou.  The vessel will be Australia’s first five-star river cruise product, the largest paddlesteamer in the Southern Hemisphere and the only wood-fired, five-star, accommodated paddlesteamer in the world.
  • Fusing heritage charm with contemporary elegance and luxury, the 35m-long Australian Star will boast a deluxe and contemporary lounge offering sweeping river vistas, a fine-dining restaurant, multiple outdoor relaxation areas, the company’s first elevator for easy access to all levels, and 19 plush and modern staterooms, all opening to a deck and offering an ensuite, air-conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi, luxury linen and a TV entertainment system as well as ever-changing river views.
  • Australian Star will sport a modern, energy-efficient, hybrid diesel/steam propulsion system featuring a vintage, refurbished 1907 Richard Garrett and Sons wood-fired steam engine, adding a touch of nostalgia and authenticity to the journey.

Introducing PS Australian Star: A Name Steeped in Heritage and Elegance

At the helm of our newly-built historic paddlesteamer, PS Australian Star, lies a name carefully crafted to embody the essence of tradition, national pride, and a commitment to excellence. Each element of this distinguished name represents a profound significance that encapsulates the journey passengers will embark upon as they traverse the waters aboard this majestic vessel.

Honouring Maritime Heritage with “PS”: The prefix “PS,” standing for “Paddle Steamer,” pays homage to a rich and storied era in maritime history. It nods to the traditional mode of propulsion that powered the iconic steamboats of yesteryears. As we embrace the nostalgia and elegance of paddlewheel steamers, “PS” represents our reverence for time-honoured maritime traditions.

A Celebration of Australian Identity: “Australian Star” embodies more than just a name; it is a symbol deeply ingrained in the Australian national identity. By proudly bearing this name, PS Australian Star embraces the spirit and character of Australia, paying a special tribute to the iconic Southern Cross constellation. We aim to create an experience that echoes the vast beauty, resilience, and allure of this remarkable nation.

The Stellar Promise of Excellence: “Star” shines brightly in our vessel’s name, representing our commitment to excellence, luxury, and distinction. It reflects our aspiration to provide an unparalleled cruising experience that sparkles with sophistication and leaves an indelible mark on every passenger’s journey.

Uniqueness and Memorability: PS Australian Star was chosen for its uniqueness and memorability. This name stands as a beacon in the maritime world, distinguishing our vessel and promising a remarkable voyage, where history meets modern luxury in an unforgettable blend.

A Name Steeped in Essence: In every ripple of the water, every turn of the paddlewheel, and every moment spent aboard, PS Australian Star encapsulates a unique narrative. It symbolises a vessel that bridges the past with the present, inviting passengers to relish the timeless charm of an iconic paddlesteamer while savouring the elegance and comfort of contemporary cruising.

As we set sail on this historic vessel, the name “PS Australian Star” becomes more than just an identity—it becomes a promise. A promise of an exceptional voyage, filled with the warmth of tradition, the pride of nationhood, and the brilliance of a stellar cruising experience.

What are the best river cruises in Australia?

The best river cruises in Australia include the Riverboat Postman on the Hawkesbury River, Daintree River crocodile cruises and Murray River paddlesteamer tours in Echuca.

River cruises in Australia can be a great way of seeing the country’s nature, wildlife and geographical wonders. Some are better than others, but whether you want to play at being postman, watch crocodiles or pass through towering gorges, there’s probably an Australian riverboat trip that’ll suit your tastes.

River cruises in Sydney

The most famous cruises in Sydney are on Sydney Harbour . Taking the Manly ferry from Circular Quay is generally seen as the cheap option, but you can go the other way and take the Parramatta River Ferry to Parramatta instead.

Sydney has other rivers, however. The Hawkesbury River marks the city’s northern boundary. Here, the Riverboat Postman hops between small Hawkesbury River communities, delivering the mail. Passengers are invited along for the ride.

The Nepean River marks Sydney’s western boundary, and this is where the Nepean Belle paddlewheeler plies its trade from Penrith . A variety of cruises are available, but the lunchtime cruise through Nepean Gorge is the best bet.

Elsewhere in New South Wales , the River Lady heads along the Darling River and Menindee Lakes, offering insight into outback life.

