Cruise departing Norfolk

Norfolk, Virginia has the world’s largest natural harbor. With a lengthy maritime history, the area has been used as a port for several decades. Cruise ships, leaving from the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, are one of the more recent developments to this section of Virginia where the Chesapeake Bay flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center

As far as the rest of your trip is concerned, Norfolk is ideal for locals and out-of-towners taking a cruise. The Norfolk International Airport is just a 20-minute drive from the cruise terminal, while the city’s downtown offers parking. A shuttle connects the Cedar Grove parking lot with the Virginia cruise port.

Other popular Virginia destinations are within driving distance of Norfolk. Should you have a few extra days, consider visiting Virginia Beach, Busch Gardens, and Colonial Williamsburg.

Yorktown, Va., to be Featured on Princess’ 2024 Schedule, First Major Oceangoing Cruise Line to Visit Virginia’s Historic Triangle

America’s earliest settlements, revolutionary war sites and charming small towns provide guests with unique experiences ashore.

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

For the first time ever, Princess Cruises will call at Yorktown, Va. and Virginia’s Historic Triangle, as part of a series of custom-curated itineraries in summer 2024 that will highlight opportunities to experience Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown in addition to visiting the historic seaside town.

Princess Cruises is planning five day-long calls – three via Island Princess (2,200 guests/900 crew) and two via Emerald Princess (3,080 guests/1,200 crew) – that will result in a significant economic impact to the region, which has played an important role in American history.

Additional details, including specific sailing dates, itineraries and shore excursions, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

“Princess is already well known for our unique itineraries that appeal to our guests who gravitate toward interesting historical and cultural opportunities and Yorktown is perfectly in tune with that philosophy, offering not only a glimpse at the Revolutionary War but also dining, shopping and activity options with wide-ranging appeal. It’s a win-win for everyone,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.

Padgett added that the new itineraries are even more significant as interest builds ahead of events and festivities across Virginia to commemorate the 250 th anniversaries of the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence.

“Our community is rooted in history and it is an important part of our visitor mix. We are honored that Princess Cruises sees the value in bringing their customers to Yorktown,” said Kristi Olsen-Hayes, Director, York County Economic & Tourism Development. “Additional visitors coming to our area via the cruise line would contribute to the region’s economy, benefiting retail, restaurants, and regional attractions, as well as generating revenue for both the Commonwealth and multiple local governments.”

As the first major cruise line to call on the region, Princess understands and appreciates the significant role it plays in boosting area tourism and, as it does with other homeport and port of call communities, the company will work with local tour operators to showcase the attributes of this fascinating historical region while benefiting local residents.

“We couldn’t be more excited about this incredible opportunity to add this truly unforgettable destination experience to our already impressive array of itineraries,” said Padgett. “As a native Virginian myself, I can attest that an itinerary that offers the chance to visit Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown promises to be a most welcome addition for our guests, providing them memorable vacation experiences that they can’t find anywhere else.”

Yorktown offers 300 years of history from revolutionary battlefields to 18th Century homes. Picturesque streets provide the backdrop for art galleries, antique and specialty shops, while attractions like the Watermen’s Museum offer hands-on programs and exhibits for all ages. Entertainment, including Fifes and Drums performances, abounds, and visitors can stroll along the scenic riverwalk lined with charming restaurants and shops that offer a view of the York River.

Sure to be a popular shore excursion, a visit to Colonial Williamsburg will allow guests to discover why this was the capital of Virginia and the largest, most prosperous American colony. Men and women from all walks of life strolled these streets, and Princess guests will follow in their footsteps as they re-trace history They’ll also explore dozens of original buildings, homes, and shops reconstructed on 301 acres – most on their original foundations. Rare animal breeds, historic trades, and lovingly restored gardens add layers of authenticity to the Colonial Williamsburg experience. Guests will feel as if they’ve traveled back in time.

Guests opting to visit Jamestown, just a short, 30-minute motorcoach ride from the port, will be captivated by the history behind the original site of the first permanent English settlement in North America and the story of the role of the three cultures - European, North American and African - that came together to lay the foundation for a uniquely American form of democratic government, language, free enterprise and society.

Princess Cruises sails to more than 330 incredible destinations around the world. More information is available through a professional travel advisor, by calling 1-800-PRINCESS (1-800-774-6237) or by visiting the company’s website at www.princess.com .

