These New Tree Houses in New York's Finger Lakes Are Perfect for Winter — With Private Hot Tubs, a Sauna, and Cozy Interiors

Finger Lakes Treehouse is the state's first tree house accommodation.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

It’s officially hygge season in most of North America. And while a vacation at a lake house might be out of the question, a treehouse — with its own wood-fired hot tub — is most definitely not.

Tis’ the season to visit Finger Lakes Treehouse , a series of elevated A-frame homes in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The 48-acre property opened in July 2023 and is bookable year-round. But with a private hot tub adjacent to the cozy A-frame cabin and an electric sauna, we’d argue this spot is ideal for — and maybe even built-for — the winter season.

The property in Sodus, New York is the eighth tree house project of Darrel Maxam and Patrice Coney Maxam, an Atlanta-based couple who built their first tree house in their backyard in 2015. Over the years, their tree house rentals have grown both in size and popularity. Their most popular offerings to date include a 1956 Airstream and Spartan trailer hybrid that’s tucked high in the trees and a home-sized tree house with a private hot tub and a massive deck.

Courtesy of Finger Lakes Treehouse & Spa

But there is no denying that the new Finger Lakes Treehouse, which has five separate A-frame homes, is the Maxams' largest project to date. Each independent home, which is set on stilts and adjacent to a large, elevated deck, has a bedroom, bathroom, and a kitchenette with all the necessities: a small fridge and freezer, a two-burner electric stovetop, a microwave, pots and pans, glasses and mugs, and utensils. The space is small, efficient, and modern, with interior design touches that the Maxams have become known for.

On the wooden deck surrounding each home is a private hot tub under a pergola overlooking the woods. There is also a private seating area below each elevated house, with a personal fire pit available upon request. Guests can also grill outdoors at the Finger Lakes Treehouse’s communal charcoal grill or hang in the seating area along the water.

Added perks include access to a five-person electric sauna, a pickleball court, and free bike rentals. The property is a popular wedding destination and dogs are allowed in the designated pet-friendly unit for an additional $65.

The Finger Lakes Treehouse may be the couple's latest project, but it won’t be their last. They are on a mission to “build 20 unique, tree house hotels all across the world” under the Maxam Hotel brand. Next up: Belize .

This Is The Most Remote Small Town In New York

The town of Sodus Point may be remote but it is full of history and is one of the most beautiful places in the Finger Lakes region.

  • Sodus Point, NY, a hidden gem near Finger Lakes with rich history, offers beautiful surroundings and plenty of outdoor activities.
  • The town served as an important port, Underground Railroad station, and WWII POW camp, attracting nature lovers and history enthusiasts.
  • Sodus Point residents enjoy a budget-friendly and active lifestyle, with skiing, boating, and community events year-round.

The state of New York is known for so much more than New York City. However, from a tourist standpoint, it is the Big Apple that gets all the attention. But outside the city is the Finger Lakes region. The Finger Lakes area feels a million miles away from the city due to its charming small towns . Locals find communities in the area a welcome respite when seeking a quiet weekend or a summer retreat away from the hustle and bustle of it all.

15 Things To Do In Finger Lakes: Complete Guide To New York's Scenic Region

Filled with flora and fauna, views of the Great Lakes, and large bodies of water that are equally impressive, the Finger Lakes region stretches for 9,000 square miles. The area is built for outdoor adventure and wine tasting, all while passing through charming small towns. One of those small towns is the most remote in New York. And this town on Lake Ontario has a reputation of always playing second fiddle to Finger Lakes. For those who make the trek to Wayne County, all will admit the journey was worth it.

Sodus Point, New York Is A Location Rich With History

Sodus point was once a prominent port on lake ontario, a location for the underground railroad, and the location of a pow camp.

Sodus Point, New York is the most remote of small towns in the state. Located on Lake Ontario, Sodus Point is right in the middle of the Finger Lakes region. But what makes Sodus Point different from the other small towns in the area is that it is a "destination" rather than a place that is discovered while en route to other locales via scenic drives in the Finger Lakes region .

When people come to visit Sodus Point, they are first taken by the fact that the peninsula the town is located on is surrounded on three sides by bodies of water, Great Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario, specifically. It is these same bodies of water that made Sodus Point such an important port for trade between the United States and Canada .

Later in the 1850s, Sodus Point made up a portion of the Underground Railroad as enslaved people making their way to freedom could travel via secret tunnels all through the Finger Lakes region to the port and sail their way across Lake Ontario to Canada.

