Make your own way to Whitehaven, an attractive quiet coastal town with a redeveloped harbour. This used to be a Roman port and became one of the busiest in England with trade links to America from the 1600s, coal and iron production, as well as dubious links with the slave trade. Whitehaven is also the only place in England to be invaded by the young USA in 1778, and parts of the town were set on fire. All this is explained in the modern quayside museum. You can have a relaxing stroll along the seaside from the museum to visit old mining sites with memorials to what was once a busy industrial area. Mining seams went long distances out into the Irish Sea. Accommodation : Your accommodation is situated just a few minutes’ walk from Whitehaven town centre and the waterfront. It is a fine example of a late Victorian townhouse that has been transformed into an elegant bed & breakfast offering all modern amenities whilst retaining its original features. Otherwise you will be staying in a centrally located small hotel.
After breakfast, collect hire bikes and catch your prebooked taxi van to Ravenglass, which is to the south of Whitehaven. Ravensglass is an interesting little coastal village and you may wish to lock your bikes and allow approx 2 hours return, to take the heritage Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway for a steam excursion into the Lake District.
Hadrian’s Cycleway begins at the Glannaventa Roman Bath House, about 500m from the village. The route passes Ravenglass station and crosses the estuary on the railway bridge. From here you will cycle on mainly quiet roads and off-road paths through the villages of Holmrook, Drigg and Seascale, then past Sellafield Nuclear Plant before turning away from the coast towards the small town of Egremont. Further on you join the Sea to Sea (C2C) Route 71, which takes you into Whitehaven.
Head north passing through Workington. This is an ancient market town, which in its post industrial and mining malaise has become the main centre for shopping in West Cumbria. From here you are on to another old Roman town: Maryport which has an interesting aquarium. Just to the north is the Senhouse Roman Museum, dramatically sited on cliffs overlooking the Solway Firth and set next to a Roman fort. Climb the observation tower for a fabulous view of the site. Continue cycling along to Silloth a classic, unspoilt English seaside town on the Solway coast. It has an extensive town green in its centre, and on its long promenade you can go for a lovely walk taking in the the majestic Solway Firth and views across the water to Scotland.
Accommodation : A beautifully restored Victorian townhouse overlooking the idyllic Solway Coast.
Rolling out from Silloth your attention turns to the East as you turn and head around the splendid Solway Firth, which is all that separates you from Scotland. On the Cumbrian side, much of the coastline is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the muds and sands make this a major coastal bird area. The minor roads head around the marshes before winding west then back east via the village of Bowness on Solway. This is at the western end of Hadrian's Wall and is marked by a pavilion on the small coastal cliff. The Wall originally was made of mud in this area and not much survives. However, the village is situated on the site of the Roman fort called Maia, which was the second largest on Hadrian's Wall. You then cycle through Port Carlisle, which sounds big but is only a tiny place. It was built in 1819 to service a canal link to take goods to Carlisle Basin. The canal was closed in 1853 and Port Carlisle silted up. From here you briefly meet the River Eden before pedalling into Carlisle: a border city that has changed nationality a few times through its turbulent history. If you have time, it is worth visiting the castle and museum, otherwise take a walk through the Cathedral.
Accommodation : Stay in a small 3* AA-graded hotel that was built in the 1850's with its foundations literally on Hadrian's Wall.
After Carlisle, ascend out of the Eden Valley and head into the Pennines, named by the Romans after the Apennine Mountains in Italy. Mostly you will be cycling gentle hills although there are a couple of steep ones. On the way you could have a break in Bampton. Or after about 15 miles you can visit The Priory, church and café at Lanercost, a useful stop before the route climbs up for the first views of Hadrian’s Wall. You then cycle alongside the wall for the next three miles or so, with views over the Irthing Valley to the south. Cycling past Banks with various remains of wall turrets and signalling stations, you arrive at the large site of the Roman fort at Birdoswald with its tea shop. The route then descends to cross the River Irthing near Gilsand and on through Greenhead with the option to visit the ruins of Thirlwell Castle on the way. From here, a new traffic-free cycle path runs beside the railway line, get ready for the steepest hill on the whole route up to Greenhead Bank. As a reward, visit the Roman Army Museum at the top (tip: buy a combined ticket, for entry into Vindolanda tomorrow as well). It's time for a descent, and this ride takes you into bustling Haltwhistle, claimed to be the most central town to the British isles and your final stop for today.
Accommodation : An elegant Victorian vicarage with spacious guestrooms and high ceilings standing in 2 acres of award winning gardens on the southern edge of Haltwhistle.
Today is a shorter bike ride, not only because it is hilly but so that you can take in the museum sites along the way. Seven miles after Haltwhistle, there is a steep ascent from Bardon Mill back towards Hadrian’s Wall. You could opt to take a short diversion to the pub and the Northumberland National Park visitor centre at Once/Twice Brewed. Otherwise it is straight on to the museum remains at Vindolanda - the most impressive site along Hadrian’s Wall. This remote outpost of the Roman Empire has been extensively excavated and a large number of relics are housed in the newly renovated museum.
Past Vindolana, the road is roughly surfaced and after 1/2 a mile of climbing, you reach the highest point of Hadrian’s Cycleway. Now you have 6 exhilarating miles of descending on a largely straight road taking you to the banks of the River Tyne. The route will now follow the river closely all the way to the North Sea, but first you arrive at the busy market town called Hexham. Probably the most picturesque town on the trip, it has abbey ruins with a Saxon crypt which dominate the town centre.
Accommodation : An ideally situated B&B in a quiet residential area in the centre of Hexham, only 3 mins from the Abbey and market place in the historic town. It is elegantly decorated and furnished with antiques in keeping with its Victorian architecture.
Leaving Hexham having crossed the River Tyne, it’s not far to Corbridge. This is a smaller, attractive town, uniform in its stone buildings and slate roofs. Continuing on cycling from Prudhoe to Tynemouth, the route is almost entirely traffic-free, following the north bank of the River Tyne. The cycle route glides serenely into town, sometimes green, sometimes built-up, but always interesting. First come 7 miles of quiet lanes from Corbridge to Ovingham. Then this section of Hadrian's Cycleway briefly crosses the Tyne on a rickety road bridge to join the Wylam Waggonway – a tramroad dating from the 1740s. The way gets busier but you soon arrive at Newcastle’s riverside with seven bridges in the space of a mile. The newest, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, is reserved for cyclists and walkers. Staying on the north bank you now climb above the river onto a railway path. There are dramatic views back down to the river and the site of the old Swan Hunter shipyard. Cycle around the rather built-up riverside district passing the last Roman fort museum at Segendunm. Cross the river on the ferry and cycle the last mile to Arbeia South Shields Roman Fort, the official end of Hadrian's Cycleway.
From here you retrace your cycle back to the ferry and make your way into Tynemouth to drop off your bikes and check in to your accommodation. You can celebrate your achievement in local style with fish, chips and a pint!
Accommodation : We have selected two attractive guesthouses in the centre of Tynemouth, close to the amenities in the town.
Depart from Tynemouth. There is a convenient metro train to Newcastle Central Station from where you can join the national rail network.
The hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts on this cycle tour along Hadrian's Wall are family-run, clean and comfortable (ranging from 2-4 stars), and provide access to local living thanks to your hosts. The hospitality is generous and their local knowledge of northern England is invaluable. Where possible, we have chosen locations that add to your experience.

