Is smoking allowed on cruise ships? A line-by-line guide

Erica Silverstein

Cruise ship smoking policies vary by cruise line, but typically smoking is not allowed except in a few designated onboard areas.

Can you smoke in cruise ship restaurants? No. What about cruise ship cabins? Never, unless you are vaping — and only a handful of ships permit that. Are you allowed to smoke on cruise ship balconies? Definitely not; it's a fire hazard. (The exception is Costa Cruises, which does allow smoking on outdoor balconies.) Can you light up on deck? Typically yes, but only in designated areas.

If kicking back with a cigar and a glass of Scotch is your idea of vacation, look for ships with dedicated cigar lounges. Just don't plan to get high on the high seas: You are not allowed to smoke marijuana on a cruise ship , even if you have a medical marijuana card or are departing from a state where recreational use is legal.

What happens if you get caught smoking on a cruise? Most ships charge a $250 cleaning fee and reserve the right to take further action (including disembarkation). On Carnival Cruise Line, each violation is subject to a $500 fine, and you could also get banned from ever sailing Carnival again.

Read our line-by-line guide to cruise line smoking policies to learn where you can — and cannot — smoke on cruise ships.

Smoking is only permitted on the port side forward area of the pool deck on Azamara cruise ships. All other indoor and outdoor venues are nonsmoking. Smoking rules also apply to electronic cigarettes.

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

For smokers and non-smokers alike, knowing where smoking is (and isn’t!) allowed on your cruise is so important. In this guide to cruise line smoking policies, I’ll explain the guidelines for where it’s OK to smoke on a cruise and where it’s strictly forbidden.

Whether you’d prefer to steer clear of any secondhand smoke on your cruise vacation, or you’re a smoker looking for the right place to light up on your upcoming cruise, I’ll share all the basics you need to know.

Plus, I’ve included a line-by-line list of smoking policies for 39 cruise lines, as well as a handy chart to see the basic policies at a glance.

Can you smoke on a cruise ship?

In general, you can still smoke on a cruise ship, but only in designated areas. If you’re not sure where the smoking areas are, you can ask any member of the crew and they’ll give you directions.

cruise ships with smoking rooms

Cruise lines have significantly tightened up their smoking policies over the last twenty years, but there’s still at least one designated smoking area on just about every ship. In fact, of the 39 cruise lines I researched, only one has any completely non-smoking ships!

Sorry, you’ll have to keep reading to find out which cruise ships are entirely smoke-free!

What can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines allow passengers to smoke tobacco in their designated smoking areas. However, no cruise lines allow cannabis or CBD in any form on their ships. This applies to smoking and vaping materials, as well as edibles and topical ointments. Even with a prescription, it’s still not allowed.

Smoking cigars or pipes on a cruise

Most cruise lines allow cigar or pipe smoking, but often only in outdoor smoking areas or special cigar lounges.

cruise ships with smoking rooms

If you like to relax with a cigar or a pipe, make sure you ask a crewmember which smoking sections you can use. It might not be all of them!

Vaping on a cruise

Using e-cigarettes (vaping) is usually only allowed in designated smoking areas. But there are a few exceptions!

A handful of cruise lines, including Cunard and Holland America, allow vaping in passenger staterooms. (Princess Cruises also used to allow vaping in staterooms, but that rule has recently changed.)

One cruise line, Regent Seven Seas, actually allows vaping in interior parts of the ship, except in the dining areas.

Smoking on stateroom balconies

With very few exceptions, smoking isn’t allowed on cruise ship balconies anymore. Although some cruisers try to sneak a smoke in the open air, it can be a safety hazard (and annoyed guests on nearby balconies will likely turn you in).

However, there are currently five cruise lines that still allow smoking on your balcony: Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA.

cruise ships with smoking rooms

There are some ships on these lines that have non-smoking balcony sections—or even entire ships where smoking on balconies is prohibited—so be sure you book your stateroom on the right ship and in the correct section.

Smoking at cruise ship bars

Most bars on cruise ships—indoors and on deck—are non-smoking. There are some exceptions, like cigar bars and designated lounges, but not every ship has this feature.

But, many designated smoking areas are located close enough to bars that crewmembers will come around to take drink orders and deliver them right to you.

Smoking in cruise ship casinos

Many cruise lines with onboard casinos allow smoking in at least a section of their casinos. Smoking privileges are usually reserved for active players, and often at slot machines or select table games only.

cruise ships with smoking rooms

Some cruise lines have specific times where the casino is entirely non-smoking. If all the ashtrays have suddenly disappeared from what was previously a smoking section, just ask a crew member. Odds are it’s the casino’s non-smoking time.

Today there are many cruise lines that have completely non-smoking casinos. Celebrity Cruises, Azamara, and Regent Seven Seas, among others, don’t allow smoking at any time in the casino.

Smoking during bunkering

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bunkering”, it’s the ship’s refueling process. During certain port stops, your cruise ship will be topped up with fuel and smoking won’t be permitted on any of the exterior open deck areas.

The process usually lasts a few hours, and on some ships this means there are zero places where smoking is allowed during bunkering.

What happens if you’re caught smoking in a non-smoking area on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines are very strict with their smoking policies, and can assess hefty fines for people who are caught smoking in non-smoking areas. They can even kick you off the ship at the next port!

cruise ships with smoking rooms

And no, you won’t get a refund if you’re disembarked for breaking a cruise line policy. You’ll also need to find your way home at your own expense—not a fun way to end your vacation!

Buying cigarettes or cigars on a cruise ship

Most larger cruise ships sell cigarettes and cigars on board. You can usually ask for cigarettes at any of the ship’s bars. If the ship has an indoor smoking lounge or cigar bar, you can often buy cigars there.

The onboard duty-free shops also usually carry cigarettes by the carton and cigars by the box. However, some cruise lines will hold your duty-free items until the last night of the cruise.

You must be at least 21 years old to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on cruises that begin in U.S. ports. For sailings embarking from most other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Tip: Although you can usually buy cigars or cigarettes, lighters and matches can be hard to come by on board. Be sure to bring extras before you sail.

Best cruise lines for non-smokers

If you’re a non-smoker and you really don’t want to be around cigarette smoke, many cruise lines do a fairly good job keeping the designated smoking areas hidden away.

But smoking areas (especially on large cruise lines with a variety of ship classes) can vary widely from one ship to another. You might find that the smoking area on one ship is so far from the action that you’d never know it was there. But another ship on the very same line might allow smoking on half of the pool deck! (I’ve noticed this on both Carnival’s and Norwegian’s fleets as examples.)

Some cruise lines also allow smoking in their casinos, and that smoke tends to travel. If you’re a non-smoker who likes to play in the casino (or you just want to avoid wafting smoke), these cruise lines have entirely non-smoking casinos:

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Celebrity cruises, celestyal cruises, cunard line, marella cruises, oceania cruises.

  • Regent Seven Seas

Virgin Voyages

Overall, the best cruise lines for people who want to avoid smoke on their cruise vacation include:

Disney Cruise Line

Seadream yacht club.

  • Viking (Ocean and River)

Windstar Cruises

Remember I mentioned that one cruise line has a couple of non-smoking cruise ships? It’s luxury cruise line Seabourn. They operate two expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit , that are completely non-smoking.

