13 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in British Columbia, 2023/24

Written by Lana Law and Michael Law Updated Dec 7, 2023

The ski resorts in British Columbia draw visitors from around the world to their slopes for many reasons: First and foremost is the consistent snow and lots of it. Second, a wide variety of resort styles are available to suit any budget and level of skier ability. Finally, good flight connections, generally through Vancouver, ensure that getting there and back home is easy and quick.

Most of the resorts are located in the southern part of the province, and a majority are in the Interior region. A popular option is to combine multiple ski resorts into one trip. This can be easily accomplished in the Okanagan Valley and in the Golden/Revelstoke areas.

For many, the time off the slopes is as important as the skiing itself. In this area, British Columbia's ski resorts excel. What you'll find at the base or surrounding areas ranges from international-level amenities at places like Whistler/Blackcomb to old-school ski towns in spots like Rossland near Red Mountain.

Most ski resorts in British Columbia offer more than just downhill skiing. Many feature cross-country trails, snowshoeing, dogsledding, snowmobiling, skating, and tubing.

Check out the top destinations with our list of the best ski resorts in British Columbia.

1. Whistler Blackcomb

2. big white ski resort, 3. sun peaks resort, 4. revelstoke mountain resort, 5. silverstar mountain resort, 6. apex mountain resort, 7. red mountain resort, 8. kicking horse mountain resort, 9. fernie alpine resort, 10. panorama mountain resort, 11. kimberley alpine resort, 12. whitewater ski resort, 13. mount washington alpine resort, map of ski resorts in british columbia.

Whistler Blackcomb

  • Largest ski resort in Canada
  • A 2-hour drive from Vancouver
  • One of the best ski resorts in the world

Often ranked as one of the best ski resorts in the world , Whistler Blackcomb has it all. Two mountains (Whistler and Blackcomb) with 240 runs are set in some of British Columbia's most incredible scenery. Whistler Blackcomb is easily accessible via a two-hour scenic drive via the Sea to Sky Highway from downtown Vancouver .

Owing to its location, Whistler can usually be counted on for consistent snowfall, resulting in a deep base. On average, Whistler receives an astounding 35.5 feet of snow each season , ensuring your favorite run is white beneath your skis.

Even if you aren't a skier, a ride to the top of either mountain and a trip across the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola is an experience not to be missed.

After your day of skiing or perhaps during a day off to rest the legs, swing by the BUBLY tube park. Seven different lanes are available depending on your age, speed tolerance, and adventure level. A special Mini-kid lane is set aside for the youngest participants. The tube park requires a separate ticket to ride, and it's cheaper to book yours in advance online.

New Infrastructure

The two huge infrastructure improvements in the Creekside Base Area and mid-mountain region have delivered as promised. The new 10-passenger gondola has gone a long way towards eliminating the long queues by moving 35% more people up the hill. Farther up the hill, the old quad chair has been replaced with a new six-passenger lift, and although the former bottleneck is still busy, it's better than it was previously.

Over at Whistler Village , the old Fitzsimmons quad has been replaced just in time for the 2023/24 season by a high-speed eight-passenger lift. It's hoped that this will alleviate the morning uphill loading crush.

Whistler Village

Whistler Village

The town of Whistler is a wonderful alpine village with an extensive offering of fine and casual dining, shopping, and fun things to do . Accommodation options range from ski-in/ski-out luxury hotels, condos, and traditional hotels to private homes for rent. Most people park their cars and walk everywhere.

On Sundays, be sure to catch the Fire & Ice ski show, where performers jump, twist, and turn through flaming rings.

Whistler/Blackcomb is owned by Vail Resorts and is part of the Epic Pass program.

Big White Ski Resort

  • One hour from Kelowna
  • Extensive intermediate terrain
  • Known for snow-covered trees called snow ghosts

Copious quantities of snow (26 feet on average each season) and the unique snow ghosts are just some of what Big White is known for. The resort features a vertical drop of 2,550 feet and has 119 named runs serviced by 16 lifts including a gondola.

Over half the terrain is rated intermediate and features wide-open, long cruisers to allow you to work on your technique. TELUS Park is the boarder and ski cross area, complete with rails, bumps, boxes, and jumps.

If you've still got the leg power, or are just hitting the hill after a late-day drive, 38 acres of night skiing on fully lit runs await you. Three lifts, the Plaza Chair, Bullet Chair, and TELUS Park Chair service the illuminated areas.

New developments at the mountain completed recently include some fairly significant projects. The largest and most noticeable to skiers is the completion of the big, beautiful central reservations office. The new building will allow for seamless check-in and check-out of guests staying on the hill.

Uphill capacity on Lara's Gondola has increased by 50 percent with the addition of eight new cabins. Beginner skiers and families with small children have been beneficiaries of the installation of a new Magic Carpet lift.

Early risers who love shredding the corduroy will be pleased to learn that the resort has added a brand new $500,000 groomer to the fleet. If you need rentals, you'll be assured of a perfect fit with the addition of brand-new laser foot scanners in the rental shop. No more manual measurements and size guesses, now your feet will be measured exactly, and a matching boot selected.

Off the mountain, you'll find 25 kilometers of cross-country (Nordic) trails , 14 kilometers of which are groomed daily. Be sure to check out the 60-foot-high, man-made ice tower (climbing allowed), along with the tubing park. A fast and furious dogsled ride through the trees or a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride are other options as well.

For those with children too young or unwilling to ski, daycare is also available at Tot Town. Big White ski resort is just an hour from downtown Kelowna and easily reached via good roads.

Sun Peaks Resort

  • The second-largest ski resort in Canada
  • A ski-through alpine village at the base
  • A 45-minute drive from Kelowna

Many people are surprised to find that Sun Peaks Resort is Canada's second-largest ski area , with over 4,200 skiable acres. Spread out over three mountains, Mount Todd, Mount Sundance, and Mount Morrisey, you'll find 132 named runs, many of which are best suited for beginner and intermediate skiers.

Skiers are loving the new Crystal Chair, complete with a conveyor system; it's boosted the number of riders getting to the top by 20%. Those improvements coupled with 13 lifts consisting of four high-speed quad chairs, two quad chairs, one triple chair, and six surface lifts service a vertical drop of 2,894 feet .

On average, Sun Peaks gets about 18 feet of snow each year so there's always plenty to go around, and for those in the know, secret stashes in the glades that last long after a storm dump.

Sun Peaks has a delightful "ski-through" alpine village located right at the base of the runs, with restaurants and shops. It's a perfect place to relax and recount the adventures of your day.

Hotels and other accommodations are available in the village and the nearby areas. A complimentary resort shuttle runs on a regular schedule (every 10 minutes during the day, and every 20 minutes in the evening) and services the outlying village areas.

For those on a budget who don't mind driving a bit, lower-cost options can be found in the town of Kamloops, 45 minutes away.

Sun Peaks is part of the IKON Pass and Mountain Collective programs.

Revelstoke

  • Has the highest vertical drop in North America (5,620 feet)

Revelstoke Mountain Resort is located in a snowy valley in eastern British Colombia, where the snowfall is an astounding 30 feet per year. The ski hill is located on Mount Mackenzie and has a vertical drop of 5,620 feet, the highest vertical drop in North America .