Great rides: hadrian's wall.
Not many days start with a mug of coffee made on the camping stove, a peanut chocolate bar and the odd scone, but they usually turn out pretty well – or at least well fuelled! So began the final day of my cycle along Hadrian’s Wall. In 2016, I had decided to circumnavigate the edges of the Roman Empire by bike with a trip from the Dutch coast to Vienna along the Rhine and Danube, so this section along Hadrian's Wall would see me across what formed the northern boundary of the Roman world in the UK for a couple of centuries.
As the morning sun evaporated the last of the night’s rain from my tent, I felt excited for the day’s cycling, but also increasingly like I did not want the trip to end. Over the previous few days, I had pedalled from Arbeia Roman fort at South Shields, through Newcastle, past the stonework of the Wall itself and several Roman forts and milecastles, to Carlisle.
After a short train ride to the southern tip of the route at Ravenglass, I had made my way north along the Cumbrian coast to join a small team undertaking archaeological fieldwork at Beckfoot. Finally, there I was, drying off the tent in the morning sun, before the last leg to Carlisle again, to finish my slightly circuitous route.
My circumnavigation of the former edge of the Empire started primarily as a way of visiting Roman sites sequentially within their geographic contexts. Penny Coombe
As well as being an avid cyclist, I am an archaeology PhD student, working on a thesis about Roman sculpture in Britain and Germany. Interested in cultural boundaries, my circumnavigation of the former edge of the Empire started primarily as a way of visiting Roman sites sequentially within their geographic contexts.
A secondary research objective emerged in the course of the Rhine/Danube ride: that of appreciating modern cultural change across a large area through sampling delicious, regional baked goods, from northern Dutch apple cake, to the ‘Donauwelle’ incorporating cherries from the German Black Forest, and apricot-heavy treats in the Austrian Wachau.
As the biographer of Emperor Hadrian wrote, he ‘was the first to build a wall, 80 miles long, to separate the Romans from the barbarians.’ The purpose of Hadrian’s Wall has long been debated by archaeologists and historians: was it purely defensive, packed with troops at mile intervals, to protect the Roman world from raids by tribes to the north? A statement of dominance by an imperial power? A functional boundary at which taxes were levied? A mixture of all of these and more? As I panted up to the highest point of the route near Haltwhistle, and the sudden sharp hill near Vindolanda, such questions took my mind off the gradient, though few answers were forthcoming.
Unlike the Hadrian’s Wall walking path, which is right next to the masonry in many places, the cycle route runs about a mile to the south, and of course is longer than the Wall itself since it also includes a stretch of the Cumbrian coast. This, however, brings a cyclist alongside hedgerows plump with seasonal blackberries and past major Roman sites like Vindolanda, famous for the fantastic preservation of organic archaeological artefacts such as shoes, and only a short way from the forts of Housesteads, Chesters, and Birdoswald, and the Roman town of Corbridge.
The ancient structures exist in many places well above knee high, and the interpretations and museums bring the remains to life. At Vindolanda, I loved reading a slender Roman writing tablet made of wood, on which a soldier had asked his commander for a weekend off to go and have fun at Corbridge.
In the crypt of Hexham Abbey, it was fun to spot Roman inscriptions or carvings, reused, sometimes upside down, in building the Christian church.
While the finds of jewellery and tombstones of women, emphasised the family communities that grew up around these predominantly military outposts. One of the most interesting and finely carved of these stones was found at Arbeia fort, in South Shields. It shows a woman carved in a style more commonly seen in Syria, and records her husband’s despair at her death. She was called Regina, and was from a tribe native to modern Essex; but he came from Palmyra and lamented her passing both in Latin and in his native language on the memorial.
The Northumberland and Cumbrian countryside were also stars of the ride: blustery Whitehaven, where the dark waves were white-crested; purple storm clouds over the Lake District inland and at Allonby; verdant back routes out of Newcastle and along the railway by the North Tyne; and the glorious, silvery, shimmering flats of the RSPB reserve by the Solway Firth.
That final day saw me relish the open skies of Cumbria one last time, before rolling again into Carlisle. The next leg of my lap of the Empire will be slightly further afield, starting in Vienna and heading to the Black Sea.
Penny Coombe blogs as The Cycling Archaeologist .
Cycling along Hadrian's Wall
Distance: total 174 miles or 280km; c. 35 miles or 55km per day with lots of stops, and some archaeological fieldwork in the middle.
Route: Easy and signposted, following the Hadrian’s Cycleway, National Cycle Route no.72, from Arbeia Roman fort and Museum at South Shields to the Roman bath house at Ravenglass. The city centre of Newcastle gives way to rolling hills by Hadrian’s Wall itself, and on to the flat, coastal views from Cumbria towards the Isle of Man and Scotland.
Conditions: In September, the weather was a mixture of rain showers and sunny spells. Tarmac roads made the cycling straightforward.
Accommodation: A combination of camping, self-catering, and hotels.
Bikes used: A Trek 1.5 road bike, 2008 model, with rear pannier rack attached with p-clips.
Maps/guides: Just the Sustrans route map and sign posts
I’m glad I had… My waterproof jacket, a good flask for coffee to warm up while wandering around Roman sites, and a small jar for collecting hedgerow blackberries!
Next time I would… wear my cycling shoes with neoprene overshoes – archaeological excavation boots made for lumpy pedal action…

Roman places to stop
History enthusiasts will love this route, though there is something for everyone.
At Vindolanda , Roman archaeological treasures are pulled from the water-logged conditions during excavations each summer and displayed in the site museum.
Roman forts and milecastles all along the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall give a taste of military life. Arbeia Roman Fort is worth a stop, while Corbridge town was the place for soldiers to take time off.
The market towns of Hexham and Carlisle are also packed with medieval history (and great tea and cake stops!), while Haltwhistle is famous for being at the geographic centre of Britain.
The evocative ruins of Lanercost Priory bear witness to protracted battles between the Scots and the English, and all around is Border Reiver country. To the west, the coast of the Solway Firth is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and RSPB reserve, while the hills of the Lake District form an impressive backdrop inland.

About this route
Shadow the line of Hadrian’s Wall all the way from Bowness-on-Solway to Tynemouth along Hadrian’s Cycleway. This 100-mile-long cycling holiday rolls across the green hills of Northumberland between welcoming villages with cosy inns, never straying far from the UK’s largest Roman monument.
Here, the sedimentary progression of history stands on full display, in the castles and churches built on the foundations of ruined Roman forts, and in the houses and towers crafted with stone from Hadrian’s Wall. Extra Nights & Rest Days
Elevation & terrain, route profile.
From Bowness-on-Solway the route is almost entirely flat until Warwick Bridge. From here on it rises and falls steeply through Haltwhistle and clambers all the way up to the route’s highest point at Crindledykes, 256 metres above sea level.
It's then a long, undulating descent from here down to Newbrough, broken by a hard but short ascent at Fourstones. Only one noteworthy climb remains, leading into Ovingham, and this is barely moderate in difficulty after the hills that have preceded it.
- Smooth, low-traffic roads
- Country lanes
- Dedicated traffic-free cycle paths
- Riverside paths
Hadrian’s Cyclepath rarely strays from good tarmac roads . When it does, it keeps to well-surfaced tracks .

If you’re tempted by a coast-to-coast ride, but fear that the hills will be too much for you, Hadrian’s Cycleway is the one to choose.
Never too difficult and with great scenery along the way – from the wild coast to the rugged beauty of Northumberland – it’s the ideal short-break tour. Market towns such as Brampton and Haltwhistle are lovely places to stop, and the bright lights of Newcastle round off your stay.
It broadly follows the route of Hadrian’s Wall, which started near Carlisle and ended at Tynemouth, near Newcastle. Whereas the C2C climbs 600m above sea level, and the Way of the Roses touches 400m, Hadrian’s Cycleway doesn’t go much above 250m.
Yet there’s still a taste of the Northumbrian wilds, particularly around the Roman forts of Birdoswald and Vindolanda. The route darts back and forth from the wall, preferring quiet roads to historical fidelity, but if anything, that makes it more enjoyably varied.
The full Hadrian’s Cycleway starts on the Cumbrian Coast at Ravenglass. We concentrate here on the coast-to-coast section, from Carlisle to Newcastle, which has the best scenery and is the easiest to get to. If you have more time, you might consider adding the 87 flat, coastal miles from Ravenglass to Carlisle to your holiday.
How long does it take?
It’s 83 miles from Carlisle to the mouth of the Tyne, so two or three days for most cyclists. Add another two days if you’re starting at Ravenglass. (But the really keen have been known to do it overnight !)
What bike do you need?
Any bike: the route is mostly on tarmac. There’s just one short bumpy section at Vindolanda, and a gravel path shortly before Haltwhistle where the road runs parallel.
I fancy cycling back. Which way?
You’re spoilt for choice. The C2C is the most popular pairing – either following the south bank of the Tyne then to Consett, or continuing down the coast to Sunderland then heading west. But if you’re feeling intrepid, the tough Reivers Route (NCN 10) starts at Tynemouth on its very hilly and remote course back to Carlisle.
Getting there
How do i get there.
It’s an easy route to access by train, with mainline services at either end. Virgin’s express services run from north and south to Carlisle, from where local trains pootle down the coast to Ravenglass. You’ll need to book in advance on the Virgin trains, both to secure a cycle space and to get an affordable ticket. The coast line is friendly and the guards are used to bikes.
Newcastle has connections to most parts of Britain. Again, you’ll need to book in advance to get a good price and a cycle space – particularly on the CrossCountry services, which have very poor bike accommodation.
The entire route is paralleled by local railway lines (Ravenglass–Carlisle and Carlisle–Newcastle), so you can easily catch a train back to your starting point or bail out halfway if need be.
What about Newcastle?
Rejoice: you can now take your bike on the Tyne & Wear Metro. This makes getting back from the end of the ride much easier. You’ll have to get off at Manors, just before reaching the city centre stations, and cycle to your mainline train.

