The best part is, it’s all just a few hours in the car from the National Capital. Let this be all the inspiration you require to venture out on the road for your weekend trip.

Alwar (167.5 km from Delhi)

Alwar is quite a tourist hotspot for offering plenty of places to see and things to explore around. The Neemrana Palace located in Alwar is a popular holiday spot for the residents of Delhi and nearby areas. The Bala Qila is also known as Alwar Fort, is located on the Aravalli Range. It is 5 km long and about 1.5 km wide. Alwar’s City Palace aka Vinay Vilas Mahal, made in 1793 CE by Raja Bakhtawar Singh, is a mix of Rajputana and Islamic architectural styles. The palace has a state museum which is worth visiting.

The Sariska Tiger Reserve, a National Park and Tiger Reserve, is located in the Aravali hills is only a short distance away from Alwar. Alwar is also home to the Bhangarh Fort which is infamous for being a haunted territory. The Hill Fort Kesroli, a 14th-century fort, now a heritage hotel is also an attraction in Alwar. There is also a temple of Raja Bharathari, the brother of Raja Vikramaditya of Ujjain, who turned into a mystic in his later life due a quirk of fate.

Jaipur (150.7 km from Delhi)

The Pink City –Jaipur –is one of the best and closest destinations near Delhi. There is a lot to see and do in Jaipur that one needs more than a couple of days to explore this city. The Amer Fort, Nahargarh Fort, Jantar Mantar, City Palace, Albert Hall Museum, Galta Ji, Johari Bazaar and Tripolia Bazaar are some of the places to visit in the city.

Bharatpur (187.5 km from Delhi)

Bharatpur is known for its bird sanctuary and wetland. Also known as Lohagarh, this popular city is the ‘Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan’. One of the most striking tourist destinations of Delhi Rajasthan Weekend Tours is Bharatpur, located around 185 km away from the capital of the country. It is home to the famous Keoladeo National Park, which is a bird sanctuary enlisted as the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Located at the confluence of Banganga and Gambhir rivers, it is a winter home to over here which enriches the natural scenario.

Pushkar (418.8 km from Delhi)

It is hard to miss the city of Pushkar when one is visiting Jaipur. It is renowned for being the only destination in the world where a temple of Lord Brahma, the divine creator of the world, exists. It also has a holy lake which is believed to have come into existence when a lotus flower from the heavens fell down on earth in Pushkar long time back. Pushkar has hundreds of milky-blue temples, 52 bathing ghats and shops selling traditional weapons and antique silver jewellery –pretty much everything for everyone. Camel safari, fire camping on desert, and witnessing the Kalbelia Dance are also popular in Pushkar. The city hosts a Camel Fair on the full moon after Diwali that continues for 14 days.

Mandawa (232.2 km from Delhi)

Mandawa bestows a feeling of living in the midst of royalty with its impressive castles. Located in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, the fort of Mandawa was built by Thakur Nawal Singh in 1755 AD. The fort is marked for its painted arched gateway enhanced with the frescoes of Lord Krishna with his cowherds and the cattle. The walls of the spacious and airy rooms are beautified by paintings and mirror work. The property has now been turned into a heritage hotel.

Rajasthan is one of the most visited states in India. It's not surprising because it shows India at its most colorful, iconic and exotic best. Most of the things that come to mind when you think of India can be found in Rajasthan—palaces, forts, desert, camels, and elephants. Don't miss visiting these top tourist places in Rajasthan.

The "Pink City" of Jaipur forms part of India's renowned Golden Triangle Tourist Circuit and was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not surprisingly, the city is one of Rajasthan's most popular tourist destinations. It has many famous forts and palaces, with most of them boasting evocative views and elaborate architecture. Staying in Jaipur is particularly enjoyable. Accommodations are reasonably priced and many have been converted from heritage properties, giving guests a very regal experience! Jaipur is an outstanding place to go shopping too.

Udaipur is often said to be the most romantic city in India, as it's filled with expansive lakes and palaces. The landmark City Palace Complex , which stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Pichola, dominates the city and the royal family still lives in part of it. Many personal royal heirlooms, family photos, and other memorabilia are displayed in the City Palace Museum , giving Udaipur a very regal feel. You can even stay in the City Palace! Alternatively, for those on a budget there are heritage hotels by the lake with amazing views, such as the Jagat Niwas Palace hotel.

Affectionately called the "Blue City" because of its blue painted buildings, Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan. The walled old part of the city is presided over by Mehrangarh Fort , which provides the best outlook across Jodhpur's blue buildings. It's one of the largest and best maintained forts in India. Inside are a number of ornate palaces, a museum, and restaurant. There many inexpensive yet characterful places to stay in Jodhpur with views of the fort. It's refreshing to do nothing but relax on their rooftops and soak up the atmosphere.

Bishnoi is a community of nature worshipers only 45 minutes or so from Jodhpur and can be covered in a day trip. Bishnoi Village Safari organizes excursions and accommodations.

A remarkable sandstone city that rises magically from the sand dunes of the Thar desert, Jaisalmer looks like it's straight out of an Arabian Nights fable. Its mesmerizing ancient fort, built in 1156, is perched high on a pedestal overlooking the city. Inside the fort is alive and spellbinding. It boasts palaces, several temples, and some elegant havelis (mansions), as well as shops and other residences. These top things to do in Jaisalmer cover the best of the city and its surroundings. Stay at a hotel with a fort view or a desert camp.

If you're keen for a desert camel safari experience but without the crowds and commercialization, Osian is an ideal alternative option. This small town is about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur, on the way to Bikaner, and is surrounded by several sand dunes. Intricately carved stone temples dating back to the 8th century are interesting too. Stay at Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp or Reggie's Camel Camp .

For most of the year, Pushkar is a sleepy little holy town that attracts a lot of backpackers and hippie types. However, it really comes alive for a couple of weeks in October or November, when the Pushkar Camel Fair hits town. Pushkar is worth visiting at any time of year if you want to chill out. Sadly, the town isn't like it used to be though. These days, Pushkar is much more westernized and tourist-focused. The priests by the bathing ghats (steps) are very forceful in demanding donations. Avoid that area, and head to the Pushkar market for some fun shopping instead!

The remote and quaint desert town of Bikaner receives less tourists than many other prominent destinations in Rajasthan because of its out-of-the-way location over five hours north of Jodhpur. The main attractions are the atmospheric walled Old City and fort. Bikaner is renowned for the rather startling Karni Mata rat temple nearby as well. The Karni Mata Festival, held to worship the rats there, is one of the quirkiest festivals in India. A Camel Fair also happens in Bikaner every January. Stay at the exceptional Narendra Bhawan heritage hotel for an unforgettable trip! It's one of India's most beautifully restored heritage hotels.

Nagaur lies about half-way between Jodhpur and Bikaner, making the town a convenient destination to break your journey. Its massive 12th century fort, Ahhichatragarh, has been restored to its former glory by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust and won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation in 2002. The fort hosts the World Sacred Spirit Festival in February each year. The Nagaur Cattle Fair -- touted as the second largest in India -- is an added annual attraction in January or February.

Shekhawati Region

If you're an art lover, or even someone who's into architecture and history, the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan is well worth including on your itinerary. This unique region is often referred to as the world's largest open air art gallery, with old havelis (mansions) having walls adorned with intricate painted frescoes. Staying in one is a highlight! Shekhawati is located in the Delhi-Jaipur-Bikaner triangle, and is refreshingly free of tourists!

Rural tourism is growing in Rajasthan and the Pali district, between Jodhpur and Udaipur, is perfect for visitors who want to explore Rajasthan beyond its cities. Bera is one of the top destinations there due to the prevalence of wild leopards, which roam the rugged terrain and can be spotted on safari. At Jojawar, the 300 year-old Rajput fort has been converted into a heritage hotel and draws visitors. Kesar Bagh is a luxury option there. Chanoud Garh is another 300 year-old fort-palace turned exquisite heritage hotel in the Pali district. However, it doesn't get anymore out-of-this-world than stunning Lakshman Sagar heritage hotel. Alternatively, Culture Aangan has homestays in Pali. You'll find village life to be fascinating. You can even attend a shepherds' morning opium meet!