Read Reviews of Our Incredible Crew & Boat Tours in Norfolk, VA

I imagine a lot depends on how the weather is, but we lucked out. It was calm (didn't help the sailing portion I suppose), and the skies were clear. Not too hot either. We got to experience a perfect sunset, and even got a bonus moonrise out of the deal! The ship's Captain was great and explained everything as we were sailing. As it got to sunset time, a musician entertained the ship by walking around and taking requests. It was fun all around and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

I have been on this cruise four times now. It is great! The crew is friendly and knowledgeable. The boat is extremely clean and very comfortable. There are two very clean bathrooms onboard. They sell adult drinks, sodas, and snacks. Also, there is a musician that walks around singing and playing the guitar. He plays fun sing-along songs by a variety of artists. This cruise is my favorite thing to do in Norfolk!!! I will be back for a fifth time later this summer!!

This was probably a highlight for me, I absolutely loved it and told my husband I couldn’t wait to go again. The captain gave a wonderful tour and for couples wanting to experience a romantic evening, this is very romantic, watching the sunset was just beautiful. I highly recommend it, you won't be sorry!

This was a great way to entertain the family. We enjoyed drinks, musician and the narrative from the captain. The night was warm with a slight breeze and the sunset even cooperated. It was a peaceful and relaxing time.

This was a perfect activity for a beautiful day! The crew was very friendly and the Captain gave a narrative of what we were seeing. It was really impressive to see them set the sails. A great way to see the harbor!

Perfect, affordable outing for my family! 2 of our teenagers was away for the weekend which left us with our 10 & 2-year-olds! So peaceful and relaxing for ALL!

Would highly recommend, great commentary, friendly staff, bar and snacks available and length is just right

The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Yorktown-Williamsburg VA, Virginia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Yorktown VA is a York River (Chesapeake Bay) cruise port and town in Virginia USA, with population around 200 (York County's population is around 67,000). Yorktown is also the cruise port to Williamsburg VA and the Jamestown Settlement (Britain's first permanent settlement in North America, currently operated as a living-history museum). Yorktown are also named towns in the states Indiana, New York and Texas.

Cruise ships in Yorktown VA dock at the pier near Coleman Bridge (Yorktown Beach). After disembarkation follows a guided tour of Yorktown, then the tourists are usually bused to Williamsburg and Jamestown on history-themed shore excursions. The three major colonial-era settlements (Yorktown, Williamsburg and Jamestown) form Virginia's Historic Triangle. The area is bounded by York River (north) and James River (south) and annually attracts 4+ million tourists. The road distance between Yorktown and Williamsburg is ~13 mi (21 km) or ~25 min bus drive.

Yorktown VA's economy is largely based on heritage tourism. Yorktown Village (Historic Yorktown) is close to York River and near Coleman Bridge (linking to Gloucester Point VA). The Village is comprised of Water Street (esplanade running along the beach) with a beach and cruise pier/ship berthing facility, hotel, antique shop, several small restaurants, nature park. In 2005 was completed a new building (housing restaurants and shops) in the waterfront's "Riverwalk" section. Yorktown is the eastern terminus of Colonial Parkway (linking the Historic Triangle sites) and also the eastern terminus of TransAmerica Trail (bicycle tour route).

Yorktown is the seat of York County - one of the 8 original shires of Colonial Virginia (1682). The small town is best known as the site of the siege and surrender of General Cornwallis (Earl Cornwallis 1762-92, British Army general and official) to George Washington (American political leader, founding father, military general) on October 19, 1781 (during the American Revolutionary War / 1775-83). The British defeat at Yorktown ended the war effectively. Yorktown VA served as a major supply port during the American Civil War (1861-65).

US Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown is a training school for the USCG. In close proximity to Yorktown are Northrop Grumman Corporation (weapons manufacturer, aerospace and defense science-technology-engineering company / headquartered in West Falls Church VA), Newport News Shipbuilding (design-building-refueling of US Navy aircraft carriers and submarines / shipyard in Newport News VA), Fort Eustis (US Army Base in Newport News VA) and Camp Peary near Williamsburg (experimental US military and CIA training facility / aka "The Farm"). Other major installations are Naval Station Norfolk (US Navy base in Norfolk VA ) and Langley Air Force Base (Hampton VA).