Uphill capacity consists of the eight-passenger Revelation Gondola, three detachable quad chairlifts, and two Magic Carpets. Skiing here skews towards intermediate and advanced , which makes up 88 percent of the terrain. Four big bowls feature wide-open skiing above the tree line and can be spectacular following a big dump of snow.

The Steller Chair installed last season has become a welcome addition and is especially favored by beginner and intermediate skiers. In addition to the new chair, three other lifts have additional chairs and gondolas added to the existing infrastructure, boosting capacity by just over 20 percent. The ski school also has a new home and the surface lifts have been realigned.

Improvements completed last season include changes in the Steller and Ripper areas of the mountain. The changes in the Steller area will primarily benefit beginner skiers, as the Big Bend run has been significantly widened. Skiers enjoying the Ripper area will notice that the Sally Alley run is now straighter and the Chopper run more enjoyable with the grade adjusted.

If you are looking for heli-skiing , Selkirk Tangiers operates a base a short distance from town. In mere minutes, you'll be on top of a mountain with thousands of feet of untracked snow in front of you. Plans are in place to move the heli-base closer to the mountain base area.

Premium accommodation is available at the base of the hill in the ever-expanding base area. If you'd like a bit of history, the town of Revelstoke is a good place to stay . This is an authentic Canadian mountain town with a history of mining and forestry. It's a pleasant spot to wander around after a day of skiing, and you'll find decent local restaurants and eclectic shops.

Upscale accommodation is located in the base area. For lower priced options look in town where you'll find hotels, Airbnbs, luxury bed and breakfasts, and private rentals.

Revelstoke is part of the IKON Pass and Mountain Collective programs.

SilverStar Mountain Resort

  • A family-oriented ski resort
  • A cute village right at the base of the mountain
  • An abundance of intermediate runs
  • Located an hour from Kelowna and 25 minutes from Vernon

In operation for over 60 years, SilverStar is one of BC's best family ski resorts . It offers nearly 2,500 feet of vertical drop and 132 runs, including one that is five miles long.

An abundance of mid-level terrain on the front side of the mountain is perfect for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. The back is steep and deep. SilverStar gets plenty of snow each year, so much, in fact, at 23 feet, that they specifically boast of having no snowmaking capability. Cranking lots of vertical is easy at Silverstar

Silverstar has six lifts including one combination chair and gondola known as the Des Schumann Summit Express. For 2023/24 the mountain has added 21 new gondola cabins to this lift to increase uphill capacity.

One of the highlights of SilverStar is the picture-perfect alpine village located right on the ski hill . Here, you'll find good accommodation options, 18 restaurants, and several unique shops. Cars are of limited use up here, so the resort is a perfect spot to hang up the keys for the week and walk everywhere.

Want to try something completely new? Rent a fat bike and take a rip on over 15 kilometers of snowy and fun trails through the trees. Another option for off-the-ski-hill fun is slip-sliding fun at Tube Town, where you and the family can slide down specially designed chutes on truck tire-sized tubes.

SilverStar is located about 25 minutes from Vernon and a little over an hour from Kelowna.

Runs at Apex

  • Known for powder snow
  • Less crowded than many resorts in the interior
  • A 40-minute drive from Penticton

Located close to Penticton, Apex is known for its dry, fluffy powder . Sunny skies are a regular occurrence here as are short lift lines. The average wait time is a paltry two minutes.

Apex is the only resort in the Okanagan Valley that faces northeast. The upside of this alignment is that the beautiful light powder snow is not sun affected and stays pristine longer. On average, the resort receives just shy of 20 feet of this magical fluff.

For those less accustomed to powder snow, Apex has an extensive program of grooming, and miles of corduroy is available for those who love groomed runs. Over 2,000 feet of vertical are spread across 119 runs (79 marked, 40 plus unmarked). Snowboarders and skiers will also find four terrain parks spread across the mountain.

Red Mountain

  • Some of the best tree skiing in Canada
  • Located near Rossland

For those purists looking for old-school skiing in a relaxed atmosphere, look no further than Red Mountain Resort. This hidden gem of a ski hill is all about skiing and snowboarding, and with an average annual snowfall of 25 feet, the word is starting to get out.

The skiable terrain is spread out over 3,850 acres and features 110 marked runs. For those with the skills, the glade (tree) skiing is some of the best in North America.

You can rack up impressive vertical here. The lift lines are always short, and even if you do have to wait, the locals are a friendly bunch. Red Mountain Resort now has seven lifts, and the recently installed Topping Creek chairlift has opened up 300 new acres of fun.

To get a good handle on where to ski, join the free mountain tours that leave twice a day from the base lodge area at 9:30am for the early birds and at 12:30 for those with a more relaxed pace to getting on the hill. The mountain hosts are geared up in fancy blue jackets.

If you really want to get off the beaten track, cat skiing is also available on Mount Kirkup approximately six times a day. You just pay on a per-run basis.

The best place to stay is in nearby Rossland , a laid-back mountain town with a mining history. A variety of hotels, bed and breakfasts, and hostels are available along with a decent selection of restaurants.

For something completely different, you can stay in your own hostel-style cabin midway up the mountain. This new offering, called Constella, consists of six cabins and a central clubhouse.

Red Mountain is part of the IKON Pass program.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

  • Perfect for intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders
  • Located near the town of Golden, BC, and less than a 2-hour drive from Banff, AB

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is located near the town of Golden , British Columbia. This resort is noted for its frequent dumps of powder snow, and is a true skier's mountain. The large dumps of snow help the resort achieve its average snowfall of 24 feet of snow each season.

The terrain here is intense; 80 percent of the runs are suited to intermediate and advanced skiers . Make sure you have your skiing legs tuned up, Kicking Horse has some of the longest runs around.

An eight-passenger gondola will whisk you up to the top in 12 minutes, and from here, you have your choice of almost 120 different runs leading down over 4,300 vertical feet. In addition to the gondola, three other fixed-grip chairlifts and a surface lift are available.

The base area at Kicking Horse continues to get better and better. A new hotel is slated to open in 2023 and will also be the new air base for Selkirk Tangiers heliskiing.

Kicking Horse is part of the EPIC Pass program.

Fernie Alpine Resort

  • A 3-hour drive from Calgary, AB

Fernie has a bit of everything: wide groomers, long mogul runs, terrain parks, and five alpine bowls that catch the storms and can be full of beautiful snow.

The resort has a vertical of 3,550 feet and receives on average over 30 feet of snow. Plus, being at a lower elevation, Fernie can be a warmer place to ski than many other resorts in BC. The only watch out here is that occasionally it can rain on the hill, and this changes the snow structure.

Ten lifts, including two high-speed quads, provide good uphill capacity for the 142 runs, plus the aforementioned bowls.

The mountain has five dining options that range from coffee shops to cafeteria style, right through to sit-down full-service restaurants. Be sure to check out the Lost Boys Café at the very top for spectacular views.

Accommodation ranges from ski-in/ski-out options on the hill to more affordable places in the main town of Fernie, just five to 10 minutes away.

Fernie is part of the EPIC Pass program.

Panorama Mountain Resort

  • Located near Invermere and just over a 2-hour drive from Banff, AB
  • A vertical drop of 4,625 feet

Wide-open groomers greet skiers at Panorama. Located 20 minutes from Invermere , this casual, family-friendly resort is ideal for a fun and relaxed ski vacation. Panorama skews to beginner and intermediate, with 50 percent of the runs suitable for this skill level.

