The old French summer getaway of Boker Hill Station, with its abandoned church and eerie, empty shell of a once-grand hotel, is an easy day trip from town, as are the limestone caves of Phnom Chhnork and Phnom Sorsia both with old temples inside.

Tonlé Sap is Cambodia's most important waterway and Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake.

As well as being an important source of food and a vital tool for Cambodian irrigation, the lake itself is home to 170 floating villages that depend on fishing for their livelihood, with homes built directly on the water.

The houses, shops, churches, schools, and temples of these villages are built on rustic buoy foundations of lashed together barrels and bamboo, and all transport is by boat. They're a fascinating place to spend a day exploring.

One of the most interesting is the sprawling village of Kompong Luong, near the town of Pursat on Tonlé Sap's western shore, although the most popular village to visit is Chong Kneas near Siem Reap.

The Koh Kong Conservation Corridor stretches across an area within Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, south of the border town of Koh Kong in the country's southwest.

The highlands here, home to dense rainforest, winding rivers, and waterfalls, offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and boat tours.

Head to the Tatai River if you want to simply soak up the lush surroundings and take a time out from life. Here, you'll find a handful of boutique eco-resorts scattered along the riverbank all offering activities such as day hikes and kayaking.

Further south in the Cardamoms is the village of Chi Pat, an eco-tourism center with simple homestay and guesthouse accommodation and plenty of activities, ranging from multi-day treks into the forested mountains to wildlife-spotting river boat trips.

Spread along the banks of the mighty Mekong, Kratie has become a major destination for travelers due to its dolphin-watching tours.

The endangered Irrawaddy dolphins are endemic to the Mekong, and environmental measures have now been put in place to try and help their dwindling numbers.

Tourism has played a good role in trying to protect the dolphins by offering an alternative economy to fishing.

To see the dolphins head to Kampi, just north of Kratie, where there are plenty of boat tours available.

This pre-Angkorian temple site dates from the early 7th century when it was the capital of the Upper Chenla Empire.

More than 100 brick temples dedicated to various Hindu gods sit within the forest here, many half-swallowed by mammoth tree roots.

Archaeologically, the site is extremely important, containing some of Cambodia's oldest surviving buildings, but you don't have to be an archaeology buff to appreciate the ethereal beauty of this tree-wrapped site.

The most important temples in the archaeological site include Prasat Sambor, Prasat Tao and Prasat Yeay Peau which all have remarkably clear carvings on their temple walls and plenty of ethereal ambience provided by twisting tree trunks and coiling vines.

For a touch of Indiana Jones-style temple exploring, you can't beat Banteay Chhmar.

This mammoth temple complex sits consumed by surrounding jungle in Cambodia's lonely northwest, providing the perfect opportunity to discover the highlights without the crowds.

It was built by the 12th-century Angkorian king Jayavarman VII, and the remarkable stone reliefs along its walls are some of the most intricately detailed you'll see in the country.

In particular, the spectacular bas reliefs depicting Avalokiteśvara on the south wall and the dizzying array of battle scenes depicted on the eastern walls are prime examples of the Angkorian era's artistry.

The village neighboring the archaeological site has simple homestay accommodation. Otherwise, most people stay in Sisophon (60 kilometers south) or take a day trip to the ruins from Siem Reap.

Adventurous travelers beeline to the hill country of Mundulkiri Province in Cambodia's far east for wildlife spotting, village life, trail-bike tours, and the Elephant Valley Project.

The most famous tourist attraction in the region, the Elephant Valley Project offers visitors a chance to walk with the sanctuary's elephants (no riding allowed) while providing an opportunity for local mahouts (elephant keepers) to earn a wage that doesn't involve overworking their elephants.

For adrenaline-junkies, the Mayura zipline course skims right over the top of Bou Sra waterfall, while bird-watchers and wildlife spotters will want to take a tour into Seima Protected Forest, home to gibbons, the endangered black-shanked douc langurs, and plentiful birdlife.

The small town of Sen Monorom is the main base for travelers in Mundulkiri and within easy day-tripping distance to all of the tourist attractions.

Most visitors who arrive in Cambodia are heading to the Angkor Wat temples as their main destination - so it makes sense that the best time to visit Cambodia is when the temples are at their best. Weather-wise, the best time to visit Siem Reap and Angkor Wat is between December and February, when temperatures drop into the high 20s and the humidity is low enough to be bearable.

However, these months are part of the cool season, which is also high season in the country - this means higher prices, bigger crowds, and more expensive airfares. For better prices and slightly smaller crowds, consider arriving in March or early April - while temperatures are rising fast at this time, the rainy season is just starting by then, so you should be able to still enjoy the outdoors.

Phnom Penh has hot and humid weather all year-round, with just a small dip in temperature and humidity dropping to around 70 percent during the cool season. This is also a good time to visit Koh Rong, Cambodia's best beach destination.