The Hadrian's Wall Coast to Coast bike route is a fantastic way to cross Britain on a 3-day, fully signed and waymarked bike ride. The hills are more rolling and slightly less demanding than the main C2C route, but the scenery is just as impressive, the historic interest is there too, and fit riders do have extra ride options open to them.
As with all C2C bike rides we make the best use of the weekends, so you arrive with us in Penrith on a Thursday evening and complete the ride on Sunday afternoon (except some Bank Holiday weekends). On the first day of biking we transfer you to the start point at Whitehaven, then you pedal north up the Solway coast to join the first section of wall as it brings you inland past Carlisle Castle and onwards across the country, following the wall all the way, over the three days.

Arrive in the seaside town of Whitley Bay. Check in is possible from 3pm and free car parking is available in the nearby Playhouse Car Park NE26 1LZ. For those arriving by train into Newcastle you can use the Tyne and Wear Metro system to reach Whitley Bay. If you arrive early we can recommend a walk along the golden sands to St. Mary's Lighthouse, that also features a nature reserve and wetland habitat ideal for rockpooling. We end our ride about 3 miles south from here on day 5.
The Tour Leader plans to meet you in reception at 6pm for the introductory briefing, followed by the option to enjoy a group meal (not included) to get acquainted with your fellow guests.
Accommodation:
Premier Inn (or similar)

After breakfast we drive (2hrs) to Bowness on Solway. We unload and assign the bikes and there will be time to get comfortable and make any necessary adjustments. The included 24-gear hybrid bikes are ideally suited to the terrain. Maps and detailed route notes will be provided, which means we can cycle at our own pace, either individually or with other group members. Our local Leader will transfer the luggage, provide an emergency backup vehicle, and will meet us at various points during our cycling days to help ensure all runs smoothly and you enjoy your trip.
We start our ride in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, following National Cycle Network Route 72 alongside the Solway Firth before heading inland to Carlisle. You may choose to visit the medieval castle that has watched over the Cathedral City of Carlisle for more than nine centuries. Our ride continues to Warwick Bridge followed by a short climb to Brampton where we spend the night. We recommend an optional evening walk around Talkin Tarn glacial lake and Country Park just outside Brampton. Please note that due to the small size of hotels our group may be accommodated in more than 1 hotel tonight.
Our total cycling distance today is approximately 45 kilometres/28 mile (total 330 metres/1083 feet ascent and 265 metres/869 feet descent).
Howard Arms Hotel (or similar)
Meals Provided: Breakfast
Back on the bikes this morning, we have a relatively shorter ride today that takes in some wonderful Roman heritage sites. Our first suggested stop is at Lanercost Priory (English Heritage, optional visit) where you can visit the impressive remains of this 12th century Augustinian priory. There is a steep climb out of Banks before arriving at our first site on Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald Roman Fort (English Heritage, optional visit), also good for a coffee break. You can see the longest remaining stretch of the Wall here and explore the ruins of the Fort, a turret and milecastle. After a steep climb (up to 17%), we reach Greenhead Bank where you may choose to have lunch and have the chance to visit the excellent Roman Army Museum. It is possible to buy a combined ticket here that includes the entrance to Vindolanda tomorrow. The final stretch is an easy ride down to the hotel in the small town of Haltwhistle. Please note that due to the small size of hotels our group may be accommodated in more than 1 hotel tonight.
Our total cycling distance today is approximately 22 kilometres/13.7 mile (total 305 metres/1001 feet ascent and 260 metres/853 feet descent).
Centre of Britain Hotel (or similar)
Our ride this morning follows the South Tyne Valley to Bardon Mill, before some steep climbs back up to Hadrian's Wall at the Roman archaeological site of Vindolanda. There is a cafe here to have a break and we recommend a visit to the site where you may even see some archaeologists and learn what has been uncovered recently. The cycle ride continues to the historic and picturesque village of Corbridge where we spend the night. Once a Roman garrison town, it is possible to visit the remains of Corbridge Roman Town (English Heritage, optional visit) located just outside of town. Please note that depending on hotel availability, tonight may be spent in either Corbridge or Hexham. Hexham has a beautiful Abbey and would mean a shorter ride (8 kilometer/5 mile less) today and more tomorrow.
Our total cycling distance today is approximately 38 kilometres/23.6 mile (total 470 metres/1542 feet ascent and 550 metres/1805 feet descent).
The Beaumont Hotel (or similar)
Our final ride follows the River Tyne Valley along minor roads, disused railway lines and cycle paths into Newcastle passing Ovingham Bridge and Wylam (George Stephenson's birthplace). After passing through the centre of the city with the river on our right, we weave our way along the final 20 kilometer/12.4 mile to the North Sea through Wallsend and North Shields. Finally, we reach the small bay at Tynemouth and complete our journey from coast to coast with the ruins of Tynemouth Castle and Priory on the headland above. There is a great feeling of real achievement as we realise that we just crossed England by pedal power!
Our journey ends at Tynemouth Castle at around 4pm when we leave the bikes and say farewell. If not picking up your car you can take a short walk to Tynemouth metro station on the Tyne and Wear Metro system, from where it is a 30-minute journey into central Newcastle and the mainline rail station. The earliest your train can depart from Newcastle is 5pm.
Our total cycling distance today is approximately 50 kilometres/31.1 mile (total 390 metres/1280 feet ascent and 400 metres/1312 feet descent).

Trip information
The UK has a temperate but very variable climate. In general the summers are warm with July and August being the warmest. The winters are cool and the lowest temperatures are recorded during January and February. Whatever the season it is advisable to be prepared for rain!

Optional activities the following excursions and/or activities are usually available and may be arranged locally. estimated costs are provided below for guidance only, are on a per person basis unless shown otherwise, and may depend on the number of participants. prices quoted are correct as of the date these tour notes were originally issued but may change at any time due to currency fluctuations. please note: these activities are booked and paid for locally and do not form part of your explore holiday contract..
We recommend visits to the following sites that are on our route. It is worth considering becoming a member of English Heritage. Estimated costs are provided below. Entrance tickets are available upon arrival and no pre-booking is necessary. Carlisle Castle - (English Heritage) - £11.20 Lanercost Priory - (English Heritage) - £5.90 Birdoswald Roman Fort - (English Heritage) - £9 Roman Army Museum - £7 Vindolanda Fort and Museum - £8 Corbridge Roman Town - (English Heritage) - £9
Light rainwear may be needed at any time of year, and a warm fleece/jacket is recommended for cooler evenings and nights. We recommend cycle gloves, padded cycle shorts, a windcheater and quick drying fabric tops.
If you are not bringing cycle shoes then try to bring stiff-soled shoes as these are better for cycling - transmitting your energy into the pedals more efficiently. This becomes more relevant and recommended the more demanding the grade and distances to cover. Comfortable footwear is useful when not on the bike.
Luggage: On tour
We recommend you bring a daypack and one main piece of luggage (total allowance: 44lb/20kg) which will be transported between hotels while you cycle. Check the bike details section to see if a pannier or handlebar bag is provided on the bike.
On all Explore cycle holidays we strongly recommend you bring along and wear your cycle helmet. In case of an accident resulting in personal injury, certain insurance policies are invalidated in cases where a helmet was not being worn. Cycle glasses to protect against dust, pollen and the sun, padded cycle gloves and a water bottle or water delivery system (e.g. camelback or platypus) are also useful. You may choose to bring your own gel seat cover for added comfort. If a handle bar bag or pannier is not provided (check bike details) then you may like to bring a small rucksack to wear while cycling. Other items to consider bringing are a sunhat and sun cream, earplugs and insect repellent.
Food and drink The costs for meals may vary depending upon location, type of restaurant and number of courses eaten and so the prices given are an average guide. Local restaurants located off the beaten track may be less expensive, whereas an upmarket restaurant located in the centre of a major city may charge more.

