For the safety of our guides and guests, we have made the tough decision to hold off on providing tours at this time. Many of the places we visit are either closed or at reduced capacity and space is at a premium. While we would love to further help you explore, discover, and connect with this great city, it seems like the best option is to wait until things are back to normal to continue the tours you love.

Please keep an eye on our webpage, or drop us a line ([email protected]) to get notified when tours resume. We'll be launching Crimes, Cons, and Cocktails (Famous Columbus Crimes) and the Boos and Brews (Haunted HIstory) tour again when it's safe.

Ghost tours, scarecrows and more: We found plenty of fun things to do around Columbus on Halloween weekend

columbus haunted tours

The past month of carving pumpkins and watching scary movies has all led up to this: Halloween weekend is upon us!

Greater Columbus has no shortage of activities and events, many appropriate for the whole family . Ghost tours in Westerville and Worthington will keep your mind spinning with spooky stories, and you can learn how to detect paranormal activity at a ghost-hunting event at the main branch of the Pickerington Library.

And if you just want a way to while away a brisk fall afternoon, check out the plethora of scarecrows throughout Fairfield County.

In the highlights that follow, there’s something to keep everyone scared stiff.

Things to do in Columbus: Everything you can do for Halloween in Greater Columbus, from spoofy to spook y

All aboard the Ghost Trolley!

Grab the Ghost Trolley and take off to the woods of Worthington on a just-scary-enough adventure every half hour between 4 and 8 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Ohio Railway Museum , 990 Proprietary Road, Worthington.

“We've got several older cars and trolley decorated up for Halloween with spiderwebs and ghosts and some animated stuff, nothing too scary. It seems to be harder to find non-scary Halloween places for kids,” said Gary Anagnostis, a trustee and board member for the museum.

Visitors will take a 20-minute guided tour through the cars, and then head out on the trolley for a half-hour adventure.

Things to do with kids in Columbus: Boo at the Zoo, corn mazes, hayrides, pumpkin-picking and more fall family fun

“We have a trolley ride that runs over (Route) 161 and back into the woodsy area,” Anagnostis said. “There's a little vagabond camp set up there, and another trolley, dressed up like a ghost trolley.”

Visitors enter the ghost trolley, where they are joined by the vagabonds from the camp, who have some stories to tell.

The Ghost Trolley has been running intermittently since the '80s, and more steadily since 2013.

Tickets cost $10, or free for those younger than 3. (614-885-7345,  www.ohiorailwaymuseum.org )

Uptown Ghost Story Tours offered

If you like ghost stories served with a side of history, check out the Uptown Ghost Story Tours in Westerville. The tours, hosted by performers from Good Medicine Productions, last about 90 minutes. Tours depart, appropriately, from the Otterbein Cemetery, going on to cover 12 sites, including homes and businesses, over about nine blocks in the historical district of Westerville.

The Ghost Tours started in 2019, and took a hiatus over 2020 because of COVID.

“We collected stories from property owners and residents all over the uptown area, the historical area of Westerville. And then we had a history buff go through the stories and see if there's a connection between the stories and what we know of the history of the residents of the houses,” said Lynn Aventino, executive director of Uptown Westerville, which produces the tours.

Ohio ghost stories: Ohio State Reformatory, Malabar Farm among Richland County sites rich in lore

“For example, there are stories about ghosts in the building where the Old Bag of Nails Pub is. It turns out there was a fire there back in the 1800s. Everyone panicked, and three people were killed in the stampede, one woman and two children. They think the ghosts may be the two children, a boy and a girl,” Aventino said.

All the ghost stories relayed during the event have some sort of historical connection to the homes and businesses included on the tour, which has drawn people from all over the state and out of state.

Tours, which can be booked online and are limited to about 18 participants, depart at 7 and 9 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30 and 7 p.m. Oct. 31. Masks are recommended for the tours. Tickets cost $23. ( www.uptownwestervilleinc.com )

Scarecrows descend on Fairfield County

All month long, Fairfield County has hosted the free “Trail of Scarecrows,” in which residents and business people craft scarecrows and show them off in displays in front of their homes or businesses. The scarecrows can be found in various spots in 14 communities, including Lancaster, Lithopolis, Pickerington and Sugar Grove.

“Everybody creates their own scarecrow,” said Fran Tharp of Visit Fairfield County. “That’s one of the most remarkable things about this trail for me: to see how creative some of these people are.”