Murray River cruises in Australia

The Murray River is Australia’s longest river , and there are cruise options most of the way along it before the Mouth of the Murray empties out from the Coorong . The best spot for Murray River cruises, however, is Echuca . Here, the historic wharf at the Port of Echuca is the departure point for several Murray River paddlesteamer cruises . Hour-long pootles along the river are available on the cheap if you’ve got a tight budget.

Australian river cruises in Tasmania

Australia’s smallest state , Tasmania , has several river cruise options. From Hobart, Iron Pot Cruises heads down the Derwent River to the Iron Pot lighthouse. In the wild west of the state, the Arcadia II ventures through rainforest along the Pieman River from the former goldrush settlement of Corinna .

The Arcadia II Pieman River Cruise from Corinna in Tasmania

River cruises in Australia: Brisbane and Queensland

2032 Olympic host city Brisbane is based around the Brisbane River , with several ferry services linking the banks. The best value for money ferry trip is from central Brisbane to Eat Street Northshore . But the smart move is probably taking the Miramar cruise to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in the riverside suburb of Fig Tree Pocket .

Further north in Queensland on the Sunshine Coast in Noosa , the Noosa River passes through the Noosa Everglades. Everglades Ecosafaris runs idyllic cruises up the Noosa River , focusing on the nature. Expect plenty of birdlife and big goannas on the banks.

There are even bigger reptiles to spot in northern Queensland. This is crocodile country, and most river tours here understandably focus on deadly saltwater crocodiles . The Proserpine River near Airlie Beach supposedly has the highest concentration of crocodiles in Australia. Whitsunday Crocodile Safari heads out along the river to see as many big crocs as possible.

Alternative crocodile cruises are available on the Daintree River north of Cairns . The Daintree River cruises depart from near the Daintree ferry , and make a logical addition to the drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation .

Australian river cruises in the Northern Territory

There are also several crocodile cruises in the Northern Territory . Technically, the Yellow Water cruise in World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park and the Corroboree Billabong cruise just outside are on billabongs that are part of river systems, rather than rivers themselves.

But a little further south in Nitmiluk National Park near Katherine , the Katherine River offers distinctly different cruises. Here, towering sandstone gorges rise up steeply from the river banks. Katherine Gorge cruises take in the national park’s rugged, dramatic splendour, although Katherine Gorge canoe tours are arguably more satisfying.

River cruises in Western Australia

Perth is based around the Swan River. Several cruises head up into the Swan Valley – the oldest wine region in Western Australia . But if all you want to do is explore Perth, the delightful little solar powered boats of the Little Ferry Co are a great bet. They depart from Elizabeth Quay .

Alternatively you can take the Rottnest Express ferry the other way down the Swan River. You’ll hopefully spot dolphins and black swans on the way past Fremantle to quokka-heavy Rottnest Island .

Australian River Cruises

Australian river cruises are available along several rivers generally as day cruises. There are travel companies that feature houseboat rentals along some of the rivers, and very few that offer traditional overnight river cruises.

The rivers in Australia tend to be shorter than other rivers around the world that offer river cruises. Some are less than fifty miles long and are often connected to several other bodies of water, including other rivers, lakes, creeks, bays and the Indian or Pacific Ocean.

Most rivers in Australia are located on the continent’s eastern side.

Overnight River Cruises

The Murray River is 1,476 miles long and is the longest river in Australia. It rises in the Australian Alps. The river forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria and flows through several lakes before emptying into the Indian Ocean

The Murray is the only river we found that offers overnight cruises as a traditional river cruise. Some cruise lines that offer overnight itineraries are listed below:

  • Captain Cook Cruises

Day cruises as well as houseboat rentals are also available on the Murray River.

Houseboat Rentals

Although, traditional overnight cruises are not featured on most of the rivers, there are houseboat rentals available for some Australian river cruises. We’ll explore two of them.

The Hawkesbury River is located in the southeast portion of Australia - near Goulburn in New South Wales. It is only 75 miles long but is one of the major rivers in that region.

We found 2 companies that offer houseboat rentals on the Hawkesbury River:

  • Hawkesbury River Houseboats
  • Holidays Afloat

The Blackwood River – located on the southwest coast of Australia - also has river houseboat rentals available. The river is 186 miles long. It  begins near Quelarup – where the Arthur and Balgarup Rivers meet.

