Teeming with rural villages and vast countryside, Belfast is an explorer’s playground. Cruise to the British Isles and walk through the basalt formations of Giant’s Causeway. Stroll through the Botanic Gardens and observe the park’s Victorian heritage. Or experience true country living in the cottage of a breadmaker, where you can make fresh-baked goods to accompany your afternoon cup of tea.

In a land where fable and fact blend to become folklore, Cork is a beacon of romance among Ireland’s iconic cities. On a British Isles cruise, see the city’s emerald terrains reflected in the lakes of Killarney National Park. Savor an Irish coffee in the 18th-century village of Blarney. Or enjoy a lunch on the hills of Cashel, with the Romanesque architecture of St. Patrick’s Rock as your backdrop.

Experience the best of Irish hospitality on a British Isles cruise to Dublin. Stop by a pub and hear stories of the city from the people who call it home. Tour Trinity College, one of the world’s most famous universities. Or discover the secrets to brewing a stout at the Guinness Storehouse, and sip on a complimentary glass just a few hundred yards from where it’s made.

With centuries of cultural change, Edinburgh is home to a diverse landscape of design. Cruise the British Isles and follow the Royal Mile to the top of Castle Rock, where Edinburgh Castle sits overlooking the city below. Marvel at the expansive collection of artwork in the Royal Yacht Britannia, or shop for souvenirs on Princes Street while admiring the Georgian architecture of New Town.

Once an industrial giant, Glasgow is brimming with treasure. When you cruise the British Isles, wander the halls of Inveraray Castle to see a collection of royal portraits. Watch a kaleidoscopic display in Glasgow Cathedral as the sun pours through the stained-glass windows. Or spend the day admiring armor, weaponry and global gems in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Orkney is home to some of the oldest Neolithic sites in Europe. On a British Isles cruise, history buffs can hear World War II stories at the Italian Chapel. Or travel along Scapa Flow for an even deeper look into the region’s history of naval travel and trade. For those seeking mysteries, uncover secrets of the Ring of Brodgar, part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In a land that inspires love stories, reconnect with loved ones on a British Isles cruise to France. Dock in Le Havre and enjoy a breakfast crepe at a sidewalk cafe. Or embark on a day-long adventure in one of two directions. Visit Paris, where famous artwork awaits, or head to Normandy and see the D-Day beaches or the tidal island of Mont Saint Michel. From the painted portraits to the real-life scenery, revel in it all with Princess.

Used to build Buckingham Palace and St. Paul’s Cathedral, the stone extracted from Portland’s quarries has changed history. But there’s more to the city than it’s commodities. Cruise the British Isles to investigate the mysteries of Stonehenge, and learn about the grape-to-glass process at Langham Wine Estate. Or see hundreds of baby swans parading through the grounds of the 600-year-old Abbotsbury Swannery.

Why Cruise the British Isles

The British pubs, Parisian artwork and Irish castles invite you to live like royalty.

Storied and splendid

Castles are the emblem of these regions. Between the chandeliers and tapestries, step into luxury when you visit the British Isles. Cruise to Dublin and parade through the 13th-century halls of the city’s fortress. Experience the grandeur of Urquhart Castle, and search for legendary ghosts in Glamis Castle. Or visit Edinburgh Castle, where kings, queens and nobles once lived and medieval secrets continue to linger.

Melodies of memories past

As the birthplace of many music icons, the British Isles invite you to sing, dance and raise a glass to songs played around the globe. Visit Liverpool to walk in the footsteps of a beloved boyband, and head to a local pub to hear the boys at their best. Cruise the British Isles for an evening of Irish song and dance in Dublin, or watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo assemble bands, bagpipes and drums for a soul-stirring show.

Globally recognized, historically prominent

The British Isles are a mecca of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Cruise from Southampton to Liverpool, and walk along the Royal Albert Dock, the first structure in Britain to be constructed without wood. Shop along Princes Street in Edinburgh’s New Town. Or travel to Brú na Bóinne in Dublin and get up close to Europe’s largest collection of prehistoric megalithic art.

