Gold Trip 'best he's been'
For a while it was doubtful whether he would run at all, but in the end, Gold Trip signalled another spring feature could be falling his way after an incredible first-up run at The Valley.
Jamie Lovett of Australian Bloodstock said he was convinced by co-trainer Dave Eustace that last year’s Melbourne Cup winner needed to start despite a track upgrade to a Good 3 early in the program.
“Dave said we’ve got to run him and I’m so glad we did,” Lovett said. “His sectionals will be off the charts, although he’s not screwed down. His action is good, his feet are good.
“I think it’s the best he’s been.”
Gold Trip was out the back in the Bendigo Bank Handicap (2040m) for much of the journey, but he sprinted brilliantly to finish fourth, just one length behind the winner Young Werther.
WATCH: Gold Trip's run at The Valley
For jockey Mark Zahra, the sizzling effort came as something of a relief.
“It was good to see him do something because his trials have been a bit lacklustre,” Zahra said.
“We weren’t sure how he was going to go today with a big weight a and a firm track, but to see him attack the line like that was very impressive. He’s in for a good prep.
“Dave was keen to get him going because you can’t get enough out of him in the trials, so he had to have a start somewhere.
“He performed above expectations.”
Eustace said he was delighted with the eye-catching performance ahead of upcoming G1 assignments.
“He’ll almost certainly go to the Turnbull (Stakes) and then Caulfield Cup third-up,” he said. “He’ll have three weeks until now to the Turnbull and then two weeks to the Caulfield Cup.
“He’s had foot issues in the past but he’s had a very clear run with his feet. He’s pretty pleased with himself as well.”

Melbourne Cup 2022 Results: Top-Weight Gold Trip Beats Emissary, High Emocean Third
Lucy henderson november 1, 2022.
By Lucy Henderson
Trainers Ciaron Maher & David Eustace have run first and third in the 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup results with the stable’s top-weight Gold Trip scoring a historic two length victory over Emissary (2nd) and his Bendigo Cup winning stablemate High Emocean (3rd).
Gold Trip was enormous winning the 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup by two lengths with the 57.5kg top-weight for Maher & Eustace. Photo: Ultimate Racing Photos.
The heaviest-weighted Melbourne Cup winner since the mighty Makybe Diva for her third with 58kg back in 2005, the imported French-bred son of Outstrip was huge with 57.5kg in the 162nd edition of the ‘race that stops a nation’.
“I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet. It’s phenomenal,” co-trainer Maher told Racing.com after his biggest career success.
“I think I said to dad when I was about 12, ‘we’ll go to New Zealand and buy a New Zealand horse and win the Cup.
“There’s been plenty of hurdles since.
“Just such a special moment.”
It had been a long time between drinks for six-year-old Gold Trip who had won just one other race before his triumph in the world’s richest handicap race .
He was a Group 2 winner over 2200m in France back in 2020 and winless until jockey Mark Zahra gave him a perfectly timed ride to salute in the Melbourne Cup 2022 in front of the big crowd at Flemington .
“This time last year I was sitting at home watching Verry Elleegant (win the Melbourne Cup),” Zahra said.
“To come a full year and have redemption…it’s an unbelievable feeling.”
Connections paid big money for the stallion and were forced to be patient after Gold Trip was scratched on the eve of last year’s Cox Plate.
It has been a spring of atonement then for the horse who has now more than rewarded the patience of the Australian Bloodstock ownership group, Gold Trip the first horse in five years to contest the ‘Big 3’ spring majors in Melbourne.
The Melbourne Cup was also the horse’s first look at the two-miles, but co-trainer Eustace said the team were always confident he would see it out.
“We were confident he’d get it,” Eustace said of Gold Trip running out a strong 3200m.
“He didn’t get a shot last year, so I suppose it was sort of redemption for the horse as much as anything.
“He showed he was a top liner.”