Advanced skiers have their own playground in the Taynton Bowl , where all the runs are black diamond routes, steep, deep, and sure to get your heart pounding.

For those looking for a ski hill with accommodation right on the slopes, Panorama fits the bill. You can park your car here and walk everywhere. A big bonus is that all resort guests get to use the extensive outdoor pools.

Panorama has just recently finished a massive renovation and revitalization of one of the most important accommodation options at the resort. Rebranded as The Approach, this perfectly placed property now consists of stylish suites and rooms ideally located mere steps from the lifts.

The 4,625 feet of vertical drop is spread across 129 runs and is serviced by 10 lifts, including a gondola.

Panorama is part of the IKON Pass program.

Kimberley Alpine Resort

  • A popular family resort
  • Located in the Bavarian-themed small town of Kimberley

Located a very short drive up the road from the picturesque town of Kimberley, this small resort should definitely be on your BC ski resort hit list. The mountain has two unique features: North America's largest gladed terrain and longest lit run .

Four different areas on the hill all have their own look and feel: Northstar Mountain is perfect for beginners, Vimy Ridge is a mix of intermediate and black diamond runs, and Black Forest and Tamarack Ridge are full of challenging black diamond and gladed runs.

Four lifts service 80 runs zipping down 2,465 vertical feet of drop , spread across 1,800 acres. With all this terrain, it seems that you might be done skiing when the main lifts close; however, for those who want to keep going, or weren't able to make it during the day, night skiing cranks up as the sun goes down. Kimberly is one of the few resorts in BC that offers this amenity.

Off the hill, dog sledding is popular, and the Bavarian-themed small town of Kimberley has a great assortment of restaurants and accommodation options. Kimberly is part of the EPIC Pass program.

Kimberley is also an affordable ski destination and popular with families.

Whitewater

  • Located near Nelson

This funky ski resort is as old school as it gets. Located near the equally quirky town of Nelson , this local ski hill has a reputation for copious quantities of snow. In fact, Whitewater gets an average of over 40 feet of snow every season.

The ski hill is compact and has a local ski hill vibe, with an unusual cast of characters skiing and living life to the fullest. For the 2023/24 season, Whitewater is adding a new fixed-grip quad chair to its uphill arsenal. This new chair is a significant expansion for the resort as it will open up over 160 acres of new terrain in the Silver King Ridge area suitable for advanced and strong intermediate skiers.

Other lifts at the resort include three fixed grip lifts (one quad, one triple, one double) along with a handle tow, service 2,367 acres of skiable terrain , and the vertical drop is just over 2,000 feet .

A wide variety of accommodation options are available in nearby Nelson. Proudly different and noted as a hotbed of "counter-culture," your off-hill experiences could be just as crazy as the ones on hill.

Mount Washington

  • Located on Vancouver Island
  • A budget-friendly resort

Long a local treasure on Vancouver Island, Mount Washington Alpine Resort is well worth the effort to get to. An affordable ski destination , the resort has eight lifts and a vertical drop of just over 1,500 feet . When it snows here, it can be massive — the resort claims to receive over 33 feet of snow a year.

The pace here is relaxed and family-friendly. It's a perfect place to learn how to ski , and the four magic carpets make getting back to the top for beginners easy. For intermediate and advanced skiers, a wide variety of runs are on offer, from long cruisers right through to glades. The view from the peak is stunning on a clear day.

Off the hill, you'll find 55 kilometers of cross-country trails, 25 kilometers of snowshoeing, a tubing park, and fat tire bike trails.

A fun family event is to take a few hours and wander over to the Tube Park for some slip-sliding fun. Four chutes complete with a hump two-thirds of the way down make for a wild ride – especially if you get the liftie to give your group a spin as you head down.

Note that the road up to the mountain requires that you have good winter tires, and if it is really dumping snow and the flashing chain lights are on, tire chains must be used.

Skiing the Powder Highway in BC: 2 Week Itinerary

Plan the ultimate ski trip on British Columbia’s Powder Highway with ski resort info and tips on where to stay, things to do, best restaurants, and more.

Two people standing for photo on snowy ski slope dressed in skiing gear and equipment

The Powder Highway is a ~700 mile loop located in eastern British Columbia’s Kootenay Rockies that is home to seven different ski resorts , a number of vibrant little mountain towns, and super friendly locals. Known for (you guessed it)…powder, iconic ski resorts, and incredible terrain in some of the prettiest mountains in North America, this is a road trip that should be on every skier’s and snowboarder’s bucketlist.

I was recently granted Dual Citizenship with Canada (a story for another day), so I wanted to go up there and check out the Canadian Rockies and the towns I’ve been researching. Maybe I’d want to live in one of these small Powder Highway towns one day?

On our road trip, we visited 5 out of the 7 Powder Highway Ski Resorts, focusing our time in Fernie, Golden, Revelstoke, Nelson, and Rossland. We skied a total of 10 resort days, hiked the local trail systems with our dogs, explored the charming little towns, and even managed to squeeze in a day of heli-skiing. We had an absolutely amazing time.

The trip was a lot of work to plan and prepare for, so in this blog post, I’m going to share all of my tips for planning an epic ski trip on the Powder Highway. I’ve organized everything into an easy to follow two week itinerary which can be adjusted based on your personal travel desires. In addition to providing important details of the ski areas, I also include things to do on your off-days, awesome restaurants to eat at, and where to stay on the Powder Highway.

Rogers Pass on the Powder Highway between Revelstoke and Golden

Also, if you have dogs, bring them along! We brought both of ours, and they had a blast too. All of the towns and accommodations I recommend are dog-friendly, and I include some daily suggestions for getting your pups outside too.

Side note: The local tourism boards covered the costs of our accommodations and lift tickets on this trip. As always, I strive to share my honest experiences and all words are my own.

Plan a ski trip of a lifetime on British Columbia’s Powder Highway with the tips below.

Where is the powder highway.

The Powder Highway is in the Southeast corner of British Columbia. What makes it really convenient for travelers coming from the US is that Rossland, where you can either start or end your trip, is only 6 miles from the US/Canada border crossing in Frontier, Washington.

How to Get to the Powder Highway

You have a few different options for getting to the Powder Highway, depending on where you are coming from.

Driving from the US: If you are traveling from the Northwestern United States and you have a vehicle with 4×4, I suggest packing up your car and driving. We drove from Salt Lake City to Fernie where we hopped onto the Powder Highway in just over 12 hours.

Fly into Spokane : If you prefer to fly domestic, Spokane is 121 miles to Rossland.

Fly into Calgary: Calgary is the closest international airport to the Powder Highway. Calgary is 165 miles from Golden and 200 miles from Fernie. One option would be to start in Fernie and travel clockwise to Golden and then cut back to Calgary. This would have you skip the drive between Fernie and Golden to save time. Doing so, heli-skiing at Panorama like I did wouldn’t be an option, but there are lots of other heli-skiing operators in every town.

What type of car do you need for the Powder Highway?

I highly recommend a vehicle with 4×4 . Even though it didn’t snow too much during our trip, the roads were still quite icy.

Regardless of whether your vehicle has 4×4,   winter tires are required  (indicated by M&S or the snowflake in a mountain symbol) on the Powder Highway from October 1 to March 31. We have the Bridgestone Blizzaks on our car, and they performed well in the conditions we encountered.

