What are the 6 Bridges in Porto?

There are a total of six bridges in Porto: 

• Ponte Dom Luis I

Ponte do Infante

Ponte de dona maria pia, ponte de são joão bridge, ponte de freixo, ponte da arrábida.

This list is the order in which you will see them during your river cruise. Each bridge is distinct from the next, having been built over multiple years, using a variety of architectural styles. Below is information about each of the six bridges in Porto.

Ponte Dom Luis I 

Ponte Dom Luis I connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia and is the most famous bridge in Porto . When you see a picture of Porto with a bridge, it is almost always Ponte Dom Luis I.

A double-decker iron arch bridge, the bridge takes its influence from Paris’s Eiffel Tower . The bridge opened in 1886, designed for automobile and pedestrian usage. 

Today, the upper level of the bridge is for the metro and pedestrians, and the lower level is for pedestrians and cars. I walked across the upper and lower parts of the bridge. I recommend experiencing the bridge from both the upper and lower decks.

Ponte do Infante is the newest bridge in Porto , built in 2003. This upper-deck road bridge, Ponte do Infante, was built to replace the upper deck of Ponte Dom Luis and is used for automobile traffic. 

Ponte de Dona Maria Pia is the oldest bridge that connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, built in 1877. Its identity is often confused with Ponte Dom Luis I due to their similar shape, but they are each different.

Ponte de Dona Maria Pia is a wrought-iron single-deck arch bridge built for railway traffic. Today, the bridge is no longer used and is a landmark.

Ponte de São João Bridge is the futuristic looking bridge of Porto . This concrete bridge was built in 1991 for railway traffic to replace Ponte de Dona Maria Pia. Rail could travel faster on this bridge, so that was appealing. Its futuristic design allows for faster rail travel over the bridge than Maria Pia could provide. 

Ponte de Freixo is the most remote and interior bridge in Porto. Built in 1995, the bridge is another road bridge for automobiles to get between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Ponte de Freixo is double-wide, allowing for road traffic to cross from both directions simultaneously.

Ponte da Arrábida is the widest of the six bridges in Porto, being 87 ft wide. Opening in 1963, Ponte da Arrábida contains six lanes of traffic plus two pedestrian lanes.

Upon its completion, it had the largest span of any concrete arch bridge in the world. In 2011, Ponte da Arrábida was noted as a National Monument.

Is the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise Worth it? 

If you enjoy river cruises and a quick getaway from the city, a 1 hour Douro River cruise is worth it .

Is the Douro a little touristy? Absolutely. But I would counter that a river cruise is one of the best ways to experience the riverfront and see the city of Porto from a different perspective. 

Porto is known as the city of bridges , so you won’t want to miss this activity on your Porto itinerary . I recommend everyone take the short Porto river cruise at least once, especially if it’s your first time visiting Porto.

The 6 Bridges Douro River Day Cruise in Porto: What It’s Like

After scootering around Lagos and parasailing in Albufeira on Portugal’s southern coast, I was ready for more adventures in this beautiful country. Arrive early to check in for your river cruise before its departure time. After checking in, you will line up to board the boat, prepared to board when the ship is ready. Choose an open seat and get ready to sail. 

Depending on the tour you choose, there may be an audio part of the tour explaining the history of the six bridges. My river cruise did not include an audio tour.  

Once the boat sails, relax and feel the wind in your hair. Both sides of the boat offer a great view, as whatever you can’t see well on one side, you will see again on the return trip. I loved seeing each of Porto’s six bridges and enjoying sitting down after a long day of sightseeing.

Seeing Porto from the water is charming and well worth the ticket price. If I didn’t take the river cruise, I wouldn’t have seen half of the bridges in this adorable town. I recommend the 6 bridges cruise as part of your Porto itinerary.

Tips for the Best Experience with Your Porto River Day Cruise

• Plan your river cruise close to sunset if you plan to watch the sunset from Porto’s waterfront area. Porto is known for their incredible sunsets, so you will want to plan where you will be to watch it. We took our cruise around 5 pm, then stayed in the waterfront district until the sun had set.
• During the cruise, you cannot sit at the front of the boat as your seat , but you can take a photo with the view.
• If you sit on the left outer edge of the boat, be prepared to be splashed. During my tour, we got splashed, but the rest of the ship stayed dry. It wasn’t a big deal for us, but other people moved after that. Something to note when choosing where to sit during your ride. 
• Book a ticket in advance to ensure your spot. If you don’t know your schedule, buy your ticket for the same day, but be prepared that not all time options may be available. I bought my tickets on the same day and had to pick a time slightly later than I intended but it worked out. 
• Tie up your hair unless you are okay with it tangling in the wind.