Raise a glass to adventure

In lands famous for their stouts and ales, pubs are the cornerstone of tradition. Cruise the British Isles and step into age-old establishments that are bustling with spirit. In Dublin, get a taste of true pub “craic” — an Irish term that equates to an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and good company. With festive music playing in the background, sip on world-famous beers that originated nearby while sharing a laugh with locals.

Natural Phenomena

Unexplainable yet undeniable

Discern fact versus fiction on a British Isles cruise, where mysteries and mythologies abound. In Portland, learn about the 5,000-year-old stone circle that displays an advanced understanding of arithmetic and astrology. On itineraries that sail to Cork, search the sea for the Bioluminescence beams created by the region’s gleaming plankton. Or hunt for Invergordon’s legendary monster in the waters of Loch Ness.

Museums & Art Galleries

Ancient artifacts and acclaimed artwork

No cruise to the British Isles is complete without a visit to Paris. See “Venus de Milo” and da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” or tour Notre Dame, a work of art in and of itself. Visit the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, where interactive galleries invite you to explore. Those departing from London can also stop by the Victoria and Albert Museum which houses over two million artifacts.

British Isles excursions

Our award-winning shore excursions bring you up close to beautiful coasts, monuments and historical wonderlands. On a British Isles cruise, snap photos of Dublin’s iconic sites — like St. Stephen’s Green and Christ Church Cathedral — and taste a world-famous stout at the Guinness Storehouse. Or ride through quaint villages in Belfast on your way to Giant’s Causeway, and revel in the natural structures that surround you.

Local connections

When you cruise the British Isles, meet the diverse personalities that call these lands home. In Dublin, head to a countryside bed and breakfast where a local chef invites you to savor homemade scones and jam. Or set out on a day-long tour in Cork with your loved ones and visit the city’s most iconic sites. Stop by the 18th-century village of Kinsale, and then continue to Blarney Castle, where legends and landmarks await.

More ashore

Enjoy even more history and culture during your British Isles cruise with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Visit several pubs during an evening tour, and hear stories from locals over a pint of local brew. Savor a traditional Scottish dinner in Edinburgh, and see the Royal Mile illuminated by street lamps and the evening light. Or explore Dublin by night, and indulge in Irish entertainment.

Or book an appointment at the Lotus Spa®, named "Best Spa on a Cruise Ship" by Spafinder Wellness 365™. Vegas hits the seas

Learn from experts — like our staff or perhaps other guests nearby — and put your skills to the test. More casual players can pull up a seat at the slot machines for the same adrenaline at their own speed. For an afternoon full of games, join fellow travelers for Bingo, or compete in scheduled group tournaments.

Cruises to Ireland and Scotland

Fascinating history and pastoral landscapes await.

On a cruise to Ireland and Scotland, take in the wonderfully contrasting scenery, from Ireland’s lush, rolling countryside to Scotland’s much starker beauty, where mountains slope down to serene lochs, inlets from the sea carved by ancient glaciers.

This corner of Europe is packed with culture and history, both ancient and more recent. In Scotland, you’ll come across grand, turreted castles and atmospheric ruins, as well as cosmopolitan cities including Glasgow and Edinburgh, each with world-class art galleries. In Ireland, you’ll find history shaped by everything from the Vikings to the golden age of shipbuilding. Don’t forget those famously cozy pubs—the perfect setting for sampling a pint of Guinness.

Itineraries

Featured ports of call, belfast, ireland.

Dynamic Belfast, once famed as a community divided by “The Troubles”, has reinvented itself as a thriving, modern city with a bustling waterfront, grand Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and a lively pub scene. Take a city tour to see the vivid street art on the Peace Wall, and explore the superb Titanic Belfast to learn about the ill-fated liner. Or head to the Giant’s Causeway, an expanse of 40,000 basalt columns on the wild Atlantic coast, created by an ancient volcanic eruption.