Gold Trip became the heaviest weighted Melbourne Cup winner since 2005 with his 2022 success carrying the 57.5kg top-weight to victory. Photo: Ultimate Racing Photos.
Gold Trip ran a terrific second to Durston when run down late by the winner, who carried six kilos less, in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
A luckless, but still eye-catching, ninth behind Godolphin gun Anamoe when dropping back in distance followed in the weight-for-age Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley.
With Durston out of the Melbourne Cup prior to final acceptances, there was no horse to finish in front of Gold Trip in the second leg of the Spring Cups double.
Having travelled off the speed throughout, Zahra had concerns about how his horse would handle the distance and had been hesitant to go too early fearing he would fade late.
“I was really doubtful he’d run 3200 (metres),” Zahra admitted.
“Early I was thinking I was a bit too far back…but I didn’t want to push early and have him die late.
“I was in a three-wide lane that kept improving.
“At the top of the straight I thought ‘right, it’s time to go’. He let rip when I asked him!”
As it turned out, what Zahra had feared happened with the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott -trained Knights Order .
After travelling three-wide throughout, jockey Tim Clark took off early on the autumn’s Sydney Cup winner going to the front with more than 800m left to travel.
The James Ferguson -trained favourite from the UK, Deauville Legend, meanwhile looked in a lovely position fourth approaching the home turn given every chance by three-time Melbourne Cup winning hoop Kerrin McEvoy .
Knights Order, trying to break their hearts, was still leading at the 400m but was quickly run down by those from further back in the field coming with their runs including Gold Trip who charged down the outside.
The eventual Melbourne Cup winner flew straight past the heavily-backed European and into the history books with two lengths to spare on the line over Michael Moroney ‘s Geelong Cup winner Emissary ($26) who was so brave in second with Patrick Moloney in the saddle.
“For me, it’s just a great honour just to be working with these horses and working for Ciaron,” Maher said.
“It’s not lost on me what a privilege it is.
“It’s pretty surreal a the moment.
“We were very very worried the last 100 (metres) with Emissary coming. Thinking it was going to be a repeat of the Caulfield Cup!
“But Mark gave him the most beautiful ride.
“The horse kicked at the right time, and thank god he did.”
Relishing a big feature race placing was also Teo Nugent , fourth in the race last year on Floating Artist for the stable and third this year making up plenty of late ground on the fast-finishing Ocean Park mare High Emocean ($41).
“Really great for Teo as well,” Maher said of their former apprentice on the Melbourne Cup third-placed mare.
“We set a plan for her…fantastic result.”
Three horses walked home in the Melbourne Cup with Numerian (19th), Serptentine (20th) and Camorra (21st), who reportedly didn’t handle the track conditions, all running over 73 lengths off the winner but seeming to pull up without serious injury.
Interpretation from the winning stable failed to finish, but was back in the pre-parade shortly having pulled up okay with his failed run put down to a wind issue.

International Horse Profile: Gold Trip
- by Drew Patchell
- in Articles
- on September 24, 2021
Gold Trip is Cox Plate bound! The top international chance for the 2021 Cox Plate arrives next week in Melbourne and is now a $10 shot or less with most bookies.
Gold Trip ran a very strong 4th in the Arc last year and this year has run 2nd and 3rd in Group 1s over similar distances. The last start 3rd in the Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud was a very valid run from the back.
Best suited to wetter surfaces, this is the horse you want to eye in on if the heavens open on the days leading up to the race. Even on a Good to soft surface, he is respectable as shown by the 2nd behind Mare Australis in the Prix Ganay.
Gold Trip’s racing style is potentially the biggest query for the Moonee Valley track. Ridden mid to back in the field, Gold Trip has little to no tactical speed early so a good barrier draw 3 out to 7 will be vital to the horses chances on the day.
Why exactly does Gold Trip measure up?
On Timeform ratings in the past 4 Group 1 events Gold Trip has competed in, ratings of 122, 120, 122 and 118+ were the results with 3rd/2nd/4th and 3rd the finishing positions for the horse. With less international competition this year and no Winx, Gold Trip becomes a factor at the ratings.
