Most international visitors going to Thailand arrive in Bangkok first. Although you'll find more frequent flights, trains, and buses from Bangkok to Phuket during high season (November to March), there are always many transportation options for the rest of the year, too.

Air travel is the easiest and fastest way to get to Phuket from Bangkok. While flying to Phuket is going to be the most expensive way to get there, it does save you a lot of precious time. And flights are still relatively affordable as tickets average around ฿2155 ($60). You can purchase online flight tickets with departures from both Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport in Bangkok. The flight duration is approximately 90 minutes.

Your Arrival in Phuket Airport

Flights touch down in Phuket international airport located in the Northern part of the island. To reach your hotel in Phuket, taxis are convenient and are found outside the arrivals terminal. Note that metered taxis in Phuket are more expensive than Bangkok. And it’s also common that drivers give a fixed price instead of using the meter which make the cost even more expensive.

If you’re a group sharing the cost, the best option would be to book a private transfer as you would know what you’re paying in advance. Also, your driver will be waiting for you and the moment you walk out of arrivals you’ll be on your way avoiding to wait in line for a taxi. Should you be traveling solo, or want a cheaper alternative, then shared transfers are also option. The ride will be slower as the driver will be dropping off passengers at their hotel. For popular areas such as Phuket town, Patong and Kata, you can book your shared transfer online. For any other places, there may be options at the airport depending on number of people needing to go in that direction.

Bangkok to Phuket by Bus

The most convenient way to travel from Bangkok to Phuket on a budget is by bus. There’s frequent daily departures from Mochit Station and Bangkok Southern terminal. Should you be in the Khao San area, there’s also a night bus departing every day at 7:00 pm from in front of Khao San Nara Travel.

Travel duration from Bangkok to Phuket by bus is around 12 hours. However certain companies make stops to drop off and pick up other passengers. This often results in the trip taking over 15 hours.

The best way to travel from Bangkok to Phuket by bus is at night. You can sleep throughout most of the journey and also save the cost of 1 night accommodation. Plus, you’ll be in Phuket in the morning gaining a full day to explore.

You can view all departure and terminals and book your bus tickets online. Alternatively you can just show up at Mochit bus terminal or Southern bus terminal on your day of travel and see if any tickets are available. Usually if the bus tickets are sold out, there will be minivans. But know that minivans are by no means as comfortable as a bus.

Your Arrival in Phuket Bus Terminal

The bus from Bangkok to Phuket will terminate the journey at Phuket terminal 1, Phuket terminal 2 or certain buses stop in Thalang. Where the bus ends will depend on which bus ticket you bought. Regardless of where the bus terminates, you can take a taxi or tuk-tuk and if you arrive during the day there may also be shared minivans going to popular areas. This would be the cheapest option.

Bangkok to Phuket by Train+Bus

The third way to reach Phuket from Bangkok is by train followed by a bus. By train it’s only possible to get as far as Surat Thani and from there take a 4 to 6 hour bus to Phuket. The slow moving train and waiting time between train to bus make this the slowest option. However, if you want a unique experience, it doesn’t get much better than this.

There are frequent trains departing each day from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station. Travel duration from Bangkok to Surat Thani is approximately 10 hours and the first train departure is at 7:30 am with a scheduled arrival time at 4:20 pm. This isn’t the best time to arrive in Surat Thani as most buses and minivans to Phuket will have already left. And even if you do find a minivan or bus, you would arrive in Phuket after 9:00/10:00pm.

The best would be to take a night train and choose the sleeper option. You’ll get a full length bed with clean linen in an air conditioned carriage. On board there is also a restaurant. Food is good enough but not great. It’s a fun adventure and should you choose the night train, make sure to pack something warm as at night the air condition gets too cold.

Surat Thani to Phuket Bus/Minivan

Trains arrive into Surat Thani Railway Station. There are buses operating from the train station to Phuket. You can book your bus tickets online or just show up when you arrive as most times you’ll find available tickets. The bus station is just a 1 minute walk outside the train station. Walk out any of the train station exits and turn left. Buses are parked in a small parking area. The bus journey from Surat Thani to Phuket is around 6 hours. Buses have air condition, comfortable seats and luggage storage compartment.