Although increasingly popular with travelers, Bundi also often gets overlooked as a tourist destination in Rajasthan due to its off-the-beaten path location between Jaipur and Udaipur. It's a captivating place to visit, with its lakes, temples, markets, miniature paintings, and blue houses similar to Jodhpur. This relatively laid-back town is dominated by the extraordinary and imposing Bundi Palace, which protrudes out of the hillside. The ancient, winding lanes of the Old City are fascinating to wander through. Bundi also has around 50 step wells and a ramshackle fort above the palace.

Kota and Chambal

Less than an hour southeast of Bundi, Rajasthan's third largest city -- Kota -- sits alongside the Chambal River. Once you've seen its palaces, temples and museums head out to explore the National Chambal Sanctuary and take a boat ride along the river. It's home to rare wildlife such as the gharial (a long-snouted, fish-eating crocodile) and Gangetic river dolphin. Bhainsrorgarh Fort boutique heritage hotel was once a royal abode and has an enviable position atop the cliff. The view is breathtaking! Plus, the 9th century Badoli Temples are nearby. Kota is famous for its Dussehra festival and fair in October.

Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park is one of the best places in India to spot a tiger in the wild. In contrast to many national parks in India, Ranthambore is also really accessible and easy to get to. This makes it very popular (and, unfortunately, it's been facing a lot of tourist pressure). As well as nature, the park is home to the formidable 10th century Ranthambore Fort. It's a huge structure that contains ruined pavilions, monuments, and three Hindu temples. The park is packed with history, having witnessed many battles played out on its land, and the rise and fall of many rulers.

If driving from Agra (or Bharatpur) to Ranthambore, consider stopping at Karauli and staying at isolated Ramathra Fort heritage hotel on the way.

Birding enthusiasts will be delighted by Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur, just over an hour east of Agra on the way to Jaipur. One of India's top bird sanctuaries for bird watching and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was formerly a duck hunting reserve of the maharajas. More than 370 species of birds can be found there, including a large congregation of non-migratory resident breeding birds.

Also on the Agra-Jaipur Road, Abhaneri has the deepest and possibly the most photographed step well in India . Chand Baori was built between the 8th and 9th centuries by King Chanda of the Nikumbh dynasty of Rajputs. However, locals will tell you a more spookier story of it being constructed in one night by ghosts! The step well extends approximately 100 feet into the ground, down 3,500 steps and 13 levels. A two-day Abhaneri festival takes place every year in September against the evocative backdrop of Chand Baori to promote rural tourism.

Interested in more forts and palaces? Alwar can be done on a day trip from Delhi , as it's only three hours south of India's capital. Attractions include an 18th century City Palace complex and government museum (closed Mondays) inside it, which showcases the extravagant lifestyle of the kings. However, it's Lake Sagar and the many chhatris (dome-shaped pavilions) behind the City Palace that are most visually impressive monuments. Above the City Palace sits 16th century Bala Quila, notable for being one of a few forts in Rajasthan to be built before the rise of the Mughals.

Another popular sidetrip from Delhi, Neemrana was the third capital of the descendants of Prithviraj Chauhan III, king of the Rajput Chauhan dynasty. It's located in Rajasthan's Aravalli Hills, about two and a half hours southwest of Delhi on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway. The main attractions there are rambling 15th century Neemrana Fort Palace hotel perched on the side of the hill overlooking town, and zip-lining .

Mount Abu is the only hill station in Rajasthan. It's situated 4,000 feet (1,220 meters) above sea level near the Gujarat border, about three hours (160km) from Udaipur. The British took a liking to Mount Abu because of its comfortable climate, and they relocated the headquarters of their political Rajputana Agency there from Ajmer in 1857. Mount Abu has a reputation as a honeymooner's haven but Indian families flock to the area as well. However, it remains an offbeat destination for foreigners. These top things to do in Mount Abu are centered around enjoying the great outdoors.

Perfect Rajasthan Itinerary for 7 Days (What I Did)

India is blossoming into one of the most important countries in the world, and it is filled with incredible places to visit. While we enjoyed visiting the Taj Mahal and Delhi, Rajasthan was the true highlight of our trip. This post will lay out the perfect Rajasthan itinerary for 7 days of travel, created out of weeks of research out outreach before we visited.

Many visitors head to the capital of New Delhi or to southern hubs like Mumbai and Goa, but Rajasthan is a special place that you won’t want to miss. On our most recent trip to India, we spent a week in New Delhi and Agra and another week traveling through Rajasthan. Rajasthan travel can be either glamorous or stressful depending on how you plan your trip, and we hope these tips help you plan a great trip.

Full disclosure: I’m not selling any tours in this post. I find that so many blog posts about India are stuffed with sales pitches and tour provider plugs. This post will contain none of that, and I am not partnering with anyone to provide this information.

Where Is Rajasthan?

Rajasthan is a state in northwestern India. It shares a border with Pakistan on its northwestern edge. It is several hundred miles to the west of Delhi.

Rajasthan is known mostly for its deserts. The Great Indian Desert, or Thar Desert, covers most of Rajasthan’s surface. The people outside of the major cities are mostly part of nomadic tribes and laborers who have been in this area for hundreds of years. 

Most Popular Places to Visit in Rajasthan

While there is more to Rajasthan than just major cities, they serve as the best waypoints on any trip through the state. Rajasthan is massive, and getting from one city to another usually takes at least four hours by car and can be as much as twelve hours, depending on where you go. 

There are five cities that most visitors flock to: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, and Bikaner.

Jaipur is the biggest city in Rajasthan and it is the most commonly visited one, too. Known as the Pink City, Jaipur is the closest to Delhi and sits at the east end of Rajasthan. The city got its name when all of its buildings were painted pink to honor the British Queen Victoria. 

Nowadays, the city is known for its opulent palaces, wildlife sanctuaries, forts, and temples. The most notable palace is the pink sandstone Hawa Mahal. This massive palace along with the famous Amber Fort draws crowds from all over!

Jaipur forms the eastern point of the Golden Triangle of Rajasthan. This is a nickname for the three most culturally significant cities in Rajasthan.

One major reason to visit Jaipur is to stay in one of the city’s luxurious boutique hotels. Since Jaipur is the biggest city in Rajasthan, it is also among the most accessible. While many parts of Jaipur are inaccessible in their own right, these hotels feel like the homes of royalty.

Jaipur Airport is the largest airport in Rajasthan, which is another reason this city is so popular to visit. It makes for the perfect gateway to Rajasthan for international tourists.

Jodhpur is Rajasthan’s blue city, and it is located on the edge of the Thar desert. Known for its Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur is a great place to visit on a Rajasthan trip. It is the second-largest city in Rajasthan, and its history is as rich as anywhere else in the state.

The old city is known for its clock tower and Jaswant Thada, as well as its rooftop restaurants. Jodhpur is the closest Rajasthani city to Jaipur, which is why many visitors choose these two cities to see on their Rajasthan tour itinerary.

For a 7 day Rajasthan itinerary, Jodhpur can be the perfect stop between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.

Jaisalmer is the most remote of any city on this list. It practically hugs the Pakistan border in northwest India. While most of Rajasthan is in the desert, Jaisalmer is known as the true desert city.

The Jaisalmer Fort, or Sonar Qila, is the city’s focal point. Located in the heart of the city, this is a living, breathing, majestic fort with thousands of actual residents. If you want to visit a local market or soak in the desert views, this is the place to go.

Jaisalmer forms the western point of the Golden Triangle of Rajasthan, and is actually known as the Golden City. If you want to do desert activities, like a camel safari or a picnic in the sand dunes, Jaisalmer is absolutely the place to go. Jaisalmer is especially famous for its luxury desert camping resorts.

