Purpose-built for setting skin tracks and hunting backcountry lines, the Dynastar M-Tour 86 brings a fun, playful feel for ski tours long and short. A lightweight paulownia wood core combines with sidewalls underfoot for a light and confident feel through mixed backcountry conditions.

Technologies

PAULOWNIA WOOD CORE Core with a density of 300 g/m3, reducing the ski's weight by an average of 15 to 20% in comparison to a poplar core. Offering similar mechanical properties, it is an essential choice for Touring/Free Touring.

CENTRAL SIDEWALL CONSTRUCTION Sandwich construction in the middle of the ski, the sidewalls under the foot of the skier bring performance and precision.

TIP ROCKER Rocker moderate tip only. It facilitates the flat pivot while combining softness and tolerance in the curves. The rocker is moderated so that as soon as the ski is on the edge, the ski works in curve on the whole length of contact of the edges.

FIBERGLASS TORSION BOX The fiberglass torsion box is a technology used on M-Line Range. The wood part of the hybrid Core is surrounded by a Fiberglass. It brings vertical reinforcement enhancing the comfort of the skiers and the on-snow feeling.

Atomic Backland Series: Review and Comparison

  February 15, 2022

By   Marius Bulota

Atomic Backland Series Overview

The Atomic Backland is a lightweight backcountry (touring) series of skis. There are a few sub-categories ranging from super lightweight skimo to super float 117mm underfoot, and a full progression of underfoot width options. Overall, there are 16 models of Atomic Backland that are offered in various lengths .

The first thing I noticed when we measured the Atomic Backland is how light weight they are. Just picking up the skis from the shelf is astonishing. In this series,  Atomic uses constructions that produces very light skis that still offer interesting stiffness levels. Accordingly, the surface - to - weight ratio , which we like to use to describe backcountry skis is one of the highest we have measured so far!  This means that no matter what model or length you choose, they will have an extremely low weight for skis of similar  surface area.

Atomic presents four sub-categories, namely the Unisex (or men), the Women specific, and two very lightweight options under the SL and UL . Our measurements also show that the line-up of Unisex and Women can be broken down into two different orientations based on their shapes. The shift happens around the Backland 100. Anything below a waist width of 100 mm has it's shape adapted to firm snow skiing, while anything above 100 mm is adapted for powde r skiing with features like increased rocker.

The surface-to-weight ratios  across the model we measured are very consistent at about 1,3 cm²/g in the 180cm lengths, except for the Backland 100 that has an impressive surface-to-weight ratio of 1,44 cm²/g . This means that even if the Backland 100 is larger and has more surface area compared to the Backland 95, but is also lighter! It is a bit of an outlier in this series, so be aware that they will provide different on-snow feels.

As for many light skis, their bending and torsional stiffness levels are lower than other similarly shaped skis. However, we found that for their surface-to-weight ratio, the bending stiffness levels are typically medium-high and the torsional stiffness levels are typically high.

Looking at the Women specific skis, our measurements of the Backland 100 and the Backland 98 W in 164cm show that that are both practically identical for every aspec t we consider (see detailed comparison here ) .  They have the same shapes, same weight, same bending stiffness and same torsional stiffness.

What are the Atomic Backland options available?

According to Atomic catalog, there are 16 models of Backland skis in 21/22 and those come in different lengths. At the time of writing, we had 35 Backland skis measured and available for you to compare in our online  Ski Comparator . Of those, 15 are from season 21/22. The table below summarizes the options available in 21/22 catalog.

Comparing The Atomic Backland Popular Options

Our comment and observations below are based on the 35 Backland skis we have measured. We picked four models of interest (Backland 86 SL, Backland 95, Backland 100 and Backland 107) and compared them for similar lengths. We use lengths around 180 cm in this case. This is important as many properties change with ski length. Our detailed measurement are available here .  You can use our database to compare other lengths and models.

Backland 86  SL

dynastar m tour 86 review

The Atomic Backland 86 SL is not a skimo, but at 1300 grams, it can definitely be considered Super Light! The rockers and tapers are shorter, which will provide more support and stability on hard surface. It also provides more bending stiffness, which is interesting for skiing faster on harder snow.

If you want a ski mainly for touring and would use it very occasionally on the resort, this might be an interesting option. However, the other way around may not be the best option. There are better resort oriented options that would also do well occasionally backcountry skiing.