Arriving in Phuket Bus Terminal

Most buses from Surat Thani to Phuket terminate the journey at Phuket bus terminal 2. From here you will need to find transport to reach your transport. If you arrive during the day there may be shared transport available going to popular areas such as Patong beach, Kata beach, Karon beach and this would be the most affordable way to reach your hotel. We arrived at the terminal around 7:00pm. The only way to reach our hotel in Patong was with a private Songtaew which cost ฿500 for the 30 minute ride.

The transfer from Domestic and International was a bit confusing but I am easily confused. I did not eat any food, but the food on the other leg was decent. It was nice they turned the lights off on the night flight. The plane was in good shape, but was a little cramped in economy and I am small. They gave me a customs form to fill out and nobody looked at it as I went through customs. Not a bad flight.

My case was missing a wheel on arrival Heathrow and the staff were unhelpful when i tried to get some compensation stating it was not sufficient damage, i only wish that they at some point have to deal with the same situation it put me in, maybe they would change their attitude but overall it was a good flight

Lunch Food was tasteful and had variety. Seat was comfortable. However, when I was reserving my seats during booking, the seat configuration showed was 3-3-3, but when I boarded it was a 2-4-2 configuration? Also during booking, I had also bought travel insurance together with my TG booking. However there was no confirmation of my purchase from Allianz and TG. After several emails with TG contact, sales, reservation and Allianz was i able to confirm my insurance purchase. When the policy was issued, the birth dates of me and my wife were wrongly stated and I had to go through another round of emails with Allianz to get it corrected. Otherwise any claims would be void! It was indeed not a very good booking experience!

Thai Air Asia no longer has customer support that you can call and talk to. All support is done by chat bot or self help websites. This can be a major issue if you have a problem and it bit us so we can’t recommend nor will we book with them again unless as a last resort.

There are no services, not even water, and they only take local currency and I didn't yet have Thai baht ( flying from Indonesia and no rupiah left). I won't choose to fly with this line again.

CNX is a filthy, poorly kept airport. I have heard that Thailand plans to build another airport in San Kampaeng area, so perhaps they are just letting this one go. But it makes every airline look badly to offer their service in such a poorly organized "dump". Sorry to say this, but that's what it's like. At least the AirAsia flight which I took was on time! I appreciate that.

Air Asia will be my choice of airline when I fly to Asia every 6 to 8 weeks. Thank you for your good service.

I really like air Asia. The flights are running very professionally and both of my flights this last time got in early. Planes were clean. The staff was very professional and helpful. I understand they were supposed to be a budget airline but they don’t act like they’re a budget airline.

Delay of 3 hrs and they offered only Macdonalds pineapple pays. Not any good

The return flight was delayed for more than 4 hours. Luckily we were in the airport way in advance and managed to reach out to the Nok Air sales office to squeeze us into the earlier flight.

Lead flight attendant was rude and not helpful. Very unprofessional.

Purchased additional baggage and the flight was canceled due to covid. When they rebooked us they didn’t carry over the extra baggage. They wanted to charge 3x the original ticket price for “added” weight… 6000 bhat for an additional 15kilo (which would of been easily covered by what we originally booked) took nearly 2 hours to work out and they only let us check in minutes before our flight boarded. Very unhappy.

No frills means no frills... I just got on the plane and flew. That's all. Nothing more and nothing less. Or I did buy some water, they took cash only! LOL

First the flight delayed 1 hour ND then when we suppose to landing the pilot decided not to land at the chiang Mai Airport but the chiang rai airport

I get tired of Viet Jet's regular delays. I tell myself every time that I need tp switch to Air Asia, which I have, but AA doesn't always have flights when I need them. Oh well...