One company offering houseboat rentals on this river:

  • Blackwood River Houseboat

Another river we’ll mention is the Tweed River . It flows for about 50 miles, and is connected to 8 other rivers and creeks in eastern Australia. The Tweed River borders Queensland and New South Wales.

Houseboat rental companies on the Tweed River include:

  • Berger Houseboats
  • Tweed River Houseboats

Day Cruises

Australian river cruises are also offered as day cruises or sightseeing cruises for the rivers already listed plus many other rivers throughout Australia. We’ll look at a few of them on this page.

The longest river in southeast Queensland is the Brisbane River . It’s 214 miles long and flows from Mount Stanley through the city of Brisbane and empties into Moreton Bay. A unique feature of this river is that it has 16 major bridges crossing it.

Cradle Mountain on the Gordon River in Tasmania, Australia

The Gordon River is located on the island of Tasmania, which is located off the southeast coast of Australia. It is one of the 5 major rivers of Australia and is a major waterway through the island itself.

Originating in Central Highlands, the Gordon River flows along uninhabited wilderness. It is divided into the Upper Gordon, Gordon Splits & Lower Gordon. The lower part of the river is a World Heritage site that features a cold-climate rainforest and unique plants and trees.

Another river found in Tasmania is the Tamar . It’s located in Launceton and flows for 43 miles.

The Avon River is located in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. It rises in the hills south of Corrigin as the Avon River and flows 224 miles until it meets the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. The Swan River is only 37 miles and empties into the Indian Ocean at Fremantle.

You’ll also find day cruises along the Yarra River in Melbourne, Victoria. This river originates in the Yarra Ranges and flows to the west through the Yarra Valley and empties into Hobsons Bay. It’s longer than some of the other rivers we’ve mentioned – measuring in at a little over 150 miles in length.

The Top River Cruise Lines

Top River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Viking Longship Idun on the Main River in front of Johannisburg Palace, Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Number of passengers: 75 to 250 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, U.S.

Viking's 60-plus ships – known as longships – traverse major rivers across Europe, including the Danube , the Rhine, the Douro and more. Other popular routes sail Egypt's Nile River as well as the Mississippi River , and newer options include a series of Great Lakes itineraries.

What to expect: Travelers may be familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises , which operates larger ocean voyages with an emphasis on opulent accommodations and diverse enrichment activities. Viking's river cruises follow a similar road map, with meals, daily walking tours and Wi-Fi access (where applicable) included in the base fare. Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the scenic shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the service as well as the food.

Number of passengers: 32 to 159 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Uniworld offers luxurious sailings in historic cities across central Europe, France , Italy , Portugal , India, Egypt and Peru.

What to expect: Its 17 ships aim to create the feel of a boutique hotel with stylish decor, antique artwork and specialty restaurants. The ships hold an average capacity of 120 cruisers, and the company boasts one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry: about one crew member for every two travelers.

Stateroom amenities vary by vessel but may include marble bathrooms, Egyptian cotton linens, French balconies, iPod docking stations, Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers and more. The line's all-inclusive rates cover meals, alcoholic beverages, select excursions, gratuities, onboard fitness classes and Wi-Fi access, on top of entertainment and enrichment classes. Uniworld prides itself on its top-notch cuisine, which is made with local ingredients sourced from the ports on your itinerary and also includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Uniworld's typical clientele tend to be in their 50s or 60s and reside in North America, the U.K. and Australia . The river cruise line has select itineraries aimed at families, LGBTQ cruisers and solo travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers offered abundant praise for Uniworld's voyages, complimenting the stylish accommodations, attentive staff and fascinating excursions. Though complaints were few and far between, a handful of past travelers felt the experience was not worth the high price point.

Courtesy of American Cruise Lines

Number of passengers: 90 to 180 Sails to:  U.S.

As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates 19 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 5 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. Shore excursions are not typically included in the rate.

Passengers on American Cruise Lines tend to lean North American and are typically mature retired travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers enjoyed their experience, particularly on the line's themed cruises.

Number of passengers: 28 to 196 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Consider a river cruise with AmaWaterways, whether you're looking to sail through the heart of Europe or seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure touring destinations like Vietnam, Egypt, South Africa or (beginning in 2024) Colombia. A family-owned business founded in 2002, AmaWaterways operates 29 river cruise boats that welcome 150 passengers on average.