Glasgow, Scotland

As well as being a center of imposing Victorian architecture, the buzzing university city of Glasgow is rich in culture, from the priceless art of Kelvingrove to the archaeological treasures of the Burrell Collection. Edinburgh is just over an hour away, and you’re also close to serene Loch Lomond and the forested mountains of the Trossachs National Park. The shopping in Glasgow is superb, whether you’re in the market for tartan, Scottish whisky and craft gin, or your own set of bagpipes.

Cork (Cobh), Ireland

Immerse yourself in the medieval history and Gothic architecture of enchanting Cork. Visit romantic Blarney Castle, a 15th-century fortress with beautiful gardens, and kiss the legendary Blarney Stone to be granted the “gift of the gab”. Sample the famed Jameson Irish Whiskey, shop for exquisite Waterford Crystal, and get a taste of life in Victorian times on a tour of the imposing Muckross House, located deep in the verdant countryside.

Ferries and cruises from Liverpool

Liverpool in Merseyside has been a city since 1880, but long before that – many centuries, in fact – it was a commercial hub of great importance.

King John founded Liverpool in 1207 and since then it has always inspired, interested, and engaged both visitors and locals alike.

👍 Hear about the deals first - click here and follow my Mini Cruise Addict page on Facebook (opens in new window).

Liverpool is an industrial town, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t also beautiful. Liverpool Cathedral and Liverpool Central Library are both stunning, attractive buildings with huge historical significance, and they are architecturally important. Due to its location on the banks of the River Mersey, there is much history to be found in Liverpool, and the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Museum of Liverpool will both satisfy even the most fact hungry of researchers. Outside of London, Liverpool has more museums and art galleries than anywhere else in the UK.

Perhaps it is popular culture that most defines the city, however. It is impossible to think of Liverpool without instantly thinking also of The Beatles, and there are plenty of sites to see that an avid fan will adore such as the original Cavern Club, and the Beatles’ Liverpool Tour. Although The Beatles might be the most famous group to come out of Liverpool, the area is famed for creating some of the most important musical star in the world – other Liverpool musicians include Billy Fury, Cilla Black, A Flock of Seagulls and Gerry and the Pacemakers to name just a very small number.

Ferries listed above commonly depart from Bootle while cruise ships commonly depart from the cruise terminal. Check before you travel to make sure you head to the correct terminal.

To find other ports near you, take a look at the UK port map here .

  • Ferry terminal: Liverpool Freeport, Bootle, Merseyside, L20 1BG, United Kingdom
  • Cruise terminal: Gate 2, Princes Parade, Liverpool, Merseyside, L3 1DL, United Kingdom

Driving directions

Liverpool Ferry Terminal is located in Bootle to the north of Liverpool. It borders the A565 which runs down the Mersey side of the city. Liverpool is easy to access from the motorway network with the M62 connecting Liverpool to the Manchester and beyond and the M57 (and M58) connecting it to the M6. It position makes it ideal for access from North Wales too.

Liverpool Cruise Terminal boasts a location far closer to the city on its historic waterfront.  The terminal is signposted on roads around the city centre although you can use the Liver Building as a landmark. From the M62 follow the A5058 (Queens Drive) south and then take the A562 (Smithdown Road) west. Take the A5052 (The Stand / New Quay) north and the unassuming terminal entrance can be found on Princes Parade.

Car parking

There is no customer car parking available at Liverpool Bootle Ferry Terminal making it an unsuitable port for foot passenger mini cruises.

There is also no on-site customer car parking available at Liverpool Cruise Terminal. However, some cruise lines have agreements with parking providers so check with yours first. Long term parking is available at Princes Dock multi storey car park (pre-booking required here ). In May 2016 the rate was £15 per 24 hours.

Some hotels offer cruise parking packages including a one night stay which may prove better value to you.

