Eravikulam National Park is one of the highlights of any visit to Kerala.

Elevated on a mountainous plateau, you will get to see some of the best views that God’s Own Country has to offer and the chance to spot an endangered Nilgiri Tahr Deer.

Now, if you think that there is no chance of seeing one and it’s a waste of money. I’m living proof that you can actually get a glimpse of the deer while you’re here and I have the photos to prove it too!

But, if you’re still on the fence and not sure what to expect. This post will give you everything you need to know before your visit.

Here are some essential tips for Eravikulam National Park in Munnar!

Heads up: my trip was sponsored by India Someday . Although I was on a gifted press trip all images and opinions are completely my own.

Nilgiri Tahr Deer Eravikulam National Park

What is Eravikulam National Park?

Eravikulam National Park has the proud title of the first National Park that opened in Kerala.

It’s tucked away in the Idukki district near Munnar and is located around 2,000 metres above sea level.

The whole park is around 97 square kilometres but when you visit, you’ll only be able to experience a fraction of that!

Inside the park, you can see wildlife, beautiful floral and fauna, and rolling hills including Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas.

The History of Eravikulam National Park

Although the park and its inhabitants are protected today, this wasn’t always the case.

In fact, it used to be a Game Reserve for the British. It attracted people from all over the world to travel to Munnar and hunt wild animals down for sport.

It was managed by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Company until 1971 when the lands were then handed to the Kerala Government.

In 1972 the Nilgiri Tahr was placed on the endangered list as nearly extinct due to extensive hunting practices. So, the park was then transformed into a conservation area to protect them.

Now, there are thought to be over 800 Nilgiri Tahr thriving in this park, making it one of the largest populations in the world!

Make sure you pop into the small museum in the park which explains more.

Where is Eravikulam National Park in Kerala and how to get there?

Eravikulam National Park can be found around 7 kilometres from Munnar in the Idukki district of Kerala.

It is easiest if you have your own means of transport to locate it, but you can easily rent a private car or taxi when you get here if you’re backpacking.

I would recommend hiring a driver for the day to take you to a couple of sites in the area (this should cost you around 2,000 rupees). This would be more cost-effective.

If you plan on taking public transport, you can hop on a bus heading Udumalaipettai from Munnar Bus stand and ask to be dropped off at the National Park.

If there aren’t any buses, try looking for shared Jeep options near the bus stand which may be heading to Eravikulam National Park.

I was guided around Eravikulam National Park with a naturalist guide from Route 49 adventures who escorted me here. It was amazing and my guide was so knowledgeable about the park. Check them out here !

Eravikulam National Park opening times and prices

The National Park is open from 7.30 – 4 pm daily. My advice would be to get there as soon as it opens.

Everyone that visits needs to buy a permit to enter the park;

  • Indian Nationals: 125 rupees
  • Children: 95 rupees
  • Foreign Nationals: 420 rupees
  • Ordinary Camera: 45 rupees
  • Video Camera: 335 rupees

Top tips for visiting Eravikulam National Park

Before I got to Eravikulam National Park, I had no idea what to expect. Would we be going on a safari in a jeep? Or, would it be like a zoo where the animals are trapped in cages.

I honestly had no idea, but now I have visited the park, I feel I can give you some advice to make sure you make the most of your visit and know what to expect!

Here are some essential tips for Eravikulam National Park;

Eravikulam National Park!

1. Eravikulam National Park is home to the endangered Nilgiri Thar Deer

As I’ve already mentioned, Eravikulam National Park has one of the largest Nilgiri Tahr populations in the world. There are thought to be 700-800 deer who have a home here.

Although there are so many, they are still sadly very much on the endangered species list. But, calving season takes place each year and the numbers continue to grow!

There are two groups of Nilgiri Tahr, the mixed group and the all-male species group. The male is called a saddleback and has big curved horns. Where the females have short horns and are a lot smaller.

Although there are so many, it can be a bit of pot luck whether you spot one! They often graze in the park but can be put off by the noise and smell of humans.

As well as these majestic creatures there are over 48 species of animals, 133 species of birds, 101 species of butterflies, and 21 species of amphibians! Not to mention all the flora and fauna too.

Nilgiri Tahr Deer at Erivakulum National Park

2. Eravikulam National Park is closed for calving season 3 months a year

So, when is the best season to visit Eravikulam National Park?

Well, the Kerala government always does what is right for the animals each season. Not only for their protection but also to ensure that the number of deer increases.

Each year the deers mate around July and August and then give birth to their young around January, February, and March.

During this time, the park is closed for the calving season!

So, I would make sure you don’t plan your visit around this time. Also, the park may be closed during monsoon season (June – August) if it is deemed dangerous.

The best time to visit the park is in summer, around April, May, and June. This is the best time to see wildlife as they will come out to find food and water.

My guide told me that the best time to visit during the day would be early morning. This is when it is quietest, so you skip the long queues and the animals won’t be hiding from loud voices.

Eravikulam National Park is open from 7:30 am – 4.00 pm.

3. You can’t drive up to the park, you must get a shared bus to the top of the plateau

Everyone that visits Eravikulam National Park has to park up in the car park at the bottom and get a shared bus ride to the top.