Centuries have passed, but we can still feel the magic of the Khmer era in Cambodia. In the heart of South East Asia, the Land of the Khmers is the sort of country that captures the hearts of those who visit and never lets go.

The Mekong River courses throughout, connecting the north to south. As you travel, you’ll see the landscape change and change fast. Bookended by sparkling ivory beaches and towering jungle peaks is an ancient culture that defies imagination.

The stunning temples of Angkor are the obvious draw for most tourists, but there are many other things to do in Cambodia: tropical beaches, colonial buildings and an abundance of natural sights.

But it’s not just the tourist attractions in Cambodia that make a visit to this Southeast Asian country so rewarding. It’s the smiles of those who live there. It’s the richness of their food. It’s the culture that stems from a reign that brought the world some of the most remarkable temples.

18. Beng Mealea

The first of our favorite temples is Beng Mealea. Just over an hour northeast of Siem Reap, Beng Mealea is a giant complex. Where other temples have fought against the surge of nature, this temple has all but been swallowed up by the jungle.

It creates a literal Indiana Jones experience for all who visit. It’s based on the same plans as the famous Angkor Wat and is also surrounded by a vast moat.

Built in the 1100s, it’s a portal back to the time of the Khmer. Just outside of the complex are remnants of ancient roads, including bridges. The engineering is equally captivating inside, including the main tower, barays, and libraries.

17. Koh Rong

All this adventure, the sites and history would wear down even the most seasoned traveler. If you’re looking to kick back for a day or two and reset, then be sure to add a trip to Koh Rong.

Upon arrival to the coastal town of Sihanoukville, take a ferry to the small island. You’ll arrive at the aptly named White Beach. The vibe then splashes over you and you’ll know you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

You can rent scooters to get around the island fairly quickly. But you’ll want to stop at each beach you see. Some can stretch up to 14 kilometers. Add on a trip to Sok San Waterfall and you’ll feel in heaven.

16. Chi Phat

Deep in the Cardamom Mountains, Chi Phat is a remote traditional village. It’s a wonderful place to experience that helps you discover and understand the country outside of the major attractions in Cambodia.

The town operates under the protection of an ecotourism project that allows locals to improve their lives. This is without having to depart from their heritage and culture.

Surrounded by mountains, sprawling mangroves and flowing rivers, the landscape is something to behold. A trip along the Stung Proat River will confirm that. However, time spent riding through the village opens will be something you remember most from your Cambodian adventure as you interact with locals, learn about their culture and enjoy the local cuisine.

15. Pub Street, Siem Reap

You’ve come to Siem Reap to experience the magic of Angkor. But at night, there’s no point sitting still. Instead, head to Pub Street, where you can take part in arguably the best nightlife scene in Cambodia.

Bustling crowds gather here are the sun falls across northern Cambodia. Yes, it’s touristy. But travelers from across the globe, and plenty of locals too, gather on a nightly basis to share tales of the day gone.

The street is covered in bright neon. The atmosphere is equally electric. Bars and restaurants trade places, shops sell goods into the late hours and the Night Market is just around the corner.

14. Battambang Bat Caves

Cambodia is a land of cultural and natural wonders. The Battambang Bat Caves are, of course, a natural wonder, yet they’re enveloped in cultural mythology.

Each evening, as the sun reaches the horizon, millions of bats burst out into the skies. The beaming rapture of black contrasts with the mix of oranges and purples. It’s an enthralling sight. However, the caves are a short jaunt from the killing fields of Phnom Sampeau, leaving some to believe the bats are the souls of those who died. It’s a fascinating historical and spiritual connection.

For the best view of the bats, head up into the mountains behind them for a breathtaking experience.

In southern Cambodia, Kampot lies in opposition to the busy streets of Phnom Penh. But this sleepy, dusty town home to the Kampot River provides an authentic experience which many travelers seek.

Small and irrevocably charming, Kampot presents a lovely collection of both traditional architecture and French colonial designs. Among them all are homely guesthouses, genuine local cuisine and residents simply going about their daily lives.

Its diminutive size makes it a great place to explore on a bike. On two wheels go from market to market, explore plantations and cool off with a dive into the Kampot River.

12. Choeung Ek Memorial

Under the reign of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia went through a four-year period of unimaginable horror. Mass graves were dug, schools became torture prisons and the exact number of deaths can merely be speculated.

The Choeung Ek Memorial ensures these events are remembered. The memorial is a Khmer-inspired Buddhist stupa and mausoleum that stands in the center of the infamous Killing Fields, where approximately 1.7 million lost their lives. This number could easily be more.

Combine this experience with the equally provoking visit to the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum. Day tours can take you to both. Such was the recent nature of these events, that the memories and stories remain fresh for those that lived through them.

11. Ta Prohm

It’s an odd thing that an 850-year-old temple can jump back into the worldwide consciousness because of a movie. But that’s exactly what happened to Ta Prohm, aka the “ Tomb Raider Temple ”.

