Beverley Knight at Reading’s Hexagon: Tuesday 17th October 2023

October 26, 2023 By Ian Hardacre

Beverley Knight on her 50th UK Tour in Reading was our second concert to see her this year. Earlier we had attended Beverley Knight’s 50th concert to celebrate her birthday in London earlier in the year.

The concert in Reading  was the first concert of her UK wide tour and was after the release of her latest album ‘The Fifth Chapter.

beverley knight tour reading

The concert was at the Hexagon in Reading – a venue that we had never been to before. This convert we had again bought so-called VIP tickets that gave us access to the sound check before the concert, hear a couple of songs and be part of a Q&A session with Beverley. Arriving early for at the Hexagon we queued and at the bag check I was called out for having a ‘professional camera’. My choices were to go back to the car park and out in the car or allow security to retain it for me. Funnily enough this was exactly the same camera that I had taken into the Lafayette in London in March.

The security guards were very apologetic and promised to keep the camera safe. I did appeal to the tour manager but he was adamant no professional cameras except those with press passes. Plus professional cameras obstructed the sight of others in the concert – I’m guessing that he hasn’t been behind rows of smartphones video recording with bright screens obstructing the view!

All my images from the concert are from my iPhone.

The comp from the VIP tickets

We were both given a plastic bag containing a signed poster and passes to get us into the sound check. Our posters from the March concert were just handed to us and we left them at the back as where were we supposed to keep them as at that concert the VIP tickets didn’t get us seats? !

Beverley Knight sound check

The good news for us was that we had seats for the sound check. We sat in our designated seats which were on the second row just left of centre stage.

Beverley Knight

We were all clearly fans and it was a great experience to see and hear her. At the end she sat at the edge of the stage and answered questions.

After the sound check we were asked to leave and we went looking for a drink and something to eat. Tea, crisps and cakes were our snack before the concert proper.

The undisputed British Soul Queen, Beverley Knight, has dropped her exceptional new single “I’m On Fire.” This captivating track was written by Mitch Allen (known for his work with Demi Lovato) and Evan Bogart (renowned for collaborating with Beyoncé). The song also features the incredible voices of the London Community Gospel Choir. “I’m On Fire” is part of Beverley Knight’s highly praised studio album, The Fifth Chapter, which is available now on Tag8/BMG.

Last night’s episode of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing results show featured a breathtaking live vocal performance, and now the single has been released.

“Beverley describes the track ‘I’m On Fire’ as a distinct departure from the rest, exuding an upbeat, country gospel vibe. Its energetic rhythms, foot-stomping, hand-clapping, and choir harmonies give it the essence of Mississippi Delta. This song marked Mitch’s initial recording for the album in LA.”

Beverley’s latest record, released last month to celebrate her 50th birthday, showcases her exceptional talent. It earned the title of BBC Radio 2’s ‘Album Of The Week’, with The Daily Mail praising its “dazzling versatility,” The Sun highlighting her “perfect vocals,” and the Daily Mirror labeling her a “world-class performer.”

Beverley is no stranger to the spotlight, excelling in various areas. She is an Olivier award-winning actress from the West End, a familiar face on Saturday night TV through her appearances on Starstruck, and an extraordinary singer with a highly successful music career. At the age of 50, she has reached new heights in her fame.

Beverley’s latest music collection, created in collaboration with renowned songwriters Diane Warren, Evan Bogart, Sebastian Kole, Ollie Green, and Andrew Roachford, features co-production by Jimmy Hogarth, AC Burrell, Mitch Allan, Josh Cohen/DJ Walde. This highly anticipated album represents a magnificent exploration of the inspirations that have shaped Beverley’s remarkable career, marking her return to the music scene after seven years.

Beverley achieved multiple Top 10 albums and sold over a million copies in the UK, with four gold certifications. Her latest studio album, Soulsville, debuted directly in the UK Top 10.

Knight, a talented performer hailing from Wolverhampton, has established an impressive presence in the world of theater in recent years. She made her notable West End debut as the lead in The Bodyguard and later took on the starring role in the Tony-winning production of Memphis The Musical. Upon Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s request, Knight joined the cast of Cats, where she portrayed the iconic character, Grizabella. In 2021, she showcased her exceptional talent once again as the commanding manager of soul group The Drifters in the acclaimed musical The Drifters Girl at Garrick Theatre. This performance earned her an Olivier nomination for Best Actress, while the show itself was nominated for Best New Musical.

Beverley received widespread praise for her role as Emmeline Pankhurst in Sylvia at The Old Vic, earning her the Best Supporting Actress in a Musical award at the Olivier Awards in April. The production was also nominated for Best New Musical and Best Choreographer.