This is great for the environment as it means fewer cars polluting the park and controls the crowds too. But, this does mean long queues to wait for the buses.

The buses take around 30 people at a time and when it is busy, they run non-stop, so you shouldn’t have much of a problem. But, I personally would arrive early to skip the long lines.

The bus ride comes included as part of your park permit which I’ll go through below with a little secret on how to skip the queues too!

Eravikulam National Park buses

4. Buy tickets in advance to skip the queue

To enter the park, you will need to buy a permit which you can do at the visitor centre counter as soon as you arrive.

For Indian Nationals the permits are 125 rupees but Foreign Nationals pay 420 rupees per head. If you want to take pictures with a camera it’s an extra 45 rupees. The only benefit of paying more as a foreigner is you get to skip the queues.

Queues for the buses can reach up to 2 hours in peak season. A lot of tourists complain about their whole time being spent in a queue. So, to avoid it, I’d leave early.

If you want to save more time, I would highly recommend asking your guesthouse to buy your ticket in advance. That way you can skip some of the lines before you’ve even got there.

Unfortunately, you can’t do this online (don’t trust websites that offer!), It will just come with a small 50 rupees reservation fee.

I did hear a rumour that you can pay for a VIP service that lets you skip the lines too, but nothing official on the website about it. It could just be guards asking for tips lol.

Munnar National Park

5. Once you reach the top you must take a ‘walking safari’ around the National Park

Unlike other National Parks, Eravilkulam allows you to wander freely through a designated area.

They don’t run jeep safaris or anything like that to spot a deer, but you can go on a 2-3 hour private guided hike with permission from the park if you book in advance.

There is no limit as to how long you spend here, so if you fancied trying to spot deer all day, nobody will stop you.

It’s a nice easy stroll with epic views and I guess staying in one place, you have more of a chance to spot the deer. Better than frightening it off with the roar of a jeep engine!

Eravilkulam walking safari

6. It will be busy as the distance through the park is only a few kilometres

A lot of people who are looking to hike within nature are sorely disappointed when they arrive at Eravilkulam as they expected it to be a nature park with long walking trails.

In reality, you’ll be walking on solid concrete for just over a few kilometres in a set area of the park.

Because the path is so short and there are lots of crowds, it’s incredibly packed. There’ll be large groups and selfie sticks flying around everywhere!

Personally, I didn’t mind the ‘hike’ as it was nice and flat, it had panoramic views, I didn’t get lost (I’m the worst at navigating) and there’s the chance to spot wildlife too. But, I get it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

So, if you are expecting to go on a long trek into nature, I would recommend booking one with the park in advance. Or, better yet, save your money and find a guided trekking tour to go on in Munnar instead.

I would recommend visiting one of the tea plantation hikes in the area, read my guide all about the best tea plantations in Munnar here.

The Limit at Eravikulam National Park

7. Seeing a Nilgiri Tahr Deer is not guaranteed… but patience is key!

800 deer spread across 97 square kilometres of land means that your chances of spotting one aren’t high. They’re even less when you think that you’re only allowed to explore a few kilometres of that on a set walking path!

So, I wouldn’t set your expectations too high. But, it’s not impossible either, or, people wouldn’t pay!

When I visited the park, we got word that a few deer had been spotted near the endpoint of the path at the very top of the park. So, we pretty much ran up there to try and find them.

Unfortunately, they had moved on. Safe to say I was disappointed. I kept looking out, thinking I may have seen one in the bushes.

Although we were running on a strict time with our tour, I asked my guide if we could wait it out a few minutes to spot one.

A few minutes later, a family thought they had spotted a goat. But, in fact, it was a female Nilgiri Tahr coming out to graze on the main path. Then two more followed!

Everyone was gathering at the main point to take photos and to catch a glimpse! It was a great feeling.

The moral of this story? Wait it out a while! You never know.

Nilgiri Tahr Deer in Kerala

8. The views from the top of the park are still well worth the ticket price

Even if you don’t see a Nilgiri Tahr, I still think that a visit to the park is worth it for the breathtaking views you can get from up here!

Eravikulam is home to some of the highest peaks outside of the Himalayas and, along with that, you can spot endless tea fields, waterfalls and really experience God’s own country.

There are multiple points along the path that provide great views and selfie points. So, make sure you take some time to remain present and enjoy the beauty all around you.

Eravikulam National Park Tips

9. There are eco toilets in the park that you can pay to use

What I loved about this park was how eco-conscious they were. Not only was it a completely plastic-free zone, they also had eco-friendly toilets that you could pay to use.

It sounds weird but I actually prefer toilets you have to pay for in India, usually, this means that they will be clean.

I didn’t use the loos here, but I did hear that they are kept nice and tidy throughout the day. So, don’t worry if you need to use the facilities.

These are located a little way up a hill just beyond the gift shop.

Eco Friendly toilet in India

10. Make sure you look around the souvenir shop, all proceeds go towards the park

I’m such a nerd when it comes to safari parks and I was so happy when I saw they had a gift shop here.

Inside, they sold all sorts of t-shirts, caps, safari hats, magnets, and even little Nilgiri Tahr deers as souvenirs!

I was super tempted to buy a hat, but as it wasn’t too hot and sunny I didn’t bother. But, my guide and I did have a lot of fun trying them on.

