Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, shares her best advice for cruise footwear. "I always pack my Rothy's shoes for any cruise because they're infinitely comfortable, work as both a formal and [an] informal shoe and can be tossed in the laundry if they get dirty." She notes that she has several pairs, but two of her go-to styles are The Point and The Ballet Flat . McDaniel adds that the shoes work in every occasion, from strolling along the ship decks to perusing cobblestone streets on shore. "I bought both [pairs] 5 years ago, and they look as new today as they did out of the box despite literally hundreds of hours of wear," she says.

Jason Leppert, founder of YouTube channel Popular Cruising , always packs his signature Hawaiian shirts to wear day or night. He says, "I love the RSVLTS collection because they can play casually with shorts or more dressy with slacks for dinner."

Formal Nights

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

• Cocktail dresses
• Evening gowns
• Dress shoes

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." Still, Kosciolek is a firm believer that travelers should wear what is most comfortable for them while on vacation. She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

Mikkel Woodruff, editor of cruise site Sometimes Sailing , always brings her Omega Sailing Bracelet on cruises. She says, "I like to bring jewelry that reminds me of the ocean and being on the sea." Woodruff appreciates the bracelet's versatility, noting how easily it can go from shore excursions to formal evenings to everyday activities.

Shore Excursions

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

• Comfortable walking shoes
• Mesh water shoes
• T-shirts or tank tops
• A waterproof jacket

Freelance travel writer David Swanson shares his favorite versatile cruise shoes. He discovered a comfortable pair of Danner multitasking shoes that worked for dinners, casual events and multiple days of cycling on a recent European cruise. "I didn't think I'd find something to do dual duty, but I love this comfy pair from Danner, an outdoor brand [that is] new to me but has been around since 1932," says Swanson.

Paul Thornton, host of The Joy of Cruising Podcast , always packs his Coofandy linen shirts and shorts for hot Caribbean days and breezy cruise ship evenings. Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

• Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
• Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
• Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Carnival Cruise Line Dress Code

• Daytime: Pack casual, comfortable attire to sail with Carnival Cruise Line , such as T-shirts, polo shirts or relaxed tops paired with shorts, capris, khakis or jeans. Athletic wear paired with a lightweight sweater or jacket are suitable for those looking to stay active. 
• "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
• "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.
• Carnival Journeys cruises feature a "Throwback Sea Day," where guests can relive the '80s by day (outfits included) and dress up for a themed Captain's Cocktail Party by night. 
• Cruises between early December and Christmas Day feature an "Ugly Sweater Contest."
• Costumes are suggested for Halloween cruises between the end of September and October. However, when choosing a costume, keep in mind that full masks are prohibited (masks covering half of the face are allowed).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) Bathing suits with cover-ups, T-shirts, tank tops, hats and sunglasses are only appropriate poolside. Cruisers should avoid wearing these items in the dining areas.
• Evening: Most evenings, guests are expected to wear comfortable yet tasteful attire. This entails dresses, skirts, long pants or jeans, stylish tops and button-down shirts. Shorts and flip-flops do not meet the evening dress code. Depending on your voyage, there will be one or two formal nights that require "evening chic" wear. Passengers can dress to impress in formal gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dressy jeans or blazers.

Costa Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: During the day, Costa Cruises ' passengers may wear casual clothing like T-shirts, shorts and sundresses. Beach clothing and flip-flops are not permitted in ship restaurants. Depending on the itinerary, some shore excursions may have specific dress codes.
• Evening: Most nights require resort attire; however, Costa hosts one or two Elegant Evenings per cruise, when men may wear dark suits or tuxedos and women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses.
• Themed Nights: Costa recommends that guests pack white clothing for its White Night events and white, red and green clothing and accessories for its Italy-themed evenings.

Cunard Line Dress Code

• Daytime: Shorts, T-shirts and sundresses are appropriate daytime wardrobe options on sailings with Cunard Line . Swimwear is acceptable by the pool but should not be worn in indoor dining areas.
• Evening: In the evenings, passengers are asked to wear smart attire, which includes dress shirts and trousers for men, and cocktail dresses or sophisticated tops and skirts for women – similar to what you'd choose for dinner at a trendy restaurant or a special occasion. Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code. 
• Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

• Daytime: On Disney Cruise Line sailings, cruise casual attire is acceptable during the day; outfit options include sundresses and shorts and tees. Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in dining venues.
• Evening: After the sun sets, polished attire like collared shirts and jeans without rips are acceptable. Bathing suits, tees, tank tops and sports attire are not allowed. Adult-exclusive dining venues on Disney ships call for elegance; formal or semiformal wear is recommended.
• Themed Nights: On three- and four-night sailings, there is typically a pirate-themed deck party and one optional dress-up night for guests of all ages. Sailings lasting seven nights or longer add one formal and one semiformal night, when women may wear a formal dress or pantsuit and men can opt for a suit or dress pants with a jacket.

Holland America Line Dress Code

• Daytime: Plan on wearing casual attire aboard Holland America Line 's ships during the day. When indoors, guests must wear shirts, cover-ups and footwear.
• Evening: On most nights, smart casual clothing is acceptable. However, in table service restaurants, shorts, bathing suits, distressed jeans and tank tops are prohibited. Grand Voyages cruises host formal nights, when suits and dresses are appropriate.
• Themed Nights: Once per cruise, Holland America hosts an Orange Party in celebration of King's Day. Pack your favorite orange clothing and accessories for this event, which honors the cruise line's Dutch heritage.

MSC Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: Guests of MSC Cruises dress fairly casual during the day in T-shirts and shorts.
• Evening: Collared shirts, dresses and tailored pants are expected at night in the main dining rooms, specialty restaurants and entertainment venues. There is one optional Gala Night, when varying levels of elegance are acceptable. Guests should wear what makes them feel comfortable, ranging from tuxedos or ball gowns to dressy jeans and polo shirts.
• Themed Nights: MSC hosts a White Night Party (where guests wear all white) and a Sunshine Party, where guests don cheerful colors.

Norwegian Cruise Line Dress Code

• Daytime: During the day, plan to wear cruise casual attire like summer dresses, jeans, khakis, shorts and casual shirts on Norwegian Cruise Line voyages. At the buffet and outdoor restaurants, swimwear can be worn with a cover-up and footwear. In dining rooms and specialty restaurants, Norwegian does not permit tank tops for men, jeans with rips or tears, flip-flops, baseball caps or visors.
• Evening: In Norwegian's upscale specialty restaurants, smart casual attire is the norm. Women can wear slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops, while men should opt for jeans or slacks, a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Children ages 12 and younger may wear shorts in all restaurants. On each cruise, there is one particular "Dress-Up or Not Night," when guests can wear fancier clothing (if they choose).
• Themed Nights: Pack an all-white outfit for the White Hot Party and formal attire for Norwegian's Night Out.

