Minelab Safari – A Professional Metal Detector For A Beginner (Review, Photos+)

Greetings reader! One of my fellow detectorists bought himself a Minelab Safari and shared his experience and review of this interesting and not very common metal detector. I thank him for the review and give him the word:

What kind of metal detector is the Minelab Safari?

Well, finally I got my hands on a professional level device with a rather big price of 700 euros and a so-called model range in 2009. By the way, remember what gadgets were at that time and how they were? At the time, it was a quite competitive and serious piece of engineering. What experience do I have with other detectors before I bought the safari? I used to have the Ace 250 with the Nel Sharpshooter coil and the Fisher F44. These detectors are very easy to understand, and because I am the person lazy and I do not like any complicated settings, I appreciate the simple and clear interfaces.

I bought a rain cover for my detector, because after all the metal detector is not waterproof and it is necessary to protect expensive equipment.

What I liked

Turning on the detector I was very pleasantly surprised that the menu was so simple that after a couple of minutes you already know how to use it. The menu has no “hidden” mode and settings. It is easy to understand, but anyway I would recommend to read the instruction manual before use – then all questions about setting up and using the detector will disappear.

The detector has simplicity, the high quality, but a pretty decent weight, because it uses 8 AA batteries. But one thing that threw me off with the Minelab Safari was the promised FBS technology which allows the metal detector to work simultaneously on a 28-frequencies – from 1.5 to 100 kHz, and this should allow (in theory) equally detect large objects at the maximum depth (due to the low frequencies – 3 kHz), and small things (due to the high frequency spectrum – 20 kHz or more). Since Safari costed less than the E-Trac, my choice fell on it.

Without reading the manual, I went detecting to a sand area nearby. The device immediately began giving all kinds of signals, but I quickly understood that they were trash signals. Suddenly, among all this trash I got a good signal, I dug: a modern coin. After about half an hour I had found two coins, and please note – no foil or other kinds of trash.

Still I hesitated, a detector in such a range can’t be this simple and perhaps there are some hidden features, but after reading the manual, I found nothing. I have the impression that the detector either is too smart, or I did not really understand what it signals to me.

Of course, I wanted to hurry and get some experience in the field. In the fields, I had the same result, my friend with the Deus dug a lot of trash, while I only got a few signals, one of them being a brass ring. In 4 hours I dug three signals, but something to notice – no foil and wire, like a fellow with the Deus.

What I disliked

It seemed to me that detecting was a bit boring, because you have to swing the coil very slowly, and even then, when you hear a signal you have to go back and check it, and if the place is very littered, the detector slowly receives the signals – this could be a slow processor and a large amount of information coming at it, yet at the same time it scans in 26 frequencies, and when the signal reaches the ears, the place where the object was, is now gone.

With the long and slow swipes, and the long time between digs, your hand gets quickly tired and begin to freeze. The detector is very interesting and intelligent. It is quite suitable for those who do not like a lot of digging and only want to dig good targets.

The secret of detecting with the Minelab Safari

To get maximum results in detecting, you better wave it slow over the fields, which will give a minimum of signal passes. It is better to move slowly, but to collect more finds. But again, for the exploration it is always better to have an extra detector, one with which you can quickly run through the field with to find the coin areas (the coins on the field never lie evenly and are concentrated more in certain areas), and then to search there with the Minelab safari (mentally make squares of 5 by 5 meters, for example).

The depth on it is trimmed (it is not the E-Trac, but it also costs less), and therefore it is better to replace the standard coil to another, from a third party. A gain of 20% -30% is guaranteed.

I disagree with your post I’ve had my safari for a good few years found good stuff don’t hardly dig trash as you said in your review if you only want to dig good targets well who wants to dig rubbish certainly not me I think you need abit more time with the safari yes you do have to have a slow swing but that’s not that bad

Explorer , safari , etrac ..

Tbey are more or less all the same , Providing real FBS system and resl accuracy.

Etrac is not much deeper fir sure .. The safari is just a little more handicapped sinceyu can tweak it less.