The cruise line aims to provide excursion-rich experiences and offers unique themed sailings for passengers with certain interests. Wine-themed voyages are perfect for oenophiles wishing to explore some of Europe's most popular wine regions, while a concierge golf program will transport passengers from one famous golf course to the next. Or, opt for a holiday river cruise to visit magical Christmas markets around Europe. In 2024, AmaWaterways will offer three new Black history-themed itineraries.

What to expect: On board, guests can expect cabins suitable for couples or single travelers, as well as a set amount of connectible rooms designed for multigenerational families. Staterooms are spacious, with perks like bathrobes, slippers and plush bedding. Cabins can feature up to two balconies with AmaWaterways' twin balcony design, which allows for a full, step-out balcony alongside a French balcony with sliding glass doors. In-room Wi-Fi is complimentary, and guests will have access to movies and music on demand.

Outside of their cabins, passengers can enjoy amenities spanning small pools, sun decks, fitness equipment, a hair salon, massage services and more.

AmaWaterways primarily attracts North American travelers in their 50s who enjoy taking part in active shore excursions that involve walking or cycling. Passengers from the U.K. and Australia sail on this river cruise line as well. You can expect to find a mix of couples, families and solo cruisers – including a growing number of millennial travelers – on your vessel, thanks to AmaWaterways' diverse cabin offerings. Adventures by Disney charters AmaWaterways ships for select sailings each year as well.

What travelers say: Recent travelers say AmaWaterways exceeded their expectations, with many noting it was especially enjoyable for families. Still, some were disappointed, particularly with the food.

Number of passengers: 16 to 166 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Avalon Waterways sails 19 riverboats along popular thoroughfares like the Danube, the Rhone, the Seine, the Nile, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Mekong, the Ganges and more. In 2024, it will also sail the Douro River in Portugal.

What to expect: Launched in 2004, Avalon stands out for its spacious vessels – known as Suite Ships – which feature some of the largest rooms in the river cruise industry and beds that face wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views. Additional stateroom perks include complimentary breakfast in bed, L'Occitane toiletries, sitting areas, ample storage space and mattress toppers.

Across the ship, passengers can enjoy amenities like a sun deck with lounge chairs, whirlpools and a game area, in addition to numerous restaurants and bars and a 24-hour self-serve coffee station. You will also have your pick of Classic, Active or Discovery shore excursions – ranging from standard tours with a local guide to hiking outings along a hilltop castle – depending on your interests and physical abilities.

Avalon Waterways attracts English-speaking cruisers from a variety of countries, typically in their 50s and 60s. However, children ages 8 and older are welcome on board (though there are no designated kids clubs), and some voyages draw younger or older passengers.

What travelers say: Most recent reviews are positive, with travelers highlighting the friendly, knowledgeable staff and tasty food.

Number of passengers: 84 to 130 Sails to:  Europe

Travel company Tauck wears multiple hats: It operates small-ship voyages around the world, land tours across seven continents, small group journeys for an average of 24 travelers at a time, family tours and – finally – European river cruises. Six new river itineraries in Europe are on the docket for 2024. Take your pick from nine river vessels to explore popular waterways like the Douro, the Moselle, the Rhine, the Danube and the Rhone.

What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of the staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Other in-room amenities may include adjustable climate controls, satin linens, pillow-top mattresses, terry cloth robes and more. Outside of your cabin, you'll find perks such as a sun deck, a putting green, enrichment programs like cooking demonstrations, a fitness center and complimentary bikes for onshore exploring.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in the 55-and-older age group – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Number of passengers: 84 to 180 Sails to:  Europe, Asia

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers: 68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

7 things to expect on your first river cruise

A river cruise is a travel experience like no other. An intimate and boutique cruising option, it blends smaller ships and less passengers with diverse destinations.

You’ll have plenty of time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views as you sail some of the world’s most storied waterways. From a cruise along the gentle waters of the Danube to a journey through picturesque French countryside it is such a serene and scenic experience. And what could be better than simply unpacking once and letting the crew take care of the rest?

Get set to explore the rivers of the world with a leisurely river cruise. Here’s what to expect as a first timer.

1. Smaller ships

The type of ship will depend on the destination and route you choose, but river cruise ships are much smaller than ocean cruise ships, and they accommodate fewer passengers. This means a more friendly and social atmosphere on board as the smaller ship size allows you to get to know your fellow passengers more easily.