Read more about what Seabourn has to offer in my article Which Cruise Lines Have All-Inclusive Cruises?

What ships have the most smoking areas

Hi Linda, the cruise lines that have the most smoking areas on their ships are Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA - simply because they permit smoking on stateroom balconies. If you're a smoker and you're not planning to cruise on one of these lines, consider looking at Carnival, Princess, NCL, Royal Caribbean, or Holland America. You'll generally find at least a couple of smoking areas on each of their ships, and most of their ships allow smoking in the casino (with the exception of Australia-based ships). Hope this helps!

Cruise Ship Smoking Policies: A Comprehensive Guide to Rules and Restrictions

Cruise Ship Smoking Policies: A wide range of vacationers choose to take cruises, making them a popular vacation option. However, what happens if you wish to smoke throughout your cruise? Is smoking permitted on cruise ships? Smoking is permitted on most cruise ships, but only in specific locations. It is essential to verify with your cruise line before sailing, as smoking laws on cruise ships are subject to change.

Is smoking allowed on cruise ships?

Indeed. On a cruise ship, smoking is permitted, but only in specified areas. Permitted locations differ depending on the cruise operator, but usually consist of:

  • The casino.
  • A cigar lounge (if there is one).
  • One or two bars.
  • Designated outdoor spaces.

On one of the ship’s higher decks, there is usually a small area set aside for smoking outdoors. Every ship has a different location, but the policy is available on the cruise line’s website.

To avoid disturbing non-smokers, the majority of smoking locations are concealed.

It’s recommended to ask guest services where the designated smoking locations are located if you’re not sure.

There are usually less stringent rules about smoking aboard cruise ships operated by European cruise lines. However, even they are reducing the number of places that allow smoking.

Cruise Lines’ Smoking Policies

Smoking

Each cruise line has its own smoking regulations, which are subject to change. The smoking restrictions of some of the most well-known cruise lines are listed below:

On the portside forward portion of the pool deck, there is one space set aside for smoking on Azamara cruise ships. Smoking is allowed in this area, as shown by the obvious signage.

Unless otherwise specified by the tour operator, the ship’s other spaces and Azamara Cruisetours are off-limits to smoking.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Magic anchored in a port in the Caribbean with azure waters (Image Credit: Carnival Cruise Line) Each ship has its own set of approved smoking locations, which include:

  • A small casino section (when playing).
  • Room balconies.
  • Designated areas in select nightclubs.

On open decks, smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking zones with cigars and pipes.

For a breakdown by ship, see the Carnival Cruise Line smoking policy.

Celebrity Cruises

Each ship has a different number and location for its designated smoking spaces. The smoking sections are usually located on the sun deck, outside promenade, and in a corner of the Sunset Bar or Mast Bar.

Celebrity Cruises prohibits smoking in the ship’s casino, in contrast to many other cruise lines’ laws.

Celestyal Cruises

Smoking is only permitted in specific outdoor areas on Celestial Cruises. The cruise line forbids smoking indoors.

Costa Cruises

There are specific spots outside for smoking, as well as private balconies and the Cigar Lounge.

While it’s not permitted inside the cabin, smoking is allowed on the balconies.

Only interior cabins and cigar lounges allow the use of electronic cigarettes.

10 Prohibited Items to Avoid Bringing on a Cruise Ship: A Comprehensive Guide

Cunard Line

In locations set aside for smoking outside, smoking is allowed. Except in Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, where smoking cigars and pipes is allowed, Cunard Line’s smoking policy forbids smoking indoors.

Disney Cruise Line

Only outside places that have been designated for smoking are allowed on Disney Cruise ships.

The designated smoking locations on Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are located on Deck 9 (forward, portside) and Deck 4 (starboard side, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.).

Deck 4 (port side, aft, from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am), Deck 21 (port side, aft), and Deck 13 (port side, forward, near Currents Bar) are the locations designated for smoking on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

Passengers may smoke on open-air decks, designated outdoor areas, and cruise ship balconies (except the Terrace Balconies on Bolette and Borealis).

According to Fred. Olsen Cruise Line’s smoking policy, vaporless e-cigarettes are permitted in staterooms.

Holland America Line

Cigarette smoking is permitted on cabin verandahs and in specified outdoor smoking locations. Special smoking nights are available in the casino on several Holland America ships, but only when you’re gambling.

Smoking is not permitted in most indoor spaces on the Holland America Line, including staterooms.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises

Smoking is prohibited in most interior spaces, including cabin balconies.

MSC Cruises has spaces set aside for smoking outside. There are cigar and pipe smoking lounges on several ships.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Harvest Caye, Belize, is home to the Norwegian Cruise Line ship, the Escape. On open decks, guests are allowed to smoke in specified zones. There are smoking areas in the casino on several of Norwegian Cruise Line’s larger ships.

Smoking is permitted in the garden and on the private sun decks of Garden Villa reservations, but not in the cabins or on the balconies.

Certain ships have cigar bars where you can smoke a cigar or a pipe.

Oceania Cruises

There are only specific outside areas where smoking is allowed. Deck 9’s front starboard corner of the pool deck and Deck 10’s aft port corner are designated smoking places.

As per the smoking policy of Oceania Cruises, smoking is not allowed in any indoor areas, casinos, staterooms, or balconies.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises

In specified open deck areas, passengers are permitted to smoke both traditional and electronic cigarettes. Depending on the ship and the cleaning schedule, the authorized smoking locations may change during the voyage.

Princess Cruises

There are specific areas where smoking is allowed, such as cigar lounges, parts of the nightclub, and outdoor areas.

Except on non-smoking nights, smoking is restricted to specified slot machines in the casino.

Princess Cruises forbids smoking on balconies and in suites.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Smoking is permitted on selected parts of the pool deck and in the Connoisseur Club smoking lounge for guests.

Galileo’s on Seven Seas Navigator and the approved outside area of Horizon Lounge on Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Voyager are two more locations where smoking is permitted.

The Seven Seas Voyager, Mariner, and Navigator Connoisseur clubs are the only places where pipe smoking is allowed. In the specified locations of the Connoisseur Club and pool deck, smoking cigars is permitted.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International

Smoking is legal on the open decks in the designated outdoor smoking areas. Except on Oasis-class ships, when it is on the port side, the smoking area is typically found on the starboard side of the ship.

Except for cruises leaving from China and Hong Kong, where the non-smoking area is removed, Casino Royale allows smoking in a tiny designated smoking area. When sailing from the UK and Australia, the Casino Royale is strictly non-smoking.

No pipes or cigars are permitted inside the casing. However, smoking pipes and cigars is allowed in approved outdoor spaces as well as at the cigar bars on board Freedom-class and Voyager-class ships.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Fira, Greece, July 16, 2019: In the Aegean Sea, not far from Fira in Santorini, is the American luxury cruise liner Seabourn Odyssey. Smoking is allowed in a certain section of the Sky bar and on the open terrace behind The Club on Deck 5 of Seabourn ships.

Only on Deck 7, on the open terrace aft of Seabourn Square, are cigar and pipe smokers permitted.

Furthermore, it is the policy of Seabourn to allow electronic cigarettes in every suite.