Williamsburg VA

Williamsburg VA is a Chesapeake Bay cruise port and town in Virginia USA, with population around 15,000. The settlement (as Middle Plantation) was founded in 1632 and built between two rivers (James River and York River) which both empty in Chesapeake Bay. Same-named villages and towns can be found in the states Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

As cruise port, Williamsburg VA (via Yorktown) is included in the regular schedule of USA's largest river cruise company - ACL-American Cruise Lines .

Next tables show two of ACL's Williamsburg-visiting itineraries as call ports and dates.

10-day "American Revolution Cruise" roundtrip from Baltimore MD

6-day "Chesapeake Bay Cruise" roundtrip from Baltimore MD

In the period 1699-1780, Williamsburg VA was the capital city of the Colony of Virginia (1607-1776, Britain's largest in North America). Granted a "city incorporate" royal charter in 1722, the city became the center of political activities leading to the American Revolution (colonial revolt 1765-83). Today, it is best-known with its Colonial Williamsburg (open-air, living-history museum and private foundation) and The College of William and Mary (1693-established, USA's second-oldest - after Harvard University / 1636-established).

Current-day Williamsburg's economy is based on colonial history-themed tourism. The town's other main industry is education (William and Mary College's students and staff).

Update March 29, 2024

Rerouting of Cruise Ships to Norfolk Due to Collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore

In the wake of the tragic loss of life and the collapse of Baltimore’s Key bridge, cruise lines will be looking towards Norfolk for a port from which to sail.

The Baltimore port serves four cruise lines, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and American Cruises.

The most pressing issue to restoring the harbor for vessel traffic is to remove the wreckage of the cargo ship that struck the bridge and the superstructure of the bridge. The structure of the bridge is so heavy that pieces will need to be cut so that they can be handled by cranes.

There is also the concrete from the pilings that will need to be removed before vessels can safely traverse the harbor.

It will take weeks, maybe even months to clear a path for vessels, and it could be up to a year before the harbor is completely clear. However, it is expected that the harbor will not have to be completely cleared in order that the port can commence vessel traffic.

The rebuilding of the Key bridge will take years to complete.

For up-to-date information about parking at the Norfolk Cruise terminal , please go to:

The City of Norfolk , and search for “cruises.”   This will give information current to cruise lines that are using Norfolk as their port after the Baltimore bridge collapse.

The parking rate is $15.00/day for passenger cars (up to 15 passenger vans) payable upon entry by cash or credit card.

For future cruise passengers, passenger drop-offs and pick-ups:

Due to traffic safety restrictions in the Terminal’s front drive, drop offs and “for-hire” vehicles (Taxis, Uber, Lyft, Limousines, etc.) must drop off passengers streetside; ideally on Waterside Dr. or on Main Street just across from the Terminal.

  Norfolk Cruise Terminal Information

Virginia Lacrosse Uses Dominant Defensive Performance to Cruise Past North Carolina

  • Author: Aidan Baller

On a crisp April day in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers opened up ACC play in dominant fashion, defeating North Carolina 14-6. Virginia delivered a stout defensive performance throughout to improve to 1-0 in ACC play. The Hoos jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, a lead that they maintained for the rest of the game.

Noah Chizmar opened the scoring for the Cavaliers, scoring 11 seconds into the game, before the Tar Heels fired back after a turnover from Cormier set up a fast break for North Carolina.  After that, the Cavaliers closed the first quarter with a five-goal run to take a 6-1 lead. Connor Shellenberger registered two assists during that run, finding Canadians Payton Cormier and Jack Boyden. To add, the six goals were scored by six different Cavaliers, highlighting the depth within this Virginia team.

To start the second quarter, Logan McGovern scored his second of the day for North Carolina. In response, SSDM Noah Chizmar scored his second of the day, choosing to stay on offense after an effective defensive set. Chizmar finished the day with two goals, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers, demonstrating his versatility as not just a defensive midfielder.

Minutes later, Shellenberger scored back-to-back goals, juking out his defender from behind the goal before burying the biscuit low for the first one to give Virginia a 9-2 lead.

In response, North Carolina scored two quick goals before Shellenberger found Boyden on the doorstep with six seconds left in the half to give the Hoos a 10-4 lead. Shellenberger led the way at the half with two goals and three assists.

At the faceoff x, Anthony Ghobriel started 5/12 in his return from injury while facing off against UNC’s Brady Wambach, who ranks fourth in the nation in faceoff percentage. Ghobriel finished 6/14 from the stripe.