Getting to Jaisalmer can be a pain, and that is the biggest hurdle to visiting. It is hundreds of miles away from the other major Rajasthani cities. It does have its own airport and railway station, but both are small and not very useful.

Known as both the City of Lakes and the White City, Udaipur is a special place located in southern Rajasthan. Sitting on the manmade Lake Pichola, this city is loaded with stunning temples and forts. It forms the southern point of the Golden Triangle of Rajasthan.

The most famous place to visit in Udaipur is the City Palace, which is a massive and beautiful palace museum located in the old city. The Monsoon Temple, or Nahargarh Fort, is another stunning highlight high in the mountains with stunning views. The Jagdish Temple is another place you won’t want to miss.

Udaipur felt worlds different from the other places we visited in India. To us, it was very refreshing. We enjoyed many dinners at rooftop restaurants, visited striking palaces and temples, and stayed in a luscious white marble palace.

While Jaisalmer is the desert city, Bikaner is actually the best city to visit for camel rides! Bikaner is famous for its camel breeding, and this lures thousands of visitors each year. It is located in the northern part of Rajasthan, not too far from the Pakistan border.

One of the biggest reasons to visit Bikaner is that it is less popular with tourists. The city has plenty of charm, but it doesn’t see nearly the crowds that Jaipur and Jodhpur see. This makes for relaxing desert safaris, a hassle-free camel ride, and an intimate opportunity to learn about the area’s rich history and culture.

Bikaner is very far from some of the other cities on this list, which is one of the main reasons it tends to get excluded from the typical 7 day Rajasthan itinerary.

Where Should You Visit in Rajasthan?

Rajasthan is one of the most-visited states in all of India. Many of its cities are ranked among the best places to visit in all of India, which is a massive country! 

We spent weeks figuring out where we wanted to go. The palaces of Jaipur, deserts of Jaisalmer, lakes of Udaipur, and temples of Jodhpur all called to us in different ways. Ultimately, after talking with friends of ours who live in India, we decided to spend our days in just Jaisalmer and Udaipur, and we did not regret that decision one bit.

Since places in the state are so far apart, you need to budget travel time into any 7 Day Rajasthan itinerary. We decided to allocate three days to Jaisalmer, three days to Udaipur, and one day to travel between them. This would have been the perfect amount of time if it weren’t for some hiccups we encountered.

If we had more time, we absolutely would have added Jaipur or Jodhpur to our itinerary. But with only 7 days, we figured it was better to see two places well rather than four places for just a day each.

How Do You Get Around Rajasthan?

Rajasthan is absolutely massive, and there isn’t great public transportation between the major cities. While there are railways and airports connecting many of these cities, actual train and flight routes are very limited.

As intimidating as it may seem, the best way to get around Jaisalmer is by hired car or van.

We initially booked flights to get from Jaisalmer to Udaipur. There was going to be a layover in Delhi. Our flight departing from Jaisalmer was delayed two full days, and our original flight arriving in Jaisalmer was delayed a full day too.

This was after the pandemic, so that isn’t even an excuse. Talking to friends, I discovered it is very common for Jaisalmer’s airport, as well as other Rajasthani airports, to be abruptly shut down for military reasons.

This can put a damper on any Rajasthan itinerary for 7 days.

We were stranded in Jaisalmer with no flights or trains heading out any time soon. We asked our hotel for a reputable transfer service, and booked a driver all the way to Udaipur. The driver picked us up at 4am and drove us happily 11 hours to Udaipur.

Driving in Rajasthan

Some people opt to rent their own car while in Rajasthan. I have mixed opinions about this. The traffic outside of major cities is not bad and driving would be pretty easy on the highways.

But once you get off the highways, I think it is a whole different story. The roads through the small towns are prone to traffic jams, and it is very easy to lose cell phone service out in the rural parts of Rajasthan. We lost service at many points along our trip.

I would not recommend renting a car, simply because a hired driver is very affordable and is accustomed to driving in the area. Our 11-hour drive for 5 people from Jaisalmer to Udaipur, in a private, new, air-conditioned van, cost just $211.

Driver Recommendation for Rajasthan

We booked our ride with Lucky Tours and Travel. This is an agency that operates all throughout Rajasthan. The company charged us just $211 for a comfortable 11 hour drive from Jaisalmer to Udaipur.

You can either contact them via their website or on Whatsapp at +919414141491. We had a perfectly fine ride with them and I’d use them again if I returned. I get no commission from you booking with them.

Is Rajasthan Safe to Visit?

All in all, Rajasthan is a very safe place to visit in India. Like anywhere, there is a risk of pickpocketing and scamming. However, this is not very common, especially if you take common precautions.

We never felt threatened while in Rajasthan.

Jaisalmer is a bit seedier than Udaipur, but we felt safe in both cities. We also felt perfectly safe traveling through the countryside from Jaisalmer to Udaipur.

To be fair, I would not have felt safe driving a rental car through some of the towns that we drove through. I felt much more comfortable having an Indian person at the wheel, as the roads were narrow and we passed through a lot of very impoverished areas.

For reference, our group included three women, one man, and one toddler. We never felt like targets, nor did we get taken advantage of despite clearly being foreigners. Compared to other places in India, Rajasthan is very safe and can be enjoyed without too many worries.

Full 7 Day Rajasthan Itinerary: Everything to Know

Day 1: Arriving in Jaisalmer

Recommended Hotel: The Kafila Desert Camp

Jaisalmer is very small and there are very few flights into and out of the city’s airport. Your best bet is to arrive into Delhi a day before and take the earliest possible flight from Delhi to Jaisalmer. From the Jaisalmer airport, I recommend taking a pre-booked taxi to your accommodation.

I think the best way to start your Rajasthan trip is by heading straight to a luxury desert camping resort. There are a lot of these, and many have good reputations. I had a hard time finding trustworthy reviews online, and ultimately chose The Kafila Desert Camp.

It was the perfect choice, and I detailed my full experience at the Kafila Desert Camp in another blog post. Check that out if you are considering going!

I recommend at least two full days, if not more, at the camp. Since the airline delayed our flight by over 24 hours, we had very limited time here. Still, we had a delicious candlelit dinner, went stargazing in the sand dunes, rode camels and horses, and more.

Day 2: Enjoying the Thar Desert at a Luxury Desert Camp

This is the perfect time to explore and soak in what the desert has to offer. In my opinion, the desert is a much better attraction that the city of Jaisalmer itself. Visit a local village, ride camels, enjoy cultural performances, eat breakfast on the sand dunes, and do whatever else your resort offers! If time permits, I recommend taking advantage of every amenity that your camp offers, as they are normally free of charge.

Day 3: Explore Bada Bagh and Jaisalmer City

Recommended Hotel: Jaisalmer Marriott Resort and Spa

On this morning, I recommend packing up your things and heading to another hotel located closer to the city. On your way to Jaisalmer, stop at Bada Bagh, which is a complex of stunning cenotaph ruins located to the west of the city. 

After this visit, head to the Jaisalmer Fort, which is the main highlight of Jaisalmer City. Thousands of people inhabit the fort to this day, and it has plenty of restaurants, stores, markets, temples, hotels, and more to explore. Once you’ve had your fill exploring the Fort, head to your hotel and rest up for the long travel day.

Day 4: Transit from Jaisalmer to Udaipur

Recommended Hotel: Aurika Udaipur

I recommend booking a private car or van to take you from Jaisalmer to Udaipur. I recommend an early start, as the trip takes 10-12 hours by car and goes through many small towns along the way. Pack food, because there are not many places to stop along the way.

If you have extra time, this is the spot in the itinerary where you could add days to visit Jodhpur. Jodhpur is only a short drive out of the way, and it makes for the perfect waypoint. However, if you are creating a 7 day Rajasthan itinerary, I advise skipping Jodhpur and heading straight to Udaipur.

