The Fixx (formed in 1979) is an English rock influenced new wave band that found its greatest success in the U.S. with the single “One Thing Leads to Another”, hailing from London, England.

Originally formed by vocalist and keyboard player Cy Curnin and drummer Adam Woods during their time in college, following a successful advertisement, they later invited guitarist Jamie West-Oram, keyboardist Rupert Greenall, and bassist Charlie Barret to complete the lineup. Initially under the moniker the Portraits, the group made their recording debut on the single “Hazards in the Home” released by Ariola Records. Despite garnering little attention, the group ploughed on, changing their name to the Fixx and recording the single “Lost Planes”.

The Fixx subsequently inked a deal with MCA Records who issued the band’s debut full-length “Shuttered Room” in 1982. Spawning the modest UK hits “Stand or Fall” and “Red Skies” the album epitomised the burgeoning new wave scene, however failed to make any impact in the U.S. Following the release bassist Barret was replaced by Dan K. Brown, who appeared on the group’s sophomore release “Reach the Beach” in 1983. Aided by the groove-producing single “One Thing Leads to Another”, the album reached the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, catapulting the Fixx to U.S. notoriety. Subsequent singles “Saved by Zero” and “Sign of Fire” further augmented this success, paving the way for the group’s third album.

The full-length “Phantoms” arrived in 1984, which despite charting and selling well failed to live up to the success of its predecessor. Maintaining the same synth-inspired formula, the band’s third fourth studio album “Walkabout” was released in 1986. Earning favourable reviews from the critical press, the album’s lead single “Secret Separation” topped the Billboard Album Rock Tracks upon release. The record would prove to be the last with producer Rupert Hine, after which William Wittman was enlisted to infuse a more guitar-driven sound.

“Calm Animals”, the group’s fifth album, was released in 1988, once again spawning a U.S. hit single, “Driven Out”. Featuring the No. 35 single “How Much Is Enough?” the Fixx’s subsequent album “Ink” was issued by MCA in 1991. Following the release Dan K. Brown left the group and was never officially replaced. In the run-up to the new millennium the band issued “Elemental” in 1998 and “1011 Woodland” in 1999, the latter of which was mainly an acoustic album with renditions of previous singles. In 2003, with former Adam and the Ants bassist Gary Tibbs, the Fixx issued their ninth studio album “Want That Life”, followed by “Beautiful Friction” in 2012.

Live reviews

When you go to a concert knowing a handful of songs, and weeks later you find yourself owning the entire back catalogue of the band, you know that they’ve done something right! That was what happened with me after I recently saw The Fixx in concert. I’d always been a fan of their hits, Stand or Fall, Deeper and Deeper, and the such like, but there was so much I had been missing out on! Cy Curnin’s vocals were the thing that initially drew me in – he sounds the same, if not better live, and nails every single note. However, as the night progressed, I began to notice the insane calibre of the band behind the front man. Their insertion of their newer, more mellow work blended wonderfully with the classics.

They really were better than ever in comparison with their earlier recordings, and seem to have matured and progressed with grace. Their interaction with the audience was refreshing, and it was great to hear them speak about the tracks that I had listened to so many times. It was a night to remember, and one I will be repeating if I get the chance.

The end of summer FREE concert that The Fixx plays at the Madison Beach Hotel in Connecticut has found its place in the hearts of fans as the PERFECT ending to the summer AND a Fixx tour. While not performed every year I was fortunate to attend in 2016 and witnessed an obviously tired band who REFUSED to let it reach their music. Almost as if they could be in the crowd at the same time, they sensed their fatigue, only to dig "deeper and deeper" to produce a stronger set of songs that even unsuspecting passersby were inspired to dance and sing to.

On a starlit sky outside the early 1800's era hotel the Fixx made this night spectacular. So many of us went for a night walk along the water humming or singing their tunes long after they departed.

I certainly hope for a repeat performance this year.

I have been to 20+ the FIXX concerts over the years... With my first one in 1983... Every show has been awesome... This is the 35rh Anniversary Of Reach The Beach album & tour (which was my first FIXX concert)... This is The Beach Tour... and I was. Blown away... The Fixx player the entire album of Reach The Beach from beginning to end. Took a small break... then came out and performed another full concert of songs... They never sounded better or looked better... Jamie was amazing on guitar solo parts... Cy’s voice was supreme... Adams hypnotic beats... Rupert’s amazing atmosphere from synths... and Dan’s enticing bass... I left in awe... I was like wow... Wish I could see the show all over again and again it was that good...

