Australia's best cruises for 2022

Cruise Passenger

Cruise enthusiasts have been drifting in the doldrums of late, but it seems fresh winds are now picking up as a flotilla of cruises ships gets ready for the 2022 sailing season in Australia.

And with everything from fun-filled megaships to luxury small ships and intrepid expedition vessels heading our way, there’s plenty of variety on the horizon.

The big players are all promising full Australian seasons. Among P&O Australia’s mix of domestic voyages are Barrier Reef Discovery cruises out of Brisbane, A Taste of Tasmania cruises from Adelaide, and a four-night cruise return from Adelaide that visits Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island.

Meanwhile, P&O’s South Pacific cruises, most out of Cairns and Sydney, will visit destinations such as New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. From Brisbane, a series of seven-night Pacific Island Hopper itineraries take in Noumea, Port Vila and Lifou, with several days at sea so guests can enjoy the entertainment and amenities of Pacific Encounter.

Princess Cruises is also anticipating a busy Australian season in Australia. Coral Princess is returning to Brisbane for Pacific island and Papua New Guinea cruises. Royal Princess and Majestic Princess will operate round-trip cruises to New Zealand from Sydney, and Grand Princess from Melbourne. There will also be Queensland, Tasmanian and Fiji cruises from eastern homeports, cruises from Adelaide and Fremantle, and a 28-day Round Australia circumnavigation in October 2022.

Royal Caribbean’s 2022–23 season Down Under features two high-tech Quantum-class ships. From October 2022, Quantum of the Seas sails from Brisbane to destinations in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Ovation of the Seas sails from Sydney to Queensland, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Meanwhile, Radiance of the Seas has 22 departures from Sydney to destinations such as Great Barrier Reef, South Pacific, New Zealand and Tasmania.

Also arriving towards the end of 2022 is Celebrity Eclipse . Between September 2022 and April 2023, it will offer itineraries ranging from two-night sampler cruises to 18 night voyages in the Pacific, departing from Sydney and Auckland. The ship overnights in Adelaide, Cairns and Hobart on some itineraries, has added Port Arthur as a new port, and has 8pm departures from some ports that provide longer stays.

Tasmania is certainly tipped to be an ever-more popular destination. Carnival Cruise Line too is offering Tasmanian cruises on both its Australia-based ships. Carnival Splendor, homeported in Sydney, will also visit New Zealand in November 2022 before sailing to Papua New Guinea. Carnival Spirit, based in Brisbane, will operate three-day sampler crises and itineraries to the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

Cunard is homeporting Queen Elizabeth in Australia for a record 124 days between November 2021 and March 2022, culminating in a rendezvous with Queen Victoria in Sydney Harbour. Among the cruises is an inaugural Fiji and South Pacific journey and inaugural visits to Lautoka, Suva and Eden. The ship is back again at the end of 2022, sailing Fremantle–Sydney, Tasmanian cruises out of Melbourne, and New Zealand cruises from Melbourne and Sydney. The most spectacular offering is an Australian circumnavigation, round-trip from Bali.

Other large cruise lines are making briefer Australian appearances. The newly renovated Norwegian Spirit will sail Sydney–Auckland and Sydney–Bali in March 2022, a 14-day voyage from Sydney to Papeete in April, and returns for a Sydney–Auckland cruise in December. Holland America’s Oosterdam cruises Sydney–Auckland in early 2022 before heading onwards to Seattle. And Viking Cruises is sailing Sydney–Auckland cruises (or the reverse) in January, February and December 2022 and Sydney–Bali (or the reverse) in March.

Those looking for smaller luxury ships won’t be disappointed, either. Crystal Symphony sails Melbourne to Sydney in January on a predominantly New Zealand cruise, then Sydney–Bali. Crystal Serenity sails Auckland–Fremantle in February. Regent Seven Seas’ inaugural season here starts at the end of 2022 when Explorer sails Singapore–Sydney, followed by Sydney–Auckland itineraries.

