But, for many locals and tourists, it's hard and inconvenient to explore Cleveland's outdoors.

We started Cleveland Adventure Company in 2023 to fix that problem.  Our mission is to make our city's natural beauty more accessible and enjoyable for neighbors and visitors alike.

Ohio to Erie Trail

Level of support - inn to inn.

On Adventure Cycling’s inn-to-inn self-contained trips, riders carry their gear, but there’s a lot less of it because participants stay in hotels and eat in restaurants every night, no camping or group cooking gear is needed. Learn More

Physical Difficulty - Level 3

These tours average between 35 and 60 miles per day, and have generally hilly terrain, with some days very hilly or mountainous (the hilly or mountainous days may have shorter mileages). Elevation gain averages between 1500 and 3000 feet per day, with any single day total not exceeding 4000 feet. (Formerly Intermediate/Intermediate+ tours)

Average Mileage: 35-60/day Average Elevation Gain Range: 1500-3000 ft/day, high <4000 ft/day

Welcome to the Ohio to Erie Trail (OTET), a scenic 326-mile trail linking the Ohio River in Cincinnati to Lake Erie in Cleveland. This Ohio statewide corridor of trails and on-road routes connect the south to the north, traversing four major cities, numerous quaint small towns, and miles of countryside. The entirety of the OTET is open to bike touring, with 83 percent of the trail on off-street trails made up of hard gravel or paved surfaces. Considerable portions of the OTET are through parks such as Little Miami State Park and at least 20 miles within Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Our group will dip our back tires in the Ohio River under Cincinnati’s historic Roebling Suspension Bridge in Smale Park, and end by dipping our front tires in Lake Erie at Edgewater Park in Cleveland, hence the Ohio (river) to (lake) Erie Trail. This is the longest continuous bike path, also known as Ohio Bike Route 1, and is a trail meant to be enjoyed.

We’ll leave with a deep appreciation for the beauty and character of Ohio.

Day 1. Cincinnati, Ohio, 0 miles

We’ll gather in the late afternoon in Cincinnati, meet our fellow cyclists, and have our orientation meeting. If you arrive early, enjoy a stroll to Smale Riverfront Park, our start point for our adventure on the Ohio to Erie Trail.

Day 2. Cincinnati to Xenia. 68 miles

After a hearty breakfast, we will ride over as a group to dip our back tires in the Ohio River in Smale Park and begin today’s route from OTET’s southern terminus to Xenia.

The OTET begins on the Ohio River Trail, where we will begin our route cycling alongside the Ohio River. We will continue through picturesque Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park to Turkey Ridge Park, experiencing great views of the mighty River Trail. We’ll continue onto the Lunken Airport Trail and the Little Miami Scenic Trail passing through Terrace Park, Milford, Miamiville, the trail town of Loveland, and on to King Mills and continuing north.

Day 3. Xenia to Columbus. 59 miles

Today we will ride the South Central region traversing Greene, Clark, Madison, and Franklin counties via the Little Miami Scenic Trail, the Prairie Grass Trail, Roberts Pass, Camp Chase Trail, the Hilltop Connector, the Lower Scioto Greenway, and the Downtown Connector. The terrain is relatively flat, and the OTET utilizes well-marked street routes in South Charleston, London, and Columbus.

Day 4. Columbus to Mt. Vernon, 52 miles

We begin today’s ride on Downtown Connector, joining up with the urban Alum Creek Trail. We will ride through the official geographic center of Ohio, correctly named Centerburg.

Our overnight stay tonight is located on the beautiful Mount Vernon Square. Arrive in time to visit the Ariel-Foundation Park, an unbelievable 250 acre one-of-a-kind of adaptive reuse on the former site of a glass-making factory. The park features architectural ruins, an observation tower, steel and glass sculptures, walking trails, and a museum.

Day 5. Mt. Vernon to Millersburg, 42 miles

Today’s travels will take you through the villages of Howard and Danville, where we will join with the Mohican Valley Trail to the Bridge of Dreams, a 370-foot covered bridge originally built in the 1920s for the railroad, covered in 1998, and is the longest covered bridge in Ohio.