Encased in equally ancient root systems and towers that are quickly entering “ruin” territory, there’s something eerily magical about Ta Prohm. Its age is appropriately on display, allowing visitors to sense just how much time has passed since it was first completed.

Ta Prohm is a combo of incredible engineering and the sheer might of Mother Nature, with both now having their time in the sun. As you explore, you’ll still be able to discover the many towers, enclosed courtyards where thousands once gathered.

Bas-reliefs dance among the moss, branches and leaves, while corridors draw you further into the maze-like complex.

10. Tonle Sap

As the largest freshwater lake in Cambodia, Tonle Sap is a vital waterway. Providing irrigation to the surrounding farms and food countrywide, it’s arguably Cambodia’s heartbeat.

Along the shorelines of the enormous lake are over 150 floating villages. The colorful homes bobble on the lake, with the backyard being their main source of food and income. The back porches link to short piers and fishing boats that come and go in the early hours.

Despite the complications from their position, these villages have expanded into vast communities. As you explore, you’ll stumble upon schools, shops, churches and even temples.

The best way to appreciate the sheer size of the lake and the villages it supports is to take a boat trip. Choose between the fascinating Kompong Luong on the western banks or head north to the vibrant Chong Kneas.

9. Preah Vihear

A long, uphill climb stands between you and the historic gates of Preah Vihear. Encased in spectacular winged walls, narrow hallways with a balustrade of windows, you’ll soon forget all about the hike. Ancient archways then guide you down passageways where carvings of warriors and gods are laid out in mesmerizing detail.

Its remote position creates a distinct aura, separate from those in Angkor. Cambodia’s jungle landscape is inevitable, and it combines with the temple’s location to have you feel miles from anything.

The views, too, are just as memorable as you stand in the heart of the Dangrek Mountains, looking down at your kingdom below. You could even gaze into neighboring Thailand. Such was the proximity to Thailand. Both nations claimed Khmer’s highest shrine as theirs.

8. Silver Pagoda

Set inside Phnom Penh ’s Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda is an elegant temple, otherwise known as Wat Preah Keo. The pagoda received its moniker thanks to the 5 tons of silver at its base. The shine immediately captures your attention.

As you wander closer, you’ll see several of the 5,000 gleaming tiles that cover the base. Most are covered for protection, leading you to wonder just how spectacular it would be completely unveiled.

After making your way up the Italian marble staircase, you’ll head inside, where opulent statues welcome you. The most memorable is the Emerald Buddha, a crystal sculpture that stands on a gilded pedestal.

7. Spot the Irrawaddy dolphins

Cambodia has wonders of the ancient world but also plenty of the natural kind. In Kratie, along the Mekong River, you can see the beloved Irrawaddy dolphins in the wild.

These dolphins have unique personalities. They’re unlikely alongside the boats and they can be quite shy. But if you spot them, you’ll notice they’re full of expression. Tours take you along the Mekong towards the Kampi Rapids, where you’ll need to keep your spidey senses alert to spot these beautiful creatures.

Patience is key, and the best time to visit is in the early afternoon. They come and go with great speed, so it’s handy to have a camera with a good zoom and quick shutter.

Deep in the heart of Koh Ker stands an architectural gem that has stood the test of time. The ancient, 10th century Koh Ker Temple once marked the capital of the Khmer empire and is a veritable journey back to the 900s.

The serene complex is an enriching adventure that showcases a unique blend of Hindu and Khmer styles. Pyramid buildings are a clear difference to the Angkor region, divulging a shift between the different eras.

Deities and mythological figures are displayed in bas-reliefs. These tell stories even older than the temples, while central temples provide epic views of the surrounding jungle.

5. Banteay Srei

As the sun climbs over the Angkor complex , it splashes against the rose-colored sandstone of Banteay Srei. This early morning light showcases the ancient complex as it was at its height. The smooth, inviting colors provide Banteay Srei with a captivating charm.

This temple is about an hour north of Siem Reap, close to Phnom Kulen National Park. Compared to Bayon and Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei is much smaller. But therein lies the appeal. The incredible detail shines through evoking a longing to further understand both the process and the culture behind it all.

Everything used to create the temple from the sandstone to the bas-reliefs is meticulous. The best example being the evocative shrines of Shiva and Vishnu.

4. Elephant Valley Project

For travelers, ethical elephant riding is a bit of an oxymoron. While the experience was once popular, times have certainly changed. And for the better. But there are still ways to have that classic South East Asia elephant experience at Mondulkiri’s Elephant Valley Project.

The sustainable organization helps to re-home and rehab overworked elephants and those searching for a retirement home. Spanning an enormous sanctuary in northeastern Cambodia, visitors can discover the important work that has led to the “walking with the herd” project.

Rather than ride the elephants, you can walk among them as you explore a vast mountain valley in unison. It’s an emotional experience that combines the region’s natural beauty with one of the world’s best gentle giants. Among it all, you can learn about the indigenous Bunong culture.