Powder Highway Map

Below you’ll find my Powder Highway Map that I made in Google that also has other points of interest (restaurants, hotels, things to do) for your route. Bookmark this blog post so you can refer to this map on your phone during your trip!

Two Week Powder Highway Itinerary

How long do you need to complete the full Powder Highway? I’d say at least two weeks. We took three weeks and found the pace offered a nice balance of being able to explore fully without feeling too rushed. We spent four nights in each destination, with two days of resort skiing, and one full day off to hike or do another activity. Could I have spent even more time up there? Absolutely. But at least now I know what each place is like and which ones I’d really like to go back to.

Knowing that not everyone can take three full weeks off, here is a suggested 2 week itinerary for the Powder Highway. Below I’ll share lots of tips and recommendations for each Powder Highway destination, so if you have more time, you’ll have some ideas for how to spend it. And if you only have time for a quick trip, pick one or two of these destinations to enjoy.

We started in Fernie, so I’ll start there, but you can easily adjust your starting point.

  • Day 1 – Drive to Fernie / Explore town
  • Day 2 – Ski Fernie Alpine Resort
  • Day 3 – Ski Fernie or Explore the local trails / Drive to Inveremere
  • Day 4 – Go Heli-Skiing from Panorama / Drive to Golden
  • Day 5 – Ski Kicking Horse
  • Day 6 – Ski Kicking Horse or Hike to Wapta Falls
  • Day 7 – Drive over Rogers Pass to Revelstoke / Explore town

Fernie, British Columbia

As far as towns on the Powder Highway go, Fernie might have been my favorite. It’s got an adorable town center with great restaurants, cute shops and all of the essentials, without feeling too commercial. The ski area is a quick 5 minute drive from town.

The downtown area in Fernie, British Columbia

Skiing Fernie Alpine Resort

Fernie Alpine Resort is a sizeable mountain (2,500 acres) with a 7 main lifts and huge variety in terrain for both intermediate and advanced skiers. During our visit, the snow quality was variable, but once we found the right aspects, we discovered some beautiful soft pockets of snow, including wind buff which is my favorite type of snow. Because of the conditions, we didn’t venture too far off-piste, but in addition to the 142 named runs, Fernie has 5 large alpine bowls that looked like they would be a lot of fun after a storm.

We were at Fernie on the weekend, and didn’t have to wait in any lines. The mountain is very family-friendly, and we saw a lot of kiddos ripping around lower on the mountain.

Right in the heart of the Lizard Range, the views all over the mountain were gorgeous and gave us a sample of what we were in for as we drove further north.

Other Things to Do in Fernie in Winter

Go Snowshoeing – Fernie has an extensive trail network for winter exploring. We enjoyed a loop in Mount Fernie Provincial Park, including a nice easy stretch of trail along Lizard creek that offered picturesque views. I highly recommend snowshoes even if it doesn’t look like you need them. We spent a lot of time post-holing and really wish we had brought snowshoes along. Snowshoe rentals are available at the local gear shop in town called GearHub Sports . Make sure to pick up a Fernie winter trail map while you’re there. This is also a great place to stop into if you need to pick up any additional gear or winter layers for your trip. We didn’t have time to do it, but I also heard great things about snowshoeing to Fairy Falls.

Hike to the Montane Hut – This is a multi-use trail network that is super convenient to town. They have dedicated nordic-only trails for cross country skiing, as well as multi-use dog-friendly trails for winter hiking, snowshoeing, and fat biking, which you can also rent at the GearHub. For a fun adventure, follow the Montane Blue Trail for just over 3 miles to the Montane Hut where you can warm up and enjoy wide open views of the Elk Valley.

Walk the Fernie Town Trail – Enjoy an afternoon stroll along the Elk River. If you stay at the Snow Valley Lodge like we did, this is easily accessible from the hotel.

Where to Stay in Fernie

We stayed at Snow Valley Lodging , where we stayed in two different types of rooms. The first night we were in a One-Bedroom Dog-Friendly Suite with a queen sized bed and a small kitchen. The rest of our trip, we stayed in one of the Tiny Houses, which gave us a taste of of tiny house life. The tiny house was tastefully decorated, very clean, and the furniture was comfy. The kitchen had everything we needed, and they also had a cozy dog bed and treats for our pups which was a nice touch. Overall, we loved the novelty of the tiny house, but as a warning, the tiny houses are very small. With all of our winter gear and two dogs, we felt a little bit cramped. If we were to visit again in winter, we’d probably choose the one bedroom suite room we were in the first night.

The Snow Valley Lodge was a great location within walking distance to several restaurants and the Town Trail, as well as a 5 minute drive to the town center. They also had free fat bike rentals available at the hotel.

Where to Eat in Fernie

For such a small town, Fernie had no shortage of good food. Before I get into recommendations, I’ll mention that I am on a plant-based diet (I don’t eat anything that comes from animals). All of the restaurant suggestions in this blog post (unless otherwise noted) serve meat and dairy, but they also had enough plant-based options to keep us plant-based folks happy.

  • Curry Bowl – Asian inspired curries, noodles, steamed buns, and apps
  • Himalayan Spice Bistro – Indian and Nepalese
  • Funky Goat Pizza – awesome takeout pizza with vegan cheese available
  • Yamagoya – Most popular spot in town. Sushi focused but have a couple of plant-based dishes including vegan sushi and ramen

Invermere and Panorama

We only spent 1 night in Inveremere, the night before we went heli-skiing. We didn’t ski Panorama Mountain Resort, but I have heard that it has some of the prettiest views out of all of the ski resorts on the Powder Highway.

Heli-Skiing at Panorama

We decided to spring for one day of heli-skiing on our trip. We went with RK Heliski which is located near the base of Panorama. We went with them because their prices were less expensive than the operators near Revelstoke and Golden, and they offered heli packages for intermediate off-piste skiers (me!). Plus they had availability on our travel dates. Win-win-win! I’d never been heli-skiing before this, so I was feeling pretty nervous, but I’m so glad we did it because it was a blast and nothing we skied felt too scary or beyond my capabilities. The biggest thing is you need to be comfortable skiing variable conditions and have a decent amount of experience off of the groomers. We spent most of the day above the clouds in bright blue skies with non-stop views in every direction.

We did the 5-run package and were in a group of 8 people with two guides. I felt very comfortable with our guides and our pilot.

Other things to do in Invermere in Winter

Lake Windermere Whiteway – Over 18 miles long, this ice skating trail on frozen Lake Windermere is the longest in the world. Don’t worry if you don’t ice skate, it’s also suitable for walking or nordic skiing, and it’s dog-friendly too. A convenient access point is Kinsmen Beach.

bc ski trip

Where to Stay in Invermere

We would have stayed at Panorama, but everything was really expensive and last-minute availability was limited Instead, we stayed at the Cooper Point Resort in Invermere. Our room was clean, spacious, and quiet.