In the third, both teams scored two apiece as goalies Collin Krieg and Matthew Nunes came alive with four saves each in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the lack of scoring continued until Millon fired his second of the day with 6:27 left in the game. Minutes later, off of a ride, Thomas Menke scored on an open net to solidify the Virginia victory.  With a large cushion, the Cavaliers took their foot off the gas, draining the clock to cruise to a 14-6 victory.

The dominant defensive performance was led by Matthew Nunes, who had 11 saves and a .688 save percentage. The goalie was also not afraid to leave his cage, scooping up four ground balls, tied for most on the team. Ben Wayer added four ground balls, and one caused turnover, while Chase Yager had one ground ball and four caused turnovers.  Cole Kastner also limited North Carolina’s Owen Duffy to one goal and two assists.

Offensively, Connor Shellenberger led the way with two goals and three assists. McCabe Millon had two goals and two assists, while Jack Boyden added two goals and one assist.

Virginia (10-1, 1-0 ACC) will continue ACC play on the road at Duke on Sunday, April 14th at 2pm in Durham.

Mom accused of leaving 2 young children home alone for days to go on cruise

The Houston woman was charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

A Texas mother has been arrested after allegedly leaving her two young children home alone for days to go on a cruise, court records show.

Lakesha Williams, 29, of Houston, has been charged with abandoning a child with intent to return, a felony, according to a criminal complaint.

Neighbors at her high-rise apartment building reportedly saw Williams leave with luggage on April 4 but "never saw her return," according to the complaint.

A woman at the apartment complex reached out to law enforcement to request a wellness check because the neighbors were worried about the children's safety, according to the complaint.

Deputies conducted a welfare check on Tuesday, five days after Williams allegedly left, and found an 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl alone in the apartment, the complaint stated. The apartment was in "complete disarray," with trash and food strewn about and a "very potent smell of urine," the complaint stated.

The children reportedly told police that their mother left them on April 4 "to go on vacation on a cruise and they did not know when she would return," the complaint stated.

It did not appear that any adults had been supervising the children since then, according to the complaint. Williams allegedly used a video camera to watch and talk to the children during that time, and the boy had a phone he was using to text her, according to the complaint.

"These children were definitely left unattended for many days and put in serious harm's way," Keegan Childers, the chief prosecutor of the 209th District Court, told Houston ABC station KTRK .

Search for missing South Carolina cruise passenger complicated by jungle terrain as family demands US help

A once-hopeful search for a South Carolina man who went missing last week during a cruise excursion in Cozumel, Mexico, is dimming.

Edmond Bradley Solomon III's family, including his daughter and wife, have been using social media and physically scouring the island with several local law enforcement agencies, but promising leads have become dead ends and theories are running dry.

Solomon was last seen on April 3, when a Royal Caribbean cruise ship stopped in Cozumel, where he got off the ship, went to the bathroom and vanished, his family said.

"I am terrified that if I don’t post something our story will become irrelevant, and that the U.S. will forget about us," Solomon's daughter, Savannah Miller, wrote on Facebook. "I am trying to think of something to say to keep everyone updated, but I am feeling empty and discouraged and exhausted.

SOUTH CAROLINA MAN VANISHES FROM CRUISE AFTER GETTING OFF AT POPULAR PORT OF COZUMEL, MEXICO

"I thought I was already losing my dad to FTD (frontotemporal dementia), but being unable to physically locate him is 100x more traumatic than any degenerative disease."

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

Miller is referring to her dad's recent diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory.

Known as "Brad," the 66-year-old Charleston family patriarch was enjoying retired life after 20 years as a VA critical case nurse with his wife Mimi, who is also a nurse and a breast cancer survivor.

VICTIM'S CAUSE OF DEATH IN 40-YEAR-OLD COLD CASE CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES, CASE LED TO SUICIDE AND TORE FAMILY APART

They were on a cruise, stopped for an excursion to spend the day on Cozumel, a remote island off the coast of Mexico , when his family believes he wandered off after using the bathroom within minutes of getting off the ship.

His daughter and other family members quickly dropped everything and flew to the popular tourist spot to join Mimi and the search with local law enforcement.

After a week, Solomon is still missing, and the ups and downs from potentially hopeful tips that lead to nothing is wearing on the family's mental state.