3. Otres Beach, Sihanoukville

There are some amazing beaches in Cambodia , especially considering its relative lack of coastline. At the top of the list for travelers seeking some sun-soaked sand is Otres Beach.

Otres Beaches stares out into the Gulf of Thailand and is based along Cambodia’s Riviera. Its golden sands inspired travelers to flock to Sihanoukville and saw the development of the region’s first resorts.

But don’t worry. Towards the southeastern end of the beach, charm and beauty remain. The warm waters splash against the ivory sand where low-key guest houses provide travelers with a chance to recharge their batteries.

For me, the most amazing and beautiful place in Cambodia is Ratanakiri Province. It’s so natural still. The main attraction there is Yeak Laom Lake, crater lake, located in 4000 years old volcano crater. Water is crystal clear and much colder so it’s a great place for swimming and longer relax. From the Yeak Laom Lake, there is a road to Ou’Sean Lair Waterfall (one of the biggest waterfalls in Cambodia) and two other waterfalls Katieng and Kachanh. At Katieng waterfall living also elephants. Ratanakiri Province, it’s also a place where we can find Zircon mines. The weather is colder so it’s a great place for longer relax.

I was at Angkor Wat temple in June of 2016. It was absolutely amazing and beautiful. I recommend this destination for anyone that is going to the Siem Reap area.

The Top 10 Tourist Attractions In Cambodia That You Have To See

As it slowly recovers from the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror, Cambodia is becoming a rising tourist destination. The stunning temples of Angkor are the obvious draw for most visitors, but the country has plenty more to offer including tropical beaches, colonial buildings, and an abundance of natural attractions. Here is a look at what to see in Cambodia.

Anglor Wat Temple

By far the top Cambodian tourist attraction, Angkor was the Khmer Empire’s capital city, which flourished between the 9th and the 15th centuries. Today, the city is in picturesque ruins, nestled amid forests and farmland near Siem Reap .

Over 1,000 temples are located here ranging in size from piles of rubble in the rice fields to the magnificent Angkor Wat , which rises over three tiers to a height of 669 feet and is the world’s largest single religious monument; it inspires and mesmerizes all who visit. Arrive before dawn to catch the sunrise over this magnificent structure. The entire architectural complex has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Banteay Srei

Considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkorian art, and sometimes known as the “Art gallery of Angkor”, Banteay Srei is a 10th century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple is cut from stone of a pinkish hue and includes some of the finest stone carving anywhere on earth.

Begun in 967 CE, it is one of the smallest sites at Angkor, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in stature. It is wonderfully well preserved, and many of its carvings are three-dimensional.

Koh Ker Temple

Koh Ker is a remote archeological site in northern Cambodia about 75 miles away from the city of Siem Reap. It was one of the most significant settlements during the Khmer rule and briefly served as the capital of the Khmer Empire. Some magnificent monuments were constructed here. The predominant one being Prasat Thom, a superb pyramid that rises 98 feet into the air.

Unlike the temples of Angkor Wat, the temples of Koh Ker are dispersed within dense forests with little human population in and around the site. Many of the temples are hidden under dense overgrowth or are too dangerous to be accessed because of the presence of landmines in the area.

Irrawaddy Dolphin

Kratié is a quiet former French colonial market town in eastern Cambodia, standing on the banks of the Mekong River . Its marketplace is still at its core, surrounded by French colonial structures. The town is famous for being home to the Irrawaddy Dolphins . Increasingly an endangered species, these incredible creatures have lived here for centuries and have a symbiotic relationship with the local fishermen, helping them to trap fish. It is estimated that there are only about 80 dolphins left here.

5. Bokor Hill Station

In the early 1920s, the Bokor Hill Station, located on Bokor Mountain in the Preah Monivong National Park, was a popular luxury summer retreat for French colonists wishing to escape the oppressive heat of Phnom Penh . It was abandoned in the 1940s because of the Japanese invasion and again in the 1970s during Pol Pot’s violent Khmer Rouge Regime.

Nowadays, it is a ghost town but most of the buildings are still standing. It features several French colonial buildings including a royal residence, church, casino, and hotel. Its strategic importance is underlined by the fact that the Cambodian authorities still maintain a ranger station on the site.

Silver Pagoda

6. The Silver Pagoda

Known by the official name of Wat Ubosoth Ratanaram, the Silver Pagoda stands within the grounds of the Royal Palace in the heart of Phnom Penh. It takes its name from the 5000 silver tiles which cover its floor. It houses two of the most important statues of Buddha in the country, the 17th century crystal Buddha and a life-sized Maitreya Buddha, encrusted with 9584 diamonds.

The interior walls of the pagoda courtyard are decorated with a mural of the Ramayana myth which was painted by 40 Khmer artists in between 1903 and 1904. The Silver Pagoda currently serves not only as a tourist attraction, but its grounds are also being used for various royal and national ceremonies.