The explorer 2 , altough older has the same depth as the etrac.. sinoly becaue you can tweak it as you want . Etrac is just a little bit faster .

All the explorers are great , superb if you ask me . Low and slow will make you a better detectirist and slows you down forcing you to investigate a little better .

I have run them all and no other detectir ever called a detector is better then one of them wich does not mean a tesoro vaquero or deus is bad , No , they are great tools too , fast , light and all ..

Minelab Safari Hobby Metal Detector

The Minelab Safari is serious piece of metal detecting hardware that gives users some of the best depth and accuracy readings in the market. This is a powerful detector that’s great for finding all manner of treasures, from coins and relics to small nuggets of gold.

While the hardware is certainly impressive it doesn’t add too much in terms of weight and size. The total weight is around 1.8kg with the coil and stem combined, which is on the heavier side compared to certain detectors, but the high-performance makes it more than worth it.

The steam can be adjusted too if it’s too long or short, which is great because you always want the correct length to avoid straining your back when using the detector. With a maximum length of 54 inches, it should be fine for taller people, while the minimum length of 43 inches is fine for anyone shorter – it may not be too good for children though, espiecally given the heavier weight.

At first glance, the settings on the control box may seem daunting, but they are relatively straight-forward to learn. For instance, there is a clear display on the LCD screen that highlights all the detectors info, including depth, identification, battery life, and what mode is in use.

With 11 buttons it does seem like a lot to learn, but most of these are rather basic in their function. For example, you have a power button, navigation buttons, and accept/reject buttons, while there are four mode options surrounding the screen.

The pre-set modes just require one hit and you start searching for specific metals using discrimination to distinguish between various items. It’s standard modes for a metal detector, with all metal mode, relic mode, coin mode, and coin and jewellery modes available.

These are ideal for those that aren’t that experienced with how to set their detector for more precising searching, while the option to create a custom search mode will certainly appeal to experience users that know what they’re looking for.

The Minelab Safari utilises full band spectrum (FBS) technology, which results in an operating frequency between 1.5kHz and 100kHz. It’s a notable feature of the detector, as not many in this price range have FBS technology, which greatly improves the overall performance of the Minelab Safari.

This allows users to make use of 28 different frequencies, providing much better sensitivity, depth and accuracy readings. By using digital filtering, the Minelab Safari eliminates those problematic ground signals that would otherwise slow down a hunt. It helps to improve performance in all conditions too, so is a great feature that helps the Minelab Safari stand out from most it its competition.

Other modes are available that further enhance the performance of the Minelab Safari. Pinpoint is a standard feature but one you always expect, allowing you to pinpoint the specific area of the metal to start your digging. Simply start pressing pinpoint after receiving a good signal and you’ll find that target with greater accuracy.

Another fantastic mode is trash density. This feature allows you to set the coil to different density options depending on where you might be, allowing the detector to better distinguish between trash items, like foil and ring-pulls, and wanted targets. It’s great for detecting in trash-heavy lands, significantly reducing the amount junk finds by setting to high trash density mode.

There is also a low trash setting mode, which is best used on those remote locations where you don’t expect to find high volumes of trash, Given the frequency range of the Minelab Safari, the trash density mode is very reliable, reducing the amount of junk finds during your hunt.

The Minelab Safari offers great value for money for those seeking a high-performance metal detector at a reasonable price. Various pre-set modes make it easy enough to use for beginners, but experienced detectorists are really going to appreciate the power, sensitivity, and accuracy of the Minelab Safari.

Minelab Safari Pro Review in 2024

Simply put, to summarise everything that I’ve written bellow is that the Minelab Safari looks sleek and feels sturdy having great precision for most of the tasks.

Simply looking at the Minelab Safari you instantly can see why the minelab detectors are one of the leading manufacturers in the metal detecting niche.

Everything about their products makes a statement of quality and professionalism and that’s what I like about them.

Is Minelab Safari Pro waterproof?

No, only the coil is waterproof.