Backland 95

dynastar m tour 86 review

Like the 86 SL, the Backland 95 also has a subtle rockers and a long sidecut length, for more stability on hard surfaces. With 95 mm waist, it can float but is also narrow enough to handle harder surface. The radius is slightly shorter, so more reactive. It would be the right choice for the skiers who would prefer a one-ski quiver for up-hilling, and go touring no matter the snow conditions (crust, hard packed, powder...).

Be aware that even if it's close to the Backland 100 in waist width, it is a different beast.

Backland 100

dynastar m tour 86 review

The Backland 100 is considerably different when compared to the Backland 95, despite only a 5 mm waist width increase. Its design show many powder oriented features like longer rockers and tapers. This makes this skis more playful and easier to pivot in soft snow and uneven terrain (soft bumps). It would not perform has well on hard surfaces. The choice between the 95 and the 100 really depends on the main conditions you anticipate to ski the most. If you go touring no matter the the snow condition, the 95 would be better. If you go touring when the snow is soft and deep, the 100 is a better option.

Backland 107

dynastar m tour 86 review

The Backland 107  is clearly powder oriented with a bit more of a freeride flavour. It has the highest rockers and tapers. It is also 300 grams heavier than the 100. With this extra weight also comes about 20% more torsional stiffness, which would be useful for charging even when the snow is not super fluffy. This options may be more interesting for skiers that want more float and more responsiveness, due to the extra torsional stiffness.

The Atomic Backland evolution in time

Comparing the backland 100 and 102 from 2019 to 2022.

Yes, there has been a few changes over the years. See our detailed comparison between the 19/20 Backland 102 and the 20/21 and 21/22 Backland 100, in 172 cm. The main differences observed are:

  • The weight was significantly reduced over the years, by as much as 12% to 14% per year ! This is quite an engineering achievement, considering that during this same period, the bending stiffness level increased a bit and the torsional stiffness increased significantly !
  • Accordingly, the surface-to-weight ratio went from 1,17cm²/g in 19/20, to 1,3cm²/g in 20/21 and now 1,49cm²/g in 21/22 for those specific skis.
  • The radius stays between 17m to 18m for this specific length.
  • The running length is about the same for all three skis.
  • The tail height has decreased significantly from the 19/20 version.

COMPARE ALPINE SKIS

What skis are similar to the backland series.

There are similar options to the Atomic Backland series. However, you will notice from the comparisons below that similar waist width along with similar surface to weight does not mean that they will ski the same. Lets have a look at a few models form other brands such as DPS, Blizzard, Dynafit, Dynastar, Fischer, K2, Line, Rossignol and Völkl. The table below is a comparisons summary we have made.

Atomic Backland review conclusions

The Atomic Backland has some impressive specifications as a backcountry (touring) ski. It clearly scores well on the surface to weight ratio, no matter which size. Up to a waist width of 95, it is targeted for firm snow. Above that, the shape is different and clearly targets more playful feelings in soft snow. There are no significant differences between the Women and the Unisex models. There are many other light skis out there, but the Backland remains a light ski with above average levels of bending and torsional stiffness. Over the past years, while the weight has been decreasing, Atomic maintained or increased the stiffness levels.

Dynastar Vertical 88: A Ski Review

Dynastar Vertical 88 terrain.

High mountain terrain trending towards steep dropping into the void: great Dynastar Vertical 88 territory. At ~1150g (172cm), it’s a ski you’ll appreciate when it’s strapped to your back or locked on your feet.

Set your sites and the scales on a svelte number, 88mm and 1150g to be precise: The Dynastar Vertical 88 delivers a lightweight ski with notable dampness. IFMGA guide Rob Coppolillo reviews the Vertical 88 and helps us discern where and when it’s best suited.

“The correct number of bikes is always n+1”

Have you seen this meme?

Or, maybe you’ve seen a sub-variant of it for … mountain boots, skis, golf clubs, you name it. Yes, your life partner thinks you’re a lunatic because you have a ski for every snow type, every type of terrain, different days of the week, and barometric pressures.

Me? No, no, of course not. I’m a mountain guide, so I actually need all the boots, skis, ropes, carabiners, etc., in my garage. Add to that my lucrative, prolific career as a writer, and, well, I think you understand now: I can justify any acquisition of any product at any time.