We’ll be traveling through Amish Country today, ending in historic full service Millersburg. Make sure to stop at Hipp Station, an old train station noted as the most famous stop along the trail. Note you will be on the Holmes County Trail, the only dual-purpose recreational trail and horse and buggy path in the U.S.

Day 6. Millersburg to Massillon, 38 miles

We’ll continue riding through Amish Country, sharing the route with horse-drawn buggies. The early part of today’s route will be on beautiful rural roads before we turn onto the Ohio & Erie Canal towpath. The surface of the O&E Canal towpath is clay and crushed limestone. We’ll continue riding alongside the Tuscarawas River to our overnight in Massillon.

Day 7. Massillon to Akron, 30 miles

As we head north, we’ll continue on the OTET/O&E Canal towpath through historic Canal Fulton on the Tuscarawas River. As we get closer to Akron, we’ll ride over to the boardwalk on beautiful Summit Lake and have a chance to stop at the Summit Lake Nature Center. From an art museum to a zoo, there is plenty to do in Akron!

Day 8. Akron to Cleveland, 39 miles

Our final riding day will take us through 21 miles of Cuyahoga Valley National Park before reaching our final destination, Lake Erie. Here we will dip our front tires in Lake Erie at Edgewater Park, the northern terminus of the Ohio to Erie Trail. Once our group arrives, we’ll hop in a shuttle that will take us back to Cincinnati where we’ll say goodbye to our new friends and scroll through photos of a great week together.

Accommodations -

Meals - indoor dining.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for each day of the trip. On inn-to-inn trips, breakfast and dinner are provided in eating establishments on the route; lunch is prepared in the morning and you carry it with you on your bike. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.

Physical Difficulty -

Terrain - rolling hills.

Tours with Rolling Hills are those that have a bit more climbing in them, but the grades are still fairly relaxed. We’ll typically see climbing of less than 1,800 feet per day and venture into the 2-5% average for grade. (19-38 vertical feet/mile).

End of Tour Options: Our tour will end by riding into Cleveland, then a shuttle back down to Cincinnati on day 8. For those wishing to stay in Cincinnati longer, you can choose to depart the tour there.

Information for eBike riders : Because every rider, eBike, road condition, and elevation profile is different, it is ultimately up to the participant to judge best whether their battery will last through each tour day. We recommend using pedal assist in its lowest setting or off when not needed to maximize battery range. Bringing a second battery is also recommended. Remember, there is no vehicle support on our inn-to-inn trips, and you would need to carry the extra battery along with all of your other things.

We always try to book a bike tour the first day in a new city. It helps you to get the lay of the land and allows you to cover more area than just walking. (We cannot say that about bus tours). This tour did not disappoint! We thoroughly enjoyed our bike tour with Joe on a beautiful August day. He fitted us with helmets, adjusted the seats on our comfortable bikes, and gave us an overview of the tour. Cleveland is a bikeable city and we felt very safe with Joe leading the way. We stopped at 15 to 20 points of historical and current interest. Joe was enthusiastic and gave us exactly what we expected, fresh air on our faces and a fun way to see and learn about Cleveland. Our Rating: A+, 5 stars