Cycle the breathtaking Hadrian’s Cycleway.
Hadrians wall cycle route, cycle the hadrians wall cycle route.
With a total distance of 173 miles /277km, starting in Ravenglass on the western Lake District, the Hadrian’s Wall Cycle Route follows the western coastline up to Carlisle before weaving in and out of the historic route of Hadrians Wall to finish at either Tynemouth or South Shields. This is a more leisurely ride, still with some challenging climbs to tackle, but there is lots of history to take in, stunning scenery to enjoy and coffee shops to sample!
Along the route you will take in places such as Carlisle Castle, Birdowald, The Roman Army Museum, Vindolanda, Housesteads, Corbridge and Segedunum.
At Pedal Power, we can provide some or all of the following services for the Hadrians Wall Cycle Route including :-
- Cycle hire / pannier hire

Testimonials.
The Hadrians Cycleway tour done over three days averages at 40 miles a day. If you would prefer a more challenging ride then please see our 2 day version.
The route takes in a variety of different scenery during the 3 days. We leave Silloth on pleasant country roads for the first ten miles or so and then enjoy lovely, scenic cycling by the gorse strewn beaches of the Solway Coast before arriving in Brampton for our first night’s accommodation. On Day 2, we are treated to ancient Priorys, Hadrian’s Wall turrets and old Roman Forts. Excellent cycle-ways take us up close and personal to many of the ruins and interesting archaeological finds of this fascinating landscape. We spend our second night in the Northumberland town of Corbridge. Day 3 is easy final ride taking us from Corbridge into Newcastle and on through South Shields to our finish point at the North Sea at Tynemouth.
If you are taking the train the best station is Wigton, which is closest to Silloth and we will pick you up there. At the end of the tour we will take you to Newcastle station (to arrive around 15.45) or you can choose the return transfer option and be taken back to Silloth to collect your car (expect to arrive around 18.00). There is always a good camaraderie during the trip and we aim to facilitate a relaxed, friendly & memorable tour. If you choose the return transfer option please add £50.00.

Hadrian’s Cycleway (3 day) Route
The first day is your arrival day and cycling begins the following morning. Details of your accommodation will be provided and we will meet for an evening meal if you are able to attend. Cycling begins at around 8:45 am the following morning to allow a nice pace for the first days ride to Brampton.
Arrival Day – Thurs : Silloth
Arrive at Silloth. Accommodation is included on your arrival day and we will collect you from a nearby station if travelling by train. Check in is from 14:00 and the guides will be around all day to meet you. We plan to have an initial brief at the hotel at 19:30 followed by a meal at around 20:00.
Day 1 – Fri : Silloth to Brampton (50 miles) Elevation: 1129ft / 344m
We have chosen the start point of Silloth to begin our adventure. This smart seaside town is an ideal jumping off point for exploring the region and we start off on really pleasant country roads with a gentle topography. A little further along and the country roads give way to some lovely cycling by the beaches and gorse strewn inlets of this little known section of the impressive Solway Coast. Passing lovely little seaside villages and experiencing the diverse wildlife that the salt marshes and rare flora and fauna afford. We spend the vast majority of the first day on fairly flat roads. Towards the end of the day we head on through Carlisle utilising cycle paths with good surfaces and then head into the Cumbrian hills to our first night’s destination of the busy little market town of Brampton.
Day 2 – Sat : Brampton to Corbridge (40 miles) Elevation: 2464ft / 751m
Today is a tough but fantastic day in the saddle that showcases some of the best scenery in this area. You will be spoilt for choice with interesting geographical and historical treasures. This challenging day begins in a leisurely enough fashion as we dawdle past the attractive ruins of Lanercost Priory which dates back to the 12th Century. The route soon becomes hilly though as we make our way up to get a closer look at the ruins of Hadrians Wall and one of the best preserved Roman Forts at Birdoswald, formerly known as Banna. Further along this challenging route we utilise the excellent cycleway past the fantastic site of Vindolanda Roman Fort. This rewarding day finally ends up in the scattered, well-to-do town of Corbridge.
Day 3 – Sun : Corbridge to Tynemouth (32 miles) Elevation: 979ft / 298m
Our final day, as an antidote to yesterday’s hills, sees us with a few cheeky morning climbs and then after that it’s plain sailing all the way to the coast, yippee! A large chunk of the day is spent on and off cycle path through parks, forests and towns as we hook up with the river Tyne and head on past the impressive waterfront at Newcastle. Pushing on through our last ten miles, victory will be signalled by the smell of the sea by the quay in Tynemouth where we re-group for a lazy lunch before our victory parade to the beach, aglow with pride, or possibly that may be the celebratory prosecco!
You should be back at Newcastle station for 16.00 and if you book the coach back to Silloth then you should be in Silloth for approximately 18.00. The coach from Tynemouth to Newcastle station is included in the tour price but the coach to Penrith is an extra £50 per person (this included transportation of your luggage and bike).
Additional Information
What’s included.
The tour price includes 3 nights accommodation, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, full trip support including a tour leader that cycles with the group, back up van with spare parts and a few spare bikes, detailed route notes and maps so that you can cycle at your own pace and luggage transfer each day. The back up van also carrys a range of snacks, fruit, tea/coffee, water, biscuits, chocolate, dried fruit and nuts etc which you are welcome to have throughout the day. The tour starts from Silloth but we can pick you up from Wigton if you like.
What’s Not Included?
Evening meals, cycle hire (available from £50 – £80), transport to Wigton, transport from Tynemouth(although transfer to Newcastle train station is still included in the tour price).
The group will be a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 25 people. We feel that this size of group works best as there will always be enough in the group for some good company but there won’t be so many people that it becomes overcrowded.
Accommodation
You will stay in good quality hotels or B&B’s. All the places that we stay have been carefully selected on grounds of character, location, comfort and cleanliness. Hot showers will always be available so that you can get cleaned up and relax after a long day on the saddle.
What are the Accommodation Options?
We stay in clean comfortable 3 star B&B’s and hotels. Please have a read through the following information to ensure that you choose most suitable option for you.
Twin or double room option
If you are with your partner then you can have a double room each night of the tour. If you are with a friend/relative then you would have a twin room each night of the tour. If you are travelling alone and choose this option then you will be roomed with other members of the group (same sex) and stay in a twin (occasionally a triple) room throughout. Usually you will have an en-suite bathroom but on rare occasions you may have a separate bathroom but this is unlikely.
Single room option
Here you are guaranteed a single room each night of the trip. You will have a mixture of en-suite rooms and rooms that have a private bathroom or on very rare occasion a shared bathroom. Sometimes you will have sole occupancy of a double room.
Sole use of a double room option
Here you are guaranteed single occupancy of a double room. You will always have an en-suite bathroom.
All of your breakfasts are included in the price of the trip. You will have a choice of full English, toast, cereals, fruit juices, tea, coffee etc. Lunches are also provided each day at a local cafe. We will meet each evening at a local pub for an evening meal (not included in the price).
An experienced tour leader will cycle with you each day and be on hand to help with any bike problems that may occur.
A back up van will leap frog the group a number of times each day so that help is never far away. We carry a range of spare parts so that repairs can be made en-route and we will have a spare bike available in the event that your bike has a serious breakdown.
We highly recommend that you use a bike that you are used to and feel comfortable riding. Your bike should be fully serviced and in good condition before you start, this will reduce the risk of mechanical problems and unnecessary stoppages along the way. It should be noted that if you have your bike serviced before the tour then it is a good idea to ride it a few times to allow things to ‘bed in’ before joining the tour. Either a road bike or a touring bike is preferable. We have a range of bikes available for hire if you don’t have your own bike. We will take your bike over for you if you bring it to us before hand and we will take it back for you at the end of the tour as well (free of charge if you drop off and pick up or we can box the bike and post it to you for a charge). Please note that Peak Tours will not be held responsible for any damage cause in the transportation of the bikes, problems are very rare indeed and we have a very safe, tried and tested system. Any bikes with DI gears need to bring their chargers with them for the trip and riders also need to be aware that it may be necessary to remove the saddle and in some cases with DI gears, unplug the cable (although we try to avoid this). We also remove the front wheel of most bikes being transported and place them in wheel bags, if anyone has a wheel that requires a specific tool you would need to provide that too please.
This tour is suitable for someone with a reasonable level of fitness and who wants a challenge. If you do plenty of training beforehand you should have no problem completing the ride.
It must be stressed that a good amount of training before the ride will make your tour much more enjoyable and ensure that you finish your ride. We are always happy to advise you about training plans in preparation for the ride.
Clothing & equipment
Clothing for all weathers is recommended so waterproofs are essential. A full recommended kit list is provided and we are always happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Your baggage will be transferred for you each day and will be waiting for you at your accommodation when you arrive.
How do I get to Silloth?
The easiest way to get to Silloth is by car or by train. The closest train station is Wigton and we can pick you and your cycle up when you arrive on the Thursday. Wigton is about 12 miles from our accommodation in Silloth. To get to Silloth
From the South Leave the M6 at Junction 41 and follow the signs for Wigton B5305 and continue on the B5302 to Silloth.
From the North Leave M6 at junction 44, join the A7 through Carlisle city centre or the A689 on the new Carlisle bypass and follow the signs for Workington (A595). On the Thursby bypass take the A596 Wigton. At the end of the Wigton bypass follow signs for Silloth B5302.
By Train There are frequent trains from all major stations to Silloth, changing at Carlisle. For train timetables tel: 08457 48 49 50 or book online at www.nationalrail.co.uk
What happens when I arrive?
If you would like collecting from Wigton we will meet you at the station and take you, your luggage and your bike to Silloth where we will spend our first night. It is about 12 miles from Wigton to Silloth so if you want to cycle we can meet you at Wigton and take your luggage for you. Just let us know when you want picking up and we will meet you then. We will have a group meal at around 7:30 on the Thursday night so if you are arriving much earlier you have the time free to yourself.
What happens at the end?
On the final day we finish cycling on Sunday around 15:00. We have a final lunch just before the end where we re-group and all cycle to the finish point together and after dipping our wheel in the sea and have our photo’s taken, the coach will meet us on the priory car park above the beach at Tynemouth. The coach will then do a transfer to drop people off at Newcastle if needed and then it will take people back to Silloth. The transfer to Newcastle is included in the tour price but the transfer option back to Silloth is an extra £50.
What mechanical knowledge do I need?
We don’t expect you to be an expert bike mechanic but there are a few simple skills that will be a great benefit to you. The most important skill you need to know is how to fix a puncture. It is quite likely that at some point you will have a puncture or two so it is essential that you carry a puncture repair kit and a spare tube or two with you. It is also helpful if you know how to change your brake pads and adjust your brakes & gears however this isn’t essential. Our guides will help you with any repairs and adjustments en-route.
What are the lunches like?
We arrange a buffet lunch at a pub or café each day. This will be a mixture of sandwiches, salads, soup, pasta salad etc and will be different at each place. There will always be enough to go round so don’t worry if you are at the back of the group. The lunch stops provide a good opportunity to re-group and catch up with others and compare notes.
Will I be left behind?
No, a tour leader cycles at the back of the group so that you won’t be left behind if you are worried about cycling too slowly. Throughout the group there will be a mix of abilities and cycling speeds so you will usually be able to cycle with others that cycle at a similar pace. Some people like to cycle fast whilst others prefer to take their time, stop for coffee and cake or stop to take photos etc so whether you are a ‘speed demon’ or more of a ‘tourer’ there usually will be someone to cycle with each day.
Do I need to be super fit?
No, you don’t need to be super fit but a good level of fitness is important as the Hadrians Cycleway ranges from moderate cycing to being a challenging ride. The fitter you are and the more training that you do before hand will add to the enjoyment of your tour and improve your chances of succeeding at the challenge. If you need any advice about fitness please contact us and we will be happy to discuss any questions and concerns that you may have.
What are the groups like?
Obviously each group is different but generally our groups are a fun, friendly, helpful & adventurous bunch. There will be people of all ages and from all walks of life. We tend to get quite a few older riders although there will always be a few younger riders as well. So far our youngest rider on a tour was 15 & the eldest 78. We think that a group of 20-25 is ideal as there will be plenty of people with similar interests and character without being such a big group that it becomes too much.
How do I get my bike home at the end of the trip?
If you are travelling home by car from Silloth then the return coach from Tynemouth has a bike trailer to fit all the bikes in. If you are travelling home from Newcastle train station then the coach will take you and your bike there where you can then take it on your train journey home. If you live near Peak Tours HQ in Glossop, Derbyshire then we can always bring the bike back here and you can pick it up from us free of charge. Alternatively we can always bring it back to Peak Tours HQ and post it back to you. Please contact us in the office for a quote for this service.
What happens in the evenings?
Once you have arrived at your accommodation you should have chance for some time to relax, have a shower etc before the evening meal. We usually arrange somewhere to eat for the evening meal so that we can all get together and you won’t be left alone if you would like to eat with others. Quite often we will simply arrange a certain pub to meet up and just drift in when you are ready whilst at other places we have a set time to eat – it just depends on the location.
Does the support vehicle follow the group?
No, the back up van doesn’t drive behind the group at all times but the van shouldn’t be too far away if you require assistance. In the morning we have a group brief and set off cycling, meanwhile the backup driver will collect all the luggage from the various B&B’s & hostels. Once all of the luggage has been loaded, the support vehicle will leapfrog the group stopping when necessary. The backup driver will be at the lunch stop should you need anything from the van and in the afternoon will go on ahead to ensure that your luggage is in place before you arrive.
How much luggage can I take?
There is limited space in the back up van to store luggage. We therefore request that you try to keep your luggage size to a minimum & try not to bring too much with you. Washing clothes can be done en-route so you shouldn’t need to bring a clean set of clothes for every day. The ideal size for luggage is 70 x 50 x 30 cm and a weight of 15 – 18kg (or less).
What training should I do?
The more the better. We will provide a training guide for you so that you can build up your cycling strength and prepare for the ride in the correct way. It would be advantageous but not essential if you could cycle two days back to back whilst training and it is also important that you cycle on some hills.
What bike should I use?
The most suitable bike for this trip is a hybrid, touring or road bike, however it is entirely up to you what type of bike you use. Some people may be riding mountain bikes, others hybrids and others on racing bikes. We suggest a tyre width of 25mm and up for this trip
What gear should I take?
We provide a suggested kit list so please contact us if you would like a copy sending to you.
What is the male / female ratio?
This varies with each group. There are usually more guys than gals but an average would be about 1/3rd ladies & 2/3rds gents.
Can I hire a bike from you?
It is advisable to use your own bike if possible however we realise that it is not always possible to use your own steed so you may wish to hire one. We have a range of bikes available for hire for the tour and details of each of these bikes can be seen by clicking on the ‘Tour Extras’ tab. All of our hire bikes come fitted with water bottle cage, bell, rear rack (for touring bikes only) and front and rear lights. We also provide a pannier (touring bikes) or seat post bag (road bikes) with a multi-tool, pump, puncture repair kit, spare tube and tyre levers at no extra cost. All bikes can have flat or SPD pedals so please let us know your preference or, if you would prefer to use your own (and maybe your own saddle) then please bring these along with you. We can also provide a helmet for you at no extra cost.

