12 Things To Do and See in BUTUAN CITY

People always said that “In the beginning there was no Philippines but there was BUTUAN”. And that’s what I decided to make a trip to this place to learn about the history and other tourist destinations in Butuan City.

BUTUAN or what they sometimes call BXU is a city full of history and culture. I explore places not just for it’s beauty but I am also very interested about the history of a place. Butuan was once mentioned in the history book that I used for my students and from that moment, I decided that I must visit Butuan and explore it myself.

Where to stay in Butuan? 

Another place you can stay in Butuan is BUTUAN GRAND PALACE HOTEL.  Since I was travelling alone, I have no clue how to get to these places. So the first thing I did was to go to the City Tourism Office located at the Butuan City Hall. Cathy from the City Tourism Office gave me a nice brochure with the different places to visit and also a map where they are located.

I also asked them what is the best way to go around since I was by myself. They told me to take one of the Habal-Habal found at the corner of LIBERTAD. I told the jeepney driver to take me to the CORNER OF BONBON CLOSE TO THE SPORTS COMPLEX. From there, there were so many habal-habal drivers ready to take everyone for a tour. I got one for Php 700.00 for the whole day!

How to get there

From Manila, you can take a direct flight to Butuan City via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines. Travel time is approximately two hours. If you’re coming from Cebu City, it will only take you 30 minutes to arrive at the Bancasi Airport. Meanwhile, if you’re coming from Cagayan de Oro, Surigao, or Davao City, you can take the public bus to Butuan City. You’ll find the Butuan Integrated Bus Terminal in Langihan.

Getting around the city

Travelling around Butuan City entails either tricycle rides or a lot of walking. Tricycle rides cost more or less ₱10 per person. Jeepneys, vans, and mini-buses are also available for you to hop in if you’re travelling to neighbouring towns. Rates vary depending on where you’re travelling to, but usually short distance trips around the province won’t cost you more than ₱100.

Tourism boost seen for Dinagat new sea route with Siargao

BUTUAN CITY—Dinagat Island Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. hopes to anchor the island province to the popularity of Siargao and gain a much-needed tourism boost as a new shorter route connecting the two islands launched earlier this week.

The new route that was launched on Monday, April 22, connects Dinagat Island town of Cagdianao to the ecotourism destination of Del Carmen on Siargao Island. It marks the first regular ferry service that will cater to 120 passengers and will only take one to two hours of travel.

Demerey pointed out that the new sea route is an initiative meant to boost local tourism in the island province of Dinagat by anchoring to the established tourism hub of Siargao, adopting the tagline “Complete your adventure, visit Dinagat Island”—not to compete with Siargao but to link Dinagat to the broader island adventure experience that Siargao offers.

“We copied what Siargao has done so that Dinagat can also become a part of Siargao, that’s why it is ‘Complete your adventure,’ not to compete with Siargao, because we know that tourism in Siargao is really good: they have a nice airport, clear plans, and beautiful surfing spot, making them the surfing capital,” he said.

Anchoring Dinagat Island efforts is the town of Del Carmen, one of the top tourist destinations in Siargao, the second largest commercial port on the island, and one of the busiest domestic airports in Northeastern Mindanao.

Del Carmen Mayor Alfredo Coro II pointed out that the new sea route will open wonderful economic opportunities for both Siargao and Dinagat.

“While Dinagat benefits from accessing Siargao Airport for trade and supply chain of agricultural produce, this will also expand Siargao’s tourism experience with Dinagat’s exciting adventures as a mountainous island province and host to Asia’s largest bonsai forest,” said Coro.

Coro added that small island economies must continue to explore collective and coordinated actions to maximize natural assets to promote sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Ivonnie Dumadag, Regional Director, Department of Tourism (DOT) Caraga Region, said Dinagat has a huge potential, especially since the transport sector is slowly growing for the island province, such as the new sea route with Siargao.

“Connecting Siargao to the island province of Dinagat signals the birth of a new tourism circuit and paves the way for the promotion of lesser-known but similarly beautiful destinations in Caraga Region,” said Dumadag.

“This is the mission of the DOT and Sec. Christina Garcia-Frasco, to promote equitable distribution of income from tourism for inclusive growth. We capitalize on the strength of Siargao, which is primarily its accessibility, and use that strength to help nearby Dinagat Island, which also offers world-class yet pristine natural attractions,” Dumadag added.

Dumadag revealed that the accreditation of accommodations in the island province is not yet at 100 percent, but the DOT regional office is on track and they are working on finalizing the capacity survey.

Dumadag added that Dinagat Island has several tourist destinations that are on a par with some of the best the Philippines has to offer with world-class pristine natural attractions, such as the limestone island and natural lagoon found in the town of Libjo.

Data from DOT Caraga’s tourist arrivals for Dinagat Island reported a total of 22,832 arrivals in 2023, marking a 35.76-percent increase from its record in 2022 with 16,818 tourists.

Siargao recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals in the region for 2023 with a total of 529,822 tourist arrivals, or a 323.56-percent increase from the 125,088 tourist arrivals in 2022.

A local tour operator who requested not to be named pointed out that the new route will hopefully help the island province grow in terms of having mature and environmentally conscious resort destinations as several are yet to obtain proper permits, environmental compliance certification, and proper sanitation system for toilet facilities.