After coaster mecca (Cedar Point), a friend and I had about half a day to spend in Cleveland and decided to look for a sightseeing tour. Cleveland Bike Tours is one of two major bike tour operators in the city and one of just a handful of sightseeing tour operators there period. We'd never done a bike tour before, but they had great reviews on Trip Advisor and a really professional website, so we made last minute reservations for the Downtown tour. Likely due to the poor weather forecast, we were the only two on the tour. Private tour at group-subsidized prices! Score! It did rain a bit during the tour but thankfully it was just water so nobody died. When we started the ride (which were not on those skinny road bikes us tourists love to fall over on) I got nervous that I wasn't cut out for it. I'm in the worst shape of my life and had only been on a bike once in the past ten years. I was really feeling it in my legs and thought I had gotten in over my head after two days of walking and getting abused by coasters. Then I realized we had just biked up a hill... and felt like an idiot. I was so focused on remembering how to bike I hadn't noticed the incline. After the initial hill the ride wasn't strenuous AT ALL. Cleveland, for the most part, is flat as a pancake. Really, anyone can participate. Even lazy people. The tour gives a nice overview of some of the more prominent landmarks downtown, including some historic buildings, sports stadiums, public art, and monuments. While Cleveland may have some of the highest rates of poverty in the nation (for a city), you'd never know it from downtown, which is pristinely clean, beautiful, and filled with activity. I'd love to see a longer tour option in the future with interior stops at some of the historic churches, banks, and the three arcades. The standard tour will leave you wanting to revisit your stops so you can see things in more depth, which is great if you're looking for an introduction to the downtown area and have time to explore after. If you're more limited in time, you might want to look for a private guide for the day. Alternatively, check out CityProwl: free audio-guided tours of various parts of Cleveland. They would make a good supplement to the bike tours. You can find them in the iTunes podcast library if you search for CityProwl as one word. Cleveland has plenty to offer the out-of-towner who has a few days to kill, and the Cleveland Bike Tours offerings are a solid introduction to much of what's available outside University Circle. The tour hosts, Cleveland native couple, Anne and Joe, are fantastic. They were accommodating, polite, and fun. Anne was the primary guide for our tour and is especially energetic; you can really tell she loves her city, and as always the love a guide exudes for their home spills over to the rest of the group. While we probably won't be back to Ohio anytime soon (as Bostonians, we are HIGHLY suspect of midwesterner's overt politeness and eagerness to start conversations with strangers... we know you're all planning something sneaky!), should the call of the coasters become unbearable, we'll definitely be booking with Anne and Joe for another one of their tours.

We had a great tour on our recent visit to Cleveland. Our guide was very knowledgeable.

My friend and I had a great time participating in the Downtown Cleveland bike tour with our guide, Joe. The bikes were comfortable and in good condition, and biking around town was easy with the (mostly) flat terrain and Joe's clear directions and instructions. As we covered all the major sights (and then some) in downtown Cleveland, Joe shared lots of interesting information at each stop. Overall a great introduction to Cleveland, I highly recommend it!

Four star selection auto-states, "Yay! I'm a fan."... and I am. I gave experiential holiday gifts, and to my 80-something, rucumbent bike riding father I gave a CLE bike tour. Turned out several family members came to CLE the weekend he 'redeemed' his gift, so I bought more tickets than anticipated & the guide had to answer a broad range of questions & pace the trip for our range of skills. The ride was absolutely manageable for all ages. The town was a tad 'ugly' thanks to the all-star game -- plastic fences, pallets of supplies, etc. but that's a complaint for our mayor. The tour was interesting & informative. The start/end point at the north coast harbor is a perfect spot from which to continue to enjoy the city. Hopefully as the business grows, they'll add a cooler for water & maybe on-site repair tools for sale. All in all a great time that I'd happily do again.

Had the pleasure of joining a Cleveland Bike Tour through Ohio City after a friend's recommendation and couldn't have had a better experience. The bikes were perfect - clean and well-maintained and the staff was super knowledgable about the area. They made sure I knew how to operate the bike safely and shared all kinds of tips and stories throughout the tour. Even though I was raised in Cleveland, I learned so much about my town and would recommend their tours highly to both tourists and residents alike! Can't wait to join another tour soon. Thank you!

On our way with our Cleveland Bike Tours group!

