Ready to Live the Cruise Ship Musician Life?

If you’re looking for an adventure, it’s the best-paid vacation you’ll ever have.

Here’s what just a few of our musicians have to say

"Working for Landau Music was a BLAST! I made memories that I will never forget. If you're wondering whether a position on board one of Landau Music's ships is for you, trust me, you'll be in great hands!"

“The last contract was even better than the first. The musicians were great, the people I worked with were fantastic, opportunities for creative expression abounded, and the itineraries were phenomenal."

"Landau Music and the cruising experience has truly changed my life forever and those who have the fortunate opportunity to audition and work with Landau Music will one day understand the enthusiasm that I cannot even express through words."

"I have worked on cruise ships for less than two years and have already seen half of the world and have had a great time doing it, meeting some great players and friends along the way. I'm glad to have found an agent who is as responsive and sympathetic to my goals as Landau Music."

"A typical day would be waking up, traveling to a beach to snorkel or go sight-seeing for 4 hours, then capping my night off doing what I love: playing music! Then wake up to do it all over again! Other musicians with other agencies told me how jealous they were of how good I had it with Landau."

"I can accurately say that Landau Music has definitely improved the quality of my life. The travel, the adventure, the money and most of all the people have improved the quality of my life more than I could have imagined. Thank you Michael and staff for all the work you've done for me and so many deserving musicians."

Welcome to My Office

Some of our cruise ship entertainers, hard at work

cruise ship musical director

Is this for real?

You're not dreaming. We're placing qualified musicians on luxury cruises all around the world...right now! And when we say luxury, we're talking "floating Ritz Carlton". Picture the best room in Vegas...with the best view in the world.

And I really get paid?

Yes. You’re paid a competitive salary and you get to spend your down time in exotic locations around the world—beaches in the Caribbean, excursions in Alaska, and more…

But I have to pay to get there, right?

No. We fly you there and back—and if you’re interested, we can even make sure you’re lined up on another one before you come home.

Do I have to pay for anything?

The only thing you have to pay for is a pre-employment medical. (Oh, and maybe some fancy clothes for formal nights).

Wait… I can get off the ship?

Yes, that’s the best part. If your ship goes to Egypt, so do you. Thailand? Yep. Argentina? You got it. Aruba? For sure! When the passengers disembark, you’re welcome to do so too. Most musicians play at night, which means your days are free to explore the world.

How do I qualify?

There are only a few rules. You need to be 21. You need to commit to a continuous contract. You need a passport and possibly a visa. You need to pay for a pre-employment medical. Most of all, you need to be good.

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a cruise ship entertainer? Apply now

Luxury cruise lines are looking for musicians and bands right now! Several lines will only work with Landau Music: to get to them, go through us. Get paid to play while you see the world… For free!

What does a Cruise Ship Musician do?

Enlisting for tours ranging from four to six months, cruise ship musicians are hard-working players who entertain passengers on luxury liners (i.e. cruise ships).  It's demanding work for musicians with the fluency, chops, and stamina to play four excellent sets of covers every night, week in and week out.

Many cruise ship musicians follow a six-months-on, six-weeks-off schedule, budgeting time to see loved ones and take care of business on land before heading out on another ship.

Cruise ships sometimes employ dozens of musicians at a time, placing them in a variety of configurations: solo guitarists and pianists who perform poolside and in bars; classical and contemporary duos; jazz, rock, Latin, and dance ensembles; cover bands that play an array of genres and styles; and pit orchestras for the Broadway-style productions mounted on large, theater-equipped vessels. All or most of the musicians aboard a ship might play simultaneously in different on-board venues, starting after dinner and continuing until the early morning.

At a Glance

While a gig on a cruise ship is unlikely to advance one's career, getting a regular paycheck while incurring few or no expenses is a major draw for freelance musicians , who might join the cruise individually or with a cover band or other ensemble. The job can have a number of perks,  including free meals and lodging, round-trip airline travel from home, health insurance for the duration of the cruise, and days spent sunning on the deck or exploring ports.

