History of the Canal
The Cape Cod Canal holds a rich history dating back to its construction in 1914. Originally built for maritime trade and transportation, it has become a beloved recreational destination for boaters, anglers, and nature enthusiasts. The canal is a haven for fishing enthusiasts , offering abundant opportunities to reel in striped bass, bluefish, and other local species.
One of the most remarkable features of the Cape Cod Canal is its unique tidal currents, which change direction twice a day. These powerful currents have shaped the canal’s ecosystem, creating a thriving habitat for marine life.

GET TO KNOW THE CAPE COD CENTRAL RAILROAD
Cape Cod Central Railroad is part of Cape Rail, Inc., which also includes the Massachusetts Coastal Railroad “Mass Coastal.” Cape Rail covers approximately 100 miles of track between the two railroads. Mass Coastal is a freight line, and the Cape Cod Central is a heritage, passenger railroad that operates primarily on 27 miles of former New Haven Railroad tracks on Cape Cod.
GUESTS RAVE ABOUT OUR "WONDERFULLY SCENIC" TRAIN RIDES
We did the excursion tour. It was excellent. The Tour had great narration and really gave us a good viewing of the south part of the Cape. The ride was beautiful with salt marshes, birds/nests, cranberry farms, etc.
We had a fantastic experience on this tour. They really make you feel welcome right from the parking lot attendants to the “thank you” as you leave the station. We booked in diamond class which was well worth it. The Cape Codder cocktail was very well made. We also very much enjoyed the tour of the glass factory.
We had a great train ride and got see a lot of Mass that normally wouldn't be seen if not on the train. Host was very informative of the area and the crew were very friendly and helpful. Well worth the time.
My husband and I enjoyed the great ride and fabulous dinner. The food is outstanding. I must admit this is my 1st train ride and it was the best. This excursion takes 3 hours and is well worth the money.
Booked a lunch trip for myself and my partner while we were staying in Cape Cod. We went on a 2 hour journey with a 3 course lunch included in the price. The staff gave us commentary on the local area, while we enjoyed a fantastic lunch. Food was lovely and the staff were all very friendly. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area, and not too expensive.
A nice thing to do while on vacation! We love railroads and this certainly was a nice time! Absolutely a good time for those kids and adults who like trains!

Cape Cod Canal Activities & Attractions
For many years, I was one of those locals who thought of the Cape Cod Canal as a pretty body of water that we crossed over on our way to the mainland.
When I began creating my website, I knew it was time to stop passing over the Canal, and start exploring it. So I grabbed my hubby, we put on our "tourist hats", and off we went to see what the Canal area was all about.
Cape Cod Canal Visitors Center
The really cool thing about this Visitors Center is that it's like a mini-museum and information hub, all in one. In about an hour, we learned more than we ever imagined about the Cape Cod Canal, its history, how it was built, and how it operates today.
The Center is educational, but it's entertaining, too. While Richard tracked transiting boats on a computerized radar display, I took hold of a ships wheel and piloted a vessel under the Sagamore Bridge. Virtually, of course!
We watched a short film about the Canal in the mini-theater, saw fascinating artifacts from construction of the Canal, and got hands-on with the knot tying exhibit.
(I still can't get the hang of that bowline knot - the one where "the rabbit comes up through the hole, runs around the tree, then goes back down into the hole ;-)
The Visitors Center is just a few steps from the Sandwich Marina, and right next door to the Coast Guard station. It's a great place for picnicing and yacht watching, too.
Biking Along The Canal's Access Roads
Flat, paved bike trails, with lots of places to stop for a rest, a picnic, and some sightseeing.
(Next time, maybe we'll bring our fishing rods along for the ride. Or maybe not. It might be a bit of a challenge carrying a 40" Striped Bass while riding a bike!)
The bike paths alongside the Canal are a fantastic place to ride, in-line skate, or walk, no matter what your age, fitness or skill level might be.
Just one little bit of advice: Pay attention to the wind speed and direction before you set out. When the wind is crankin' up, it's a whole lot easier to make the return trip with the wind at your back! The paths are open year-round, free of charge, and are easily accessed from many well-marked locations on both sides of the Canal. Bike rentals are available nearby.