1. Booking & Paying For Your Arrangements
A booking is made with us when you pay us a deposit (or full payment if you are booking within 60 days of departure) and we issue you with a booking confirmation. All bookings are made subject to the eligibility requirements listed at section 2 below. We reserve the right to return your deposit and decline to issue a booking confirmation at our absolute discretion. A binding contract will come into existence between you and us as soon as we have issued you with a booking confirmation that will confirm the details of your booking and will be sent to you. The accommodation provisions included at section 14 will also apply to your booking.
Upon receipt, if you believe that any details on booking confirmation or any other document are wrong you must advise us immediately as changes cannot be made later and it may harm your rights if we are not notified of any inaccuracies in any document within ten days of our sending it out.
The balance of the cost of your arrangements (including any applicable surcharge) is due not less than 60 days prior to scheduled departure. You will receive a payment reminder from us prior to your balance becoming due. If we do not receive this balance in full and on time, we reserve the right to treat your booking as cancelled by you in which case we shall retain your deposit.
2. Eligibility Requirements
In booking with Peak Tours you understand that there are certain risks and dangers inherent in taking part in a cycling holiday and that by the very nature of the activities you will participate in these may be hazardous to you, including cycling on uneven surfaces, cycling in inclement weather, cycling in close proximity to vehicular traffic and any other activities involving inherently dangerous risks, and you acknowledge that you will be exposed to an element of personal risk. These include the risk of personal injury and death and loss of or damage to your property. You are under a duty to mitigate any risks to yourself as far as is practicable, by taking all reasonable steps to comply with all instructions of your tour leader and the instructions included in your route map, and taking all reasonable steps to ensure your own safety whilst taking part in the holiday.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you are at a sufficient level of fitness to take part in your chosen holiday (please also see section 13 - Disabilities and Medical Problems). You will generally be at a sufficient level of fitness if you are able to complete your day's cycling within a reasonable timescale (which shall be set by your tour leader, and in respect of most holidays shall mean completing the day's cycling by 18:30 hours local time at the latest). If you finish your day's cycling beyond this time period, it shall be at the tour leader's absolute discretion as to whether you are at a sufficient level of fitness to continue with your chosen holiday. You are required to follow any safety advice or other instructions provided to you by your tour leader, and wear a cycle helmet and appropriate clothing at all times whilst cycling.
If you are using your own bike, it must be suitable for use for the duration of the route of your chosen holiday. It is your responsibility to arrange for your bike to be transported to the holiday. Your bike must be insured for the duration of your holiday, and your insurance should cover loss or damage to your bike that may occur during your holiday. Peak Tours take great care to ensure that your bike is safe at all times. However, Peak Tours cannot accept any responsibility for any damage to your bike or loss of your bike, including if your bike is stolen during the holiday. This includes times when your bikes are being transported in one of the vans. If a van was stolen containing your bike then you would need to have an adequate insurance policy in place to cover this.
Bike hire is available to be booked at any time up to the start of your holiday, subject to availability. If you choose the bike hire option, your bike will be provided at the beginning of the holiday and returned to ground staff at the end of your holiday.
3. Accuracy
We endeavour to ensure that all the information and prices contained in our advertising material are accurate, however occasionally changes and errors occur and we reserve the right to correct prices and other details in such circumstances. You must check the current price and all other details relating to the arrangements that you wish to book before you make your booking.
4.Insurance
Adequate travel insurance is a condition of your contract with us. You must be satisfied that your insurance fully covers all your personal requirements including pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation charges, medical expenses and repatriation in the event of accident or illness. If you choose to travel without adequate insurance cover, we will not be liable for any losses howsoever arising, in respect of which insurance cover would otherwise have been available.
We reserve the right to amend the price of unsold holidays at any time and correct errors in the prices of confirmed holidays. We also reserve the right to increase the price of confirmed holidays solely to allow for increases which are a direct consequence of changes in:
- the price of the carriage of passengers resulting from the cost of fuel or other power sources;
- the level of taxes or fees chargeable for services applicable to the holiday imposed by third parties not directly involved in the performance of the holiday, including tourist taxes, landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports; and
- the exchange rates relevant to the package.
Such variations could include but are not limited to cost changes which are part of our contracts with accommodation suppliers (and their agents), transfer operators and any other transport providers.
You will be charged for the amount of any increase in accordance with this clause. However, if this means that you have to pay an increase of more than 8% of the price of your confirmed holiday (excluding any insurance premiums, amendment charges and/or additional services or travel arrangements), you will have the option of accepting a change to another holiday if we are able to offer one (if this is of lower price you will be refunded the difference in price), or cancelling and receiving a full refund of all monies paid to us, except for any insurance premiums and any amendment charges and/or additional services or travel arrangements. Should you decide to cancel for this reason, you must exercise your right to do so within 7 days from the issue date printed on your final invoice. We will consider an appropriate refund of insurance premiums paid if you can show that you are unable to transfer or reuse your policy.
Should the price of your holiday go down due to the changes mentioned above, then any refund due will be paid to you less an administrative fee of £10. However, please note that travel arrangements are not always purchased in local currency and some apparent changes have no impact on the price of your travel due to contractual and other protection in place.
There will be no change made to the price of your confirmed holiday within 20 days of your departure nor will refunds be paid during this period.
6. Jurisdiction and Applicable Law
These Booking Conditions and any agreement to which they apply are governed in all respects by English law. We both agree that any dispute, claim or other matter which arises between us out of or in connection with your contract or booking will be dealt with by the Courts of England and Wales only. You may however, choose the law and jurisdiction of Scotland or Northern Ireland if you live in those places and if you wish to do so.
7.Cutting your holiday short
If you are forced to return home early, we cannot refund the cost of any travel arrangements you have not used. If you cut short your holiday and return home early in circumstances where you have no reasonable cause for complaint about the standard of accommodation and services provided, we will not offer you any refund for that part of your holiday not completed, or be liable for any associated costs you may incur. Depending on the circumstances, your travel insurance may offer cover for curtailment and we suggest that any claim is made directly with them.
8. If You Change Your Booking & Transfers of Bookings
If you wish to change any part of your booking after our confirmation invoice has been issued, you must inform us in writing (which includes by email) as soon as possible. This should be done by the first named person on the booking. Whilst we will do our best to assist, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to meet your requested change. Where we can meet a request, all changes will be subject to payment of any costs and charges incurred by us and/or incurred or imposed by any of our suppliers in making this change. You should be aware that these costs could increase the closer to the departure date that changes are made and you should contact us as soon as possible. Where we are unable to assist you and you do not wish to proceed with the original booking we will treat this as a cancellation by you. A cancellation fee may be payable in accordance with clause 9.
Transfer of Booking:
If you or any member of your party is prevented from travelling, that person(s) may transfer their place to someone else, subject to the following conditions:
- that person is introduced by you and satisfies all the conditions applicable to the holiday;
- we are notified not less than 7 days before departure;
- you pay any fees, charges or other costs arising from the transfer; and
- the transferee agrees to these booking conditions and all other terms of the contract between us.
You and the transferee remain jointly and severally liable for payment of all sums. If you are unable to find a replacement, cancellation charges as set out in clause 9 will apply in order to cover our estimated costs. Otherwise, no refunds will be given for passengers not travelling or for unused services.
Important Note: Certain arrangements may not be amended or transferred after they have been confirmed and any alteration could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements.
9. If You Cancel Your Booking Before Departure
If you or any other member of your party decides to cancel your confirmed booking you must notify us in writing (which includes by email). Your notice of cancellation will only take effect when it is received in writing by us at our offices and will be effective from the date on which we receive it.
Since we incur costs in cancelling your arrangements, you will have to pay the cancellation charges as follows:
Important Note: Certain arrangements may not be amended after they have been confirmed and any alteration or cancellation could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements in addition to the charge above.
If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges.
Where possible, we will deduct the cancellation charge(s) from any monies you have already paid to us.
10. If We Change or Cancel