What it takes to win or place in the Cox Plate the past three years?
2020 Cox Plate – (123 Timeform Rating won the race – 122 prior to race for the horse) 1st – Sir Dragonet – Got a genuine tempo and soft track – previous best 122+ timeform on soft. All perfect conditions on day. Ran 123 to win. 2nd – Armory – Ran 122+ Timeform rating in previous G1 run and repeated that figure with 122 for second. 3rd – Russian Camelot – Best in past seen over slightly shorter distances. Ran to 121 Timeform Rating on the day. Had previously ran 124 in the Underwood on a soft track.
2019 Cox Plate – (124 Timeform Rating won the race – 125+ prior to race for the horse) 1st – Lys Gracieux – Won like a good thing going away from them. Tempo was solid. Run prior was 124 Timeform Rating. Ran 125+ on the day. Next start in Japan ran 128! Class horse. 2nd – Castelvecchio – Ran a clear career peak here of 124 Timeform rating. Won a G1 since running 120. 3rd – Te Akau Shark – Disappointed on the day – 2000m too far for horses best. Ran 119 on the day coming off a 126 Timeform rating prior and 126+ next start after that both those over 1600m.
2018 Cox Plate – (129+ Timeform Rating won the race – 134 prior to race for the horse) 1st – Winx – Didn’t need to run up to her best to win but had to improve on last start win. Did so impressively going up to 129+ Timeform Rating on the day from 123+ run prior. Just had to run to best to win. 2nd – Benbatl – Would have won any other year without Winx in the race. Came in with 129 Timeform rating and ran to 129! Ran 124 since. Was a career peak along with Dubai Turf win over 3l+ back in March of 2018. 3rd – Humidor – Beaten 4.75L into 3rd – you take that as an owner. Ran 122 Timeform on the day. Previous best 129 previous year behind Winx. Best since that 129 was this 123 and never improved. Previous best behind that was 125+. Peaked in 2017.

Melbourne Cup 2022: Field, horses, form guide and finishing order
Former French galloper Gold Trip has won the Melbourne Cup, giving jockey Mark Zahra and trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace their first wins in the great race. Here is the final finishing order.
$21: 1st. Gold Trip
6yo stallion (France) | Barrier 14 | 57.5kg
Jockey: Mark Zahra | Trainers: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
This former French galloper is racing in great heart but just can't quite crack it for a maiden win in Australia.
He looked all over the winner in the Caulfield Cup (2,400m) but was ambushed on the line by Durston to finish a narrow second, while he had little luck backing up in the last week's Cox Plate (2,040m) when ninth.
That latest run will toughen him up for Tuesday's race and he'll relish the expected soft track, although he does have topweight of 57.5kg to contend with.
$21: 18th. Duais
5yo mare (Australia) | Barrier 10 | 55.5kg
Jockey: Hugh Bowman | Trainer: Edward Cummings
This classy mare was an early Cup favourite heading into the spring, but her results of late haven't matched dominant wins in the Australian Cup (2,000m) and Tancred Stakes (2,400m) in March.
Duais appeared to have every chance when eighth to Smokin' Romans in the Turnbull Stakes (2,000m) here at Flemington, before she ran good closing splits after getting a long way back in the Caulfield Cup (2,400m) to finish eighth.
Her connections will be hoping the track isn't too wet on Tuesday.
Mares don't have the greatest strike rate in the Cup (38 have run since 2005 and last year's winner, Verry Elleegant , was the only one to have finished top three).
$18: 9th. Knight's Order
8yo gelding (Ireland) | Barrier 24 | 55.5kg
Jockey: Tim Clark | Trainers: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott
This former European is expected to run a much better race on Tuesday than his 19th at 100-1 in last year's Cup behind Verry Elleegant .