Choosing a journey onboard a Viking river ship, for example, could see you sail on an elegant Longship – a state-of-the-art Scandinavian designed vessel, specially built to navigate the historic rivers on which they sail.

2. Scenic routes

Cruising is a cost-effective way of having a big adventure as you’ll visit several places during your trip. In fact, you can expect to visit a new destination every day on your river cruise.

River cruises offer stunning views of the countryside, as they navigate through rivers and canals. You’ll often pass by picturesque towns and villages and enjoy beautiful vistas of riverside landscapes and charming towns.

3. Inclusive packages

Many river cruises include everything in the upfront cost, such as meals, excursions, transfers, beverages and Wi-Fi. This makes budgeting and planning easier.

4. Culture up close

Unlike a cruise at sea, a river cruise allows you to be immersed in your surroundings as you make your way along your route.

Plus, you can enjoy guided excursions to historical sites and local experiences at each destination. With a Viking river cruise , an excursion is included at every port with local guides who will introduce you to their unique region. You can choose to join a range of included and optional excursions, like hiring an electric bike to cycle a valley, wine tasting in a centuries old winery or just choose to explore a destination on your own.

5. Comfortable accommodations

You’ll find beautiful, modern staterooms with balconies or large windows on your river cruise, so you can enjoy the views from your own room.

6. Smooth sailing

Rivers are generally calmer than open seas, so you’re less likely to experience seasickness on a river cruise.

It’s a smooth ride throughout, even as you pass through the river locks that feature on many European waterways.

7. Onboard luxuries

While river cruise ships are smaller, they still offer amenities such as lounges, fitness centres, and sometimes even pools or hot tubs.

Onboard dining options vary, but you can expect a mix of regional and international cuisine. Dining is often open seating, and you’ll likely have a choice of venues. Plus, if you cruise with Viking, you can dine alfresco on their Aquavit Terrace, the only true outdoor restaurant on the rivers of Europe.

The dress code on a river cruise tends to be more casual dress code compared to ocean cruises. There may be no formal nights, and business casual attire is usually acceptable.

Perm cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-03-30 11:16

Perm is a Kama River cruise port and city located near the Ural Mountains. The city has a population of around 1 million, ranking it Russia's 13th most populous. In the period 1940-1957, the city was named Molotov.

Kama River is the main tributary of Volga River and one of Russia's deepest rivers. This is the main waterway connecting the Ural Mountains with 5 seas (White, Baltic, Azov, Black, Caspian). The city is divided by the river into two parts and stretches along for approx 70 km (43 ml). The city's street grid parallels the river (generally east-west), while the main streets are perpendicular to those following the river.

The city was officially established in 1781 and soon became a major metal processing center. In the 1930s, Perm grew as a major industrial city (aviation, shipbuilding, chemical factories). During WW2 (1939-1945) it was a vital center of the USSR's artillery production. Today Perm is a major industrial and scientific center, with leading industries electric power engineering, Russian aircraft industry (rocket engines), machine building, defense, oil production, oil and natural gas refining (LUKoil), cables and wires production (JSC KAMKABEL), chemical, petrochemical, forestry processing, food industry.

The city is served by the Trans-Siberian Railway connecting Central Russia with the northern Ural and the Far East. Kama River is an important deep-waterway connecting with the European waterways via the Volga. Cargo shipping from Perm to the 5 seas doesn't require reloading in intermediate ports. The city is served by Bolshoye Savino - an international airport located approx 16 km (10 mi) to the southwest. Public transportation options include trams, buses, trolleys, and city-train routes.

Help!! Bad perm, and I cruise in a week!

Cool Cruiser

Please give me advice! Like an idiot, I got a perm on Saturday. I only wanted soft waves in my shoulder length hair, but what I got was tight spiral curls!

I'm leaving for a 15 day cruise in only 8 days. What do I do! I strongly resemble a poodle. :(

I conditioned it, but it didn't relax. I'm considering buying a straightening iron. I just don't know WHAT to do. I can't continue to wear a baseball cap.

Any advice is appreciated.

I didn't know folks even GOT perms anymore!!!! My daughter had a perm years ago, and there was NOTHING that would take those curls out! It lasted over a year! Good luck!