Princess Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: In Princess Cruises ' restaurants and public spaces, casual resort wear is required. Shoes must be worn in the dining areas, and pool or beach attire, ball caps and frayed jeans are prohibited in restaurants.
• Evening: On most nights, smart casual attire is acceptable in restaurants. However, on formal evenings, women may wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant pantsuits; while men may opt for tuxedos, dark suits or dinner jackets with slacks. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: Elevated resort wear, including jeans, shorts, T-shirts and tennis shoes, is appropriate before 6 p.m. on Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' ships.
• Evening: At night, elegant casual attire is recommended. Women typically dresses, pantsuits or slacks paired with blouses or sweaters; a collared shirt and dress pants for men is the norm, with the option for sport jackets and ties. On cruises lasting 16 nights or longer, there are two evenings when guests can choose to wear formal or semiformal attire. Wardrobe choices include dark suits and cocktail dresses or tuxedos and gowns. Note: On the last night of every voyage, the dinner dress code is "relaxed casual" to accommodate guests packing for early morning flights.

Royal Caribbean International Dress Code

• Daytime: A relaxed, casual style is acceptable during the day on cruises with Royal Caribbean International . However, swimwear should be limited to the pool deck. 
• Evening: On most nights, guests wear smart casual attire, which includes collared or button-up shirts, dresses, skirts, blouses and pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are encouraged but not required. On formal evenings and for the Chef's Table dining experience, cruisers are expected to wear black-tie attire, which includes tuxedos, suits with ties, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.
• Themed Nights: Offered on cruises lasting four nights or longer, themed nights may include toga parties, masquerade balls, decade themes and black and white nights.

Silversea Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: Casual attire akin to what you'd wear at a five-star resort is suitable during the day aboard Silversea Cruises ' ships.
• Evening: Evening attire is categorized into three groups: casual, informal and formal. On casual evenings, women wear pants, blouses, skirts, and casual dresses, while men wear open-neck shirts and slacks. On informal evenings, ladies often choose dresses or pantsuits, and gentlemen typically wear jackets (ties are optional). Formal night is always optional; if you choose to participate, outfits may include cocktail dresses, gowns, tuxedos and suits. The number of formal nights per cruise varies by voyage length.

Seabourn Cruise Line Dress Code

• Daytime: Casual resort wear like jeans and shorts are welcome in all lounges and dining venues on Seabourn Cruise Lines ' ships. Athletic apparel and swimwear should only be worn in the pool area, on the deck or at the spa and fitness center.
• Evening: After 6 p.m., the dress code is "elegant casual." Men are expected to wear slacks with collared shirts or sweaters (jackets are optional), while women can choose pants, skirts, pantsuits or dresses. Elegant jeans are allowed in all dining venues except The Restaurant. On formal evenings in The Restaurant, men may wear tuxedos, suits or slacks and jackets, while women can opt for evening gowns and cocktail dresses.

Viking Ocean Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: On Viking Ocean Cruises ' ships, casual daytime clothing such as shorts, pants, jeans and comfortable walking shoes are acceptable. Athletic wear including exercise clothing, swimsuits and cover-ups may only be worn in the fitness center, pool zones and sports deck.
• Evening: While there are no dedicated formal nights, the dress code after 6 p.m. calls for elegant casual attire for all dining venues, lounges, bars and theaters. Jeans are not permitted (with the exception of the World Cafe, where the dress code remains casual in the evenings). For women, wardrobe options include dresses, jumpsuits, skirts or slacks paired with elegant tops. Jackets and ties are optional for men, but trousers and collared shirts should be worn in the evenings.

Virgin Voyages Dress Code

• Day or night, cruisers on Virgin Voyages ' ships are encouraged to wear attire that expresses their personal style. Just note: In restaurants, bathing suits are not permitted, and shoes are necessary. There are no formal nights; guests can dress up or down, depending on what makes them feel their best.
• Themed Nights: Pack something scarlet red for the Scarlet Night Party, which occurs once per voyage.

Cruise Outfits to Wear on Your Next Cruise Vacation (2024)

Having trouble figuring out what exactly to wear on a cruise? You’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe.

In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise.

I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same.

You’ll need to consider what you’ll wear on the ship during the day, what you’ll wear on port days, and evening attire- which I’ll cover in this post.

So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits.

Daytime Cruise Outfits

Embarkation day cruise outfits.

The first day of your cruise is exciting! You’re getting accustomed to your new home at sea with lots of exploring and finding a delicious cocktail.

Now before the fun of exploring, keep in mind you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around to get on the ship, plus going through security, and perhaps waiting for your room to be ready.

For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit . Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship.

I wouldn’t worry too much about what to wear on Embarkation day, but having a swimsuit ready to go is a great idea.

Pro Tip: Wear a swimsuit underneath your clothing with a stylish coverup and take advantage of the resort deck pool while everyone gets settled or hits up the buffet. It will feel like you’ve added an extra day on to your cruise!

What to wear on a Cruise Sea Day

Stick to casual clothing during the day on a cruise. A typical sea day on a cruise begins with breakfast, you can wear casual items like t-shirts, jean shorts, etc.

I like to wear cute sets, or shorts and a cute top that’s easy to throw on when heading to the breakfast buffet. This is the least formal part of your cruise, but I would avoid walking around in your pajamas .

After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup .

I always like to bring a larger tote bag so I can stick in all my essentials that I would need for a full pool day like sunscreen, a book, a water bottle, and extra clothes if I decide to swim.

Just think about wearing classic resort casual wear for the daytime.

Now in the early evening after lounging on the resort deck, I like to wear a nice sundress or something a little dressy to have a sunset cocktail in. Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise Excursion

I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions.

For a Caribbean cruise excursion, I would wear a swimsuit plus a coverup , and additional dry clothes if you want to change into something more comfortable after your day in the water, especially for warm destinations.

If you are not headed on a water excursion, wear casual clothing like sundresses , shirts, and shorts in light breathable materials like linen, cotton, or jersey.

Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain.

I took a cooking class in St. Kitts on a cruise excursion. I wore a casual top and shorts and everyone else wore something similar. Keep in mind that Caribbean islands are hot and humid.

What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise Excursion

Here are some Cruise outfit ideas I wore on my Mediterranean cruise excursions in Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro.

If you are going on a Mediterranean cruise, your ports of call and excursions tend to be a bit different than a Caribbean Cruise.

Instead of mostly swim & snorkel excursions you’d find on a Caribbean cruise, Mediterranean cruises have more city sightseeing excursions that involve a lot of walking , touring, and being in a city center.

For example, if you stop in Naples Itay, you could explore the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, and even Pompei which all involve different kinds of daytime outfits.

I like to wear lightweight breathable dresses and comfortable walking shoes with a larger day bag to keep all my essentials inside.

Surprisingly my Birkenstock Arizona sandals were my go-to shoe on all my excursions. I even climbed a mountain in Kotor Montenegro in them and they were still comfortable afterward.

