How to download YouTube videos on a Mac

If the idea of a long car journey or bedtime without a connection to the internet leaves you trembling with fear, there’s a solution. You can download those YouTube videos your kids (or you) love to watch to play back offline. Making a copy of YouTube videos on an iPad or iPhone is really easy, but the same can’t be said if you want to save YouTube videos on your Mac.

The most curious thing about this particular issue is that YouTube allows YouTube videos to be downloaded to an iPad or iPhone (if you subscribe to YouTube Premium , $11.99/£11.99 a month, one-month free trial). The same is true of Disney, Netflix and Prime , who also allow downloads to mobile devices, but not the Mac. For some reason these services do not seem to want people to download anything to a Mac, perhaps this is because they offer apps for mobile devices and therefore have control over how those recordings are stored and how long they are available for (YouTube Premium only lets subscribers download video and music on to mobile devices, and it will only be available to watch offline for 30 days, for example).

Since there are no apps for YouTube or the other streaming services on the Mac, the content owners won’t have control over how the recordings are used. Obviously the solution would be for Mac versions of the apps to be offered, but as yet this hasn’t happened.

However, just because YouTube doesn’t make it easy to download YouTube videos on a Mac doesn’t mean you can’t. Apple makes it possible to screen capture what is playing on your Mac, so ripping a YouTube video with the audio on to your Mac is not too much of a challenge. We’ll run though this process below.

There are also free and paid for apps that will also do this for you with a little more finesse, and we will include some of these options below too. In our experience the free apps are usually more trouble than they are worth and potentially dangerous. (If you see a warning that you need to install Flash, for example, it really could be a scam, or at worse malware!)

Before we start, we have to point out that you should be aware of copyright issues. Firstly, you shouldn’t download someone else’s video and then, for example, upload it to your own YouTube channel or use it to promote your business. You should also note that downloading YouTube videos goes against YouTube’s terms of service. The company specifies that “You shall not download any Content unless you see a ‘download’ or similar link displayed by YouTube.”

How to download YouTube videos on a Mac for free

It is really easy to download YouTube video for free with software that comes with your Mac. You don’t need to download an app at all. Since Mojave, macOS has had an in-built screen recording feature. You can capture what is playing on your screen and the audio. Just note that Mac mini doesn’t have an inbuilt microphone so you would need a microphone to capture audio if you are using a Mac mini.

Option 1: Screen capture with audio on a Mac

• Press Command + Shift + 5.
• Click on Record selected portion.

• Click Options and make sure your microphone is selected.
• Click Record.
• Now start playing the video.
• Wait for it to finish and then stop the video. To stop the screen recording (you’ll find a stop button in the menu at the top of the screen or in the box as seen in the image below.)

This is without a doubt the best way to record from YouTube on a Mac. However, a short video can take up a lot of space on your Mac, and obviously it is necessary to wait while the whole video plays through.

Option 2: Record the screen using QuickTime

Before Apple merged the tools for screen recording with the screen grab tools in macOS Mojave, Mac users could use QuickTime to record the screen on their Mac. Since Monterey, if you try to screen capture using QuickTime it just defaults to the same tools as are offered by Command + Shift + 5, however, if you have an older version of macOS this is how it works:

• Open QuickTime Player (press Command + Space and start typing QuickTime).
• Go to the menu at the top of the screen and choose File > New Screen Recording.

• Click on the red button.

• Now click on Record.
• Start the YouTube video playing (make sure the sound is on).
• Once the YouTube video has played you can click on the stop button in the menu at the top of the screen.
• The video will open so you can check it before saving it.

Best apps to download YouTube video

There are also some solutions on offer that will download the YouTube video for you, rather than you have to record the screen of your Mac while playing the video. This might be a preferred option if you don’t have the time to sit and wait for an hour of Peppa Pig to play. It should also result in much smaller file sizes.

Downie from developer Charlie Monroe costs $20 and can be used to download and save video from thousands of websites.

When you start up the app you can make various tweaks, to, for example, always download best quality, force MP4 format, and perform post-processing. Downie is available as a browser extension for Firefox, Safari and Chrome, but you can just drag and drop a link from a browser onto Downie in the Dock or it’s download window, and download the video. You can even choose the relevant subtitles.

The download of a 30 minute view took seconds and the resulting video looked excellent quality and only took 77MB space on our Mac.

EaseUS Video Downloader

EaseUS’s video downloaded is simple to use. Once the app is installed you can view content on a number of popular video hosting sites, including YouTube, and we were able to download videos (although we did find a few we couldn’t download).

There were four download options that indicated what the file size would be. It is also possible to just download audio as an MP3.

The software indicated how long the download would take and counted down the seconds remaining. We could hear the video playing in the background, but couldn’t see it. Once downloaded the video was saved to our Documents folder where we could play it.

Parallels ToolBox

On the basis that going with a well-known company means you are more likely not to end up with at best bad software, at worse malware on your Mac, we’ll look at Parallels ToolBox.