Make sure you stop in here as all proceeds go towards the park.

11. They sell some amazing local ice cream in the café!

The day I arrived in Munnar, I lost my voice to a sore throat. So, I was craving something cold. I know, I know, you’re not meant to have cold drinks or ice cream for sore throats. But, I just needed something to take the itch away.

Thankfully, they have a cute little café at the park that sells local ice creams made from local produce in the area. They had butterscotch and chocolate!

If you are feeling peckish, there are also some snacks you can buy like samosas. Also, they sell your classic chai and coffee too if you needed a little pick me up.

The queue is a little bit of a free for all though and I lost my temper when a lady shoved me with her elbow trying to push in front of me. But, the fight for ice cream was worth it lol!

Eravikulam National Park

12. Every 12 years a rare Neelakurinji flower phenomenon happens here

The Neelakurinji flower bloom is a rare phenomenon that occurs in Kerala. But, it only happens once every 12 years!

Most plants die and regrow with the seasons annually but the Neelakurinji has a different cycle.

“Neela” in the local language means blue and “Kurinji” is the local name for the tiny blue flowers. When they come together, they almost look like a sea of purple lavender!

The last one took place in 2018, so it’s not expected to happen again until 2030.

Around this time, Kerala will see thousands of tourists, botanists, scientists, and naturalists flood the area. So, book way in advance.

Click here to read more about the Neelakurinji season

13. It’s a plastic, clutter and cruelty free zone

Eravikulam is a strictly plastic-free zone, but you are permitted to bring water bottles. Don’t bring any plastic bags with you to the park or anything you can dispose of either.

On that note, don’t bring a picnic along with you to eat. This is strictly not allowed in the park.

If you do happen to see a wild deer, I shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t touch it, or scare it away.

Deers often use scent to recognise their young and if they feel the baby has been contaminated it may abandon it. Plus, it’s just cruel!

There are a hundred signs in the park about what you should or should not do here. So, you shouldn’t be in any doubt.

14. Look out for leeches!

I travelled just after the monsoon season and Kerala was the first time I had ever been leeched!

While I was taking pictures of the deer on the grassy knoll, I suddenly felt a tingly feeling between my toes and saw a little baby leech wiggling!

I freaked out and grabbed it, then threw it away so god knows where it is now. But, luckily as it was so small it didn’t make me bleed.

Long story short, watch out for leeches in the monsoon season, and don’t wear sandals!

Leeches in Eravikulam National Park

15. Don’t forget to visit Lakkam Falls nearby

Did you know that there are some gorgeous waterfalls that form part of the wider Eravikulam National Park? One of these is called Lakkam falls.

It’s by far one of the prettiest falls in the whole of Munnar and you don’t need a national park permit to visit.

Entrance to the falls costs 20 rupees and it provides a cool respite in the humid monsoon months. My favourite part about my visit was swimming in the icy falls and getting a natural fish spa!

It’s located a few kilometres from the park, so if you are visiting make sure you ask your driver to stop here for a while.

The best time to visit these falls is monsoon time (July-Sep), if you come in summer (April-June) this will be dried up!

Where to stay in Munnar

Although staying in the centre of Munnar provides cheap accommodation, the best way to experience this hill station is to stay in the countryside!

India Someday booked me into the adorable Mistletoe Munnar Homestay which not only had a beautiful double room but an epic view from my balcony too.

One of my fondest memories was eating breakfast out on my private terrace overlooking the rolling hills. It was magic!

As it is a family-run homestay they also cook homemade traditional meals in their kitchen too. Each night I asked for a surprise and it got better and better.

Eravikulam National Park Safari Guide: Must visit in Munnar

Nilgiri Tahr at Eravikulam National Park safari

Last Updated on March 25, 2024 by admin

Are you on a Munnar trip and want to see something other than tea gardens? Then Eravikulam National Park safari could be something to think about. Learn all about what sightings are possible, safari timings and how to reach Eravikulam.

I am on a never-ending chase to visit any National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary on every journey that I am on. It is fascinating for me to explore the local wildlife and bird species and document them. On one of such journeys when I was on a road trip in Kerala , I happened to experience the Eravikulam National Park safari near Munnar. Eravikulam National Park is famous for Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered deer species and I was super excited to photograph them and know more about them!

Table of Contents

Where is Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park is situated in the Idukki district, about 8km away from Munnar and has earned the title of the first National Park that opened in Kerala. Located approximately 2,000 metres above mean sea level, it offers picturesque views of the Munnar valley and the tea gardens. The national park is around 97 square kilometres but only a fraction of that is open to visitors!

How to reach Eravikulam National park from Munnar

Private cars or taxis can be easily hired to reach here from Munnar. Motorbikes are available for rent and one can easily reach here on them. Public transport such as buses is available (board a bus going to Udumalaipettai from Munnar Bus stand).

History of Eravikulam National Park

Just like most National Parks in India, the protection of the species started only after losing a huge chunk of them! Rajamalai, as it was called in yesteryears, used to be a former hunting reserve for the Britishers before Independence. The park attracted hunters from all over the world to hunt Nilgiri Tahr for sport. Their peculiar shaped horns were why they were hunted.