Evening Cruise Outfits

To be honest, I think that the ladies have an easier time with evening cruise outfits because mostly anything goes as long as it’s dressy. Darker-colored sundresses , cocktail dresses , or even pants with a dressy top will work.

Men on the other hand have more rules like long pants and collared shirts.

Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems.

Casual Dinner Outfits

I find that a lot more cruises are ditching formal dinners and instead have an “evening chic” dress code which can mean dressing elegant and sophisticated in your way.

Here are some examples of “casual” dinner cruise outfits. Keep in mind that I like to dress up no matter what the dress code is.

Here is a great example of a casual dinner outfit that doesn’t involve a dress. A pair of nice dark pants and a dressy top and flats will do the job for casual nights.

Formal Dinner Outfits

Here are some examples of formal dinner cruise outfits for the main dining room I’ve worn on recent cruises:

Some cruise lines have “ formal ” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax . Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses.

But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. It’s a great excuse to dress up a little.

Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code.

What to wear on a cruise

No matter if you are going on a Caribbean Cruise or a Mediterranean cruise, here are things you should pack for your next cruise.

Pack sundresses to wear during the day, early evening, and perhaps dinner. These can be flowy maxi dresses or shorter styles. My favorite Amazon Maxi dress looks more expensive than it is and works great on a cruise.

Bonus tip: find dresses in non-wrinkle materials such as jersey material so you won’t have to worry about trying to get the wrinkles out.

Swimwear & Cover-ups:

You will be living in a swimsuit & coverup on your cruise, so be sure you bring your favorites. I love this one piece from Amazon . It’s flattering on any body type, comes in multiple colors, and looks expensive.

This beach coverup from Amazon is also one of my favorites. It’s in a nice cotton gauze-like material and looks so sophisticated.

Lightweight Jacket / Scarf

No matter when or where your cruise is, a lightweight jacket is a good idea for added warmth on cooler nights or heavy inside air conditioning. This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall.

I’d recommend going for an extra-large scarf or sweater that still can be worn over your shoulders during the evening. It’s not too casual and looks dressy, while still keeping you warm.

Dark Pants / Jeans:

Be sure to bring a dark pair of pants or jeans if you don’t want to wear dresses to dinner. Dark pant goes with any dressy top, and it’s a basic you can wear more than once on your cruise.

Evening Dress

A nice evening dress is essential for any cruise. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack.

A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet – especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion.

You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea.

A great compromise is a shorter kitten heel, a wedge, or a dressy flat.

A pair of white sneakers go with everything and are comfortable to put on after wearing sandals for so many days. These are great to have for strenuous activities, adventurous excursions, and exploring ports of call.

Sun Hat & Pair of Sunglasses

Don’t forget your accessories like a sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. To avoid your hat getting blown away by the wind, find one with a chin strap.

You’d be surprised at how many things you need to bring with you when you leave your cruise cabin.

I love bringing a stylish tote bag to throw all my essentials for the day inside like sunscreen, book, phone or tablet, an extra change of clothes, towel, etc.

Mens Cruise Outfits

I can’t leave the men hanging, so here are some men’s cruise outfit ideas:

Men’s Day Outfits

During the day, men can wear casual clothing like swim trunks and a neutral shirt that is acceptable for the breakfast buffet and the resort deck.

Men’s Evening Cruise Outfits

Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men.

Cruises suggest men wear in general long pants or nice jeans, a collared dress shirt, and dress shoes.

I would pack two outfits per day on a cruise- something to wear during the day either on board or at a port of call, and something a bit dressier for the evening. Now you can wear a swimsuit & coverup more than once on your vacation, so keep that in mind when you’re packing.

Do you dress up for dinner on a cruise?

Generally yes, you do dress up for dinner on a cruise. However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner.

What are the best clothes to wear on a cruise?

You’ll want to wear something comfortable and casual during the day. Don’t forget your swimsuit for excursions or lounging at the resort deck. And add something a bit dressy for the evening.

What NOT to wear on a cruise?

Now there are a few things not to wear on a cruise that pertain mostly to the evening. Flip flops, swimsuits tank tops, and shorts are generally not allowed inside restaurants during dinner.

Another thing to keep in mind is your footwear. Cruise ships are huge and you’ll be doing a surprising amount of walking (especially if your cabin is on the opposite of the buffet) Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in like super high heels , etc.

T hough it's tempting to pack everything, cruise outfits are meant to be laid-back, so plan to wear a few items of clothing more than once — no one will judge you, promise. Pack a few key staple pieces that can be paired together in several different mix and match styles — this is called a capsule wardrobe. To ensure you can put together a great outfit each day, pack mindfully in one color palette or scheme — colors like red, coral and yellow will pop in pictures when photographed in front of a turquoise sea. If you're wondering what to pack for a five-day cruise, bring along six shirts, six sets of underwear, and three to four bottoms. Then, throw in at least two swimsuits, so you always have one dry. Finally, pajamas, a jacket or sweater, athleisure wear, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, athletic shoes, and dress shoes round out a perfect cruise outfit packing list.

A flowy top or polo shirt, bright-colored capris or khaki shorts, comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat will keep you cool during the day. When the sun goes down, dress it up with a button-down shirt, shawl or cardigan.

2. Onboard Ensemble

For days spent at sea, you'll want cruise attire that's comfortable and convertible. A swimsuit underneath a sundress or flowy shirt and shorts is an outfit that will take you from the pool to the spa to the mini golf course and beyond. When it's time for dinner, swap your shorts for trousers and slip on dressy sandals or closed-toe shoes. If you're cruising with your kids, be prepared for spills and stains with an extra shirt.

During the day, wear athletic shorts, a neutral-colored tank top, and sneakers or sandals. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved sun shirt in your day bag. Need to dress up for dinner? It's simple. Pack extra clothes in a tote bag in case you don't have time to go back to your stateroom. Swap your athletic shorts for a flowy skirt or trousers, and trade your sneakers for a more formal pair of shoes, like chunky heels or loafers for a put-together look.

4. Beach-Day Outfit

For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water. When you're done wading in the water or soaking up the sun, a cover-up like a romper, oversized shirt or dress is always a stylish choice for wandering local shops and grabbing a seaside lunch. Quick-drying swim trunks are the go-to staple for this cruise outfit and is a perfect choice for kids. Just throw on a collared shirt and slip-on penny loafers, and you're good to go.

For dinner reservations, add an air of tropical elegance with a pair of wide-legged linen trousers or chinos in a solid color, paired with a linen top in a colorful print and some timeless accessories like a gauzy scarf, dangling necklace, a sleek watch or large sunglasses.

Make sure your cruise packing list includes a lightweight bag for your book, sun protection, wallet, camera, phone and a foldable dry bag tucked inside. When you're done swimming, you can stow your swimwear away in the dry bag without getting the rest of your items wet.