Fishing at the Cape Cod Canal
There's access for fishing on both sides of the Canal, from one end to the other. There's also access for handicapped fishermen at the Scusset Beach fish pier (on the "mainland"), and at the bulkhead area in Sandwich. Grab some live bait or a few new lures at a local bait and tackle shop ... and don't forget to bring your MA saltwater fishing permit !
Organized Recreational Programs
For those of you who prefer organized activities, the US Army Corps of Engineers offers ranger-guided programs, activities and events all summer long.
This summer's schedule has programs for adults and kids including Beach Explorations, Working Waterfront Tours, Junior Ranger and Canal Kids programs, Sagamore Hill Hikes, and lots more.
Many of these activities are free. Dates and times vary, so it's best to contact the Visitor Center at (508) 833-9678 for more info.

Cape Cod Canal Cruises - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)
2024 Cape Cod Canal bridges outlook: More traffic? When will Sagamore, Bourne be replaced?
After news broke in December that the first round of funding had been secured for the replacement of the Bourne and Sagamore bridges , a renewed sense of hope was resurrected for a project long mired in setbacks and uncertainty .
But as U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren , D-Massachusetts, told the Times in December, the initial $372 million of funding underscored the fact that “we still have a long way to go” before the project — estimated to cost around $4.5 billion — sees completion.
In the meantime, a number of other factors, from additional funding to design considerations, need to fall into place before ground can break on the actual replacement. And officials said they expect some noteworthy developments within the next year.
Sagamore Bridge funding and timeline
Kristy Senatori , executive director for the Cape Cod Commission , said funding for the project will be rolled out in phases. On top of the $372 million from the Federal Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant program, money from other grants were applied for as well.
“We look forward to hearing what we hope is good news about the Bridge Investment Program — the $1.07 billion grant request — in the coming months,” Senatori said. “These grant awards will also put a firm timeline on the project, as we anticipate there'll be specific deadlines associated with the grant funding.”
Bourne Bridge 'can't be forgotten'
Senatori said more information in the coming months regarding the phase two Bourne Bridge replacement could also be announced on the back of phase one funding.
“We acknowledge the importance of the strategic decision to initially focus on funding requests for the Sagamore Bridge replacement, but also want to be clear that the Bourne Bridge is important and can't be forgotten,” Senatori said.
Here's how officials hope to secure bridge replacement money
Gov. Maura Healey’s office announced on Aug. 14 an application plan for securing $1.44 billion in federal discretionary grant money for the project. The grants included $150 million from the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects program and $222 million from National Infrastructure Project Assistance . They were closely followed by the Bridge Investment Program , the largest share, at over $1.07 billion.
On Dec. 4, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced a joint application with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeking $1.06 billion in federal funding.
Will the Cape Cod Canal bridges need major rehabilitation before they can be replaced?
The question of whether or not major rehabilitation for the bridges will be required — a costly and time consuming process — has loomed over the project thus far. Cape Cod Commission Deputy Director Steven Tupper said rehabilitation would result in extended lane closures on both bridges and a delay in the ability to secure funding for the project.
“If the bridges are not replaced in an expedient fashion, the Army Corps has indicated major rehabilitation would be necessary,” Tupper said Monday in a meeting of the Metropolitan Planning Organization . “If either of the bridges undergoes a major rehabilitation, it would be full bridge closure for four to six months, and temporary lane closures totaling 12 to 16 months.”
If the replacement project doesn’t commence as expected, rehabilitation would be necessary for the Sagamore in the 2025-2027 timeframe and the Bourne Bridge within the 2029-2031 timeframe, according to a March 2020 report authored by the Army Corps.
The report’s estimated cost for major rehabilitation on both bridges totals around $342 million.
“Any appreciable delay in decision-making or funding could force the Government to pursue major rehabilitation instead of bridge replacement in order to maintain reliability and safety of vehicular traffic over the Canal in the near term,” the report said.