Golden, British Columbia

Golden is home to Kicking Horse Mountain, known for it’s “champagne powder” and a surplus of advanced terrain. As a small town (population 3,700) with industrial roots, I was impressed with Golden’s fantastic restaurants and cozy accommodations. The town was very easy to get around (no Google maps needed) and had all of the essentials you might need while you’re traveling. If you’re looking for party scene, Golden is probably not your place. But if you’re looking to get outside in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, get ready for some jaw-dropping beauty.

bc ski trip

Skiing Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

With 4,314 feet of vertical and over 3,400 acres to explore, Kicking Horse is a large, steep, and rugged mountain that intermediate to expert skiers will love. There is only one way to get to the top, and that’s the Golden Eagle Express Gondola. Once you’re up there, you can ski one of Kicking Horse’s 85 named chutes, cruise the open bowls, or stay high and ski the gladed areas around the Stairway to Heaven Lift which is named appropriately for the incredible 360 degree view at the top.

bc ski trip

There was more hike-to terrain at Kicking Horse than any other mountain we visited on the Powder Highway. On our second day, we hiked to the top of Terminator 1 Peak which gives access to additional advanced and expert terrain. There were a few parts of the hike that were pretty steep and intimidating, but thankfully the boot pack was well defined. If you haven’t done a lot of hiking in ski boots, I’d definitely recommend a backpack with straps to carry your skis, so can you can use your poles to balance and propel you uphill. We skied down T1’s South Ridge and were able to find some nice stashes even though it hadn’t snowed in a while.

Note: If you’re not a confident or experienced skier, skip the hiking and stick to the areas you can easily traverse to.

Hiking up T1 at Kicking Horse Mountain in Golden British Columbia

Snow quality at Kicking Horse lives up to it’s reputation. It was light and fluffy and reminded me very much of Utah. Despite the dry spell, off-piste was chalky, and the groomers skied fantastic.

Kicking Horse also has a lot of lift-accessed side country for those who want to get even more rad. If you want to explore these areas, get knowledgeable about avalanche conditions and be prepared with proper backcountry gear (backpack, beacon, probe, shovel, etc) which you can pick up at Golden’s Avalanche Safety Store .

Looking for a summer Canadian road trip? Check out our 2-week Icefields Parkway itinerary which takes you through the heart of the Rockies.

Other Things to Do in Golden in Winter

Hike to Wapta Falls – If you have an extra day in Golden, I highly recommend the winter hike to Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park. With the cold temps and low water levels, Wapta Falls partially freezes over, and it’s a truly stunning site. It’s just under 5 miles round trip, and most of the trail is flat besides the final approach to the falls. Unless you go right after a big snowfall, snowshoes aren’t needed, but microspikes are highly recommended if you want to get close to the falls. The area near the falls was cold and misty, so make sure to layer appropriately for winter hiking . Parking is right off Trans-Canada Highway 1 about 18 miles east of Golden.

bc ski trip

Where to Stay in Golden

We stayed at the Cedar House Chalets in Golden, and we had our own stand alone cabin that was the most private of our trip. We had our own private driveway and didn’t see any other guests during our 4 night stay. Our chalet was the dog-friendly Sunflower Chalet which had two bedrooms, a full kitchen, wood burning stove and our own private hot tub with a view of the mountains.

bc ski trip

Where to Eat in Golden

The food in Golden was some of our favorite on this Powder Highway trip, and it just so happens that our three favorite restaurants were all right next door to each other.

  • Whitetooth Bistro – refined mountain dining with a focus on fresh ingredients and creative flavors
  • Reposados – awesome tacos, cocktails, and vegan churros! Make a reservation to dine in your own private igloo
  • Rockwater Grill – really tasty pub food along with live music (in normal times)

Town Center in Golden British Columbia

Revelstoke, British Columbia

Revelstoke is the most well known destination on the Powder Highway. Maybe it’s because Revelstoke Mountain has the most vertical of any mountain in North America. Or maybe because the area is stunningly beautiful, nestled between the Monashee and Selkirk Mountains with endless outdoor recreation. The town has ample tourist infrastructure, is incredibly dog friendly, and your time here will certainly go by too quickly.

bc ski trip

Skiing Revelstoke Mountain

With 5,260 feet of vertical and 3,121 acres, you’re legs will be burning after a day at Revelstoke Mountain . But make sure you save some energy for day 2. Due to it’s sheer size, I highly recommend devoting two full days to skiing Revelstoke so you can explore all of the nooks and crannies.

No matter where you want to go on the mountain, you first have to get on the base gondola. It’s the only way up, and the lines on a weekend powder day can get backed up, so be prepared. We skied on a Sunday after a fresh foot of pow, and luckily the lines dispersed once we got up from the base. We spent most of our time up top, lapping the Stoke Chair and the Ripper chair, occasionally taking a groomed run down to the upper gondola loading station.

Most of the skiing here is below the tree line, so your opportunities for tree skiing are pretty endless. Just pick a line and go. In some areas you do need to be careful though to avoid unexpected cliffs.

bc ski trip

North Bowl is a short boot pack that was way less steep than the hike we did at Kicking Horse. We got there just after it opened and found ourselves in knee deep powder. Just be warned that the journey back to the lift along Big Woody is a long one. This is also the one area of the mountain we didn’t have any cell service, so be careful not to lose your ski buddies.

Note: Revelstoke is on the Ikon Pass and Mountain Collective Pass.

Other Things to Do in Revelstoke in Winter

Snowmobiling – With 40-60 feet of annual snow in the high alpine, Revelstoke offers some of the best snowmobiling in North America. Due to avalanche risk , I highly recommend going with a guide so you can have a safe, fun day of exploring. My partner Ryan did the Sledder Tour with Great Canadian Tours , which was a 3.5 hour off-trail snowmobile tour. He got some huge face shots, but he also got stuck and had to dig himself out a number of times due to the fresh, deep snow. No off-trail experience is required, but it sounded like pretty challenging riding conditions for someone who has never ridden off-trail. If you’re looking for something more mellow, their Snow Fun and Lakeview tours stick to established trails (which would be more my pace). Before you go, check with them on the gear and apparel you need to make sure you are prepared.

bc ski trip

Walk Along the Columbia River – Revelstoke sits on the bank of the mighty Columbia River. If you park at Centennial Park in town, you can walk on the paved Greenbelt (leashes required for dogs) or on a series of dirt paths (off-leash ok) that go for miles.

Where to Stay in Revelstoke

We stayed at the Boulder Mountain Resort in one of the pet-friendly One-Bedroom Luxury Premium Cabins. Our cabin had a king-sized bed that was incredibly comfortable (the best of our trip), an amazing steam shower that felt so good after skiing, and a well stocked kitchen with coffee, tea, and everything you needed to cook with. I really loved our stay here. They also had RV campsites and a number of smaller cabins that also looked very cute.

My only complaint about our stay here is we were in cabin #1 which was closest to the hot tub. The hot tub was supposed to close at 10pm, but every night people were in the hot tub talking loudly and playing music much later and we could hear those conversations very clearly from our bedroom. If we were to go back, I’d request a cabin furthest from the hot tub (which would also be furthest from the road).

The location was on the opposite end of town from the ski resort, but it still only took about 15 minutes to get to the mountain each day.

bc ski trip

Where to Eat in Revelstoke

Revelstoke has lots of restaurants, and on the weekend, they do get busy, especially with limited dine-in capacity. It wouldn’t hurt to make a reservation. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Dose Coffee – Awesome hot drinks, sandwiches, and treats. Loved the golden chai and the TLT sandwich was to die for (skip the aioli if you’re plant-based)
  • Main Street Cafe – Hearty and healthy breakfast and lunch options
  • Taco Club – Yummy tacos and burritos
  • Woolsey Creek Bistro – Farm to Table restaurant with an emphasis on local ingredients

Breakfast at the Main Street Cafe in Revelstoke

Nelson, British Columbia

Sitting on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, the waterfront town of Nelson was the largest and most vibrant on our trip (population 10,600). If you want live music, great restaurants, yoga classes, spas, and a bustling downtown, Nelson is the spot for you. Despite all of the modern amenities and entertainment, Nelson is a Heritage City with 350 restored heritage buildings making it a really beautiful town.