There are two ways for musicians to get a job on a cruise ship—apply directly through a cruise line, all of which have links for musicians seeking work on their websites, or through a recruitment agency such as Warshaw Entertainment ,  Lime Entertainment ,  Proship , or  Landau Music . The audition process is nothing to scoff at; one blogger describes having music emailed to him thirty minutes before a two-hour Skype audition, during which he was asked to play and improvise in a variety of styles.

  • Deep instrumental skills
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of genres and styles
  • Wide repertoire
  • Sight reading
  • Improvisation
  • Stamina (performing multiple shows per day)
  • Flexibility

Living in close quarters with strangers and bandmates requires flexibility and great communication skills. In terms of warming up and drawing in cruise ship audiences, charisma and infectious enthusiasm go a long way. Finally, a spirit of adventure and a strong sense of independence are invaluable qualities when spending many months at sea.

The lifestyle is perhaps the most distinctive thing about working as a cruise ship musician. Cruise ship musicians enjoy many perks, such as a regular paycheck, low expenses, and the opportunity to travel while playing music. But just like  touring musicians , they also make sacrifices: spending long stretches away from loved ones, living in close quarters with strangers, and only getting one night off per week. Most cruise ship musicians follow a six-months-on, six-weeks-off schedule.  For those not suited to it, life at sea can be isolating, depressing, or overwhelming. But those well suited to it may come to love the camaraderie that develops between the musicians and other crew members during a long voyage.

As a cruise director, creating a sense of belonging among your staff is crucial to ensuring a positive onboard experience for everyone. By fostering teamwork and encouraging open communication, you can create an environment where every team member feels valued and motivated.

One way to promote belonging is by recognizing and celebrating individual achievements. Acknowledge their hard work publicly, whether it’s through verbal praise or small rewards. Encourage collaboration among team members by assigning group projects or activities that require them to work together towards a common goal.

Additionally, make sure to provide regular feedback and support. Offer guidance when needed and be approachable so that they feel comfortable approaching you with any concerns or ideas.

Ensuring Seamless Operations

  • Foster open communication channels: Encourage team members to share their ideas, concerns, and feedback openly. This creates a supportive atmosphere where everyone feels heard and valued.
  • Establish clear roles and responsibilities: Clearly define each team member’s role to avoid confusion or overlapping tasks. This clarity enables smoother workflow and minimizes errors or delays.

  • Promote teamwork and collaboration: Emphasize the importance of working together towards common goals. Encourage cross-departmental collaboration, fostering a sense of camaraderie among different teams.

Collaborating With Other Departments to Enhance the Onboard Experience

The cruise director works closely with various departments such as entertainment, dining, housekeeping, and excursions to ensure that every aspect of your journey is exceptional. By collaborating effectively, the cruise director can orchestrate a harmonious blend of activities and services that cater to your needs and preferences.

For example, the entertainment department collaborates with the cruise director to plan exciting shows, concerts, and themed events that will captivate your attention throughout the voyage. The dining department works hand in hand with the cruise director to curate delectable menus that satisfy diverse palates. Housekeeping ensures that your cabin is always clean and comfortable while excursions provide exciting opportunities for exploration at each port of call.

Through collaboration between these departments, you can expect a seamless and delightful onboard experience where all aspects are carefully crafted to make you feel like part of a close-knit community. So sit back, relax, and enjoy being part of something special as we work together to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Here are some ways they achieve this:

  • Planning unique events: From elegant formal nights to fun-filled poolside parties, the cruise director carefully plans a variety of special events that cater to different tastes and interests.

With the cruise director orchestrating these special events and theme nights throughout your voyage, prepare yourself for an incredible experience where you’ll feel like part of a close-knit family at sea.

Facilitating Communication Between Guests and Crew Members

As a valued passenger, you can count on the cruise director to foster open communication between guests and crew members. The cruise director understands that creating a sense of belonging is essential for an enjoyable onboard experience. They actively work to ensure that everyone feels connected and heard.

One way the cruise director facilitates communication is by organizing meet-and-greet sessions with the crew. These informal gatherings allow you to interact with staff members in a relaxed setting, fostering a friendly atmosphere where questions can be asked and stories shared.

Additionally, the cruise director ensures that there are multiple channels available for communication throughout your journey. They encourage guests to provide feedback and suggestions through comment cards or online platforms. This two-way interaction allows for continuous improvement and demonstrates that your opinions matter.