Once you get to Udaipur in late afternoon, check in and grab a bite to eat at Atari restaurant.

Day 5: Explore Old Udaipur and the City Palace

Recommended Udaipur Hotel: Aurika Udaipur

On your first full day in Udaipur, you’ll want to explore the highlights of the old city. Most notably, this includes the Jagdish Temple, the City Palace. The City Palace can take several hours to get through, as it is massive and filled with things to see.

After exploring the old town, I’d recommend getting dinner at Rainbow Restaurant for great views of the lake. The food is good and the prices are very affordable.

After this, return to your hotel and enjoy any amenities it offers.

Once again, we highly recommend Aurika Udaipur as your hotel of choice. It’s safe, luxurious, and the breakfast buffet was the best we had in all of India.

Day 6: Visit the Monsoon Temple and Take a Sunset Cruise on Lake Pichola

I recommend starting your day out with a luxurious lunch at the restaurant at Udaivillas. This place books up sometimes weeks in advance but is delicious and very elegant. It’s pricey, but its an experience you’ll want to have.

Once you’ve finished, head to the foot of the Monsoon Temple. The Monsoon Temple was our favorite part about Udaipur, but visiting it can be a real trek. 

The temple is located on top of a tall mountain, and you need to hire an official driver to take you up the windy roads to the top. It feels incredibly dangerous, but it wound up being fine.

Once at the top, the views are incredible. You can see for miles in every direction, including over the downtown parts of Udaipur. The palace itself is nothing compared to the City Palace, but the views are worth the trip.

Once you get back down, I recommend heading to the port where boats leave for sunset cruises. This is close to the Rainbow Restaurant. The boat ride is stunning and relaxing and very affordable.

Day 7: Check Out of Hotel, Fly Home

On your last day, you’ll want to leave ample time to check out of your hotel and get to the airport. Udaipur’s airport is located roughly 40-50 minutes outside of the city, and traffic can make the time go way up. 

Checking out of your hotel can also take some time, as the nice resorts tend to operate a bit more slowly. The Udaipur airport has virtually no amenities, so you’ll want to leave enough time to get there, but not too much time to where you’re sitting in a drab airport for hours.

Tips for a Longer Than 7 Day Rajasthan Itinerary

The plan I outlined above is the perfect 7 day Rajasthan itinerary, in my opinion, because it visits two of the most unique cities in Rajasthan. Not only are Jaisalmer and Udaipur unique from the rest of the state, they’re also very different from one another.

If you have more time than just a week, I recommend adding Jodhpur as a stop. As I said in the 7 day Rajasthan itinerary above, Jodhpur is the perfect halfway point between Jaisalmer and Udaipur.

If you have enough time to create a Rajasthan tour itinerary of two weeks or more, I advise ending your trip in Jaipur, which has a major international airport and is the biggest and busiest city in Rajasthan.

15. Vrindavan

Vridavan is another accessible weekend getaway from Delhi within 200 km. rindavan is also known as the Land of Temples, because it has more than 5000 temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and his consort Radha, the divine couple of love and devotion. Hindu mythology says Lord Krishna resides eternally in Vrindavan and never leaves the abode and pilgrims from across the world reach Vrindavan throughout the year. If you want to go temple hopping, make sure you visit Madan-Mohan, Radha Vallabh as well as Banke-Bihari and Shahji.

Best things to do : Like Mathura, Vrindavan is also a holy town and one can embark on a temple trail here. Perhaps, Vrindavan and Mathura can be clubbed together

Best Time of Year to Travel to Rajasthan

Rajasthan has a wide range of landscapes, but for the most part, the state experiences an extremely arid climate, with dusty deserts and scorching weather, punctuated here and there by cooler highlands and the odd jungle-like region.

The weather in Rajasthan then can be harsh, with long, hot summers that bring high temperatures. Rainfall is limited through the year, but when it does rain, it rains hard, with seasonal monsoons sweeping across the state.

The best time of year to visit Rajasthan is the cool dry season, which falls through winter. From November through to March you have optimum temperatures averaging around 20 degrees Celsius (~68 degrees Fahrenheit).

Temperatures in summer, particularly between April and June, can frequently exceed 40 degrees Celsius (~104 degrees Fahrenheit), while July through to October is when the worst of the monsoon rainfall occurs, and the weather can be both hot and humid.

The winter dry season, while having the best weather for traveling, is also the busiest time of year to be in Rajasthan, when attractions are packed out and transport and accommodation can be booked well in advance.

If you are looking for a quieter time of year, then consider traveling in the shoulder seasons, at the start of summer, or just after the rains.

Mount Abu is a hill station that offers exceptional views of the surrounding area. A rocky plateau of a summit means that there is a large space to explore, not to mention an abundance of attractions. Nakki Lake is a must-see spot near Mount Abu, and you can even rent an affordable paddle boat to get on the water and admire the hills surrounding the lake. Also of interest in Mount Abu will be the Dilwara Temples. These temples from the Jain religion date from about the 12th century and are carved from an exquisite white marble.

Also make time for Rana Kumbha’s Palace, the oldest part of the fort, and the Meera Temple, which honors Vishnu and boasts a large collection of idols.

This national park is also a wildlife sanctuary, and it is known as one of the top spots in the entire world to see tigers in the wild. A smaller, open-top vehicle called a gypsy is best for the braver visitors, and the larger open-top vehicles called canters offer a little more protection. In addition to the tigers, Ranthambhore National Park boasts wildlife that includes leopards, hyenas, sloth bears and so much more. On a safari, you will also have the chance to see Ranthambhore Fort, which dates back to the 10th century.

The city of Bundi is a unique destination, and it is a place that is widely known for its step wells. While this means of water collection is no longer used in the city, Bundi still has more than 50 step wells that you can see. The most famous is the Queen’s Step Well, which dates back to the 15th century and boasts more than 200 steps. Also of note in Bundi is the Taragarh Fort, constructed in the 16th century and now home to a staggering art collection. Escape the urban environment easily at one of the lakes surrounding Bundi, or set off on a wildlife safari at Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary.

Pushkar is a holy city, and it is known best for its Brahma temple and its annual camel fair. Brahma is one-third of the holy trinity in Hindu religion, and Pushkar is said to be the home of Brahma. Also known as the Golden City, Jaisalmer is a remarkable city right on the fringes of the Thar Desert. The dominating features of Jaisalmer is the Jaisalmer Fort, or Sonar Qila, which is still an inhabited space. Unlike virtually every other fort in India, Jaisalmer is completely functioning, and within the fort you’ll find private residences, shops and even restaurants. Souvenir shopping within the fort is a fun experience, with common souvenirs including bronze statues and silver jewelry. Within the fort’s walls, there are also a handful of temples. These Jain temples date back to the 12th century, and most are open to the public in the morning.

You could do a mixture of car and train. Take the overnight train to Udaipur and rent a car from there.

From Delhi to Udaipur, here are the five Rajasthan cities I think you should visit in India

Every single city in India is magnificent, so believe me when I say it was hard to narrow it down to just five.

As a child, I was fascinated by Bollywood movies full of colour and passion, thanks to a best friend’s love of the genre (and my love for all things drama). As a teenager, getting a rich, tomato-y butter chicken with (extra) garlic naan was always my go-to takeaway. Now, as an adult, I can’t get over the transcendent story of love behind the creation of the Taj Mahal – spoiler alert, I still can’t. So, when deciding which country to visit on my annual trip, India was a no-brainer.

India has been on my must-visit list for a while, however, the thought of travelling there was a little overwhelming. I wanted to go, but I didn’t really know how. Could I brave the language barrier and cultural differences and explore the country on my own? Or would I need a local guide to show me where to buy the creamiest lassi and how to avoid getting kicked by a curb-side cow?