Love this company. We rented from them two years ago when they were called Great Lakes Touring Company and back then had bikes delivered to the railroad station. Now days they have some bikes set up at the major stations such as Rockside and Peninsula. Half day cost (4hrs) is around 24$. Really great customer service and all around nice people running this company. We went biking this Saturday and rented two bikes on the spot. They were able to accommodate last minute requests for a basket on a bike and they were able to get us some from the train. One of the bikes broke 2 hours into our ride... the gear broke... with fair warning prior to renting that the bikes on the train are older than the ones they have at the station (but the bikes at the station don't come with baskets), and haven't been thoroughly checked out to see if they are reliable or not. Anyways, we called and the lady who rented the bikes apologized profusely, picked up us from where we were stranded and didn't even charge us for the whole bike trip. Talk about great customer service! Will definitely rent from them again. Highly recommend this company for all your biking needs.

I rented bikes out of the Rockside Station, now the lady that rented them out to me was great. The bikes themselves were garbage!!! DO NOT RENT!!! the chain on the bike popped and the left break was not working at all....that is a major problem and will never be coming back!

Riding in the bus lane?  We get asked this question a lot.  In Cleveland, you are permitted (and encouraged) to ride in the Bus Lanes throughout the city EXCEPT those found on Euclid Avenue. Those have separate bus-only signals that legally prevent any other vehicles from using the lane.

There are a number of great resources available for learning how to keep your bike working right and how to ride safely in traffic.

• Cycling Education Programs - we host informational classes on a wide range of cycling topics.
• Ohio City Bicycle Co-op  - OCBC is a non-profit, volunteer-driven cooperative bicycle education center offering riding and repair classes; refurbished used bikes for sale or rent; hands-on learning and shop credit for volunteering; and public shop use, advice, and assistance.
• Village Bicycle Co-op  - VBC is a non-profit that teaches bike repair and safe riding classes. They also offer refurbished bikes for sale.
• League of American Bicyclists  - The LAB offers informal and formal bike education programs for those interested in teaching others how to ride safely.

Bikes on public transit

In Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, all RTA buses are equipped with bike racks to securely hold your bicycle. Check out this short instructional video on how to use the bus racks on GCRTA:

This morning our ride starts in Xenia where we left off yesterday. Today you’ll ride a combination of the Little Miami Scenic Trail, Camp Chase Trail and Lower Scioto Greenway on your way to Columbus, the capital city of Ohio! With a blossoming art scene, a slew of craft breweries and an annual Caffeine Crawl weaving through local shops, the capital city is the quiet secret of the Midwest. The city’s beautiful, well-planned outdoor areas are one of the top reasons to visit as well. Green spaces thread through the metropolis, offering an escape from the breakneck pace of urban life. Downtown Millersburg has some neat things to see, including the Victorian House Museum, a meticulously restored 28-room Queen Anne, cute boutique shops, and Miller’s Creamery, which serves all sorts of ice cream and other tasty treats!

Get back on the Holmes County Trail and make your way through Amish farmland to Akron. Ride through the Amish towns of Holmesville and Fredericksburg today, where you’ll likely see Amish buggies clopping down the street alongside cars and bicycles. Follow the Tuscarawas River into Akron, our destination for today. If there were a contest for the Ohio city with the most unexpected history, Akron would win. The hamburger was supposedly invented here. Thomas Edison visited often (his wife was an Akronite). Around the turn of the century, Akron’s supremacy in tire manufacturing helped it become known as the “rubber capital of the world.” And let’s not forget a certain NBA superstar who calls Akron home—they even renamed Main Street “King James Way” after him.

We’ll have our final dinner together tonight in Akron.

Our last day exploring the Buckeye State. Ride through a pretty chain of metro parks and Cuyahoga Valley National Park as you wind your way to the shores of Lake Erie. We’ll finish up at Cleveland Public Square, a beautiful park in the center of the city. We recommend you take an extra day after the bike tour to see the sights in Cleveland – including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the house from the film  A Christmas Story, and the sprawling West Side Market. If you drove into Cincinnati for your vacation, we will provide a shuttle back to vehicles at the conclusion of our tour.

Traverse the state of Ohio, from the Ohio River to Lake Erie, on 326 miles of rail, canal, multi-use trials and quiet rural roads from Cincinnati to Cleveland.

