Cava: Catalan Champagne

Everything you need to know about spain’s own sparkling wine.

Barcelona Life

What Is Cava?

Tasting Tours

Welcome to Cava country! On this page you’ll learn what qualifies as ‘Spanish Champagne’, as well as discovering the traditional bars where it is served in Barcelona, and a number of recommended tasting activities in the nearby Penedes wine region.

What is Cava?

Cava is Catalonia’s very own white (or pink) sparkling wine, made using the ‘Champagne method’ famously employed on the other side of the Pyrenees. It is a delicious – and much cheaper – version of its French cousin. Cava is extremely popular in Barcelona, and indeed the rest of Spain, thanks to the numerous vineyards in the region owned by top wine-makers such as Codorniu, Torres and Freixenet.

Cava was first produced in 1872 by Josep Raventós of the  Codorniu winery , who, after a reconnaissance mission to France, fell in love with Champagne and successfully copied its production method using Spanish grapes.

The essential process that makes a Cava what it is (and not a mere carbonated wine) is the secondary fermentation of the wine in the same bottle in which it is sold; the bubbles are formed naturally. This produces finer, more persistent bubbles than sparkling wines made by other methods, such as adding CO2 to a still wine.

Brut Force! 7 Different Types of Cava

Cava is produced with varying levels of dryness vs. sweetness, according to the amount of sugar used in the fermentation process. According to the Cava Producers Association the types are: brut nature , extra brut , brut , seco (dry), semiseco (semi-dry) and dulce (sweet). For connoisseurs, the drier the better.

Where is Cava Produced?

According to Spanish law, Cava can be produced in six wine regions in Spain and must be made according to the traditional Champagne method to qualify as the real deal. The most common grapes used in production are Macabeo, Parellada and Xarello, although Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Subirat can also be used to make a fine sparkling wine.

Ninety nine percent of Cava is made in  the Penedes region of Catalonia , just outside  Barcelona .

Xampanyerias (Champagne Bars)

Barcelona’s small handful of  Xampanyerias  (the word is simply Catalan for Champagne bar/Cava bar) are much-loved institutions, adored by the locals who flock to these, usually homely, dens to stand cheek-by-jowl and munch on tapas in between glasses of the good stuff. Typically the Cava is served up as a complement to relatively cheap  bocadillos  (sandwiches) and  tapas dishes which patrons are required to order if they want to be served drinks too.

The atmosphere is often a feeding frenzy and a far cry from a civilised sit down meal – or quiet drink – however a visit to a Xampanyeria is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to sample these typical Barcelona joints and see the Catalans in their natural environment… everyone from old men in ill-fitting suits to boys in beach wear and senoritas in elegant cocktail dresses are partial to a Cava-flowing standing supper!

Oenophiles can also sample some of the great reds and roses made in the nearby regions of Penedes and Priorat. Good nibbles too. It is a trifle touristic, but hey sometimes the holiday atmosphere of travellers indulging themselves is nice to be around. Address: Placa Santa Maria 5

This small-group tour takes you to an award-winning winery located in Alella, north of Barcelona, where you’ll sample some seven different wines, including Cava , white, red, sweet and fortified local wines. The tour also includes a typical Catalan farm-to-table lunch with local cheeses, cured meats, seafood and other traditional dishes. This is an all-day experience which very much immerses you in the wine-making and wine-tasting, giving you lots of useful information while also making for a very pleasant day out.

Barcelona Turisme Wine and Cava Tour

This tour is run by the local tourism board, Barcelona Turisme, and is great if you want a budget-friendly introduction to Cava and Catalan wine. The Wine and Cava Tour takes guests to the Penedès wine-making region to three of the biggest and most well-known wineries in the area: Freixenet, Bodegas Torres and Bodegas Jean-Leon. Here you’ll be able to see where the wines are made and sample different bottles along with snacks and wine pairings. You can also buy direct from the producers and the price includes transport by bus to and from Barcelona.