During daily announcements, the cruise director keeps you informed about upcoming events, changes in itinerary, and any important information regarding safety or services. Their warm and approachable demeanor invites you to reach out with any concerns or inquiries.

Providing Information and Updates to Guests

Now that you understand how cruise directors facilitate communication between guests and crew members, let’s delve into another important aspect of their role: providing information and updates to guests.

  • Printed Materials: You’ll find informative brochures and newsletters in your cabin, providing details about upcoming events, port excursions, dining options, and more.
  • Interactive Screens: Throughout the ship, interactive screens display real-time updates on weather conditions, entertainment schedules, dining availability, and even live video feeds from various areas onboard.
  • Personal Interaction: Your cruise director is always available to answer your questions personally. Whether you approach them during scheduled meet-and-greet sessions or bump into them around the ship, they are there to provide any additional information or address your concerns.

They provide daily announcements and schedules so that you never miss out on any exciting activities or events happening around the ship.

21 Top Cruise Songs to Get You in the Mood for Cruising

Do you have a particular song that plays in your head when you think of cruising? Maybe you even have more than one, like a Cruise Playlist.

I don’t know about you, but as my cruise approaches, I get “prepared” in a couple of ways.

1. The practical

I’m all about the packing lists, shore excursion planning (plus some pre-cruise shopping).

2. The psychological/emotional

I’m serious about this one. I get myself (and my family) in the mood by having a fun attitude and playing some cruise music.

Sometimes I even sing, although not well, so I won’t be entering any cruise karaoke contests.

Favorite Cruise Inspired Songs

It got me thinking, so many cruisers have a cruise playlist of favorite cruise inspired songs. They can be great to listen to before your cruise, as you travel to your cruise ship, or even during times you’re not cruising if you’ve got a little bit of the post-cruise blues .

If you’re creating a cruise vacation video, you may want to use some cruise songs to go along with your fabulous photos, videos and cruise memories.

After scouring the internet and cruise message boards, I’ve put together a cruise playlist. It includes some popular current songs, as well as some cruising classics.  Plus, I’ve included my favorites too!

Top 21 Favorite Cruising Songs

1. cruising together.

By: Huey Lewis and Gweneth Paltrow

This is my very favorite cruise song that I listen to when I’m thinking about cruising (which could be anytime). It’s sweet, it’s romantic, and I love it. Corny and all.

“Music is played for love, cruisin’ is made for love. I love it when we’re cruisin’ together…”

2. The Love Boat

By: Jack Jones

Did you know that there is a long version of The Love Boat Theme Song as well as a short version? Oh, and there’s more than that.

If you look this one up on YouTube, you’ll be able to find many of the show openings, where the guest stars appear. It’s pretty fun to go down memory lane like this.

“The Love Boat, soon will be making another run…”

3. Cupid Shuffle

If you’ve cruised in the last 10-15 years, you’ve definitely heard this one!

The Cupid Shuffle is the ultimate cruise line dancing song at Embarkation Day Sailaway Parties. I have to admit, if I hear it, I’m on the dance floor!

“They got a brand new dance, you’ve got to move your muscle. They’ve got a brand new dance, it’s called the Cupid Shuffle…”

4. Cha Cha Slide

By: Mr. C. The Slide Man

I actually just came off an 11 day Celebrity Cruise, and even danced to this there as part of the sea day pool activities .

For real, I’m not a great dancer and not super coordinated, but I can follow directions ;-).

Sing it with me now “Freeze – everybody clap your hands! ”

5. Come Sail Away

How can you not get wistful when you hear Come Sail Away?

“I look to the sea, reflections in the ways, spark my memories. Some happy, some sad. I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had…”

6. My Heart Will Go On

By: Celine Dion

I have a confession. It took me years to finally see The Titanic. But when I did, it was better than I thought it would be!

That moment, Jack and Rose at the bow of the ship. Chills.

“Near far, wherever you are, I believe that the heart does go on…”

*Bonus Cruise Fact

Did you know that the Titanic movie is integral to the origin story of today’s Cunard Line?

Micky Arison (chairman of Carnival Corporation) was convinced by his daughter, after she saw Titanic, that people wanted and craved the nostalgia of old world cruising.