Parallels (the people behind the software that makes it easy to run Windows on your Mac ) have come up with a number of tools that can be used to simplify a number of tasks on your Mac. ToolBox is the result of their experience manning a help desk for their customers running Parallels on a Mac. So many customers phoned up asking how to do various things that Parallels thought some easy to use tools might be a good solution. And so Parallels Toolbox was born.

• Once you have download and installed Parallels Toolbox you’ll see a toolbox icon in the menu at the top of your screen. Click on that.
• You’ll see a number of tools including Airplane Mode, Free Memory, Do Not Disturb, Make Gif, and Download Video. Click on Download Video.
• Toolbox will instruct you that you need to enable a Safari extension in order to download video. Click Enable.

• Once the download has finished you will find the video file in your Downloads folder (which might not be immediately obvious).

The file will be saved as an MPEG-4 movie. It will open and play in QuickTime on your Mac.

If you are looking for an easy way to get the video onto an iPad or iPhone one solution would be to copy the video onto iCloud so you can access it from the Files app. You can then download it from there and play it whenever you want. iTubeDownloader charges a fee – it’s $8.99 for the activation code, and students can get 35% off – but there’s a free trial that may be sufficient for your needs.

It looks like a browser, but it automatically directs you to YouTube’s home page. You then browse the site as normal, except that there’s now a big Download button next to the URL bar. Tap this at any point to grab the video you’re currently viewing (or the video whose URL you’ve pasted into the address bar).

We found it easy to use iTubeDownloader when we first tried it our in 2019, and the resultant download was of a good quality. Unfortunately when we tried it out again in 2022 we were unable to download anything. A list of reasons were given.

When it does work, you get a choice of download quality settings. The only downside, really, is that it isn’t free beyond the terms of the trial.

Whether you’re stocking up on videos for a long trip without Wi-Fi or hoping to download tutorials or essays for work or personal projects, knowing how to download YouTube videos onto your Macbook is a useful skill. Rather than having to constantly rely on an internet connection while you’re on the go, you can simply plop down wherever you are, boot up your Macbook, and start watching.

Often when I’m in for a long-haul flight or commute, I panic-download as many videos as possible because as much as I would like it, there’s no guaranteed Internet connection out there. Now, YouTube does have a feature that will allow you to download videos straight onto your iPad or iPhone - but you'll need to be subscribed to YouTube Premium, and the same can be said about other streaming services like Disney, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

1. How to control settings when sharing music

It's quite easy to download your videos on a Mac since each device has internal screen recording software. So, no extra downloading or purchasing is required!

Ever since Mojave - remember that? - macOS has a built-in screen recording feature, which makes this all much easier.

Load up your YouTube video of choice on your Mac. Make sure the video quality is set to your desired resolution and that it’s full screen. As you can see in the image above, I've kept mine out of full-screen mode so you can see the options that pop up below once you input the commands.

Press Command + Shift + 5, press the record entire screen button, and then press the play button or space bar to start playing the video.

Your screen and therefore your Youtube video is now recording to be saved later! Once you’ve recorded what you want, hit the stop button at the top of the screen and your recording will stop. 

There you have it! 

If you'd rather have an app do the downloading for you, there are always apps out there that will get the job done. Often they do require a subscription or one-time purchase, as most free YouTube video downloaders aren't of very high quality, carry the risk of viruses, or splash watermarks on everything. Apps like EaseUS Video Downloader or Downie offer 14-day free trials and relatively cheap price plans, if you do want to try it out.

How to download videos from Safari on iPhone and iPad

Contrary to popular belief, it’s easy to download videos on iPhone and iPad using Safari. In this tutorial, we will show you how to save video files locally to your iPhone Camera Roll and the Files app for offline viewing.

What videos can you download on iPhone?

In almost all chat apps like Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc., you can download the videos people send you and view them inside that messaging app or export them to your iPhone’s Photos app.

Social apps

Most social media apps like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook don’t allow easy saving of video clips to the Camera Roll. However, some free video downloader apps from the App Store, iOS shortcuts, and third-party websites let you save videos from these social platforms to your iPhone. Have a look:

The YouTube app has a video downloader option, and the only legal way to download YouTube videos is by tapping the download button inside the official app. The saved video stays sandboxed in the YouTube app from where you can watch it without an internet connection, but you can’t transfer it to the iPhone Camera Roll.

In about 125 countries and regions like India, Israel, Egypt, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, and Vietnam, you can download most YouTube videos in the app for offline viewing – no YouTube Premium is required.

However, in countries like the USA, the UK, Australia, France, Italy, and more, you must have a Premium subscription to download YouTube videos .

You can browse websites using Apple’s Safari and search for the video you want to download. Some sites may offer an easy way to download the video, while others may have no such option, and when you tap the video, it starts playing in Safari with no visible button to save the video file. But worry not, as we will show you how to address this. These tips won’t work for all websites but should cover most of them.

How to download videos on iPhone and iPad

1) Open Safari and find the video on the concerned website. For this tutorial, I’m using Pixabay , which is a library of royalty-free stock footage.

2) Once you’re on the video page, tap the download button or link . If you don’t see a download button, jump to the next section .