A set of skis specifically for no-fall terrain? Shorter, narrower boards for maneuvering in tight couloirs and “dry skiing.” But of course, my friends, I mean, I am a professional.

Dynastar Vertical 88

The Vertical 88s scream stable ski mountaineering tool with its flat tail and modest tip rocker.

Weight: ~1150g (172cm) Construction: Sidewall Sandwich Construction (full sidewall) Core: Hybrid Paulownia/PU core, Basalt Fiber Dimensions (mm): 110 / 88 / 120 (172cm) Lengths (cm): 156, 164, 172, 180 Radius (m): 20 (172cm) Price: $699.00

For 2022/2023, Dynastar has renamed the Vertical 88 to the M-Vertical 88 F-Team , and has renamed the M-Tour 99 to the M-Tour 99 F-Team Open . Beyond the new and more verbose naming conventions and new topsheets, the skis remain identical.

The Dynastar Vertical 88

The legendary brand Dynastar makes boards in all shapes and sizes, from skinny alpine racing skis to fat-daddy freeride planks. Based in Sallanches, France, just down the hill from Chamonix, Dynastar has established itself as a blue-chip crafter of skis over its 60-year history.

Though not as ubiquitous as Atomic or Blizzard here in the States, Dynastar has of late produced some cult skis that garner rave reviews. The M-Tour 99 won Skialper’s “Ski of the Year” a couple of seasons ago, and its “Vertical” line-up is a fixture on everything from Haute Routes to opening descents throughout Europe.

The Vertical 88 gets even more hype, as French mountain guide and adventure skier, Vivien Bruchez, has been instrumental in its design. As I type this, he’s trying to get to base camp at Dhaulagiri (8167m) with at least one pair of 156cm Verticals in his quiver.

Given the popularity of the ski and its pedigree, I was curious. Over the course of the past season, I had the opportunity to ski some Vertical 88s (they also make an 82mm-waisted version) on everything from warming slush in the high Arctic to steep couloirs in the Cascades to groomed piste with the kid.

Short ski burlier binding.

I acquired the Vertical not as a daily driver, but as a maneuverable steep-ski. I selected the 172cm (available sizes 156cm, 164cm, 172cm, and 180cm) length, and had the mad geniuses at Cripple Creek here in Seattle mount an ATK “R12” binding.

Short Ski, Burlier Binding

Dynastar doesn’t call the Vertical 88 a “steep ski,” though their collaboration with Bruchez undeniably positions it in the realm of peak bagging, couloir hunting, and ski alpinism.

Dynastar, rather, labels the Vertical “balanced,” effective for both ascent and descent. Whatever the copywriting says, the Vertical has earned a rep for being quick and capable on steep slopes and confined couloirs, if not a reliable touring ski in the tradition of lighter, narrower, “Euro” skis. After having ridden it for a season, in just about every condition except deep pow, I’d say it’s all true – it’s a versatile, lightweight ski, indeed more on the “Euro” end of the spectrum and a capable tool on steep slopes.

I acquired the Vertical not as a daily driver, but as a maneuverable steep-ski. I selected the 172cm (available sizes 156cm, 164cm, 172cm, and 180cm) length, and had the mad geniuses at Cripple Creek here in Seattle mount an ATK “R12” binding .

Unless you have an hour or two for deciphering the endless options on the ATK website, I’ll give you the punchline: the R12 binding is a slightly heavier (335g/binding vs. their “ Haute Route 10 ” which weighs 200g/binding, for example, per the ATK website), burlier “free touring” binding (the integrated brake accounts for some of that weight). It features a wider bolt pattern in the adjustable (25mm) heel piece, which is nice because, in theory, wider bolts resist pulling out better than a fixed-position heel piece, whose bolts are closer together.

The R12’s heel piece relies not on an aluminum mounting plate, as the lighter ATK bindings (including the Black Diamond-branded “Helio” tech bindings ) do, but rather an integrated 7075 aluminum and stainless-steel unit. Instead of attaching the binding to the ski via four relatively small bolts using a Torx 20 bolt, the R12 has four large screws a few centimeters apart – good for peace of mind when coaxing oneself into no-fall terrain.