Notably, Seabourn Cruises’ adventure ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, do not permit smoking.

Silversea Cruises

Smoking is allowed outside at specific tables outside the Panorama Lounge, the Pool Bar, and specific sections of the open deck.

The only area aboard Silversea cruise ships where smoking is permitted indoors is Connoisseurs Corner.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers spaces that are set off throughout the ship.

They have a policy that states that customers who are found smoking outside of approved places may be charged $500 and may be asked to disembark at the next port of call. Refunds will not be granted to guests who are disembarked for violating the cruise line’s standards and are caught smoking.

Do cruise ships allow e-cigarettes?

Cruise lines often handle vaping and e-cigarettes the same as traditional smoke. Only in places where smoking cigarettes is authorized are vaping and electronic cigarette use allowed.

Three cruise lines do not prohibit vaping or smoking e-cigarettes on cabin balconies: Holland America Line, Costa Cruises, and Seabourn Cruises.

It’s crucial to remember that electronic cigarettes are prohibited in many nations, including numerous South American and Southeast Asian nations, the United Arab Emirates, and India. Since rules vary from nation to nation, you should leave electronic cigarettes aboard the ship if they are prohibited. Electronic cigarette possession carries a range of penalties, from confiscation and fines to ten years in prison.

What Takes Place if I’m Found Smoking While on a Cruise?

A crew member may ask you to relocate to one of the approved smoking places if you are found smoking in a non-smoking area and may also issue a fee to your onboard account (typically between $200 and $500).

Until crew members can remove repeat offenders from the ship at the next port of call, they may be detained in the cruise ship’s jail.

One of the main risks to the crew, passengers, and security of the ship is fire. Cruise lines, therefore, take their smoking restrictions very seriously.

Furthermore, if you are disembarked due to violating the cruise line’s policies, you will not receive a refund.

Are cigarettes sold on cruise ships?

Smoke can indeed be purchased on cruise ships.

Cigarettes are available in the duty-free store on board by the carton. But it’s advisable to carry your own cigarettes if you intend to smoke. Certain cruise lines retain all duty-free purchases until the passengers exit.

In addition, when you get back to your own country, you might have to pay customs charges on the purchases.

Things to Know Before You Cruise

Smoking Policies On Cruise Ships: What You Need To Know!

As a frequent cruiser and a smoker, I know firsthand how confusing and frustrating it can be to navigate the different smoking policies on cruise ships. While some cruise lines are more lenient and allow smoking in designated areas or even in private cabins and balconies, others have strict rules and will kick you off the ship if you break them. It’s important to know what to expect before you set sail, so you can enjoy your vacation and avoid any unnecessary stress or consequences.

In this article, I’ll be sharing everything you need to know about smoking policies on cruise ships, including designated smoking areas, specific cruise line policies, cigar and vaping restrictions, enforcement and consequences, and more. So whether you’re a smoker or a non-smoker, this article will provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions and enjoy your cruise to the fullest.

While smoking policies on cruise ships can vary widely between different cruise lines, there are a few general guidelines that apply to most ships. Every cruise ship has at least one designated smoking area, usually located on an outdoor deck, but some lines also allow smoking in smoking rooms, cigar bars, or even on balconies. However, it’s important to note that electronic cigarettes are treated the same as cigarettes and are only allowed in designated smoking areas.

Repeat offenses of smoking outside of designated areas may result in being kicked off the ship, so it’s important to know the specific smoking policies of your chosen cruise line before you set sail. In the following paragraphs, I’ll be delving into more specific details about smoking policies on cruise ships, so you can be fully informed and prepared for your next cruise adventure.

  • Every cruise ship has at least one designated smoking area.
  • Smoking is only allowed in specific outdoor areas, smoking rooms, cigar bars, and casinos on most cruise lines.
  • Electronic cigarettes are treated the same as regular cigarettes and are only allowed in designated smoking areas.
  • Passengers caught smoking outside of designated areas may face warnings and even being kicked off the ship for repeat offenses.

Designated Smoking Areas

I always make sure to find the designated smoking areas on my cruise ship, as every cruise line has at least one. Smoking outside of these areas can result in a warning or even being kicked off the ship.

While I do enjoy smoking, I’m aware of the benefits of quitting smoking and the importance of respecting the rules and regulations of the ship.

For those who are looking to quit smoking, many cruise lines offer smoking cessation resources such as support groups and nicotine replacement therapy. These resources can be found through the ship’s guest services or medical center.

It’s important to remember that smoking is a personal choice, but it’s also important to respect the rules and regulations of the ship and the safety and comfort of other passengers.

Specific Cruise Line Policies

Norwegian Cruise Line only allows smoking in designated outdoor areas and the cigar bar on some ships. As an avid cruiser and smoker, it’s important to know the specific smoking policies of each cruise line.

Here are some additional details about smoking policies for luxury cruise lines:

Smoking lounges: While some cruise lines have designated smoking lounges, Norwegian Cruise Line does not. However, the cigar bar on select ships does offer a comfortable space for smokers to enjoy their cigars.

Electronic cigarettes: Like traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes are only allowed in designated smoking areas on Norwegian Cruise Line ships. It’s important to note that some cruise lines, such as MSC Cruises, allow electronic cigarettes in both indoor and outdoor designated smoking areas.

Smoking policies for luxury cruise lines: Luxury cruise lines, such as Crystal Cruises and Seabourn, have much stricter smoking policies than mainstream cruise lines. Seabourn, for example, only allows smoking in designated outdoor areas and prohibits smoking on balconies.

It’s important to research the specific smoking policies of each cruise line before booking a trip to ensure that it aligns with your smoking preferences.

Cigar and Vaping Restrictions

Navigating the cigar and vaping restrictions on luxury cruise lines can feel like threading a needle in a haystack. While some cruise lines have designated areas where smoking is allowed, others have strict policies prohibiting smoking and vaping altogether. For instance, Disney Cruise Line only permits smoking and vaping in designated outdoor areas, while MSC Cruises allows smoking in designated indoor and outdoor areas, including the casino.

For cigar aficionados, cigar lounge options are available on most ships, with the exception of Norwegian Sky, Sun, Star, and Pride of America. Freedom-class and Voyager-class ships even feature cigar bars where cigars and pipes are allowed. However, it’s important to note that cigars are not allowed in the casino, only in designated outdoor smoking areas. As for e-cigarette restrictions, they are treated the same as traditional cigarettes and only allowed in designated smoking areas. So, if you plan on indulging in a cigar or e-cigarette during your luxury cruise, make sure to review the smoking policies of your cruise line beforehand.

Enforcement and Consequences

Enforcement of smoking regulations on luxury cruise lines can result in warnings and even being kicked off the ship for repeat offenses. Passengers caught smoking outside of designated areas are given a warning and repeat offenses may result in consequences such as being disembarked at the next port of call.

Crew members and guest services can be notified by other passengers who see smoking outside of designated areas. While smoking is allowed in designated areas, cruise lines are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all passengers.

Those who struggle with smoking addiction can seek support through various resources available on board, including smoking cessation programs and support groups. It’s important for all passengers to respect the smoking policies in place for the safety and well-being of everyone on board.