A very pleasant 8 day experience but really more like a five day cruise. The cruise information was incomplete, leaving out interesting opportunities along the way (Port museums and prehistoric rock art,) most particularly an excursion to Salamanca, which turned out to be a highlight for us. The food was good but not as interesting as Portuguese restaurants in Porto or even at home in Canada.

What people love about river cruise tours from porto.

The 8 day cruise on the Duoro from Porto to Salamanca return was one of the most memorable travel experiences for me. Although there were only 7 English speaking guests (in which my partner and 1 were included) amongst mainly French guests , we never felt excluded in any way. The Purser Mike and the Guest coordinator Susannah(? with the lovely long curly hair) went over and beyond our expectations in making us feel welcome and included. All announcements were made in French and English and we never felt that the information relayed was lacking.. It was the same with all the other staff and crew members right down to the deckhands who worked very hard to give us a most enjoyable experience. Nothing was too much for them and they went over and beyond to ensure we got everything we requested . Foodwise it was 5 star cuisine for lunch and dinner each day- mostly French-exquisitely presented with satisfyingly adequate portions and delicious at all times. Complimentary Cocktails and wines were available all day (unlike other cruise companies) . Coffee, tea , refreshments sparkling and still water were also on tap 24/7.The breakfast buffet was more than adequate although it tended to be monotonous . In saying this it still fulfilled its purpose for us. The entertainment on board was also of a high standard esp the Flamenco dancing . There were also other activities like quizes, aline dancing lesson , keepfit session , which appeared to be enjoyed by all who participated. The tours were well organised and we had excellent guides who were professional and informative. I have been on a river cruise with another reputable company in the past but the experience with Croisi Europe far surpassed my expectations. The quality and value for money was outstanding and i will not hesitate to sail with them again.

Something else that I love about this river cruise in particular is that it’s a really pretty sailboat, with a very comfortable interior room open to the outside. Beware though, that most of the time (especially when it’s not windy) they use the engines of the boats instead of the sails.

The Mar Douro river sailing cruise is another great option to navigate the waters of the Douro river on a classic 31-foot motor sailor boat.

The skipper, Raul, is a really charismatic person with tons of nice stories about the Marina, the Douro river and the city itself. He is also quite generous with his Port wine servings, so I am sure you are going to end the trip feeling a bit tipsy 😀

The only thing I don’t like about the  Mar Douro river sailing cruise is that the indoors area is small, dark and not particularly comfortable, so I don’t recommend this tour for bad weather days.

The Glamorous Porto Yacht Tour tour is by far the fanciest river cruise in Porto, particularly for those of you that prefer to yachts over sailing boats. 

This yacht is indeed very fancy, with really nice (and comfortable) sofas both outdoors and on the covered area inside. It is suuuuper nice and makes for a very relaxing trip. 

Moreover, the boat is so large that it allows for several groups to have their own private area (at the bow, the stern, or up top).

The couple that runs this river cruise is Nancy and Fernando, and precisely because this is a family business, they have different schedules for every day of the week, so I recommend you to book the Glamorous Porto Yacht Tour as soon as possible to avoid missing out. They always try to include one schedule that allows for a sunset cruise, which is great!

The only thing I didn’t super like about my trip was that they only serve ONE glass of a welcome drink (sangria), which I find a bit awkward given how generous we, the Portuguese, are with wines.

Leixões is always a difficult cruise port to get into. The weather can be against you and a call in Leixões can never be guaranteed. Once the ship is docked there are couple of thing you might want to know:

There are two docking spots in Leixões. One spot is in at the cruise terminal (terminal de Cruzeiros) and there is another dock (Doca 1 Norte – Passageiros) . This last one will be in use when there are two cruise ships in port. Leixões cruise dock

Your ship will most likely dock at the Leixões cruise terminal. There is a new cruise terminal that recently openend. There are many facilities at the cruise terminal like tourist information, souvenir shops and wi-fi. 