Worst experience, hands down. With a movable departure time it's impossible to know at what time to go to the airport. On the day of my return flight I received a kayak email informing me that my flight was bent rescheduled for an hour earlier. I literally had to run to the airport to learn it wasn't true. Never again

There were four delays over a period of 3 1/2 hours with very little advance warning. There was no explanation offered as to the reason for the delays. I hope I never have to fly a Thai Viet Jet Air again.

Delayed boarding, deboarding by bus - time to choose another airline.

Left 1/2 hour late and had to deboard on a bus. I will choose another airline from now on.

Both flight schedules were changed by the airline after booking the flights. 215pm departure brought forward to 1045pm and 110pm (return) departure moved to 530pm. Caused great inconvenience and not even a discount voucher from the airline! Disappointing.

About Travel to Phuket

• Choosing a Train: 7 out of the 9 trains to Surat Thani have sleeper berths. The 07:30 and 22:50 departures do not have sleeper berths.
• Sleeper berths: The are three kinds of sleeper berth on Thai Trains – 1st Class (private cabin), 2nd Class A/C (shared carriage with bunk beds), 2nd Class Fan (same as 2nd Class A/C minus the air-conditioning, although on the lower bunk you can open the window).
• Train Station: Trains to Surat Thani depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station.

When you arrive in Surat Thani you need to go to the car park in front of the station. The car park is located to the left hand side of the ticket hall as you leave the train. There are several cafes (such as Wut Travel) on this car park. Wait there and a Phantip Travel representative will be there to guide you to the bus.

The bus trip from Surat Thani Railway Station to Phuket takes 4 hours 30 minutes. For most of the journey you travel along a well maintained two lane highway with pleasant views on route, with a 30 minute rest stop halfway through the journey at a roadside restaurant. The point of arrival in Phuket is Phuket Bus Terminal 1, which is in the centre of Phuket Town. Phuket Town is an interesting place with lots of historical buildings and some very good cheap hotels, such as the excellent Rome Place . There are also inexpensive shared taxi and minivans from Phuket Bus Terminal 1 to local destinations, such as Patong Beach, running frequently throughout the day.

Is affordable luxury in Southeast Asia a myth? We went to find out.

There’s a popular refrain Western travelers repeat about Southeast Asia: “The flight’s expensive , but once you get there everything’s cheap.” You can find “White Lotus” luxuries for Holiday Inn prices, they say.

When I moved to Bangkok in 2014 , I learned quickly that wasn’t the whole story, and I had a dwindling savings account to prove it. Yes, you could get street food for $1 and massages for less than $10. And you could also blow money eating , drinking and traveling like anywhere else.

But Southeast Asia’s reputation of luxury for less is not necessarily a myth , particularly when comparing it to other popular destinations. In January, average nightly hotel rates were $126 in Bangkok, according to STR , a hospitality data and analytics company, lower than $151 in London, $391 in Hawaii and $145 in Tokyo.

Unlike in those other locales, “in most parts of Thailand, $100 a night is going to get you something really, really nice,” said Robert Sukrachand , a furniture designer who splits his time between Chiang Mai, Thailand, and New York.

Myriad factors contribute to lower prices in the region, such as how far the dollar goes, labor costs and the lower cost of living in most of Southeast Asia compared with the United States. And like many other tourist-heavy destinations, what’s a deal for Western tourists could be out of reach for many locals.

To find deals, Sukrachand says you’ll have to do some research on local favorites and price standards. Having a baseline of what things cost is helpful to get the most value out of your trip. Finding lower prices usually means getting away from the well-trodden tourist paths of Phnom Penh or Penang, and skipping the tuk-tuks closest to the popular temples.

If you want to save on hotels, look for a boutique property

On a recent trip to Las Vegas , my off-the-Strip hotel room with a Murphy bed cost $185 per night. A month before that, I paid $134 for a motel off the freeway in Iowa . For $10 less than my Iowa rate, I got a suite with a living room and two balconies overlooking a canal at the Siamotif Boutique Hotel in Bangkok.