Garden Villa and Private Areas

As someone who enjoys privacy on cruises, it’s worth noting that Garden Villa guests are allowed to smoke in their private outdoor areas. This means that if you’re staying in a Garden Villa, you can enjoy a cigarette or cigar on your private balcony without worrying about breaking any rules.

It’s a great option for those who want to relax and enjoy a smoke in a secluded area. However, it’s important to note that this exception to the smoking policy only applies to Garden Villa guests. Other passengers are not allowed to smoke on their balconies or in their cabins.

The cruise lines have strict rules in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all guests, and smoking in non-designated areas can result in serious consequences. So, if you’re not staying in a Garden Villa, be sure to respect the smoking policy and only smoke in designated areas.

Casino Smoking Rules

Now that we’ve covered the smoking policies in private areas, let’s move on to the casino smoking rules. It’s important to note that these rules can vary depending on the region of the world you’re cruising in.

While some cruise lines allow smoking in designated areas of the casino, others prohibit it entirely. It’s always a good idea to check with your specific cruise line before lighting up in the casino.

However, it’s worth noting that smoking in any capacity can be detrimental to your health. The World Health Organization has stated that secondhand smoke is a leading cause of disease and premature death worldwide.

Even if smoking is allowed in certain areas, it’s important to be mindful of those around you and their health concerns. As with any public space, it’s important to be respectful of others and follow the designated smoking areas.

Cabin and Balcony Restrictions

During my past cruises, I’ve noticed strict restrictions on smoking in cabins and on balconies for the safety and comfort of all passengers.

Smoking inside cabins is prohibited on most cruise lines, and those caught smoking inside can face hefty fines.

Smoking on balconies is also not allowed on most ships, as it poses a fire hazard.

Cruise lines take these policies seriously and may even implement fines or kick passengers off the ship if caught violating them.

However, some cruise lines do provide designated smoking areas on the ship’s outdoor decks for those who wish to smoke.

It’s always best to check the specific smoking policies of the cruise line before booking to ensure a comfortable and safe trip for all passengers.

Additional Information and Resources

Wow, I never realized how many different smoking regulations exist on various cruise lines until I read this informative post by Cruise Tips!

As someone who’s concerned about health and safety, I was particularly interested in learning about the smoking alternatives available on these ships. It’s reassuring to know that many cruise lines have designated outdoor areas where smokers can indulge without affecting the health of non-smokers.

I was pleased to learn that electronic cigarettes are treated the same as cigarettes and only allowed in designated smoking areas. This makes sense, as there are still health concerns associated with using e-cigarettes.

For those who’re looking to quit smoking, these designated areas can also serve as a helpful reminder to limit their smoking habits.

Overall, it’s clear that cruise lines are taking steps to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers, while still allowing smokers to enjoy their habit in designated areas.

Are there any cruise lines that completely ban smoking on their ships?

I’m not aware of any cruise lines that completely ban smoking on their ships, but most have designated smoking areas and restrictions on smoking in cabins and on balconies. It depends on the cruise line policies.

Are there any age restrictions for smoking on a cruise ship?

Age restrictions for smoking vary by cruise line, but typically the minimum age is 18 years old. Smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas on the ship. Remember to always follow the rules and be respectful of others.

Can passengers bring their own cigarettes or cigars on board?

Yes, passengers can bring their own cigarettes or cigars on board most cruise ships, but there are restrictions on where they can smoke them. It’s important to be aware of the customs and regulations surrounding smoking on cruise ships.

Are there any additional fees or taxes for smoking on a cruise ship?

Unfortunately, smoking on a cruise ship can come with additional fees or taxes. However, most cruise lines have designated areas and smoking lounges in place, along with safety measures to address smoking related health concerns.

What happens if a passenger is caught smoking in a non-designated area multiple times?

If caught smoking in a non-designated area on a cruise ship multiple times, consequences may include a warning, being kicked off the ship, or even legal action. Enforcement of smoking policies is taken seriously to ensure the safety of all passengers.

What is Royal Caribbean's smoking policy?

For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests do smoke. To provide an onboard environment that meets all needs, we’ve designated certain areas of the ship as smoking areas.

Smoking refers to the use of cigarettes, cigars, all types of electronic vaping (such as e-cigarettes, vapes, mods, etc.), and pipe smoking.

  • Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas , must be properly disposed of, and never be thrown overboard .
  • We’ll have visible signage posted in areas where smoking is permitted, and ashtrays that are provided for use.
  • Cigar and pipe tobacco are limited to designated outdoor areas and Cigar Bars.
  • You must be at least 21 years of age to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on sailings beginning in U.S. ports. For sailings beginning in all other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Onboard Casino

  • Casino Royale® allows smoking and has designated areas for both smoking and non-smoking guests. There will be visible signage indicating the smoking and the non-smoking area in the casino.
  • Ships sailing from China and Hong Kong will not have a non-smoking area in the casino.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the casino for any ships sailing from Australia and the United Kingdom .

Other Spaces Onboard – Smoke Free

  • Onboard all interior public spaces are smoke free. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, theater, bar, lounge, hallway, elevator, and jogging track. Outdoor areas near restricted areas, food venues, and kids play areas and pools will not allow smoking.
  • On Oasis class, smoking is not permitted in Central Park or the Boardwalk neighborhoods.
  • Smoking/vaping is not permitted inside any stateroom and any stateroom balcony. If a guest is in violation of this stateroom policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass® account and may be subject to further actions*.

Royal Caribbean International kindly asks all guests to please observe the smoking policy. These requests are made to provide a comfortable cruise for everyone. Guests who violate this smoking policy may result in one or more enforcement actions* as described on page 2 of our Guest Conduct Policy.

Smoking on Cruise Ships

CruiseMapper logo

This review is about smoking on cruise ships - Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Princess, Celebrity, Cunard and all the rest of the major cruise lines smoking policies and rules.

The new cruise ship smoking rules make cruising vacations harder for smokers to fully enjoy. This is bad news for the "smoking cruisers" whose only heavenly retreat ("joy allowed" place) on the ship soon will be the cigar lounge & bar zone.

The major cruise lines have already tightened their rules for cigar and cigarette smoking policies and this includes the mainstream lines Carnival, NCL Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and MSC, to the mid-market leaders Celebrity, Disney, Princess, Holland America.

Cruise lines smoking policies - CruiseMapper

Smoking on cruise ships has been an important issue since the 2006 fire which broke out aboard Star Princess . The fire was started after a passenger flicked a lit cigarette over the balcony railing. It landed on the balcony below, setting on fire the balcony partition and the furniture. Eventually, the fire spread and destroyed 238 staterooms. A man lost his life, the ship suffered huge loses.

Fire is the second-rated among the most disastrous cruise ship accidents - right after ship sinking, which is in true connection with the "Smoking on cruise ships" theme. Still, many passengers want to smoke in their cabins, on their balcony, in dining rooms, all around the pool deck areas.

In an effort not to repulse smokers and to please non-smokers, the major cruise lines had to rewrite their rules for smoking on ships. As part of the effort, most of them are now banning cigar and cigarette smoking on cruise ship balconies .