Since then he's added a Sydney Cup (3,200m) victory (defeating the likes of Daqiansweet Junior and Stockman ) to his record, as well as a third in last month's Caulfield Cup (2,400m) behind Durston .
Knights Order will race up on the speed and has plenty of stamina to see out the 3,200m journey, plus the rain-affected track will be in his favour.
$9.50: 16th. Montefilia
5yo mare (Australia) | Barrier 11 | 55.5kg
Jockey: Jason Collett | Trainer: David Payne
Montefilia is a four-time Group One winner that's raced at the highest level throughout her career and her class will carry her a long way in a first attempt at 3,200m.
She has placed fourth in the past two Caulfield Cups (2,400m), and her powerful finish behind Durston a fortnight ago gives the impression that she'll relish the marathon journey on Tuesday.
She is, however, carrying a hefty weight compared to most mares in recent years, and the females don't boast a great Cup strike rate (38 have run since 2005 and last year's winner, Verry Elleegant , was the only one to have finished top three).
$61: 19th. Numerian
7yo gelding (Ireland) | Barrier 7 | 55.5kg
Jockey: Tommy Berry | Trainer: Annabel Neasham
This well-credentialed ex-European galloper has recorded two victories since arriving in Australia last year, highlighted by Brisbane's rich Q22 (2,200m) in June.
The first Cup runner for rising star of the training ranks Annabel Neasham , Numerian lines up following a close fifth in the Caulfield Cup (2,400m) behind Durston .
He settled well near the lead that day and should again on Tuesday, but his price in the betting reflects doubts over his ability to run a strong 3,200m.
$12: 12th. Without A Fight
6yo gelding (Ireland) | Barrier 18 | 55.5kg
Jockey: William Buick | Trainers: Simon & Ed Crisford
One of the leading contenders among the overseas brigade, Without A Fight boasts a consistent career record that includes two wins over 2,787m in England this year.
He's reportedly settled well since arriving in Australia and has met with solid support in the betting thanks to having form on wet ground, an in-form stable and a world-class jockey.
One thing to note is that he's been racing in small fields recently so it will be interesting to see how he handles having 20-plus challengers on Tuesday.
$41: 21st. Camorra
6yo gelding (Ireland) | Barrier 17 | 55kg
Jockey: Ben Melham | Trainers: Ben & JD Hayes
Camorra put together a fair record in Ireland before being bought by Australian connections on the back of a victory in the Curragh Cup (2,816m) in June.
His trainers Ben and JD Hayes are prepared to overlook his latest start; a well-beaten eighth in the Irish St Leger (2,816m) when he was unwanted in the betting behind Europe's champion stayer Kyprios .
The brothers will be hoping to emulate their father David ( Jeune 1994) and grandfather Colin ( At Talaq 1986, Beldale Ball 1980) as Cup-winning trainers.
$4.40 fav: 4th. Deauville Legend
4yo gelding (Ireland) | Barrier 9 | 55kg
Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy | Trainer: James Ferguson
The formula of bringing well-performed Northern Hemisphere three-year-olds to Australia for the Cup has proven successful in recent times, and it's easy to see why Deauville Legend has been at the top of betting for some time.
He finished ahead of Cup rival Hoo Ya Mal over 2,412m two runs ago, and then was impressive winning the Great Voltigeur Stakes (2,385m) defeating El Bodegon , which came out a week ago and ran third to Anamoe in the Cox Plate (2,040m).
Deauville Legend , however, won't have the same weight advantage in the Cup as successful European three-year-olds like Rekindling (1st, 2017), Cross Counter (1st, 2018), Il Paradiso (3rd, 2019) and Tiger Moth (2nd, 2020).
At just his eighth race start, he'll be ridden by three-time Cup winner Kerrin McEvoy ( Brew 2000, Almandin 2016, Cross Counter 2018).