I went with the latter on Intrepid’s 15-day Rajasthan Experience tour. It was still overwhelming, but these five cities made me appreciate this kaleidoscopic country in a whole different way and if it were up to me (it’s clearly not), no one would travel to India without visiting them.

*Disclaimer, I know not all of the cities I’ve listed are technically in the state of Rajasthan, but we still visited them as part of the Rajasthan Experience tour, so I’ve included them in this blog anyway.

You can read all the travel guides and do hours of research, but nothing prepares you for the sensory overload of Delhi. Home to nearly 33 million people, this city pulsates all around you with sights, tastebud-tingling smells and noises so loud and constant that you start to wonder whether you’ll ever experience peace and quiet again.

Delhi was the meeting point for the start of the adventure, so there were no tour activities included, but I had some time to explore the city before the welcome meeting. Now Delhi is etched in my mind as the place where I dived into India’s culture, headfirst.

From the marble domes and towering minarets of Jama Masjid to the frenzied Khari Baoli market street where turmeric, cumin and powdered red chilli rub shoulders with cashews and peanuts in bags by the kilo, it was the perfect place to get my feet wet – literally. A few Hindu temples in Delhi required us to remove our shoes and place our feet in a trough full of marigold-infused water as a sign of respect, cleanliness and humility before we could enter.

We only spent one night in Delhi, but that was all it took to get me excited. Yes, I was still feeling apprehensive, but my nervousness was slowly and surely being replaced by anticipation of the coming adventure.

After a brief, air-conditioned train ride (that’s important when temperatures of 35˚C+ are expected), we arrived in Agra. I was ready to do some hardcore sightseeing. By that, I mean I wanted our leader to point me toward the Taj Mahal the second we stepped out of the station. Before he could make my bucket-list dreams come true however, we had a fort to visit – Agra Fort.

The Agra Fort, an icon in its own right, can often be overlooked for the famous Taj Mahal nearby. It was originally built out of vivid red sandstone by Emperor Akbar as a military structure in 1565, but in my eyes, this grand majestic building could easily have passed for a palace. It was that striking. The rich red colour of the sandstone, paired with the Mughal architecture that was common during the era, blew my sweat-soaked sandals off. I did warn you about the heat.

And from its ramparts, I caught my very first glimpse of the Taj Mahal (there may or may not have been some anticipatory squealing).

The Taj Mahal was everything I expected it to be. I knew Emperor Shah Jahan had built it in loving memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, but I didn’t realise you’d be able to sense that same love coursing through the structure’s white marble and providing life to the grounds’ lush greenery.

I know it sounds corny and cliché, but when I entered this sacred complex, a certain peace came over me. Like nothing bad could, or would, ever happen here. There might’ve been a couple hundred people walking around, but it was so quiet. Almost as if everyone there recognised they were in the presence of a greater devotion – one that time had stood still for. To put it mildly, I was in complete awe. I ended the day feeling grateful that Emperor Jahan was thoughtful enough to share his love in a way we could all feel 391 years later.

Jaipur was next, and I was excited to leave the reds and whites behind for hues of pink. Before you ask, no, Jaipur’s not going through a Barbie phase (although who could blame it if it was). The city was painted pink in 1876 in preparation for a visit from Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII.

Fast forward around 150 years and this friendly city continues to honour its pink heritage by incorporating pink materials in new construction.

We started our day with a (pink) bang at Hawa Mahal, constructed in 1799.

Shaped like a perfectly preserved honeycomb, this beautiful palace was once home to female royal family members so they could observe the happenings in the street below without being seen themselves. It was originally made with pink sandstone and then pink-washed before Prince Albert’s visit as a sign of Jaipur’s hospitality. With intricate details that combine aspects of both the Hindu Rajput and Islamic Mughal design styles, it’s easy to see how it’s fit for a queen (bee).

Coloured architecture isn’t the only thing that makes this city unique. From taking a ride with an all-female powered rickshaw company in search of street snacks to watching a Bollywood heartthrob defeat the bad guys in one of Jaipur’s oldest cinemas (my inner child was screaming), you’ll never get bored exploring the city’s fascinating culture and heritage. I certainly didn’t.

Next up on Rajasthan’s city colour wheel is Jaisalmer, or as it’s more affectionately known, the Golden City. I didn’t have any expectations of Jaisalmer. I’d never heard of it before travelling to India and if I’m being honest, I wasn’t all that excited for a two-night stop here. 

As we drove along the dusty, desert road that would deliver us straight into the city’s heart, listening to our leader talk about Jaisalmer’s hilltop fort, snaking alleyways and intricately designed houses, my interest was piqued.

Like a lot of cities in Rajasthan, Jaisalmer has its own fort. While most forts have been turned into museums and listed as World Heritage sites, Jaisalmer’s stronghold stands out as the largest out of the few living forts left in the world. Around 3,000 people still live within the fort’s walls much like they would’ve back when it was built out of yellow sandstone in 1156.

Making space for wandering dogs and cows rummaging for food, our local leader led us through the fort’s maze of temples, boutique shops, old havelis and traditional hotels. When the heat became a little too much, we stopped at a café, cracked open a cold can of Sprite and admired the spectacular views across the whole city. Talk about a pinch-me moment.

While the fort may have been the star jewel in Jaisalmer’s crown, there were plenty of other places to explore. We visited the city’s garment district with its rich colours and textured fabrics and we enjoyed moments by Gardisar Lake, where a calm surface reflects the temples and shrines along the water’s edge.

Picking my favourite city in Rajasthan is like loving one pet more than the other or choosing between tikka masala or lamb vindaloo for dinner. But if I had to pick one, it would be Udaipur (and tikka masala). If you’re also wondering whether it has its own colour, it does. Udaipur is known as the White City thanks to its pristinely preserved marble palaces.

The whole city is simply remarkable and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t take my breath away, but that also could’ve been the heat that hit me when I stepped off the bus (do you see a pattern here?). From laneways lined with stores selling aged leather and coffee shops where I easily could spend hours to the homemade lunch we had with a local family and the royal treasures and ancient murals of the City Palace, Udaipur is magical.

On our second last night as a group, our leader recommended a family-run rooftop restaurant on Lake Pichola’s edge. We got to the restaurant, took the rickety lift to the seventh floor and stepped out to see the prettiest sunset. Flush with reds, oranges, pinks and purples, the sky looked magnificent and was nature’s send-off to an unforgettable two weeks in India.

We drank, laughed and ate way too much spicy food as we all reflected on our favourite parts of the trip. As we exchanged numbers for a WhatsApp group we named Rajasthan Revellers, I knew we were leaving India with countless memories, about 1,278 photos and nine new friends.

We visited more destinations than I’ve shared, but these cities left an India-shaped mark on my heart. Yes, the journey was long at times (those eight-hour bus drives really called out the snorers in the group) and yes, it was too hot to function properly most days, but my god was it worth it.

Rajasthan is possibly the most daunting, astounding and unbelievable destination I’ve ever been to and while it didn’t get any less overwhelming the more we saw, I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Rajasthan Road Trip From Delhi : Ultimate 10 Day Itinerary

Rajasthan- the land of kings, proudly boasts the rich heritage and architecture of India . The colorful streets, charming villages and majestic forts are the highlights of this culturally vibrant state. It is the largest state in India and it is almost impossible to explore it in one go. In December 2020, we visited the western part of Rajasthan which attracts visitors from all over the world for its golden sands of the Thar desert. If you’re planning to witness it in 2021, here’s my Rajasthan road trip itinerary from Delhi to get you started.

You might find a lot of itineraries online for Rajasthan road trip from Delhi, that cover a lot more places like Pushkar, Ajmer and Udaipur. We deliberately restricted our trip to- Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Jaipur given the long distances we needed to cover, driving ourselves. This also helped us spend more time in the cities and also get adequate rest. Driving for so long can be exhausting, and I would highly recommend taking restful stops and refrain from covering more places in a short period of time.