It was managed by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Company until 1971. With almost extinct numbers of Nilgiri Tahr due to hunting and shrinking of natural habitat, in 1972 the land was handed over to the Kerala Government. Since then it has been transformed into a conservation area and is also known as Rajamalai Eravikulam National Park.

The conservation efforts have paid off over the years and the park now houses over 860 Nilgiri Tahr (Census 2018) making it one of the largest populations in the world! The pandemic has brought even bigger cheer with a record 155 Nilgiri Tahr calves born in 2020 .

Eravikulam National Park Animals and Birds

Apart from the main attraction of Nilgiri Tahr which is found in abundance, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Dhole, Leopard and Tiger are some of the predators documented here. Some little-known animals such as Nilgiri Langur, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Indian Porcupine, Nilgiri Marten, Small Clawed Otter, Ruddy Mongoose, and Dusky Palm Squirrel are also found.

132 species of birds have been recorded which include endemics like Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, White Bellied Shortwing, Nilgiri Flycatcher and Kerala Laughingthrush.

Eravikulam National Park entry fee and timings

The National Park opens daily at 8 am and closes at 2 pm. The permit is available online as well as at a ticket window of the park gate.

The permit charges for the Eravikulam National Park safari are

Indian Adults – INR 200

Foreign Nationals – INR 500

Ordinary Camera – INR 50

Video Camera – INR 350

Reservation fee INR 50 (Reservation counter 9 am – 3 pm at the Information Centre, Munnar)

When to visit Eravikulam National Park

Planning a visit to Eravikulam National Park depends upon when the park is open for visitors. The park is closed twice from July to August for their mating season (all national parks in India are closed during this time) and then the second time while giving birth to the calves in the months of January to March.

So, the best time to visit the park is in the summer months – April to June or in the winter months from October – to January. I visited in December second week and the weather was perfect, and so was the sighting.

Start the safari as early as possible in the morning so as to skip the queues, avoid crowds and in pleasant weather.

Eravikulam National Park Safari: My experience

The biggest mistake I made was not to book the safari in advance. Honestly, visiting the park was not one of the things to do in Munnar but only when I reached Munnar and my hotel owner convinced me to go there. So I started on an early morning post breakfast. The car driver warned me of long queues but I was determined to pay my visit no matter what.

The car dropped me at the ticket window gate and I could see a long queue even before the ticket window had actually opened. I was not sure what to do as I would easily spend an hour just in the queue. I relented and walked to the end of the queue to place myself.

It was well over 90 minutes when I got my permit to go into the park. I was given two slips which I had to hand over to the shared bus driver and another one for the entry into the park. Yes, private vehicles are not allowed in the Eravikulam National Park Safari and neither are open gypsy like other Indian National Parks. Also Read: Manas National Park

I stood in another queue for the shared bus and finally after 15 minutes the bus arrived and took the visitors up the hills. The bus accommodated about 30 people. I could feel the air getting crisper with each turn on the hill loops. After about 10 minutes we were dropped at the entrance of the Eravikulam National Park. From there it was a safari walk. No vehicles are allowed beyond this point. Basically, visitors are allowed to walk in the designated areas to spot the animals and appreciate the rolling hills and visit Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas.

Visitors can spend as much time as they want at the top of the hill. You are allowed to hire a private guide with permission from the park if you book in advance.

Once you are done, you have to come back to the designated area for shared bus pick up wherein the buses will take you back to the ticket window station.

If the weather is pleasant, the walk can be quite enjoyable with epic views of the hills. I personally liked the hike which was on a nice and flat concrete road (yes there is no forest or nature trail here), it had panoramic views, a well-laid path and there’s the chance to spot wildlife too. So, if you are expecting to go on a long trek into nature, I would recommend booking one with the park in advance.

Walking safari on a concrete road

I walked and walked and walked. I overheard a lot of groups who were disappointed as to not spot anything and that they wasted the money. But I didn’t lose hope, yet!

I saw a group of people gathered near some bushes and their excited voices meant they saw something. Yep, I finally managed to see the Nilgiri Tahr. The deer seem terrified with so many people pushing and shoving each other to get a glimpse.

And it managed to escape away.

Most people from this group turned back, but I decided to go further. And I was rewarded with more sightings.

Almost 2 hours into the Eravikulam National Park Safari, I was hungry and wanted to pee. I had seen paid eco-toilets on my way up so I decided to hurry back down. These are located a little way up a hill just beyond the souvenir shop.

And just like that I was back at the bus pick up point, happy and satisfied to have seen the Nilgiri Tahr in the wild.

Because all the proceeds go towards the park maintenance. I love national park merchandise and I do pick up something or the other. I paid a quick visit and picked a t-shirt. Merchandise here includes caps, safari hats, t-shirts, fridge magnets and even little Nilgiri Tahr deers as souvenirs!

Lakkam falls.

The Lakkam Waterfalls originate in the heart of the Eravikulam National Park offering breathtaking views. It’s by far one of the pristine waterfalls in the entire town of Munnar and you don’t need a national park permit to visit.

Entrance to the falls cost INR 20 and it provides a cool respite. It is located a few kilometres from the park, so if you are visiting make sure you ask your driver to stop here for a while.