$16: 8th. Stockman
6yo gelding (New Zealand) | Barrier 2 | 54kg
Jockey: Sam Clipperton | Trainer: Joe Pride
Stockman boasts a stout staying pedigree and tuned up nicely for the Cup with a strong-finishing eighth over an unsuitable 2,000m of the Rosehill Cup on Saturday.
Before that he scored a dominant win, albeit against a weaker field than he'll face on Tuesday, in the St Leger (2,600m) in Sydney.
His lone start at 3,200m was a forgivable well-beaten seventh behind Knights Order in the Sydney Cup (3,200m), when many runners failed on a bottomless wet track.
$21: 10th. Vow And Declare
7yo gelding (Australia) | Barrier 4 | 54kg
Jockey: Blake Shinn | Trainer: Danny O'Brien
The Cup champion of three years ago is back for a third tilt at the great race after also finishing 18th in 2020.
Even though Vow And Declare has gone winless since that famous day in 2019, he's been showing glimpses of his old form in four runs since returning from injury this spring.
He was far from disgraced when sixth, beaten 2 lengths, in the Caulfield Cup (2,400m) behind Durston , and expect him to produce another honest effort on Tuesday.
$31: 15th. Young Werther
5yo gelding (New Zealand) | Barrier 21 | 54kg
Jockey: Damian Lane | Trainer: Danny O'Brien
Don't be alarmed by the fact that Young Werther has only won one race (his first career start in September 2020) — he's been racing competitively at the highest level ever since.
Injury sidelined him for the better part of a year before he returned this spring with a couple of promising runs, including a close third to Smokin' Romans in the Turnbull Stakes (2,000m).
Forget his 10th in the Cox Plate (2,040m) last start when he battled away fairly behind the champion Anamoe — Young Werther will relish being back on the wide expanses of his home track Flemington.
$13: 11th. Hoo Ya Mal
4yo stallion (Great Britain) | Barrier 15 | 53.5kg
Jockey: Craig Williams | Trainers: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott
Hoo Ya Mal was an expensive purchase for Australian connections after finishing second at 150-1 in this year's English Derby (2,420m), and he's out to emulate Rekindling (2017) and Cross Counter (2018) as Northern Hemisphere three-year-olds to win the Cup.
A two-time race winner, he disappointed at his latest start when eighth in the English St Leger (2,922m), and his former trainer conceded at the time that Hoo Ya Mal "looked a bit weak" over the distance on very soft ground.
That doesn't bode well if there's a wet track for the Cup, but Gai Waterhouse has kept him up to the mark since arriving Down Under and remains hopeful of a forward showing on Tuesday.
$31: 20th. Serpentine
6yo gelding (Ireland) | Barrier 23 | 53.5kg
Jockey: John Allen | Trainer: Robert Hickmott
The form shown by this Irish import in his first four Australian runs had been a far cry from his dramatic victory in the 2020 English Derby (2,420m).
But a gear change and a free-striding ride saw Serpentine produce a much better effort to finish second in Saturday's Archer Stakes (2,500m) and secure a spot in the Cup.
Horses backing up from Saturday often run well in the Cup, and Serpentine offers owner Lloyd Williams his lone chance this year for an eighth Cup victory following the scratching of stablemate Point Nepean .
$61: 6th. Daqiansweet Junior
5yo gelding (New Zealand) | Barrier 13 | 53kg
Jockey: Daniel Moor | Trainer: Phillip Stokes
Daqiansweet (pronounced dish-arn-sweet ) Junior did his early racing in New Zealand before joining the Phillip Stokes stable and stringing a few wins together last summer as he stepped up in distance.
The five-year-old is proven at the Cup distance of 3,200m having won the Adelaide Cup in March and finishing third to Knights Order in the Sydney Cup.
Although not beaten far, Daqiansweet Junior hasn't finished better than seventh at his three runs this spring, with Stokes preparing the horse with the sole aim of peaking on Tuesday.