Go back to the hairdresser. Tell them this was not what you wanted. You may need to get it chemically straightened.

10,000+ Club

If your hairdresser can't give you some kind of harmless product to help relax the curls, I would ask her how to relax it with a drier and/ or rollers. I see you aren't doing a Carib cruise which would involve a lot more outdoor active activity. That's good. Maybe practice pinning it up and wearing it a little different. I guess I wouldn't worry too much about it. By the time you leave, you'll be used to it and probably will have figured out some new styles. No way would I have any more chemicals put in your hair. I'm thinking just use large steam rollers on it before going to dinner to loosen the curl. Extra work, yes. Just practice before you go so you can streamline the process.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm hesitant to go back to the stylist, because she will probably want to chemically relax it...which I DON'T want. My hair is already slightly damaged from the perm, and from being highlighted about 5 weeks ago. I'm sure relaxing it would finish frying it. :( My hair is very fine and somewhat thin, as it is.

My intention was to get a loose perm that I could blow dry out with a large round brush, so I could get lots of volume, but have a straight hair look. I've done it before with my fine, thin hair...but that was with my old stylist in my old town.

What do you ladies think about a flat iron? If I order one today, I could have it by Monday, and have a couple of days practice with it before I leave for my cruise.

bnsheegirl

I love my flat iron and it works great. I have very curly hair, frizzy, yet very thin/fine. You can't tell when I use my flat iron. I have one that can be used on wet hair. So I just towel dry my hair, put in a little moose(sp), use the flat iron and my hair is stick straight.

henepup

Be careful with a flat iron, you can burn it!!! You currently have double processed hair, with the perm and color. I can't believe your styist actually processed your hair the second time, with the perm. Most stylist will not color and perm it. I understand that you did wait 5 weeks between processing, but thats alot of chemicals on your hair. My advice you be to get some protein on your hair, that will help relax it and help the damage that is already done. You may want to try Matrix Sleek Look shampoo and conditioner, it really helps my frizzy natural curly hair. If you do use a flat iron make sure its on the lowest setting, to not burn your hair. Good Luck!!!

Ex-stylist/colorist here:) .....

Go out and buy a jar of cholesteral...its an actual product. It looks like a custard. and a showercap.

Wash your hair with a good cheap shampoo (Helene Curtis Suave is great). Rinse with clear vinegar first, then again with water.

towel dry your hair, then lay on the cholesteral. comb it through with a wide tooth comb, pack it on top of your head, and put the shower cap on.

15 or 20 minutes under a hood dryer on medium is best, but you can just walk around for an hour or so and your body heat will do the work.

Rinse well, don't shampoo. You can shampoo the next day as usual and you should be able to see a difference.

Hope that helps!

bobandkelly

I was going to write earlier but the phone rang.

Follow Dave's advice about the cholesteral treatment. I have done this with my own hair and it works. Also look for a good leave in conditioner. Biolage by Matrix is one I like but there are others.

I know it is tempting to use a flat iron but all you will be doing is adding to the damage. Keep it conditioned and keep getting it trimmed/cut.

And remember it is only hair, even if you cut it short to get rid of the damage it will grow back.

I have naturally curly/frizzy hair and one time as a young adult a friend convinced me to get a body wave perm to tame it. It sounds like what happened to me happened to you. At that time there was no such thing as Cholesterol but I used an all natural mayonnaise. Packed it on good and thick, put a shower cap on and got into a hot steamy shower for about 10 minutes. Got out and left this on for another hour before rinsing (no shampoo) with a warm water rinse. It took out a lot of the tight curls. When I washed it 24 hours later and used a lot of conditioner it took out most of the rest. Good luck.

I am in complete sympathy with you, I too have had a bad perm a couple years ago.

I agree with the advice already given about the straight iron from past experience. Used one with my bad perm and had to get an inch chopped off the same day. After that, I went back home armed with a leave-in conditioner. The one I used was Infusium, and it helped somewhat. Also, try using some of the de-frizzing products. Just comb them through your hair while still damp. If you want a less curly look, use some large rollers while your hair is still damp and let it dry naturally. Any heat applied will further dry your hair and you WILL regret it!

Know this: It WILL eventually grow out. I learned a valuable lesson, and will NEVER get another perm again!

Wear your hair up too, and it will probably "relax" some in another week or two.

