“Circus Roncalli” at the Viennese Town Hall Square

“Manege frei” for the “Circus Roncalli”.   From September 14th to October 09th 2022, the Vienna Town Hall Square will be transformed into a multimedia spectacle.

“Spectacle between nostalgia and modernity”

After two tour cancellations (due to the pandemic), Circus Roncalli is once again inviting you to its historic tent on Vienna’s Rathausplatz. Under the motto “All for ART for All”, traditional circus art is combined with the most modern elements from film, theatre, music and painting to create a multimedia spectacle for the first time.

Roncalli’s worldwide unique 300-degree holography, breathtaking costumes inspired by Andy Warhol to Frida Kahlo, world-class artists & loving clowns, plus the sound of the big stars from rock & pop like Bowie or the Beatles are perfectly arranged to create an intoxication for the senses.

It has been 45 years since Bernhard Paul founded the famous Circus Roncalli together with fellow artist André Heller. Since then, Roncalli has revolutionized circus art and inspired the people of Europe, beginning with his world premiere of “the greatest poetry in the universe” in Bonn.

Das Circus-Theater Roncalli blickt auf eine jahrzehntelange Erfolgsgeschichte zurück. Statt klassischer Tierdressur setzt der von der New York Times als schönster Zirkus der Welt betitelte Traditionsbetrieb heute auf eine ganz besondere Mischung aus Akrobatik, Clownerie, Magie, Live-Musik und Varieté-Charme . Dem Alltag für einige Stunden entfliehen – wie könnte das besser gelingen als mit den Shows des Circus-Theaters Roncalli?

Nach der Gründung Mitte der 1970er-Jahre in Wien feiert das Circus Theater Roncalli schon auf der ersten Tour riesige Erfolge. Doch bereits nach einer Saison gehen die beiden Gründer Bernhard Paul und André Heller aufgrund von Uneinigkeit über das Konzept wieder getrennte Wege. Bernhard Paul will den Traum vom Zirkus jedoch nicht aufgeben: Er zieht mit seinem Wohnwagen auf das Gelände der ehemaligen Schokoladenfabrik Stollwerck in Köln, wo sich damals zahlreiche Kreative tummeln. Schnell findet Paul Unterstützung von Kostümdesignern und Zirkuskünstlern und kann seine Vision schließlich verwirklichen: 1980 findet die Premiere des neuen Circus Roncalli statt.

Eine Institution der Zirkuskunst

Seither zeichnet sich Bernhard Paul als alleiniger Zirkusdirektor für das kunterbunte Show-Spektakel zwischen Nostalgie und Moderne verantwortlich. Unzählige Touren im In- und Ausland, die Eröffnung von Roncallis Apollo-Varieté-Theater an der Düsseldorfer Rheinpromenade und der jährlich stattfindende Roncalli Weihnachtscircus im Berliner Tempodrom gehören zum Portfolio des kreativen Masterminds.

Das Circus-Theater Roncalli ist das ganze Jahr über auf Volksfesten, Events und Weihnachtsmärkten unterwegs. Als Basis und Winterquartier dient seit rund 40 Jahren ein ca. 10.000 Quadratmeter großes Privatgrundstück in Köln-Mühlheim. Hier finden sämtliche der rund 100 historischen, liebevoll restaurierten Zirkuswagen bequem Platz. Auch die Kostüm- und Materialwerkstätten sind hier untergebracht.

Als echter Meister seines Fachs ist Bernhard Paul Besitzer der größten Circus- und Varieté-Sammlung Europas. Historische Plakate und Zelte, Karussells und Jahrmarktstände sind nur einige der fantasievoll gestalteten Exponate, die Zirkus-Fans bei mobilen Ausstellungen bestaunen können. Noch ist die Eröffnung eines stationären Zirkusmuseums Zukunftsmusik, doch vielleicht öffnen sich ja schon bald seine Türen?

