Top Gear: Series 21, Episode 7 – Burma Special (2/2)
- The boys continue to battle their way across Burma.
- They head towards Thailand for their final challenge – to build a bridge over the River Kwai.
Episode Guide
After attending a party in the Shan State, the presenters reach what they believe is the River Kwai, where they are challenged with building a bridge over the river, and are not allowed to go home until all three lorries have driven over it. The next morning, they realize the river is wider than they had imagined. James plots a bridge meanwhile Hammond goes into town looking for supplies and Jeremy goes into town looking for food and other workers. Jeremy gets workers and brings back a large crane which eventually fails and tips over destroying a part of the bridge, nearly killing James in the process. Halfway through construction, Jeremy discovers that the river is actually River Kok. In the end the bridge is completed and each of the vehicles are driven over it, completing the challenge. During the end credits, each member of the cast and crew’s first name was credited as “Sir Alec”, in homage to Sir Alec Guinness, who starred in the movie, The Bridge on the River Kwai .

What Ever Happened To Top Gearβs Bridge From The Burma Special?
2014 Top Gear was perfection. It featured the McLaren P1 , horny horses, and the Burma Special episode. But however much we liked this episode, thereβs one aspect of it that weβve never discussed. What happened to that bridge they built?
Driving three lorries, Clarkson, Hammond and May were following the structure of the book,Β Bridge Over The River Kwai. And just like in the book, they eventually go to a river which they had to cross. It was no surprise that somewhere in their travels theyβd gone wrong and were in fact not at the famous River Kwai, but instead the River Kok, which flows from Burma to the East towards Mueang Chiang Rai in Thailand. Yep, they were a few hundred miles out.
Despite this, they got to building the bridge.
After a few technical difficulties, including Jeremy tipping over a crane and nearly killing James, then tipping a just woken up James out of his tent and into the river, they eventually had something built that resembled a bridge.
It worked, but there were a couple of problems. One, a comment Clarkson made about the bridge became viral after he used a racial slur in a joke and caused quite a stir. Two, well, they had to dismantle it afterwards despite it being strong enough to cross.
Someone on Reddit emailed the campsite in which the trio were staying throughout that special episode, and they replied with all the information we needed. This was their reply:
Hi, Thanks for this. You are correct and they did stay with us. Indeed I found the location for them and we organized all the logistics. Unfortunately, the bridge was then taken down after the filming even though we asked for it to remain in place as it was an excellent facility for the local people. The bridge was not built over the Kok, but over the Fang River which flows into the Kok, for a number of reasons. Best wishes,
What a shame that this masterfully(ish) built bridge had to be taken down. At least weβve still got the special to remember it. And the massive backlash that Clarkson received, of course.

Top gear: the burma special.
Directed by Kit Lynch-Robinson
In this special Clarkson, Hammond and May donβt just buy three knackered old lorries and drive miles through the beautiful landscapes of Burma. Oh dear no. They actually have to use their lorries to do something useful. They have to build a real, use able bridge over the River Kwai. On their way to the river they almost bring down Burmaβs power supply, encounter the worldβs least relaxing truck stop, race around the streets of a deserted capital, saddle up a trio of unhelpful horses and attend a completely deranged party.

For a long time I've had Vietnam and Bolivia as my favourite specials, but this one might just have them beat. The longest one, but it's not boring for even a second. Lorry drag race, an otherworldly beautiful country, prime iconic shenanigans between the trio, and at the end of the trip, you get a bonus ridiculous bridge-building special. Plus, Hammond REVERSES INTO THE SPORTS LORRY shortly after falling off a horse... There's technically no cars for him to flip in this one, so clearly he had to diversify his crash portfolio. I respect the innovation.

every english man between the ages of 18-24 has had their personality partially shaped by watching an excessive amount of top gear reruns on Dave. if a man claims this is not the case they're either: a liar, flamboyantly camp, or incredibly boring

As the second part of the Burma Special, the Top Gear team continues on their daring journey across Myanmar, or Burma, with the aim of reaching the river wherein their chosen means of transportation, three decrepit trucks, are to be taken by barge back to their starting point in Thailand. But with the country's troubled political climate, the trip proves to be more challenging than they initially thought.
As the journey continues, the three truck drivers face endless problems, from rough terrain to various mechanical failures. There are also cultural challenges to deal with as they make their way through remote tribal areas while dodging the country's military regime.
The trio's specially-prepared trucks are hardly up to the challenge, with one near-collapse requiring the replacement of its drive shaft, while another's electrical system barely avoids detonating in a spectacular ball of fire. While hitching a ride on dredging barges, the team faces danger from various boats and crafts that are forced to share the same, narrow waterways.
Despite the challenges, the hosts remain in high spirits, enjoying the unexpected experiences and encounters that come their way. Along the way, they have the chance to sample some of the local cuisine and view some of the stunning landscapes and vistas of Myanmar, including stunning pagodas, bustling markets, and remote villages.
As the special draws to a close, the trio is finally pitted in a race against themselves before bidding farewell to their trucks, the land they had crossed almost end-to-end and the locals they meet along the way.
Featuring the same great humor, daring challenges, and stunning visuals that Top Gear fans have come to know and love, this episode of the Burma Special is a riveting, action-packed adventure that delivers non-stop thrills and laughs.