Several Dinagat residents also hope that with more tourists coming to the islands, the expensive rate of visiting beaches on some of the islands will eventually decline, making it accessible to local island residents and backpackers who can’t book ahead with local travel and tours which are known to hike prices for those who just want to visit one of two of the island province tourist destinations.

The boat named MV French of the Nier Shipping Lines was given Special Permit No. 2024-04-042 by Marina; trip schedules are on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday—to depart from Del Carmen at 7 am and then from Cagdianao at 1 pm. For the Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday schedule, it will depart from Del Carmen at 1:30 pm and from Cagdianao at 3 pm.

Boat fares are P350 for regular passengers, P280 for senior citizens, and P175 for children aged 4 to 10.

Planning a European city break on a budget? It’s time to bypass the big hitters like  Paris , Rome and Copenhagen in the west – your money stretches further in the cities of the east.

This fact might not be a new one, but as prices hike in the most beloved urban hubs, consistently low costs for transport, accommodation and meals in eastern destinations mean thrifty travellers should be taking short stays across the Balkans and Baltics more seriously.

With buzzing nightlife scenes, Soviet echoes in the fortified old towns and traditional–meets–modern restaurants serving regional delicacies, cost-effective cultural endeavours scatter the streets and there’s even the option for travel by climate-conscious sleeper trains.

From Bucharest to Belgrade, these cities are rich in sightseeing, history and active pursuits in every season. Here are some of Eastern Europe’s most affordable capitals for a cheap city break.

Bucharest, Romania

In the pre-communist era, the Romania ’s capital was hailed as the ‘Paris of the East’ for its romantic French architecture, and bargain Bucharest certainly offers a different side of Romania than Transylvania’s verdant vampire valleys. Explore the old town, a hub of dining and energetic nightlife complete with busts of Vlad the Impaler, take in the sheer scale of the mammoth Palace of the Parliament – one of the largest buildings in the world – and attend orthodox mass complete with an acapella choir at the Romanian Patriarchal Cathedral to see Bucharest at its best.

Belgrade, Serbia

With a rough charm, bohemian quarters and a Habsburg influence, Belgrade , the Serbian capital, stands where the Danube meets the Sava River. Kalemegdan fortress and park is the historical heart of the city – think restaurants, museums, towers and gates from the Ottoman period – and the neo-Byzantine domes of Sveti Sava temple and art nouveau architecture dominate the Belgrade skyline.

Zagreb, Croatia

An underrated, compact city with early 20th-century grandeur – Croatia ’s capital, Zagreb . Sat beneath Mount Medvednica, the upper town, Gornji Grad, is a maze of medieval cobbles spanning the two hills of Kaptol and Gradec accessible via a 66m funicular. Florida is home to theme parks, sharks, alligators, beaches, but it made ‘most boring’ list

Florida is boring?!

The Sunshine State is home to Disney World and Universal Studios and has hundreds of miles of beaches. We have the oldest city in the U.S. in our backyard and some of the richest people in the world .

To keep life interesting, we even have sharks and alligators .

Apparently, that's not enough.

According to a study by Solitaired , Florida is the fifth most boring state in the United States , based on an analysis of 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions around the world. The analysis was made to determine what locations were the least interesting.

Here's what the study discovered.

According to Solitaired , key takeaways include:

• Branson Scenic Railway in Branson, Missouri, is the most boring attraction in the world.
• Museums comprise 33% of the Top 100 most boring attractions.
• Four LEGOLAND Discovery Centers are in the Top 25 most boring attractions worldwide.
• Georgia is the most boring state, with many attractions and extensive reviews indicating boredom.
• The U.S., Canada and Australia hold the top three spots for countries with the most boring tourist attractions. And yes, U.S. was No. 1.

"We ranked states based on how often attractions were called boring in reviews compared to the total number of attractions with any reviews labeling them boring in that state," Solitaired said. "By this metric, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Tennessee are the nation's top three boring states."

The "boredom score" is on a scale from zero to five.

• Georgia: 21 boring attractions. Boredom score: 5.0
• Massachusetts: 4 boring attractions. Boredom score: 4.1
• Tennessee: 49 boring attractions. Boredom score: 4.1
• Missouri: 33 boring attractions. Boredom score: 3.9
• Florida : 104 boring attractions. Boredom score: 3.5
• Texas: 72 boring attractions. Boredom score: 2.8
• California: 99 boring attractions. Boredom score: 2.7
• Nevada: 33 boring attractions. Boredom score: 2.5
• Minnesota: 7 boring attractions. Boredom score: 2.4

How did Florida rank as 5th most boring state in US?

"With its 104 boring attractions, Florida might seem like the boredom capital at first glance ," Solitaired said.

"Yet, it only ranks as the fifth most boring state because each attraction garners very few yawns from visitors. Despite many attractions being labeled boring by reviewers, this sentiment is such a minority that Florida only pans out as the fifth most boring state."

Methodology used by Solitaired in ranking attractions

Solitaired, an online gaming platform that creates classic games — like Solitaire — with a focus on improving mental acuity, memory and processing speed.  

In March 2024, Solitaired "analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide , spanning 384 cities across 71 countries.

"We focused our analysis on keyword mentions indicative of a bored tourist. Those keywords were "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre," and "tedious.

"We ranked the attractions by the frequency with which tourists mentioned boredom-related keywords, comparing the mentions to the total reviews for each spot."

Attractions with fewer than 2,000 total reviews were removed.