Warren told the Times in December the project could see more necessary funding as soon as spring, but no further funding announcements have been made as of Wednesday.
Environmental considerations for bridge work
Another agency involved in the project is the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office .
The agency, commonly referred to the MEPA office, is tasked with studying the environmental impacts of projects that require state permitting, financial assistance or land disposition. And because the project is being handled by both state and federal agencies, the MEPA review process is being done alongside the National Environmental Policy Act office review.
An environmental notification form was submitted by the state Department of Transportation to the MEPA office in May 2023. Next, a draft environmental impact statement — analyzing impacts to wetlands, climate change, environmental justice protocols and other factors — will be filed and reviewed by the MEPA office.
There are no legal requirements outlining a timeframe the state transportation department is required to compile the draft environmental impact statement within, but an official from the MEPA office said they are required to conduct a 37-day review along with a 30-day period of public comment.
Cape Cod Canal bridges were not designed for 38 million crossings each year
The Cape Cod Canal bridges were designed and built in the 1930s, seeing roughly one million crossings annually, Tupper said. These days, he said that figure has shot up to nearly 38 million, about the same as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco — which is about six times the length and twice the width.
“Things have changed since 1935, certainly an obvious statement,” said Tupper. “Given the way these bridges were designed, it's really a challenge to continue to maintain them.”
In order to combat the peak season traffic and structural deficiencies of the Canal bridges, Tupper said a number of modern design considerations are being hashed out to ensure vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle traffic can traverse the canal with relative ease.
At the moment, the design for a replacement is a twin-arch style bridge with three lanes in each direction, separated by a median divider. There is also a shoulder for future repairs and maintenance, along with a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
“There were a number of different concepts, and this one (the twin-arch) was identified as preferred, and it certainly nods to the look of the existing bridges, but as a modern structure,” Tupper said.

The Mayflower II passed through the Cape Cod Canal around 7:15 a.m. Thursday, as people lined the shore to watch.
The ship, a historic reproduction, is on its way home to Pilgrim Memorial State Park in Plymouth , after a winter spent in dry dock in Mystic, Connecticut for routine maintenance.
The 102-foot wooden vessel did not use its sails for the journey . Instead, it was towed the entire way by Stasinos Marine out of Weymouth. It was expected to be crewed by the Plimoth Patuxet maritime preservation and operations team led by Capt. Whit Perry.

Cape Cod Canal Bikeway Trail
By: Matt Romeo
The Cape Cod Canal Trail is a beautiful biking/walking trail that follows along the North and South side of the Canal that connects Cape Cod Bay and Buzzards Bay. The trail is host to a plethora of outdoor and indoor recreational activities as well as a wide variety of wildlife.
Cape Cod Canal Bike Trail Overview
The trail is free to access and is open from dawn until dusk. It is very flat so it’s a long, but easy walk or bike ride. Feel free to bring your dog along as pets are permitted as long as they are on a leash. At each recreational area there is plenty of parking along with restrooms. If you are driving the address is Canal Service Road Bourne, MA 02532.
If you want to get across the canal, there are two bridges. On the western half of the trail the Bourne Bridge is right next to Bourne Scenic Park. On the eastern half the Sagamore Bridge is next to the Sagamore Recreational Area. The two bridges are about 3.25 miles apart.
North Side (Mainland)
If you are starting on the North side of the path, we recommend that you start at the Buzzard’s Bay Recreational Center. That way you can bike or walk the length of the canal and end your walk with a beautiful view of Cape Cod Bay. While walking along the path you will come across several interesting stopping points.
Bourne Scenic Park
Bournedale Interpretive Trail
This is 1.7 miles out and back trail. It’s a little more strenuous than the Cape Cod Canal Trail itself, but it offers a nice break from the paved path if it is particularly crowded.
Herring Run Recreation Area
This is the mid-point of the South side of the trail. It is where the Herring River connects to the Cape Cod Canal. This is a great spot to stop in the spring as its overs a clear view of the fish ladder that was built to help herring migrate up the river to spawn.
