For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

People visiting famous sites around China with the G Adventures' China Express group travel tour

For travelers on a budget, G Adventures offers cheap group tours that make dream destinations accessible to nearly anyone. (Think: sailing the Galapagos for just $1,124 , criss-crossing India’s Golden Triangle for $559 , or spending 8 days in Bali for less than $800.)

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

Everything you need to know about traveling on the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train

We’ll never run out of reasons to visit Japan , one of the most spectacular travel destinations out there. From its vast history and captivating traditions to its sumptuous cuisine and eye-catching design scene, the country will thrill you. Our immersive Japan tours are built to show off every facet of local culture, which is why most of our itineraries include taking the iconic Shinkansen, or the Japanese bullet train—a shining example of Japanese innovation. These high-speed engineering marvels can run up to 200 miles per hour and operate on a vast network that efficiently connects the many corners of the Japanese archipelago. The impressive combination of safety, comfort, and speed makes the Shinkansen the best way to travel around Japan. (For instance, it will get you from Tokyo to Kyoto—roughly 285 miles apart—in just over two hours.)

On our Japan tours , the logistics of taking the Shinkansen will be taken care of for you. But if you’re looking for some pre-trip insight on high-speed trains in Japan, read on, because, as staffer Tom tells us, “Other countries certainly have impressive networks of high-speed rail, but none will match the speed, cleanliness, reliability, and safety of the Shinkansen.”

Jump ahead to... What is the Shinkansen bullet train? The history What makes it so fast? Know before you go Trips that include a ride on the Shinkansen

book n go travel & tours

What’s the history of the Japanese bullet train?

Did you know that when it debuted in 1964, the Tokaido Shinkansen made Japan the first country in the world to introduce a high-speed train system? The original plans for the Shinkansen started well before the 1960s, however, as land for the buildout was acquired as early as the 1930s. Japan wanted a high-speed train system to connect Tokyo to other parts of the country, especially as the nation was beginning to experience rapid economic growth and the existing train system was becoming extremely congested. The Tokaido Shinkansen connected three of the country’s biggest cities: Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. Sixty years later, that line is still among the most widely used in the network and one of the busiest high-speed connections in the world. In the 2022 fiscal year, the Tokaido Shinkansen alone carried 134 million passengers. Today, the Shinkansen travels on a network of more than 1,830 miles of train tracks.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

book n go travel & tours

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

book n go travel & tours

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

book n go travel & tours

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

book n go travel & tours

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

book n go travel & tours

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

book n go travel & tours

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

book n go travel & tours

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

20 Things Every Author Should Know Before Starting a Book Tour by Stephanie Steinberg

Stephanie Steinberg

Before my book was published, I thought book tours sounded charming. What could be better than talking about your book to interested readers, traveling the country and – hopefully – making a little money? Sign me up! By the time I finished applying to book fairs and scheduling book talks, my tour included 13 cities from coast to coast. But once I actually set off for my first stop, I learned a tour isn’t so charming – in fact, it takes a lot of work. With no publicist or agent giving me advice (I’ve gone the DIY-book promotion route), I’ve learned through trial and error what makes a book tour successful.

I wish someone had shared these tips before I started my journey.  So here are some book tour best practices and must-do’s I’ve picked up (and stole from veteran authors) that you might find helpful if you’re a book tour rookie, too.

Pack your books in a rolling suitcase. Ladies, trust me when I say you do not want to schlep heavy cardboard boxes from your trunk to your book table in heels. Rolling a suitcase across a parking lot is a lot easier. This tip is for the strong guys too, though. If you’re flying to an event, you can avoid the cost of shipping books by packing them in a carry-on (assuming you choose an airline without bag fees).

Bring your own tablecloth. Never assume your table will be covered – unless event organizers tell you it will be. It’s worth buying your own tablecloth to tuck in your bag. Otherwise, you might run into trouble. I saw one author dash to Bed, Bath & Beyond 20 minutes before a Washington D.C. book fair because she missed the organizer’s email warning that card tables would be bare.

Pro tip: Pick a color that complements your book jacket. Or find a pattern from a craft store or online that relates to your book’s theme. (My book focuses on the University of Michigan, so I found a maize and blue table cover on Amazon for my signings at Michigan bars.)