There is no walking allowed in the port area. Once you step outside the building you see you either have your shore excursion bus waiting there or you have the take the complimentary, wheelchair accessible bus to the exit of the port. This is only a 1 minute bus ride. The picture on the side shows you the shuttle bus and the drop-off location of the bus. To get back to the ship you will be picked up at the same spot where the bus left you.

Once you have reached the exit the port you need to decide: stay in Matosinhos (the name of the city where you are as soon as you exit the port) or go to Porto. If you want to stay in Matosinhos than please know the sights here are very limited. You can visit the market, the shops in the area and the beach.

The Hop on hop off bus is usually waiting for you at the exit of the port, although it is not an official stop. Search for those double-decker buses at the exit. Especially for those of you who are not good with walking on hilly cobble stoned streets or don’t want to spend to much money the hop on hop off bus is a nice option.

Taxis are also waiting for you at the exit of the port. Expect that it costs about 15 to 20 euro one way to Porto city centre. Make sure you check the price before you step into the taxi.

You can also take the metro from Leixoes to Porto city centre. When you get off the shuttle bus, walk straight out of the port and walk 4 blocks until you see the tracks going over the road and spot the nearest stop on your left hand side. See picture on the side to know what it looks like. Buy your ticket on the metro and get off at stop Bolhao for the city centre. The metro is wheelchair accessible.

Public bus from Leixões cruise port to Porto

Your other option is to take the bus. You will find the bus stop if you walk from the exit of the port straight into town and see the bus stop 3 blocks into the street on your right hand side. The stop looks like the picture on the side. Bus line 500 goes to the city centre. It runs 3 to 4 times per hour. Pay for a ticket on the bus. The bus is wheelchair accessible.

Now that you have your options it is wise to decide before hand on how you would like to go the city. Our personal advice is to take the bus into town. It is fast, easy, cheap and a great way just to experience that little bit extra of Porto, local style. However, the taxi would also be a great option.

– What is there to do around the port? There is little to do around the port. There is a small market, some shops and a beach. Going to Porto will get you the most out of your day.

Casa da Música houses the cultural institution Fundação Casa da Música. The building is known for its non traditional shape. Designer Rem Koolhaas faced the challenge to design a building that would literally think “outside the box”. This building is a must visit for those interested in architecture.

This fortified wine is made in the Duoro valley exclusively since the British found out to add liquor to the wine to make sure the wine wouldn’t be spoilt after the long journey from Portugal to Britain. If you take a taxi into town this is the spot to ask for. This is the best location to start when exploring Porto’s city centre. It is high up, so it provides beautiful views over Ribeira, the city centre and it will provide that great first impression of Porto. You can visit the cathedral itself, which was built in the 12th century. After your visit to the cathedral make sure to start exploring the network of little market squares and alleyways.

Port Porto-Leixoes cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Porto-Leixoes, Oporto, Portugal. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Leixoes is one of Portugal's largest seaports. The port is man-made (on Europe's Atlantic coast) and located approx 4 km (2,5 mi) north of the mouth of Douro River (close to Oporto / Porto City). Leixoes is Oporto's seaport as a sandbar prevents the city to have its own deepwater harbor waterway.

Following the COVID crisis, in 2022, Port Leixoes (locode PTLEI) had a record year for cruise shipping. A total of 112 ship calls (108,626 passengers) were handled at Porto Cruise Terminal's two facilities. For comparison, in 2019 were handled 101 ship calls. The cruise port's total gross tonnage/ship volumes in 2022 also recorded (6+ million GT tons, or +56% over 2019 and +33% over 2018). Of the 2022's 112 cruise ship calls, 22 were maiden (first-time visits) and 6 were turnarounds/roundtrips.

In 2023, the Port had booked 138 cruise ship berthings (eventually received 116) and expected ~180,000 passengers (eventually handled 148,889). Of all cruise calls, 14 were maiden and 4 were roundtrips. The passenger numbers showed a 37% growth (over 2022) and +27% (over 2018/the Port’s previous record year). Most cruise tourists were from the UK (44%), followed by the USA (23%), Germany (18%), Canada (5%), and Australia (~2%).

Oporto is Portugal's second-largest city (after the capital Lisbon , which is also the country's principal port) and one of Iberia's largest urban areas.  The city is located on the banks of Douro River, in the Costa Verde area - rich in history, ancient monuments, vast beaches and pine forests. The city has total area 41 km2 (16 mi2) and population around 240,000 (urban ~1,3 million, metro ~1,8 million).