Fantastic show!

Loved them forever, FINALLY getting to see them. Now I'm both happy I finally did and upset I missed them until now. Bands both bigger-named and up-and-coming should take notes in how to give the best kind of performance from The Fixx. A great proportion of hits vs. less heard material, old and new, energetic vs. mellow, etc. They have so much spirit and belief in their art, a very emotional, passionate show. Funny guys, too!

If they come back, so will we!

Side note: Their opening act, Calhoun, was a great fit too. Smart choice and hope to hear them again too.

I saw The Fixx perform at City Winery (NYC) on 8/30/18. They were fantastic. I loved a lot of their early stuff from when I was in high school. They did a fantastic performance and played all my old favorites.

City Winery is a nice venue to see concerts. They have seating for everyone. The only drawback is that we were told that we could not stand up near our tables to watch the concert or dance. Toward the end of the show, most of the section in front was up dancing.

What can I say.....I love this band. They ALWAYS put on a fantastic show. We see them live whenever they're in town and Cy Curnin and Jamie and the rest of the guys never dissapoint. Can't wait for the new album. Although Beautiful Friction is a masterpiece and still one of their best so far...I'm curious to hear what's next.

I felt like I was thirteen again! We had such a fantastic time. So many hits and memory lane was just getting longer and longer. LOL. It was great to see them live-- they had been on my list to see for a very long time. One Thing Leads To Another is still one of my very favorite songs.

The Fixx put on an excellent show! The setlist was chock full of hits and they ended their encore with my favorite song, "Secret Separation". Couldn't have asked for better. This band always delivers and I look forward to seeing them again.

Live Review and Photo Gallery: The Fixx at House of Blues • Chicago

House of Blues, Chicago, IL

Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Live Review and photos by Jeff Elbel

The Fixx visited Chicago’s House of Blues on Tuesday, bringing songs from the band’s first new album in ten years. The British alternative rockers’ eleventh album  Every Five Seconds  succeeds 2012’s critically praised album  Beautiful Friction . Both sets of songs have found the band’s ideas in the 21st century measuring up to radio and MTV hits like “One Thing Leads to Another” from the quintet’s ‘80s heyday.

The show began with a call to action in “A Life Survived.” Singer Cy Curnin’s lyric lamented the wasted potential represented by “weeping by the grave of a life survived, but never lived.” Jamie West-Oram’s chiming and echoed guitar intertwined with Rupert Greenall’s inventive keyboard textures, which ranged from a reedy melodica lead to layers of retro-futuristic synthesizer tones. The claustrophobic “Closer” struck a warning tone against fundamental breakdown in a society combining apathy and nationalism with a refusal to consider different viewpoints.

West-Oram’s guitar rang through the eco-warrior anthem “Driven Out.” It was the night’s first opportunity to witness his spectacular soloing sensibilities, suggesting a fusion of the sounds of Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Nile Rodgers, and Gang of Four’s Andy Gill. The crystalline funk of “Chase the Fire” followed, sparked by the harmonics of dapper, top-hatted bassist Dan K. Brown. The theatrical Curnin mimed a goose step in a protest against fascism during the song’s middle verse.

“There comes a point when you say I’ve had [expletive deleted] enough,” said Curnin when introducing “How Much is Enough.” With an anthemic chorus vocal, “Take What You Want” responded to an atmosphere of selfishness with selflessness, offering a mile to those who would take an inch.

At several points during the evening, Curnin contrasted unrest in the outside world with the oasis of joy found at the band’s shows. “Out on the road, we see happy faces,” he said. “When I turn on the TV, I see miserable faces.” The moody “Less Cities, More Moving People” followed as a gift to faithful Fixxtures, featuring Brown’s taut bassline, drummer Adam Woods’ hypnotic shuffle, and Greenall’s cinematic synthesizers. Curnin ad-libbed during a breakdown, singing, “We’re all refugees of one kind or another. I’ve been a refugee since leaving the womb of my mother.”

The tragic “Cold” described the dead embers of a once-passionate relationship. After lamenting a bitter end, Curnin’s lyric concluded with a sense of wisdom gained, renewed purpose and poise, and hope for better things. “The mother of invention meant for this heart to fly,” he sang stirringly.

Deftly shifting from the delicate and intricate “Beautiful Friction” with West-Oram’s glistening guitar, Woods’ hard-hitting beat propelled the angular existentialism of “Are We Ourselves?” The audience sang along loudly to the song’s familiar chorus.