Route map : Rajasthan road trip from Delhi

Delhi —-> Bikaner —-> Jaisalmer —-> Jodhpur —-> Jaipur —-> Delhi

Total Distance- 1675 KMs

Day 1 | Drive from Delhi to Bikaner

This was our longest drive in a single day (420 kms) and took us 8 hours to reach Bikaner. This route crosses the entire breadth of Haryana by-passing Rohtak and Bhiwani towns and entering Rajasthan through National Highway (NH-11) . Be ready for a bumpy ride as the internal roads in Haryana are pretty narrow and you will mostly encounter a number of slow moving trucks and large vehicles. Once you cross the border through to Rajasthan, the route gets a lot smoother and you can enjoy the drive. As you head closer to the desert region, the vehicles nearly disappear and suddenly you find yourself driving all alone in the ochre landscape with little to no trees around. Welcome to the desert!

If you leave Delhi by 6 am, you will reach Bikaner by 2 to 3 PM. Rest the entire day after the really long drive. 

Tip: You wouldn’t find restaurants or dhabas on your way, especially once you enter Rajasthan. So do not miss packing enough food and water for your journey. Dress in layers as it gets hotter in the day and colder during the night.

Day 2 | Explore Bikaner

Next stop at the Rampuria haveli , a group of seven grand havelis from the 15th century. Every inch of the facade is covered with immaculate stone carvings and breath-taking glass work. 

Stop for lunch and leave for Jaisalmer which is another 330 kms from Bikaner. We left at around 2 PM and reached by 7 PM, checked-in at our hotel and retired for the night.

Day 3 | Explore Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer looks like an ancient town encircling the stunning Jaisalmer fort. All structures in the city, be it the latest hotels, buildings or any monument, are designed artistically with yellow sandstone giving them a palace like look.

The Jaisalmer fort is perched high above the desert plains and is a UNESCO world heritage site. If you’re in Jaisalmer, you cannot miss this living fort which is home to almost 3000 people. Yes, a city within a city. We came across shops, temples and crisscrossed lanes with people living in their old honeycombed houses. You can get a great panoramic view of the entire city from the fort cafes. The alleys are full of shops & colorful textiles and the restaurants serve excellent local dishes. 

Maharawal’s Palace is a prominent tourist spot inside the fort. It’s a beautiful carved palace depicting an insight into the history and heritage of Jaisalmer. When we visited the fort it was shut due to the sad demise of the king of Jaisalmer. 

Other popular tourist spots include- the Lakshminath Temple (a group of 7 Jain temples built of golden sandstone) and numerous havelis inside the fort.

Unfortunately, Bada bagh was closed during our visit as few staff members tested positive for Covid.

Day 4 | Desert safari

The highlight of our Rajasthan road trip from Delhi- spending the night in the roaring sands of the Thar desert. Many hotels and agencies in Jaisalmer offer desert safari services in groups of 25- 30 people. We booked ours through Moustache hostels.

We left Jaisalmer post lunch on a jeep along with the rest of the group and reached our first stop- Kuldhara village . Kuldhara is an abandoned village and according to legends, it was cursed in the 1800s. To this day, Kuldhara is considered haunted and locals claim to hear the voices of dead villagers among the ruins.

We then commenced our journey towards the desert, with the road running through the vast wasteland with clumps of desert shrubs and wind farms. We arrived on time to watch the Sun slip beneath the golden horizon while enjoying the warmth of chai and pakoras. I don’t remember the last time I stood still to watch a sunset like this without any distraction, the vast desert made it look heavenly.

We camped at the desert and enjoyed the bonfire with the rest of the group. Mobile networks don’t work at the desert safari, so it’s actually a great time to get that digital detox. Even though sleeping under the stars sounds fun, it became a nightmare when the desert turned freezing cold at night. We were staying in mobile tents which had mattresses on the floor and the blankets weren’t warm enough for the freezing night. As much fun as it looks, camping in the desert is not everyone’s cup of tea.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and comfortable experience at the desert, I would recommend going for Sam Sand Dunes or any bigger resort in town to get access to proper washrooms and comfortable beds inside the tents.

Day 5 | Leave for Jodhpur

Next morning, we had tea and breakfast at the camp and left for the city. We freshened up at Moustache hostel, ate our lunch and then left for Jodhpur. 

The drive to Jodhpur was pretty smooth and took us approx 4.5 hours (280 kms) to reach our hotel. We were pretty exhausted after the desert safari and the long drive, so we decided to call it a day. 

If you’re all charged up and in the mood to explore, you may head out to explore the old city. With its narrow lanes, chai and pakora stalls and the famed blue walled houses, the chaos and the charm of the old city is hard to ignore. Head over to Sadar market near the clock tower for some shopping and amazing food. Also, do not miss out pyaaz ki kachori and mirchi bada at Janta sweet house in Sadar market. You can also get namkeens and Gajak packed for your folks from here. It is one of the oldest and most popular shops in town. 

Just to mention, driving and finding parking in the old city is very challenging due to the narrow alleys. Please take an Uber or a local rickshaw to reach here.

Day 6 | Mehrangarh Fort & Jaswant Thada

The magnificent Mehrangarh Fort looms above the city and is one of the largest forts in Rajasthan. It’s impossible to not be awed by the grandeur of Mehrangarh fort which dominates the skyline of Jodhpur. The entry costs about INR 150 (for Indian visitors) & INR 600 (for International visitors) and you can hire a guide as well. The museums and galleries are some of the most well preserved in the country. We were greeted with Rajasthani folk artists at the entrance, singing the songs of the land. The Sheesh mahal, phool mahal and the moti mahal are some wonders of the fort with intricate jaali work, jharokhas, colourful mirrors and beautiful glass work, some typical characteristics of Rajputana architecture. You can get the most epic view of the blue city from Mehrangarh fort.

We then marched towards Jaswant Thada, which is at a walking distance from the fort. A white marble cenotaph built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, also called the Taj Mahal of Rajasthan. Apart from the marble structure, it also houses a beautiful garden where you can simply sit back and relax.

Day 7 | Mandore garden

We celebrated the new year in Jodhpur itself. We visited Umaid Bhavan palace and explored the cafes in Jodhpur in the afternoon and Mandore garden in the evening. Mandore garden is on the outskirts of the main city but I bet it has the most astonishing stone work, artistic cenotaphs and beautiful ruins I have ever come across. Also, the garden and the monuments are very well maintained by the authorities and definitely worth a visit.

Day 8 | Leave for Jaipur

We checked out from our hotel post breakfast and left for Jaipur. The early you leave the better it is as it’s going to be a long 350km drive and will take almost 6 hours. 

We checked-in at the hotel and took an uber to head to the old city for our evening tea. Like Jodhpur, the old city of Jaipur is very congested and one should avoid driving here by themselves. We took an Uber which dropped us near the old city from where we walked around to explore the market. Since we’ve been to Jaipur in the past, we didn’t spend an extra day here but if that’s not the case with you, then you need to spend at least two days here because it’s the administrative capital of Rajasthan. As I mentioned earlier, Rajasthan is huge and it’s not possible to cover everything in one go. I tried my best to share my experience of visiting the western parts of the state. Hope my Rajasthan road trip itinerary from Delhi motivated you to visit this colourful state and explore the best of it in 2021.

It never ceases to amaze me how huge India is. I’ve had that thought in the back of my mind while I read the whole post, after seeing that almost two thousand km get you to see a small fraction of the country. But what a beautiful fraction! I love all your stops! This is a fantastic itinerary!

It goes to show how uninformed I am about India, but this is the first time that I have seen a roadtrip itinerary! I love roadtrips as they are my preferred way to explore. Different travel routes for Rajasthan – Delhi – Agra

Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan are probably the most visited places in India by foreign tourists. The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur being the most popular of those. But Rajasthan as a state is quite varied and diverse, it is not all about Forts and Palaces. You have a tiger safari in Ranthambore, the desert in Jaisalmer and Bikaner, small rural villages, and the spiritual town of Pushkar. Combine this with great food and some lovely charming boutique hotels and homestays and you can easily spend 2 weeks in this region.