From Port Leixoes, cruise ship tourists can visit Costa Verde and Braga (country's religious capital) to see the cathedral and Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary. Another popular attraction is Guimeres - ancient capital and birthplace of Portugal's first king (Afonso I The Conqueror, 1106-1185, reign 1128-1139).

Main sights in Oporto include the 12th-century cathedral, art museum containing some of the finest masterpieces in Portugal, Saint Francis Church, with interior covered in 18th-century carvings, and Stock Exchange with impressive Moorish hall. Visitors should try a visit inland to Costa Verde's heart to see the historic Braga and shrine of Bom Jesus. On May 24, 2017, here was hosted the "Porto and Douro Cruise Forum" event. It brought together national and international cruise shipping industry professionals, travel agencies, auxiliary industries representatives, tour operators, as well as hotel-, restaurant- and shop owners which all benefit from Douro River cruise ship tourism.. The event was organised by "Cruises News Media Group".

For the 1st half of 2017, Port Leixoes reported a record 29% increase in cruise ship visits and 64% in cruise passengers over 2016. Between January and June 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 45 vessels (including 6 maiden calls) and 40,917 passengers. The majority of tourists were from Germany, UK, USA and Japan.

Porto Leixoes Cruise Terminal was built by Douro Port Authority. It is a purpose built terminal facility serving ocean-going passenger vessels ( ferries and cruise ships). The passenger terminal was opened on July 23, 2015. It is located in Matosinhos (near Oporto). Project's total cost was around EUR 50 million.

The new passenger terminal has a 340 m (1115 ft) long quay where the liners dock. The facility has berthing capacity 1 ship at a time, and also includes pedestrian access path for general public and passengers use. For the project were contracted two Portuguese companies - "Newton Engineering Consultants" (design) and "Ferreira Build Power of Porto" (construction).

Where do cruise ships dock in Porto?

There are two docks in Leixoes. The first is the terminal de Cruzeiros and the second is Doca 1 Norte – Passageiros, which will only be used if there are two ships in port. If you want to know for sure which dock you will be at, you can check here to see when and where your ship will dock.

The first terminal is fairly new and has lots of amenities including a tourist shop and wifi.

No walking is allowed in the port. This means you must either be on a shore excursion offered by the ship or take the port shuttle bus (only a 1-minute ride) to leave the port. Once out of the port, you can then decide to stay in Matosinhos (the town where the port is located) or go to Porto.

Matosinhos has limited things to do. These include a market, a few stores and a beach you can visit.

Can I walk to the city center from the cruise port?

Porto city center is very walkable. It is small with narrow streets lined with cafes, historic churches, and lots of wine. Although Porto is walkable, the port, however, is located 5.5 miles from the city center, you will more than likely want to take transportation to get there.

How far is the port from the beach?

Matosinhos (the town where the port is located), has the largest beach in the area and you can walk to it in 5 minutes. This beach is known for surfing.

Porto has several beaches within the city limits. From the city center, you can reach several different beaches in 20-30 minutes.

Cais da Ribeira

Ribeira is an authentic Portuguese neighborhood. It is in the heart of the old town and located on the riverbank of the Douro River. It is a great place for eating with lots of restaurants with scenic views of the Luis I Bridge and Vila Nova da Gaia.

Luis I Bridge

The Luis I Bridge spans the Douro River between Porto and Via Nova da Gaia. As a double-decker bridge, you can walk across both levels. A cable car can take you to the upper level. The lower level is 564 feet in length and the upper is 1297 feet in length.

Church of Santa Clara

The construction of the Church of Santa Clara in Porto started in 1416 with completion in 1457. The Church known for its gothic appearance has an interior that is opulently decorated while the exterior is much more subdued. Almost every inch inside the church is covered with carved and gilded woodwork depicting cherubs, saints, and angels.

Museu Romantico da Quinta da Macieirinha

Located in a beautiful mansion the Romantic Museum of Quinta da Macieirinha in Porto illustrates what a nineteenth-century aristocratic house would look like. All rooms are decorated with paintings and antiques.

Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro

With a collection of Portuguese silver, jewelry, ceramic figures, precious metal objects, and antiques, the house museum Guerra Junqueiro is well worth a visit.