Beverley Knight: ‘When I’m on tour, my rider is kettle, water, teabags’

The singer and actor on why she’s teetotal, her mum’s Jamaican-style shepherd’s pie … and why Prince was the perfect dinner host

I was determined when I turned 50 it was going to be a great time, because I understand perfectly well the privilege of reaching my half century. So many people in the music industry just don’t get there. Or they get there and they are in a real state. And I’m here, relatively unscathed. So I’m really careful about what I eat. What goes in my body in general. Just because I know what food can do. It can be obviously a wonderful comfort and a treat, but it’s also really healing … She says, just having demolished a sausage roll.

Growing up, I ate mostly Jamaican heritage or a Jamaican take on British food . I remember I asked Mum to make a shepherd’s pie, which she did, but she made it much more interesting, because the seasoning was a bit more lively. So there would be that blending of the food-culture lines. But things like welsh rarebit, I bloody love that, don’t change a thing! Absolutely fantastic.

I’ve never drunk alcohol. Many Christmases ago, when I was about 14, my uncle gave me orange juice – I thought – but it had vodka in it. Christmas treat! It wasn’t. I was so ill: I had a rash break out around my mouth and neck, and felt like I couldn’t breathe. I was ill for days. My mum was like, “Are you trying to kill my child?” My uncle was mortified. And that was the end of that: never touched alcohol again.

Tea is my drink. Black tea in the morning, and then as the day goes on it’s the green teas, it’s the mints or chamomile or ginger or whatever. When I’m on tour, my rider consists … yes, you guessed it: kettle, lots of water, teabags. It’s the first thing I look for in any dressing room. I’m the cheapest date going!

I didn’t drink at a time when it was definitely unfashionable to be teetotal. I’d go to a club, do a PA and then ask them to put the kettle on after I’d come off stage. At the time people would look at me sideways. Now people just find it fun and quirky and, yeah, definitely Bev.

I moved to London in 1995 and experienced food and a level of cuisine I’d never had before. Never had Spanish food until I was an adult. Never had sushi. We had Italian in Wolverhampton, at least. And we definitely had Indian. But a whole world opened up to me and I loved it.

My husband is an ex-chef, so he tends to take over the kitchen – lucky me! I showed him West Indian and specifically Jamaican dishes, and now he smashes them better than me, which really annoys me. But he’ll tell you himself, he is a bit of a nightmare in the kitchen. Because he’ll stand there and watch you: “Oh, I wouldn’t have done it like that …” He’ll tell my mum! My mum, who’s 75 and has been cooking since she was six. She’ll be like, “Get out of my kitchen!” in the best and most bantery way.

Prince was a brilliant host, brilliant. He invited me to Los Angeles in 2008 to perform at his Oscars party and I remember vividly walking into his house and him saying: “Are you hungry? Do you want something to eat?” I knew Prince didn’t eat meat, but he had a chef in and I got salmon and salads. And it was … it was a spread. I don’t know why I remember that salmon so much, but it was gorgeous.

My favourite things

Food Ackee and saltfish, all day long. Ideally, ackee, saltfish, a slice of breadfruit fried with plantain and even a cheeky little green banana and bammy, which is like a pancake made of cassava.

Place to eat It’s gone now, but Pete Sanchez-Iglesias, along with his late brother Jonray, had a Michelin-starred restaurant in Bristol called Casamia, which was outstanding. The best food experience of my life. He now owns a place called Paco Tapas, which is again Michelin-starred, and probably my second favourite.

Dish to make I do a really good jerk chicken with rice and peas. But my jerk chicken is hot and you’ve got to be brave! Ask my band.

Beverley Knight’s new album, The Fifth Chapter, is out now. She stars in Sister Act at the Dominion, London from 15 Mar–8 June (sisteractthemusical.co.uk)

Review Beverley Knight at Birmingham Symphony Hall - 'Emotional return of Soul Queen'

Wolverhampton's Beverley Knight brought 50 Tour to Birmingham and choked back tears after singing in front of family and friends

Black Country-born Beverley Knight returned to Birmingham on her 50 Tour and I was surprised at how it made me feel. After 30 years in the business, the British Queen of Soul's voice seems more powerful than ever, yet she's just as humble and down to earth.

Turning 50 in March this year, she's marked it by going out on tour and releasing a new album, aptly called The Fifth Chapter. Performing in a tight-fitting elegant black and white catsuit, she looked incredible.

With a small live band and three backing singers, all dressed immaculately in white, she opened at Birmingham Symphony Hall last night(Saturday, November 4) with some of her '90s RnB classics of Greatest Day and Made It Back. Welcoming Beverley back to the Midlands, the crowd gave her one of the loudest cheers I've ever heard at a gig - and you could tell she was touched.