7. Tonlé Sap

Tonlé Sap refers to a wetland area comprising the seasonally inundated freshwater lake of Tonlé Sap and the 75-mile-long Tonlé Sap River, both of which are part of the vast floodplain of the Mekong River. The lake has the distinction of making a dramatic transformation every year. In the dry season it has a maximum depth of just three feet and an area of around 1,000 square miles.

However, when the monsoon rains come it swells dramatically to a depth of 30 feet and a total area of 6,200 square miles. The Tonle Sap River changes the direction of its flow twice a year due to the seasonal effect of this sheer volume of water. The lake is home to floating villages, the Mekong giant catfish, which is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish, and a significant population of several reptile species including many species of freshwater snakes.

A large number of migratory birds visit the lake including the spot-billed pelican, the greater adjutant, Bengal florican, and the grey-headed fish eagle, among others. Due to its ecological significance, the region has been designated as a biodiversity hotspot and has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1997.

8. Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is a coastal Cambodian city and the country’s number one beach resort. An almost uninterrupted stretch of sweeping white sand beaches, crystal clear seas and coastal marshlands, with a unique biodiversity, have been the reason behind the transformation of this once-quiet fishing port into a major seaside resort in recent years. Many new hotels have been built as the area grows to keep up with the tourism demands. The Ou Trojak Jet is the only navigable river in Sihanoukville.

9. Preah Vihear

Of all the Khmer temples, this one, situated upon a 1722-foot-high cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains in the province of Preah Vihear, commands the best location. This beautiful temple offers the most spectacular view over the adjacent countryside. The Preah Vihear was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

10. Siem Reap

Siem Reap is the capital city of Cambodia’s Siem Reap Province and serves as the gateway to the Angkor Wat. The city also has attractions of its own including colonial and Chinese-style buildings; museums, including Angkor National Museum and the Cambodia Landmine Museum; cultural villages, traditional handicraft shops, silk farms, and more. The Apsara traditional dance performances, and Phare − the Cambodian Circus, are also popular attractions for tourists visiting Siem Reap.

5. Koh Ker: The Temple With A Legend

It can’t be denied that the impressive collection of ancient temples and monuments at Angkor Archaeological Park is a must on all itineraries to Cambodia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains the magnificent relics and religious structures of different capitals of the Khmer Empire, which flourished from approximately the 9 th to 15 th centuries. Tonlé Sap refers to a wetland area comprising of the Tonlé Sap Lake, a seasonally inundated freshwater lake, and a 120 km long river, the Tonlé Sap River. The Tonlé Sap is thus a part of the vast floodplain of the Mekong River. The water volume of the lake varies significantly throughout the year. The lake and the river support diverse inter-connected ecoregions and a great amount of biodiversity. At least 149 fish species including 11 threatened species are housed here. A large number of migratory birds also visit the wetland. Some of the most notable birds seen here include the spot-billed pelican, the greater adjutant, Bengal florican, the grey-headed fish eagle, etc. The Tonlé Sap also hosts a significant population of several reptile species including many species of freshwater snakes. The Mekong giant catfish, one of the world’s largest freshwater fish, lives in the Tonlé Sap. Due to its ecological significance, the region has been designated as a biodiversity hotspot and a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1997.

Among the statues, the most famous one is a small, green crystal Buddha statue and a life-size gold statue of the Maitreya Buddha. The latter weighs around 90 kg and is decorated with 9584 diamonds. The Silver Pagoda is also inlaid with over 5,000 silver tiles and Italian marble structures on its outer facade. The Silver Pagoda currently serves not only as a tourist attraction but also its grounds are being used for various royal and national ceremonies of the country.

5. Bokor Hill Station

The Bokor Hill Station was once a popular hill station for French colonists in Cambodia. The hill station is located at the top of the Bokor Mountain in the Preah Monivong National Park. It is now a ghost town that is popular amongst tourists, as it features several French colonial buildings including a royal residence, church, casino, and hotel. In the early 1920s, the French colonists would enjoy the hill station as a luxury summer retreat. Today, modern buildings have come up in the region and several films like the City of Ghosts (2002) and the R-Point (2004) have been filmed here.

Kratié is a small town located in eastern Cambodia and is the capital of the Kratié Province of the country. The town houses a population of about 38, 215 people and is located on the banks of the Mekong River. Many people visit this quiet and peaceful Cambodian city to enjoy its scenic beauty and unique culture. The central marketplace of the city is surrounded by French colonial structures. Big islands with white sand beaches are located on the Mekong flowing by the town. If one is lucky, one can get a rare sighting of the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River near Kratié .

For the more adventurous tourists visiting Cambodia, Koh Ker is a perfect choice. Unlike the temples of Angkor Wat, the temples of Koh Ker are dispersed within dense forests with little human population in and around the site. Koh Ker is a remote archeological site in northern Cambodia about 120 km away from the city of Siem Reap. Of the many monuments present here, only about two dozen are visited by tourists. The rest of the temples are hidden under dense overgrowth or are too dangerous to be accessed because of the presence of land mines in the area. Koh Ker was one of the most significant settlements during the Khmer rule. It briefly served as the capital of the Khmer Empire during the rule of the kings Jayavarman IV and Harshavarman II. Jayavarman IV contributed the most towards the development of the site and had a water tank and 40 temples constructed here during his rule. The Koh Ker has been a part of the UNESCO tentative world heritage list since 1992.