  • Almost all cruise lines smoking policies state, that if a guest has been caught smoking in any non-smoking area, the cleaning fee (penalty) is $250, posted to his/her onboard account.
  • Depending on the cruise line and the severity of the violation, there is even a chance for disembarkation at the next call port.
  • On many lines, the cruise smoking rules are subject to change depending on the country the ship is residing in for the evening or sailing from. That's because the different countries have different smoking laws.
  • Cruise lines smoking policies are very strict about prohibiting passengers from throwing overboard cigarette butts, due to the wind which blows them back onto the ship - a real fire gamble!
  • On most cruising vessels guests can find designated smoking areas, usually located on ships' starboard side.
  • And before our review on cruise lines smoking policies, at this Wiki link , you can read what the Wikipedia has to say on the subject of smoking.

Smoking on ships, cruise lines smoking policies and rules

  • In August 2013, Disney announced banning smoking on Disney ships (including electronic cigarettes) from all of the line's stateroom balconies.
  • Royal Caribbean followed with their balcony smoking ban, which went into effect in 2014. The ban is now enforced on all RCI vessels except the ones traveling through Asia. Guests who prefer to light up still do so inside of ships' casinos and select RCI Connoisseur Clubs.
  • Starting spring 2014, passengers aboard Cunard 's Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2, are prohibited from smoking in staterooms, on balconies, and in public areas apart from the designated areas on the open decks, Churchill Cigar Lounge, and the upper level of G32 nightclub on board Queen Mary 2.
  • Smokers who look for more permissive environment already don't have the chance to find them. Starting 2014, October 9, Carnival prohibits smoking on cabin balconies. Guests can partake inside the jazz bars and dance clubs, as well as on designated outside areas. As of December 1, 2018, Carnival Cruise Line updated their smoking policy and made their position clear: those passengers who smoke in the stateroom or on their balcony, as well as everyone else in the stateroom, may be disembarked at the next port of call. Previously, just like other cruise companies, Carnival has said that those who smoke in the staterooms or on the verandas might be charged a substantial cleaning fee (US$500). Now, they are taking things further with a stricter policy which could have consequences not only for the offending, but those they're traveling with.
  • Norwegian Cruise Lines joined the lines that prohibit guests to light up on balconies when cruising. NCL instituted changes to its smoking policy starting November 1, 2014, and banned balcony smoking. On Norwegian Breakaway and Getaway, smoking on The Waterfront is permitted on the starboard side, except by outdoor dining areas. Indoor smoking is allowed only in the casino, but only in case the travelers are actively playing ;-)
  • MSC is 90 % smoke-free, as smoking is prohibited in the dining rooms, cabins (including their balconies) and theaters. Designated areas include a designated lounge, one side of the sun deck, the cigar room and casinos.
  • Seabourn has similarly prohibited smoking from stateroom balconies in all B category suites on Seabourn Spirit, Legend and Pride. But passengers staying in Seabourn Sojourn, Quest and Odyssey suites were permitted smoking from the cabin. However, as of November 28, 2016, the line brought its smoking policy in line with other luxury cruise companies and banned smoking in all indoor venues and on balconies.
  • Celebrity also prohibits veranda smoking (including electronic cigarettes). The line restricts lighting up to ships' designated areas.
  • Note: for the smoking policies on river cruise lines ships see in the table above the following companies: AMA, A-Rosa, Avalon, Uniworld, and Viking.

Cruise Ship Smoking Policies: Can You Smoke On A Cruise Ship?

Cruise ship smoking policies

Can you smoke on a cruise ship?

The answer to whether passengers are allowed to smoke on a cruise ship varies by cruise line, as well as the specific type of smoking activity. Smoking on cruise ships is a huge fire hazard. It increases the risk of fire and cigarette smoke has an unpleasant odor that can ruin the experience of other passengers. Cruise ships have designated smoking areas that must be respected by all passengers, as failure to do so can lead to severe consequences. Smoking in non-smoking areas is strictly prohibited, and violators can be fined or even kicked off the ship. In addition, smoking in cabins is also forbidden, as it can damage the cabin and create an unpleasant odor for other passengers. It is essential to be aware of the fire hazards associated with smoking and to respect the rules laid out by the cruise ship.

If you are a smoker, use designated areas and avoid smoking in cabins or other non-smoking places. Doing so will help ensure that everyone can enjoy their cruise experience without worrying about the risk of fire or unpleasant odors. For more information on where smoking is allowed on a particular ship, passengers should consult their cruise line’s policies before embarking.

Can you smoke on a cruise ship balcony?

Smoking on cruise ship balconies is controversial, as some cruise lines permit it while others do not. For those that do, it is essential to note the rules and regulations regarding smoking on balconies. Generally, smoking is only allowed in designated areas, and passengers must not throw cigarette butts overboard. Additionally, there may be specific restrictions for balcony smoking, such as a ban during port visits or at certain times of the day or night. You should check cruise line policies to ensure you follow all rules while enjoying your cruise ship balcony.

What happens if I am caught smoking in an unauthorized area?

Smoking is strictly prohibited in non-designated areas aboard cruise ships. If you are caught smoking in your cabin or a non-smoking area elsewhere on the boat, you could face severe penalties. You may be fined, forced to disembark the ship at the next port of call, and even banned from that cruise line for life. It’s essential to take note of the signs around the ship which indicate where smoking is allowed. If you want to enjoy a smoke, make sure it’s only in the designated areas!

Is there someplace on a cruise ship I can smoke a cigar?

You’re in luck if you’re looking for the perfect place to smoke a cigar on a cruise ship! Depending on the ship, you may even find special cigar bars or lounges where you can savor your favorite brands. For those who prefer indoor smoking, some ships offer separate cigar rooms from other public areas to provide a smoke-free environment for passengers.

Are e-cigarettes allowed on cruises?

Many cruise lines now allow e-cigarettes on board, and many ships even have designated smoking areas for them. It is essential to check the cruise line’s policy before you set sail, as each one may have different rules and regulations in place. While some may allow you to smoke e-cigarettes in designated areas, others may prohibit them altogether.

Can I smoke pot on a cruise ship?

The answer is a resounding no! Smoking marijuana is strictly prohibited on all cruise ships, and any violation of this policy could have serious consequences. Cruise lines take their policies very seriously and are dedicated to ensuring everyone has an enjoyable and safe experience.

How do I find out more about smoking on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines have different policies regarding smoking, and it’s important to know what is and isn’t allowed. Before you book your cruise, make sure to check the cruise line’s smoking policy. Marijuana is not permitted on any cruise ship, regardless of local laws. To find out more about smoking policies on board, research the cruise line’s website or contact the cruise line directly. They’ll be able to give you the most up-to-date information so you can plan your trip accordingly. Check any policy changes before you travel, as cruise lines can update their policies at any time. With some research, you can make sure you know the rules and enjoy your cruise worry-free!

What cruise lines allow smoking on balconies?

Cruising can be a great way to relax and get away from it all, but many travelers are concerned about smoking policies on cruise lines. For those who need to know, AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Fred Olsen, and TUI Cruises allow smoking on balconies.

AIDA Cruises allows smoking on all balconies, but smoking is not allowed in cabins. On Fred Olsen Cruises, smoking is permitted on select balconies, and only electronic cigarettes that do not emit vapor may be used in cabins. Costa Cruises allows smoking on balconies and electronic cigarettes in cabins. Meanwhile, TUI Cruises allow balcony smoking on Mein Schiff ships, but cabin smoking is not permitted. Knowing each cruise line’s policies can help ensure your vacation goes as smoothly as possible.