Seabourn Odyssey visits from December 2022 to March 2023, with five 16-day voyages between Sydney and Auckland, and a 16-day Queensland Coast & Orchard Isles voyage from Sydney to Bali. Meanwhile, most of Oceania’s New Zealand cruises from Sydney in early 2022 are already sold out, but Regatta sails an Aussie Adventure circumnavigation in December 2022.

As for expedition cruising, the most varied Australian choices come from Coral Expeditions, including extended Kimberley sailing dates aboard new vessel Coral Geographer , a new 18-night Across the Top expedition between Broome and Cairns (or the reverse) in January 2022, and a new 14-night Great Southern Coastline cruise from Melbourne to Fremantle in March.

Ponant has two expedition ships in the Kimberley between March and September 2022, followed by a New Guinea cruise from Darwin, two Papua New Guinea cruises from Cairns, and an east-coast cruise to Sydney. It then offers a Tasmanian itinerary over Christmas and New Year. Silversea also returns for a Kimberley season. Silver Shadow will also sail Cairns–Melbourne in January 2022, followed by New Zealand itineraries from Sydney and Melbourne.

The most adventurous expedition offering is Aurora Expeditions’ all-new voyages from Hobart aboard Greg Mortimer to the Ross Sea and Commonwealth Bay in East Antarctica, running until March 2022. It’s the first time that the polar specialist has sailed this part of the Antarctic, where it will provide its usual adventurous excursions such as kayaking and polar snorkelling. The cruise also visits Australia’s remote Macquarie Island and New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands.

Roundup: Cruising In Australia 2022 Has Resumed (Finally)

Australia, New South Wales, NSW, Sydney, Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rocks area, Sydney Opera House, elevated view, daytime

Published 16 March 2022

It’s been a long two years for cruise lovers, but finally we’re here – cruising in Australia is back!

The Australian Federal Government will lift its ban on international cruise ships arriving and departing from Australian ports from 17 April 2022.

So, what’s changed in terms of COVID-19?

  • Passengers are required to be double vaccinated and undergo an enhanced process for pre-arrival reporting and identification of COVID-19 risk via questionnaires.
  • Additional state and territory public health requirements may also apply, and these are still being finalised at the time of writing.
  • Most cruise lines have their own set of post-pandemic protocols calling for things like pre-embarkation Covid testing and proof of vaccination.
  • These cruise line protocols also include safety measures such as: ensuring all crew are fully vaccinated; fewer guests on board; ventilation systems with improved filtration; enhanced sanitation throughout the ship; and capacity for on board quarantine if required.

Then of course there’s all the post-pandemic entry requirements issued by the host governments' health authorities of all the ports of call along the way.

While the resumption of cruising is exciting, before you embark on a cruise holiday we suggest you check out the latest government advice at Smartraveller .

Hands holding on cruise deck with cocktails

Because your cruise ship can take you to many ports in numerous countries, keeping up with government health authorities' ever-changing requirements around vaccination certification, COVID testing and travel health insurance can make for choppy waters.

So, for smooth sailing through all the red tape, it pays to book your cruise through a travel agent. We can unravel all these travel complexities for you and offer you advice to assist with choosing the best cruise for you.

Can I book a cruise now?

Absolutely! A host of cruise lines have been offering cruise deals and itineraries for 2022 and 2023 for several months already as they’ve been anticipating Australia’s lifting of the cruise ban for some time. Keen cruisers have been snapping these deals up, so the time to book a cruise is now!

What cruises are available?

The upshot of cruise deals steadily selling is that there’s a variety of cruise lines and cruise types to choose from. Here’s a selection:

P&O Cruises

P&O resumes cruising in Australia from 31 May 2022 with a 4-night roundtrip sailing from Sydney to Brisbane, where it will dock at the city’s new terminal on 2 June. The cruise line has also scheduled a selection of roundtrip Australian sailings from Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane this year.