5. Sightseeing Cruise Outfit

When trying to figure out what to wear on a cruise, it's important to plan ahead and know what your must-dos are for your cruise vacation. For long days jam-packed with historical and natural sights to see, pack fabrics that are breathable and comfortable. What to Wear on a Norwegian Cruise – Freestyle Cruising

Have you been wondering what to wear on a Norwegian Cruise? Norwegian markets their cruises as Freestyle Cruising, but how does this apply to the cruise line dress code?

Norwegian offers a relaxed cruise vacation experience, so you can dress up, or not. The choice is yours! That said, there are still a few guidelines, and even some items that are not permitted in some restaurants and venues on the ship.

In this post we’ll go over what to wear during day and evening on a Norwegian Cruise, as well as special outfits you may want to pack for optional theme nights and parties. 

I’ll also answer some frequently asked questions, share some cruise outfit suggestions and packing tips , so you’ll be 100% prepared for your Norwegian cruise vacation.

NCL Freestyle Dress Code – What to Expect

Norwegian’s freestyle cruising dress code is “cruise casual”. When NCL established freestyle cruising, the idea was to break away from some of the more confining traditions of cruising. This included set dining times and strict dining room dress codes.

During the day, Norwegian Cruise Line’s freestyle dress code is casual. In the evening, depending on where you dine, the dress code is casual or smart casual. There are some additional opportunities to dress up, on special theme nights as well.

What do People Wear on a Norwegian Cruise?

On a Norwegian cruise, you really will see a mix of how people dress. Some people will dress up, like going to a nice restaurant at home. Others will be more casual and stick to shorts and t-shirts.

There are dress guidelines for certain restaurants on Norwegian ships, however there are no formal nights. You can definitely dress as formally as you like, however it’s rare to see gowns and tuxedos. I’d probably save the formal cruise attire for a Cunard or Princess Cruise .

If you enjoy a relaxed cruise vacation , where there are no strict dress codes and other passengers aren’t concerned with what you are wearing – you’ll love cruising with Norwegian!

What to Wear During the Day on a Norwegian Cruise

Norwegian is a fun, casual cruise ship environment, especially during the day. If you’re on a Caribbean cruise , or any warm weather destination, make sure to pack your sundresses, shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, a bathing suit and cover up, and flip flops or sandals.

When you head indoors, even to eat at the buffet, you’ll need to put on a cover up over your bathing suit, as well as footwear.

Needless to say, be prepared to dress for the weather. If you’re on a cool weather cruise, like Alaska , dress comfortably, casually and warm. Jeans and a sweater or a hoodie and track pants are just fine.

Tip: Always pack comfortable running shoes or sneakers and socks for adults and kids. Many of the activities on Norwegian cruise ships will require proper footwear (racing cars, ropes course, etc.)

Dinner Attire on a Norwegian Cruise

If you are planning to have dinner in the main dining room or one of their “fancier” specialty restaurants, Norwegian’s evening dress code is smart casual. This includes popular favorites like Le Bistro (french cuisine) and Teppenyaki (Japanese fare). 

Smart Casual Dress Code – Formal dining room & upscale restaurants

For women, smart casual includes dresses, skirts and tops, capri pants and jeans. Ladies, don’t forget to pack a light shawl or sweater, as the ship’s air conditioning may feel cool in the evening.

For men, jeans or khakis with a polo style or short sleeve dress shirt are perfect, along with closed toe shoes (no sandals or flip flops). Children 12 and under can wear nice shorts in all restaurants.

Tip: Make sure to reserve your favorite specialty restaurants early as they do fill up.

Casual Dress Code – Buffet and casual restaurants

Casual dress is appropriate for the buffet, casual restaurants and most areas on Norwegian cruise ships. 

For women, this includes casual dresses and skirts, shorts and t-shirts, capri pants and jeans. For men, casual pants, jeans, shorts and t-shirts or polo style shirts are perfect. Do remember to bring a cover up for swimwear if heading to the buffet or outdoor restaurant, as well as shoes (sandals and flip flops are fine).

Norwegian cruise ships have many casual restaurants to choose from, beyond your typical cruise ship buffet. You’ll find American style food and more.

Tip: Make sure to try the delicious pub food food and snacks at NCL’s 24 hour O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Pub. Available on more than half their ships, this casual resto has great food – but you must try their wings!! So good. 

Outfits to Bring for Theme Parties

You might be wondering if you can dress up on a Norwegian cruise. You sure can! 

On most Norwegian cruises, you’ll have “Norwegian Night Out”, which is Norwegian’s take on a cruise formal night. While gowns and tuxedo’s would be a rare sight on a Freestyle cruise, getting dressed up in your best party clothes or dinner outfit is not.

Norwegian Night Out is an opportunity to get a bit glammed up for the evening. It can be a great time to reserve at one of the specialty restaurants and even have a professional photo taken by the ship’s photographers. 

Another fun night is the White Hot Party. Dress in white and be prepared to “glow” as you dance the night away under the stars.

What to Wear on Cruise Shore Excursions

If you’re heading to the beach or going on a snorkeling excursion, it’s a good idea to wear a bathing suit under a cover up, casual sundress or a tank top and shorts. Don’t forget your flip flops or water shoes (for rocky beaches).

If you’re sightseeing or shopping, ladies may want to wear a sundress, t-shirt and shorts, or jeans and a cute top. Don’t forget to wear comfortable sneakers or sandals. Always pack a light scarf, shawl or cardigan in case you encounter air conditioning or go into a religious building (church or synagogue) and need to cover your shoulders.

Men should pack shorts and a short sleeve shirt or polo. Remember comfortable shoes and socks if you’re walking for more than a few minutes.

What Not to Wear on a Norwegian Cruise

Norwegian Cruise Line’s dress code is very casual and relaxed, however, there are some items of clothing that aren’t allowed in certain venues.

Swimwear, baseball caps, tank tops for men, and ripped or very worn jeans are not appropriate for the main dining rooms and specialty restaurants. Always wear a bathing suit cover up and footwear when indoors.

Here are some outfit suggestions for your Norwegian Cruise, for both day and evening. 

I love maxi dresses that are comfortable and casual enough for day, but also versatile enough to be worn in the cruise ship’s dining room in the evening.

I’ve had to dress up for work most of my life so I was really happy when Norwegian changed to freestyle and casual. It tended to me to make the cruise more of a vacation. I have been on many different cruise lines and have enjoyed the “dress up if you want to” type cruise on RCCL, Carnival, Princess, and Norwegian. While Princess does have a formal night, you don’t have to get all dressed up if you don’t want to but you will stick out. I don’t mind sticking out because I dislike having to wear a suit and tie however most people on Princess do get all gussied up.

That’s a great perspective. Norwegian definitely shook things up years ago when they made dressing up an option rather than a requirement on a cruise. We quite liked our Norwegian Cruises. You have a good point about Princess. In our experience most people dressed up on formal nights in cocktail dresses and suits, although some dressed much less and this never bothers me at all.