Make a poster of your book cover to display on your table. Sure, you can arrange your books nicely, but a poster takes a display up a notch. Your publisher might even make this for you. If not, it’s easy to do at FedEx. You can walk in a store and provide a high-resolution image of your cover via email that they’ll print in a day or two. Or submit an order online here , and pick up your poster the next day. An 18×24-inch mounted foam board costs roughly $35. Staples also offers same-day printing and a banner stand option if you really want to stand out.

Set out a candy dish. In all honesty, people will likely wander over to take a Hershey kiss, maybe ask what your book is about, and then walk away. But the chocolate accomplishes your No. 1 goal: Draw people to your table. Even if just one piece of candy entices one new reader, you win. Just beware of fairs with kids: Your candy dish might empty before you can say the title of your book.

Order a Square reader. People don’t always carry cash. And if your book is worth more than 20 bucks, they might not want to part with whatever cash is in their wallet. Rather than risk missing a sale, get a Square reader at squareup.com so you can accept credit cards. It takes a few days for the small white device to arrive in the mail. All you have to do is attach it to your phone, download the Square Register app, enter pricing information about your book (don’t forget the sales tax) and you’re good to go. It’s free to register, but Square does take a 2.75 percent cut from every transaction. I promise the convenience and ability to track sales is worth it.

Don’t for get to bring …

  • Extra pens. Find a pen you love, and buy it in bulk. You don’t want to get stuck at a signing with your favorite pen out of ink. (Unfortunately, I’ve been there.)
  • A phone charger. Because the last thing you want is your phone to die mid-Square transaction.
  • Change. If you’re taking cash, have singles, fives, 10s and 20s on hand.
  • Snacks. Thoughtful event organizers should provide a water bottle, and if you’re lucky, lunch. But not all book fairs have a big budget, so bring whatever you need to keep your energy up when you’re answering – for the zillionth time –how you got the idea for your book.
  • Friend(s). If a friend is free and offers to help at a book fair or signing, accept! You can leave her in charge when you need a bathroom break, want to stretch your legs or feel like scoping out the competition at other tables.

The Promotion

Print a press release. There will be times you’ll have a line of people waiting to talk to you. You might not have time to give each person your book pitch (especially if the woman at the front won’t stop asking questions). That’s where a press release comes to your rescue. People who see you’re busy can read the paper to get a synopsis of the book instead of waiting impatiently in line. Include a few quotes from reviews and the cover image, too.  If the book catches their eye, they’ll come back. If not, at least they’ll be happy you didn’t waste their time.

Print tour date cards. David might not buy your book, but if he sees you’re heading to Chicago, he might know a friend there who would. That’s why you need to offer another handout with a list of tour stops. I found a local company to make a 4-by-6 inch card printed with my book cover on the front and the dates and locations of my book stops, social media accounts and ordering information on the back. You can make this any dimension, but an index card size makes it easy for women to stick in their purse – plus, it can double as a bookmark. Which brings me to…

Give away swag. If you can swing the cost, turn your book cover into a giveaway. My publisher was nice enough to make tote bags with my book title printed on the front. (My friends use it for errands and groceries, and it’s great free advertising around town!) I’ve seen other authors make pens, and you could order anything from mugs and hats , to T-shirts at Staples. If you’re on a budget, bookmarks are easy to print at home.

Take pictures. Of the table. Of you with the book. Of readers with the book. Of you and readers with the book. Anything you can use to promote on your social media accounts. Plus, if you take pictures with your readers, odds are they’ll share them on their Facebook page, and you might gain another reader who didn’t know about your book until you popped up on their timeline with their best friend.

Create a hashtag. You may be thinking, does my book really need a hashtag ? Yes, it does. A hashtag will make it easier to track what people are tweeting or posting about your book. It can also help you engage with your readers who will appreciate a RT (which means you need a Twitter account if you don’t already). Just don’t get hashtag crazy. Pick a short one that matches your title or a recognizable theme in your book. (Mine is #EditorialFreedom.) Then slap it on your marketing materials and social media bios. And tweet it with those pictures you just took.

The Signing

Write fast – but not so fast you spell your name wrong. True story: I got so overwhelmed by the line at my first signing (a good problem to have, I know) that I started writing too fast and transposed letters in my last name. Whether you have two people in line, or two dozen, it’s OK to take a minute to write a message and chat with each person. They stood in line to see you. The least you can do is write a legible and correctly spelled autograph.

Think of a few go-to messages. Sure, all readers want a personal note addressed to them, but you might not have time to think of something on the spot. Instead, come up with three or four short messages you can rotate among readers. It will save time, and you’ll avoid the stress of not knowing what to write while someone’s hovering over you.