Covid Protocols

All guests 12 years and over must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before travel and present a negative PCR test taken within three days of embarkation. Unvaccinated children aged 2 - 11 years just need to return a negative PCR test. P&O recommends that all guests eligible for boosters should have them.

Princess Cruises

Princess resumes Australian cruises from September this year, with a South Pacific cruise from Brisbane and shorter cruises from Sydney in October and a New Zealand cruise from Adelaide in December.

Guests must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before travel and present a negative PCR test taken within three days of embarkation. Princess highly recommends those eligible for boosters have them at least seven days prior to embarkation. Princess's "MedallionClass" lets guests decide the level of interaction and physical distancing they wish to have with other guests and crew.

Carnival Cruises

Carnival cruises return to Australia in October 2022, offering short out-to-sea-and-back “samplers” from Sydney and voyages departing Brisbane that take in the Queensland coast and the Great Barrier. Sydney to New Caledonia cruises resume from December.

All guests must complete pre-cruise vaccine attestation and update their contact information at Carnival's website . To be permitted on Carnival's vaccinated cruises, guests must have received their final dose of a Covid vaccine at least 14 days before their day of embarkation. Guests are also required to return a negative test taken within three days of sailing, or within two days if you're not fully up to date with any boosters you're eligible for. All guests on back to back international cruises must be tested between voyages regardless of their vaccination status. Unvaccinated children under five are permitted on vaccinated cruises.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is offering cruises departing from Australian ports later in 2022. These include 12- and 13-night cruises to New Zealand departing from Sydney from October 2022 and an 11-night cruise to the Great Barrier departing from Sydney in November 2022.

Guests must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before travel and present a negative PCR test taken within two days of embarkation. Unvaccinated children 11 years or under may board, with all those aged over two years needing to present a negative PCR test taken within three days of departure. All guests must also complete a health questionnaire before boarding.

Couple being served on cruise ship

Cunard offers 25- to 28-night Australian circumnavigation cruises from Perth and Sydney from November 2022. It’s offering shorter cruises taking in Tasmania and New Zealand from December 2022.

Cunard currently has a vaccination policy only in place until April or May 2022 (depending on which ship you're on). Under this policy, guests of all ages must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before travel. Because Cunard won't be sailing from any Australian ports before 7 November 2022, this policy no doubt will have changed by then.

Cruising is back: The best itineraries from Australia in 2022/2023

Can you hear the blast of foghorns? The first Australian cruise summer season in two years is officially here.

And, after such a long wait, we’re more eager than ever to get back on board. According to Google’s travel industry manager Harry Meagher, cruise-related searches have surged by a whopping 280 per cent in the past four months, and Flight Centre reports that cruise inquiries over the past month have doubled those during the same time period in 2019.

This is a revival that will be welcomed not just by holidaymakers. According to Joel Katz from Cruise Lines International Association, each port visit will bring new visitors and new opportunities for local communities helping to rebuild an industry previously worth more than $5bn a year to the Australian economy.

With 46 ships here or on their way, there’s a cruise for all tastes, and there’s a port nearby where you can embark. The big news is a number of ships will be home porting at the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, including Pacific Encounter, Carnival Luminosa, Quantum of the Seas and Coral Princess.

Wherever you choose to embark this season, there is a range of itinerary options on offer – circumnavigating Australia, short voyages along the east coast, and trips to New Zealand and the South Pacific, to name a few.

The Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas.

For food lovers

With specialty restaurants, celebrity chefs and menus celebrating local produce, cruise ships are undergoing a culinary revolution. Regent Seven Seas takes it up a notch with the Culinary Arts Kitchen on board Seven Seas Explorer, set to arrive in Australia in late December for her first Asia-Pacific season.

Here cruisers can get hands-on experience with expert chefs in a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen.