ArtCava Make Your Own Cava

If you’re the kind of person who likes to roll up their sleeves and get their hands a little dirty from time to time then the Make Your Own Cava tour is for you. ArtCava is a small-sized independently run Cava winery located near Vilafranca del Penedès and based around an ancient farmhouse or masia called Can Batlle. The three partners, Ignasi, Enric and Ramon are keen to share their passion for wine-making and the whole experience feels genuine and full of personal touches. Fortunately they’ve done most of the hard work so you can get straight to the bottling of the Cava and of course, the tasting.

CastleExperience Wine, Tapas & Cava Tour

Ever wondered how geographic positioning and the local environment – or what the experts like to call terroir – can alter the wine-making process? CastleExperience’s Wine, Tapas & Cava tour takes you to two different wineries in two different areas in Catalonia so you can find out. Starting off in the Penedès, you’ll visit an 18th century Cava winery and sample three different kinds of their Cava. Later, drive past the impressive Montserrat mountain and head to a winery in an area known as Pla de Bages where you’ll sample organic red wines and artisan cheeses.

Foodie&Tours Barcelona Bubbly Morning

Want to learn about Cava without having to leave Barcelona? You don’t have to. Foodie&Tours will bring the Cava to you with this two hour experience which takes place in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. Inside a local wine bar you’ll be greeted by a sommelier who will explain everything you need to know about Cava making. Then you’ll try three different types of Cava, each with their own personality and matched with fresh pastries and desserts. You’ll leave feeling you’ve got a good grasp of Catalonia’s Cava making culture and more importantly, its Cava drinking culture too.

The DIY approach

Last but not least, consider organising your own DIY tour of some of Catalonia’s best Cava wineries. The small town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia has one of the largest concentrations of Cava wineries, many of which can be reached within fifteen minutes by foot from the train station, with direct trains to Barcelona taking around 45 minutes. The bigger wineries such as Cordorniu and Freixenet will be ready to greet you unannounced but smaller establishments such as Solà Raventós or Caves Blancher are worth ringing ahead of time (someone usually speaks English). Doing it yourself means more flexibility, more scope to personalise your tour and no one to stop you deciding to extend your stay.

Freixenet & Recaredo: Catalunya’s Cava Country Beckons

The Spanish wine landscape is so much more than sangria and red wine from Rioja. From fresh and fruity whites to big and bold reds, you can find any style of wine you’re interested in drinking. Cava is one of the best-kept secrets of Spain though. The profile of Cava wineries is rising in the international market and you can usually find it abroad, traditionally marketed as a sparkling wine, perfect as a substitute for Champagne or Prosecco. And this is true! Cava is amazing value for money because it has the same level of quality, complexity, and deliciousness that Champagne is famous for, at prices that are often half the cost of Champagne.

Cava and the Penedès Region

Barcelona is the dream city for fans of bubbles. It’s conveniently located in the middle of Cava country. Only about 45 km east of the city sits the village of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the epicenter of cava production in the Penedès, the largest Cava producing area in Spain. One can only assume this is the reason Cava is abundant in Barcelona. I still get a little thrill ordering a “copa de Cava” on a regular evening, and not just saved for New Year’s and special occasions.

While you can never go wrong with any glass of Cava, knowing a little bit about it will increase the chance that you can find quality Cava and end up with a glass that you like. Just like Champagne, Cava has different taste profiles that are influenced by many factors. Age is the most straightforward factor.

If you want a party in a glass, choose a younger Cava. They generally are fresher, with zesty citrus notes and more intense bubbles. It’s also an excellent aperitif. As a Cava ages, it will develop more complex flavors, often described as toasty or nutty. The bubbles will soften and become less intense. Older Cavas get closer to what we expect from vintage Champagne.

To tell how long a Cava was aged, start by looking at the label on the bottle. A basic Cava will be aged for a minimum of nine months. A bottle labeled “Reserva” means the Cava will have been aged for at least fifteen months and a “Gran Reserva” for 30 months. Many producers continue to age their cavas for much longer than that based on the ultimate taste profile desired. Two other important terms to look for these days are “Corpinnat” and “Cava Paraje Calificado”. The terms indicate even more stringent requirements that dictate the winemaking process, including where grapes must be grown. These label terms are a good start if you are seeking out a higher quality wine to try.