"It angers me that everyone else’s lives are continuing, but we are stuck in this horrifying level of hell," Miller said. "If you are in America, please continue to kick and scream about us to catch media and U.S. government attention so that we can be allocated additional search and rescue resources.

"Empathy, selflessness, and the endless capacity to love are my dad’s most distinctive traits, and they are the ones that still linger despite his personality-stealing disease. If you know him, you know he would do this for you."

BRUTALLY VIOLENT MEXICAN CARTEL DRAINING AMERICANS' LIFE SAVINGS IN COMPLEX SCAM AS REVENUE RIVALS DRUG TRADE

Solomon's family and friends have been sharing missing posters with loving anecdotes about how "Brad" has helped them. Missing Persons of America, a Facebook group created by a military family, created its own missing person flyers in the U.S. to complement the official missing persons bulletin in Cozumel.

Miller continues to plead with people in the U.S. and Cozumel to "spread the word."

"We are begging you to share this on socials, so that we can increase awareness and gain more news coverage. The more people who are aware, the quicker we will find him," she said.

STUDENTS UNCOVER ‘BIBLE BELT STRANGLER’ AS SERIAL KILLER CULPRIT IN ‘REDHEAD MURDERS’

Local news outlet Conexión Urbana has been covering the search in Cozumel and shared photos with Fox News Digital.

"Since the manifestation of relatives themselves, authorities have set up a search operation that keeps up to date, which has sparked the interest of citizens and the American community on the island, who have joined the search efforts," Conexión Urbana reported in a translated Facebook post.

"The municipal Civil Protection authorities have expressed their total recognition to the solidarity of the community, however, urges the need that any civic action in this regard, should include the coordination and supervision of the authorities expert in the subject, in order to avoid endangering the safety of those in solidarity supporting these search efforts, especially groups seeking internship in the jungle or at risk areas on the island."

Miller told Fox News Digital they have been following local authorities' lead since they arrived on the island while coordinating their own public awareness campaign across social media platforms.

However, the toll it is taking is becoming overbearing.

AMERICANS, INCLUDING SOUTH CAROLINA COUPLE, STRANDED BY NORWEGIAN CRUISE SAVE ELDERLY PASSENGER, FAMILY SAYS: SHIP ‘LEFT HER TO DIE’

"I have asked those surrounding me in Cozumel not to keep me informed of specific search efforts, lead, or other information because it’s making me too anxious and upset. I don’t have the bandwidth or the energy anymore," Miller wrote on Facebook.

Conexión Urbana reported a large-scale search earlier this week that included flyovers and ground searches with a rescue dog named Lune "in the most difficult (areas) to access," which included jungles and the surrounding areas.

"My dad walks really fast, and he does not have eyeglasses on like he usually does," Miller said in a previous interview. "He will often nod his head down and focus on the ground while walking. The more anxious he is feeling, the quicker he goes."

He "generally has a calm or apathetic attitude, and will probably refuse help if offered, especially from a stranger," she said, which worries her and family that this trait, coupled with his fast-paced walk, makes him seem confident he knows where he is going.

FLORIDA POLICE, GUNMAN EXCHANGE GUNFIRE IN HOTEL AFTER BOGUS ‘MURDER’ 911 CALL, BODYCAM SHOWS

"But he is not," Miller said. "He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would. Unfamiliar people or situations are intimidating to him. He does not know how to respond and will avoid."

She said everyone in Cozumel has been helpful and kind to her and her family.

In the U.S., family and friends set up a GoFundMe for the family.

"Between cancer and dementia, (Mimi and Solomon III) have been through so much in the last few years and yet Mimi still shows up every day to take care of others," the GoFundMe says. "Please help take care of Mimi and Brad."

Miller said anyone in Cozumel should send tips to the Cozumel police.

For anyone in the U.S., "we ask that they continue to share the story and sentiments about my dad if they know him to raise awareness and to stay positive."

If War Breaks Out With China, This Will Be the Most Deadly Submarine in the Sea

The sub only reveals itself when it returns to port—or when it unleashes its lethal arsenal of cruise missiles and torpedoes.

One of the deadliest weapons in the world is one that you aren’t meant to see.

Silently cruising beneath the waves, the Virginia -class attack submarines of the U.S. Navy only reveal themselves when they return to port—or when they unleash their arsenal of cruise missiles and torpedoes.