Assembly of the machine, when it arrives, does not take a degree and can be done in just a matter of minutes. It’s amazing considering that this is not a novice metal detector, that’s what I like about Safari model, it’s simple and it comes in just a few parts.

The coil, the lower shaft, upper shaft & control box and then the arm-strap.

You simply attach them all together and you are about ready to go, the arm-strap at the top is adjustable for your extra comfort also.

Not only this but you can move the arm-rest if it is in the wrong position for you.

I have arms like a T-Rex so this would be perfect for me.

The shaft length is something you can also alter, again for me this is a much-appreciated design feature, as I’m rather short.

They are also positioned really well, which gives another nice touch to the design, letting you operate without having to spend to much time looking at the panel.

Buttons and Modes of the Minelab Safari

There are just 11 buttons on the Safari, which as I have said previously makes it less complicated to understand and operate. Along with an LCD display that is also easy to operate and read. The buttons are as follows.

• Power, which of course switches on and off. Or by holding resets the detector.
• Coin & Jewelery which puts the detector into the coin & jewelery mode.
• Coin which activates the coin mode.
• Pinpoint which turns the pinpoint feature on & off, allowing you to locate the exact position of a target.
• Minus & Plus buttons, these are used in conjunction with the menu button, letting you navigate through the options and change settings.
• Menu which accesses different stages and options of the Safari.
• Relic activates the relic hunting mode.
• All Metal which activates the all metal mode.
• Noise cancel, searches for the quietest operating frequency.
• Accept & Reject, if pressed while in detecting mode, accepts or rejects the located target.

The Minelab Safari’s LCD screen displays a depth Gauge, allowing you to view the approximate depth location of the target.

A Target ID number which gives us a better clue of the identification of the target, it’s displayed with numbers from -10 through to +40 different targets will bring up different numbers, and you can use this to discriminate against certain metal compositions.

There is a mode indication symbol which tells us which mode we are in and if we have modified a mode, and saved it.

Battery life icons.

Target Icons which indicates which lets us know what it is we are likely to have located, I have to say the reviews from around the internet are mixed on this, with some saying it works well but others not so impressed and finally a graphic indication bar used for discrimination patterns.

Features and Performance of the Minelab Safari

What I liked most about the Safari, was the fact it is a professional powerful machine that has also included features that a beginner could operate the machine with.

So it appeals to all levels of detectorists across the board.Accuracy is also something else that people praise the machine for.

You have your preset modes that are simply selected and away you go, but then you have the option to modify and customize.

The machine features an 11 inch, Ultra Lightweight Double-D waterproof coil (machine is not fully waterproof, however)

FBS Multiple frequency technologies which stand for full band spectrum the Safari simultaneously transmits, receives and analyses a full band of 28 frequencies. In human terms, this means that it combines multiple frequencies for the best metal detection output.

This provides the Minelab Safari with even more information about a target and the surrounding environment than is possible with other single frequency or BBS metal detectors.

The Minelab Safari allows us to adjust sensitivity, threshold, target volume, discrimination and much more giving us a more accurate hunt according to our terrain.

You can create custom modes and save them also which is really handy.

There are the standard preset modes which are already set up for different items also.

Pinpoint with audio and visual indicators for a more accurate detecting experience press the pinpoint button and the Safari will zone-in on the precise location of that precious target, allowing you to spend less time at each hole, and increasing your find rate throughout the day.

Around the world there have been so many amazing reviews for the Safari, it’s hard to pick out what aspect of the machine people are most happy with.

Another important factor is that this model has many many reviews from buyers all over the web, which is another good factor when it comes to the Minelab Safari metal detector.

I have to say the power of this machine and depth capabilities for the price is astounding.

Pros and Cons of the Minelab Safari

• Amazing depth capability, reports of up to around 14″
• A very accurate machine with good to trash ratios
• Simple enough for beginners, good enough for pro’s
• Lightweight and robust, allowing a very comfortable day of detecting.
• Not fully waterproof although Minelab mentions it being OK in light rain.
• Eats batteries (rechargeable are a must have unless you want to remortgage your house)

Final Verdict

For the price this machine truly can’t be beaten in my opinion, the power and accuracy are equally as good as machines twice its price.