You summed it up! After about nine cruises on NCL, we only dressed up once…way back in the day on NCL Majesty. The ship and those we met on her still are a highlight for us. I have to admit I do enjoy the casual atmosphere of NCL which is why we still book this cruiseline. I admit that throwing on capri pants with a nice blouse goes a long way for me. The husband just likes no tie and jacket. I have to admit we love MSC, even if we have to dress up!

How nice! Somehow our early cruise memories really are precious! I’m enjoying a relaxed atmosphere more as well, at least most nights. I still like to “dress up” a bit too, and NCL is perfect when I want to. Hubby prefers to leave the suit at home… I admit lol. Thanks for the awesome comments and advice Linda

Formal night on a cruise is a classic tradition, but for many passengers, it can also lead to lots of questions. Do I have to dress up? What can I wear? When are the formal nights?

We’ve taken dozens of cruise and know that for those unfamiliar with formal night, it can feel a bit unnerving trying to figure out the ins and outs of dressing up. No one wants to head to dinner underdressed. At the same time, some people don’t want to dress up at all and prefer to know what other options they have.

Below, we’ve covered some of the most frequent questions about formal night on a cruise.

What Is a Cruise Formal Night?

Just as the name implies, formal night is the evening on the cruise when the dress code goes from the casual style that’s normal around the ship to more elegant. It’s a chance for passengers on the ship to put on their best and have an evening out that feels more special than just going to grab dinner in the dining room.

You’ll find people around the ship dressed up, having drinks, taking formal pictures, and enjoying dinner and a show. Think of it as a special event where many passengers have an elegant “date night” that’s more memorable than just another dinner on the ship.

Do I Have to Dress Up?

Absolutely not. Your cruise is your own. If you don’t want to dress up for the evening, then you certainly don’t have to do so. Many people choose to keep it casual. If you decide that shorts and a t-shirt are as formal as you want to get, you won’t be alone.

However, if you do decide to not dress up, it’s a good idea to dine outside of the main dining room or higher-end specialty restaurants. These are spots that request nicer dress during formal night.

Even if casual dress is allowed in the dining room during formal night, you might feel out of place with others wearing suits or evening gowns.

What Can I Wear to Formal Night? Do I Have to Wear a Tux or an Evening Gown?

Perhaps the biggest question around formal night on a cruise is what to wear. What’s acceptable is wide-ranging. No, you don’t have to go out and get a tuxedo or a formal evening gown unless you want to.

For instance, you can go all out and dress up in your best. And you will see some people around the cruise ship go this route. But you don’t have to wear a suit or tux to enjoy the evening.

Women can simply wear a cocktail dress or a nice blouse with pants. For men, it’s fine to wear a suit, or even a buttoned-down shirt and a pair of slacks if you don’t want to get too fancy. Nice jeans would also be ok, although we’d suggest something slightly more dressy.

That said, not everything goes. There are some clothing items to avoid if you plan to eat in the dining room on formal night. This includes shorts, tank-tops, t-shirts, and swimsuits, as well as flip-flops. If you’d wear it to the pool or the beach, you don’t want to wear it to formal night.

Is The Dress Code Strictly Enforced?

Don’t worry, you aren’t likely to be denied entry to the dining room, even if you are dressed casually. It’s not like an exclusive nightclub that bars entry.

While the name might be “formal” or “elegant” night, you won’t be out of place as long as you dress nicer than a t-shirt and shorts. Remember, the cruise lines want you to enjoy yourself and not be worried about if you should be in a tuxedo.

For that reason, as long as you avoid wearing something very casual (e.g. flip flops, shorts, and a tank top), it’s likely to be no issue. Even so, we’d highly recommend dressing up somewhat if you plan on eating in a dining room or a nicer specialty restaurant. Not only will you feel more comfortable around others who are dressed up, but it also adds to the atmosphere of formal night for others.

Where Should I Eat If I Don’t Dress Up?

While the main dining room is the spot for formal eating during the evening, you won’t go hungry if you decide not to take part in dressing up. Every cruise ship offers a number of different places to eat, with many casual dining options for those who aren’t getting fancy for the evening.

For instance, instead of the main dining room you can head to the buffet or one of the 24-hour restaurants around the ship. The restaurant’s atmosphere will give you an idea of if it’s ok to eat there dressed casually or not. The fancy steakhouse? You want to go formal. The spot serving pizza? Shorts and a t-shirt are just fine.

Is Formal Night For Everywhere on the Ship?

While you’ll definitely see people dressed up all around the ship, the only place where you’ll find any sort of suggested or required dress code is in the dining room and/or specialty restaurants.

So if you are just hanging out around the ship — having a drink in a bar, playing in the casino, watching an evening show — then you are perfectly fine dressing down. You won’t be the only one. While many people participate in formal night, a considerable chunk of passengers don’t.

How Many Formal Nights Are There During the Cruise?

The number of formal nights varies based on the length of your cruise. The rule of thumb is that a week-long cruise will have two formal nights during the trip (i.e. Day 2 and Day 5). Shorter trips normally have one.

It may be that if you are on a very short cruise (e.g. three days), there might not even be one formal night. For instance, we’ve been on one short cruise with “Wear Your Best” (i.e. the nicest thing you packed) instead of formal night. 

Does Everyone on the Ship Dress Up?

No. If you decide to not dress up, then you certainly won’t be out of place. Many people choose to dress casually and just eat somewhere else other than the main dining room or higher-end restaurants. Even so, formal nights are popular and when you walk around the ship in the evening on one of these nights, there is no mistaking that it’s dressier than normal.

How Will I Know When it Is Formal Night?

Nothing would stop you in your tracks like heading down to dinner in a pair of shorts and then realizing everyone else is dressed up! Fortunately, you’ll get plenty of notice when it is formal night.

The most obvious spot will be with your daily cruise planner delivered to your cabin each day or through the cruise line’s app. There will be some mention of the dinner attire. It may be referred to as “formal” or “cruise elegant” or some other name. They all mean the same thing: Time to get dressed up!

As well, there are almost always announcements from the cruise director throughout the day sharing what is going on during the day and evening. They will usually mention it when it is formal night, so keep an ear out for announcements.

In the worst case, even if you don’t see any notice at all, you will definitely not miss the fact that many people are dressed up when you head to dinner that evening. That should give you a little time to head back to the room and dress up if you want to join in.

Do I Need to Dress Up at Any Other Time Than Formal Night?

For the most part, the only time you’ll need to dress anything other than casual is if you participate in formal night. That said, there are some spots where some nicer clothes are a good idea even if that evening’s dress code is casual.

Specifically, if you plan to visit any of the higher-end specialty restaurants on the ship, such as the steakhouse, then there may be a dress code.

Even if there is not, dressing up to fit the style of the restaurant is smart. So while it’s ok to dress casually at a burger joint on the ship, you’ll want to dress a little nicer if you go to the formal Italian or seafood spot for dinner.