A day trip to the Penedès region is the perfect way to expand your knowledge and take advantage of Barcelona’s prime location. Begin with Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, the original home of Cava, to learn about how this special wine is made and how the difference in producer philosophy influences the final product. This lovely Catalan town is home to several of the biggest names in Cava and Corpinnat and makes for the perfect starting point to see firsthand how Cava is made. Many bodegas have reopened with extensive safety measures in place and are ready to welcome guests. Sant Sadurni d’Anoia can be easily reached by train for a Cava adventure

Freixenet Cava

Even better, right next to the train station (and the first thing you see) is Freixenet . Perhaps one of the oldest and most well-known Cava producers in the world, Freixenet makes over 100 million bottles of Cava per year and distributes them widely. A visit to Freixenet offers a peek into this large scale operation as well a bit of time travel to the past. A private tour through the cellars of Freixenet is more like visiting a museum than a winery. The original facilities have been transformed to a display of the bottles, advertisements and machines originally used for winemaking at Freixenet. The history and nostalgia surround you as you walk through the cool tunnels. (Unfortunately, the usual fun small train ride through the modern production space is cancelled due to health and safety measures.) The tour ends the way every good winery visit should — with a tasting of two glasses of Cava on the scenic terrace with more options by the glass, if you want to explore some special bottlings that you can only find at the winery.

Recaredo Cava

Take a quick fifteen minute walk from Freixenet to neighboring Recaredo . Another institution of the Penedès, Recaredo began in 1924 and has led the charge over the last decade in improving the quality of Cava production in the region. A guided visit to Recaredo will show you a very different side of the industry. A much smaller operation, Recaredo is more of a living museum. The family still manages the entire winemaking process by hand, a true step back in time that’s evident winding through the cellar and seeing the history and tradition still proudly on display.

Recaredo is one of the founding bodegas of a new organization governing wine production in Catalunya, Corpinnat. The focus of these tours is the philosophy behind the organization and what that means for winemaking and viticulture in bodegas like Recaredo. All visits are organized for private groups at the moment, which is perfect for asking questions. The tour ends in the private tasting rooms where a flight of sparkling and still wines waits to showcase the experience and range that Recaredo offers. If you are lucky you might even meet Antonio, one of the second generation of Recaredo winemakers. Though retired, he is often around, keeping an eye on things and pointing out pictures of himself as a child in the cellars.

A visit to both Cava wineries offers the valuable opportunity to see and taste Cava from both ends of the spectrum and see how diverse this sparkling wine can be.

Next time you are looking for a special celebratory bottle, look for one of these at your local bodega or wine shop:

  • Recaredo Terrers Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2016, 25€
  • Recaredo Brut de Brut Serral del Vell 2013, 40 €
  • Raventós i Blanc de Nit 2017, 18 €
  • Huguet Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2010, 16€
  • Agustí Torelló Mata Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2013 17 €

How to Visit Cava Wineries Near Barcelona, Spain

Cava winery Spain

If you’re a wine lover visiting Barcelona, Spain, a day trip to a nearby Cava winery should be on your itinerary.

The center of production for this Spanish sparkling wine is just outside the city in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. It’s a quick train ride away. So, you don’t even need to rent a car!

As an advanced WSET-certified wine expert , I’ve personally researched and explored the Cava region. And I put together this guide with all the details you need, including how to get there, top wineries to visit, and the best Cava wine tours.

So, let’s get started planning your Cava wine tasting adventure!

How to Get to Cava Wineries Near Barcelona

If you’re staying in Barcelona, getting to the town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia by public transportation is super easy. From the Plaça de Catalunya, you can hop on the R4 train toward Sant Vicenç de Calders. It’s about an hour’s ride out to the town.

Make sure to pay attention so you get off at the right stop (also called Sant Sadurní d’Anoia). Freixenet will be right in front of you. And it’s only about a 10-minute walk into the town.

If you’re planning to visit Freixenet, another option is to buy a combined round-trip train and tour ticket .

Cava Tour From Barcelona

If you prefer a guided option, there are some excellent wine tours led by local wine experts.

For private tours, I recommend this full-day tour that includes transportation, tastings at two family-run vineyards, and a tapas-style meal.