With this blog we have given a few options of different travel routes to Rajasthan you may take depending on your interests and number of days you have to travel. If you do need help in planning your time through Rajasthan and other regions, we can help you customize your trip to India.

Route 1 – Golden Triangle plus one more city (7-8 days)

We believe the Golden Triangle i.e. Delhi – Agra – Jaipur, by itself is slightly overrated and touristy as a travel route. Delhi and Jaipur are bustling cities that offer a combination of monuments, markets and diverse places to eat. However, they do not offer much time for relaxation. Agra, solely in terms of a city, is fairly disappointing. However, the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort and other monuments are breathtaking and make a trip to Agra worthwhile. But whilst saying this, combine these cities with offbeat homestays, interesting activities and you can have a completely different experience. So if you do only have 5-6 days in India, we could still help you plan it differently.

If you have a little more than a week to spare for your holiday, you can easily add one more city apart from Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

One of the following options is possible to include in a weeklong Golden Triangle trip to India.

Delhi – Agra – Ranthambore – Jaipur – Delhi

If you love the forests you can include a stop at Ranthambore National Park. Using a detour it can be placed between Jaipur and Agra. Ideally spend two nights here, go for the morning and evening Tiger Safaris and relax at your hotel/resort during the time in between. Another offbeat destination (especially for bird enthusiasts) could be the Bharatpur bird sanctuary.

Recommended mode of travel : Private car with driver . It can also be done using a combination of train rides and a car.

Delhi – Agra – Jaipur – Mandawa – Delhi

Looking for something rural and less touristy with interesting architecture and fresco paintings; include a stop at Mandawa in the Shekhawati Region.

Recommended mode of travel: Private car with driver.

Delhi – Agra – Jaipur – Udaipur – Delhi

Include Udaipur for a romantic end to your trip. Although Udaipur is a little touristy it is an absolutely charming city. Stay in a haveli hotel in a room with the view of the lake or in one of the luxurious resorts in the outskirts of the city.

Recommended mode of travel: Private car with driver + train ride + flight.

Route 2 – Classical Rajasthan Tour(12-14 nights)

Delhi – agra – jaipur – jodhpur and udaipur, plus one more city.

A more complete Rajasthan experience should include a couple of stops in Southern Rajasthan. The towns in Southern Rajasthan are more relaxed, offer a combination of stunning architecture and landscape. Start with the hustle and bustle of Delhi – Agra – Jaipur and end your trip with stops in Jodhpur and Udaipur.

Recommended mode of transport: Private car with driver between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, a train from Jaipur to Jodhpur, then another car from Jodhpur to Udaipur and a flight back to Delhi. En route to Udaipur from Jodhpur, you can also visit the splendid Jain temples of Ranakpur. This trip can be done the other way round too i.e. fly Delhi to Udaipur and then trace your way back to Delhi.

If you do not like to compromise on your comfort you can exclude the train journey and look at a rented car all through.

If you have a little more time you can also include a rural stop at either Rawla Narlai or Deo Garh Mahal between Jodhpur and Udaipur. Or you could also add a tiger safari in Ranthambore, stay in Pushkar the hippie and spiritual city, or even visit Jawai and catch some leopards in action.

Route 3 – Rajasthan, all the way around (14 nights)

Jaisalmer is a magical desert city by the edge of the Thar Desert. Getting to Jaisalmer takes a little effort, but it is worth the travel. Try and stay within the fort walls that offer gorgeous views of the city. Take a camel ride in the dunes around sunset or even better spend a night in the desert. It is a magical experience to be surrounded by sand dunes under the starry night sky.

There are a few points one should bear in mind when including Jaisalmer; It can get notoriously hot and should be avoided April onwards. Jaisalmer is best accessible from Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur by overnight trains. These trains need to be booked well in advance, ideally two months in advance.

Recommended mode of travel: Private car with a driver between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, followed by an overnight train and then another car from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur to Udaipur. Train options are possible between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur too.

This trip can be done the other way around i.e. starting with Udaipur.

If you have more time you can include a stop at Ranthambore National Park or the hippie-spiritual town of Pushkar.

Route 4 – All across Rajasthan with A trustworthy car and driver (14-18 nights)

If you have the luxury of time you can do a long loop across Rajasthan covering Delhi – Agra – Ranthambore – Jaipur – Bikaner – Jaisalmer – Jodhpur – Udaipur.

This trip is best enjoyed in a comfortable car with a driver that is with you all through your trip.

Try spending more time in Jaisalmer as it is usually the halfway point of your trip and you would be driving a lot. Remember Rajasthan is dotted with wonderful heritage hotels; old Havelis (Villas) and Palaces and many of them are very affordable. Ensure you pick your accommodation wisely. Stay in a healthy mix of hotels, some in the heart of the old city and then at times perched by the edge of the city.

Route 5 – Rajasthan during Festivals

You can time your Rajasthan trip to coincide with one of the many festivals that are celebrated in Rajasthan and India. Here is a list of a few festivals:

S ometime between end October and early to mid November, Diwali is celebrated. The exact dates change from year to year. Diwali is celebrated across most of India, especially with much more gusto in North India and Rajasthan. No matter where you are in Rajasthan during Diwali you will see the festivities all around. The general mood is festive.

Note – Noise and air pollution are elated during Diwali and it is a busy time for Indians to travel, so book in advance.

Holi (the festival of colours) – If you are willing to brave the onslaught of colours and a street party, plan a trip in March to coincide with the festival of Holi. Pushkar is the best town to celebrate Holi.

Note – the colours can be toxic and people are inebriated on the streets so one should be careful while travelling. However, if you are at a hotel with many tourists that organize a holi party you would get to participate in the festivities and still be safe.

Pushkar camel camp fair

The camel and cattle fair of Pushkar is another interesting festival one can include during their trip to Rajasthan. The celebrations are spread across a week. The first 5 days are the most active and interesting. The celebrations are restricted to only Pushkar and it is advisable to book well in advance.

Music Festivals

Jodhpur and Jaisalmer have music festivals each year. The exact dates change each year. The Rajasthan International Folk Festival in Jodhpur takes place in the month of October. And, in Jaisalmer in the month of February each year. If you can plan in advance as there’s nothing like planning your Rajasthan trip around a festival.

Around Udaipur

Chittorgarh

It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, and well worth the trek from Udaipur. About 120km away, and located on the banks of the rivers Gambhiri and Berach, the historic town is home to India's largest fort complex. Stay at the nearby Fort Begu ( Website ; doubles from Rs10,000), where you can look out at peacocks from your room, which incidentally features mosaic mirror work on the walls, and colourful glass panels in the arched windows.

Kumbhalgarh

Another UNESCO World Heritage site where you can try your hand at ziplining through the hilly terrain. About 85km from Udaipur, the nearby Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is home to some fascinating creatures—hyenas, sloth bears, leopards, the rare chinkara and numerous birds. Night drives here are truly magical. Your base while in the area should be Fateh Safari Lodge ( Website ; doubles from Rs16,000 for a minimum two-night stay), a family-owned boutique hotel, for the stunning scenery around it. The 35-room property, built 3,600ft above sea level, provides uninterrupted views of the Aravali range, which give way to the charming village of Narlai.