As we plan your holiday arrangements many months in advance we may occasionally have to make changes or cancel your booking and we reserve the right to do so at any time.
Changes: If we make a minor change to your holiday, we will make reasonable efforts to inform you as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure but we will have no liability to you. An example of a minor change would include change of accommodation to another of the same or higher standard.
Occasionally we may have to make a significant change to your confirmed arrangements. Examples of "significant changes" include the following, when made before departure:
- A change of accommodation area for the whole or a significant part of your time away.
- A change of accommodation to that of a lower standard or classification for the whole or a significant part of your time away.
- A change of outward departure time or overall length of your arrangements by more than 12 hours.
- A significant change to your itinerary, missing out one or more destination entirely.
Cancellation: We will not cancel your travel arrangements less than 60 days before your departure date, except for reasons of Events Beyond Our Control or failure by you to pay the final balance. We may cancel your holiday before this date if, e.g., the minimum number of clients required for a particular travel arrangement is not reached.
If we have to make a significant change or cancel, we will tell you as soon as possible and if there is time to do so before departure, we will offer you the choice of:
- (for significant major changes) accepting the changed arrangements; or
- having a refund of all monies paid; or
- if available and where we offer one, accepting an offer of an alternative holiday (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value).
You must notify us of your choice within 7 days of our offer. If we do not hear from you within 7 days, we will contact you again to request notification of your choice. If you fail to respond again, we will assume that you have chosen to accept the change or alternative booking arrangements.
Compensation
In addition to a full refund of all monies paid by you, we will pay you compensation as detailed below, in the following circumstances:
- If, where we make a significant change, you do not accept the changed arrangements and cancel your booking;
- If we cancel your booking and no alternative arrangements are available and/or we do not offer one.
The compensation that we offer does not exclude you from claiming more if you are entitled to do so.
*IMPORTANT NOTE: We will not pay you compensation in the following circumstances:
- where we make a minor change;
- where we make a significant change or cancel your arrangements more than 60 days before departure;
- where we make a significant change and you accept those changed arrangements or you accept an offer of alternative travel arrangements;
- where we have to cancel your arrangements as a result of your failure to make full payment on time;
- where the change or cancellation by us arises out of alterations to the confirmed booking requested by you;
- where we are forced to cancel or change your arrangements due to Events Beyond Our Control (see clause 11).
If we become unable to provide a significant proportion of the arrangements that you have booked with us after you have departed, we will, if possible, make alternative arrangements for you at no extra charge and where those alternative arrangements are of a lower standard, provide you with an appropriate price reduction.
11. Events Beyond Our Control
Except where otherwise expressly stated in these Booking Conditions we will not be liable or pay you compensation if our contractual obligations to you are affected by "Events Beyond Our Control". For the purposes of these Booking Conditions, Events Beyond Our Control means any event beyond our or our supplier's control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Examples include warfare and acts of terrorism (and threat thereof), civil strife, significant risks to human health such as the outbreak of serious disease at the travel destination or natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes or weather conditions which make it impossible to travel safely to the travel destination or remain at the travel destination, the act of any government or other national or local authority including port or river authorities, industrial dispute, labour strikes, lock closure, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, chemical or biological disaster, unavoidable technical problems with transport and all similar events outside our or the supplier(s) concerned's control.
Brexit Implications: please note that certain travel arrangements may be affected as a result of the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union. Please rest assured that this is something we will continue to monitor and will advise our customers as soon as possible if we become aware of any confirmed bookings that will be affected. However, since this is something which is completely unprecedented and outside our control, we would treat any such changes as Events Beyond Our Control, and whilst we will endeavour to provide suitable alternative arrangements or refunds where possible, we will not be liable to pay you any compensation.
12. Special Requests
Any special requests must be advised to us at the time of booking e.g. diet, room location, a particular facility at a hotel etc. You should then confirm your requests in writing. Whilst every effort will be made by us to try and arrange your reasonable special requests, we cannot guarantee that they will be fulfilled. The fact that a special request has been noted on your confirmation invoice or any other documentation or that it has been passed on to the supplier is not confirmation that the request will be met. Failure to meet any special request will not be a breach of contract on our part unless the request has been specifically confirmed by us. We do not accept bookings that are conditional upon any special request being met.
13. Disabilities and Medical Problems
We are not a specialist disabled holiday company, but we will do our utmost to cater for any special requirements you may have. If you or any member of your party has any medical problem or disability which may affect your booking, please provide us with full details before you make your booking so that we can try to advise you as to the suitability of your chosen arrangements. We may require you to produce a doctor's certificate certifying that you are fit to participate. Acting reasonably, if we are unable to properly accommodate the needs of the person(s) concerned, we will not confirm your booking or if you did not give us full details at the time of booking, we will cancel it and impose applicable cancellation charges when we become aware of these details. If, during your holiday, we become aware of a medical problem or disability which may affect your health and safety or the health and safety of others, which you did not disclose at the time of booking, we reserve the right to postpone, restrict or cancel your involvement in any cycling activities, at the tour leader's sole discretion.
14. Accommodation Provisions
B&b option & double or twin/triple.
If you choose the B&B only option you will stay in a mixture of B&B's, hotels and country pubs. If you are travelling with a friend then you will be roomed together in a twin or if you're with your partner then you will be in a double room (or a twin if you prefer). If you are travelling alone then you will be roomed with another member of the group in a twin or triple room (same sex). The actual stopovers may change from the advertised accommodation providers, if this happens then an equivalent standard of accommodation will be used nearby. The majority of the rooms you stay in will be en-suite however you may stay in a couple of rooms that are not en-suite.
SINGLE ROOM OPTION
If you choose the single room option, you will have your own room for the duration of the holiday. This will be in either a single room or single occupancy of a double room in a mixture of en-suite and non en-suite rooms.
SOLE USE OF A DOUBLE ROOM OPTION
If you choose this option, you will have a guaranteed double room to yourself throughout the tour. You will always have an en-suite each night of your holiday. There may be an exceptionally rare occasion when you have a separate bathroom but this is very unlikely. Occasionally you may have a twin room to yourself if a double room isn't available but again, this is rare.
YHA (YOUTH HOSTEL) OPTION
This option is only available for the fourteen day LEJOG tour. If you choose the YHA option you will stay in a mixture of hostels, hotels & B&B's staying in dormitory rooms, single rooms, twin rooms & triples.
15. Complaints
We make every effort to ensure that your holiday arrangements run smoothly but if you do have a problem during your holiday, please inform the relevant supplier (e.g. your hotelier) and your tour leader immediately who will endeavour to put things right. If your complaint is not resolved locally, please contact 07495 023 022 or 01457851462.
If the problem cannot be resolved and you wish to complain further, you must send formal written notice of your complaint to us at our office, ideally within 28 days of the end of your stay, giving your booking reference and all other relevant information. Please keep your letter concise and to the point. This will assist us to quickly identify your concerns and speed up our response to you. Failure to follow the procedure set out in this clause may affect ours and the applicable supplier's ability to investigate your complaint, and will affect your rights under this contract.
You can access the European Commission Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform at http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr/ . This ODR platform is a means of registering your complaint with us; it will not determine how your complaint should be resolved. Please Note: the ODR platform is unlikely to be available for use by UK consumers at such a point that the UK ceases to be a member of the European Union.
16. Your Behaviour
All our customers are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly and acceptable manner and not to disrupt the enjoyment of others. If in our opinion or in the opinion of any hotel manager, tour leader or any other person in authority, your behaviour or that of any member of your party is causing or is likely to cause distress, danger or annoyance to any other customers or any third party, or damage to property, or to cause a delay or diversion to transportation, we reserve the right to terminate your booking with us immediately. In the event of such termination our liability to you and/or your party will cease and you and/or your party will be required to leave your accommodation or other arrangements immediately. We will have no further obligations to you and/or your party. No refunds for lost accommodation or any other arrangements will be made and we will not pay any expenses or costs incurred as a result of termination. You and/or your party may also be required to pay for loss and/or damage caused by your actions and we will hold you and each member of your party jointly and individually liable for any damage or losses caused by you or any member of your party. Full payment for any such damage or losses must be paid directly to the hotel manager or other supplier prior to departure. If you fail to make payment, you will be responsible for meeting any claims (including legal costs) subsequently made against us as a result of your actions together with all costs we incur in pursuing any claim against you. We cannot be held responsible for the actions or behaviour of other guests or individuals who have no connection with your booking arrangements or with us.