Use the Pantene shampoo that has the conditioner in it. It's a temporary fix until it grows out -- but it will relax it.

Don't get any more perms -- they smell bad every time you wet your hair too.

megr1125

Funny...i got a bad perm several years ago.....wound up getting it cut (i too was going on vacation...walked into one of those chain salons - master cuts i think...got a FAB haircut! that guy could have worked at one of those places where they charge 100 bucks just to run their fingers thru!!)

anyway.....i got some of that frizz ease stuff that i used for the week or so before the cut (i went to FLA...got REALLY fuzzy-hence the cut!) it seemed to help!

good luck! BTW, i now have natuarally curly hair! :D

(i would let the stylist know you are unhappy---they really need to do something to fix it for you, but i can understand that you dont want to let them mess you up more!)

TracersQQ

I'd let the stylist know, if nothing else, she should be able to give you some products to use. Several years ago, I got highlights that really fried my hair. It was so dry, I couldn't even rinse the shampoo out of my hair - my hair formed a big ball on the back of my head. The stylist gave me some of her deep conditioner - it might have been Biolage, I forget now. Anyway, I don't have any other advice, for you. I just wanted to drop in and say "Hi" to a neighbor (that is if your from the Mt. Pleasant in Westmoreland county), I live in New Stanton.

Hello, ex hairdresser here and I agree with Dave. Slather on the Cholesteral, and leave it on for a looooong time. No shampooing out , just rinse and repeat until curls are softened. DO NOT buy a flat iron. You could buy some cheap Velcro rollers, they come in lots of different sizes and stick to dry hair. Get the biggest size that will just make it around your hair once. Dry hair any which way with the blow dryer and then just stick them in your hair like a roller set, put on your makeup, remove rollers and toussle with your fingers, and voils, nice big soft loose waves Oh, and note to self, no more perms!

Thanks everyone, for the replies. Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm going to buy some Cholesterol this weekend, and see what happens. I'll forget the idea of the straightening iron, as I don't want to damage my hair.

I went 'hat-less' yesterday (for the first time), and funnily enough, the perm started to grow on me a little, lol. Actually, for a perm, it IS a nice perm...the curls are all perfect. I could probably pass for a natural curly haired person. I'm just having a hard time adjusting to it being SO curly, when my original goal was to have straight hair with a lot of body. :)

Hi, TracersQQ. I am from the Mt Pleasant in Westmoreland County...not many people know there are 3 Mt Pleasants in PA, lol. Have a happy Turkey Day!

20,000+ Club

Yikes! Do you want hair left! I agree, go back to the hairdresser and have them do what they can.

Absolutely do not put another chemical process on hair that has just been chemically processed. Deep conditioner, a haircut...yes, a straightener will absolutely fry your hair.

I also did not think people got perms any more, I think I gave up on them in the 90's.

Good luck to the OP, you may just be stuck with your curls for a while, hopefully you can get them to relax a bit with deep conditioning :o

OK, I had only read up to where I quoted and it looks like you have been given some good advice.

The problem was that you got chemically treated hair permed, damage on top of damage. All the conditioner in the world will not cure damaged hair and although heavy conditioning will help pull some of the curl out, it will also weigh your hair down and it will look flatter and thinner. What will do you the very best good right now is a great haircut, one that will work with the perm. You might have to go shorter than you want, but you have to decide if you want damaged hair or nice looking hair.

I was a hair stylist for 15 years, retired from the business a few years ago. I only cut hair so fortunately didn't do any chemical damage. But time after time, I would go in and cut off some of the damaged portion, usually from bleach or perms and it is unbelievable how much prettier the hair style would look, even a quarter to a half an inch shorter.

Do not, under any circumstances, use a flat iron on damaged hair. My daugher uses one, our hair stylist refuses to color treat her hair because of it (thank you, she won't believe me!). I have her hair cut on a regular basis, to get rid of the fried ends.

princessdivaapril

I have been told several time that Pert oor Prell(cant remember which one) loosens perms, big time. Just use it and wash hair alot of times before your trip-but use lots of conditioner and a good leave in

Dave we have used that and bought it a beauty supply store, after it was recommended to us by a hairdresser, after my poor daughter's hair was fried in a perm. It helped but she still had to keep cutting her hair for about two years until finially all the perm was all gone. She had long hair and wanted long spiral curls (this was at least 7 years ago)- once she got that all cut off, she grew her hair long again and has learned how to do those looser curls with a hair dryer and round brush and her hair always looks good.