Or if you prefer a small-group Cava tour, this one is a great option that includes wine tasting, tapas, and exploring vineyards in a 4×4 vehicle.

Best Cava Wineries Near Barcelona

These Cava and Corpinnat producers all have tasting rooms in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia that are relatively easy to get to. And they offer winery tours and wine tastings in English.

I’d recommend sticking to two for a day trip. But you might be able to squeeze in a third if you time your tours and tastings right.

1. Codorníu

Codorniu cava bar in wine tasting room

If you want to see where it all started, there’s no better place than Codorníu .

Josep Raventós Fatjó was the first to make Cava. He was inspired by a trip to the Champagne region in 1872. And thought, “Hey, I could make something similar using Spanish grapes.”

He was pretty successful, and the idea spread to others in the area. After phylloxera hit in the 1880s, many others followed his lead and replanted their vineyards with white grapes suitable for sparkling wine production.

Codorníu grew larger and larger with each generation. It was eventually inherited by Josep Maria Raventós i Blanc, who later left to found Raventós i Blanc (which, unfortunately, you can’t visit). But prior to doing that, he played a major role in expanding Codorníu.

Today, Codorníu is still one of the largest producers of Cava wines, making a wide range of sparkling wines from both indigenous and Champagne grape varieties . I particularly liked their rosé Cava at the tasting. And they have a premium collection of Reservas, Gran Reservas, and the top-tier Paraje Calificado.

Visiting Tips

The winery is a bit out of town. I walked to it, but be warned that it’s uphill and takes about a half hour from the train station. So, if you’re not up to it, you can catch a taxi from the station.

The 75-minute Discovery Tour is a great option that includes a guided tour where you learn about the production of Spanish Cava and visit the cellars. This is followed by a tasting in their Cava bar. Check the site for other wine experience options like food pairings, chocolate tasting, and Cava tasting courses.

2. Recaredo

Recaredo bottle and glass of sparkling wine

Recaredo was founded in 1924 by Josep Mata Capellades, who named the winery after his father.

Recaredo can claim a few firsts in the Penedès wine region. They were the first to make a single varietal sparkling wine from 100% Xarel·lo. And they were the first to be certified biodynamic in 2010 (basically, a stricter version of organic).

I should also mention they were named Catalonia’s Best Winery in 2017 by the Catalan Association of Sommeliers. And in 2018, they joined Corpinnat.

Recaredo’s sparkling and still wines are aged at least 30 months, and some for as long as 30 years! I love the delicious brioche and toasty notes this gives their wines.

They also use natural cork stoppers for bottle aging rather than crown caps. They believe this better preserves the original character of the wine. But it requires removal (called disgorgement) by hand so it’s a lot of manual labor.

You can book an Origen Visit to tour the cellar and learn about how they make and age the wines. You’ll get to taste two of their aged Corpinnat sparkling wines and two of their Cellar Credo still wines.

Or you can opt for a private visit, where you’ll get to see the vineyard and enjoy food pairings with your tasting.

Which wine region should you visit? Click to take the quiz.

Gramona is another Corpinnat producer. A bit of a romantic story, it was founded after the marriage of Pilar Batlle and Bartolomé Gramona. They started producing sparkling wines under the Gramona name and released the first one in 1961.

As with the requirements of Corpinnat, Gramona is all organic. And, like Recaredo, they are also certified biodynamic and use natural cork stoppers during aging.

The average age of Gramona’s sparkling wines is 6 years. Their flagship wine, Gramona Imperial, starts at 50 months. And then they go up from there at 7-12 years for the Ill Lustros label and 15+ for the Colección de Arte.

You can book a wine tasting to try these mature sparklers. They also offer food and wine pairing experiences. And, for you equestrian enthusiasts, even the option to go horseback riding in their vineyards.

4. Solà Raventós

If you’re planning to visit Gramona, you couldn’t be any closer to Solà Raventós . Located right next door, this small family-run winery was founded in 1898.

Pere and his wife have been at the helm since 1987. And their son Guifré is now helping.

This is a super limited production, with just 20,000 bottles per year. So, these wines are hard to get outside of the area.