In conclusion, smoking policies on cruise ships vary by cruise line, and it is vital to be aware of the rules before you embark. While some cruise lines allow smoking on balconies, others may not. Additionally, marijuana is strictly prohibited on all cruise ships and can have serious consequences if violated. It is best to check the cruise line’s website for its smoking policies before you book your cruise.

Cruise Line Smoking Policies: A Smoker’s Guide to Cruising

by The Cruise Web Team October 3, 2019, 11:41 am

Many people are aware that cigars are enjoyed by many-a-passenger on cruise ships, but can you smoke cigarettes? What about vaping? And hey, its 2019, what’s the deal with cannabis and cruising? As for that last one, it’s a big no-go, and for good reason. While marijuana has been legalized in many states in the United States, it is still federally banned and all cruise lines listed err on the side of caution and make it very clear that any possession or use of illegal substances will result in immediate disembarkation and any travel expenses incurred as a result are solely the responsibility of the passenger. While enjoying your cruise, you’re often free to light up, given you follow ship and cruise line policies! And be aware that cruise lines take the following policies very seriously, as cigarette smoke can be a health and safety hazard, or simply retract from the experience of others.

Before we proceed, it’s important to note that we do not endorse or encourage smoking, and we respect the rules and regulations set forth by cruise lines. However, we also understand that smoking is a personal choice and some individuals may seek ways to enjoy it during their cruise experience. We believe in providing information for educational purposes, so if you do decide to smoke, it’s crucial to do so responsibly and be considerate of your fellow passengers and crew members.

Now, let’s set sail on this covert smoking adventure and explore the strategies that can help you enjoy a smoke while cruising the open waters.

Understanding the Cruise Ship Smoking Policies

Before embarking on your cruise, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the smoking policies of the specific cruise line you’ll be sailing with. Each cruise line has its own set of regulations regarding smoking, and it’s crucial to adhere to them to avoid any penalties or disruptions to your trip.

Most cruise lines have designated smoking areas on the ship, such as outdoor decks or specific lounges. However, it’s important to note that many ships have implemented stricter policies in recent years, limiting smoking to designated areas only. Some cruise lines even have entirely smoke-free ships.

To find out the specific smoking policies of your cruise line, you can refer to their website or contact their customer service. Make sure to inquire about the designated smoking areas, as well as any restrictions on smoking in cabins or balconies.

Additionally, it’s essential to respect the policies and be considerate of your fellow passengers who may have sensitivity or health issues related to smoking. Even if you’re discreet, the smell of smoke can still be bothersome to others, so it’s vital to follow the rules and be mindful of those around you.

By understanding and respecting the cruise ship’s smoking policies, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable smoking experience while onboard.

Selecting the Right Cabin

Choosing the right cabin can play a significant role in your ability to smoke discreetly on a cruise ship. To increase your chances of getting away with smoking, consider the following factors when selecting your cabin:

  • Opt for a cabin with a balcony: Cabins with balconies provide more privacy and are ideal for enjoying a smoke without drawing unwanted attention. However, it’s important to check the cruise line’s policy on smoking in balconies, as some may have restrictions or designated smoking areas.
  • Avoid cabins near non-smoking areas: To minimize the risk of smoke reaching non-smoking areas, try to select a cabin that is located away from areas where smoking is prohibited. This includes avoiding cabins near dining areas, theaters, and recreational facilities.
  • Consider cabins on lower decks: Cabins located on lower decks tend to have less foot traffic and can provide a more discreet environment for smoking. As an added benefit, you’ll have easier access to designated smoking areas located on the lower decks.
  • Research ship layouts: Some cruise ships have designated smoking cabins or sections on specific decks. By researching the ship’s layout beforehand, you can determine the best areas for smoking and select a cabin close to them.

Remember, even if you have a balcony or a more favorable cabin location, it’s crucial to be considerate of your fellow passengers. Keep noise levels down, ensure smoke does not drift into neighboring cabins, and always follow the cruise line’s policies on smoking to avoid any potential penalties.

By carefully selecting a cabin that allows for more privacy and considering the ship’s layout, you can increase your chances of enjoying a discreet smoke during your cruise.

Utilizing Designated Smoking Areas

One of the easiest and most convenient ways to enjoy a smoke on a cruise ship is to make use of the designated smoking areas. These areas are specifically set up to accommodate smokers while minimizing the impact on non-smokers. Here’s how you can make the most of them:

  • Familiarize yourself with the ship’s designated smoking areas: Before setting sail, take the time to familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout and identify the designated smoking areas. These areas are typically located on outdoor decks and may have seating or ashtrays available.
  • Respect the rules and boundaries: When using the designated smoking areas, be sure to adhere to the rules and guidelines set by the cruise line. This includes not smoking in non-designated areas and properly disposing of your cigarette butts in the provided receptacles.
  • Be mindful of others: While in the designated smoking areas, be considerate of your fellow passengers. Keep noise levels down, avoid blowing smoke in the faces of others, and always ask permission before lighting up near someone else.
  • Time your visits strategically: If the designated smoking areas tend to get crowded, consider visiting during off-peak times to ensure you have enough space and privacy to enjoy your smoke.

By utilizing the designated smoking areas provided by the cruise line, you can enjoy your smoke without infringing on the rights and comfort of non-smokers. Remember, proper etiquette and respect for others are key when using these areas.

Disguising the Smoke and Smell

When trying to get away with smoking on a cruise ship, it’s important to minimize the visibility and smell of smoke. By employing a few tricks, you can help disguise the evidence and reduce the risk of getting caught:

  • Invest in smokeless devices: Consider using smokeless alternatives, such as electronic cigarettes or vaping devices, which produce less visible smoke and eliminate the smell associated with traditional tobacco products.
  • Use a smoke filter: Smoke filters and sploofs are devices designed to filter and neutralize the odor of smoke. These handy gadgets can help greatly in reducing the smell and lingering scent of smoke.
  • Choose odor-neutralizing products: Use odor-neutralizing sprays or air fresheners in your cabin to mask any lingering smell. Be sure to choose products with a neutral or fresh scent to avoid attracting attention.
  • Take advantage of ventilation: If you’re in a cabin with a balcony, try smoking near the edge of the balcony where the smoke can easily disperse into the open air. Opening windows or vents in your cabin can also aid in removing smoke and minimizing odor.
  • Practice airflow management: Create positive airflow in your cabin by using fans strategically. Position them near windows or balconies to help direct smoke towards the outdoors rather than circulating it inside the cabin.

While these methods can help reduce the visibility and smell of smoke, it’s important to note that they may not completely eliminate the evidence. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and be mindful of the potential impact on others.

Remember, smoking on a cruise ship is a privilege, and it’s important to respect the rules and regulations set by the cruise line. By taking steps to disguise the smoke and smell, you can enjoy your smoke while minimizing any inconvenience to those around you.

