Planting Seeds

As well as educating students about the identification of fruits and vegetables, they will have the opportunity to create their own garden to take home. This garden will contain seeds like onions, squash, pumpkins, and more. After learning about the preparation of the food farmer's make available to us, they will be able to grow their own food at home.

Farm to School Visits

Many preschool and childcare facilities plan an annual visit from our petting zoo. These educational visits can include pony rides or the indoor petting zoo, but the most popular farm to school activity is our traditional 12 animal pet farm.

The duration of the event is up to you, but two hours is the most common. Children are usually brought out in classes for a pre-determined amount of time.

Our staff are knowledgeable and can answer a variety of questions about the animals. While we do not have a set demonstration, the staff can accommodate most requests to discuss specific topics with your classes.

You can learn more about space requirements and other frequently asked questions for Farm to School visits while checking pricing and availability.

The Total Amish Experience

Amish schoolhouse with students

Visiting The Amish Village is a great way for school students to learn about a culture that has remained relatively unchanged for more than 300 years. Your class can get out of the classroom and use all of their senses to fully experience what it means to live like the Amish do in today’s society. On your trip, your students will enjoy multiple educational features, including the following:

  • Authentic Amish Farmhouse: Listen to stories about Amish history, culture, and religious traditions.
  • One-room Schoolhouse: Compare your school to the Amish schoolhouse, and even see real examples of Amish students’ classwork.
  • Windmill & Water Wheel: Get a taste of living off the grid and how these tools make it possible for the Amish to complete certain tasks.
  • Blacksmith Shop: Examine the tools and equipment used to keep an Amish farm running.
  • Amish Barn: Pet and interact with the animals in our barn. (Be prepared for farm animal smells!)
  • Buggies, Plows, and Tools: Sit on a real Amish buggy and see the world from another’s perspective.
  • Picnic Grounds: Bring bagged lunches or purchase baked goods at the market to enjoy on our open-air picnic grounds.
  • Shops: Purchase an Amish-made or Lancaster-themed souvenir to commemorate this educational experience.

School Class Trip Details

Our staff is dedicated to helping you plan the details of your field trip to make sure your students get the most out of their educational experience. We can accommodate multiple busloads of students, and we are happy to tailor our tours to fit the needs of your specific group. Student tours start out with a 25-minute guided tour of our authentic Amish Farmhouse, where a local tour guide will provide engaging information about the Amish and encourage your students to ask questions about what they’re learning.

At the conclusion of the Amish Farmhouse tour, your local guide will escort the students as they explore the rest of our 12-acre property and outbuildings. During this 30-minute tour, students can ask questions about the Amish lifestyle, how different buildings are used, and more. Wherever your class wants to explore on the property, you’ll always have someone on hand to answer questions and enrich the students’ Amish experience.

Customizing for Your Class Trip

We welcome anyone who is curious about the Amish! Our tours are ideally suited for kindergarten through 6th grade, but we are able to adapt material to older students. You can even send outlines and curriculum ideas to our staff at least two weeks prior to your visit, and together we’ll develop the perfect class trip for you and your students.

Teachers and school administrators who have something specific in mind for a trip to Amish Country should be sure to contact us to discuss their plans. Whether it involves spending time with the farm animals at the barn, or a unique teaching experience in our one-room schoolhouse, we’re happy to customize a Lancaster County Amish experience just for your students.

Fall School Tour Program

This initiative and commitment began a few years ago with our Farm School Tour Program and has evolved today into a full-fledged educational program that provided an opportunity for everyone to come to the farm and spent time with Professor Cob in his very own “Classroom in the Corn.” Yes, Classroom in the Corn where students, teachers and parents will be in an actual Corn Field where it all happens. Subjects can vary but can be tailored to the needs of the school, class and organization.

During their visits, attendees will also be given a tour of the Farm, walk through the Education Maze and pick a Sugar Pumpkin. Following the formal program our guests are well to have lunch in our open lunch area where one can pack their own goodies or we can cater to your needs.

Our Fall School Tour Program runs through September and October from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Year Round Field Trips

Farm tour field trip (preschool - 1st grade).