This is a moderate, yet relaxing ride through lush farmlands, while visiting quaint small town and enjoying what four of the major Ohio cities have to offer regarding music, art, and culture. Cycle of Life Adventures offers the trip for those who are more comfortable on bike paths and rail trails.

This tour takes on flat roads and trails with mileage ranging from 35 to 70 miles per day, giving you the opportunity to explore quiet rural roads of central Ohio at your pace.

This tour is a destination tour, starting in Cincinnati and ending in Cleveland. You will experience the Midwest at its finest, from the tranquility of the second largest Amish settlement in the country to the arts and culture of Ohio metropolitan areas. You will share the “road” with other cyclists, hikers, and the clip-clop of horse drawn buggies.

Each day of the tour brings new and interesting areas of exploration. Historic farms, factories that have been revitalized with different uses, urban and national parks, the 3rd longest covered bridge in the US will be part of our daily adventures. The well-designed Ohio and Erie Trail connects the length of Ohio with a variety of mostly well-maintained off-road bike routes. Rides into the small and historic towns of Millersburg, Massillon, Xenia, Mt. Vernon, where we take in nature and history.

Come to Cincinnati early for this tour and take advantage of the local art and music. Or stay afterwards in Cleveland to check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Our Ohio to Erie Trail bike tours utilize the best in local B&Bs and hotels to ensure a comfortable and refreshing stay each night. All lodgings are located along the trail or within easily bikeable distance.

We choose only rooms with private bathrooms, and most have one queen bed. Some lodgings offer rooms with two separate beds, and some have suites which allow up to 3 guests (typically these rooms have a queen and single bed or air mattress).

A one-way shuttle between Cleveland and Cincinnati is included in all tours, but can be removed. Drive time is approximately 4.5 hours barring unusual traffic. The shuttle can run at the start or the end of your trip; and your trip can start in Cleveland or Cincinnati.

Daily luggage shuttling is not available for this trail.

Some breakfasts are included in our OTET tours (all included meals will be noted on your tour quote). For non-included meals we provide daily suggestions and a list of recommended restaurants. Those with significant dietary restrictions, please advise us at the time of booking so that we can communicate this to your B&B correctly.

In smaller towns, some restaurants will close one day a week and often that will be on a Sunday or Monday.

Vegetarian and vegan options are relatively accessible along the trail and can be accommodated by all B&Bs we book.

All riders will receive access to our Ride with GPS Trip Experience created just for this itinerary. You do not need to have a personal account to use the premium features included. The Experience provides you with a daily itinerary, including where to eat each day, trail highlights, and any specific instructions, all easily accessed on your phone.

It also includes digital mapping with offline voice cues and other premium features. Mapping can be downloaded for use on Garmin and other devices, as well.

Welcome to the Ohio to Erie Trail! Start your ride from the Ohio River in Cincinnati and enjoy the views along the dedicated bike trails that lead from the city. You’ll follow the Little Miami Scenic Trail, passing through state parks and quaint riverside communities.

Meals: On own Overnight: Waynesville

Today you’ll start off riding the Little Miami Scenic Trail then hop off at Xenia to follow the Prairie Grass Trail, which carries you through small central Ohio towns and farms. Nearing the outskirts of Columbus, bike along the trail network directly into the city and enjoy the vibrancy of Downtown and the Short North district.

After an evening in the city, you’ll bike along a series of trails out of Columbus and then through a mix of regional parks and residential areas. The 17-mile Heart of Ohio Trail leads into the small city of Mount Vernon at the end of the day.

Today is a day rich in biking variety. You’ll start the ride out of Mount Vernon on the Kokosing Gap Trail, once part of the Pennsylvania Railroad line. Ride through tunnels and see old railroad history. Beyond Danville the route takes the short but lovely Mohican Valley Trail which features the “Bridge of Dreams”, a covered wooden bridge. The last half of the day is spent in the heart of Amish country in Holmes County. The trail section here is a climb to a fun descent, then you’ll be on a trafficked highway shoulder between Glenmont and Killbuck (approx. 7 miles). The end of the day is spent back on the rail trail into Millersburg, which you’ll likely share with horse and buggy traffic.