In summary, I chose a shorter Vertical 88 than I might normally, for its maneuverability and weight savings, with a burlier binding. (For an all-around touring ski, I’d probably go with the 180cm length; I’m 5’11”, 170lbs.)

For comparison, the Dynastar M-Tour 99 specs:

Weight: ~1250g (170cm) Construction: Sidewall Sandwich Construction (full sidewall) Core: Hybrid Paulownia/PU core, Basalt Fiber Dimensions (mm): 117/99/127 Lengths (cm): 162, 170, 178, 186 Radius (m): 20 (172cm) Price: $819.99

On the left, the M-Tour 99, just a wee bit more girth and heft. On the right, the Vertical 99.

Vertical 99 V M-Tour 99

Tip comparison of the Vertical 88 (left) and the M-Tour 99 (right). The Vertical 88 sports a notched tip for those looking for speedy transitions.

The Vertical 88 Niche

I also own the Dynastar M-Tour 99 (in a 178cm), which is a marvelous quiver-of-one, with a wider shovel (dimensions: 127mm, 99mm, 117mm; 20m turn radius in the 178cm), more versatile shape, and both tip and tail “rocker” – though I’d call it more “early rise” than rockered. The M-Tour is the progeny of the immensely popular “Mythic” skis Dynastar produced over the last decade. The ski, I’d argue, makes a great daily driver in Colorado, here in the Cascades, or even Canada. Its only shortcomings might be very deep days or tighter spaces. Call it the older, more relaxed brother of the Vertical.

The Vertical 88 features a similar sidecut (120mm, 88mm, 110mm; 20m radius in the 172cm), but the ski has a flat tail and more camber. The resulting “feel” is of a straighter ski, with more edge hold, requiring more traditional technique. The Vertical’s relatively even flex and light weight (1514g/ski with the R12 binding, home verified; 1150g/ski flat per the Dynastar website) demands a centered, balanced stance while skiing it. Drive it too hard, especially with a heavier pack, and you’ll fold the tip.

The M-Tour 99 tolerates a slightly more relaxed technique and is more forgiving overall. The Vertical , especially in a shorter version, requires attention not to get sloppy.

Vertical 88 flatfish tail.

This here folks, on the Dynstar Vertical 88, is a flat tail, relatively speaking. Great for building anchors (My day job: ski guide) and for edge hold in firm/steep terrain.

Sidewalls, Construction, and Comparisons

Dynastar partners with Bruchez and the Chamonix guiding bureau, the Compagnie des Guides; this gives them plenty of expert input. The Vertical 88 feels like a ski designed by Euros. Light, with a skimo tip attachment (a cut notch in the shovel), and a flat tail, it might, at first, remind you of a Ski Trab or Movement plank.

Where the Vertical seems to get ahead, though, is in its full sidewall construction, built around a basalt-reinforced, paulownia core. You probably know paulownia, as many brands use it to lighten up their skis. Dynastar adds basalt to dampen the ride, while providing some resistance/strength. An even flex (on my subjective scale, I’d call it a 6/10) across the length of the ski, vertical sidewalls, and the core combination all make for a stable, predictable, damp ski, belying its 1150g weight.

If we’re comparing, I’d call it a tad more damp, slightly less twitchy, and a bit softer than the original Blizzard Zero G 85 and a touch more stable than the K2 Wayback 80 (which I’ve only skied for a couple of runs; grain of salt required here).

The Vertical will do just about anything you tell it to, save for deep snow and charging long-radius turns, but it requires some discipline while skiing. Stay centered, don’t overdrive it. Stick to this plan of attack, and it’s a fun ski, linking short-to-medium turns, jump-turning in couloirs, etc.

A shorter ski makes for easy climbing on the up, no doubt. Plenty of skis fall into this 1100-ish gram category, and riding a 172cm ski makes the occasional kick-turn a relaxed affair.

Where the Vertical shines, though, is on the down. Lightweight skis often mean carbon, but the Vertical stays svelte without it. Basalt reportedly weighs 25% less than fiberglass, while offering equivalent strength. Add to this basalt’s reputed dampness, and this might be the Vertical’s selling point: reliable edge-hold, without the brittle, twitchy feel of a superlight ski. Is it the basalt? Well, who knows, but the Vertical is, above all else, predictable and reliable. Desirable traits if you’re steep skiing on them!