Make people spell their name on Post-its. You can pass the sticky notes down a line, or keep them on your table. No matter how well you know someone, request that everyone writes their name or who the book should be addressed to. What’s worse than spelling your own name wrong? Spelling your cousin’s name wrong…right in front of her…in a book she’s paying $20 for…that she’ll have forever as a reminder.

Steal secrets from other authors. The author at the book fair table next to you is hogging all your potential customers. He doesn’t have George Clooney’s looks, and he’s not a bestselling author. So what’s the deal? Chat him up (when he has a minute), and find out why he’s the center of attention. Authors tend to be friendly people, and chances are Mr. Popular will be happy to share his tricks.

Have fun. This tip comes last, but it may be the most important. You spent months, perhaps years, on this work, and it’s finally in your hands. Share the joy. Readers will absorb your I-just-published-a-book glow, and they’ll be excited to read it if you’re excited to talk about it.

I’m still mid-book tour, so if there’s something I missed on this list, I want to know! Email me at [email protected] . Good luck on your tour!

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Your second choice is to journey to Siena and embark on a walking tour through its narrow Gothic streets. Take in stunning palaces, mansions and the historic Piazza del Campo along the way. Then, get to know local life in a contrada (neighborhood) whose community life is centered around the colorful Palio horse race.

Begin your trip with a 3-night sojourn in the Eternal City. Toast to your Roman getaway with a welcome dinner in a local restaurant. See the city with an expert guide, including an in-depth tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. The remainder of the day is yours. Perhaps you will join an optional dinner in a popular restaurant, where you’ll indulge in a hearty meal accompanied by wine and local entertainment.

Your culinary exploration continues with a demonstration of authentic gelato making and a walking tour of Bologna, home to the oldest continuously operating university in the western world and birthplace of some of Italy’s most iconic foods: tortellini, mortadella and Bolognese sauce. Buon Appetito!

  • Montecatini Terme - Food Valley Tour and Tastings - Bologna
  • This morning, traverse the Apennine Mountains and cross from Tuscany into the Emilia region, Italy’s foodie haven. Visit a local farm producing Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese according to traditional codes dating back to the 1300s. Then pause for a light lunch at a nearby villa where the family still ages their Balsamic Vinegar production in the attic, as countless generations have done before them. Your exploration of Emilia’s Food Valley concludes with a demonstration – and tasting – of authentic gelato, before arriving in Bologna, your home for the next 2 nights.
  • Bologna - Walking Tour - Food Tour
  • Spend the morning exploring Bologna in company of an expert guide. During your walking tour, discover the origin of Bologna’s several nicknames – la dotta (the learned) and la rossa (the red, from the colors of its bricks) and la grassa (the fat). Perhaps the latter nickname is the most fitting. Food is a true passion here, as Bologna is the birthplace of some of Italy’s most iconic foods: tortellini, mortadella - the progenitor of baloney - and Bolognese sauce. Visit the ancient seat of the University – the oldest continuously operating in the western world – before browsing Bologna’s specialty food shops. Then, sample local delicacies such as Parma ham and lasagna during lunch at a local eatery. Spend the afternoon at leisure in this lively town. Indulge in some people-watching at a café in Piazza Maggiore, the expansive plaza at the heart of the city’s social life, or search for Bologna’s very own leaning towers: the Garisenda and Asinelli. How Long To Spend at the Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower Park

Short Answer: 3 hours

Assuming you get tickets or a tour to go up the Eiffel Tower, you should plan on at least three hours. As you’ll read in my below recommendations, I think this is best done in a half-day event including a meal and ideally champagne if you plan on doing things correctly.

If you are reading this then you are very possibly planning ahead for your trip. I recommend putting aside some additional sheckles to have a killer meal on the Eiffel Tower! Eating and exploring would take about 4 hours at lunch or 5 to 6 hours at dinner.

If you can’t get tickets or decide not to go up (which is a true mistake!) you should plan on spending 20 minutes walking through the area until you capture that picture of you touching the top of the Eiffel Tower.

How To Get To the Eiffel Tower

The preferred method of transport in Paris is the metro. The Eiffel Tower is located footsteps away from Camp de Mars / Tour Eiffel station which is on the RER C. You can also get off at the Ecole Militair on Line 8 or Bir-Hakeim on Line 6 which are both within walking distance. When you get out of the metro station look for the Eiffel Tower and you’re there!