Meals: Breakfast Overnight: Millersburg

Leaving Millersburg, the OTET follows the Holmes Country Trail for several more miles before transitioning onto paved and gravel secondary roads. As you near the small city of Massillon you’ll pick up the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail on your way to Akron. Follow the towpath route into Akron where you’ll spend the night.

You’ll be biking on the towpath trail for almost the entire day today as you leave Akron and enter Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath is a joy to ride and worthy of a bike trip all on its own. It’s a great way to spend your last day of biking, as it travels all the way to Canal Basin Park in Cleveland. The last part of your ride today will take you directly to Edgewater Park at the shore of Lake Erie. You can dip a toe in the water and know that you’ve completed the entire cross-state journey on the Ohio to Erie Trail!

Meet your shuttle in Edgewater Park to return to Cincinnati, or spend time in Cleveland before returning on the shuttle. (Riders can also choose to shuttle at the start, rather than the end, of their trip.)

Riding the Ohio to Erie Trail

The trail can be ridden between May and October, as dictated by weather and trail conditions.

Spring on the OTET is a wonderful way to restart your cycling season. May can have periods of rain followed by periods of gorgeous spring sunshine. Spring flowers are found all along the trail and add a special color to your trip.

Summer can be a great time to ride for those who do not mind the heat. A good portion of the route is unshaded and the heat can be a factor, so those who prefer cooler riding temps should plan for spring or fall dates.

September and October is peak season on the trail. Fall foliage occurs generally in early to mid-October, although exact dates do vary each year.

Bike rental is not available at this time. (If bringing your own, e-bikes are permitted on the trail.)

The Ohio to Erie Trail can be ridden in either direction and there is no particularly favorable direction. The elevation gains are roughly equal either way; the climbing is more pronounced in the northern half of the route.

Generally the wind direction is from the southwest, so traveling northbound can provide a tailwind in some sections, but this is not a predominate factor along the length of the trail.

We suggest you choose your riding direction based on travel logistics – that is, where you prefer to leave a vehicle and whether you want to start or end at that vehicle. Our trip coordinators are happy to talk through those details with you.

The OTET passes through small towns, large cities, and rural farmlands. Cell phone reception is reasonably strong across the route. The rail-trail segments often have trailheads with water and port-a-johns. Other sections will have convenience stores and gas stations for water and food.

The Ohio to Erie Trail is primarily a paved trail with some short sections of crushed gravel; the Ohio Towpath Trail through Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the longest section of crushed gravel.

We recommend hybrid/touring/gravel bikes with at least 28 mm-wide tires and minimal tread for a mix of speed and comfort. Experienced riders may prefer narrower tires given that the majority of the route is paved, provided they are confident with their bike handling on gravel and crushed limestone.

Tandems, trikes, recumbents and other non-standard frames are also suitable for the OTET. However, since the route does involve on-road riding with traffic, some riders may feel less comfortable on frames that are low to the ground.

Three Guardians takeaways after wild cap to weekend series with Yankees

CLEVELAND — In the 10th inning Sunday, with the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians exchanging haymakers in a chaotic series finale, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt turned to his bench coach and smiled.

“This is awesome,” Vogt said to Craig Albernaz.

Vogt has steered the Guardians to a 10-5 start. His club skidded through a doubleheader against the Yankees on Saturday but rebounded to salvage a wild 8-7 win Sunday. Vogt has been tested in his first two weeks as manager, navigating through injuries and inconsistent starting pitching while juggling how to deploy a cast of unproven position players. Sunday’s game pushed him even more, as Vogt cycled through relievers, emptied his bench and shifted guys around the diamond.

He relished every second of it.

“Of course it means a lot and it’s high intensity,” he said, “but it’s such a fun game.”