The waterfront in Nelson, British Columbia

Skiing Whitewater Ski Resort

Whitewater Ski Resort in Nelson’s Selkirk Mountains has big mountain skiing with an old school vibe. While I can’t speak to how busy the weekends get, midweek there we no lines at any of Whitewater’s three lifts, and we skied right on the lift every single run. There are no hotels at the resort, nor is Whitewater on any of the multi-resort passes, and we got the sense that most of the people on the mountain were local – an atmosphere I really dug.

Whitewater Ski Resort in Nelson on the Powder Highway

Whitewater averages 40 feet of light, dry powder a year, and has some of the best tree skiing I’ve ever done. Normally I’m intimidated by tree skiing, but the trees at Whitewater were perfectly spaced, making for some really fun turns, even for intermediate skiers. Like many resorts, tree wells do pose a hazard at Whitewater, so educate yourself and always ski with a friend.

While Whitewater is smaller than the other resorts on the Powder Highway, Whitewater has incredible lift-accessed backcountry, which adds a ton of acreage to the skiable terrain for those who are prepared with the avalanche education and gear.

If you’re sick of french fries and burgers or PB&Js at your car by now, the food at Whitewater Ski Resort was some of the freshest I’ve ever found at a ski area with a variety of plant-based options. I highly recommend grabbing lunch in the day lodge.

We were lucky to get a few surprise inches of fresh snow on our second day, and that taste of Whitewater’s cold smoke, as they call it, left us wanting more. Whitewater Ski Resort is one of the Powder Highway Mountains that I’d love to return to, especially on a deeper day.

Other Things to Do in Nelson in Winter

Ainsworth Hot Springs – I forgot my swimsuit at the hotel in Golden, so we didn’t have a chance to explore Ainsworth Hot Springs, but I wish we had! Located 30 miles north of Nelson, you can take a day trip up there or you can stop in on your drive down from Revelstoke. Reservations are required for day use, so check their website for details.

Walking on the Great Northern Rail Trail – If you’re looking for a convenient, off-leash friendly place to exercise your dog after skiing, this is your spot. We also saw a number of people nordic skiing here. See the Google Map above for where to park. The trail is also accessible from the Lodgen Lodge where we stayed.

Explore town – Out of all of the towns on the Powder Highway, Nelson is definitely worth taking a couple of hours to walk around the downtown area.

bc ski trip

Where to Stay in Nelson

Nelson has a number of convenient hotels right in town, but we opted for a more unique and rustic experience. We stayed at the Lodgen Lodge , which was a 15 minute drive to Whitewater and about 25 minutes to Nelson. The Lodgen Lodge consists of four different stand alone cabins nestled in the woods far away from roads and other structures, offering the ultimate peaceful getaway and a chance to unplug. Cabins are accessed by a short walking path, and the owner helps transport your luggage to your cabin. The lack of cars contributes to a really quiet environment.

We stayed in the pet-friendly Cottonwood Cabin which was the most isolated of the cabins. It has two bedrooms, a huge balcony, a wood burning stove, a dining area, kitchen, and a massive soaking tub. The cabin was cozy, thoughtfully appointed with decor from the owner’s travels, and I absolutely loved waking up in the loft looking out the window into the snowy forest.

Walking trails are accessible directly from the cabins, and free snowshoes are available for guests to use. Keep an eye out near the viewpoint for the liquor cabinet that’s nailed to a tree. The owners stock it, along with clean shot glasses, so you can warm your belly on a cold winter’s day….even though I don’t drink, I thought that was a fun touch.

bc ski trip

Where to Eat in Nelson

Nelson was the only place we found on the Powder Highway with a fully plant-based restaurant, which we were obviously excited about. In addition, Nelson has an eclectic mix of options, and we only had time to scratch the surface.

  • Red Light Ramen – Asian inspired soups and appetizers
  • Busaba Thai – Flavorful thai food
  • Sprout Plant Based Eatery – Awesome vegan apps, bowls, wraps, and smoothies. Highly recommend the cauliflower wings.
  • Empire Coffee – Treats, vegan muffins, a daily bean pie, sandwiches and awesome coffee drinks

Rossland, British Columbia

Rossland , home of RED Mountain, was the last stop of our Powder Highway itinerary. Located in the southwestern Kootenays, this Gold Rush era town is 10 minutes from the US/Canadian border and a quick 2 hour drive from Spokane, making Rossland an excellent winter destination for Americans, even if you can’t explore the entire Powder Highway. You won’t find any chains, traffic lights or fast food (except a Subway) in Rossland. Instead, you’ll find cool boutique shops and tasty restaurants in historic buildings, a huge network of trails, a fantastic cat skiing operation, and the oldest ski resort in Western Canada.

The Powder Highway's RED Mountain at dusk

Skiing RED Mountain

RED Mountain is deceivingly large, with 5 different skiable peaks, 8 lifts, and 3,850 acres to explore. To help you get a lay of the land, RED offers free mountain tours every day at 9am and 12:30pm that leave right from the base.

Unfortunately snow coverage was a little thin during our visit, so we were careful to not venture too far off the beaten path. Instead, we enjoyed bluebird skies and had a fabulous time cruising RED’s wide groomers, some of which were pretty steep.

Bluebird day at RED Mountain on the Powder Highway

One of the most unique things about RED Mountain is they offer $10 cat rides that transport you to the top of Mt. Kirkup. These cat runs give you access to 1,600 feet of vertical in ungroomed bowls, trees, and hopefully lots of fresh snow, and I can only imagine how fun that would be on a powder day. No reservations or avalanche gear is required. We didn’t get to experience this on our February 2022 trip since cat operations are temporarily suspended due to the pandemic. The latest status can be found here .

Note: If you have an Ikon Pass, you get 7 days at RED Mountain and the Resort also offers some additional perks, so make to to enquire when you arrive.

Other Things to Do in Rossland in Winter

Winter Hiking – We spent a day doing the Mt. Crowe Cabin Loop , an 8 mile hike to a series of day use warming huts. We did a little bit of post-holing, but overall the trail was well compacted, so we didn’t need snowshoes or microspikes. The trailhead is just north of Strawberry Pass and is shown in the Google Map above. In addition, there is also a dog-friendly trail system accessible directly from the base of RED Mountain or from the Centennial Trailhead near town.

Visit the Get Lost Adventure Center – Onsite at RED Mountain’s Get Lost Adventure Center , you can sign up for guided backcountry Cat Skiing, winter paragliding, fishing and more. They also rent fat bikes and can point you to the trails I just mentioned.

The Viewpoint Cabin on the Mt. Crowe Cabin Loop - a great winter hike

Where to Stay in Rossland

The Josie Hotel is a boutique luxury hotel at the base of RED Mountain that offers a ski-in/ski-out experience. From the moment you walk into the lobby, you know you’re in for a treat. Our room with a king-sized bed was spacious and comfortable, the Velvet Restaurant (and room service) was delicious, hotel staff were very helpful, and to top it off, the Josie is dog-friendly.