Take a look at this video below and listen to Micky tell the story better than I can:

7. Margaritaville

By: Jimmy Buffet

If you’ve cruised the Caribbean, you know that Jimmy Buffett IS the Caribbean.

I think of Jimmy Buffet every time I have a frozen cocktail at 11 am on a cruise. Seriously, it’s 5 O’clock somewhere , right?

“Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville, Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt…”

By: The Beach Boys

If you love the beach, crystal clear waters and a good time, I know you love this song!

How many places have you been?

“Aruba, Jamaica, oooh I wanna take ya. Bermuda, Bahamas, come on pretty mama…”

9. Soak Up the Sun

By: Sheryl Crow

A light summer song, Soak Up the Sun makes me think of sea days by the pool and gorgeous days on the beach.

Does life get better than that?

“I’m gonna’ soak up the sun, gonna tell everyone to lighten up…”

10. (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay

By: Otis Redding

Oh, I love this. What a classic! “Sitting on the dock of the bay, watching the tide roll away…”

The Dock of the Bay has be remade several times, by several artists, and I love the original by Otis Redding.

However, I thought I’d share one of my favorite versions in video by Playing for Change. It’s interesting to see and hear from different musicians all over the world.

11. Sailing

By: Rod Stewart

Sailing by Rod Stewart is a must-listen for anyone who loves to cruise and sail. It’s a pretty one.

“I am sailing, I am sailing, home again across the sea…”

21 popular cruise songs

12. Under the Sea

By: The Little Mermaid (Walt Disney Records)

This one’s for the kids, (or anyone who feels like a kid sometimes and still loves it).

Plus, there are some wise words… “The seaweed is always greener, in somebody else’s lake…”

13. 3 Little Birds

By: Bob Marley

Close your eyes and imagine the pool band playing…

“Singing don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing’s gonna be all right…”

14. La Isla Bonita

By: Madonna

This is where my “eighties girl” really shows through. I love some old school Madonna including Holiday (right?) and Cherish, but La Isla Bonita seems to be a favorite of many cruise fans.

That beat…

“Tropical the island breeze, all of nature wild and free. This is where I long to be, la Isla Bonita.”

15. Somewhere over the Rainbow

By: Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole

This is a beautiful and version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, with a tropical sound.

Sadly, Israel has passed away, but he’s left his music, voice and hopeful message for us to enjoy.

“Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly. and that the dreams that you dream of, dreams really do come true…”

16. Escape – The Pina Colada Song

By: Rupert Holmes

This fun song with possibly controversial lyrics is a cheesy favorite of mine.

It got me at “If you like Pina Coladas”. Yup! Anyone else?

17. Sailing

By: Christopher Cross

Imagine sitting at the back of your cruise ship staring into the wake. Doesn’t this song just say it all?

“Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be…” The rest of the song is pure poetry!

18. Voyage Voyage

by: Desireless

This French song just gets me. While it’s not exclusively about cruising, it talks of the adventure of travel and has a fun eighties sound that totally sticks in my head.

If you don’t know it, give it a listen.

“Voyage, voyage. Plus loin que la nuit et le jour…”

Translation: “ Travel, travel. Further than the night and the day…”

19. Sea Cruise

By: Frankie Ford

An oldie but a goodie. Sea Cruise by Frankie topped the charts in 1959!

“Oo-ey, oo-ey, baby, oo-ey, oo-ey baby… won’t you let me take you on a sea cruise.”

20. Toes (in the Water)

By: Zac Brown Band

Here’s one for Country Music fans!

Confession: I have NEVER heard this song before. However, this is definitely a favorite cruise playlist song for many! I’ve got to say, I could get into this!

“Got my toes in the water, a** in the sand. Not a worry in a world of cold beer in my hand. Life is good today.”

21. No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems

By: Kenny Chesney

Does this make you think of a relaxed beach day and some time at the beach bar? Sounds like a great vacation day ahead!

“The sun and the sand and a drink in my hand…”

Born in beautiful Uruguay, Fede earned his bachelor’s in jazz performance at the Berklee International Network, and promptly shipped out to work as a showband drummer aboard Carnival Cruise Lines. Soon after that, while living in London, he emailed Sam to insist that they start Lime.