You can take the 30, 42, 80, 82, 86 or Direct 2. Get off when you feel you are close enough to walk to the tower.

Luckily, you can see the Eiffel Tower from basically anywhere in Paris. Walk towards it!

What To See When Visiting the Eiffel Tower

book n go travel & tours

You may read this and think, “You go to the tower, then you go up the tower, and finally, you see a great view. Right?”

In reality, there’s a lot more to do than you may expect. The structure is extremely tall and it is framed by two huge parks that occupy more than 2 million square feet of downtown Paris, France. In this section, we’ll explain what do to in, at the top, and around the Eiffel Tower.

First Floor, Second Floor, and the Summit

Yes, you should make every effort possible to go up the Eiffel Tower. The tickets start at €11.30, which is affordable enough for anyone who can afford a visit to Paris.

However, don’t think you can show up on a Saturday and say, “Two please!” These tickets are extremely difficult to get. You’re going to want to book ahead, especially if you’re looking to see the best view from the summit.

Hungry? Restaurants at the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower may look like a thin, wiry structure but at any given moment there could be up to 3,000 people eating, drinking, or snapping selfies from 58 meters to 276 meters off the ground on the Eiffel’s three observation decks.

When I travel, I’m a bit of a bon vivant . We all work hard, so decompressing on vacation and enjoying the sweet fruits of our labor is super important.

This is why I always say, “If you can, you should go inside.” This goes for eating at Madame Brassiere or Le Jules Verne—if you can. Check out our dedicated article on eating at the Eiffel Tower to plan and even make reservations.

For the active traveler, this climbing tour of the Eiffel Tower is another solid choice. With skip-the-line tickets and a local guide, you’ll climb 674 steps to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. Take in the awesome views from this popular level before getting in the elevator to the summit. You can enjoy your time on either level as long as you like, so don’t forget to make a restaurant reservation!

Facts and History of the Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower Zip Line

  • The Eiffel Tower is located in a park known as Champ de Mars which is in the 7th arrondissement of Paris in France.
  • The tower was constructed to be the entrance to the World’s Fair in 1889 and took two years to build.
  • It was built by engineer Gustave Eiffel whose innovative design has led to his name going down in the history books. Many said that a structure of this size simply couldn’t be built. I assume that motivated him even more.
  • The Eiffel Tower is 1063 feet tall (324m) which makes it about 75 stories tall (14ft per story).
  • On average, about 7 million people visit the tower per year making it one of the most visited (ticketed) buildings on Earth. It was constructed to display France’s engineering prowess at the World’s Fair and beyond. Today, it has become the emblem of Paris.
  • Mountain Climbers: Apparently when the city decided to add more lights to the tower, approx 20,000 lights, they hired mountain climbers to scale the tower and attach them. I wonder what the electricians union thought about that?
  • The tower is host to three levels, two restaurants, and various bars.
  • Le Jules Verne, which is a Michelin star-rated restaurant on the second level of the tower. The second is named Le 58, which is on the tower’s first level, 58 meters from the ground.
  • The absolute top level features a Champagne bar named “Bar A Champagne”. You don’t need a fancy name to sell a class of Champagne on the summit of arguably the world’s most romantic structure.
  • Beyond that, there are multiple buffets, terrace bars, and even a macaroon bar (which makes sense).

Best Time To Visit the Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower on a Beautiful Day

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most visited attractions on Earth with 7 million + visitors per year. Reserving ahead is the key to a positive and stress-free experience. If you can get the tickets, when is the best time to go?

At and after sunset is by far the most attractive time to visit the Eiffel Tower. The tower lights up every hour on the hour after sunset for 5 minutes until 1 am or 2 am depending on the season. The 336 lamps/projectors make the tower light up in a very sporadic fashion which is really a joy to look at.

Do a search for when sunset is the day of your visit and show up 45 minutes before sunset. Book your tickets anytime between 45 minutes before sunset to closure. This way you can see the tower at sunset and go up in the same evening.

You can enjoy the Eiffel Tower during the day as well and watch the light show from the ground at night.

An afternoon at the Eiffel Tower can be really great. The official website advises 1.5 hours for the 1st and 2nd levels and 2.5 hours for all three levels, but you can really stay as long as you like.

Visiting during the day allows you to explore and have a casual meal and or drink while walking around.

Try to get tickets to go up around noon. This way you can have a drink and meal while you are in the tower. If you don’t want to eat buffet food, reserve your tickets for later afternoon. Maybe after 4 pm. This way you can have some drinks on the tower at the end of your day before you get ready for dinner.