Getting to Liverpool cruise terminal by coach

Liverpool One Bus Station at Canning Place is the closest National Express stop to the cruise port. It's a short walk past Liverpool James Street train station to the cruise terminal.

Liverpool is one of the best served cities by the coach company, with plenty of routes feeding in and out of Liverpool One Bus Station. Cup of tea in hand? I shall begin...

Route 060 runs from Leeds to Liverpool via Manchester. Route 061 is an enhanced version of this route and runs via Manchester, Manchester Airport and Chester.

Route 303 connects Blackpool in the north to Weymouth in the South and stops at Bolton, Liverpool, Chester, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham, Oxford, Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth along the way.

Route 350 connects Liverpool with Stansted Airport near London. This journey includes calls to Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham and Leicester.

Route 380 runs between Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Wrexham via Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Darlington, York, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, and Chester.

Looking for a mini cruise to tempt my boyfriend into taking a the plunge of a bigger cruise providing he enjoys it.

A mini cruise is perfect for just this. There's very little commitment involved in a mini cruise as you only spent a night or two onboard, meaning if he hates it, he knows the end is nigh. Many who try it love the experience though and wish their mini cruise was longer.

Hi, I'm David and I'm a mini cruise addict. I love the ease and simplicity of exploring Europe from the comfort of a cruise ferry or cruise ship almost as much as I love finding great value deals, including the mother of all deals, the famous '2 for 1' deals.

Discover dramatic cliffs & scenic isles

Bolette will take you close to the narrow straits and soaring rock faces of Vestmanna Cliffs in the Faroe Islands, rising hundreds of metres out of the ocean. The cliffs are home to a host of vibrant birdlife, perched precariously on the precipices. Scenic cruising of the Scottish Isles includes the dramatic hexagonal basalt columns of Fingal's Cave and the intriguingly shaped Bac Mòr, also known as the Dutchman's Cap. You will sail past the tiny islands of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna, featuring diverse landscapes and offering a haven for wildlife; and Bolette will take you past Cape Enniberg, one of the tallest sea cliffs in Europe, Sumburgh Head and Eshaness cliffs. You will also have time to spend on deck discovering the sights of Loch Broom and Loch Hourn.

In Stornoway, discover how Gaelic traditions thrive by hearing folkloric stories of trolls, mermaids, sea spirits and selkies; take part in a lively Ceilidh dance; or enjoy a Harris Tweed workshop. Meanwhile, in Kirkwall, enjoy locally produced Orkney cheese and fudge, or whisky at the Highland Park distillery; and spend time with Shetland ponies when you are in Lerwick.

Skara Brae, Orkney Island

Discover Legendary Island Landmarks

The landmarks of Scotland and the Faroe Islands are steeped in history, with captivating folkloric stories attached. The Isle of Staffa is said to be where the mythical giant Finn McCool built Fingal's Cave, with its unique basalt columns, in which to shelter from his arch rival Benandonner. Skara Brae, reached from Kirkwall, is a superbly well-preserved Neolithic village, offering an insight into life over 5,000 years ago; along with the Ring of Brodgar stone circle and Ness Brogdar site. The colourful, grass-roofed buildings of Tinganes in Torshavn are home to all the archipelago's government ministers, who meet here weekly, and have been at the centre of political decisions in the Faroe Islands since the Viking Age.

Eurovision explained, from ABBA to Zorra, as the song contest is shadowed by war

Music fans are gathering in the Swedish city of Malmo for the contest.

MALMO, Sweden -- Scores of musicians, hundreds of journalists and thousands of music fans have gathered in Malmo, Sweden, where the Eurovision Song Contest is building towards Saturday's exuberant, glitter-drenched final.

But even Eurovision can’t escape the world’s divisions. Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters are also expected in the city for demonstrations urging a cease-fire in the Gaza war and criticizing Israel’s participation in the contest.