I wish they would have made it fully waterproof, they do state it’s OK in light rain but it’s not something you should really risk.

I feel like the Safari is one of the best machines on the market, just looking at reviews from around the internet and speaking to people who have used and still use the machine, there is so much praise and recommendation for the Minelab Safari.

The Safari is without a doubt the most powerful detector I have ever owned. Mine detected a chamber pot at 22″.Another item to add to the “Pro” list is that Andy Sabisch wrote an excellent book on operating the Safari (The Minelab Quattro & Safari Handbook).This book should be required reading for all Safari and Quattro owners. My only complaint about the Safari is that it doesn’t have a backlight for low light conditions. Most of the area’s I hunt are trashy so I use either a 5×10 Joey coil or a 5″ round DD coil. Using the Joey I haven’t noticed any loss of depth over the standard 8×11 coil. The 5″DD is the best choice for extremely trashy area’s without too much loss of depth. I have owned many detectors over the years and the Safari is by far my favorite one.Kudo’s Minelab!

I’m all for a critical and analytical thinking, so if you had any problems with this model please share with us. I want to offer a real review and that’s why I’m always looking to collect as much user input as well and to read other reviews.

I can’t see were the lightweight bit comes in I am 70 I’ve had to spend 100od quid for a harness .I’ve tried all different settings what ever I do i can’t make head nor tale of the orchestra it’s playing ,I bought this when I was working now i can’t afford to change it I am stuck with it it’s no pleasure I assure you

Try it out, see if you can adjust it to mine for some silver coins. It’s not going to be easy to find some silver coins, but for sure if you have some settings that others are using you will greatly improve your success rate!

Sorry Dave , instead of bleating about the machine , go out and learn what it’s telling you. Found multiple coins including 2 silver on first outing with it in coin mode , no alterations to the factory settings. Excellent depth , 12 inch with no problems using the stock coil. On the beach this detector excels with fishing weights dug from 18 inch deep. True, it plays tunes better than a flute but if you listen to what its telling you…….. happy days.

I have been using a Safari for beach and farm land for the past 10 months, its my 1st metal detector. I have had £1 coins & pre-decimal pennies down to 14″ on the beach. True is does produce a wide range of tones but these along with the target ID numbers help you to decide which targets to dig. I personally hunt with “Conductive Tones” and in this mode low conductivity targets like thin hammered coins give a low tone & highly conductive targets like iron will give you a very high tone. It will give you false signals on deep iron if you swing too fast but slow your swing, pass the coil over the target from different angles & if the target ID is all over the place – walk on. Slow & low is the motto with FBS machines as they need time to process the data from multiple frequencies. Andy Sabisch’s book is a MUST read & Gordon Heritage’s video explains “Cross saving” programs, a very useful Safari function. Good luck & happy hunting.

I ask how old it is because my friend bought one a few years back, but now I’m seeing current reviews on this machine?

Hi Paul, Safari pro model was released by the end of 2017 and you may see newer reviews because how well this model performs into multiple terrains with different settings.

I have a Safari and really like this detector. I bought this second hand and it is in good shape. I would however like to learn just when mine was manufactured. Can the serial number tell you what year your Minelab was manufactured? I have heard rumors that Minela b was going to stop production of the Safari. If this were true, depending on the age of my Safari, I’d consider buying a new one.

I want a detector for all around use, have heard the minelab brand is good and was considering an exterra 705 or possibly a safari or explorer. Minelab does not rate the safari or explorer for prospecting and I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with these detectors and gold prospecting. I like the idea of the multi frequency technology for all around use but was wondering if it is not usable for prospecting. Bought a minelab XTerra 705. It was between that and the Whites MXT. After some research and a little hands on I decided it fit my needs best. At this point in time anyway. I would be curious to know why the broad band detectors from minelab are not rated for prospecting. Is it the multi frequencies that do it or is it programing. Maybe I'll find out some day. Thanks for the reply.