Where to stay in Munnar

Munnar is a family favorite destination and also popular among honeymoon couples. The pleasant weather allures visitors of all ages and interests to visit Munnar all year round. For the same reason, there are a lot of accommodation options in Munnar.

I stayed at the Blackberry Hills Resort Munnar and it had the most beautiful unparalleled views of the tea gardens. My favourite part was their Hornbill restaurant whose location felt like it was suspended in the hills. They even have a walking trail from the restaurant to a village in the valley nearby which equals a birdwatching trail too.

Tips for Eravikulam National Park Safari

  • Just like every national park in India, spotting a Nilgiri Tahr is not guaranteed. Over 850 deers are spread across 97 square kilometres of land which means the chances of spotting are less. They’re even less when you think that you’re only allowed to explore a few kilometres of that on a set walking path!
  • But patience is the key. Keep your eyes and ears open rather than clicking selfies all over the way.
  • Don’t limit yourself to a particular distance. Push those boundaries for spotting wildlife and rewarding yourself with amazing views.
  • Hire a guide for increasing your chances of spotting the Nilgiri Tahr.
  • But if you still run out of luck, the views from the top of the Eravikulam National park safari are still well worth the ticket price. I still think that a visit to the park is worth it for the breathtaking views you can get from up here!

Eravikulam National Park is a wildlife lover’s paradise, with its diverse and rich fauna that includes endangered and endemic species. The main attraction of the park is the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered species of wild goat that is endemic to the Western Ghats. The park has the largest surviving population of Nilgiri Tahr , estimated at 750 individuals. The Nilgiri Tahr is also known as the Varayadu or the mountain goat in Malayalam, the local language of Kerala.

The Nilgiri Tahr has a stocky body with short legs and curved horns. It has a brownish-grey coat with a dark stripe along its back. The males have a silver-grey saddle patch on their backs and a dark mane on their necks. The females are smaller and lighter in color than the males. The Nilgiri Tahr lives in groups called herds, which consist of females and young ones led by an adult male. The males are territorial and fight with each other for dominance and mating rights.

The Nilgiri Tahr is mainly found in the grasslands and shola forests of the park, where it feeds on grasses, herbs and shrubs. It is most active in the morning and evening hours, when it grazes and rests on the slopes. It is shy and elusive by nature, but can be easily spotted in the Rajamala area of the park, where most of the tahrs are concentrated. The best time to see them is from December to April, when they descend to lower altitudes for breeding.

Apart from the Nilgiri Tahr, Eravikulam National Park also hosts many other animals and birds that can be seen in their natural habitat. Some of them are:

Lion-tailed macaque: A rare and endangered primate that has a black coat with a silver mane and a long tail with a tuft at the end. It lives in small groups in the shola forests and feeds on fruits, seeds and insects.

Leopard: A large and powerful cat that has a yellowish-brown coat with black spots and rosettes. It is an agile climber and a stealthy hunter that preys on deer, wild boar, monkeys and other animals.

The Neelakurinji flowers have a bell-shaped corolla with four lobes and a long tube. They grow in clusters on shrubs that reach up to 2 meters in height. They have a sweet fragrance and attract bees, butterflies and birds. The Neelakurinji flowers have a blooming cycle of 12 years, which means they flower only once in their lifetime and then die. They are also used as an indicator of time, as they mark the passage of 12 years. The local name Neelakurinji comes from the words neela, which means blue, and kurinji, which is the name of a mythical flower mentioned in ancient Tamil literature.

Apart from the Neelakurinji flowers, Eravikulam National Park also boasts of many other plants and flowers that grow in different habitats and elevations. Some of them are:

Around 11km north of Munnar, Eravikulam's 97 sq km of grasslands and shola conceal the world's largest population of endangered, but almost tame, Nilgiri tahr; 700 to 800 of these mountain goats roam its wilds. Safari buses take you into the Rajamala tourist zone where the likelihood of sightings is high. The park also hosts Anamudi, South India's highest peak (2695m), though it was closed to climbers at the time of research, as were all Eravikulam treks (these may reopen).

From Munnar, taxis cost ₹800 return with a couple of en-route stops; government buses take you the final 4km from the checkpoint.

What are the nearby attractions of Eravikulam National Park:

After completing a tour of the national park, you can visit Marayoor. It is the hub of sandalwood forest in Kerala. You can also find many Megalithic Dolmens (locally called Muniyara) here. Go for the Marayoor Heritage Safari, organized by the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. It will take you to Ezuthala rock paintings and Anakottapara Megalithic Park.

What are the accommodation options:

There are no accommodation options available at Eravikulam National Park. Hence, it is best to stay at Munnar. Munnar has lots of options for overnight stays. We stayed at the Misty Munnar Resort. It is located in the midst of tea gardens. The USP of this resort is its terrace which offers splendid views of tea gardens.

Do’s and don’ts inside the Eravikulam National Park:

  • Don’t carry food and beverage inside.
  • Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol while visiting the park.
  • The park is plastic free zone. So, you cannot carry plastic items while visiting.
  • Don’t tease, pet or disturb the wild animals.
  • Maintain silence inside the park.
  • Carry umbrellas as rainfall is unpredictable here. We visited in the last week of October. It was raining when we went to the park.