Foz do Douro

Foz do Douro is where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the more expensive areas in Porto to live in. There are two forts here to visit: The Fortress Sao Joao Baptista da Foz and Fort of Sao Francisco do Queijo (called the Castel of the Cheese).

Built in 1842 in the Neoclassical style, the Bolsa Palace is also known as the Stock Exchange Palace. It is located in the historical center of Porta in the Infante D. Henrique Square. It is currently the headquarters of Porto’s Commercial Association.

Inside the palace is a large central courtyard called Patio das Nacoes (Courtyard of the Nations) which is enclosed by a glass structure that lets in tons of natural light. An impressive marble and granite staircase leads you to the golden room, covered in gold leaf, and the General Assembly Room, covered in wood.

Torre dos Clerigos

This Baroque-inspired church, the Clerigos Church is in the city center and was constructed in 1763. The 250-foot-tall bell tower can be seen from many places throughout the city. From the top of the tower, there are stunning panoramic views of the city. With only 240 steps to reach the top, well worth the time to visit.

The admission fee to the tower also covers the Clerogos Museum, which exhibits religious artifacts and paintings from this church’s history.

Bring good walking shoes because Porta is hilly. The best way to get around is by Metro, bus, or foot. Porto has an extensive public transportation system.

Porto is… a city torn between the currents of time. On one hand, is firmly rooted in the past with its history and culture in full display. On the other hand, it reaches out excitedly towards the future, complete with all the modern conveniences.

In between, Porto has its unique charm. Whether it’s a rustic view of the river or the countryside, a warm shot of port, or a welcoming smile from one of its locals, there are many things to do in Porto.

Which is amazing, since it’s Portugal ’s second prime city. And yet it’s not one that’s trapped in the ravages of modernization, its skyline not ruined by the skyscrapers of today’s metropolis. There’s modern architecture, yes, but there’s also the raw street art not too far away from the classic tourist sights of museums and cathedrals.

Like in many other grand cities of the world, you could easily stay here for a week and still be fascinated. But if you don’t have that time, we have curated the best of Porto into this ultimate guide that will get you going!

Porto Attractions

One of the main reasons why Porto draws a lot of tourists is because of its laid-back environment. Europe can be a pretty hectic place for a tourist (maybe not for a local) because of the many things to see, and Porto allows you an opportunity to just sit back or maybe take a slow stroll while appreciating what it has to offer. Even with a laid-back town like Porto, it’s best to be prepared with the Porto Pass to get you where you need to go.

That does not mean there aren’t a lot of Porto sights, though. Between the beautiful landscapes and the museums, your eyes will have a lot to feast on!

Porto Sights: Sé Cathedral

You don’t have to be a Catholic to appreciate the grandness of the Cathedral otherwise known simply as “Sé”. The stone structure hails back to the 13th century, and has a myriad of architectural influences from the Gothic to the Romanesque.

It’s hard to miss its silver altarpiece and its ceramic-tiled cloister, among the many treasures that lie in its otherwise simple (at least in comparison with other European cathedrals) façade.

Of course, its fortress-like vantage point also gives way to an amazing view of the city below, with its orange-brown roofs. The cathedral’s terrace overlooks this perfectly, giving you some really Instagrammable shots at some quality Porto attractions!

To get to the Sé, alight at the São Bento stop of the D (yellow) rail line. There’s a EUR 3 cost to enter the cloister, but the rest of the Cathedral is free. The Sé is open daily from 9AM to 6PM.

Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

The name translates to “Crystal Palace Gardens”, and while no Crystal Palace is in sight (it was demolished in 1956) the gardens are really worth your while. The flowers, greenery, fountains, and general ambience feels like the set of one of those Hollywood period films about royalties! There are even peacocks that roam here, though they can be quite shy.

There’s a pavilion here for events, though it’s quite plain. It’s best to stick to the multitude of flower classes here and the priceless view of the Douro River!

There are two metro stops near the Jardins — the Aliados stop of the yellow line, and the Carolina Michaelis stop that services all the other lines. There are also bus routes, and you can catch either Bus No. 200 or 207 and get off the Palácio stop.