Sagamore Recreation Area
Shortly after the Sagamore Bridge, Sagamore Recreation Area is another stopping point as you head towards Cape Cod Bay. It offers fishing, picnic tables and a restroom.
Sagamore Hill & Fishing Pier
Sagamore Hill can be reached via a 1.7-mile loop trail that offers tremendous views of the canal and the bay. It was named after sagamores, or Native American leaders, who used to meet on top of the hill.
Across from the trail head is a fishing pier. Cape Cod Canal is the home to large sea bass and stripers making it a great location for fishing enthusiasts.
Scusset Beach State Reservation
The South side of the trail comes to an end at Scusset Beach State Reservation. Here you can find 1.5 miles of beach along the Cape Cod Bay. This is a great place to watch ships enter the canal. It also offers 98 R.V. sites that have hook-ups and an additional 5 tent sites. If you park here, you will need to pay $14 if you are a Massachusetts resident or $40 as a non-resident from Memorial Day through November.
South Side (Mainland)
The South Side of the trail offers five recreational areas that offer similar amenities to the recreational areas on the North side. There are no campgrounds on the Southside, but there are some unique sites to visit.
As with the North side, if you are planning on walking the entire path, we recommend starting on the Buzzard’s Bay side of the canal at Tidal Flats Recreational Area and walking east towards Cape Cod Bay.
Recreational Areas
There are five recreational areas on the South Side. From West to East, they are: Tidal Flats Recreation Area, Bourne Recreation Area, Midway Recreation Area, Sandwich Recreation Area, Sandcatcher Recreation Area. They all offer a restroom, a picnic area, and spots for fishing.
Gallo Ice Arena
If you are looking for something fun to do on a rainy day, Gallo Ice Arena offers public skate sessions for only $5 a person, plus $5 skate rentals. Check their website for an updated calendar to see when the sessions are running. The rink is located at 231 Sandwich Road, Bourne, MA 02532 if you are driving or right next to the Bourne Recreation Area if you are walking.
Sandwich Marina
Sandwich Marina is at the East end of the South side of the trail right before Cape Cod Bay. There is a boat ramp located there if you are looking to take your boat out on the bay. It’s $10 to use the boat ramp for the day or $150 for the entire season. They marina also provides a wide array of services. All the information is available on their website .
Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center
The Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center is at the end of the South side of the trail and overlooks Cape Cod Bay. The museum is free to everyone and offers a rich history of the canal. At the museum you can board a retired patrol boat, learn about the canal wildlife, or watch one of several films. You can either visit the museum at the end of the trail to learn about everything that you just saw or start you at the museum to get a preview of what you are about to see.

Mayflower II passes through Cape Cod Canal on its journey to Plymouth
By Neal Riley
Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 3:02 PM EDT / CBS Boston
PLYMOUTH - The Mayflower II is returning to Massachusetts, and you can track its journey home online.
The 67-year-old wooden ship, a replica of the vessel that brought the Pilgrims to America in 1620, departed Connecticut Wednesday morning at about 10:30 a.m. It spent the winter docked at the Mystic Seaport Museum, undergoing routine maintenance and getting a fresh coat of paint.
Mayflower II travels through Cape Cod Canal
The journey from Mystic to Plymouth Harbor takes between 20 and 25 hours, and is dependent on many factors including tide and weather conditions. The Mayflower II passed through the Cape Cod Canal at 7 a.m. on Thursday, and the heavy fog at the time made for a ghostly scene.
Track the Mayflower II
When the Mayflower II leaves from Mystic, towed by the Weymouth-based Stasinos Marine, you can track its journey on this website .
The Plimoth Patuxet Museums' Facebook page will also provide updates.
See the Mayflower II in Plymouth
The 106-foot ship arrived at the State Pier in Plymouth Thursday and it's expected to open up to the public on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Since the Mayflower II landed in Plymouth in 1957, more than 25 million have stepped on board to visit it, the museum says. The replica had $11.2 million worth of repairs finished in 2020.
Tickets to board the Mayflower II are $19 for adults, $17.10 for seniors and $13 for children.