Bottom Line on Cruise Formal Nights

The formal nights on a cruise are a fun way to do things a little differently. If you’re not someone that gets dressed up often, don’t worry. The rules around what’s formal and what’s not are flexible. As long as you make some sort of effort to dress a little nice, you’ll be fine. And if you want to go all out, you won’t be alone!

If you’re someone who likes to keep things casual, then that’s no issue either. While we’d suggest not eating the main dining room or nicer specialty restaurants on that night, you can wear what you want around the ship.

I dressed up in an old maxi dress that was really oversized that I found from my daughter’s wedding 9 years ago. It was so flowing and pretty, so heck YEAH I wore it! Perhaps one of the most understated joys of cruising is that you only have to unpack once. The challenge lies in what to pack in the first place. While some may say that guys have it easier than women, choosing the right cruisewear for men can be just as tricky.

No matter the destination, men will need certain clothing essentials for a cruise that they might not need for other vacations. This can range from attire for formal or themed nights to the right outfits for a range of activities in port.

What should men wear during the day on a cruise?

Most cruises are casual getaways during the day. Pack and dress for the kind of activities you'll enjoy on board, whether it's lounging at the pool (a rash guard, swim trunks, flip-flops and a hat), sweating it out in the gym (athleticwear and sneakers) or hanging out with a book or card game in a lounge (shorts or jeans and a comfortable top).

Daytime dress can be a bit more elevated on Europe cruises, as well as ships with older or wealthier clientele. This more refined style can best be described as resort casual, where you'll find mostly polos and collared shirts during the day. Linen or khaki pants or Bermuda shorts complete the look.

Don't forget to pack appropriate clothing for activities in port. You'll want to dress in layers, bring a hat for sun protection, a jacket or vest for cool mornings or windy afternoons, and wear sturdy shoes for hikes or sneakers for exploring a town. Tote around beach flip-flops for a quick change if you're mixing up beach time with excursions that require more walking.

What's acceptable attire for men for dinner on casual evenings?

Across all cruise lines, table service dinners will always feel more elevated, often the only time of day when a dress code is clearly communicated. That said, casual evenings have become more casual, especially on the big-ship lines – which can be a relief to men who don't want to schlep their workweek suits on vacation with them.

As a general guideline, if you're at a table service restaurant for dinner (whether it be the main dining room or a specialty restaurant on board), men should dress in a collared shirt and long pants. Jeans tend to be acceptable on casual evenings, as long as they're not riddled with holes, and on some lines, like always-relaxed Norwegian Cruise Line, a nice T-shirt is fine. (A fitted T-shirt with a jacket over it is never a problem.)

What you can't wear, according to the dinner dress code on most lines, are bathing suits, cutoff jeans, sleeveless shirts and baseball hats.

Shorts are an ambiguous, often frowned upon, option for evening attire. Most dress codes won't specifically prohibit shorts, leaving it up to the individual. A pair of chino, pleated or linen shorts can suffice for a more refined look, especially when paired with a collared shirt. Cutoffs, denim, cargo shorts and sports shorts at any seated, table service dinner are a no-go.

As for shoes, sneakers can be permissible on nonformal nights, but footwear like beach flip-flops are often prohibited.

While teens should emulate the grown-ups for dinnerwear, most cruise lines don't fuss about the dress code for younger boys. If you can't get your kid into a polo shirt and khakis, a clean shirt and nonathletic shorts will suffice.

If you'd rather spend your evening in gym shorts and flip-flops, the buffet and other fast casual or counter-service venues will have more relaxed dress codes at night. Or, you can order room service and enjoy dinner in your bathrobe.

Are formal nights still a thing? Will I need to bring a tuxedo?

Most major cruise lines hold formal nights, usually twice on a weeklong sailing. These days, the theme is more "dress your best" or "elegant" than strictly formal. Even on big-ship cruise lines, guests find it fun to don a more upscale look, pose for a professional photo shoot and enjoy dinner, drinks and perhaps a show in style.

Formal nights on most lines don't mean black tie. On casual lines, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, men can get away with a button-down, long-sleeve shirt, khakis, nice shoes and no tie. On more upscale lines, guys should pack a suit or at least a sports coat and slacks. Ties are usually optional.

When in doubt, pack a jacket you can always take off if no one else is wearing one.

Some cruise lines, however, skew a bit fancier. Cunard features black-tie galas on its sailings that are often themed (think Roaring '20s and Masquerade Ball). P&O Cruises typically has signature black-tie evenings, and many smaller luxury lines (including Silversea, Seabourn and Regent) will host black-tie evenings throughout extended sailings.

While full tuxedo regalia on black-tie evenings is encouraged (satin lapel, pocket trim, satin side stripe down the leg of the trousers), a dark suit and necktie pass muster.

Also, culturally appropriate formal attire is always an option, such as Scottish kilt suits or military dress uniforms.

If you're traveling with family, boys and teenagers are required to dress in accordance with the guidelines for dining at table service restaurants on formal nights as well, but the stakes are lower. The minimum requirement for kids is nice slacks and a collared shirt. Teens should opt for dress shoes, but younger boys can get away with sneakers.

If you're taking family photos, tuxedos, suits, blazers and ties are not required but add flare and personality to a look. Get creative with kids who prefer comfort; put babies in a tuxedo-print onesie and young boys in an adorable sweater vest on formal evenings.

On some lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , elegant night is always optional.

Do guys need to dress up on theme nights?

Many cruise lines will have themed evenings or parties where you might want to dress the part. If you're attending a themed cruise (such as a gay cruise or music cruise ), be prepared for costume parties on multiple nights.

Popular theme nights are wide-ranging, though the most recurring are tropical parties (Hawaiian shirts encouraged), '80s nights and white nights (all-white attire).

Disney Cruise Line passengers regularly dress up for its hallmark Pirate Night. Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Night encourages guests to don red attire.

Themed attire on theme nights is not required for dining and is opt-in fun. If you're traveling with a group, organizing matching costumes or outfits can enhance the fun and make for great vacation photos. Check with your cruise line about which theme nights you should expect.

When in doubt, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed, especially when arriving for a seated dinner. Better to pack the tie and jacket and ditch them if no one else is wearing them than to risk awkward conversations with the crew or side-eye from other diners if you're not in compliance with the attire policy.

What is the onboard dress code?

Whatever the itinerary, destination, or occasion—when you pack, think casual chic.

DURING THE DAY

For warmer climates, pack swimsuits and cover-ups, walking shorts and shirts that protect from the sun, lightweight slacks, skirts or sundress, and a light sweater or jacket. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are always encouraged.

For cooler climates, bring clothing with long sleeves, sweaters, and pants that can be layered. In areas prone to snow or rain, waterproof jackets, hats, gloves, and umbrellas are recommended. 

Around the globe, consider appropriate shoes and gear for the excursions you have planned and the terrain you’ll encounter. For instance, you may pack water shoes if hiking a waterfall or a headscarf or conservative dress for visiting museums, mosques, temples, and churches. 