When you arrive, the hotel staff grab your skis and take them to the ski concierge desk. I didn’t realize what a convenience this was until we were able to boot up in our room, take the elevator down to grab our skis, and walk right out the back door to the chairlift which was a mere 50 feet away. After driving so much and lugging all of our gear around for the last few weeks, this was an absolute delight.

After skiing make sure to book one of the private cedar barrel saunas to ease your muscles or sit by the fire on the outdoor patio to watch as the stars come out. The Josie also has a spa, but it was closed during our stay.

The Josie is a splurge, so if it’s out of your budget, there are a number of hotels including a hostel at the base of RED Mountain.

The Josie Hotel is ski-in/ski-out at RED Mountain

Where to Eat in Rossland

Rossland is small, but there are plenty of restaurant options to satisfy you during your stay. These were our favorite spots.

  • Velvet Restaurant – Located inside the Josie and open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Seasonally inspired food and drink. While plant-based options weren’t indicated on the menu, the chef was very accommodating.
  • Flying Steamshovel – Modernized pub food. Get the bang bang cauliflower!

Awesome itinerary. How can I print it? Thank you! Jane

Hi Jane, toward the beginning of this blog post there’s a box that says “Get a Free PDF of This Guide” — you can download and print the full guide from there!

Wow, what a great time, and incredibly useful information here! Thanks so much. Will be in Revelstoke next week, will check out some of the restaurants.

This trip is on my list. We have a cabin just south of Rossland on Lake Roosevelt and it would be an easy hop over the border for us:) thanks for all the info.

Hi Andrea, thanks for reading & glad we could help plan your trip 🙂

thanks for all great info- want to do similar trip with our dog- what did you do with dogs while you skied each day? did someone walk them?

Hi Terry, we either left them in the car and let them out at lunch (it wasn’t that cold when we were there, so we felt ok about that) or in the hotel if it was allowed. You can also find dog sitters on Rover. Enjoy your trip!

Hey Kristen – Been a follower of your blog since Van # 1 with the fold out bed and shower. It’s been great to see the development of your outdoor passions and skills and how your blog/website has grown over the years. I wondering if you can give me an approximate budget for your trip? I wanna do the powder highway this winter and will also be scouting possible living places. ~ Michael

The Powder Highway

Your Road To Winter The Powder Highway

British Columbia’s Kootenay Rockies is home to the POWDER HIGHWAY®, where deep snow, funky towns, and some of the most downhome, stash-laden, adventure-packed ski resorts in North America exist. This legendary place offers an abundance of deep Kootenay powder melded with authentic ski towns, full of vibrant locals.

Throw in some of the world’s most renowned heli-skiing and cat-skiing operations, as well as highly-coveted backcountry lodges and this area of British Columbia stands out as one of the premier ski destinations.

Consistent snowfall, deep powder and celebrated ranges like the Rockies, Monashees, Selkirks, and Purcells, all accessed from scenic towns like Fernie, Nelson, Rossland, Golden, Revelstoke, Invermere, and Kimberley, make the region a must-visit for winter sport enthusiasts.

And it doesn’t matter where you start your journey. Maybe in Revelstoke, where people have been skiing for 100 years, or Nelson, where snow buries charming heritage houses, or Golden, where mountains scratch crystal blue skies. Or perhaps your journey begins down in Rossland, up at Panorama or over in Fernie, where steep trees, ‘cold smoke’ and storybook villages have captured the hearts of enthusiasts.

Once here, one highway connects many ski and snowboard adventures. But don’t fret, there’s no rush. The perfect snow, spectacular mountains and friendly people will wait. On the Powder Highway, there’s plenty to go around.

The Powder Highway, is your road to winter.

See the Experience

The Powder Highway is a circular route through the Kootenay Rockies that passes by 8 alpine ski resorts, over 20 backcountry lodges, and numerous heli- and cat-ski operators. Not to mention the awesome little towns with unique local cultures all to themselves.

Take the time you’ve allotted and double it…and have a blast!

Professional skier and full-time road tripper Dave Treadway tells us why the Powder Highway, in the southeast corner of British Columbia, should be at the top of your winter playtime destination list.

The Powder Highway World-Class Ski Resorts

The region showcases eight alpine resorts.

Fernie Alpine Resort

Fernie Alpine Resort receives an average of 9 m (30 ft) of legendary powder snow each season and attracts a wide range of skiers and riders from around the globe. With over 2,500 acres of skiable terrain, 142 runs, 5 alpine bowls, state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming equipment, and an exceptional beginner’s area, Fernie is a true winter playground. Discover what a great winter vacation to the Canadian Rockies is all about – huge alpine bowls and uncrowded trails. With a mild but snowfall-heavy climate, the weather won’t send many chills down your spine, but the scenery and incredible skiing will. Link to ' What to Expect this Winter ' at the resort.

Panorama Mountain Resort

Located in the heart of the Powder Highway, Panorama Mountain Resort lives up to its name. Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies, endless vistas of snow covered summits stretch as far as your eyes can see. This place is Pure Canada. Where the best of creature comforts are bordered by stunning wilderness and a vast 2,975 acres of patrolled, skiable terrain – from beginner-perfect groomed trails to wide rolling cruisers, to the steep and deep exhilaration of Taynton Bowl to the rush of heli-skiing – all right from Panorama’s intimate and family-friendly ski-in / ski-out village. Home of Canada’s largest slopeside hot pools.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

Known as the ‘Champagne Powder Capital of Canada’ with more than 2,800 acres of skiable terrain, 121 runs, four alpine bowls, 85 chutes and 1,260 m (4,133 ft) of vertical – the fourth highest in North America. The resort also offers 5 lifts including the high-speed, eight passenger Golden Eagle Express Gondola. The winter season is complete with a tubing park, skating rink and numerous restaurants – including the Eagle’s Eye Restaurant (with overnight accommodation), located at the top of the Gondola and is Canada’s highest elevated dining experience. Stay overnight and log in the most epic first tracks imaginable.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort

Revelstoke Mountain Resort is Canada’s newest ski resort. With 1,713 m (5,620 ft) – the longest lift accessed vertical of any resort in North America, 3,121 acres of terrain and about 10 m (30-40 ft) of snow annually, it is a big mountain enthusiast’s dream come true. At over 15 km (9 mi) in length, the resort also boasts the longest ski run in North America. If you want to challenge yourself with unbelievably long fall line groomers or deep snow, and if off-piste, tree skiing sounds appealing to you, Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the place to ski. Link to ' What to Expect this Winter ' at the resort.

Kimberley Alpine Resort

Small town charm combined with sunny days and reliable snow conditions – light, fluffy, ‘Purcell’ powder and nearly no lift lineups – you can log powder filled run after run at this wonderful resort. And, if the prospect of skiing under the stars intrigues you, Kimberley Alpine Resort has one of North America’s longest illuminated runs. Perfect for families, the mountain offers everything from wide-open groomed runs, powder stashes, adventurous steeps and beautiful views in a friendly, downhome atmosphere. There’s lots of apres ski at the Stemwinder Bar and Buckhorn & Main Restaurant. Discover more at the Kimberley Alpine Resort – explore with a backcountry trip with Boulder Hut Adventures. Link to ' What to Expect this Winter ' at the resort.