Minimizing the Risk of Getting Caught

While trying to enjoy a discreet smoke on a cruise ship, it’s essential to take precautions to minimize the risk of getting caught. Here are some tips to help you stay under the radar:

  • Be aware of surveillance cameras: Cruise ships are equipped with surveillance cameras in various areas, including smoking areas. Avoid doing anything that might draw attention to yourself, such as blowing smoke directly towards the cameras or engaging in suspicious behavior.
  • Keep an eye out for crew members: Be vigilant and watch for crew members who may be patrolling the designated smoking areas. If you see them approaching, try to extinguish your cigarette discreetly and act natural to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.
  • Use distractions: Consider utilizing distractions when smoking, such as having a book, magazine, or electronic device on hand. By appearing engrossed in a different activity, you can divert attention away from your smoking.
  • Observe fellow passengers: Pay attention to the behavior of fellow passengers in designated smoking areas. If others are being discreet and cautious, follow their lead to blend in and minimize the risk of attracting unwanted attention.
  • Keep conversations to a minimum: Engaging in loud or lengthy conversations while smoking can draw attention to yourself. Keep conversations brief and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to your activity.

Remember, even with these precautions, there is still a risk of getting caught. It’s important to weigh the consequences and consider the potential penalties imposed by the cruise line for violating their smoking policies.

By being discreet, observant, and aware of your surroundings, you can minimize the risk of getting caught and increase your chances of enjoying a quiet smoke on the cruise ship.

Properly Disposing of Evidence

When smoking on a cruise ship, it’s essential to properly dispose of any evidence to avoid detection. Failing to do so can not only lead to penalties but also create an unpleasant experience for other passengers and crew. Here are some tips for discreetly disposing of smoking-related evidence:

  • Cigarette butts: The most obvious evidence of smoking is cigarette butts. It’s crucial to properly extinguish them and dispose of them in designated ashtrays or smoking receptacles. Avoid throwing them overboard or tossing them in other trash bins, as this can be seen as a violation of shipboard rules.
  • Ashes: To avoid leaving ash residue, consider using a portable ashtray or a small container with a lid to catch the ashes. This will prevent any accidental spills or windblown ashes that could draw attention.
  • Odor control: Use odor-neutralizing products, such as odor-absorbing bags or ziplock bags, to seal in any residual smell. These can help contain the odor while you find an appropriate place to dispose of the smoking-related items.
  • Discreet disposal: When disposing of smoking-related items, choose a time and location that offers minimal visibility. If there are designated smoking areas with dedicated ashtrays or receptacles nearby, use those for the disposal. If not, look for discreet bins in common areas away from non-smoking zones.
  • Maintain cleanliness: As you dispose of smoking-related evidence, ensure that you leave the area clean and free of any signs of smoking. This includes properly disposing of any packaging, empty cigarette packs, or other smoking paraphernalia.

By properly disposing of smoking-related evidence, you can minimize the risk of detection and maintain a respectful environment for all passengers and crew members.

The Importance of Respect and Consideration

While it may be tempting to indulge in smoking on a cruise ship, it’s crucial to prioritize respect and consideration for your fellow passengers and the cruise staff. Here are some important factors to keep in mind:

  • Respect the rules: Adhere to the smoking policies and guidelines set by the cruise line. These policies are in place to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers. Violating these rules not only risks penalties but also creates a negative experience for others.
  • Avoid inconveniencing others: Be mindful of non-smokers and their preferences. Refrain from smoking in non-designated areas and be aware of the direction of smoke to prevent it from bothering others. Remember that the smell of smoke can be unpleasant for many people, and it’s important to be considerate of their experience.
  • Maintain cleanliness: Whether you smoke in designated areas or in your cabin, take care to clean up after yourself. Dispose of cigarette butts, ashes, and any other smoking-related waste properly. Keeping the environment clean demonstrates respect for both the cruise ship and your fellow passengers.
  • Be discreet: While you may want to enjoy a smoke, it’s important to do so discreetly. Avoid drawing attention to yourself through excessive noise, visible smoke, or suspicious behavior. Being discreet allows you to enjoy your smoke while minimizing the impact on others.
  • Consider alternatives: If you’re concerned about the inconvenience or restrictions of smoking on a cruise ship, consider alternative options such as nicotine patches, gum, or smokeless products. These can help satisfy your cravings without impacting others or violating rules.

Remember, a cruise ship is a shared space, and everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy their vacation without being negatively affected by someone else’s actions. By demonstrating respect and consideration for your fellow passengers and the cruise staff, you can contribute to a positive and enjoyable experience for all on board.

Smoking on a cruise ship can be a challenge, given the strict policies and considerations for the comfort of all passengers. However, with careful planning and respectful behavior, it’s possible to enjoy a discreet smoke while cruising the open seas.

By understanding the cruise ship’s smoking policies, selecting the right cabin, utilizing designated smoking areas, and minimizing the visibility and smell of smoke, you can increase your chances of getting away with smoking on a cruise ship. It’s important to dispose of smoking-related evidence properly and always prioritize respect and consideration for fellow passengers and crew members.

It’s essential to remember that smoking is a personal choice and not everyone onboard may share the same preference. Being mindful of others and following the rules not only helps maintain a harmonious environment but also ensures a pleasant cruise experience for everyone onboard.

Before lighting up, always take into account the potential penalties for violating the cruise line’s smoking policies and respect any non-smoking areas. Alternatively, consider exploring smokeless options to satisfy any cravings without impacting those around you.

Above all, remember that being a responsible and considerate passenger contributes to the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of the cruise for all onboard. So, if you decide to smoke, do so responsibly and with respect for your fellow adventurers.

How to Get Away With Smoking on a Cruise Ship

Whether you are looking to sneak a smoke in outside designated areas or perhaps get away with smoking weed on a cruise ship, we have covered some of the ways passengers have tried to get away with doing so.

We have also covered some alternative options, so you can get your fix, or reduce the desire, with less or without any smoke.

Remember, though, breaking the rules isn’t without risks – going against ship regulations may have its consequences, and whatever you do always remember the health and safety of other passengers onboard.

Using Designated Smoking Areas

The reality is, if your smoking cigarettes and cigars, you don’t need to get away with it.

Designated smoking areas are specific sections on a cruise ship where smoking is allowed.

These areas are purposefully allocated and clearly marked to ensure passengers who smoke can enjoy their habit without disturbing non-smoking guests.

Smoking areas may be indoors or outdoors, depending on the ship’s layout and policies.

Indoor smoking areas often include casinos or designated cigar bars, equipped with special ventilation systems to manage smoke.

These locations also often have additional amenities such as comfortable seating, ashtrays, and sometimes even drink service, creating a relaxed environment for smokers.

Outdoor smoking areas are generally sections of open decks, typically downwind to avoid bothering non-smokers. They are strategically positioned to prevent smoke from entering the ship’s interior spaces or nearby cabins. They are equipped with ashtrays and often have some form of shelter to protect smokers from adverse weather conditions.

These areas are not just for cigarette smokers but also often accommodate e-cigarette users and, sometimes, cigar smokers.

Pros: Abiding by the ship’s regulations removes the risk of any penalties or infringements. It’s a hassle-free and legitimate way to smoke.

Cons: The number, location, and availability of these smoking zones may be inconvenient. Some smokers might find them crowded, noisy, or exposed to elements, detracting from their smoking experience.