Now Barcelona-based, he spends most of his free time in the mountains, skiing, paragliding, or mountain biking. Passionate about personal growth and all things Lime, he was once able to read fiction — now he can’t read anything without a ‘How To’ in its title.

Fede is a proud dad of two strong-spirited girls. Strong-spirited enough to break a grown, capable man? Oh yes. Routinely.

Sam Rothberg

After receiving his bachelor’s in music theory and composition from the University of Pennsylvania, Sam spent the next several years floating on the ocean as a keyboardist and musical director for Carnival. From the day Fede convinced him that this agency thing was actually a good idea, Sam has written an approximate total of 3.4 million work-related emails.

Tangentially related to Lime, he’s also worked on multiple other cruise lines, arranged for companies and vocalists, spoken at universities to promote innovative job opportunities for musicians, and runs his own band, The Dukes, on Martha’s Vineyard; unrelated to anything, he also runs a boxing gym there.

One full decade later, he still falls asleep astoundingly quickly, and has unusual passion for any food involving mayonnaise.

Jess Goodrich

Trotting in on her trusty steed while playing her saxophone, Jess comes to us from the southern state of Texas. We were never particularly impressed with her until we saw her play Cherokee at 390 BPM riding bareback while at a full gallop.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in jazz studies at the University of North Texas, and thereafter completed a contract on Celebrity in the orchestra before stepping up to Musical Director for a second helping of ship life. Following that, she traded in her horse for a little white dog, and her MD name tag for a music casting role with Lime.

Now she’s galavanting through South America, having traded in her dog for empanadas, and is currently training for the World Salsa Dancing championships. Make us proud and don’t lose! Seriously, don’t lose.

Jamie Tinevez

Jaime hails from Calgary, Canada, and spent much of her twenties working on Carnival as a dancer, which once made her more flexible than the rest of the Lime team combined. But since then, we’ve hired additional dancers to work at Lime HQ, so there goes that claim to fame.

She used to run Lime’s customer support, helping our musicians with requests, questions, and advice, but then one day we thought “Hey, why don’t we actually put her expertise to use?”  Now she heads our production casting department, discovering dancer and vocalist talent for the big stage, and she hasn’t looked back, aside from when we sent two angry bears chasing after her for fun.

She also claims to make amazing cupcakes.

Lau is a one-woman mafia. If you need something, call her. Doesn’t matter what it is. Money? A private jet? 18 elephants? Just give her 24 hours. And for this resourcefulness, as well as countless other reasons, we adore her! We’re also a little afraid of her.

Part of our Argentina division, she spent the better part of a decade based in Hong Kong, running the finances for a magnate’s family firm and traveling the world in the process, before trading in her yuan for pesos and returning home.

Now she’s entrusted with Lime’s cash, keeping our accountants, our team, and her bosses in check. Sam’s gambling problem with the company card? Won’t be much of a problem once Lau handles it. Sam, watch your kneecaps.

Luis Felipe Silveira

Mica filomeni.

Hailing from Argentina, Mica earned a bachelor’s in social communication and then skipped right out to sea, spending two years on board Royal Caribbean’s ships before returning to the homeland and joining Lime. When she’s not doodling, you may find her smashing Crossfit workouts or recruiting new additions for her Crossfit’s winter-lovers team.

As the other half of our admin juggernaut, Mica takes care of medicals, passports, visas, Seaman’s books, flights, Crossfit, and everything else necessary to ensure that each of our musicians makes it to Crossfit. Sorry, makes it *on board safely. Also, Crossfit.

Growing up in the Buenos Aires music scene, Pablo graduated from university with a degree in jazz guitar before becoming one of Lime’s first musicians, working on several lines and sailing the world. He continues to teach and gig in Buenos Aires, and is also a two-time Argentinian alligator wrestling champion.

Pablo reviews talent submissions and conducts auditions for all potential Showband musicians, testing for sight reading, improvisation, versatility, and general musicianship. It has been told that he can ascertain whether a musician will pass in 2.7 seconds, and on one occasion, simultaneously proctored four auditions and taught two different lessons while also having lunch.

Damo is both a bassist and a flutist, which means that he has a wider range than Mariah Carey; it also helps explain his split personality. Sometimes he just gets in an elevator and rides it from the bottom floor to the top floor and then back down to the bottom. A man of extremes!