Circus-Theater Roncalli: Wunderwelt zwischen Tradition und Moderne

Stimmungsvolle Orgelmusik, der Duft von frisch gebrannten Mandeln und Zuckerwatte, die Späße der Clowns und Gaukler gleich zur Begrüßung: Einiges ändert sich im Circus-Theater Roncalli wohl nie. Dennoch ist es den Betreibern wichtig, mit der Zeit zu gehen. So tauchen heute stromsparende LED-Lichter die Kuppel des Zirkuszeltes in atmosphärisches Licht. Bereits seit Mitte der 1990er-Jahre werden keine Zirkusnummern mit Wildtieren mehr aufgeführt, seit der Saison 2018 verzichtet Roncalli gänzlich auf Tierdarbietungen .

Stattdessen stehen Akrobatik, Magie, Schauspiel und Clownerie noch stärker im Fokus der fantasievoll inszenierten Shows des Circus-Theaters Roncalli. Dabei sind die Übergänge zwischen orchestraler Aufführung, Varieté-Theater und Artistik fließend. Um den Zuschauern auch weiterhin ein klassisches Zirkuserlebnis ermöglichen zu können, arbeitet das Circus-Theater Roncalli mit der weltweit einzigartigen 360-Grad-Holografie: Sie zaubert täuschend echte 3D-Projektionen von Wildtieren in das magische Rund der Manege – beeindruckend und innovativ.

Das war mein erster Zirkus-Besuch und ich fand es lustig, unterhaltsam und atemberaubend schön. Meine Mama und ich saßen in der Loge 8, Premium Parkett, Reihe 2. Ich kann den Circus Roncalli nur weiterempfehlen. Top!

Akrobatik vom Feinsten Schöne Kostüme, wunderbare Atmosphäre, viel Komik, aber mehr für Erwachsene als für Kinder….

Ambiente und Künstler sind hervorragend, Clowns begrüßen schon vor der Vorstellung mit herrlichen Einlagen. Sitzplätze etwas beengt und teilweise mit Sichteinschränkung.

Circus Theater Roncalli – All for ART for all

It was time for the first circus visit of my life. So we took advantage of the tour of the Circus-Theater Roncalli and the stop in Frankfurt. The circus was founded in 1975, has been doing without any animal performance since 2018 and is still wildly good. Because circus always has something fascinating and magical about it. Whether in film or television, circus transcends generations and entertains people. As it was on this evening, when grandparents gathered with their children and grandchildren.

There was already a magic in the air beforehand, when the circus tent could be glimpsed from afar, enveloped in wisps of mist. Circus is simply retro and nostalgia pure and I can not even say why. Certainly influenced from the media and also movies like Dumbo , Water for Elephants or even more recently Nightmare Alley . Circus, fairground or funfair were the Facebook, Netflix and TikTok back then. The fact that this kind of entertainment still exists today is a nice distraction from the digital world that holds us in its embrace.

We enjoyed the show from the balcony lodge directly opposite the entrance and with a great view of the ring as well as, of course, the artists and performers. It was a good change between humorous interludes, acrobatics and artistic performances. The audience was also allowed to get involved from time to time and was actively included in the show. Thus a well-rounded overall program was created, which left nothing to be desired. Accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack of the live band, not only tricks were shown, but rather stories were told.

The Roncalli Circus Theater also offered a lot of information and entertainment away from the main tent with exhibitions on earlier shows and the history of the circus. Of course, the well-being is further provided with food and drinks. It is an all-round carefree package for a perfect (family) evening. We certainly had fun and I thank my parents for letting me choose my first visit to the circus.

Circus Roncalli on track

630 tonnes of circus equipment on a 700 metre block train. From Germany to Austria.

As part of its “All for ART for ALL” tour, Circus RONCALLI is coming to Vienna after a two-year break and will be in the city between 14 September and 9 October 2022. The company, based in Cologne, continues to rely on ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) to transport around 630 tonnes of circus equipment by rail.

RCG then takes over transportation in Passau, Germany, before bringing the equipment to the Freudenau port in Vienna. The load consists of 30 beautifully maintained, well restored circus and showman’s wagons that are up to 120 years old, various equipment such as fences and tarpaulins as well as small vehicles. Furthermore, around 4.5 kilometres of cable, 10,000 LED lights and 5 kilometres of water hoses are transported to Vienna on a 700 metre block train. Circus Roncalli’s equipment is unloaded by the Roncalli logistics team and, over a period of days, it will transform the Rathausplatz in Vienna into a realm of magic and poetry. From 14 September, the stage is set for the new programme “All for ART for ALL”.