When considering the ski for broader use, I find myself wanting the 180cm version for more moderate terrain.

The 172cm version sure is nice, though, when side-slipping, stepping over rocks, or linking turns on steeper features. I climbed Mt. Hood with guests last spring, and we managed to ski the “Old Chute,” a fun descent that begins with a short, steep pitch (a couple sites say 50-degrees, but that seems a little optimistic) and then a consistent, open run for nearly a grand above an open, steaming crater. Don’t blow it here, people – if the fall doesn’t kill you, the gases and crater will!

I belayed the guests for the first pitch and then cautiously skied down to them – side-slipping the icy section, making a few turns, all while appreciating a predictable ski.

Outside its “home turf,” I had to ride the Vertical for a week straight on Svalbard, after a client broke his ski on day 1. I brought the Verticals as a backup, intending to ski the M-Tours . It was the first warm-up of the season in the high Arctic, so by week’s end, we were skiing boot-top slush in places. Less than ideal, but I survived on the Verticals and was surprised at its willingness to rally in manky conditions.

Vertical 88 early tip rise.

Part of the Vertical’s versatility comes from its strategic use and design of its early-rise tip. In variable snow (and slush, I guess), it does provide a bit of float and forgiveness – appreciated! Load the ski, though, and the early-rise disappears quickly, and you end up getting the whole edge of the ski in contact.

This results in a couple of positive traits – first, the Vertical doesn’t ski “short,” meaning you feel the whole length of the edge in contact with the slope. This characteristic means you’re truly centered on the ski rather than being centered on just the cambered section, as you often find yourself on a more aggressively rockered ski. Second, full edge contact delivers more security in steeper, firmer conditions.

Evaluating skis is always a bit of a guessing game – it’d be amazing to ski a Vertical without basalt in the core, just to compare. Or what about a slightly more aggressively rockered version? Sure, this would make comparisons more valid, but nobody has the time or money for these antics, and I’m left to semi-educated theories as to why I like or dislike the subtleties of a ski.

I think the strategic early-rise and the core construction of the Vertical set it apart as a lightweight ski that punches above its weight class in tricky terrain.

Dynastar offers a pre-cut skin for most of its touring collection, and you can find a handful of their skis at select retailers – check the Dynastar website for a list. I love these Verticals (and the M-Tour, too!) and would appreciate a go on some of their freeride skis. Dynastar, for example, produces another version of its 99-underfoot ski, the M Pro 99 , which is the same shape and dimensions as the M-Tour 99 , but has a poplar core, titanal plate under the center portion of the ski, as well as a polyurethane layer (presumably in place of the basalt in the touring skis).

The point being – my foray into the Dynastar line-up has left me wanting more, and I’m looking forward to some more adventures on the Vertical 88 . Put this ski on the list if you’re looking at the Blizzard Zero G 85 , the Atomic Backland 85 , or the K2 Wayback , to name a few of the popular options in this category.

Ski Test – Dynastar M Vertical Pro

dynastar m tour 86 review

Size tested : 178 cm

The Dynastar M-Vertical Pro is the typical backcountry product, not especially heavy or light, a ski you can do everything and go everywhere with, very easy to pivot. It has a very good tip-lift assisted by a rocker: the ski “slaps” a bit on hard snow, you lose a bit of edge length and grip at the front but it doesn’t really matter.

However, it isn’t exactly a classic ski because, due to its rocker, it pivots very fast. The flex is well studied. This is a carefree ski. In difficult snow you don’t notice you’re carrying a backpack. You can pass through difficult terrain easily. The Dynastar M-Vertical Pro does not necessarily give you a crazy wide smile, but it always responds like a Swiss army knife. It is present underfoot.

It enters easily into the curve, it skids very well flat, without any surprises. Also, you can put it on the edge, even if it doesn’t ride super clean and even, but with a little skill you’ll manage. It is better to enter midfoot and play with the tail than to attack directly with the tip. The latter is quite “weak”: as soon as you load it, the ski quite frankly just oversteers. Heavy-built skiers can distort it but you still have to force it.

Carving short turns are very difficult to do, which is lucky, because it’s not meant to! But all skidding turns that roll over onto the edge for grip are pretty good. It’s glide could be improved (copared to the Blizzard skis previously tested).