I followed the advice of Katie Carew , a luxury travel adviser with the Travel Edge Network, who told me local brands offered better deal than international ones. I ended up at Siamotif, a traditional Thai wooden house with seven guest rooms, each with its own name and unique design. Technically, it was a three-star property but had a “superb” rating on Booking.com . Every morning, my complimentary breakfast was made from scratch; a Thai omelet with red curry and chicken one day, nam prik ong with rice and vegetables the next.

When it comes to hotels in Bangkok, it’s a buyers market. The country has an oversupply of traveler accommodations, and the hotel industry is continuing to expand, according to an analysis from Krungsri Thai bank. I could have found less-expensive hotels, even ones in the center of the city or in sleek high-rise buildings with sweeping views. More expensive options can be found closer to tourist hot spots — just like prices rise the closer you get to the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the beach in Waikiki — or with international brands.

“Whether you are in New York City or Switzerland or Vietnam, the highest level hotel is pretty much the same price across the world,” Carew said.

In Vietnam, I wanted to splurge in between overnight train rides from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. I could go all out at Vedanā Lagoon Resort & Spa near Danang, where overwater villas ran just over $200 per night. Instead of faking a honeymoon, I went to their sister property, the Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort & Spa in Hue. At check-in, staff gave me a little tapioca and banana dessert, a cup of ginger tea and a frozen hand towel. My “Deluxe Double” room — a short walk away from the pool and swim-up bar — was $96 and came with a buffet breakfast, morning tai chi and yoga, and a 30-minute spa voucher.

I did get burned by a few local hotels’ misleading photos and descriptions. In Phuket, my $76-per-night “boutique hotel” turned out to be a dank cement cube with a hard bed — and not in a chic minimalist way. And in Hanoi, my $30 hotel “Superior room” didn’t have a window and was so small I could barely open the door.

Khoa Nguyen, who co-owns the Vietnam travel company In Country Tours with his wife, Michelle, says luxury hotels have been faring better since the pandemic than others. “Many of the two, three, four-star hotels are not up to standard yet,” Nguyen said. “The five-stars are more reliable.”

Seek out self care where locals go

Wellness is a cornerstone of tourism in Southeast Asia, but it’s not just for tourists. “Massage is not really a luxury in Thailand,” Sukrachand said. “It’s something that people all over the country — even in rural areas — have built into their culture.”

I had afternoon massages in Bangkok and Phuket to help with jet lag and recover from full days of walking. Instead of going to luxury hotels where rates were close to those I’d find at home in D.C., I went with smaller places that catered to both locals and tourists. I paid $5 for a 30-minute foot massage, $8 for an hour-long massage and $55 full-body oil massage at a more upscale spa in a private room.

The further from tourist areas, the better the rates. At a market between a college and a hospital, I got an $18 manicure and pedicure that was so perfect, I had to leave a review .

In Vietnam, I needed a different kind of spa after nearly two weeks of dining out and sweating on the backs of motorbikes in humid cities. To address my acne flare-up, I searched Google Maps for “medical spa” in Hanoi and found a same-day appointment to see a dermatologist. For $21, I had a consultation with the doctor, was given an hour-long treatment from a nurse practitioner who steamed and massaged my face, performed some pore extractions, applied a thick goopy peel-off mask and finished with LED light therapy .

World-class dining for a midrange bill

I landed in Vietnam ready to eat, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnamese American writer Dan Dao, who’s based there, noted the only place on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list in Vietnam is based in the city.

That restaurant is Anan , where the 1o-course tasting menu costs $100 — a fraction of the $425, 10-course tasting menu at another 50 Best restaurant, SingleThread Farm in California. Still, I opted to order from the a la carte menu. My elaborate gin cocktail, glass bottle of sparkling water, three dishes, tax and service charge totaled $47, by far my most expensive meal of the trip. I offset that by having a $2 banh mi lunch the next day.

While high-end restaurants cater to wealthy locals, international travelers and expats, Vietnam’s street food and mom-and-pop shops are for everyone, even those who can afford nicer restaurants, Dao says. You’ll find the city’s wealthy eating at inexpensive places “because the quality is simply the best for those kinds of dishes,” he said.