An energetic performance of “Deeper and Deeper” was the concert’s centerpiece. The song showed the Fixx’s unique sound at its synergistic best, pulling essential character from each player and demonstrating how the band originally leaned on rock and funk during the New Wave era. The song’s nervous tension was underscored by Curnin’s spoken asides. “I used to have a simple life,” he said. “I used to have a peaceful life. What happened to my simple, peaceful life?” West-Oram stepped to the front of the stage for a thrilling solo, thrashing his guitar and coaxing notes that bent and wailed with fury. Curnin emerged afterward in a devilish black mask. “They sweep over you, these dark moods,” he added later, removing the symbolic prop.

A watery spy-movie guitar riff announced “Wake Up,” a timely exhortation for people to shake off complacency and question what they’re told by those in power. “Loosen the grip they have on you,” Curnin had urged moments earlier. “Why do the young ask, while we’re told,” he sang, echoing another familiarly Fixxy sentiment about learning from a new generation as elders prepare to hand over the world.

Following another energetic singalong to “One Thing Leads to Another,” the main set concluded with Cold War classics “Stand or Fall” and “Red Skies.” The 40-year-old songs sounded perhaps a bit too relevant in the current climate of renewed tension between nuclear superpowers. Curnin avoided comments and let these particular songs speak for themselves.

The encore saw the welcome return of “Lonely as a Lighthouse,” a decades-old fan favorite live track that was finally reclaimed for inclusion on  Every Five Seconds . Woods’ steady pulse suggested the strength of a steadfast protector, as West-Oram’s slashing guitar and Curnin’s clarion vocal evoked the isolated figure’s intense emotions and desperate longing. Next came the Zen funk of “Saved by Zero,” featuring another titanic West-Oram guitar solo. The show concluded with an ode to eternal soulmates, “Secret Separation.” “Maybe there’s a lot wrong outside, but there’s a lot right in here tonight,” said Curnin in his parting words, urging the crowd to carry goodwill from the room with them as they left.

Tickets are now available for The Fixx at The Garage !

Regrettably, due to an injury suffered by keyboardist Rupert Greenall during the recent FIXX “Live In 2023 Tour”, the band is forced to postpone the final show of the tour scheduled for 14 December in London.  Although we are a happy to report that Rupert has undergone successful surgery for a severe fracture, he now faces recovery that his doctors say will take several weeks at minimum and he’ll be unable to perform during that time. The new date will now be 21 st  March 2024. All tickets will remain valid for the new show.

Rupert and all of us in The FIXX thank you for the patience, care and concern that you’ve shown throughout this, and we will be back to see you very soon!

(New York, NY) – Alternative rock pioneers The FIXX have just revealed the title and release date of their forthcoming studio album: EVERY FIVE SECONDS is due out June 3 rd via BFD/The Orchard.   The album is produced by Stephen W Tayler (Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, Peter Gabriel) for Chimera Arts (except for “A Life Survived” and “Lonely As A Lighthouse,” which are produced by Nick Jackson) and mastered by Alex Wharton (Paul McCartney, My Bloody Valentine, The Chemical Brothers) at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Of the new album, their first in nearly a decade, lead singer Cy Curnin commented, “Life can either be a series of broken obsessive thoughts or it can be a wonderful mosaic of moments.   EVERY FIVE SECONDS reflects this human paradox. The constant struggle between betterment and bewilderment.”   Click here to access EVERY FIVE SECONDS cover art.   Click here to pre-order EVERY FIVE SECONDS.   Please see below for the track listing.   In addition, The FIXX have made another track from the album available for fans; “Closer” can be accessed here.

The FIXX has been heralded as one of the most innovative bands to come out of the “MTV” era. For four decades, the style and substance of the band has always created a special connection with its audience. The FIXX ’s themes are often complex, introspective and thought-provoking, but not without widespread mass appeal.   The band has garnered three #1 hits, five more in the Top 5 and a dozen which reached the Top 10.   With millions of albums sold worldwide, songs such as “One Thing Leads To Another,” “Red Skies” and “Saved By Zero” remain everyday staples on the playlists of the Rock, AAA and Alternative radio stations that continue to break new acts inspired by the era that The FIXX helped to define.   The FIXX ’s classic lineup remains intact, Cy Curnin (vocals), Jamie West-Oram (guitar), Rupert Greenall (keyboards), Dan K. Brown (bass guitar) and Adam Woods (drums).