$71: 14th. Grand Promenade
7yo gelding (Great Britain) | Barrier 1 | 53kg
Jockey: Harry Coffey | Trainers: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
Grand Promenade ran a bold sixth in last year's Cup behind Verry Elleegant , but his lead-up form this time round is not as strong on paper.
He was expected to run a better race than his ninth in the Herbert Power (2,400m), and the heavy track was against him last start in the Moonee Valley Cup (2,500m) in which he finished fourth and eight lengths behind Cup rival Lunar Flare .
Offering a second Cup ride for Harry Coffey , Grand Promenade is one of five horses lining up in the race for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace .
$61: 11th. Arapaho
6yo gelding (France) | Barrier 19 | 52.5kg
Jockey: Rachel King | Trainer: Bjorn Baker
This former French galloper took a while to hit his straps after landing in Australia, and it's been racing over longer distances that seems to have brought the best out of Arapaho in recent months.
Victory in the Premier's Cup (2,000m) in Sydney was followed by placings in the Tatts Cup (2,400m) and Newcastle Cup (2,300m), where he finished behind eventual Caulfield Cup winner Durston .
Arapaho then was no match for Stockman when second in the St Leger (2,600m) in Sydney.
The step up again to 3,200m is an unknown, although he does perform well on wet tracks.
$26: 2nd. Emissary
6yo gelding (Great Britain) | Barrier 3 | 51.5kg
Jockey: Patrick Moloney | Trainer: Michael Moroney
Emissary worked his way into the Cup field on the back of strong-finishing win in the Geelong Cup (2,400m), which has proven to be a handy form line for the Melbourne Cup in recent times — Media Puzzle (2002), Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011) did the double.
That effort was his second win this spring but a turnaround from his previous eighth in the Herbert Power Stakes (2,400m) at Caulfield.
The form from Emissary 's Geelong win was franked when runner-up that day, Surefire , won Saturday's Archer Stakes (2,500m), defeating Serpentine .
The step up to 3,200m on Tuesday is an unknown for the former European galloper, however trainer Michael Moroney knows what it takes to win the Cup, having claimed victory in 2000 with Brew .
Scratched: . Lunar Flare
7yo mare (Australia) | Barrier 12 | 51.5kg
Jockey: Michael Dee | Trainer: Grahame Begg
UPDATE: THIS HORSE HAS BEEN SCRATCHED
Sired by Cup 2013 winner Fiorente , Lunar Flare has proved herself to be a strong stayer in the past season or so and booked her spot in Tuesday's race through the win-and-you're-in Bart Cummings (2,500m) here at Flemington on October 1.
She was no match for Francesco Guardi when second in last week's Moonee Valley Cup (2,500m), but he won't be there on Tuesday and she finished well in front of her other rivals that day.
Remarkably, Lunar Flare is the first Cup runner for top trainer Grahame Begg and will be ridden by Saturday's Derby-winning jockey Michael Dee .
While she's not hopeless on soft tracks, she doesn't want it too wet either.
$17: 7th. Smokin' Romans
6yo gelding (New Zealand) | Barrier 16 | 51.5kg
Jockey: Jamie Kah | Trainers: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
Smokin' Romans is a horse that keeps getting better with age, rising through the ranks to score at the highest level, albeit somewhat of a surprise, in the Turnbull Stakes (2,000m) this spring.
That win saw him start favourite in the Caulfield Cup (2,400m), but not everything went right for star jockey Jamie Kah that day so she'll be out to make amends on Tuesday.
Don't be surprised of a bold showing from Smokin' Romans , who stays down in the weights, has a liking of Flemington and an ability to handle wet tracks.
$51: 17th. Tralee Rose
6yo mare (New Zealand) | Barrier 22 | 51.5kg
Jockey: Dean Yendall | Trainer: Symon Wilde
Tralee Rose was injured when running ninth in last year's Cup and wasn't seen at the races until she resumed in August.
But it hasn't been a successful return so far, with the mare finishing last in her first two runs back and then 13th in the Caulfield Cup (2,400m) behind Durston .