They age their Cavas between two to five years. And have a selection of both white and rosé Reservas and Gran Reservas.

You can sample the full range of their excellent wines along with local snacks in a 1-hour tasting. Or book a 2-hour visit that includes a tour of the cellars as well.

5. Freixenet

Freixenet winery building

If you’ve ever seen the famous frosted-black-glass Cordon Negro bottle in the Cava section at your local store, you’re probably familiar with the name Freixenet (pronounced fresh-eh-net).

This mega-winery is one of the largest sparkling wine producers in the world, selling more than 100 million bottles in 2021. And they make 80% of Spain’s exported Cava.

While I wouldn’t say you should visit Freixenet for the best that Cava has to offer, I thought it was interesting to see how production is done on a larger scale. Plus, it’s right at the train station, so if you’re pressed for time, you can’t get any closer.

Freixenet was founded in 1914 when two Spanish winemaking families joined through marriage. Pedro Ferrer and Dolores Sala Vive got hitched and decided to turn the family business from still to sparkling wine production.

Over the years, the winery expanded internationally. Today, they work with 200 growing partners that supply the base wine for their bubbly. And the wines are sold in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Freixenet cava bottles in wine cellar

Visits start with a video of the winery’s history. And a look back on some of their well-known ads, such as the iconic boy in a red hat holding a bottle of Freixenet.

Next, visit the old part of the winery to see the cellars and learn about the original winemaking process that was used used. Then, tour the current production facility (or factory might be a better word for it!). You’ll end at the tasting room to sample a variety of their most popular Cavas.

Pin for Later!

Where to Stay for Visiting Cava Wineries

If you plan to visit a Cava winery in Spain, there’s no better place to base yourself than Barcelona. This bucket-list destination is known for its stunning architecture, beautiful beaches, and tasty tapas.

The H10 Madison Hotel is a great 4-star option with a pool, terrace, restaurant, and bar. It’s right in the heart of the city close to all the top sites. And it’s a 5-minute walk to the train station you’ll take to get to Sant Sadurní d’Anoia.

FAQs About Visiting Cava Wineries in Spain

What is cava.

Cava is Spanish sparkling wine that comes from the Cava D.O. (Denominación de Origen).

Macabeu, Xarel·lo, and Parellada are the traditional grape varieties used for Cava production. But you’ll also find Garnacha, Monastrell, Trepat, and Subirat Parent. Plus, some producers are slipping in French Champagne varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Like Champagne, Cava is made in the traditional method (aka méthode champenoise) where the secondary fermentation happens in the bottle. But the warmer climate means it usually has lower acidity.

And basic Cavas are not aged as long as their French cousins. But look for Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Paraje Calificado for sparklers with more time in the bottle.

Check out more alternatives to Champagne and learn about Spanish white wines .

What’s the difference between Cava and Corpinnat?

A group of Cava producers felt many had become too focused on high-volume production and the wines lacked a sense of place. So in 2015, they formed the Corpinnat brand and committed to stricter winemaking practices.

These wines must be made with mostly estate-grown indigenous grapes that are hand harvested. And they have to be aged for at least 18 months.

In 2019, Corpinnat producers were forced to leave the Cava D.O. But they are some of the best quality wines coming out of this region. So, it’s worth seeking them out and visiting!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cava Wineries?

Weather-wise, spring and fall are the best times to visit Cava wineries in Spain. Summer months can be hot and humid. So, visiting in March, April, May, October, or November is ideal.

If you’re okay with braving the crowds, Cava Week happens annually in mid-October. You’ll get to witness the “Cava Queen” be crowned and take the first sips of the year’s harvest. Plus, there are dinners, concerts, classes, and of course, plenty of Cava!

How Many Cava Wineries are Near Barcelona?

The town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia is home to more than 80 Cava producers. And there are 200+ in the entire Penedès region. This region is also known for producing some of the best non-sparkling Catalan wines.

How Much Are Cava Wine Tastings?

Cava wine tastings and tours are typically around €20 to €35. But some wineries offer extra experiences like private tours, vineyard visits, and food pairing experiences that cost much more. See my global guide if you’re wondering how much wine tasting is throughout the world .