Dom Luís I Bridge

Bridges aren’t always likely candidates for top things to do in a city, but the Dom Luís I Bridge is especially interesting. Aside from being an important artery of traffic in Porto, the bridge was the product of a student of Gustave Eiffel — the architectural similarities between this and Paris’ top attraction is readily visible. It was also once the longest iron arch bridge in the world.

But what really makes it great is the spectacular view it affords of the Douro River. Pedestrians can walk along the sides of the bridge’s two levels. As a plus, there are also great wineries nearby!

The bridge is on the northern side of Vila Nova de Gaia. If you’re walking, you can take the metro to São Bento or Jardim do Morro stations, serviced by the yellow line.

Sogrape Vinhos Wineries

Speaking of wineries, this is one thing you really should do before leaving Porto ! Port wine is definitely one of the city’s greatest creations. And Sogrape Vinhos is one of the most distinguished in this regard, owning three cellars (Sandeman, Ferreira, and Offley) in Vila Nova de Gaia.

You can visit all three of them, and each one has a distinguished history starting from the 1700s. Aside from the port, keep your eyes peeled for the photographs and other memento from their rich history!

A wine-tasting experience could cost anywhere from EUR 3 to EUR 35 depending on how intimate you want to get with Porto’s beloved export. There’s a basic wine tour across all three that costs around EUR 10.

All cellars can be reached via the Jardim do Morro stop on the metro’s yellow line.

Estacão de São Bento

We’ve been talking about railway stations for some time now, but did you know that there is a station in Porto that is a tourist attraction on its own? This is the São Bento station, with which you can reach southeast of the Avenida dos Aliados (the main tourist avenue of Porto, with lots of cool shops and cafés). This makes it a no-brainer to get here. The station is on the yellow line, and you can enter and walk around for free.

The station is built on the former site of a monastery, and its claim to fame is the painstakingly painted and installed azulejos , blue and white tiles that together make up a mural-esque pictorial history of Portugal. The installation was so momentous it took a decade to finish it!

There’s also the architecture of the station itself, which makes it a really unique and must-see attraction.

Eating like a local in Porto

Most tourists see the food scene of Porto as a never-ending parade of sardines and chouriço. While salted fish is indeed an indelible part of the cuisine (and history) of Portugal as a whole, there are some really good and interesting eats here you should try.

Francesinha

This might be unfamiliar to first-time tourists, which is a shame. This is a sandwich that’s piling on a steak, three different types of sausages, and served with a fried egg and french fries. Oh, did I mention the entire thing is covered in melted cheese? There’s a super secret sauce, too, which they say is made from meat, seafood, and various types of alcohol. Make sure you check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels before you try this! Or maybe don’t bother and just enjoy.

This is one of Porto’s staple dishes, and you would really enjoy it if you choose the right francesinha place. Check out Francesinha Café over at Rua da Alegria. If you want a setting that’s a bit more intimate, there’s Yuko Tavern at Rua de Costa Cabral.

Alheira: Northern Portugal

If you can’t get enough of meat, these white smoked sausages endemic to the North Portuguese regions will give you your fill! The sausages are made from a variety of meats, from poultry to game (the latter including rabbit and venison). While these sausages are found all over Portugal, there’s no better place to have them in than in Porto.

If you want the traditional homemade quality alheira, head over to the Mercado do Bolhão and buy some raw alheira! The place is at Rua da Alegria. Make sure to stop and have a chat with the sellers to know more about the sausage’s interesting history, too!

Tripas à Moda do Porto

While this sounds like the name of a resto, it’s Porto’s other local tradition (maybe even more so than the francesinha). It’s a stew made of tripe (hence the name), cooked with some meat and a lot of white beans. The flavor is given by a generous heaping of cumin. Tripas is such a local staple that Thursday is a de facto tripe day, in pretty much the same way as Friday marks the appearance of ginisang monggo in the carinderias back home!

Tripas is best tasted at Restaurante Pombeiro, on Rua Capitão Pombeiro.

Broa de Avintes

Let’s side-track a bit and move on from meat to bread. This famous Porto bread originally came from Avintes, a town near Porto. Dense yet soft, dark, and flavorful, this is what banana bread would have looked like if it did not have sugar! Broa de Avintes is served with various dishes, along with starters (ham and cheese!), and is a nod to tradition since the cooking process takes a full 6 hours.

High quality Broa de Avintes is sold at the Mercearia das Flores, located at Rua das Flores. Try using it for a sandwich, and you’ll see why it’s so famous!