Its weight is correct (1200 g / 178 cm), we can clearly see the Dynastar M-Vertical Pro at the feet of a skier who is going for a nice slope, who wants grip and why not go for a steep one. A ski on. The heel is not tricky at all, in powder it leveled off fairly quickly, it did quite well in the crust, a rather lively ski underfoot. In complicated snow, you still have to keep an eye out for it because it is not very wide. It’s a real ski touring for going up and down the distance. Very interesting.

Quick overview

A versatile touring ski, the Dynastar M-Tour 86 can be light uphill and sharp, grippy and precise when it comes to diving down the slopes.

dynastar m tour 86 review

Rocker Camber Small Rise Skis with a rocker in the tip, camber in the middle and a small rise in the tail are very versatile. The ski is easy to turn, and the camber under the foot gives the ski grip on harder snow. The tail is slightly raised, but it is not like a full rocker. This makes for a balanced combination of easy turning and carving, without compromising on stability.

Woodcore The core consists of specifically selected wood types that are laminated in different compositions into a solid core. This gives the designers control over all the characteristics of the ski.

Hybrid Cap/Sandwich construction These skis with a hybrid construction have a combination of Sidewall underfoot and Cap construction in the tip and tail. This combination unites a good edge hold with a low rotational weight.

Responsiveness

The Dynastar M-Free 108 is one of the standout freeride skis of the year, beloved by skiers who treat their powder like a creamy schmear on a freshly toasted bagel. It’s responsive, forgiving, and most enjoyed by strong, aggressive skiers who like hauling down the fall line (I’ve had this ski in my quiver since the iteration Dynastar released in 2020. I travel with it often because it is versatile enough to handle the unknown). The M-Free 108 is a delightful choice if you can only have one ski. It stays on edge across the hardpack and floats plenty even at 108mm underfoot. Just check my Instagram from March 2021.

Learn more:  How wide is too wide for resort skis?

At the gear test in Sun Valley, and during additional testing in spring conditions around Salt Lake City, testers found the Dynastar M-Free 108 to be responsive, even in wetter, heavier snow. For that reason, it also scored high in Flotation and Versatility.  “If you’re willing to do the work, this could be a fun East Coast storm chaser,” said tester Luke Larsen, who owns The Lifthouse Ski Shop in Utah. “Otherwise, it will feel at home in soft or firm snow found out West. The Dynastar M-Free 108 is amazing through soft bumps and holds a great edge. With its tip rocker, it floats like a dream in the deepest snow you can find. It’s such an easy ski to pick up on. Instantly, I knew what this ski wanted to do.”

We noted the consistent flex makes for large radius turns, and many appreciated the predictability and controllable nature of this ski. It scored high marks from directional skiers who gravitate towards a ski that’s solid underfoot but still want to spin, flip, and get airborne from time to time.

The poplar wood core is shored up with a layer of Titanal under the mounting plate, providing added stability at speed and a trustworthy platform for hard-charging powder mania. Full sidewall construction, meaning full-length vertical edges from tip to tail, help maximize grip, balance, and power. You won’t waste any energy gained as you go in and out of the turn.

“If you want to love skiing more, this ski is for you,” summed up Larsen.

See how the Dynastar M-Free 108 stacks up to the rest in the powder ski category

You fly for hours, anticipating your arrival, wanting to take in the area and the views of another country far away from your departure airport. The airport and the area you leave from is detailed and visually full, and you know you have a great airport scenery waiting for you at the other end of the flight, then when you arrive...

...  Nothing, but flat plain emptiness and the same boring standard X-Plane basic scenery, worse there is no OSM (Open Street Map) data in the tile either, so there is no road or autogen detailing in there as well, just well nothing.

When Drzewiecki Design released their UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP , I loved it because it was like a visitor from the Cold War past, the Soviet era, and it was also great scenery and great choice of a destination to fly to from any of the capitals of Europe...  but that was it, just this great airport in the middle of nothingness, bland....   zero ville.

Moscow old.jpg

Now Drzewiecki Design has released "Moscow City"  a scenery package to compliment their UUEE Sheremetyevo, and boy how much a difference this release has done to this totally boring area.

To get the full first impression effect I flew JARDesign's A320neo from EFHK Vatnaa, Helsinki to UUEE Sheremetyevo which is flight Finnair AY153 which is a daily 9.25am service.