Our favourite day in Spain! First of all, Mariana picked up the phone on a Sunday night and after a few phone calls to our destinations, she confirmed we would be picked up the very next morning. She was incredibly knowledgeable - not just about Barcelona and the wine country but she has travelled and lived abroad extensively so she was great to talk to. For lunch she took us to a very small, local restaurant that we never would have found on our own and it was superb.

Cava: Barcelona’s sparkling wine and where to try it

Sparkling wine cava

Sparkling wine contains dissolved gas, meaning that it’s doubly fermented inside the bottle. This is done by adding sugar and bottling the wine before it has finished the fermentation process.

Without doubt, the most famous sparkling wine in the world is Champagne , but there are many more. One of the best is called ‘ Cava ‘, and is found in Spain , more specifically in the region of Catalonia and its surroundings. Below, we explain a bit more about the different types of sparkling wine, we reveal the origin of Cava and we recommend an exciting wine tasting experience in Barcelona .

Types of sparkling wine around the world

Champagne is the most famous sparkling wine of all. It’s produced in France , with popular varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier.

Italy also has its own sparkling wine (Spumante) like Asti, Prosecco and Lambrusco. Whilst Germany boasts Sekt and Schauwein.

Other areas of the world, like Australia and the United States , also have regions with a suitable climate and the quality raw materials need to produce sparkling wine. For example, the regions of Tasmania, Adelaide Hills, California and Oregon all use traditional methods to produce quality sparkling wines.

Tour cava Barcelona

Cava: the sparkling wine you must try in Barcelona

In Spain, the sparkling wine par excellence is Cava . It is produced in the Penedés region, which is close to Barcelona , and dates back to the end of the 19th century. When, in 1887, the Phylloxera plague arrived from France, they had to change the grape varieties used and introduced white grape vines instead of red grape vines, therefore creating a wine with its own character.

The grape varieties most used for Cava are Xarel·lo, Macabeo and Parellada, whose properties are different, meaning they combine to create a unique taste . The United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and Belgium are the biggest consumers of Catalan Cava.

Cava and wine sampling in Barcelona

If you come on holiday to Barcelona and you like wine, then you must try Cava . We recommend a guided tour with a wine and Cava tasting experience in a family-owned vineyard .

On this tour we will visit 2 wineries , selected by our experts. We will arrive at the first in our luxurious Mercedes SUV. An expert oenologist will await you in the winery where the family have been growing vines for more than 2,000 years.

As well as learning all the vineyard’s secrets, and learning about the wine making process , we will try 4 wines along with some gourmet Spanish cold meats. We will tour the estate in a 4×4 for around 40 minutes, with spectacular views and a chance to relax.

The second winery also has a lot of history and is a specialist producer of Cava , Catalonia’s sparkling wine. After visiting the winery and the vineyards, we will taste 4 different types of Cava with a selection of aperitives .

Try Cava on your visit to Barcelona with World Experience!

Top Cava Bars in Barcelona That Wine Lovers Shouldn’t Miss

In Barcelona, you don’t need a holiday to pop open a bottle of bubbly. Cava is the region’s famously delicious sparkling white wine and is a staple of the Barcelona tapas culture.

Cava is everywhere in Barcelona. It's a staple to the tapas and food culture of the city! In reality, all of Catalonia loves its bubbly, so make sure to try these top cava bars in Barcelona!

El Rincon de Cava

This spot is definitely one of our favorite cava bars in Barcelona. As its name suggests, The Cava Corner, this place is tucked back on an unassuming street in Poble Sec . But if you’re looking for good cava and tasty tapas for a shockingly good price this is your spot! Glasses of the Catalan bubbly start at €0.85 and bottles start at €4.

Address:   Carrer de Blasco de Garay, 53

La Vinya del Senyor

With an epically long wine list and a gorgeous terrace, you could spend all day lounging at La Vinya de Senyor . It is possibly one of the most well-known cava bars in Barcelona. On the off chance that the wine doesn’t entice you, then the view will. La Vinya del Senyor faces the impressive Gothic church, Santa María del Mar. Inside the bar is fairly tiny so we recommend taking advantage of the Barcelona sunshine on their terrace. Undoubtedly one of the best cava bars in Barcelona!