Connections are hoping that a tweak in her training will turn things around and get her showing glimpses of the form that saw her win last year's Geelong Cup (2,400m).
Scratched: . Point Nepean
5yo stallion (Ireland) | Barrier 20 | 51kg
Jockey: Wayne Lordan | Trainer: Robert Hickmott
The past two runs by Point Nepean have certainly taken the shine off his reputation as an emerging staying talent, highlighted by a win in the Andrew Ramsden (2,800m) in May that booked his spot in the Cup.
But his two runs this spring were below par on face value, the most recent being 14th in the Herbert Power Stakes (2,400m).
While he has to be taken on trust, Point Nepean 's camp remains confident he can turn things around and peak for his grand final and deliver owner Lloyd Williams an eighth Cup trophy.
$41: 3rd. High Emocean
6yo mare (New Zealand) | Barrier 8 | 50kg
Jockey: Teo Nugent | Trainers: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
High Emocean gets into the Cup field due to a high attrition rate among other contenders, yet she still boasts two wins in her past three starts.
She ploughed her way through a heavy track on Wednesday to win the Bendigo Cup (2,400m); before that she finished on the heels of Lunar Flare in the Bart Cummings (2,500m).
This is certainly a much tougher assignment, which is reflected in her odds, but High Emocean does have good stamina and races well on wet tracks.
$51: Failed to finish. Interpretation
5yo stallion (Ireland) | Barrier 6 | 50kg
Jockey: Craig Newitt | Trainers: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
This European import scraped into the Cup field due to a high attrition rate among other contenders.
Interpretation boasts a staying pedigree but has let the punters down a couple of times this spring, although he's been far from disgraced.
His most recent starts produced a third behind Lunar Flare in the Bart Cummings (2,500m) here at Flemington and sixth behind Emissary in the Geelong Cup (2,400m).
$8: 5th. Realm Of Flowers
6yo mare (Australia) | Barrier 5 | 50kg
Jockey: Damien Thornton | Trainers: Anthony & Sam Freedman
It's been almost 18 months since her last victory, but Realm Of Flowers is among the better chances lining up on Tuesday.
She's shown talent as a stayer throughout her career and missed a run in last year's Cup through injury.
The six-year-old comes into the Cup after placings in the Tatts Cup (2,400m) and the Metropolitan (2,400m), both on wet tracks in Sydney.
Realm Of Flowers appreciates having her runs spaced and expect her to be strong at the end of the 3,200m.

Caulfield Cup 2023 final field and barrier draw: Trainer Ciaron Maher ‘very happy’ with Gold Trip
Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip is no certainty to run in the Caulfield Cup despite connections paying a hefty entry fee. See the final field and barrier draw.

J-Mac wins on first four rides at the Sunshine Coast
Favourite Gold Trip has drawn barrier 11 in the $5m Group 1 Caulfield Cup for the second year in a row.
Gold Trip ’s place in the field was confirmed three hours before the draw after talks between trainer Ciaron Maher and owners of the Melbourne Cup and Turnbull Stakes winner.
Maher has left the door ajar to withdraw Gold Trip should the Caulfield surface become too dry for the star spring majors player.
“We’ll see how the track presents on Saturday and we’re certainly preparing him to take his place,” Maher said.
• Suspension rules Nash Rawiller out of Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate
“You probably don’t want to draw too well with him but I think he’s fine and we couldn’t be happier with his preparation … he’s a horse that finds a rhythm.
“He drew 11 in this race last year, he drew wide in the Melbourne Cup and he drew wide in the Turnbull … he just finds a spot and runs into the race. Hopefully it happens as simply as that on Saturday.”
Deliberations on Tuesday and Wednesday centred on track conditions on Saturday, along with the Caulfield Cup ramifications on Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup ambitions.