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. Make sure you bring active wear and sneakers if you plan to hit the gym!

Poolside, bathing suits with coverups, T-shirts, tanks, hats, and sunglasses are welcomed. 

In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

SMART CASUAL 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jean, and stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

EVENING CHIC

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jean, an elegant dress top or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. The Daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and theater.

A look at the White House state dinner for Japan's prime minister in photos

A spring-themed menu inspired by American and Japanese cuisine and decor evocative of a koi pond were all features of Wednesday night's White House state dinner honoring Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife.

President Biden and first lady Jill Biden recognized the long alliance between the United States and Japan with the rare, time-honored tradition of a state dinner that draws from the traditions of both countries. 

Singer-songwriter Paul Simon, who counts both the first lady and the prime minister as fans, performed. 

Former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Robert DeNiro, and billionaire Jeff Bezos were all on the guest list. 

The theme and decor 

The theme was "celebration of spring," a symbol meant to mirror the friendship between the two countries. A garden displayed blooms native to both nations, including sweet peas, peonies and hydrangeas. Glass and silk butterflies appeared on the dinner tables, too. 

The starring element of the decor for the dinner was the floor, covered to make it appear as if guests are walking over a koi pond with lily pads and cherry blossoms. The colors green, blue and pink were central to the theme — green to represent the growth of friendship, blue to represent stability and security and pink to represent spring's essence. 

The food is the center of any good state dinner. According to the White House, guests were served a first course of house-cured salmon; a salad of avocados, red grapefruit, watermelon radish and cucumber; and shiso leaf fritters.

Dry-aged rib eye steak with blistered shishito pepper butter, fava beans, morels and cipollini was the main course, with a sesame oil sabayon. 

Dessert included salted caramel pistachio cake, a matcha ganache; and ice cream — cherry ice cream, with raspberry drizzle. 

The evening's wines were from Oregon and Washington.

Lauren Sánchez waltzed into 1600 Penn. Ave with her fiancé Jeff Bezos in hand — but it was her racy corset dress that turned heads at Wednesday’s lavish state dinner.

The former journalist, 54, rocked a red gown that featured a plunging neckline adorned with lace.

The off-the-shoulder Rasario dress ($2,200) also featured corset-like boning and a floor-length silk skirt.

She completed her risqué ensemble with a pair of Gianvito Rossi Flavia mirrored leather pumps ($1,200).

Sánchez let her hair flow behind her ears, revealing her huge diamond earrings. She topped off her look with a sparkly clutch.

The philanthropist’s outfit was far riskier than what guests typically wear to a White House state dinner, where guests often opt for formal, buttoned-up outfits.

For his part, the billionaire Amazon founder and Washington Post owner opted for a black tuxedo paired with a silk bowtie atop a crisp white shirt.

Sánchez and Bezos, 60, rubbed elbows with a handful of famous faces and important figures.

The black-tie event honored Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko as President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden served as hosts.

Legendary actor Robert De Niro and his girlfriend Tiffany Chen were also in attendance, as well as Apple CEO Tim Cook, VP Lisa Jackson, and Japanese American Olympic medalists Kristi Yamaguchi and Alex and Maia Shibutani.

Upon arrival, attendees were welcomed in the White House East Room, where more than 200 guests dined on house-cured salmon and dry-aged rib-eye steak.

JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, spotted with wine glass in hand ahead of Biden and Kishida giving introductory toasts, were also toward the center of the room.

“We both remember the choices that were made to forge a friendship,” Biden, 81, said during his toast. “We both remember the hard work, what it has done to find healing.”

“Tonight,” the president continued, “We pledge to keep going.”

Paul Simon, 82, provided the evening’s entertainment in the State Dining Room — beginning shortly after 10 p.m. with the songs “Graceland” and “Slip Slidin’ Away.”

The former Simon & Garfunkel singer is said to be a favorite of the First Lady’s.

Just days ago, Sánchez and Bezos returned from a trip to Japan where they enjoyed seeing the sights and spending quality time with their blended family.

In images shared on Instagram , Sánchez gave fans a sneak peek into their lavish trip, which included traditional painting, meditation, and several family gym workouts.

She also shared a snap of the cherry blossom trees that are in bloom.

“Japan, you’ve stolen our hearts 🌸,” she captioned the images. “Thank you, Japan, for the memories, the most beautiful sunrises, and those inside jokes 🌀🤍 〰️that’ll stick with us forever. We’re already dreaming of coming back.”

Lauren Sánchez had everyone at the White House seeing red!

The journalist and philanthropist, 54, wore a revealing crimson corset dress to the White House state dinner on Wednesday, April 10. She and fiancé Jeff Bezos , 60, were among the many luminaries invited to the black-tie event honoring Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko.

Sánchez's off-the-shoulder gown featured intricate lace detail, corset-like boning and a floor-length skirt. She complemented the look with metallic open-toe heels.

Her dress was by far the most racy look of the dinner, which is typically a very formal, buttoned-up affair. President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden served as hosts.

According to CBS News , the theme for the event was "a celebration of spring." Guests dined on an East-West menu that included shiso leaf fritters as a starter and dry-aged rib-eye steak with blistered shishito pepper butter, fava beans, morels and cipollini for the main course. Dessert included salted caramel pistachio cake, a matcha ganache, and ice cream.

Sánchez and Bezos recently returned from a trip to Japan, where their blended family explored temples, tried traditional painting and strolled among cherry blossom trees, which are currently in bloom.

"Japan, you’ve stolen our hearts 🌸," she captioned photos from the trip on her Instagram account . "Thank you, Japan, for the memories, the most beautiful sunrises, and those inside jokes 🌀🤍 〰️that’ll stick with us forever. We’re already dreaming of coming back."

According to Google Arts and Culture , red symbolizes good luck and happiness in Japanese culture.

It's also one of Sánchez's go-to colors; she wore a plunging red Lever Couture gown to the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party last month. On the eve of her 54th birthday last December, Sánchez donned a sexy, red, lingerie-inspired look to celebrate with a group of girlfriends -- all of whom also wore red.

Jill Biden’s state dinner dress was subtle. Its message was not.

The first lady’s clothes are never the story but she may be acknowledging, reluctantly, that as the election kicks into gear, that will no longer be the case.

First lady Jill Biden will not be remembered in history for her clothes, as first ladies such as Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and Michelle Obama have been. But that is by design. She eschews the pleasures and expressiveness of fashion, instead standing by a few principles: modesty, tastefulness, relatability.

Biden always looks great. Rarely can more or less be said — which made her blue and beige Oscar de la Renta dress at Wednesday night’s state dinner, for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko Kishida, unusual.

Her ensembles are not memorable, as both Kennedy’s and Melania Trump’s were, nor will they change the popular understanding of clothes, as Obama’s did. They do not tell a tale about glamour as an expression of power, like Reagan’s wardrobe. But Biden’s suits always fit perfectly, and her dresses and taste in prints are inoffensively lovely. They seem suited to what an educator and first lady of the United States should wear in 2024 .