No smoking sign on table

Balcony Smoking

Cruise ships typically ban balcony smoking due to fire risk – a real concern for cruise lines.

Even a partially lit cigarette dropped on a balcony or flicked onto a lower deck can spark a blaze.

Moreover, the ban ensures passengers’ comfort, as many don’t appreciate smoke wafting over from adjacent balconies, not to mention the anxiety of potential fire hazards nearby.

However, there are still a few cruise lines that allow balcony smoking .

Pros: You are in a private space, away from the crowds, enjoying the sea view while smoking.

Cons : Despite the appealing prospect, smoking on the balcony is banned on almost all cruise ships due to fire risks.

Smoke can also disturb neighboring passengers, and overlooking decks or CCTV cameras can detect any rule violations, leading to penalties.

Cabin Smoking

Smoking in your cruise cabin might seem attractive due to the privacy and convenience.

However, cabins are equipped with sensitive smoke detectors and setting one off can lead to immediate attention from security.

Smoking in cabins is prohibited on most cruise lines in all forms, (although some may allow electronic cigarettes) due to fire safety, with penalties for violation ranging from cleaning fees to fines or even disembarkation in serious circumstances.

Besides, the persistent smell of smoke can disturb nearby passengers as well as future passengers staying in the room.

Pros: Your cabin is a private, enclosed space, away from other passengers, providing an illusory sense of security.  However,

Cons: Smoke detectors in almost every cabin can detect cigarette smoke, triggering an alarm. Violating cabin smoking policies can lead to cleaning fees, fines, or even expulsion from the ship. The only known exception to this rule is Costa Cruises, which allows e-cigarette vaping in cabins.

Smoking Weed on Cruise Ships

Cruise ships have a strict no-drugs policy, and this includes marijuana, regardless of its legal status in your home country or the ports visited.

Attempting to sneak weed onboard or smoke it can lead to serious repercussions.

Not only is the distinct odor of cannabis likely to attract attention, but if caught, you may face expulsion from the ship, potential legal issues in the next port, or even a lifetime ban from the cruise line.

However, some people still try to bring weed on a cruise , and then have to work out a way of getting away with smoking it.

Pros: There are no real advantages to smoking weed on a cruise ship due to its illegality.

Cons: The distinctive aroma of cannabis can attract unwanted attention, and getting caught may lead to severe consequences such as expulsion, potential arrest, or lifetime ban from cruising.

Additionally, luggage is usually thoroughly searched upon boarding, making the smuggling of cannabis onboard extremely risky.

Bathroom Smoking

Choosing the seclusion of the bathroom for a smoke might cross the minds of some cruisers, given its relative isolation and potential for privacy.

Initially, safeguard any garments in the vicinity, ensuring they’re outside the bathroom to prevent the absorption of the lingering smell of smoke.

Run a warm shower, to generate steam, which can help mask the distinct aroma of smoke as they merge. An active extractor vent is essential, serving to help disperse the smoke.

Next, place dampened towel at the base of the door to seal any spaces beneath the door, trapping the smoke within the bathroom.

While smoking, aim the ash towards the sink of running water to immediately wash away any traces.

When you’ve finished, use a fragrant air freshener, perfume or deodorant to hide any smoky odors.

Remember, though these measures may help reduce the chances of detection, they do not guarantee it, and breaking ship regulations carries potential repercussions.

Pros: The bathroom is a seemingly private, enclosed space that might seem ideal for containing smoke.

Cons: Bathrooms often contain smoke detectors, and the lingering smell can be detected by the cleaning or maintenance crew. Improper disposal of a cigarette could also pose a fire hazard. This method is strongly discouraged due to its violation of the ship’s rules.

While Delta-8 THC is increasingly sought-after due to its perceived gentler effects compared to its cousin Delta-9 THC, it’s important to note that its presence on cruise ships is strictly forbidden.

Pros: Delta 8 products might provide the desired effects for users without the potency of regular marijuana.

Cons: Despite its lower potency, cruise lines categorize Delta 8 in the same bracket as other marijuana products. Consequently, the use or possession of Delta 8 is completely prohibited onboard, reflecting the ban on marijuana substances in general.

Ways to Get Away With Smoking on a Cruise Ship

These are some methods passengers have reportedly used to get away with smoking on a cruise ship.

Using One-Hitters

A one-hitter is a small, discreet smoking device that holds enough product for one inhalation, hence the name. Its small size and quick use make it a favorite among some smokers.

One-hitters are easy to conceal and use, making them less likely to draw attention.

Although they’re discreet, using one-hitters still violates cruise ship smoking policies. Detection can result in penalties similar to those of other smoking methods.

Smoke Buddy

The Smoke Buddy is a personal air filter designed to reduce secondhand smoke and eliminate odor. The user exhales smoke into the device, and it releases filtered, odorless air.

A smoke buddy might help reduce the chances of detection in a closed space by minimizing smoke and odor.

Despite its effectiveness, using a Smoke Buddy doesn’t negate the fact that you’re violating the ship’s smoking policy. Detection could result in penalties.

What Happens if Caught Smoking on a Cruise Ship?

If you don’t break the rules, you don’t need to worry about being caught.

Ignoring the smoking policies of a cruise ship can have significant consequences, which can adversely affect both your vacation and your pocket.

Fines and Cleaning Fees

If you’re caught smoking in a non-smoking area, especially in your cabin or balcony, you may be slapped with a hefty cleaning fee.

This fee is used to deep-clean the room to remove any trace of the smoke smell before it can be used by the next passenger.

Depending on the cruise line, this could range from a couple of hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Eviction from the Ship

In severe cases or repeated offences, the cruise line might decide to remove you from the ship for being a potential fire hazard.

This means that you would be left at the next port of call and would be responsible for your travel arrangements back home.

The cost of the remainder of your cruise would not be refunded.

Alternative Smoking Options

If you’re a smoker who enjoys the feeling of smoking but don’t want to deal with the hassle of finding a smoking area, there are a few alternatives you could consider:

Nicotine Patches or Gum

These products provide a steady supply of nicotine to your system without the need for smoking. They can help reduce cravings and are a popular choice for those looking to quit smoking.

Nicotine Inhaler

These devices allow you to inhale nicotine in a manner similar to how you would smoke a cigarette. However, they do not produce any smoke, so they can be used in many places where smoking is not allowed.

Tobacco-Free Nicotine Pouches

These pouches are placed between your gum and lip. They provide a steady supply of nicotine without any smoke or tobacco. They are discreet and can be used anywhere.

Smokeless Tobacco

Products like snuff or chewing tobacco can provide a nicotine hit without the need for smoking. However, these products have their health risks and are not universally accepted.

If its weed your concerned about getting away with smoking, you might consider edible alternatives.  Although beware luggage is scanned and can be checked

While there may be ways to circumvent the smoking regulations on a cruise ship, the risk of penalties, including hefty fines, removal from the ship, or a permanent ban from the cruise line, makes it advisable to adhere to the rules.

Cruise lines have designated smoking areas for a reason, and these should be the only places where smoking is attempted.

Enjoy your cruise responsibly and respect the rules and regulations to ensure a pleasant and penalty-free journey.

Of course some people are still going to try and smoke and we’ve just covered some of the most well known methods.