A paradise full of rare varieties of flora and fauna, the Eravikulam National Park is home to Nilgiri tahr, a species of mountain goat currently listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Around one-third of the goat’s population in the entire world resides here. The other animals found are the Indian flying fox, Asiatic jackal, sloth bear, small Indian civet etc. The land is covered in shola forests, concentrated in the valleys of the jungle. Turner’s Valley, which sits about halfway into the park, is the deepest point. The Neelakurinji plant, which is again an uncommon sight, grows here once every 12 years. Put this place on your must-visit list because Anamudi, the highest peak in South India also lies here. Eravikulam lies 13 km away from Munnar. Remember, the park is closed for the public during January-February due to calving season.

Spread over a vast area, Eravikulam was declared a national park in 1978, given the hundreds of mammals, amphibians and birds that were found here.

Editor's Review

The Eravikulam National Park is known for its unique and beautiful ecosystem. The views throughout your visit will be breathtaking. The main problem is that the park gets too hot during the afternoons and sometimes you wouldn't get to see a lot of animals.

We kindly request our guests to respect the pristine environment. Please do not litter or feed the animals. In order for you to enjoy a safe trip, please stay a little away from the animals and do not cause them any indirect harm.

  • Fresh air with awesome scenery.
  • Stunning views of the mountains, valleys and tea plantations in the back-drop.
  • Lots of opportunities to take pictures.
  • The bus ride to the park is a nice experience providing scenic views.
  • Long queues for buying the ticket and boarding the bus.
  • At times, there might be no sighting of animals.
  • The bus rides can be scary to some as the roads are hugging the cliff and they have only a few inches for the incoming traffic to pass.
  • The place gets too hot during the afternoons.

I would love to visit Munnar again. we, couple of us friends from Aurangabad flew down to Kochi last year to visit Munnar. We were not disappointed, stayed in Club Mahindra Chinnkanal. I heard about visit to ervikulam park is difficult as the timings of the tour bus and booking needs to be coordinated prior to the visit. Is there any alternate arrangements to book the safari..like special tickets which can be purchased at the last minute or something like that? Because most people who comes without booking gets disappointed when they learn booking is needed for the safari.

Information shared here is much appreciated. going to munnar next month and will visit Eravikulam National park. Nilgiri Tahrs seems to be mingling with tourists there?

About Eravikulam National Park

You might have heard of the famous Annamalai Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu which is the extended version of this project itself initiated at the renowned nationalized park named Eravikulam. The widely disappearing and endangering NilgiriTahr needed to be protected and this beautiful miniature of a hill station houses them in abundance. It is a place that cannot be missing on your trip to the lush Munnar. It has always been a prominent part of almost every Munnar package.

Major Attractions

Apart from fifty percent of the world's entire population of the rare Tahr is stuffed on this little hilltop of the national park spread in the area of about a hundred square kilometre. While the Core and Buffer regions are restricted respectively, the tourists are free to visit the area made exclusively open for them. If lucky you may also spot tigers, Giant Squirrels and even Lion-tailed Macaque here. The representative site is definitely among the best  places to visit in Munnar  and it is also a top location in all  Munnar tour packages .

The Safari bus available at the entrance is the only way to reach the spot through mountain curves with the soft breeze and mini waterfalls adding to the beauty of the experience. The waiting period is fairly high. It is advised to take raincoats along as it may get rainy anytime during monsoons at that height.

MUNNAR WEATHER

More than anything else, what will attract the nature lover in you is the mind-blowing Munnar weather at the hilltop.

Trekking and sightseeing

The entire trek of about 2 kilometers that you cover with your friends, family or even alone will be one of a lifetime. Walking around the curvy roads will definitely give you a sneak peek of natural paradise. The heart-melting panoramic visuals of the several Western Ghat peaks, predominantly the Anamudi peak from the top the scenic beauty will steal your heart away. Trust us, if you want to walk with the clouds, try this.

Eravikulam National Park Neelakurinji

One of the worlds rarest of flowers called Neelakurinji blooms on the Munnar hills once every 12 years. This rare flower is a gift that truly needs to be seen.

MunnarEravikulam National Park online booking

This park counted as one of the best Munnar tourist places that cannot be missed if you are on a tour to Kerala. Tourists can book their tickets online on their official website by filling in the necessary details like name, number of persons, date of visit, and time slots.

The breathtakingly beautiful park is also home to the endangered  Nilgiri Tahr, a wild mountain goat. The highest peak south of the Himalayas – the Anamudi, is also located here and offers excellent opportunities for trekking expeditions and wildlife spotting for nature lovers.

Wildlife enthusiasts, this way, please! Here’s an exciting opportunity to see various flora and fauna at the Eravikulam National Park!

The park boasts a high population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and other rare species of animals like Nilgiri marten, ruddy mongoose, small clawed otter, dusky striped squirrel, etc. The Eravikulam National Park is also the natural habitat of other animals like Elephants, Tigers, Nilgiri Langurs, Leopards, Sambar Deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, golden Jackal, Porcupines, small-clawed Otters, Nilgiri wood Pigeons, and more.