The Style section

The Oscar de la Renta dress she wore at the state dinner shows that she is sharpening her sense of decorum into something like a weapon. On the surface, the dress was an expected choice: She has worn the brand, designed since 2016 by Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, perhaps more than any other, for several formal occasions ( including the December 2022 state dinner for France ), her 2021 Vogue cover and other public appearances that call for a simply charming floral dress.

“It’s kind of surprising, I think, how much commentary is made about what I wear,” she told Vogue in 2021. But Wednesday’s dress felt like a slight pivot in her sartorial strategy. The gown was almost completely beige, with mists of blue at the neck and shoulders. It drew the eye up to Biden’s smiling face and then quickly over to Yuko Kishida, head to toe in bright, bright blue. Who knows whether Biden knew what Kishida would wear ahead of time, but even if she had chosen a different color, the trick still would have worked. It was a visual act of graciousness, furthered by the thematic interiors of the event, with enormous fans, cherry blossoms and a floor designed to look like a koi pond.

The decor was nearly Disneyland-ish (though we are at the tail end of cherry blossom season in Washington), yet Biden’s dress was a more successful visual gesture to demonstrate the Biden style of American alliance. Don’t look at me, Biden’s dress said — look at our guests. They are the center of attention, not America’s power, braggadocio or style.

The dress was subtle, but its message was not.

In fact, several high-profile Democratic women in attendance seemed to undertake heavy-handed fashion diplomacy, especially former first lady and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, in a red kimono-like caftan, and Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen, in a black and white striped evening jacket that, given the occasion, also resembled the Japanese kimono. (Funnily enough, the woman who sidestepped the game altogether, which always verges on the costumey, was Amy Rule, the wife of Rahm Emanuel, American ambassador to Japan. She wore a simple pink tea-length dress with puffed sleeves. Cherry blossom pink, maybe, but not overt.)

The strongest play came from the president’s granddaughter, Naomi Biden Neal, in a cherry blossom print dress with a cape back. From the perspective of pure fashion, she looked lovely. But with the added political context, the message was a bit over the top: We’re! Just! So! Glad! You’re! Here!

Even President Biden’s choice of neckwear seemed like a pointed choice: a necktie in place of a bow tie. Let Prime Minister Kishida have the moment of classic dapperness, it seemed to say.

Not since the inaugural ball in 2021, when Jill Biden wore a Gabriela Hearst dress embroidered with every state and territory’s flower to symbolize political unity , has the first lady so handily put a message into her clothes.

Of course, that was a tense moment, fresh after the tight race and the attempted overthrow of the results just weeks before, when the Biden administration had to make something graceful out of a chaotic country.

Now, though it is not yet official, we are in a kind of remake of that election season, only freighted with new fears. The first lady will soon be in countless photographs that serve as points of comparison between the Biden administration and the possibility of a second Trump era. Though this kind of outfit jousting is certainly not Biden’s cup of tea, every photo will be scrutinized, every look a study in contrasts, and she is savvy enough to know it.

Melania Trump is much more at home in the world of clothes. She is a classicist, in a way — indulgent in luxury brands, a woman who enjoys shopping and the way clothes fit her. The election is certainly no beauty pageant; it won’t be won on outfits. But clothing will be an essential battleground.

Biden will show her consistency and relatability (especially in her willingness to rewear clothes). And now, perhaps an added message of graciousness — that she and her husband represent an America that does not bloviate but instead insists on humility. Melania Trump is rarely seen, though her Garbo-like public profile will make her few appearances even more significant, more fraught with signs and symbols, intended or otherwise.

This is an election that will be fought as much in pictures and posts as anything else — the media and at times the candidates are eager to seize upon anything that paints a contrast.

Perhaps this dinner was an outlier, and Biden will return to her pattern of understatement. But the de la Renta gown felt like a gauntlet thrown.

Takeaways: Bidens host state dinner for Japanese PM Kishida and wife

With glass and silk butterflies adding to the decor and blistered shishito pepper butter slathered on the rib-eye steak, President Joe Biden welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife to a gala state dinner at the White House on Wednesday.

State dinners are often viewed as a glamorous tool in the arsenal of diplomacy, where the charm offensive is unleashed on allies − and even adversaries − with whom greater partnership is desired.

Preparations for the meeting had been underway for some time. A week before the guests arrived, a large, hard-to-miss banner depicting both the U.S. and Japanese flags hung from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building , located next to the West Wing . On Tuesday, First lady Jill Biden previewed the menu and the décor celebrating “the flourishing friendship” between the two countries with the State Floor transforming into a “vibrant spring garden.”

What was the décor like at the state dinner?

Keeping with the spring garden theme, guests sat among a field of flowers, with glass and silk butterflies from both countries “dancing over their tables,” said the first lady.

“Their graceful flight a reminder that as our nations navigate the winds of change, we do so together – as partners in peace and prosperity,” she said.

After dinner, when guests entered the Cross Hall, a broad hallway on the first floor in the White House, they found themselves surrounded by purple, pink and blue hydrangeas, native to Japan and the U.S. Some are as high as six feet tall. A floor covering depicting koi – symbols of friendship, peace, luck and perseverance - completed the look.

The three-course meal led with Japanese-American fusion.

During the preview, White House Executive Chef Cris Comerford said American California roll was the inspiration for the first course — a house-cured salmon with avocados, red grapefruit, watermelon radish and cucumber.

The guests were served a main course of dry-aged rib-eye steak with blistered shishito pepper butter, fricassée of fava beans, morels and cipollini and sesame oil sabayon.

For dessert, guests were treated to salted caramel pistachio cake, matcha ganache, cherry ice cream and a raspberry drizzle.

The dinner was served on china purchased by the Presidents George W. Bush and Lyndon B. Johnson administrations as Grammy-award-winning singer Paul Simon performed for the guests.

Gifts for the Japanese prime minister and wife

As the official gift, the president and first lady presented a three-legged table that was handmade by a Japanese American owned company in Pennsylvania to the Japanese prime minister. The 17-inch table was crafted from American black walnut wood – one of the most precious woods native to North America – and will include a plaque to commemorate the official visit.

Biden also gifted a custom framed lithograph and a two-volume LP set, both of which were autographed by musical artist Billy Joel.

After gifting 3,000 cherry trees more than a century ago, whose blooming has come to define spring in D.C., Japan gifted an additional 250 cherry trees to the U.S. to be planted around the Tidal Basin in Washington, Kishida said Wednesday.

The gift honors the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which the United States will celebrate in 2026.

"And like our friendship, these trees are timeless, inspiring, and thriving," said President Biden.

Making his toast at the dinner, Kishida said: "We are now standing at the turning point in history, embarking on a new frontier led this unshakeable Japan U.S. relationship to even greater heights and hand it to the next generation."