April 1 to Oct 31:

From April 1st to Oct 31st, the Eiffel Tower will be extremely hard to reserve. Make sure you reserve in advance to get the entry time you like.

I highly recommend joining a guided tour if you go in the summer. The guides really make the tower come to life and it often includes a sunset cruise on the Seine river. Make sure you read the details to know if the tour you are booking includes that. It is an awesome experience.

Nov 1 to March 31:

With the exception of Christmas, you basically will be able to have your pick on what time to visit the tower. I recommend you go in the afternoon as the temperatures may be warmer.

That said, you are going to want to see it at night evening in the winter. If this is the case, dress warm!

Places To Eat Inside and Nearby the Eiffel Tower

When you visit the Eiffel Tower, you have the option of dining in one of three fantastic restaurants on the Eiffel Tower. We’ve also included a few suggestions for great places to eat nearby, Fore more options, check out our article on the best restaurants near the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Madame Brassiere

book n go travel & tours

This is a great restaurant with views over the Seine. The cuisine is also wonderful thanks to Michelin-star chef Thierry Marx who focuses on sustainable foods.

You can opt to eat in the classy restaurant or sit in the more relaxed lounge that also has great city views and is ideal for an evening drink and appetizers. Coming in the morning? They also serve breakfast that’s worth coming early for.

  • Priority access to 1st level of Eiffel Tower
  • A very high-quality meal crafted by Thierry Marx who received two Michelin stars at Sur-Mesure
  • An experience you will not forget.

For me, it is a no-brainer. If you can plan ahead far enough to get the reservation, you should save the extra money for you and another person to enjoy this experience.

Address: Madame Brassiere

Le Jules Verne

view of Paris from Le Jules Verne restaurant on the Eiffel Tower

The definition of bon vivant is a person who enjoys a sociable and luxurious lifestyle. The photo next to it had better be someone eating a meal at Jules Verne. The restaurant has received 1 Michelin star under all four chefs who have run Le Jules Verne.

Here, a meal will run you €190 – €230 per person for dinner excluding beverages—a five-course and seven-course menu respectively. It might not be for everyone, but if you can you should.

They have a slightly more affordable menu at €105 for lunch excluding beverages for a 3-course tasting menu. Eating at the Jules Verne is a special experience for anyone who can afford it and manages to get a booking.

You can book through their official website. They release timeslots 90 days in advance, so forget about booking a year ahead. You have two choices: the Main Rooms (overlooking the city) and the Alcove (overlooking the interior).

Main Rooms obviously go first, although the website tries to sell the benefits of the Alcove. You can sit down for lunch between 12 to 1:30 pm at 15-minute intervals.

Dinner sit-down times are 7, 7:15, and 7:30 pm. Expect a magnificent 3-hour dining experience for the 5-course menu and longer for the 7-course menu.

Address: Le Jules Verne

Bistrot Buffet

Throughout the 1st and 2nd floors, there are various buffets, snack bars, and shops that will satisfy your hunger or thirst. Exactly what you will expect from a stand-up counter service establishment. Definitely gets the job done.

If you manage to get the coveted ticket to the summit or top tier, definitely put aside a few euros for a glass of champagne. There is a small bar that serves champagne named Champagne A Bar . Very straightforward.

Near the Eiffel Tower

Café de l’Homme : €€€€ | Eiffel Tower Views —You could say this upscale bistro is more about the view than the food but many would say it’s about both. Just across the river located on Place de Trocadéro, this treat would definitely impress that special someone. Be sure to reserve a table with a view in advance or you will only see part of the experience.

Arnaud Nicolas : €€€ | French Cuisine —Enjoy a cut of meat? This institution has earned the most prized awards in France for preparation of pâté and foie gras among other dishes. This is a special meal so make reservations and come hungry.

Hi Tour Guy,

We are thinking of doing a tour mid-April. I am wondering if the Eiffel tower will have scaffolding around it then.

Thank you, Darla

March 10, 2023

Hi Darla, So the Eiffel Tower has been working on the elevators since last year, and they repaint the surface every 7 years and it’s a 3-year process. They’re also prepping for the Olympics next year, so they do have a lot of renovation plans for this year. It’s possible there will be some scaffolding in April and likely in other months. Here is their recent update: https://www.toureiffel.paris/en/news/works/major-work-maintain-tower-future . We’d love to see you there as it will still be an unforgettable experience to stand on the tower in person!