Meanwhile, Cunard is hosting the inaugural Great Australian Culinary Voyage, a five-day sailing on Queen Elizabeth featuring renowned chefs Matt Moran, Mark Olive and Darren Purchese.

Expect special events and talks, and the opportunity to sample incredible fare. The January voyage takes in Melbourne and Tassie before returning to Sydney.

For extended families

If a long-awaited multi-generational trip is on the cards, a cruise holiday is a genius choice.

Mum and Dad can slip off for a spa treatment or long lunch while Nan and Pop spend quality time with the little ones, and the whole family can come together to enjoy movies under the stars.

Princess Cruises offers an array of activities for any age group. Coral Princess is currently sailing, and local flagship Majestic Princess returns to Sydney this month, while Grand Princess debuts this month too.

The line has partnered with Discovery and Animal Planet to offer special ocean and wildlife-based programs for kids, including experiments, trivia, and arts and crafts.

Extended families can expect an array of choices when Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Eclipse arrives in port later this month. Kids will love spending time at Camp at Sea, while the grown-ups might like to meet up for a post-shore excursion drink – the cruise line has a new partnership with Aussie fave Four Pillars Gin.

Spice H2O is an adults-only area on the Norwegian Spirit.

For intrepid explorers

Head off the beaten track and truly immerse yourself in little-visited destinations on an expedition cruise. Because the vessels are smaller, they are able to visit remote ports.

From October, APT’s 99-guest MS Caledonian Sky will sail on expedition cruises around Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland. Its Cape York and the Great Barrier Reef Expedition visits remote islands of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea en route to Thursday Island.

Coral Expeditions offers small-group itineraries in the Kimberley, Tasmania and South Australia, as well as a one-off circumnavigation of Australia on Coral Adventurer from October to December.

Ponant’s Le Lapérouse and Le Soléal have been operating in the Kimberley region since May and will continue to sail to destinations in Australia, New Zealand and Asia into 2023. In April, the 32-passenger, three-masted sailing yacht Le Ponant will arrive for the Kimberley season.

Ripcord by iFLY, a skydiving simulator on the Royal Caribbean.

For thrillseekers

Anyone who loves an adrenaline rush is in for a treat, with the arrival of not one but two Royal Caribbean Quantum Class ships to our shores.

Both Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature “first-at-sea” experiences, including the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, the FlowRider surf simulator and SeaPlex, which features a full basketball court, bumper cars and roller skating. Come November, Quantum of the Seas will homeport in Brisbane, and from the end of October, Ovation of the Seas will sail from Sydney.

Aquatic daredevils should make a direct path to the Green Lightning thrill-slide on Carnival Splendor. The adventure begins with an 11.3m free-fall drop followed by a slingshot curve, twisting and sliding guests into a giant swirling bowl.

Breakfast at The Grill aboard the Silver Muse.

For entertainment lovers

Look no further than the high seas this summer season for exceptional theatre and live performances.

Expect to be wowed by a new production on board P&O Cruises. The adults-only Blanc de Blanc – Uncorked is a Parisian-inspired show currently on stage on board Pacific Encounter, and soon to be on board Pacific Adventure when she sails this month.

Meanwhile, P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer will salute the King of Rock and Roll on a themed Elvis cruise departing Melbourne in December. Expect to see renowned impersonators perform, and you can even master your own version of Hound Dog at karaoke.

Holland America Line has two ships arriving in Australia in November. On these, cruisers can take a seat at Lincoln Center Stage, which has an exclusive partnership with the New York Performing Arts Centre. Additionally, on Westerdam, you can dance to live soul and blues at BB King’s Blues Club.

Ponant's Le Laparouse sauna along the Kimberley coast.

For those who love to be spoiled

Keen for a voyage that involves extra pampering? Expect door-to-door service with a limousine pick-up and exceptional butler service when sailing with ultra-luxury line, Silversea .