Here’s a guide to what Eurovision means, how it works and what to watch for:

The short answer: Eurovision is a music competition, in which performers from countries across Europe, and a few beyond it, compete under their national flags with the aim of being crowned continental champion. Think of it as the Olympics of pop music.

The longer answer is that Eurovision is an extravaganza that melds pop, partying and politics — a cross between a music festival, an awards show and a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. It’s an event full of silly fun, a celebration of music’s unifying power, but also a place where politics and regional rivalries play out.

Thirty-seven countries are entered in the contest, which this year is taking place over several days in the Swedish port city of Malmo. The country is hosting after Swedish singer Loreen won last year’s competition in Liverpool, England.

Through two semifinals, 37 acts have been narrowed to the 26 who will compete in Saturday’s final in front of thousands of spectators in the Malmo Arena and a global television audience estimated at 180 million.

Nations can enter a solo act or a band. They can perform in any genre and language, but the rules state they must sing live and songs must be no more than three minutes long. Staging has grown ever more elaborate, incorporating flashy pyrotechnics and elaborate choreography. This year is particularly strong on topless male dancers.

Once all the acts have performed, the winner is chosen by a famously complex mix of phone and online voters from around the world and rankings by music-industry juries in each of the Eurovision countries. As the results are announced, countries slide up and down the rankings and tensions build. Ending up with “nul points,” or zero, ranks as a national humiliation.

The musical style of Eurovision has diversified dramatically since the contest was founded in 1956. The early years of crooners and ballads gave way to perky pop – epitomized by perhaps the greatest Eurovision song of all time, ABBA’s “Waterloo,” which won the contest 50 years ago.

Nowadays, Euro-techno and power ballads remain popular, but viewers have also shown a taste for rock, folk-rap and eccentric, unclassifiable songs.

According to bookmakers, a leading contender is Swiss singer Nemo, who is performing a melodic, operatic song titled “The Code.” Nemo would be the first performer who identifies as nonbinary to win the contest, which has a huge LGBTQ + following. The contest had its first transgender winner, Dana International, a quarter century ago.

Another nonbinary performer generating huge buzz is Ireland’s Bambie Thug, whose song “Doomsday Blue” is Gothic, intense, over the top and a real crowd-pleaser. They’re the only contestant known to have brought a "scream coach" to Malmo. Ireland has won Eurovision seven times – a total equaled only by Sweden – but has fared poorly in recent years.

Other acts tipped to do well include operatic Slovenian singer Raiven, Ukrainian rap-pop duo Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil and Spain's Nebulosa, whose song "Zorra” caused a stir because its title can be translated as an anti-female slur.

So far, the act with the most momentum is Croatian singer Baby Lasagna. His song “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” is quintessential Eurovision: exuberant, silly, a little emotional and incredibly catchy. It’s already a huge fan favorite.

Eurovision’s motto is “united by music,” and its organizer, the European Broadcasting Union, strives to keep politics out of the contest. But it often intrudes.

Belarus was expelled from Eurovision in 2021 over its government’s clampdown on dissent, and Russia was kicked out in 2022 after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This year, there have been calls for Israel to be excluded because of its conduct in its war against Hamas.

Israel is competing, but was told to change the title of its song, originally called “October Rain” in apparent reference to Hamas’ Oct. 7 cross-border attack. It’s now called “Hurricane” and is performed by 20-year-old singer Eden Golan.

Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through Malmo on Thursday, hours before Golan performed at Thursday's semifinal, and was one of 10 acts voted through to the final by Eurovision viewers.

Another demonstration is planned for Saturday. Swedish police have mounted a major security operation, with officers from across the country bolstered by reinforcements from Denmark and Norway.

Palestinian flags hang from some apartment balconies in Malmo but have been banned from the televised event, along with all flags apart from those of competing nations. At the first semifinal one performer managed to sneak in a political statement, singing with a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf tied around his wrist.

The European Broadcasting Union, which organizes Eurovision, said it regretted Swedish singer Eric Saade's decision to "compromise the non-political nature of the event.”