17. Our Responsibilities
- We will accept responsibility for the arrangements we agree to provide or arrange for you as an "organiser" under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018, as set out below and as such, we are responsible for the proper provision of all travel services included in your package, as set out in your confirmation invoice. Subject to these Booking Conditions, if we or our suppliers negligently perform or arrange those services and we don't remedy or resolve your complaint within a reasonable period of time, and this has affected the enjoyment of your package holiday you may be entitled to an appropriate price reduction or compensation or both. You must inform us without undue delay of any failure to perform or improper performance of the travel services included in this package. The level of any such price reduction or compensation will be calculated taking into consideration all relevant factors such as but not limited to: following the complaints procedure as described in these Booking Conditions and the extent to which ours or our employees' or suppliers' negligence affected the overall enjoyment of your holiday. Please note that it is your responsibility to show that we or our supplier(s) have been negligent if you wish to make a claim against us.
- the acts and/or omissions of the person affected; or
- the acts and/or omissions of a third party unconnected with the provision of the services contracted for and which were unforeseeable or unavoidable; or
- Events Beyond Our Control (as defined in clause 11).
- loss of and/or damage to any luggage or personal possessions and money: the maximum amount we will have to pay you in respect of these claims is an amount equivalent to the excess on your insurance policy which applies to this type of loss per person in total because you are required to have adequate insurance in place to cover any losses of this kind.
- Claims not falling under (a) above and which don't involve injury, illness or death: the maximum amount we will have to pay you in respect of these claims is up to three times the price paid by or on behalf of the person(s) affected in total. This maximum amount will only be payable where everything has gone wrong and you or your party has not received any benefit at all from your booking.
- The extent of our liability will in all cases be limited as if we were carriers under the appropriate Conventions, which include The Athens Convention (with respect to sea travel); The Berne/Cotif Convention (with respect to rail travel) and The Paris Convention (with respect to hotel arrangements). You can ask for copies of these Conventions from our offices. Please contact us. In addition, you agree that the operating carrier or transport company's own 'Conditions of Carriage' will apply to you on that journey. When arranging transportation for you, we rely on the terms and conditions contained within these international conventions and those 'Conditions of Carriage'. You acknowledge that all of the terms and conditions contained in those 'Conditions of Carriage' form part of your contract with us, as well as with the transport company and that those 'Conditions of Carriage' shall be deemed to be included by reference into this contract.
- When making any payment, we are entitled to deduct any money which you have received or are entitled to receive from the transport provider or hotelier for the complaint or claim in question.
- It is a condition of our acceptance of liability under this clause that you notify any claim to us and our supplier(s) strictly in accordance with the complaints procedure set out in these conditions.
- Where any payment is made, the person(s) receiving it (and their parent or guardian if under 18 years) must also assign to us or our insurers any rights they may have to pursue any third party and must provide ourselves and our insurers with all assistance we may reasonably require.
- which on the basis of the information given to us by you concerning your booking prior to our accepting it, we could not have foreseen you would suffer or incur if we breached our contract with you;
- relate to any business;
- indirect or consequential loss of any kind.
- We will not accept responsibility for services or facilities which do not form part of our agreement or where they are not advertised on our website. . For example any excursion you book whilst away, or any service or facility which your hotel or any other supplier agrees to provide for you.
- Where it is impossible for you to return to your departure point as per the agreed return date of your package, due to "unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances", we shall provide you with any necessary accommodation (where possible, of a comparable standard) for a period not exceeding three nights per person. Please note that the 3 night cap does not apply to persons with reduced mobility, pregnant women or unaccompanied minors, nor to persons needing specific medical assistance, provided we have been notified of these particular needs at least 48 hours before the start of your holiday. For the purposes of this clause, "unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances" mean warfare, acts of terrorism, significant risks to human health such as the outbreak of serious disease at the travel destination or natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes or weather conditions which make it impossible to travel safely back to your departure point.
18. Excursions
Excursions or other tours that you may choose to book or pay for whilst you are on holiday are not part of your contracted arrangements with us. For any excursion or other tour that you book, your contract will be with the operator of the excursion or tour and not with us. We are not responsible for the provision of the excursion or tour or for anything that happens during the course of its provision by the operator.
19. Insolvency Protection
In accordance with the requirements of the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018, we provide full financial protection for all package holidays that we sell, by way of a separate account held by HSBC.
If you book arrangements other than package holiday from us, your monies will not be financially protected. Please ask us for further details.
20. Passport, Visa and Immigration Requirements & Health Formalities
It is your responsibility to check and fulfill the passport, visa, health and immigration requirements applicable to your itinerary. We can only provide general information about this. You must check requirements for your own specific circumstances with the relevant Embassies and/or Consulates and your own doctor as applicable. Requirements do change and you must check the up to date position in good time before departure.
Most countries now require passports to be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. If your passport is in its final year, you should check with the Embassy of the country you are visiting. For further information contact the Passport Office on 0870 5210410 or visit https://www.gov.uk/browse/citizenship/passports .
Special conditions apply for travel to the USA, and all passengers must have individual machine readable passports. Please check https://uk.usembassy.gov . For European holidays you should obtain a completed and issued form EHIC prior to departure.
Up to date travel advice can be obtained from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, visit https://www.gov.uk/travelaware .
Non British passport holders, including other EU nationals, should obtain up to date advice on passport and visa requirements from the Embassy, High Commission or Consulate of your destination or country(ies) through which you are travelling.
We do not accept any responsibility if you cannot travel, or incur any other loss because you have not complied with any passport, visa, immigration requirements or health formalities. You agree to reimburse us in relation to any fines or other losses which we incur as a result of your failure to comply with any passport, visa, immigration requirements or health formalities.
21. Conditions of Suppliers
Many of the services which make up your holiday are provided by independent suppliers. Those suppliers provide these services in accordance with their own terms and conditions which will form part of your contract with us. Some of these terms and conditions may limit or exclude the supplier's liability to you, usually in accordance with applicable International Conventions. Copies of the relevant parts of these terms and conditions are available on request from us or the supplier concerned.
22. Prompt Assistance
If, whilst you are on holiday, you find yourself in difficulty for any reason, we will offer you such prompt assistance as is appropriate in the circumstances. In particular, we will provide you with appropriate information on health services, local authorities and consular assistance, and assistance with distance communications and finding alternative travel arrangements. Where you require assistance which is not owing to any failure by us, our employees or sub-contractors we will not be liable for the costs of any alternative travel arrangements or other such assistance you require. Any supplier or transport supplier may however pay for or provide refreshments and/or appropriate accommodation and you should make a claim directly to them. Subject to the other terms of these Booking Conditions, we will not be liable for any costs, fees or charges you incur in the above circumstances, if you fail to obtain our prior authorisation before making your own travel arrangements. Furthermore, we reserve the right to charge you a fee for our assistance in the event that the difficulty is caused intentionally by you or a member of your party, or otherwise through your or your party's negligence.
23. Delays, Missed Transport Arrangements and other Travel Information
If you or any member of your party misses a transport arrangement, it is cancelled or you are subject to a delay of over 3 hours for any reason, you must contact us and the transport supplier concerned immediately.
We cannot accept liability for any delay which is due to any of the reasons set out in clause 11 of these Booking Conditions.
24. Foreign Office Advice
You are responsible for making yourself aware of Foreign Office advice in regard to the safety of the countries and areas in which you will be travelling and to make your decisions accordingly. Advice from the Foreign Office to avoid or leave a particular country may constitute Events Beyond Our Control. (See clause 11).