Camping At The Finger Lakes: 10 Best State Parks With Cabin Rentals

Sodus Point was also once a location of a POW camp for German soldiers during WWII . FOrtunately, the prisoners were not relegated to the same conditions that POWs faced in Germany. Instead of returning to Germany after the war ended, some of the soldiers stayed in the region and called Sodus Point and other areas of the Finger Lakes region home.

What Life Is Like Living In Sodus Point, New York

Sodus point is a community of active residents.

Sodus Point has become one of the most popular areas of the Finger Lakes region in more recent years. Developers have come into the region and have created small communities within Sodus Point for those who love small town life to call home. But that does not mean the town has lost its charm. With only 825 residents , there is little fear of the area getting over-developed.

The reason that Sodus Point is such a popular place to live has to do with the number of activities there are to do year-round . Some of those activities include:

Sodus Point is also just a short drive to Rochester. As such, for those who want to live in an area that is more budget-friendly versus paying the higher prices of larger cities in New York state, Sodus Point makes for a great option as well. This is because the average price for a house in Sodus Point is $324,900 . This is below the average price of a home in New York state, which is currently $450,431 .

When it comes to gas prices, it may be believed that, given its remote location, Sodus Point would have higher prices than larger cities. However, this is not the case. In Sodus Park, the current prices are $3.34 per gallon , whereas in Rochester, the prices are $3.47 per gallon .

What to do when visiting sodus point, new york, there are attractions, bars, wineries, and great restaurants in sodus point.

It should be noted that Sodus Point, while a tourist destination, is not a weekend getaway-friendly location. This is because the town does not have any hotels or bed and breakfasts to stay at. For those who want to stay in the town, the options are for VRBOs or homes that are used specifically for long-term rentals during the summer months, located on the shoreline.

Despite this, there is plenty to do and see while visiting Sodus Point. Be it venturing out to historic lighthouses or catching a delicious bite to eat, there is something for everyone.

On a Celebrity cruise you can dine in a different restaurant at every meal, thanks to our unparalleled selection of world-class dining options. Choose casual or upscale, sushi or Italian, inside or alfresco under the stars. Best of all, every dish is prepared from scratch by more than 200 chefs from around the world, led by our Michelin-starred chef.

With up to a dozen specialty restaurants, and an array of bars, lounges, and clubs—we offer some of the best dining experiences at sea.

Our clients know that the perks and possibilities of a cruise vacation are endless, which is why it is one of the most popular vacations we provide in our agency. With many options for ships, itineraries, and budgets, clients are able to find a vacation that fits their criteria. From small river cruises through Europe to the mega-ship experiences in the Caribbean, there really is a cruise experience for everyone…and we can help clients find their best fit! Whether traveling alone, as a couple, as a family, or as a large group, cruising is a fun experience that can easily be tailored for everyone's vacation preferences.

  • Passengers traveling alone will have many options to meet other cruisers through a variety of meet-and-greet type activities on the ship, or can enjoy a quiet vacation if preferred.
  • Couples looking for romance can dine at tables for two or engage in fun activities for newlyweds and not-so-newlyweds.
  • Families with children of all ages can utilize the kids' clubs for separate fun, and then regroup for family time and memory-making.
  • Large groups can enjoy meetings and activities through arranged spaces and schedules, and then partake in ship activities together.

Why is cruising a great vacation for so many travelers?

Food and drink on board cruise ships are both incredible - ships once known for the endless buffet are now also known for their intimate specialty dining restaurants, wine tastings, family-friendly parties and character meals , and more. With optional all-inclusive beverage packages available, along with champagne tastings, martini bars, coffee shops, and poolside service, sipping at sea has never been so extravagant.

Some clients plan a cruise itinerary with many sea days while others like the activity of many port visits. No matter the preference or itinerary, each passenger is able to arrange a vacation that is as relaxing or as busy as desired. Zip-line through the jungle in the morning, then enjoy lunch and a book by the pool in the afternoon…with cruising, anything is possible. Be lazy or be active - the choices are endless when planning a day on the ship or at a port! We are also happy to help guide clients in their excursion planning so they do not feel stressed about deciding how to spend their time at various ports.

Because each cruise port has so much to offer, passengers can experience many cultures and activities in one vacation. Sampling many destinations without unpacking and repacking is a perk of cruising that many clients love because they can experience a variety of destinations within a short period of time and then determine where they would like to return for a longer stay.