He spent several ship contracts in the houseband, as well as with a ballroom band, and it’s said that he’s played more cha-cha-chas than Tito Puente! But less than Eddie Palmieri. But more than Gonzalo Rubalcaba!

Most Lime performers know him as the poster child of support@Lime, but he’s since transitioned to the casting department, mostly to hang out with his bestie, Jess. He’s both a good cook and a bookworm, which we call a cookworm, and a movie buff, which we call a mouff. But despite his multi-instrumentalist skills and other assorted talents, we hired him mostly so he could challenge Juli and Lean for the title of Best Mustache on Planet Earth.

Tjasa Predan

Tjasa comes to us from Ljubljana, which is harder for us to pronounce than a 64th-note diminished arpeggio run. A trained ballroom dancer, she traded in the verdant vistas of Slovenia for the azure ocean, serving as dance captain on board a Genting cruise ship. There she met her now-partner Dom, another Lime musician, so we can safely take credit for her romantic happiness.

With Dom by her side, Tjasa settled back on dry land, and upon joining Lime’s ranks, she’ll go down in history as employee #1 of our Europe division. She works with Jaime and Anna, reviewing applications and providing support to our cast performers, and since we’re pretty sure she likes her job, we’ll take credit for her happiness there, as well.

Clearly, this is allll part of our master plan. Mwahahahahaha! Ahem, sorry. We’re cool.

Anna Arellano

Our UK representative, Anna comes to us from the rolling hills of Scotland, and was one of Lime’s very first performers — in fact, she was our first vocalist ever hired, way back in 2013! If she had sang badly on board, all of us might not be here today.

It was not long before she found romance in the workplace with her then-musical director and now-husband Chris, and after sailing the seas for seven years, they made the obvious choice of relocating to Ohio. Shortly thereafter, Anna joined the production casting team alongside Jaime — finding vocalists for the main stage, and a best friend in the process! (Hint: it’s Jaime.)

Now she’s the proud mama of baby Calvin, who will either grow up to be a guitarist (like dad) or a vocalist (like mom); either way, he’ll work ships and be repped by Lime. Is it time to feed Calvin haggis yet? Soon, probably, along with his very first kilt.

Lean García

A small-town boy, Lean took the leap from Bahia Blanca, 9 hours south of Buenos Aires, to the big city. Then he took the leap and auditioned for Lime, and then he took another leap and started sailing the world, performing on cruise ships. And then another leap to become bandleader on board. And then he took the biggest leap yet and became a pole vaulter!

Nah, just kidding — pole vaulting would have been too easy. Instead, his next leaps included moving back to Buenos Aires, buying a baby grand piano, making his own music, and adopting a cat, who now leaps onto the piano. Now Lean works alongside Juli in applications and Pablo in auditions, reviewing performers looking to take the leap just like he did. Lean’s pro tips: a big heart and an open mind. And strong quads.

Juli Percossi

If Ok Google and Siri had a love child, it would be Juli Percossi. Hailing from Buenos Aires, Juli is in charge of applications and social media, reviewing performers and sending them down the path to eventually become part of our top-notch roster. We used to joke that he can smell talent a mile away, but then we tested him and he can actually smell it from 4.7 miles away.

Juli’s incredible time management and organizational skills come from years of drumming, but his secret weapon –from which all of his mojo is derived – is none other than his majestic mustache. Legend has it that a tone-deaf man once touched it and immediately broke into Mozart’s Don Giovanni! But then he shaved it and didn’t lose his mojo. So we’re confused.

Our guitar-playing, ball-juggling, mate-guzzling chief of support, Fer made La Plata his home a decade ago – just close enough to smell the pastelitos baking in Buenos Aires. After years on the ocean as an orchestra musician, he recently swapped his sea legs and pedalboard for outstretched arms and a laptop, helping our performers shine as bright as stage lights. In 2019, he actually drank more yerba mate than the entire country of Uruguay. If you ever go to the store and see that they’re all sold out of mate, you know that Fer’s been there. It’s both impressive and frightening. He also only owns two shirts – but man, are they stylish! Or maybe he just owns ten of each shirt. We’re still not sure.