In fact, the Virginia -class subs are arguably the most important weapon for extinguishing a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Such a conflict would likely feature salvoes of Chinese ballistic missiles to neutralize U.S. airpower by devastating air bases such as Guam. Surface ships would be targeted by an array of weapons, including “carrier-killer” ballistic and hypersonic missiles. While China is improving its anti-submarine warfare capabilities , the Virginia -class subs may be the most survivable of U.S. platforms.

Yet for such an important vessel, Virginia doesn’t have many sisters. There are only 21 Virginia -class subs in service, with another 17 on order. While technical details of submarines are among any navy’s most closely guarded secrets—there’s a reason why the U.S. sub fleet is called the “Silent Service”—what is publicly known points to the immense capabilities of the Virginia class.

The initial Virginia -class subs are 377 feet long, 34 feet wide, and have a displacement of 7,800 tons when submerged. The latest Block V models, at 461 feet long and 10,200 tons, will have a lengthened hull to accommodate the Virginia Payload Module containing additional cruise missile tubes. Powered by a single nuclear reactor, the Virginias can travel underwater at more than 25 knots (28 miles per hour) while remaining hidden in the ocean depths for months at a time.

the uss virginia fast attack submarine enters service

To see how much submarine technology has progressed since World War II, consider that a U.S. Navy Gato -class sub from 1943 would have weighed just 2,400 tons submerged, and sailed at 9 knots (10 miles) per hour submerged and 21 knots (24 miles per hour) on the surface. And a Gato would have sailed on the surface whenever possible. The diesel-powered subs of the 1940s were slower underwater, and they needed to surface to recharge their batteries while the crew gulped some desperately needed fresh air.

Over the two decades since the namesake of the Virginia -class—the USS Virginia —was launched in 2003, the ships have only grown more lethal. The first models packed a considerable punch, with 12 Vertical Launch System (VLS) tubes for Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles, as well as four torpedo tubes for Mk-48 torpedoes or mines. The Block III version replaced the VLS with two six-missile Virginia Payload Tubes. The Block V boats now under construction will be floating missile batteries: a new Virginia Payload Module inserted amidships will add four big vertical launch tubes armed with seven Tomahawks apiece for a total of 40 tubes. (You can find a cutaway diagram of the Block V here .)

With dozens of subsonic Tomahawk missiles that can hit targets 1,000 miles away (and eventually even more advanced hypersonic missiles ) the Virginia class can strike deep into enemy territory while sailing in distant waters. But to focus only on weapons is to miss the qualities that have made submarines so lethal ever since the first U-boats appeared in the First World War. A U.S. Navy Ticonderoga -class cruiser has 122 VLS missile tubes and a Ford -class carrier can launch almost 100 aircraft—but neither can hide under the ocean. It’s the ability of a sub to stay hidden, to detect a target without being detected, and to destroy that target and escape that makes these vessels so formidable. It’s also why the best weapon to destroy an enemy nuclear submarine is with another submarine.

And the Virginia class may be the world’s best at performing that mission.

“They are very quiet and they have very good sensors on them,” Bryan Clark, a former U.S. Navy submarine officer and now a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, tells Popular Mechanics . “In terms of going up against Chinese and Russian submarines, the Virginia class is superior because it will detect the enemy before it gets detected.”

Clark served for years on older U.S. attack and ballistic missile subs before he first set foot aboard a Virginia -class boat. It was an eye-opening experience. A Virginia versus a Los Angeles “is like night and day just in terms of digitization and computerization.”

For example, forget those World War II movies where the submarine captain peers through the periscope. On the Virginia class, “the periscope doesn’t go through the hull,” Clark explains. “The periscope is just a camera on a mast that goes up. And then you sit in the control room and watch the video display.”

Even foreign nations want to embrace Virginia . Australia has decided to replace its Collins -class diesel subs with five Virginia -class boats in the 2030s.

Calling a $4 billion submarine “cheap” sounds like an oxymoron. But among other reasons, the U.S. Navy built the Virginia class because its first choice was too expensive. In the early 1980s, the Navy worried that existing Los Angeles -class attack subs—first commissioned in 1976—couldn’t cope with a new generation of Soviet subs like the quiet Akula class . The Navy’s response was the Seawolf class , a group of highly advanced submarines that would have cost $3 billion apiece (around $6 billion today), making them the most expensive U.S. attack submarines. In the end, the Navy built just three Seawolfs .