Cruises are an outstanding value. When considering everything included in the cost per day, many clients are amazed at the type of vacation they can enjoy, even on a budget!

Linda has worked in the travel industry for 30 years - she began her career as an outside sales consultant with Destination Travel Co, and seven years later took over as owner and manager. Linda especially loves to plan vacations for groups - the more unique the destination or itinerary, the better! Her two favorite aspects of working in the travel industry are the variety of travel plans a work day can bring, and the fantastic clients she has come to know and befriend over the years. Linda's favorite travel destination is Italy, particularly the Amalfi Coast and Tuscany. Besides travel, Linda loves to cook and spend time with her family.

Shelly has worked with Destination Travel Co for seventeen years and is happy to plan vacations of all varieties, although her favorite trips to arrange include cruises, all-inclusive resort vacations, Globus tours, and Avalon Waterways river cruises. Her favorite part of working as a travel agent is planning special memories for clients. Shelly's most memorable vacations include Italy, Greece, and cruising the British Isles with a visit to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Ruth Ann retired from her career with American Airlines and has worked for Destination Travel Co for approximately 20 years. Ruth Ann really likes to help clients plan cruise vacations, all-inclusive resort getaways, destination weddings, and other sorts of active vacations. She also works with businesses to arrange incentive travel as a reward for their hardworking employees. Ruth Ann often jokes that her favorite destination is "her next one!" She looks forward to any vacation, no matter the duration or location; however, you are most likely to find her on a cruise ship or at an all-inclusive resort. Outside of travel planning, Ruth Ann's interests include yoga (she is an instructor), swimming, and other outdoor activities. She enjoys all of the fun attractions, events, and activities Northeast Ohio has to offer.

All-Inclusive Resort Packages

All-inclusive resort clients love the ease of travel this sort of vacation provides - packages generally include airfare, round-trip transfers, and resort stays*, so clients only need to worry about which swimsuit to pack and how they are going to spend their days enjoying luxurious amenities in a tropical paradise! With numerous resorts scattered throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, it can be difficult to select one for vacation...this is when using a travel agent can be especially helpful. We use our clients' experiences along with our personal and professional experiences to help match our clients with an appropriate resort that features their desired amenities, activities, and atmosphere.   Are you dreaming of a massage on the beach with the sea breeze whispering in your ear? Are you imagining walking a white sandy beach at sunset with the person you love most? Are you exploring Mayan ruins with your camera in hand? There are many experiences to be had while enjoying an all-inclusive vacation, and we can help you enjoy yourself in paradise! We can help you get to many destinations, including Cancun/Riviera Maya and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. *Many resorts in the Caribbean (particularly outside of Mexico and the Dominican Republic) feature a European Plan, rather than an All-Inclusive Plan.

Many dream of seeing the world but are hesitant to experience other countries and cultures on their own, so a tour package can be a fun, budget-friendly, stress-free option for those who wish to become international travelers.

  • With options ranging from fully-escorted tours to more independent tours, we can help match clients with their travel preferences.
  • Many tours allow for customization - this means that even though a client is selecting a package, it can be tailored to meet their needs by adding excursions, booking extra nights pre or post tour, upgrading hotels, etc.
  • Inclusions vary depending on the tour company, but transportation during the length of the tour, hotel stays, some meals and some attractions are generally part of the package rates.
  • Tours are less stressful and usually less expensive than trying to piece together an international adventure a la carte, and we can find options for many budgets to many exciting destinations around the world.

If you want to get out into the world with your passport in hand, or even just explore the amazing United States in a unique way, let us help you make arrangements for a tour package!

Nickelodeon Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico

photo from Travel Agent Central

Karisma Hotels & Resorts, a beloved brand among travel agents, has announced an opening date for their first Nickelodeon Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. (Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana opened in 2016 and has been very popular with families.) The resort is scheduled to open in spring/summer 2019 and will feature Aqua Nick, an almost 5oo,ooo square foot waterpark that includes a lazy river, toddler water playgound, waterslides, dining options, and more. Because the Karisma brand is known for its culinary offerings (the Gourmet Inclusive Experience), the resort will boast six restaurants that feature menu items served with produce grown at the company's greenhouse at the nearby El Dorado Royale Riviera Maya Resort. Accommodations will include character-themed penthouses, oceanfront swim-up rooms, and more. Why we're excited: Karisma resorts are highly regarded in the industry, and provide clients, whether adults or children, great resort experiences. The food is always a standout, and the resorts feel more upscale without being stuffy. Having another resort with a great waterpark is very exciting for the area, and because we send more clients to Mexico than any other all-inclusive destination, we are thrilled to have another activity-packed, fun family resort to offer. 7 ways to travel more sustainably.