Comeback kids

As Logan Allen and an army of relievers cooled down in the clubhouse following their outings Sunday, they lived and died by the roar of the crowd. The fans’ reactions revealed what had unfolded on the field before the delayed broadcast on the clubhouse TVs did. The constant back-and-forth in the final few innings kept the pitchers guessing.

After the Guardians pulled off another come-from-behind win — this one requiring a pair of late-inning charges — players shouted “We don’t quit!” as they retreated to the clubhouse through the dugout tunnel. It was the theme of the week: The Guardians trailed at least 3-0 in each of the final five games of their homestand. They pulled out wins in two of them, both in 10 innings. In only one game were they decidedly defeated. It’s the sort of habit that shortens the lifespan of a manager or fan.

The rotation has been Cleveland’s weak link, a primary explanation for the sluggish starts. It obviously doesn’t help when the club’s ace, Shane Bieber , is home in Arizona with his right elbow in a protective contraption. Xzavion Curry and Ben Lively will join the rotation this week at Fenway Park, starting Monday and Wednesday, respectively. Cleveland’s starters are averaging fewer than five innings per start (72 2/3 innings in 15 games), which isn’t a healthy trend. The team needs more from Triston McKenzie and Tanner Bibee .

Credit the bullpen for keeping opposing lineups at bay, granting the offense a chance to mount a comeback. Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith have combined for 16 2/3 scoreless innings, just as everyone expected. The Guardians’ bullpen owns a 1.88 ERA as a whole.

Double duty

Vogt was beaming about the double play that ended the Yankees’ half of the 10th, a prototypical 3-2-3 twin killing to neutralize another scoring threat. The longtime catcher — who also moonlighted as a first baseman and corner outfielder — lauded the athleticism demonstrated by two catchers: David Fry and Bo Naylor .

Fry placed a perfect throw to the plate, where Naylor applied the tag, pirouetted and whipped a throw back to Fry, who scooped the one-hopper for the second out (and third of the inning). Fry, who shifted from first to catcher back to first during the game, credited Naylor’s presence of mind to even consider a throw to first while completing the tag at the plate.

“For (Fry) to make that throw on the run,” Vogt said, “and to have the IQ to get back to first base and for Bo to sweep tag, apply the tag, spin and throw it back — the amount of athleticism and baseball IQ in that play probably won’t get talked about enough. That should be No. 1 on ‘SportsCenter,’ MLB . Whatever the top plays are, that should be the top play.”

Revenge tour

Estevan Florial entered the interview room Sunday, and Fry yelled, “Revenge tour, baby!” Florial had one home run in 48 big-league games over parts of four seasons with the Yankees. Then he socked two homers in 24 hours against his former team, including a go-ahead shot in the eighth inning Sunday.

With those two hacks, Florial boosted his wRC+ to 154 (meaning he’s been 54 percent more productive than the league-average hitter this season). Let’s toast to tiny, early-season sample sizes. Florial has totaled only 25 plate appearances. He’s had four walks, 10 strikeouts and those two homers, an apt demonstration of his skills and deficiencies.

“He makes really good swing decisions,” Vogt said. “He does punch out, but … there’s a big reason why he’s with us: the quality of his at-bats.”

The Guardians knew this would be an experiment when they traded pitcher Cody Morris for Florial over the winter, but with so few answers in the outfield, they felt it was a gamble worth taking. Before Saturday night, they had witnessed much of what the Yankees saw in brief spurts. Then he homered in consecutive games against New York to remind everyone why he was once a top prospect, why he’s able to produce silly numbers at Triple A and why teams can’t quit him. The question is whether he can find some modicum of consistency.

This team desperately needs someone other than Steven Kwan to emerge in the outfield. Tyler Freeman and Will Brennan are off to rough starts. Aside from some walks and wielding a rocket arm, Ramón Laureano hasn’t offered much yet. There’s ample opportunity for someone to get in a rhythm and seize regular playing time. Maybe Florial will be the one.

“The swings have been better and better,” Vogt said.

The Run for the Roses will take place on May 4, 2024 as the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby will celebrate the long history of the famed horse race.