Moscow City_ Dep Vatnaa 1.jpg

First Impressions

I was surprised to start picking up scenery still quite away out from central Moscow, as I approached my 6000ft transition altitude. Here there was buildings and houses and the physical visual notes you were arriving somewhere.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 1.jpg

Looking hard at the horizon through the A320's windows and you could see the iconic silhouette of Moscow city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 5.jpg

The scenery provides lite versions of all Moscow's Airports, this is UUWW Vnukovo, which was easily recognisable as you flew over. As you fly closer to the centre of the city the density of the objects below becomes quite heavy as the landscape fills in. You have all kinds of infrastructure including, blocks of flats, tower blocks, factories, housing, skyscrapers and almost everything that makes up an urban landscape, in all there is 2000 custom-made buildings that makes up this impressive scenery.

A note here in that you don't get that rolling as you move feeling effect where as it just suddenly appears in front of you and then quickly disappears behind as soon as you have flown out over the area. There is a slight effect of that as there has to be, but only in the far distance and as you can see from the images the views in every direction are widespread and visually it is very good to excellent.

The "Seven Sisters" or "Stalinist skyscrapers" built from 1947 to 1953 are all in the scenery with their "Wedding Cake" architecture or officially  Russian Baroque               - Gothic style. Most famous is the Moscow State University, front and centre of the image below.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival LG 16.jpg

Central Moscow is excellent and extremely realistic, and you really need a travel guide to pick out the landmarks and detail, but it is hard to miss the Red Kremlin complex  and St Peter's square from the air.  Both sides of the aircraft is visually full until you have crossed right over the city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 7.jpg

I am not a fan of the generated 3d OSM scenery, but this is very good in blending in perfectly with the X-Plane default scenery and giving you a smooth transition from country to urban and back again with great realism.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 14.jpg

Over the city and turning north towards Sheremetyevo, another Moscow airport UUMU Chkalovsky is represented on the turn.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 17.jpg

The city skyline is now easily visible on landing at Sheremetyevo, and that really helps in the arrival factor, more so in that the cities building infrastructure spread now comes up and around the airport to fill the gaps to the city itself, and making the original  Sheremetyevo scenery that was so open and lonely in the old X-Plane view is now a big part of the whole in this combination. No doubt it really brings this always good scenery now alive and very usable.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 19.jpg

Sheremetyevo Airport

Before we move on to the city itself. It is important to note the area around UUEE Sheremetyevo itself.

Moscow Sheremetyevo 1.jpg

Compare the large image above to the earlier image at the start of this review to see the amount of change there is around UUEE Sheremetyevo with the addition of this Moscow City package. The two sceneries are of course meant to be used together, and in reality it would look odd if you had Moscow City scenery installed without the Sheremetyevo scenery included to fill out the northern areas. A highlight is that both sceneries together form a single whole, as the areas between the airport and the central city area are well filled in and that gives you a huge area of coverage and the full visual aspect.

To get a closer lower look at the Moscow Center I commandeered Dreamfoil's lovely Bell 407.

Moscow Buildings 1.jpg

There is a 4.000km² total area covered with this scenery here, and you have expect some sort of building replication to cover all that ground. There is of course but as well in the fact there is also enough variations as to not keep it all interesting and not obviously visually obvious.

Moscow Buildings 2.jpg

The closer you go to the central area, the variations in the buildings change there in style and density as well. And then more of the iconic buildings start to appear as you get closer in again to the middle. The business district is excellent, with a lot of business towers and the more modern futuristic skyscraper architecture that stands out in every view point in eye scans across the city.

Moscow Buildings 5.jpg

The more recent is in tune with the more older Stalinist era that makes up the Moscow skyline.

The Kremlin Complex and the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed (St Basil's) is excellently represented and so is "Red Square"

Moscow Buildings 10.jpg

There are Orthodox churches everywhere and all the big icons in the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium, Otkrytive Arena and department stores, museums and power stations and more....

I did have issues with many buildings floating, including the Kremlin. I tried both "Runways follow terrain contours" on and off with no flattening of the objects and there is no information in the manual either on how to fix the problem.

Night lighting is very good, yes there is again a repeatable pattern to the majority of the hundreds of the apartment blocks that does stand out, but the more individual buildings do all have that personal touch and some buildings look really very good.