Our Pre-K through 1st grade farm field trip begins with a farm tour which focuses on connecting kids to the land and helping them to enjoy all the sensory experiences the farm has to offer. This includes feeding our chickens, digging for worms in our worm bins, watching the birds, smelling the herbs, and tasting what delicious things are growing on the farm. We walk around the urban farm fields, explore the wetland and enjoy the children’s garden. We like to include a short break following the tour for groups who wish to bring a snack and take a break at our picnic tables. For the last portion of the trip we will work on a land stewardship project around the farm.

Our all ages farm field trip includes a farm tour in which we dive a little deeper into the science of the farm. We talk about compost and decomposers while playing with red wiggler worms, introduce plant parts while tasting what's growing on the farm, explore the importance of wetlands while playing with the cattails and learn about plant medicine in our First Foods garden full of native plant species. For upper grade levels we also make sure to discuss our various programs at Zenger and how we can all participate in a healthier food system. We make sure to tailor the information, discussion, and tour to include the information that is most relevant to that group. For the last portion of the trip we focus on a land stewardship project that allows students to build a relationship with the land and become involved in the health of the farm ecosystem.

Cooking Field Trip (All ages)

Cooking is such a valuable and important skill for young people to build! This is a hands-on cooking field trip where groups will rotate between stewardship and cooking projects. Half of the group will begin their day in the kitchen making a recipe together using ingredients harvested from the farm. We aim to incorporate culturally relevant foods into our recipes. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn knife skills, build connection, and share stories from the kitchen. The other half will spend the first hour of the day performing a stewardship project as a way to thank the land for the food it’s providing us to cook with. The groups then switch and the other half cooks while those who cooked during the first half work on a stewardship project. We then all eat together and clean up as a team.

All field trips include a stewardship component which gives youth a chance to connect with and give back to the land. For field trips that are 2 hours in length, the stewardship component is one hour. For three hour long field trips the stewardship project is an hour and a half and includes a 30 minute lunch. We also welcome mixed groups of multiple grade levels.

Herbalism Field Trip

This field trip will offer students an entry point into the magical and healing world of plant medicine and herbalism! Students will start their time on the farm with an herb and plant medicine walk/scavenger hunt. They will later harvest herbs from the farm to prepare an herbal product as a group. Trip organizers can choose which herbal product their students will make- either a salve, herbal syrup, tea blend, candles, burning bundles, or kid-friendly tinctures.

Nature Craft Field Trip

This field trip offers students a chance to get creative and comfortable with nature crafting. Nature crafting is the practice of building relationships with nature through crafting! Students begin their time on the farm with a farm tour and scavenger hunt for fallen and/or bountiful beings on the farm to craft with. The group will later spend time crafting. Crafts can range from basket weaving, printmaking, flower pounding, and so much more. Trip organizers can choose ahead of time which nature craft they would like their students to create.

Macrocatch Investigation Field Trip

This field trip offers students a chance to immerse themselves in the wetland at Zenger Farm, and learn the ins and outs of water health and wetland landscapes. Students will begin their time on the farm taking a farm tour, with a focus on the wetland and their relationship to the farm. Later in their day, students will have the opportunity to practice macrocatch in the wetland. Macrocatch is an investigative activity that introduces students to water and ecosystem health, as well as resource preservation. Students will spend time in the wetland doing a critter catch and recording their observations in order to test a hypothesis about the health of the wetland here at Zenger Farm.

Native Trees Field Trip

Here at the farm we are super lucky to work with land that hosts many native trees! From Firs to Cedars to Maples, the farm is home to plenty of amazing elder trees, who have so much to teach us. This field trip introduces students to plant identification, the role of trees in the natural environment, and the different relationships trees have formed with humans and other plant beings. Students will start their time taking a farm tour, with a focus on native and evergreen trees and their relationship to the farm. Later in the day, students will have the opportunity to create their own nature craft inspired by the tree they took most interest in that day.

Pollinator Field Trip

This field trip offers students a chance to learn about how and why to support pollinators. Students will spend time observing pollinators in our farm fields, including honeybee hives and mason bee homes. Students will start their time on the farm taking a farm tour, with a focus on pollinators and their relationship with the farm. Later in their day, students will have the opportunity to inspect an empty beehive and beekeeping equipment, taste local honey and/or honeycomb, and make seed bombs with pollinator-friendly flowers.