3) After you tap the video download icon on a website in Safari, you should see an iOS pop-up menu with two options – View and Download . Tap Download , and it will save the file. You’ll notice that the Safari address bar now has a tiny arrow icon with a circular blue progress bar signifying the download status.

4) Tap Safari’s  arrow icon and pick Downloads  to get to the download manager, which lists the downloaded files. These files are saved in a folder inside the Files app .

But you can easily add them to your iPhone’s Camera Roll using one of these two ways:

Save video: Tap the video file > share button > Save Video.

Drag & drop: Tap and hold the video file, and its tile will slightly lift. Drag it a bit from its original position to detach it, but don’t lift your finger yet. Now, swipe up (or press the Home button) using your other hand to get to your iPhone Home Screen. From here, open the Photos app and make sure you’re inside Recents or an album. Finally, drop the video file by lifting your finger. You’ll see that the video is now added to the Photos app.

Another method to save a video file using Safari on iOS

As mentioned earlier, not all websites offer a download button. But for a video, you will see a play button, and tapping it starts playing the video inside Safari. So, if you find yourself on such a website, play the video and then follow these steps:

1) On the Safari video player, tap the Picture in Picture button , which will detach the video and put it inside a small floating window. It won’t work if you tap the Picture in Picture button directly on the web page video player, like that on Vimeo.

2) Tap the share button from the video player screen.

3) Pick Save to Files > select iCloud or On My iPhone > Save .

Don’t see the share button in step 2?

In the left screenshot, you see a video playing/streaming on a web page. And in the right image, you see a video file starting to play inside the default Safari media player.

If a video is embedded on the website, it generally plays on that same web page (left image above) and doesn’t launch the video player inside Safari. If this is the case, you won’t be able to download the video unless you look for third-party sites that can save such videos. For example, tapping a video on Twitter starts playing it in the browser and you can’t download it directly from Safari, but you can use a site like Twitter Video Downloader in Safari , which will grab the Twitter video, play it in Safari video player (right image above) and let you save the file.

On some sites, tapping the triangle play button over the video may start playing it on the webpage, making it impossible to download. Hopefully, you can address this by looking for a View , Download , or Play button, which loads the actual video file and starts playing it inside the Safari video player. Once the file is in the Safari video player, enter Picture in Picture, and tap the share button > Save to Files.

Find downloaded files on an iPhone or iPad

You will find the downloaded video in the following places:

Inside Safari: Tap the downloads button in the URL bar, hit Downloads , and you’ll see the video file.

In the Camera Roll: Open the Photos app and tap Recents from the Albums tab.

In the Files app: Open the Files app and tap Recents to see the video. You can also tap Browse and look for the video in the downloads folder. From the Files app, tap & hold a video thumbnail and then choose Share > Save Video to add it to the Photos app.

This is how you can download video files on your iOS or iPadOS device. Not all websites allow video downloads. But in many situations, you can use the above methods to save it locally and watch it offline without a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

To add a further wrinkle to proceedings, you're going to need to use Google Chrome, too. The download feature is only available via Chrome, so Safari users are out of luck. Thankfully, Chrome is one of the best Mac web browsers around — maybe give it a try for all your other stuff, too.

That’s because Apple eventually tends to ban apps from the App Store that allow direct downloading of a YouTube video. Though you can use a video downloader to download videos on a computer and then transfer them to your iOS device. However, that isn’t as seamless as directly saving a certain video to your iPhone or iPad.

Thankfully, Safari on iOS 13 and iPadOS packs a download manager that makes downloading files a piece of cake. Yes, you can now directly download media files such as videos and MP3 using the built-in Safari app. The same, however, isn’t possible on Chrome for iPhone.

Without further ado, let see how you can download YouTube videos to your iPhone camera roll on iOS 15 ,  iOS 14, or iOS 13.

Requirement : iPhone or iPad running iOS 13 or later

Download YouTube videos using Safari in iOS 15

• Go to Safari and visit an online video downloader site like  odownloader.com .

Note : The files downloaded using Safari are saved in the iCloud Drive by default and can be accessed through the Files app . You can change the save location to the internal storage of your iPhone though.

How to change download location in Safari

• Go to Settings and tap Safari.

To view the saved YouTube videos , open the Files app and navigate to Browse > On My iPhone > Downloads. Here you can play the MP4 videos right away and can even rotate or trim them.

Save downloaded video to Photos app

If you wish to watch the video directly from the Photos app instead of the Files app then that’s possible too.

To do so , open the video in the Files app and tap the “Share” button at the bottom left. Then tap “Save Video” and the particular video will then be visible in Photos under Albums > Videos. Moreover, you can take advantage of new editing tools in iOS 13 after saving a video to Photos.

TIP : Delete the video file from Files after moving it to Photos to prevent it from occupying double storage on your iPhone.

1. Open the Files app on your iPhone or iPad. 

2. Head to the Browse tab and tap the iCloud Drive option.

Download Videos from Social Media Apps and Websites 

Downloading videos from social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, etc., might not be ethical or even legal. Especially, if you want to download and share these videos or use the content in your videos, etc.

Coming to YouTube, it allows users to download videos for offline viewing within the app. These videos will not appear in the Photos or Files app and can only be accessed on YouTube.