At the same time, with the end of the Cold War, there seemed to be little need for ultra-expensive attack subs designed to combat a shrinking and decrepit Russian submarine fleet (China had yet to be perceived as a threat at this point). Instead of the blue-water fleet in the North Atlantic, the Navy focused on littoral warfare—conducting minor operations close to shore—in regions such as the Persian Gulf.

As design work began in the early 1990s to replace the Los Angeles class, the Navy needed an attack sub that wasn’t quite as capable as the Seawolf class: less expensive and easier to build. The result was the Virginia class, which incorporated many technologies from the Seawolf , but in a smaller and slower form. Including the Virginia Payload Module, the latest version will cost $4.3 billion per sub, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The Virginia class was “sort of a compromise,” Clark says. “Let’s build a ship that’s kind of capable of doing all the things that submarines might have to do. A little bit of special operations and sending SEALs ashore, a little bit of littoral intelligence gathering, some cruise missile strikes. It was a jack-of-all-trades kind of submarine.”

Hunt or Be Hunted

But visions of fighting second-rate powers such as Iran and North Korea have been replaced by the specter of a new Cold War as the U.S. contemplates war against major powers like Russia and China for the first time in decades. The ultimate question for the Virginia class boils down to this: how does it compare to the Russian and Chinese submarines that it would hunt—and that would be hunting it?

When U.S. naval experts analyzed Chinese perceptions of American submarines in 2008, they found that Chinese experts “respect Virginia -class submarines for their advanced technology and quietness.”

Still, other world powers have their own formidable submarines that the Virginia class must contend with.

The best comparison is between the Virginia class and the Yasen M class, Russia’s most advanced attack submarine. The 13,800-ton Yasen-M “is the crown jewel of the contemporary Russian Navy and perhaps the pinnacle of present-day Russian military technology,” RAND Corp. researcher Edward Geist tells Popular Mechanics .

yasen class sub launching

The Yasen-M is a heavily armed vessel designed to launch standoff attacks with missiles. It’s armed with 32 missile tubes that can fire Zircon hypersonic and Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as 10 torpedo tubes.

“From the perspective of submarine quieting, Virginias and the older Seawolf are the quietest submarines on the planet,” Michael Petersen, director of the Russia Maritime Studies Institute at the U.S. Naval War College, tells Popular Mechanics . “The Yasen-M is likewise one of the world’s quietest submarines, but reportedly still has not achieved the same level of quieting as U.S. submarines. Nevertheless, it is extremely difficult to locate and track.”

Petersen rates the Virginia class as superior in sonar technology and signal processing software. “Quieting isn’t the only thing that matters in submarine warfare,” Petersen explains. “Sensor capability is equally crucial. It isn’t clear to me that Russia has yet been able to match the sensor capabilities on the Virginia class.”

Ironically, the Yasen-M may be Russia’s Seawolf . Geist believes Russia can only afford to build a handful of them.

Virginia’s True Enemy

The most dangerous enemy of the Virginia class may not be Russian hunter-killer submarines or Chinese destroyers, but rather its own maintenance requirements. Whatever the virtues of the Virginia class, they have proven to be a challenge in upkeep. For one thing, parts are wearing out sooner than the designers had anticipated. “This has really driven the availability of the Virginia class down,” Clark says.

Though the Navy is keeping mum about specific items, some of the problems appear to be caused by commercial-off-the-shelf components that were adopted to save money. “Because you didn’t think they would break or wear out so soon, you don’t have a supply chain for them,” Clark notes. “You didn’t buy a big pile of them anticipating frequent failures.”

Image no longer available

Compounding the problem is a lack of Navy shipyard capacity that’s depriving submarines and other warships of necessary maintenance. About one-third of the Navy’s 50 attack subs are currently non-operational at any given time due to maintenance delays. Not surprisingly, the Navy’s next-generation attack sub will be designed for easier maintenance.

And with Australia slated to receive five existing U.S. Virginias , plus the Navy considering whether to expand its attack sub fleet to 72 boats, there will be a need for more subs. But the shipyard capacity may not be there. The Navy is aiming to procure two Virginias per year, for a total of 10, between 2025 and 2028. Yet it may take until 2028 before shipyards can produce more than the current equivalent of 1.2 subs per year.

Nonetheless, the Virginia class will remain the backbone of the U.S. attack submarine fleet for decades to come. Continuously upgraded with new weapons and sensors, it will remain a formidable platform that lurks silently under the ocean.