By visiting the website  www.visitfairfieldcounty.org , visitors can select which community they would like to visit and follow a map that marks each scarecrow stop on their journey. Some communities, such as Lancaster, allow for walking between scarecrows; more rural areas, such as Amanda or Rushville, require driving.

Haunted houses in Columbus: 6 haunted attractions that will bring the scares this Halloween in Greater Columbus

“This is our third year to do it countywide,” Tharp said. “It’s a great way to bring people in from all over the place.”

But don’t wait: The trail goes cold after the 31st, and by next weekend, all of the scarecrows will be put away for next year. ( www.visitfairfieldcounty.org )

Other highlights

‘hallebooia’ concert at osu .

Ensembles from the Ohio State University School of Music — including the Bass Studio, Bassoon Studio, Harp Studio and a ukulele ensemble — will make spooky sounds for the 27th edition of “HalleBOOia!” at 8 p.m. Oct. 29 at Hughes Hall Auditorium, 1899 College Road. Pop music, video-game scores and, of course, Halloween-themed tunes will be heard during the free performance. Attendees, who are requested to register in advance at music.osu.edu for contact-tracing purposes, are required to wear masks — and invited to wear costumes. ( music.osu.edu )

Ghost tour in Worthington Historic District

Learn some spooky history at an after-dark ghost tour through Worthington’s Historic District. The tour, which will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28, will begin at the Old Rectory, 50 W. New England Ave., and will include stops at assorted spots throughout the community. Organizers suggest wearing walking shoes and bringing a flashlight. And, since the tour will go on in the event of rain, an umbrella is also recommended — that is, unless you ask the spirits for clear weather. ( www.worthingtonhistory.org )

High-volume Haunted Fest

If Halloween to you means many hours of high decibel music and dancing, check out Haunted Fest. The 18-and-older event will be held from 8 p.m. Oct. 29 to 1:30 a.m. Oct. 30 at the Lausche Building at the Ohio Expo Center, Intersetate 71 and East 17th Avenue. A 90-minute tour of the cemetery will follow the run/walk, and is open both to those who participated and others. The price for those who didn't take part in the run is $45. The crunch of autumn leaves beneath the feet, the vacant window eyes of Victorian houses watching passersby, the crisp fall air (or is it a spirit?) that chills the bones—yes, it is that time of year on Town Street, undoubtedly the most haunted street in Columbus and the place where our 30+ years of ghost-story enhanced architectural tours began!

South High Street is deliciously close to the Scioto River’s dark and bloody past and to some of Columbus’s oldest ghost stories and deepest secrets. Join us for an atmospheric walking tour and hear how the river’s chilling influence has set the tone for ghost stories involving a funeral home, a bakery, a motel, and a juke box that plays itself.

A walking tour of Columbus’ most haunted taverns and the environs of Mound Street, long associated with the architecture and history of Columbus’s criminal past. We’ll stop at three taverns to share tales of the restless site of the old prison and gallows hills, the story of the canal warehouses and Columbus’ Bowery Street, the most “cultured” ghosts of Columbus, the 20th century unsolved murder in a parking garage on an ancient burial mound site, and the true story of Schwartz’s Castle.

There is time at each tavern for enjoying the atmosphere and a drink. Drinks are not included in the price of the tour, but bar bites at one stop, sparkling narration, historic gossip, and architectural knowledge of the taverns is cheerfully included. Tours are led by Doreen Uhas Sauer and/or Tom Betti, co-authors of  Historic Columbus Taverns .

As the oldest neighborhood in Columbus, Franklinton (founded 1797) has the oldest ghost stories and legends in the city. Things go bump in the night in the buildings that withstood the devastating 1913 flood, and early spirits roam “the Bottoms,” as it was known. No wonder Thurston the Magician was born on the West Side, and the apartment he bought for his family still stands. Since spirits are known to be disturbed when change occurs, who better to lead the tour than Jim Sweeney, Columbus Landmarks Foundation trustee and Franklinton storyteller who has lived, breathed, and helped oversee the changes. Head to Strongwater early for dinner before or plan to stop by for a night cap when the tour ends back there.

Buildings surrounding the Statehouse share darker pasts than you might imagine. Business owners who never leave their workplaces; murders committed in fancy hotels; theatres with “ghost lights”; tunnels and more tunnels; ghosts of scorned women; telegraph signals that still transmit; secret gangster lairs; and the truth about the Statehouse—no fake news here, but legends and ghost stories galore. Tour begins inside Ringside so you may want to get there early for dinner or you can order a drink as the stories flow. The tour will head from there on an atmospheric walk around Statehouse square.