Açorda: Specialty of Portugal

Seafood is a specialty everywhere in Portugal, and every region has its take. In Porto, it’s the Açorda, a stew brought to life by coriander and garlic, and filled with fish and other seafood.

In fact, a nice bowl of Açorda may be your best bet in eating real fresh seafood during your stay. Most tourists really go for the sardines, but the thing is it’s not in season for the most part of the year (and hence is very expensive). But it you head to the north of Porto, to the village called Matosinhos, and find your way to Rua Heróis da Pátria, then you can take your pick of any of the seafood restos here and enjoy to your heart’s content!

Porto Activities: Drink Your Heart Out and More!

Tour douro valley: attractive porto.

 One of Porto’s most attractive sections, you can easily spend a whole day here. The valley has a slew of wine-tasting opportunities, from port wine to table wine. The area also produces olive oil. For those into sceneries, you can take a slow cruise along the Douro river on a traditional boat.

Douro Valley is best experienced in a tour setting, where you have a guide to show you the best viewpoints. Among these is the Peso da Régua, which gives an amazing view of the whole city!

Do a Hop-on, Hop-off Tour

Those who’ve been to the US and some Asian countries will be familiar with the Hop-on, Hop-off bus . Porto has its own, and there are two routes that will grant you access to some of Porto’s greatest attractions! Turn the buses into your very own tour bus with a day ticket (or two-day ticket) that takes you from the salt-kissed neighborhoods beside the beach to magnificent sights like the Sé Cathedral.

The buses are open-top, so you can get a panoramic view. It’s also great for people watching as you pass through the Central Baixa area, which is the city’s civic center. As a plus, there are also audio guides that will give you the lowdown on the place you are visiting! It really is like a tour of its own.

Do a Guimarães and Braga Day Tour

These two cities are some of the more interesting places in Portugal, and they are close enough to Porto for a day tour! Guimarães is notable for being the land that birthed Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. Of course, there’s a castle and a cathedral to commemorate this important historic fact.

Braga is, similarly, an interesting city with great views, a landmark monastery, and its own twist on Portuguese cuisine!

You can easily reach Guimarães from Porto by leaving through the São Bento station. The trip takes approximately an hour and 15 minutes. From there, you can get to Braga through the Rodonorte (numbers 12, 31, and 2). This trip takes about half an hour.

For the 60th anniversary of the SI Swimsuit Issue, the magazine team made sure to pick the best photo shoot destinations. Naturally, the coast of Portugal had to be among the list of set locations. 

Porto and the North is one of the seven regions—and the birthplace—of the coastal European country. The populous region is both the site of prehistoric life and the first region founded by the early Portuguese royalty. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the area boasts an extensive coastline, lush green mountains and tranquil rivers.

The country, located on the Western coast of Europe, boasts spectacular coastal towns and idyllic beaches. In Porto and the North, brand regulars like Katie Austin , Christen Harper and Camille Kostek were joined by some new talent: 2024 rookies Brittney Nicole , Penny Lane , Sharina Gutierrez , Nina Cash and Olivia Dunne .

It was a trip worth taking, according to SI Swimsuit editorial assistant Elizabeth Wentworth. “Shooting in Portugal was very special because we got to experience both the city of Porto and the vineyards in the Douro Valley,” she says of the experience. “Porto is very rich in history, making it an incredible place to wander the cobblestone streets. And the Douro Valley looked like something out of a postcard with rolling hills and vineyards as far as you could see.”

Gutierrez couldn’t agree more. Arriving to the location was a moment that she will “never forget,” she says. “It was such a magical moment. Every time I close my eyes and think of it, I can hear the sound of peacocks running across the cobblestone road. [I can] smell the scent of the delicious grapes that made the incredible verde wine. I can feel the moss and vines that took over the building walls.”

Admittedly, Portugal is an impressive country, which boasts much to do and see. Whether you’re traveling for work (like us) or pleasure, it’s sure to be a success—especially if you take our recommendations to heart.

How to get to Porto and the North

If you’re traveling from the United States, you can reach Porto International Airport—which is about 10 miles from Porto’s city center—by way of a direct flight from Newark Liberty International Airport. Or, if you’re already in Europe, the airport can be reached easily from various European capitals. In that case, though, travelers can also reach the region by way of car or train. 