Farm Tidbits- Farm to School Tours

Heather Tallman

April 29, 2024

Untitled-design-(6).jpg

A few weeks ago, we were happy to host two different groups of people passionate about getting more local food into schools. There has been a push recently to improve the quality of food that kids are eating in schools and the federal government has actually given some funding to schools to shift their purchases away from conventional food and towards local proteins, produce, etc.

Food service directors have said that in addition to better reviews from students, staff, and parents about the food quality, they've also seen significantly less food waste and are therefore happier that they feel like kids are getting more nutrition.

We hosted representatives from the Indiana Department of Health, Indiana Department of Education, local K-12 schools, value chain coordinators, local food distributors, dieticians, Indiana University, and Indiana Grown for Schools.

It was a great day showing them not only our operation but also the other local producers we work with and brainstorming as a group about what barriers we need to overcome to make local food more available to students.

Untitled-design-(7).jpg

The next day we hosted the Animal Agriculture from nearby Shoals High School. The students were not only able to tour parts of Sander Processing, they were also given a tour of our farm to connect the food on their lunch tray with where it often comes from- our farm!

We are always happy to host folks for a tour - please let us know if you would be interested!

Anzac Day is this Thursday. Here's where to watch a service and how to make Anzac biscuits

Three wreath laid at a memorial

This week Australians and New Zealanders will stop to commemorate Anzac Day.

But while the date is specific to the Gallipoli landing in 1915, it's a day to pay respect to all Australians who have served and died in military operations throughout history.

When is Anzac Day?

Anzac Day is on April 25 every year.

This year, that falls on a Thursday.

Is Anzac Day a public holiday?

Anzac Day is a public holiday across Australia and New Zealand.

In years where April 25 falls on a weekend, some states and territories may hold the public holiday on the Monday or Friday — but because it's on a weekday this year, that's not the case.

What does Anzac stand for?

Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

What is Anzac Day?

It's a national day of remembrance, commemorating those who have served and died in military operations.

Or, as the Australian War Memorial puts it, it's a time for the nation to "reflect on the many different meanings of war".

What's an Anzac biscuit?

These days, an Anzac biscuit (or bickie, depending on how casual you want to be) is typically a sweet oaty biscuit made with desiccated coconut and golden syrup.

Freshly baked Anzac biscuits cooling on a rack.

But in a summary of Australia's Anzac Day traditions written for the federal government , David Watt points out that this wasn't always the case.

"The original Anzac biscuit, also known as the Anzac wafer or tile, was a hardtack biscuit or long shelf-life biscuit substitute for bread," he says.

"These were not necessarily popular with soldiers at Gallipoli, but there are now recipes for more edible domestic versions."

The Australian War Museum has three historical Anzac biscuit recipes on its website , which we've reproduced here:

Anzac tile/wafer recipe

The army biscuit, also known as an Anzac wafer or Anzac tile, is essentially a long shelf-life, hardtack biscuit, eaten as a substitute for bread. Unlike bread, though, the biscuits are very, very hard. Some soldiers preferred to grind them up and eat them as porridge. The following recipe has been supplied courtesy of Arnott's Biscuits Limited, through Frank Townsend, chief chemist. Originally, the biscuits were baked in large industrial ovens but the recipe has been altered so that one can bake them in a domestic oven. Ingredients sufficient for six biscuits: 200gm/1.5cups/300mls flour 400 gm/3 cups/600 mls wholemeal flour 40 gm/5 tbls sugar 20 gm/3 tbls milk powder 1.5 gm/good pinch salt 220 mls water (Use self-raising flour. If self-raising flour is not available, sieve 10 grams of baking powder together with plain flour before adding other ingredients.) Method Place flour, sugar, and milk powder in a large bowl and blend with your fingertips. Form into a pile and scoop out a hole (well) in the centre. Add all of the water in which the salt has been dissolved. Thoroughly work the flour from the inside of the well into the water until the whole is a mass of lumps of flour and water. Once the dough is formed, transfer it to a tabletop or pastry board. The dough should now be torn apart, rubbed into balls, and thrown together, and the process repeated until the mass is well mixed and in the form of a hard dough. The dough is then rested for about half an hour. Now roll the dough in 8mm–thick sheets using a rolling pin and two 8mm thick guides (wooden slats are ideal), the dough being rolled down between the two guides until the rolling pin rests on the guides during each traverse. The rolled sheet of dough is then cut into 90 mm squares, preferably by pressing with the edge of a steel rule rather than slicing with a knife. The pressing action helps to join the top and bottom surfaces and will improve the lift on baking. A cardboard square, 90 mm on each side, can be used as a pattern to ensure uniformity in your tiles. Next, the biscuit squares should be docked by having a regular horizontal and vertical pattern of holes pushed into them at about 18 mm spaces with a flat-ended pin or rod. Push it in until it bottoms, twist slightly, and then withdraw. Repeat at the next position. Each biscuit should have five vertical and five horizontal rows of docker holes, 25 holes in all. There are those at the Memorial who argue for 49 holes (7 x 7) as the authentic number of docker holes. Place on a lightly greased steel baking sheet, with the biscuits about 6 mm apart, and form a wall around the load with scrap dough to avoid burning the edges of the biscuits. Bake at about 200 degrees centigrade for 30 to 40 minutes on a low shelf in the oven. Take care not to burn them. To achieve a suitable hardness in your biscuits, store for a time in an air-tight container.

Anzac biscuits (without coconut)

The popular Anzac biscuit is a traditional, eggless sweet biscuit. Early recipes did not include coconut. The following recipe (without coconut) was published in The Capricornian (Rockhampton, Queensland) on Saturday, 14th August 1926. Ingredients 2 cups rolled oats 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup plain flour 1/2 cup melted butter 1 tbsp golden syrup 2 tbsp boiling water 1 tsp bicarbonate soda (add a little more water if mixture is too dry) Method Combine dry ingredients. Mix golden syrup, boiling water and bicarbonate of soda until they froth. Add melted butter. Combine butter mixture and dry ingredients. Drop teaspoons of mixture onto floured tray, allowing room for spreading. Bake in a slow oven.

Anzac biscuits (with coconut)

The Country Women's Association of New South Wales Calendar of Cake and Afternoon Tea Delicacies: a recipe for each day of the year (Sydney: The Association, 1933) included two recipes for Anzac biscuits, one without coconut and the following version which included coconut. Anzac biscuits, No. 2 Ingredients: 1 cup each of rolled oats, sugar and coconut 1 tablespoon syrup 3/4 cup flour 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (dissolved in 2 tablespoons boiling water) Method Melt butter. Add syrup to dissolved soda and water. Combine with melted butter. Mix dry ingredients and stir in liquid. Place small balls on to a buttered tray and bake in a moderate oven. Lift out carefully with a knife as they are soft till cold.

Why is Anzac Day on April 25?

It's the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand armed forces during World War I.

On April 25 1915, the soldiers landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, in what was then known as Turkey (which is now officially known as Türkiye).

The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), which was the capital of the Ottoman Empire.

This was when Australia and New Zealand were fighting as part of the Commonwealth for Britain, which had declared war against Germany.

The Ottoman Empire was, at the time, an ally of Germany.

The Gallipoli campaign was supposed to be a fast victory, but it ended up dragging on for eight months, with heavy casualties on both sides.

More than 8,000 Australian soldiers died during the campaign.

It had a profound impact on Australians at home and the first day of the campaign "became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who died in the war", the Australian War Memorial website says.

"Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the actions of Australian and New Zealand forces during the campaign left a powerful legacy," the website says.

"What became known as the 'Anzac legend' became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways in which they viewed both their past and their future."

How is Anzac Day commemorated?

There are many traditions associated with the day, but the two key events are a memorial service at dawn and a march later in the day.

Dawn services are symbolic of the time Anzac forces originally landed on the shores of Gallipoli.

These ceremonies typically involve the laying of floral wreaths, a moment of silence and a rendition of The Last Post — which is a specific tune played on a bugle.

Later in the day, former and current military personnel and family representatives march in a parade and gather with the public for a formal memorial service.

Anyone can go to the public services , which are typically held in central areas.