Dao says like in the United States, there’s a perception in Vietnam that certain Asian food — like street food — should be cheap, which can be limiting to business owners. But in Vietnam, it can be easier to keep prices down when businesses can operate from home or without a brick-and-mortar shop and “the cost of goods is just lower,” Dao said.

After dinner at Anan, I considered going to award-winning bars like Nhau Nhau or the Alley , where average cocktail prices are $5 to $6; the equivalent in D.C. would be $14. In Bangkok, prices are a little steeper at the city’s top bars and restaurants. “The food and cocktail scene in Bangkok now is as good if not better than New York City,” Sukrachand said, both in terms of design and quality, and for cuisine beyond Thai food.

You can bounce around the city’s best cocktail spots like Tep Bar and Tropic City for $12 a drink. Elaborate tasting menus at the one-Michelin star Nahm cost between $75 and $93; my mom and I saved on the bill a few years ago by going for lunch a la carte. At a beachside restaurant in Phuket, I had an amazing plate of fried clams in sweet chile sauce, a massive yellow crab curry, rice and beer for $22. At the Thai place across the street from my apartment in D.C., curries start at $16.

Private tours aren’t just for wealthy tourists

Sukrachand told me that in Thailand, “some of the best food is some of the least expensive food, but ... without somebody showing you around, you’re not necessarily going to find it.” It was a good reminder to book some food tours on my trip. For $25, I joined a group tour in Hanoi and ate delicious food at seven places that I would have never found on my own. For $65, I booked a half-day private excursion in Hue with Nguyen’s In Country Tours. The extra $40 made the experience feel above my pay grade.

When the wealthy travel , they don’t do it with the masses. They go private — private villas, private guides, private planes. The average traveler can get a taste of that in Southeast Asia.

For $17, my Bangkok hotel offered to arrange a private airport pickup , the kind where the driver waits in the terminal with your name on a sign and has cold water for you in the car. All of these cost more than the lowest-priced options, but paying a little more went so much further.

Phuket begs for water fix

Tourism authorities in Phuket are begging the government to deal with the water shortage problem which is contributing to higher costs for hotel operators amid growing numbers of visitors.

Thanet Tantipiriyakit, president of the Phuket Tourist Association, urged the government on Wednesday to find a sustainable solution as the island province suffers from water shortages every year. He said the water levels of the three main reservoirs -- Bang Wad, Klong Kata and Bang Neow Dum -- are 20% below full capacity.

Despite the growing revenue which the province's tourism generates each year, Mr Thanet said the government is still failing to fix the water problem. This harms the tourism sector because hotel operators must buy water. They have to shoulder the cost because they cannot charge customers more due to pricing standards.

"Phuket is the country's prime tourist destination. We are supposed to have a better water supply system," Mr Thanet said.

Sukrid Klinson, manager of the Phuket branch of the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), said water volumes at Bang Wad Reservoir remained at 1.17 billion cubic metres (m³), accounting for 16.8% of the overall capacity of 10.2 billion m³.

The water supply in the Klong Kata reservoir is sufficient for about 95 days of use while the Bang Neow Dum reservoir can supply water for 100 days at its current level.

The province is in talks with private water suppliers as it attempts to secure 1.4 million m³. Negotiations are afoot to procure 960,000 m³.

Business operations in high-demand areas, such as Ao Yon and some parts of Pa Tong, are struggling amid high demand for water, Mr Sukrid said.

Sophon Thongsai, head of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, said the water level at the Bang Wad Reservoir is now "critically low". Unless there is significant rainfall soon, the PWA will reduce the rate at which water is discharged from Bang Wad Reservoir and instead use water from private sources as a stop-gap measure, he said.

The Southern Meteorological Center (West Coast) has forecast the island may see rainfall sooner than expected.

Downpours are due from the second week of May with more precipitation than in previous years, it said.

Free water supplies for areas suffering from drought and communities in need are being provided by the PWA on request through local administrative organisations, Mr Sophon said.