Your dedicated white-gloved butler is at your service to organise your shore excursions, shine your shoes and draw your bath. The line will bring the all-suite Silver Muse, Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper to Australia from December to March.

Love a spa treatment? Norwegian Spirit, a Norwegian Cruise Lines vessel which has had a $US100m revitalisation, has just doubled the size of the Mandara Spa.

Relax in the Thermal Suite before heading to the adults-only Spice H20 pool retreat, which transforms into an open-air cocktail lounge and nightclub after dark. The vessel arrives at our shores in December.

Cunard's Queen Elizabeth at the Overseas Passenger terminal in Sydney.

For a solo journey

After the past couple of years, who doesn’t want a bit of “me time”?

Cruising can be the perfect way to holiday for solo travellers. Imagine days exploring ports then stepping back on board for a spa treatment before sampling culinary delights at intimate restaurants. And you can choose to dip in and out of group activities when you desire.

Oceania Cruises caters to solo cruisers with dedicated staterooms. Its Regatta ship arrives in Sydney in December and offers 14 spacious Solo Oceanview staterooms featuring the Tranquility Bed and Bulgari amenities. The ship will sail on a 35-night circumnavigation of Australia, as well as to the South Pacific.

Another line that caters well to solo cruisers is Azamara. The line features small-group destination-immersive excursions, and back on board, often hosts meet-ups for solo cruisers. The 710-guest Azamara Quest will arrive in Fremantle in mid-December and then sail on a variety of cruises until late February.

4 months at sea? Princess Cruises releases details about 2026 world tour

Want to travel the world? Have the stomach to spend one-third of the year at sea?

If the answer to both of those questions is yes, and you have $20,000 to spend, Princess Cruises has the trip of a lifetime for you.

The cruise line has released details about an upcoming world cruise that will visit 52 ports in 28 countries, spanning six continents and traveling 35,000 nautical miles.

The 2026 Princess World Cruise is a 114-day voyage aboard the Coral Princess, a nearly 1,000-foot cruise ship with room for about 2,000 passengers.

The massive globe-trotting cruise takes ships off from two U.S. ports — Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Jan. 5, 2026 and from Los Angeles on Jan. 21, 2026.

The 2026 cruise will visit the most destinations ever for a Princess cruise ship, but tickets don’t come cheap. Entry level reservations start at around $20,000 but go up depending on your preferred accommodations.

But if booked before Oct. 31 of this year, travelers will receive a free “Princess Premier Package” that comes with WiFi, premium alcoholic beverages, once-weekly specialty dining, unlimited “casual dining,” unlimited fitness classes and reserved theater seating — among other perks.

Princess says those early bookings also come with onboard credits, special discounts and free transfers from local airports.

Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises, says the company’s world cruises address growing demand for longer cruises that stop in more “exotic destinations.”

“Our 2026 World Cruise offers our most destination-rich itinerary ever so guests can immerse themselves in a global experience rich with landmarks, ancient ruins, unique landscapes, wildlife, gastronomy, cultures and heritage,” Thornton said in a news release.

The 2026 World Cruise will stop at several destinations that Princess has never visited, including Boracay, Philippines; Puerto Chiapas, Mexico; and Ponta Delgada, Portugal.

The cruise will spend more time at some popular ports, including Singapore; Sydney, Australia; and Honolulu, Hawaii, as well as one overnight stay in Hong Kong. The full 52-destination trip will provide access to 45 UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the globe.

The cruise line says destination-specific events and entertainment will be provided throughout the trip.

Full itineraries and booking information for the 2026 Princess World Cruise can be found online . Those who want to tag along but are unable to join for the entire journey can book cruise segments that come with shorter sailing times.

The 2024 World Cruise is a 111-day journey aboard the Island Princess which shipped off from Los Angeles in mid-January. Next year’s U.S.-based world cruise is the longest ever at 116 days. Princess also offers world cruises that depart from Australia later in the year.