2. Banteay Srei

The Banteay Srei is a Cambodian temple that is often praised as the "jewel of Khmer art.” It is extremely popular among tourists who visit the site to marvel at its beauty. The Banteay Srei is a temple of the 10th century that is located near the Phnom Dei hills in the Angkor area. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, a Hindu god. Built of red sandstone, the building is elaborately carved.

Angkor was the Khmer Empire’s capital city that flourished between the 9th and the 15th centuries. During its peak in 1010 to 1220, Angkor was a megacity that supported 0.1% of the global population. Today, the city is in ruins but is most famous for the grand Hindu temple complex of the Angkor Wat. The picturesque ruins of Angkor are nestled amid forests and farmland near the Siem Reap city of Cambodia. Over 1,000 temples are located here ranging in size from piles of rubble amidst the rice fields to the magnificent Angor Wat, the world’s largest single religious monument. The entire architectural complex has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by millions of tourists each year.

The beauty spots ruined by tourists (and the undiscovered alternatives)

A staircase in Hawaii leading to a popular beauty spot is being demolished, after tourists persisted in using the steps that have been off-limits for more than 35 years.

The Haiku Stairs, also known as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’, were built during World War II to provide pedestrian access across the island for the US navy. 

The trail, made up of more than 3,000 steps and climbing to 4,000 feet above sea level, officially closed to the public in 1987, but tourists have defied “no trespassing” signs in order to reach one of the best viewpoints on Oahu island .

The Haiku Stairs have become particularly popular in recent years since the rise of social media platforms: the hashtag #haikustairs has been used more than 63,000 times on Instagram.

In 2021, the local council on Oahu island voted unanimously to remove the stairs. In April 2024 it was announced demolition would begin later in the month, a project which will cost US$2.6 million (£2.08 million).

“Due to rampant illegal trespassing, [the] Haiku Stairs is a significant liability and expense for the city, and impacts the quality of life for nearby residents,” Honolulu City Council member Esther Kiaʻāina told Hawaii News Now.

“This decision was predicated upon our respect for the people who live in and around the entrance to the stairs, our respect for our ʻāina [land and sea], and our respect for both the future and the past history of the culture of the Haʻikū community,” said Mayor Blangiardi.

There are, of course, corners of Hawaii that have not been affected by tourism in a negative manner. The Telegraph’s Chris Leadbeater suggests Lanai .

“Spare a thought (because many don’t) for Lanai – which is only the sixth largest of the eight main islands, and often overlooked. This is a shame, because Polihua Beach is lovely, and the quieter vibe makes for holiday heaven,” he writes. 

Sadly, the Haiku Stairs isn’t a standalone example of a natural attraction or piece of historic engineering closing due to a rise of tourist footfall.

From a paradise beach in Thailand to a canyon in Iceland , these are the beauty spots that closed to the public and the lesser-known alternatives, welcoming visitors with open arms.

Maya Bay, Thailand

After the release of the 2000 hit film, The Beach , Maya Bay on Ko Ph Phi Le island went on to become one of Thailand’s most popular tourist attractions.

By the mid 2010s as many as 6,000 tourists arrived per day, who contributed to the environmental degradation of the bay with litter, tourist boats and sun cream destroying the coral reef.

To allow for a period of environmental restoration, in 2018 local authorities took the bold step to close the beach, with no set end date.

Maya Bay eventually fully reopened to the public in 2022 , after the pandemic lockdowns, with new rules in place.

Today, boats can no longer dock in the bay, visitor numbers are capped at 3,000 per day between 10am and 4pm only, and there is now a designated part of the bay for swimming.

The alternative: Sok San beach, Cambodia

There are plenty of white sand beaches with turquoise waters across southeast Asia, but without the party crowds or the sunbathing masses.

Writing for The Telegraph , Sean Thomas describes Sok San beach in Cambodia as comprising “seven long, idyllic kilometres of angelically soft white sand shaded by swaying palms and bathed by gentle surf cleverly warmed to a soul-soothing 29.3C.

“The obvious comparison for a beach as world class as this is the Maldives , Thailand or Polynesia – and there’s the rub. In all those places you’d be looking at an island rammed with development, making the most of the sand, the sea, the effortless blue skies.

“Here, in Cambodia, that development hasn’t happened.”

Fjadrárgljúfur Canyon, Iceland 

The Icelandic Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon hit the headlines after featuring in the music video for the Justin Bieber track, I’ll Show You , in 2015.

To date, the video has received more than 520 million views, and evidently some Bieber fans have been inspired to see it for themselves. After an explosion of interest in the canyon, in 2019 the Environmental Agency of Iceland announced it would close the site for all but five weeks of the year.