The park has a wide variety of flora, including Microtropis Ramiflora, Actinodaphne Bourdilloni, Pittosporum Tetraspermum, Chrysopogon Zelanieus, Eupatorium Adenophorum, Syzygium Arnottianum, Strobilanthes Kunthiana (Neela Kurinji), Tripogen Bromodes, Arundinella Fuscata, Eulalia Phaeothrix, Cyanotis Species, etc.

Due to the unique climate conditions of the Eravikulam Park shola grasslands, lovely flowers grow in abundance here. Nearly 76 Pteridophytes and 727 Angiosperms grow here. Roses, Balsams, wildflowers and exotic species of orchids, including the long-thought-extinct Brachycorythis Wightii, are found in the park.

Neelakurinji

Once in twelve years, hues of blue cover the hills of Munnar as the Neelakurinji blooms. Neelakurinji or the ‘Strobilanthes Kunthiana’ blooms in 40 or so varieties in Munnar, and the best time for viewing them begins in August and lasts up to October. Take a look at the thick forest cover of the park! Grasslands and the Shola Forests are the two central physiognomic units of forests found within the Eravikulam National Park. They are classified as Southern Montane Wet Temperate Forests. Southern West Coast Evergreen Forests cover a small portion of the park on the western side, and Moist Deciduous Forests are on the eastern side.

Tropical Evergreen Forests with tall green trees are seen on the western end, where the forest merges with the Anamudi Reserve forest. Towards the eastern periphery, close to the Talliar estate, there is a small portion of deciduous forests with trees like Rosewood and Pterocarpus, and the undergrowth is mostly Lantana. Deciduous, evergreen forests survive next to grasslands due to the area’s microclimate.

See the glory of nature around you at Eravikulam National Park! A wide variety of animals exist in harmony in this national park. The climate, existing vegetation, quality of the soil, and rainfall conditions all contribute to the existence of these animals. Nearly 17 mammals, 11 birds, and 7 butterflies are indigenous to the Western Ghats. About 48 species of Mammals are present at the park, including Nilgiri Tahr and Nilgiri Marten, out of which 17 are endemic to the Western Ghats. Other animals at the park include amphibians, birds, and butterflies.

Nilgiri Tahr

Here’s a golden chance to see the Nilgiri Tahr at Eravikulam National Park. A vast population of Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered goat species, inhabits the park. The Nilgiri Tahr has short, dark, coarse hair and a mane and is diurnal in nature. The rare goat can be found most actively grazing in the early morning and late afternoon.

Habitat loss and poaching are the two major threats to the Nilgiri Tahr. As the Eravikulam National Park and the grass hills of Anamalai have the highest density and largest surviving population of Nilgiri Tahr, conservation efforts have been ongoing for quite a long time.

Eravikulam National Park lies 7000 ft. above sea level, and the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, is 2,695 m.

What about going on a wild river rafting through the rivers in Eravikulam National Park? The Chinnar and Pambar are two rivers that run through the Eravikulam National Park and support the ecology of the sanctuary. Pambar originates in the Anamudi hills and passes through the Eravikulam National Park, and flows into the Chinnar sanctuary. Both rivers merge at Koottar and drain into the Amaravathy reservoir in Tamil Nadu.

Be ready to be enchanted by the breathtaking beauty of Lakkam Waterfalls at Eravikulam National Park! The sheer sight of the crystal clear water falling with great force down the rocks is always beautiful! Many treks in the park lead you to enjoy the scenic beauty at Lakkam Waterfalls.

The Kanan Devan Hill Produce Company took over this area for Tea plantations after the British rule ended. In 1971, the Kerala government established a reserve for conserving Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered species. Later, the reserve was named Eravikulam Rajamalai wildlife sanctuary in 1975 and became a national park in 1978.

The vegetation of Eravikulam National Park consists of three different plant communities:

  • Grasslands : They cover over 60% of the land in Eravikulam and are mostly covered in wild grass with a few scattered trees here and there.
  • Shola Forest : Up to 20 to 25% of the land area in the Shola forest region is made up of patches of tropical Montane forests.
  • Shrublands: The rest of the areas of the park have scrubs, rocky cliffs, and very small sections of Southern Tropical Hill Forests.

The Eravikulam Park region has nearly 300 grass species, around 22 species of Bryophytes (basically mosses), around 12 species of Pteridophytes (vascular plants or trees), and over a hundred species of fungi.

  • The park has a plethora of exotic trees and shrubs varieties. Many plant varieties that grow only in the purest, non-polluted atmosphere can also be found here. The grasslands have an abundance of wild orchids and other flowering plants. The flower-laden Rajamali during spring is a scintillating sight.
  • Nilgiri Tahrs are not the only wildlife you can spot here. The fauna here is as rich and biodiverse as the flora. You can spot 26 different species of mammals at Rajamalai and the list includes wild elephants, langurs, marten, and much more. If you observe closely you can steal a glance of wildlife lurking in the bushes and the forest beyond.
  • The place is a favourite sojourn spot for migratory birds and other exotic birds. The Rajamalai area and its premises are home to about 120 species of birds. The black and orange flycatcher, Nilgiri wood pigeon, Nilgiri Pipit, white-bellied short wing and laughing thrush can be spotted here. The vibrant birds, flowers, and plants make the place colourful and sublime.