She has a natural wave to her hair which she hated when she was younger, she always wanted either straight hair or super curly hair-with maturity she learned to appreciate what God gave her, to work with it, instead of trying to change it. she has beautiful hair now.

Just want to clarify one thing to be sure. The conditioner referred to above is brand named Cholestrol, isn't it? Cholesterol is a blood lipid.

I'm not actually sure of how the conditioner is really spelled, but I have used it in the past in South America and The Philippines where it is popular.

I have been in the exact situation of the OP. Using lots of conditioner and ulta-big rollers worked best, but it is a hard problem to resolve and takes a long time. Plus I suspect the OP's hair may be damaged or even "fried" at least in some places, though we can hope for the best.

I hope she is able to find a solution to her extra-curly hair. If push comes to shove, the OP can always wear a hat outdoors on the top decks, by the pool and on shore excursions. I had to resort to that trick until my hair finally grew enough and straightened out.

I'm not sure of the extent of the damage of the OPs hair, however that is the best, least expensive, and non-damaging treatment I can think of to help with a quick fix other than cutting everything off.

As for perms.....They can be very helpful, or horrible.

Let me tell you, this whole spiral perm thing withthe fancy rods and twisting twirling spirals is nothing more than a fad and a bad one at that. The spiral on long hair can NEVER mimick natural curly hair..

However I have given spirals on longer hair using different rod sizes starting with a smaller toward the scalp and working up two sizes to the end, holding the rods together with shishkabob skewers while it processed. While these perms came out natural looking there was a lot of maintanance involved, including air drying and scrunching with gel based products to hold the look. Personally if I was a female I'd just use rollers, or a curling iron in a pinch....Its a nicer natural look IMHO.

As for me they called me "Bleach" in Cosmo school as I was always putting highlights in my hair and it was basically platinum:eek: . I could also roll a perm so tight it included a free face lift! The little old ladies loved it!!

I went from "bleach" to bald.........too much drying of the scalp and a little bit of genetics......

For everyone, all I can say is before you have ANY kind of chemical treatment...ASK/LOOK at previous work done by the salon and trhe stylist. The person who normally cuts or styles your hair MAY NOT be the best person. See someone who specializes in what you want and shop around. Ask about what products they use, background and prices.

We owned a salon for 16 years and fortunately rarely had the type of stylists who would not "share" their clients. We believed as a business overall it was best to have the client go to the person who could best do the work. We had people who were better at perming, some did better color, we had one guy who did awesome clipper/flat top work, some that were great at trimming mens beards, some were better with kids, etc...

It's really what all salons should do, it's very rare that one stylist excels at everything. And... the client should never feel uncomfortable going to another person in a salon, just ask, they really are quite used to it.

You description of the "spiral" perms using regular rods sure did bring back old memories.

The last one I got like that (YEARS ago) was 5 hours (and 300 rods) but it was beautiful. I won't say what it cost!

To the OP: I think you are going through "perm shock". Give it some time, let it relax and have a great time on your cruise!!!

You know Dave, my daughter was 16 at the time and had been usuing prmanent color on her hair. her hair is naturally light auburn but sh eliked tomake it redder. she had her hair done at one of the mall salons and I do not bleive the silly girl bothered to tell the gal she had color on her hiar. She seemed to feel as it had been two weks since she had colored her hair it was "safe" to perm.

After many, many, months ( I am guessing close to a year or a little over a year) of her hair looking terrible and she having an inch here and there trimmed off, (she wanted to keep that long hair-even though it looked like dry frizzy straw) I convinced her to let me take her to our friend who is a hair dresser. He cut her hair medium short, in a page-boy "bob" very cute and it was simple for her to blow out semi-straight, leaving just enough of the wave in for her hair to turn under. Her hair looked nice again and she was able to grow it out after that,as most of the perm was then gone, her hair being no more then 6 inches long!

Now her hair is I guess 6 ot 8 inches past her shoulders and she uses a disfusser(spelled?) hooked to her dryer and the round brush-so she still has curls, just loose curls and her hair looks very nice, down or up, a she sometimes wears it with a few tendrils trailing loose.