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort ski area offers everything for a great day on the slopes. With soft snow, 14 runs, two terrain parks and a tube park, there is an adventure for everyone. Enjoy the uncrowded trails, fast-moving lift lines, panoramic views of the Columbia Valley and the rugged Rocky Mountains. To complete your day, the very best apres ski is here. Nothing matches an exhilarating day on the slopes more than a soothing soak in Canada’s largest natural mineral hot springs, which is included with each lift ticket. This is a unique Powder Highway experience you don’t want to miss. Link to ' What to Expect this Winter ' at the resort.

RED Mountain Resort

Fiercely independent RED Mountain Resort delivers 3,850 acres of pristine skiing, putting them in Top 10 terrain territory in North America. With a new chairlift on Topping Creek, the skier flow and access to Grey Mountain is streamlined along with an additional 7 incredible intermediate runs over 300 acres of terrain. They pride themselves on fresh turns you don't have to fight for—that’s why they claim “#1 Acres Per Skier”! Whitewater Ski Resort

Located just outside of the funky and vibrant city of Nelson, it is hard to describe its true authenticity and abundance of snow. Over 12 m (40 ft) of snow falls each season on 2,044 vertical feet of uncrowded slopes of family-friendly groomers and bumps, remarkable steeps, top-of-the-line tree-skiing and endless backcountry. This year marks a new chapter for this legendary resort with a number of upgrades and an expanded Glory Lodge. A key part of the resort’s experience is the legendary food. About Revelstoke, BC

If you haven’t yet heard about Revelstoke, you will. Formerly a cat-skiing and heli-skiing zone, this new British Columbia resort receives a massive 480 to 720 inches annually. With 5,620 vertical feet, which is 300 feet more than Whistler Blackcomb, Revelstoke offers among some of North America’s longest lift-served vertical. Its longest run, Last Spike, is 9.5 miles long.

Revelstoke’s more than 3,000 acres is accessed by a modern lift system consisting of an eight-person, high-speed gondola, high-speed quad chairs and magic carpet conveyor lifts. Revelstoke, or “Revy” as locals call it, features a new Resort Village at the base of the mountain around the new Nelson Lodge. It offers a full-service restaurant, retail and rental shops and lift ticket and skier services.

This powder-blessed ski resort is located just 3.5 miles from downtown Revelstoke, a quaint railway town of 8,500 residents, with 100 years of skiing history. Downtown offers a surprisingly exceptional dining scene, with everything from modern café/bakeries to sushi. Nightlife-seekers will be pleased to find live music at a variety of homey pubs. Revelstoke also provides a great setting for winter activities like cross-country skiing, ice- skating and snowshoeing. Or, you may choose to soothe your aches and pains in the natural hot springs or the salt-water aquatic center.

TOP REVELSTOKE HOTELS AND LODGING

Best sellers, revelstoke resort skiing.

Revelstoke skiing is mainly below treeline. Advanced intermediates and experts are the best served on a Revelstoke ski vacation with many steep, long groomers, moguls, glades and unrivaled backcountry and sidecountry access. Intermediates will also find mellow cruisers. Beginners don’t have a ton of options at Revelstoke, with only seven percent designated as beginner, so it comes as little shock that this resort is most frequented by thrill-seeking skiers and snowboarders.

Thanks to its close proximity to the resort and downtown Revelstoke, it’s also among the world’s most convenient and affordable places to base your cat-skiing or heli-skiing trip out of. Heli-skiing in Revelstoke provides virtually unlimited terrain.

The runs are too short and they seem to end right when you’ve got a nice warm rhythm going. May I suggest an alternative? How about a trio of resorts which are all listed in the top 10 North American ski areas with the most vertical feet? Revelstoke (5,620 feet), Kicking Horse (4,133 feet) and Panorama (4,019 feet) are all located on a beautiful loop of road in British Columbia known as the Powder Highway. You can visit just one of them or you can get to two or three of them. Here are a few tips for each resort: REVELSTOKE: Fly into Kelowna. From there, it is a very scenic three hour drive/shuttle ride. If you want to be ski in/ski out, Sutton Place is where to stay. There are three buildings at Sutton Place, all located slopeside and with easy access to the village. Condos are newly constructed – very nice and clean. From the base, you take two gondolas. The second gondola takes you up some very colorfully named runs such as Kill The Banker and The Conifers Of Gnarnia. The Stoke chair will then take to you the very top of the mountain and access to some great groomers and tree skiing. If it’s a cold day, there is a very well-placed warming hut at the top of the Stoke chair. A couple of dinner suggestions: Rockford in the resort village does a great breakfast and is also open for dinner. Down in the town of Revelstoke (approximately 8 minutes from the ski area) is the steakhouse 112. Excellent steaks, fish and osso bucco. They also feature live music several nights each week. KICKING HORSE: Approximately 3 hours from Revelstoke, across famous Rogers Pass. Also three hours from Calgary if you are coming the other way. The Glacier Mountaineer Lodge is the ski in/ski out option, right at the base of the gondola. Comfortable hotel rooms and condos are available. If you are looking for something a little different, stay at the Vagabond Lodge. It is more of a communal luxurious mountain cabin style of lodging and includes breakfast and lunch for guests. The Golden Eagle gondola will take you all the way up to “the alpine”. At the top, take a moment or two to soak in the 360 degree views. While much of the terrain at Kicking Horse is quite advanced, there are some wide groomers for those wishing to cruise. There are four bowls which can be accessed from the top of the gondola and most don’t require any hiking at all. If you are dining in the resort, check out Corks at the Copper Horse Lodge. The salmon is superb. Down in Golden (15 minutes from Kicking Horse), go to the Whitetooth Brewery. They have six incredible beers. If you can’t decide which one to start with, get the taster tray. The Session Ale pilsner got my vote. PANORAMA: Approximately two hours from Kicking Horse (three hours from Calgary) is Panorama. Another huge mountain, it has the largest village of the three resorts. Most of the lodging is ski in/ski out or within a one minute walk of the ski lifts. The Panorama Springs lodge has comfortable condos and is home to the popular hot pools. For the more budget-conscious, the Pine Inn has nice double rooms for incredibly low rates. Pano doesn’t have a large number of lifts but they access an enormous amount of terrain. If you want groomers, go to Skyline, off the Champagne Express – a long, sustained pitch which is perfect for cranking some wide turns. The Taynton Bowl, accessed from the Summit Quad, offers some great steeper terrain. The Cabin offers a fun dining experience with their odd-shaped tables, eclectic menu and friendly owners. The food is sensational! No visit to Panorama would be complete without visiting the legendary T-Bar. They have live music, excellent food and 29 different types of beer. Open every day from 12 noon until “late”. The Powder Highway is a great destination for skiers and riders of all levels. If you are visiting multiple resorts, take a week or more overall to really get the feel of each place. Plan so that the last resort you visit is the one which is closest to your departure airport. The Canadian dollar is quite low compared to the US dollar at the moment, so your Canadian ski trip is already “discounted” by about 30%. Go check out the Powder Highway and see what an awesome destination it is. You might want to do a few extra lunges at the gym before your trip though – these aren’t like some of those “puny” 3,000 vertical foot ski areas that you have been to in the past.