Growing up in the Black Country , I like many there know people who've rubbed shoulders with Beverley. They all say the same thing about how 'nice' and 'humble' she is. And that was very apparent at this gig.

When a fan later yelled out 'love you Beverley', she gasped 'thank you', before adding 'it's so nice to hear normal accents'. Proud of her Midlands heritage, Beverley would go on to say "they may make fun of our accents and how we speak but I know that the people from here are gold.

"We showed everyone just how gold we are at the Commonwealth Games ," the singer added. And she should know after performing Inner City Life with Goldie while wearing a Wolverhampton Wanderers football shirt at the Games' Closing Ceremony .

band on stage with singer at front

Much of the early part of the concert focused on songs from the new album that she is obviously excited about. From Someone Else's Problem to I'm On Fire and Not Prepared For You, they showed off her staggering vocal range.

It was when she later dipped back into her back catalogue that the audience burst alive. Flavour Of The Old School and Get Up! were crowd-pleasers and came with Beverley doing some 90s dance moves too. But they were pale in comparison to the more soulful Keep This Fire Burning and Gold.

It was at this point that the gig became more sentimental and intimate. Speaking on the death of her close friend and musical director Paul Reid from Great Barr on Christmas Day in 2020, the star paid tribute to 'Reidy'. She sang a trio of slower songs in front of his family, who were in the audience.

man and woman on stage singing

It included the heartfelt track Fallen Soldier that she wrote about the murder of Stephen Lawrence, which Beverley sang beautifully with such intense emotion There was another surprise when she moved on to song Sista Sista as her schoolfriend she wrote it about was also in the crowd.

Fans had to wait until the end of the main part of the show for favourites Shoulda Woulda Coulda and Come As You Are. Then, after a quick costume dress into a glamorous short black dress, the encore paid tribute to some of her icons.

A cover of I'm Every Woman to honour Chaka Khan's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week was a blistering showstopper followed by her reworking of Prince's I Wanna Be Your Lover.

Quiz: Sayings you only know if you're from Birmingham or the Black Country - how many do you know?

Closing the show on new track Everything's Gonna Be Alright, it was an uplifting finale that wrapped the audience in a comforting blanket of hope. "With my family here, my friends, my old school friends and the good people of the Midlands, I've loved every minute," said Beverley, choking back tears at the end of the gig. And so did I.

Proving she's got one of the best voices in the business over a 90 minute gig, I couldn't help but feel immensely proud and emotional at her return to the Midlands. Beverley's the best that British soul has got and she's ours.

The crowd were on their feet as Beverley Knight brought her '50' tour to the Liverpool Philharmonic.

After celebrating her fiftieth birthday in March, Beverley Knight is embarking on her biggest UK tour to celebrate the milestone and a career spanning three decades. The Queen of British soul brought her '50' tour to the Liverpool Philharmonic on Thursday, November 2 and had the crowd on their feet from the first song.

From the get-go, fans were taken back in time and treated to some of Beverley Knight's biggest hits. She kicked off the night with 'Greatest Day' from her 1998 album, Prodical Sista, before telling the delighted Liverpool crowd "you look glorious".

She then continued with another hit from Prodical Sista, 'Made It Back.' Before her third song of the night, Beverley Knight told the crowd: "It's so good to be back here, I love it. The best accent in Britain."

As she made her way through her back catalogue spanning almost 30 years, it was hard not to be completely blown away by her. Her vocals were faultless.

There were many moments throughout the night were the crowd were left completely mesmerised. As she sang 'Gold' - effortlessly - the crowd fell silent, clearly blown away by the magnitude of her talent.

She had the crowd in the palm of her hand and clapping along as she belted out, 'I'm on Fire' accompanied by the incredible vocals of her three backing vocalists. She then took fans on a trip down memory lane with arguably her biggest hit, 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda.'

Seemingly having no plans to slow the night down, Beverley Knight performed covers of 'I'm Every Woman' and 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' - a fitting finish to a night of music nostalgia.

Gig Review: Beverley Knight at the Royal Concert Hall

After having the honour of interviewing global star Beverley Knight last month, our Addie Kenogbon was beyond hyped to have been invited to see her show for herself at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall during her biggest ever UK headline tour, in celebration of her fiftieth birthday...

Beverley Knight Press Shot

I’m not ashamed to admit that my childhood definitely involved belting out quite a few Beverley Knight tracks in the mirror with a hairbrush, so it felt surreal to get to chat to her last month and see her perform for myself. That being said, I wasn’t quite prepared for the rollercoaster of emotions her show would take me on.