Moscow Buildings Night 1.jpg

The highlight here is the business district which looks magnificent and is very realistic from any direction at night as is the lit Stadium.

Moscow Buildings Night 3.jpg

Although away from the central area the Ostankino Tower that stands 540.1 metres (1,772 ft) tall, and is the tallest freestanding structure in Europe and it looks great at night and is a very good position indicator from the air from any direction.

Included Moscow Airports

As noted also included in the scenery are seven airports and several helipads.

UUWW Vnukovo

Moscow UUWW Vnukovo 1.jpg

The futuristic Vnukovo International is very good for a lite version, with great terminals and lots of small detailing. Only thing missing is the static aircraft and a bit more ramp equipment, but otherwise it is highly usable.

UUDD Domodedovo

Moscow UUDD Domodedovo 1.jpg

The oldest of Moscow's International airports is Domodedovo. Again it is quite devoid of static aircraft and I am not crazy about the blue terminal glass work, but it is still a very workable scenery to use and has a lot of well made objects.

UUBW Zhukovsky

Moscow UUBW Zhukovsky 1.jpg

Zhukovsky was a major aircraft testing facility since the  cold war years, with most of the major Russian Experimental Design Bureau's having facilities here. It is also now used by the Ministry of Emergency Situations! and cargo carriers. It was also used as a test site for the Soviet Buran  reusable Spacecraft because it has the world's second longest pubic runway at at 5,402 m (17,723 ft). Mostly it is a collection of very large hangars but has a lot of static aircraft in storage.

UUMU Chkalovsky

Moscow UUMU Chkalovsky 1.jpg

Chkalovsky is a military logistics airport that is famous for it's support for the Russian Space program and transport to Star City and the Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center. Yuri Gagarin left here on his final flight before crashing by the town of Kirzhach.

UUBM Myachkovo Airport

Myachkovo is a small General Aviation Airport that is owned by the Finpromko company. Cargo aircraft up to the size of the Ilyushin ll-76 freighter can also use the airport.

UUMB Kubinka

Moscow UUMB Kubinka 1.jpg

Kubinka has been a significant Russian military airbase and large airshows are held here to show off the Russian military might.

There is also provided UUU1 Kremlin Airport, within the Kremlin walls, but I couldn't get it to work? There are two pads in H1 and H2.

Your first thoughts after reviewing this excellent Moscow scenery is not with this actual package. You then wish that you could have this extensive scenery at London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin and the list could go on with any of your favorite European Cities, and don't count a load in the Middle East and Asia. But a London scenery like this would certainly be a godsend in our X-Plane world. Drzewiecki Design has already done Warsaw and Manhattan, so there is always hope.

It is not cheap either and you need to add in their UUEE Sheremetyevo scenery package on top of that as well. But you get an awful lot of ground covered here for your money, with the area covered here that is extensive...  huge and flying into Moscow will never be the same again.

A few areas to note in one that in my case a few of the buildings floated, the download is huge load at 1.4gb and this Russian area is not the best for navigation aids and programming FMS units as most waypoints are not recognised. Most of the airports ILS coordinates also have to checked and recalibrated (Drzewiecki Design do provide all the correct coordinates) so there is a little work to do to set up repeat services but the work is worth the results.

Not only is the actual Moscow city and all it's buildings supported, you also get seven (if lite versions) of Moscow's other airports included as well, but the framerate processing of all this huge amount of objects and scale is pretty good to excellent. Framerate does hurt more on a lower (helicopter) level and certainly you need a computer with a little extra power is in no doubt required, but overall for the size of the area the scenery is extremely efficient.

Yes I was impressed by this Moscow City Scenery, as this once very barren area of X-Plane is now a very attractive repeat destination as nothing can give you a greater fulfilment than seeing your destination appear in the distance and then give you a huge visual experience as you fly over and approach your destination.

Moscow City certainly delivers that and more...  Just more sceneries like this please!

Thank you for this very thorough (as always) review. I just bought it (it's on sale) and have only one disappointment so far: Red Square has no ILS or any landing aids at all for that matter. And what a nightmare of an approach! Also I was hoping the package would include an add-on that gives my c172 a big cup holder for my Stoli. Otherwise the scenery is gorgeous. What a country!