Sustainable travel can be fun, rewarding and not at all challenging

Sustainable travel is surging in popularity, but what does it mean? The vague term can refer to traveling in a way that’s conscientious of the environment and local communities, leaving less of an impact on a destination and perhaps even bettering the location in the process. Sustainable tourism, in many ways a reaction to overtourism, helps protect the planet, to ensure destinations are liveable and worth visiting for years to come. And while travel can certainly takes its toll, creating carbon emissions, waste and more, responsible tourism is an essential step in protecting the planet.

Sustainable Travel Tips

Responsible tourism helps the environment by limiting ecological impact, supporting indigenous wildlife, respecting cultural heritage, and not taking away from a destination as a visitor, be it removing a shell from a beach or littering on a hiking trail. Plenty of responsible travel itineraries are easily replicable, but many trips can be adapted to be more sustainable. There are so many ways, big and small, to travel more responsibly and sustainably. Here’s how to start:

1. TSA-Friendly Doesn’t Need To Be Earth Hostile

You can buy single use and tiny versions of pretty much every care product these days, but do you actually need to? Opt for refillable travel bottles to decant your normal products into, and you’ll always have TSA-friendly bottles of shampoo, lotion, whatever you need at the ready. If you prefer to travel without liquids, consider switching to bars of shampoo and conditioner toothpaste powder and other products, which are eco-friendly wherever you are.

Planning ahead can be a major factor in sustainable travel

2. Opt For Public Transit

Public transportation — buses, trains, light rail, etc. — is always more sustainable than a private ride. If possible, use public transit to get to and from your destination and learn your destination’s public transit system to navigate while you explore. Not only will you likely save money as well as lower your carbon footprint, you’ll get a taste of how locals live. If public transit isn’t an option, consider booking shared rides to the airport and excursions, or renting an electric or hybrid vehicle if driving solo is the only option.

A bit of planning ahead can save considerable landfill waste. Bringing a reusable coffee cup for morning coffee runs and reusable water bottle will hopefully cut down the amount of single-use items you purchase on the go. Other easy to pack items including a reusable travel utensil set, reusable straws and reusable earplugs can help avoid creating more waste on the road. If you’re someone who discards beach reads, consider switching to an e-reader. Pack tote bags to carry souvenirs or other items purchased on the road that won’t require disposable plastic bags.

4. Eat Conscientiously

Eating local is the best way for your diet to support local eco-systems. Not only does dining at independent, small businesses (e.g. not chains), support local business people, but can often have lower environmental impact than major franchised restaurants that ship ingredients and supplies across the country. Making lower impact choices, including eating mostly plant-based, when possible, can also make travel a bit greener. If you don’t have anything to do with leftovers, consider ordering with a bit more restriction so you aren’t creating an excess of food waste.

Local culinary experiences can be healthy, fulfilling and sustainable

5. Book A Sustainable Hotel

Staying at a property dedicated to sustainability can make a big impact, especially by showing the travel industry that this is a priority for hospitality. Hotels are offered various certifications to prove their sustainable status, which can be achieved as a remote eco-lodge or luxury property in a major city. Several hotels are seeking LEED certification , the Green Hotels Association has a collection of vendors who prioritize sustainability, and the Leading Hotels of the World has a sustainability collection of five star properties.

6. Buy Carbon Offsets

While we technically can’t undo the damage we cause to the environment, there are initiatives to at least mitigate it. Carbon offsets allow consumers to compensate for their carbon footprint by funding projects that reduce carbon dioxide pollution. CoolEffect.org can help you decide how much to give, based on trip itinerary and logistics. For example, to offset air travel, a roundtrip, 6-hour flight would add about 1.89 tons of CO2 per passenger, and $31.17 of carbon offsets would help mitigate that.

Some airlines offer the option to purchase carbon offsets alongside airfare

7. Slow Down Your Travel

Slow travel is a buzzword that’s emerged in the 2020s, when work and leisure travel aka bleisure have melded more than ever, and the concept of working and even socializing remotely is totally normalized. Rather than a quick jaunt back and forth, slow travel emphasizes taking your time with tourism, be it living in a rental property for a month and enjoying the sights on the weekends, going backpacking, biking or hiking for an extended off the grid period, or traveling via train instead of air. Slow tourism has been proven to have a positive environmental impact .