Arriving at the concert hall it was fantastic to see such an array of fans all as excited as I was to see the Queen of Soul take to the stage. From rowdy gaggles of girl friends who were already singing all Beverley’s classics with accompanying dance routines as they waited for the show to start, to entire families who had brought their teenage kids, parents and grandparents, they were all there and fizzing with anticipation.

As we took our seats, we took in the impressive all-white stage set up, which featured two sets of keys, drums and guitars all ready for Beverley’s iconic eight-piece band to begin making magic.

The show kicked off with a performance from super talented American singer-songwriter Casey McQuillen who warmed the crowd up perfectly with her stunningly honest and soulful songs, coupled with her hilarious wit and charm. She then made way for a DJ set featuring all the best disco, soul and old school RnB classics to get everyone suitably hyped, before the star herself emerged like an absolute goddess, dressed in a skin-tight black and white bodysuit. All I can say is, fifty? Where?

There are some people who have an innate power to fill up every single corner of every room they’re in thanks to their magnetically captivating energy, and Beverley Knight is definitely one of them. From the moment she stepped onto the stage, we were all hooked and there was no looking away.

She opened the show with a bang with Made It Back, a fitting opener given the fact this was her first time back to the Royal Concert Hall in six years, during a tour that marked her triumphant return to the music world. Setting the tone for the evening perfectly, it had everyone on their feet, priming us all for an evening of dancing the night away.

The next high energy song on the setlist, Greatest Day definitely had us all believing Beverley was having just that, as she danced and jumped across the stage with amazing finesse, energy and unfaltering powerhouse vocals. In my last interview with her, Beverley had mentioned that the stage is her home, and seeing her effortlessly work it like only a pro with a music career as long as hers could, you can certainly tell it’s what she was born to do.

Systematic Overload, the first track of the evening from her new album, The Fifth Chapter came next. Released earlier this year, it quickly became Radio 2’s most played track on the network and is certainly one of my favourite tracks on the album. Despite having a career that spans four decades, the fact that Beverley can still create music today that people can get excited about is a real testament to her unmistakable talent, and Systematic Overload highlights that perfectly.

Taking us on a trip down memory lane, next came Beverley’s 2004 hit song Keep This Fire Burning and with it memories of watching the music video on MTV with my sister during the school holidays.

As the darker nights set in, it was the perfect way to suspend reality and step into a world of fantastic music and dancing in honour of the return of the undisputed British treasure and Queen of Soul

Beverley also gave a shout out to her mum who was sitting in the audience enjoying the show with us, and there’s something about the fact that even a star as big as Beverley gets excited to see her mum in the audience that really brought home how wonderfully down to earth she is, despite her stardom.

Digging deeper into the archives, Beverley pulled out another one of pre-teen Addie’s hairbrush classics, Gold , which provided a beautiful hit of nostalgia and a few leaky tear ducts as we all dutifully switched on our phone torches, and belted out the heartfelt lyrics which serve as an anthemic reminder to know your worth.

Bringing the mood to a slightly more sombre tone, and providing a little rest for our dancing feet, the show’s next song Fallen Soldier was dedicated to Beverley’s former band member, Paul Reid who sadly passed away on Christmas day three years ago and had created the arrangement for the song with Beverley. Explaining a little more about the beautiful song and its significance, Beverley told us how the song had been written after the murder of black British teenager Stephen Lawrence who was racially attacked in 1993 while waiting for a bus - a fitting tribute during Black History Month too.

Then after a few moments of reflection and a chance for Beverley to change outfits, the next song, and the third song of the night from the new album, I’m On Fire , had us all back on our feet before launching into Beverley’s chart topping 2002 hit song Shoulda Woulda Coulda. If there was anyone that by some miracle wasn’t yet singing by then, this song certainly cleared that up, and twenty years later, it’s safe to say we all still knew every word as we sang them back with vigour.

She then launched into another show-stopping classic, Come As You Are with everyone singing, stamping and clapping along to the catchy beat. Bringing the set to an end was Last One on My Mind, her hit song from the new album and the disco party track that has been dominating the radio waves since its release.

Of course the audience certainly weren’t done yet though, and as they frantically demanded an encore, Beverley and her band generously obliged as she returned to the stage sporting a new outfit and belting out a powerful rendition of Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman. What followed was a high-octane medley of disco classics that had the atmosphere pumping and left none of us willing to leave.

It’s safe to say there are worse ways to spend a chilly autumn Tuesday evening. And, as the darker nights set in, it was the perfect way to suspend reality and step into a world of fantastic music and dancing in honour of the return of the undisputed British treasure and Queen of Soul.