Is this the Caulfield Cup winner? Soulcombe, a $5 equal favourite, gallops at Caulfield this morning ahead of the $5 million classic on Saturday. Trainer Chris Waller is predicting "something special" STORY: https://t.co/nbGbEO15aY pic.twitter.com/LymKN8PZQM — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) October 17, 2023
“(Cox Plate is) definitely part of the package, it’s what made this decision hard,” Maher said.
“It’s more about looking after him and having him right … the horse has carried weight as a rule, (it‘s the) Caulfield Cup, he was good in it last year.“
Maher and co-trainer David Eustace will saddle up to four runners in the race on Saturday, with Right You Are , Duke De Sessa and first emergency United Nations drawn 13, 14 and 17 respectively.
Second favourite Soulcombe , one of three for trainer Chris Waller, has barrier six – the same alley victorious Durston used last year for the powerhouse stable.
Montefilia , to be ridden by Blake Shinn now after Sydney-based jockey Nash Rawiller was suspended on Wednesday , has gate nine while Francesco Guardi must navigate barrier 15.
Soulcombe (15 per cent) and Gold Trip (13 per cent) account for almost a third of win wagers with TAB on the Caulfield Cup.
• Japanese raider ‘here to win’ Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup
The bookmaker received a bet of $7000/$7500 each-way on Gold Trip on Wednesday.
One-time Caulfield Cup favourite Without A Fight, trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman has no excuses from barrier seven with Mark Zahra aboard.
Nonconformist, with Harry Coffey aboard, fared the worst with barrier 19.
The 2021 Caulfield Cup runner-up will jump from barrier 18 once the field is finalised.
“A little bit of a kick in the guts, but it is what it is,” Coffey said.

Having done the bullocking work outside the leader and being headed in the straight, Victorian gelding Magnaspin found a second wind to fight back and win The Coast at Newcastle.
It had been a long time between drinks for Semillion but the gelding made full use of a good draw to score an all-the-way win in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Newcastle.
McDonald and wife Katie welcomed their second daughter, Mia, into the world during the week and backed it up with riding winners on his first four rides on Saturday.

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Bookmakers have been betting on the Melbourne Cup since the conclusion of last year’s race – so which horse has been the biggest firmer ahead of the 163rd edition of Tuesday’s great race?

The Willie Mullins-trained international raider was a $51 chance when originally priced for the Melbourne Cup, firming into $3.60 when acceptances for the race were declared on Saturday, and since drawing barrier 3, he has firmed again and is trading at $3.50 on Sunday morning.
Vauban accounts for a whopping 17 per cent of TAB’s hold on the Melbourne Cup and 25 per cent of investments since the barrier draw.
Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip is another significant firmer.
He was quoted as the $18 favourite in the TAB market on November 2 last year but he is now the clear second pick in betting at $5.
Gold Trip accounts for nine per cent of the TAB’s book overall and since the barrier draw.
The biggest firmer from the opening market is Herbert Power Stakes winner Military Mission which opened a $201 chance.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained galloper was a $41 chance after the field was declared and then firmed again into $34 when drawing barrier five.
The Gai Waterhouse factor has kicked in since the barrier draw with Military Mission’s name on four per cent of investments.
The Caulfield Cup winner Without A Fight was installed as a $26 chance when he entered the market but he eased from $7.50 to $8 after drawing barrier 16, then punters have rallied for the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained galloper and he has firmed back into $7.
The second most popular horse since the barrier draw has been the Chris Waller-trained Soulcombe.
He accounts for 11 per cent of the wagering giant’s book since Saturday’s barrier draw after firming in from a final field quote of $12 to $10.
More Coverage
Three horses at or around the $21 mark that have been well fancied since the draw, Japanese raider Breakup, Vauban’s stablemate Absurde and 2019 winner and eight-year-old veteran Vow And Declare.
Breakup has been $19 into $17 and takes up six per cent of the TAB fixed odds hold since the barrier draw while Absurde has stayed at $21 but has received five per cent of investments with Vow And Declare accounts for four per cent of bets and is a $26 chance.