Speaking at the time, Daníel Freyr Jónsson from the Environment Agency of Iceland directly linked the overtourism issues with the music video.

“This gorge used to be fairly little known,” he told RUV, Iceland’s public service broadcaster. “But I think Icelanders have known about it for much longer.

“The great increase in foot traffic there began after Bieber came. There has been an increase of 50 per cent to 80 per cent between the years 2016, 2017 and 2018.” 

The canyon has since closed intermittently, to allow park authorities to restore damaged pathways and to keep tourists at bay during periods of dangerous wintry weather.

The alternative: North Iceland

Most British tourists visiting Iceland typically stick to the so-called “Golden Triangle” around Reykjavik, or the southern coast, which has impressive beaches and a milder climate.

However, Richard Waters argues that people should consider exploring Iceland’s quieter, wilder far north : “With a carpet of freshly fallen snow blanketing silent Siglufjörður, I drive back to Akureyri through tunnelled mountains, along the coast and across the bottle-green interior, and wonder where everybody has gone,” he writes.

“At 39,000 square miles, Iceland is a little smaller than Cuba and much of its 340,000-strong population is based in the south.

“No wonder you quickly feel that it’s just you, the rugged elements and those hardy, chocolate-coloured horses.”

Walker Canyon, California

In February 2019, the hillsides of Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore became something of a social media sensation. When thousands of bright orange poppies cloaked the landscape (in local parlance, a “superbloom”), Instagrammers travelled to the area to capture a photograph.

Local officials complained of “Disneyland size crowds” and brandished the event a #PoppyNightmare on social media channels. Nearby roads were clogged with traffic, and some visitors resorted to parking on the highway and completing their journey on foot.

Anticipating another superbloom event, in February 2023 the city of Lake Elsinore closed Walker Canyon Road and erected no-parking signs on streets, with police officers on patrol. Officials took the same measure this year.

The Regional Conservation Authority of Western Riverside County warned in early March: “Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore, known in the region for its beautiful landscapes, is temporarily closed to ensure the public’s safety and protect sensitive habitat.

“During this time, the public is urged to avoid the area and obey posted signs.”

The alternative: Las Trampas Regional Park

On the other end of California , Las Trampas Regional Park has an abundance of open space (5,778 acres). 

In spring time its sloping hillsides are carpeted with a rich variety of wildflower, including those Instagrammable Californian poppies.

Visit Tri-Valley California writes: “Las Trampas Regional Park has so much open space that it is one of the most popular places in the Tri-Valley to take your dog on off-leash hikes.”

Mount Everest Base Camp, Tibet

In February 2019, China closed access to Everest base camp on the Tibetan side of the mountain, after a mounting waste problem. Only people with climbing permits were allowed at the camp, meaning tourists could only get as far as a monastery at 5,200m (17,060ft), just below base camp.

The Chinese Base Camp, which is accessible by car, had risen in popularity in the years leading up to its closure – with 40,000 visitors reported in 2015.

The Nepalese Base Camp can only be reached on foot – a hike which typically takes up to two weeks.

The alternative: The Trans Bhutan Trail

Why not dodge Everest entirely, and consider a trip to Bhutan instead ?

Michelle Jana Chan writes: “An ancient kingdom and a fresh-faced democracy, Bhutan continues to value cherished traditions, such as Buddhist rituals, national dress and the vernacular architecture of painted and carved wooden farmhouses.

The country perfectly combines trekking with cultural experiences, including visits to Buddhist temples, monasteries and nunneries, precariously built on cliff edges, in part hewn from rock.”

What you need to know before visiting Cambodia: health care, currency, and culture

Cambodia is considered one of the friendliest countries in Southeast Asia . Thanks to an unbreakable spirit and infectious optimism, the Khmers have prevailed. No visitor comes away without a measure of admiration and affection for the inhabitants of this enigmatic kingdom. 

General health is more of an issue here than in many other parts of Southeast Asia, due to a lack of international-standard medical-treatment facilities, a prevalence of tropical diseases, and poor sanitation. Once you venture into rural areas you are on your own, although most provinces have a reasonable clinic for minor health problems.

Cambodia is generally a very safe country to visit, but occasional crimes and scams do happen so it is best to minimize the risks where possible. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning once again, this guide can help you plan the essentials for your trip.

Cambodia's use of currency can be confusing 

Cambodia’s official currency is the riel (4000r = US$1). The US dollar is used as a parallel currency and accepted everywhere, although small change may arrive in riel. Just to confuse matters, in towns bordering Thailand Thai baht (B) is also accepted.

Get yourself a  krama  as soon as you arrive

Purchase a krama , a traditional Cambodian checked scarf, as soon as you arrive – it's a multipurpose travel towel that the locals use in a multitude of ways. The primary use is protection from the sun, dust, and wind, but you can also use it as a quick cover-up sarong-style, to towel yourself down after a dip in the pool, and as a makeshift pillow. Essentially the list is as long as your imagination and it takes up virtually no space in your backpack compared to the multiple equivalent products it dupes.