The city and region also host a number of cruise ships throughout the year, if you’re looking for a way to see much of coastal Europe in one go.

Where to stay in Porto and the North

No matter which city you find yourself in (Esposende or Foz or anything in between), there are sure to be sandy spots with idyllic views to relax and enjoy a beachfront afternoon. Here is a breakdown of the various coastal cities and the best beaches they have to offer.

Espinho boasts approximately 4 miles of beaches. The vast expanse of blue sea that borders the sand is ideal for swimming, and the waves are conducive to both surfing and bodyboarding.

Best beaches: Baía, Azul, Paramos, Costa Verde, Silvalde, Rua 37, Pop, Seca, Sereias, Pescadores, Marbelo.

Vila Nova de Gaia 

Vila Nova de Gaia stretches for 9 miles along the Atlantic coastline. Here, the beaches boast a unique natural richness and recognized therapeutic attributes. The beaches offer the chance for a refreshing dip in the water or to participate in watersports such as surfing, bodyboarding or kitesurfing.

Best beaches: Lavadores, Salgueiros, Canide, Madalena, Valadares, Francelos, Senhor da Pedra, Miramar, Aguda and Granja.

The beaches of Foz are distinguished by their relatively small expanse of sand and scattered rocks. Visitors head to these shores to unwind on the beach, swim and enjoy the breathtaking ocean views from a seaside terrace. Foz’s beaches offer a serene escape amidst the bustling cityscape of Porto.

Best beaches: Homem do Leme, Luz, Ingleses, Ourigo, Carneiro and Pastoras.

Matosinhos’s urban beaches feature vast expanses of sand, giving visitors ample space for a whole host of activities both in and out of the water. The area boasts numerous restaurants renowned for their fish and seafood dishes.

Vila do Conde

Póvoa de Varzim

A land of fishermen, Póvoa de Varzim has emerged as one of the most renowned coastal destinations in Northern Portugal. The lively atmosphere extends to the numerous restaurants, bars and terraces in the area, as well as the renowned Casino, one of Portugal’s most esteemed establishments.

The beaches of Esposende municipality stretch along 11 miles of Atlantic coastline and are nestled within the Northern Litoral Natural Park. They are the perfect destination for those seeking relaxation, water sports, bird watching and hiking.

This Quaint Town in Portugal Was Just Named the Best Place to Invest in Europe — and It Has Stunning Beaches

Lush pine forests, cobblestone streets, endless ocean views, and low real estate prices await in this quaint community in northern Portugal.

Portugal is on everyone's mind these days. The country's sunny weather , many beaches , and affordable cost of living have made it a popular choice for retirees and digital nomads. However, as is often the case, real estate prices in some of its most sought-after regions, like the capital, Lisbon and Algarve , have soared. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your dream of owning property in Portugal.

A new report by International Living ranked the small, under-the-radar- town of Caminha the best place to invest in real estate in Europe for its value and growth potential. 

The community is located in the northwest along the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain, and is home to about 16,000 residents. International Living gave Caminha a perfect score of 10 in the relative value category and nine for quality of life and stability.

"Caminha, which is only separated from Spain by a river, completely charmed me," Ronan McMahon, founder of Real Estate Trend Alert and author of International Living's Global Real Estate Index, told Travel + Leisure . "It has a beautiful Old Town surrounded by a verdant and bucolic countryside, with mountains, rivers, forests, and fields overflowing with brightly colored flowers and fruit trees heavy with their bounty. And then there are the stunning Atlantic beaches."

The ancient town has plenty of character, with fountains, churches, and other buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. And it's easily accessible from Porto, which is just an hour and 15 minutes south, providing access to an international airport. 

Jeff Opdyke, International Living's personal finance editor, called Caminha a "holdover of Portugal before tourism and modernity swept over Lisbon, the Algarve, and Porto," where affordable real estate is still the norm. 

Potential buyers can find apartments downtown for as low as $150,000 and stand-alone houses for $280,000 .

And while Caminha is the best place to invest in Europe, another destination took the top prize for global real estate value: Mexico's Los Cabos. International Living ranked first with almost perfect scores in categories such as income potential, climate, and international appeal. Riviera Maya and Estepona in Spain, a town in the country's famous Costa del Sol region, are tied for the third place.