Mount Abu/Dilwara Jain Temples

Billed as Rajasthan's only hill station, mount Abu is home to a wildlife sanctuary (where you can spot civets, porcupines, sambhar and more) as well as multiple Jain temples. in Ranakpur, on the Udaipur- Jodhpur Highway? About two hours away from Udaipur, and close to the Ranakpur temples

of Udaipur, where you can visit the Dev Somnath Mandir, Juna Mahal, Badal Mahal and more. There's also an archaeological museum and the annual Baneshwar fair, in February, to look forward to. The clear waters of Gaib Sagar Lake and a private forest reserve frame the grey façade of Udai Bilas Palace ( Website ; doubles from Rs9,900), which features pillars, marble carvings and grand balconies. Perhaps best known with the hipster set for playing host to the annual Magnetic Fields Music festival in December, Alsisar is popular for its quiet comfort and immersion into a different side of Rajasthan. But first, check in to the ornate and opulent Malji Ka Kamra, ( Website ; doubles from Rs4,700) that was originally built by Mal Chand Kothari, over 100 years ago, to entertain artists and guests. Today, it has been converted into a hotel, where you can sample some delicious Rajasthani food before retiring for the night. The hotel is happy to organise visits to the local village, or arrange for guests to see potters and artisans at work.

Desert safari

A trip to Bikaner is incomplete without spending a day, or better yet, a night in the desert. Let camels take you into the Thar Desert where the golden sand beckons in every direction. While most people
opt for a day-long excursion, the intrepid can bed down for the night in tents that are functional. Rao Bikaji Camel Safari ( Website ) organises both types. For those looking to see the sunset in the desert, Rao Bikaji also offers a day-long tour that includes evening tea and views of the sun descending into the sandy expanse of the arid region.

Jain temples at Lodhruva

Lodhruva suffered several assaults from Mughals.
But each time, its rulers resurrected this village into
a place even more beautiful. Today, the ruins of Lodhruva, 7km from Jaisalmer, have some of the more stunning temples in the region. A 10th century Jain temple that
was rebuilt 500 years later,
a Shiva temple and other shrines are worth a visit for their architecture and design.

Abandoned village of Kuldhara

This was once
a thriving village, about 40mins away from the city, of thousands. What exactly happened is a mystery,
but local lore says that the villagers abandoned their homes overnight and cursed misfortune on anyone
who tried to settle there. Naturally, stories of ghosts and ghouls are rampant, and an adventurous few even dare to visit at night. We'd recommend a daytime visit, when it still wears a haunted look, so that you can get back to the safety of your hotel by nightfall.

Those who want to get under the skin
of the Thar Desert should sign up for one of the several overnight desert safaris. These range anywhere from two to seven days, and give a good taste of life on the sands. Damodra Desert Camp ( Website ; doubles from Rs9,400), which sits on the sands en route to the Sam Sand Dunes, about 30km from Jaisalmer is worth considering. The camp pitches its experience as rustic luxury, and offers sandboarding, camel safaris and evenings spent taking in local folk music.

Go birding at Desert National park

This sandy national park, with its ponds and lakes, the park is a haven for birds such as the great Indian bustard, falcons, and kestrels. In winter, migratory birds bring their own dash
of colour. Also on prowl are foxes, wolves, blackbucks and chinkaras. The sparse vegetation means only serious wildlife enthusiasts brave the sun. It also means that sightings are nearly guaranteed. The closest town is Khuri, which is 45km from the city, where The Mama's Resort & Camp ( Website ; doubles from Rs6,500) is the best place to bed down for the night.

About 120km from Jaisalmer, just short of the India-Pakistan border
is the site of an epic battle between the two countries. It was here in 1971 that a small company of soldiers refused to vacate their post under a severe assault from Pakistan, and successfully repelled the incursion. Today, you can visit the border post, for a day trip, interact with soldiers and see the Pakistani tanks and jeeps that were captured in 1971. Check with local tour operators for permits and procedures.

Throngs of devotees, both Muslim and Hindu, visit
 this nondescript town 180km from Jaipur, to pray at the tomb of the famous Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti who died here in 1236. The dargah is one of the most important Sufi shrines, the entry to which is through 
its bazaar and imposing gates. While Ajmer is also home to other monuments such as Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, Akbar's Palace and Museum, and the Taragarh Fort, the town is centred on this major pilgrimage spot. Urs, the death anniversary of the saint,
 is when Ajmer is at its festive best. When you're ready to
 rest for the evening, make your way to Badnor House ( Website ; doubles from Rs2,700), which is a royal retreat in the heart of the town.

Bharatpur–Keoladeo National Park

Around 184km from Jaipur and 26km from Fatehpur Sikri, Bharatpur is famous for its bird sanctuary—the Keoladeo National Park. This top ornithological destination plays host to over 380 species of indigenous birds and other migratory species. A day trip from Bharatpur, the beautiful 18th century Deeg Palace, 32km from the park—summer retreat of the Jat kings—is a sprawling complex of palaces, pavilions and gardens. The Bagh ( Website ; doubles from Rs8,000), a hotel set in 12
 acres features 23 rooms and a restaurant that serves traditional vegetarian cuisine.

An elephant camp located in a private forest in the foothills of the Aravalis, Dera Amer ( Website ; doubles from Rs25,000) is where visitors can live with the elephants. Located only half an hour from Jaipur, the camp also provides jeep safaris to the Amer Fort, Nahargarh National Park and surrounding areas. For those looking for more local wildlife, explore the region on camel back, or go birding and keep your eyes peeled for dusky eagle owls and laughing doves, among other species.

Dundlod Fort

If a historic getaway is what you're looking for, make your way to Dundlod Fort ( Website ; doubles from Rs4,800), which 
is approximately 150km from Jaipur. The fort is now a heritage hotel and you can soak in the Rajputana lifestyle in the heart
 of Rajasthan's Shekhawati region. Guests share the fort with the royal owners, and thus feel like you are engaging in a royal lifestyle as well. Horseback safaris can be arranged for those who want to get out and explore the surrounding country side.

Located in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, known for its stunning havelis, Mandawa lies 168 km from Jaipur. Typical of the region,

Devotees throng the lakes and the Brahma temple to conduct rituals during the full moon period in the Hindu month of Kartik. The camel fair, held around the same time, turns the town into the venue for a colourful carnival. Amble along the ghats to watch priests and pilgrims scatter rose petals in worship at the lake, or sip on a ‘special' lassi at one of its hip cafés. Alternatively, check out the greenhouses at The Green House Resort ( Website ; doubles from Rs6,000), which you should check into. With 
LcD TVs and suites that have private patios, this eco-friendly resort is a great retreat. Ramathra Fort

The Ramathra Fort is now a heritage hotel, but was given as a fiefdom by the Maharaja of Karauli to his son Thakur Bhoj Pal in 1645. Named after Lord Ram, who, legend says, stopped here on his way 
to Lanka, the hilltop fort has an enviable view of surrounding farmlands, forests and the Kalisil Lake. While tiger sightings are rare, you might just spot deer, wolves and jackals on your jeep safari. For those looking to spend an afternoon, take a trip on the lake, and maybe you might spot a crocodile on the banks. Within the fort, lies multiple shrines— like the Ganesh Mandir and Shiva Mandir, while the interior of the fort is a fine example of latticework and traditional artistry. Samode Palace

Only 42 km from Jaipur and on the outskirts of Shekhawati, Samode ( Website ; doubles from Rs25,000) is known for its 475-year-old palace that is now a heritage hotel. Its intricate carvings, frescoed corridors, stunning glasswork of the Sheesh Mahal or Hall of Mirrors, and Mughal gardens nearby ensure that you have enough to do. Ask the hotel to organise a horse or camel safari of the surrounding regions or walk through the village and shop for handicrafts from the colourful stores.

The Sariska Tiger Reserve and National Park lies at a distance of 107km from Jaipur and while its tiger population has been dwindling in recent times, it is a serene place lacking the usual crowds. Home to the leopard, golden jackal, four-horned antelope, Indian eagle-owl and other wildlife, the national park is also dotted with temples and atmospheric ruins such as the Kankwari Fort and Hanuman Temple. Those who aren't inclined for the early morning safari can start the 
day with yoga, and your room includes the creature comforts you'd expect. The 10th century Ranthambore Fort, which encloses a group of Hindu and Jain temples, rises above the forest on a rock, made all the more romantic in this setting.