Pack lightweight gear and casual clothes for Cambodia

Lightweight and loose-fitting clothes are the best plan in Cambodia, including cottons and linens to combat the humidity. Cambodia is not a particularly dressy place unless you're spending time at high-end bars and clubs in  Phnom Penh or Siem Reap , so smart clothes are rarely a necessity. If heading to the upland northeast in November to March, pack a warm top for the cool nights. 

What to pack

• Lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect the sun
• Comfortable sandals or shoes
• Refillable water bottle
• Powerful sunscreen and long-lasting deodorant
• Earplugs to block out the noise
• Unlocked mobile phone for use with a Cambodian SIM card (roaming charges are very expensive, it’s worth buying a cheap SIM upon arrival)
• A light raincoat if traveling in the wet season.

There is some important etiquette to keep in mind

Cambodian people are very gracious hosts, but there are some important spiritual and social conventions to observe.

Always be respectful at a Buddhist site 

When visiting temples, cover up to the knees and elbows, and remove shoes and any head covering when entering temple buildings. Sit with your feet tucked behind you to avoid pointing them at Buddha images. It's also good to leave a small donation. Women should never touch a monk or his offering bowl – the Buddhist faith believes it is contrary to a monk's sacred vows to be in close proximity to a woman that isn't a relative.

Use the local greeting when meeting new people

Called the sompiah , the local greeting in Cambodia involves putting your hands together in a prayer-like manner. Use this when introduced to new Khmer friends. When beckoning someone over, always wave towards yourself with the palm down.

Bargaining is expected in markets and for transportation

It's important to haggle in markets in Cambodia, otherwise, the stallholder may "shave your head" (local vernacular for "rip you off"). Negotiation is also the rule when arranging share taxis, pickups, and local transportation like tuk tuks if ordering in person and not via a ride-hailing app. The Khmers are not ruthless hagglers, so a persuasive smile and a little friendly quibbling are usually enough to get a price that's acceptable to both you and the seller.

It's important to dress modestly 

Avoid wearing swimsuits or scant clothing around towns in Cambodia, even in beach destinations. Wear a sarong or krama to cover up.

Tipping is appreciated

Tipping is not essential but is commonplace in establishments catering to tourists such as hotels and restaurants, and it is standard practice to tip tour guides and drivers on organized tours. 

Local health care in Cambodia is basic

Do not visit Cambodia without medical insurance. Hospitals are very basic in the provinces and anyone who has a serious injury or illness while in Cambodia may require emergency evacuation to Bangkok. If you fall seriously ill in Cambodia you should head to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, as these are the only places in the country with decent emergency treatment. 

Pharmacies in the larger towns are remarkably well stocked and you don’t need a prescription to get your hands on anything from antibiotics to antimalarials. 

When it comes to tap water, play it safe and avoid it where possible. Bottled water is widely available in Cambodia and many hotels and guesthouses have refill tanks. Ice is generally fine to use, as it is produced in bottled water factories around the country, a legacy of the French colonial period.

Elephant rides are not recommended

Though not yet illegal in Cambodia, elephant rides have been repeatedly called out by animal welfare groups as cruel and painful for the animal – some private companies are finally rethinking the practice . Do your research to ensure any animal sanctuary you'd like to visit is ethical and prioritizes the welfare of the inhabitants.  

Stay safe in Cambodia with these top tips

The most common crime is bag or mobile-phone snatching, usually perpetrated by thieves on motorcycles. Smartphones are a particular target, so avoid using your phone on the side of the street, especially at night. Walking or riding alone late at night is not ideal, as there have been several incidents of solo women travelers being assaulted in isolated areas, usually after dark.

Most scams are fairly harmless, involving a bit of commission here and there for local drivers. There have been one or two reports of police set-ups in Phnom Penh, involving planted drugs, but these seem very rare and usually involve business owners. Beware the Filipino blackjack scam – don't get involved in any gambling with seemingly friendly folks unless you want to part with plenty of cash.

There is quite a lot of fake medication floating about the region, so only buy prescription drugs from reliable pharmacies or clinics. Be very careful if being offered chemical drugs on the street in Cambodia, as not only are they illegal but may be laced with all sorts of dangerous toxic substances. 

Due to the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in some rural areas, it is essential to stick to marked paths. Keep a close eye on small children in rural areas to make sure they don't stray and do not go off road if you're cycling.

Roads have improved massively in recent years, but conditions can vary widely from the dry to the wet season. Although motorcycles are a popular way to get around in Cambodia, do not attempt it if you're not an experienced driver. The tangled traffic in the big towns and cities is no place for a novice.

Run through this pre-departure checklist before you go

• Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months or you won't be allowed into Cambodia
• Arrange any recommended inoculations at a travel-health clinic
• Purchase travel insurance with decent health coverage
• Double-check to see if you need to arrange a visa before arrival