Address:   Plaça de Santa Maria, 5

Bodega Maestrazgo

This is without a doubt one of our favorite cava bars in Barcelona. Not only that but this emblematic  wine shop in the heart of the Born neighborhood has an endless array of incredible wines lining the shelves. At the back of the shop find one of the cutest wine bars in Barcelona and a real neighborhood gem.

Address: Sant Pere Mes Baix, 90

We love some nothing more then a chilled cava at some of the best cava bars in Barcelona.

Xampañería Can Paixano

One glance in the Xampañería and you’ll see this is the place to be for cava and tapas in Barcelona. Located in the Barceloneta district we love this spot! The standing-room-only bar is almost always packed shoulder-to-shoulder with people expertly balancing their cava glasses and bocadillos (small sandwiches). It is absolutely worth battling the crowd though for some cold, sparkling cava and those  bocadillos .

Address:  Carrer de la Reina Cristina, 7

Barcelona Secrets works to ferret out gems you won’t find in any top 10 list. Pavel conducted a fantastic tour into Penedes with a very comfortable van. Our entire group had a great time at a medium-sized Cava producer’s estate. Pavel’s breadth and depth of wine knowledge was solid, the winery was great, the owner was gracious, and the Cava was excellent. It felt very much like an exclusive tour, not one for the masses. Also, for anyone considering this tour, we’d recommend adding on the lunch at a local restaurant. Atmosphere was perfect, there was plenty of great food, and I love a good digestif with my coffee. (From Tripadvisor)

This private tour (small group of 5) was incredible – pick up & drop off @ hotel, transport to vineyard with information on Barcelona and the Penedes region, facility and museum tour and very in-depth, varied product tasting. Pavel is incredibly knowledgeable and truly passionate about the cava and wine from the Penedes region as well as Barcelona and surrounding areas. We visited a family owned vineyard, were able to see every step of the process and then tasted with the owner – what an amazing day! A MUST DO if in Barcelona…thanks so much Pavel! Visit the Penedés

Cava Monserrat Spain

Where it all started...

The beginning of every story is exciting, and in the case of Cava it all began in the Penedés region. The town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia has earned itself the status of capital of this marvellous sparkling wine, the heart of this Catalan wine region with a long tradition. A place not to be missed on the Cava Route, where some of the most historic wineries are concentrated.

The landscape, situated halfway between the Mediterranean and the imposing slopes of the magical mountain of Montserrat, gives Penedés a unique character that makes it one of the most interesting wine tourism destinations in Catalonia, and the rest of Spain. The lively cultural life, with many festivals and activities linked to the winemaking calendar, helps to create an unforgettable visit, at whatever time you choose to come.

History, geography, cultural heritage, and the uniqueness of being the birthplace of Cava, make this an ideal destination for enjoying wine tourism with the family, located only 45 km from Barcelona. Many buildings in Catalan Modernist style bear the mark of Cava: architectural jewels of the industry, as well as factories that have been converted into museums. An ideal place to delve into the history and origins of the wine, all year round.

And once we’re in Penedés, what should we do?

Sant sadurní d’anoia, the heart of cava.

La Fassina de Can Guineu

In the Alt Penedés region, Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is the undisputed capital of Cava. From here, you can peruse the raft of possibilities on offer within the territories of the Designation of Origin Cava.

This is the ideal place to delve into the history and origins of Cava. A place not to be missed, and the true cradle of this vibrant sparkling wine with its power of seduction...

Two essential things to visit in Sant Sadurní are some of the most archetypal and characteristic cellars in the history of Cava, and the Cava Interpretation Centre , located in a wine distillery dating from 1814: the La Fassina building.

The historic centre of the town, with its emblematic medieval defence tower and modernist buildings, is pleasant for a stroll on autumn afternoons.

Copa Cava

Within the setting of this area where the Cava industry has established itself, whether in small wineries or in larger ones, you can meet the protagonists of day-to-day life in the winemaking world. On organised visits and tours of Cava wineries, you will see how they work, and learn from them about the production process.