Best time to visit Eravikulam National Park

The best time to visit the park is right after the monsoon in June from July to September. The place will be encrusted with lush-green grass and thick vegetation. There will be freshness and warmth in the area and the environment. Unlike other attractions like waterfalls and mountain slopes, Rajamalai grasslands are safe in the monsoon season. The magnificent view of the grassland amidst the torrential rains is an out of the world experience. The peak season starts with the onset of summer; from March to May. The place will be crowded and the signature chill of Munnar could be absent during that time.

Before we explore the attractions of the Eravikulam National Park, it would be worth the effort to understand a bit of its history. During the colonial days, the High Range Game Preservation Association managed the current park area as a game preserve for the erstwhile Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company. The local tribal members of Muduvan community, known for their tracking skills were employed as game watchers. They are the original inhabitants of the Kannan Devan Hills in which the national park is located. The area was taken over in 1971 by the Kerala Government and declared as a sanctuary in 1975. It was upgraded to a national park in 1978 in recognition of its unique ecological values. The planter community and the Muduvans continue their association with the protection and management of the park.

The national park is a protected area and is divided into three regions - the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. Visitors are allowed only to the tourism area that is in Rajamalai, the region lying beyond the road entry into Eravikulam.

From the entrance of the national park, you are taken inside on eco-friendly vehicles. As the vehicle carrying you and the forest personnel climbs up the winding tarred road, the sprawling tea plantations on your left would become more visible and so would be the panoramic view of the valley. Upon reaching the checkpoint, after alighting from the vehicle you are allowed inside the park only after completing the mandatory checking of your belongings. The only motorable road inside the park passes through the southern extremity inside the tourism zone (Rajamala) to the Rajamallay tea estate.

Entering the visitors' zone of the national park, you will find a vast rocky façade, towering above you, which is an edge of the high rolling plateau comprising the core area of the park. Walking on the pathway going further up, you can check-out the rolling hills interspersed by tea plantations on the eastern side. It is a vast view that sometimes gets completely obscured by sheets of mist and at times thick white clouds floating like cauliflowers.

As one keeps moving inside the park, you would notice sudden popping up of heads from grassy slopes or a pair of prominent horns from the edge of a rock watching your movements. These are the crowd pullers of the national park - the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. The Nilgiri Tahr is endemic to the southern Western Ghats. Once a shy animal, the Tahr over the years became less apprehensive to human presence. These days you can watch them at a close distance and would love opportunities to photograph them and can enjoy close observations. The fully grown male is known as a 'saddle back' and is much bigger and darker than the female and has a silvery saddle like patch on its back. Its predators include wild dog, leopard and tiger.

The main area of the national park comprises a high rolling plateau with a base elevation of about 2000 m from mean sea level. The park comprises mostly of high altitude grasslands and with sholas (stunted group of evergreen forests) located in the valleys and folds of the park. You would also find several perennial streams crisscrossing the park that originate in the sholas . Shrub lands are seen along the bases of the cliffs.

Standing inside the visitor zone of the park, you could spot the Anamudi peak, which is the highest (2695 m) south of the Himalayas. Turner's valley, which splits the national park roughly in half from northwest to southeast, is the deepest in the area. Those who love the sight of high altitude plants would appreciate the presence of orchids and balsams in abundance in the park. Besides the Tahr, perhaps the crowning glory of the park area is the once-in-twelve-year flowering spectacle resulting from mass flowering of the shrub Neelakurunji (Strobilanthus Kunthianum). This phenomenon was last recorded in 2006.

Besides the day visits in the tourism zone of the Eravikulam National Park, those who are keen to undertake trekking in this national park can go for the 'Gouldsbury's Trail,' named after J . C. Gouldsbury, former General Manager of Kannan Devan Tea Company. This is a trekking program inside the buffer zone of the Eravikulam National Park. The trek would take you through rich forest wealth and would have opportunities to enjoy wonderful sights, smell and sound of diverse plants and animal life.

When it comes to faunal wealth in the park area, giving company to the Nilgiri Tahr are the rare Nilgiri marten, ruddy mongoose, small clawed otter and dusky striped squirrel. Elephants make seasonal visits to the park area.

If you happen to be a birdwatcher, then the park area is a dream come true. The park is home to about 120 species of birds, which include endemics like black and orange flycatcher, Nilgiri pipit, Nilgiri wood pigeon, white-bellied shortwing, Nilgiri verditer flycatcher and Kerala laughing thrush. And if you favour wings of lesser form, then the endemic butterflies in the shola-grassland ecosystem of the national park like the red disk bushbrown and Palni fourwing would be of interest, which are among the 100 odd butterflies listed inside the park. And you would be lucky to spot a unique inhabitant of the park - the Atlas moth, the largest of its kind in the world.

The national park comes with an amenity centre run by the eco-development committees and eco-shop that sells different products, the benefit of which goes for the conservation of the national park.

Options for staying are available in the nearby town of Munnar, which is about 13 km from the park. By staying in Munnar, besides the Eravikulam National Park, you can also visit the nearby wildlife destination of Chinnar and also visit en route to Chinnar the sandalwood forests at Marayoor. As far as travel by road is concerned, Munnar is well connected from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The park remains open from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. It will remain closed during the breeding season of the Nilgiri Tahrs that usually occurs between January and March, every year.