Cava celebracion

Museums, historical sites, and festivals, all with a single protagonist: CAVA

Cava celebracion

Where can you learn more about the importance of viticulture in the Penedès, as well as the area’s history? At Vinseum , the Museum of Catalan Wine Cultures in Vilafranca del Penedés - a must-see. A total of 17,000 pieces are organised into fascinating archaeological and ethnological collections, witness to local winemaking heritage - this area has been linked to the cultivation of the vine and wine production since ancient times.

Another interesting visit is the prehistoric site of Font de la Canya, located in the municipality of Avinyonet del Penedés. This Iberian settlement of the Cosetan tribe was abandoned when the Roman army arrived, and was not excavated until 1997. A permanent exhibition explains about the discovery of materials used in winemaking and wine consumption.

Wine culture also hooks up with music - the Vijazz festival is held in the town of Vilafranca del Penedés in July. Music shares the limelight with Penedés wine and Cava, showcased as part of a varied programme that brings together the best of international jazz.

Visit the vineyards of Penedés through its viewpoints and trails

Vendimia cava

If Penedés has one defining feature, it is its vineyards. Only 30 minutes from Barcelona, you can enjoy a sea of vines that extends from Alt Penedés to Baix Penedés and Baix Llobregat.

A good way to take in the vast extent of this area of vine-planted terraces is by visiting the special vineyard viewing points, “ miravinyas ”, where you can enjoy unique panoramic views. Look out for the signs to the miravinya in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, where you go up to the Romanesque hermitage of Sant Benet d'Espiells, surrounded by vineyards; in Torrelavit, where a giant chair stands on the small hill of La Malgranada; in Subirats; in La Bardera, next to a 14th-century farmhouse; and in Avinyonet del Penedés, where the miravinya El Zarcillo offers a spectacular view of an area dominated by vineyards, olive and peach trees.

Walking along the Camí del Vi (Wine Route), in Vilafranca del Penedés, is another recommended activity. This 3.5 km route features eight stops explaining how this town is linked to winemaking. The walk invites you to reflect on the passage of time in nature, to trace the origins of old tavern songs, to breathe in the scent of the earth, and to soak up the Penedés landscape.

*All the Penedés viewing points are listed in the mobile application Miravinya (only available for Spanish devices), which offers a suggested route through this region to discover its nature, history, landscape and culture.

How to get there

Tourism in the Penedes Wine Region

A visit to the Penedes wine region in Catalonia, Spain, is a truly unforgettable experience. The region is located just an hour’s drive from Barcelona and is known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and, of course, its exceptional wines.

As you enter the Penedes region, you will be immediately struck by the picturesque landscape of rolling hills and lush vineyards. The region is home to thousands of hectares of vineyards and produces a wide variety of wines, including Cava, the Spanish sparkling wine, and red, white and rosé wines.

One of the best ways to experience the Penedes wine region is to go on a winery tour. Many of the wineries in the region offer guided tours of their facilities, where you can learn about the history of the winery and the wine-making process. You will have the opportunity to see the vineyards, the cellars, and the bottling line. The tour guide will provide you with information about the grape varieties that are grown in the region, and the different types of wines that are produced.

After the tour, you will have the opportunity to sample some of the wines that the winery produces. The tour guide will guide you through the tasting and explain the different flavors and aromas that you can expect to find in each wine. The Penedes region is known for its sparkling wines, particularly Cava, which is made in the traditional method like champagne. The wines are made from a blend of grape varieties, including Xarel-lo , Macabeu , and Parellada , and are known for their delicate bubbles and dry, refreshing taste.

One of the highlights of a visit to a Penedes winery is the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Catalan lunch or dinner. Many wineries offer the option to enjoy a meal on the terrace, with views of the vineyards and the surrounding countryside. The meal will include traditional Catalan dishes, such as paella, and will be paired with the winery’s wines.

The region is also home to several medieval villages and historic sites, such as the medieval castle of Sant Marti Sarroca , which is well worth a visit.

Overall, a visit to the Penedes wine region in Catalonia is an unforgettable experience that combines the beauty of the landscape, the rich history, and the delicious wines. It’s a perfect destination for wine lovers and those who appreciate the beauty of the nature and culture.