All the support were excellent, caring, kind and supportive. They cycled with me most of the route. Nothing was an issue or a bother for them. Could not praise them enough all three of them. Well done I would certainly book again with Peak Tours
Day 2 is magical but all the days are interesting and varied. Take your time and remember to stop for photos! The Peak Tours van will always be there for you!
“Loved the varied route and the opportunity to see some of Hadrian’s Wall and other historical features along the way.”
“The route was beautiful and exactly as described”.
It was a wonderful 3 day cycle ride. Thank you.
Brilliant first Peak Tours holiday which I thoroughly enjoyed. I will definitely be looking to book another one sometime soon.
I would definitely come on another of your tours. Peak Tours came highly recommended to me and this is fully justified.
Good places for evening meals, breakfasts were great. Van snacks and lunches were good to keep us going. PT always answer any questions in the notes and on hand on e-mail for anything specific.
Having done previous routes I knew I could rely on your communication. Well organised as ever. Great support but with no fuss.

Hadrian's Cycleway - Route 72
Hadrian's Cycleway is a 170-mile exploration into Britain’s past. As well as magnificent coastal views and breathtaking countryside you’ll see the famous wall itself, Roman forts and museums, quaint villages and attractive market towns, all set in a World Heritage Site.

Carlisle Castle on Hadrians Cycleway, National Route 72
172.8 miles, 278.1 kilometres
14 hours 30 minutes 57 hours 30 minutes
32.2% Traffic-free | 97.7% Asphalt, 1.2% Unsealed loose, 1.1% Unsealed firm
Important info
As part of this route, you'll need to take the ferry across the Tyne to South Shields. Ferries depart every 30 minutes. For more information, visit the Tyne and Wear transport website.
Route section suspended
The section of Hadrian's Cycleway, Route 72, south of Sellafield station has been suspended until further notice because of coastal erosion.
If you need to travel south of Sellafield, we recommend using the Northern Rail service between Seascale and Sellafield.
Hadrian’s Cycleway, National Cycle Route 72, takes you on a ride through some of England’s most wild and dramatic countryside.
Follow the line of the Roman frontier for 170 miles (274 kilometres) from Ravenglass in Cumbria to South Shields in Tyne & Wear.
Along the way you’ll take in magnificent coastal views, breathtaking countryside, Roman forts and museums, inspiring modern attractions, quaint villages and attractive market towns, all set in a World Heritage Site. This cycle route has it all.
Hadrian’s Cycleway begins at the Glannaventa Roman Bath House, a short ride or walk from Ravenglass.
The route passes Ravenglass station and crosses the estuary on the railway bridge.
From here you will travel on mainly quiet roads and off-road paths through the villages of Holmrook, Drigg and Seascale, then past Sellafield nuclear plant before turning away from the coast towards the small town of Egremont.
Further on you will join the Sea to Sea (C2C) Route 71 and the Tracks of the Ironmasters which will take you into Whitehaven.
Western Lake District Tourism has plenty of suggestions for places of interest to visit around Ravenglass and Whitehaven including the heritage Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway and Muncaster Castle.
The route, from Ravenglass in Cumbria to South Shields in Tyne & Wear, is 174 miles (280 km).
Most people are able to complete the route in 3 days, but for those wanting to stop at the numerous attractions along the way, it is likely to take 4-5 days.
Please note there are sections of the Hadrian's Cycleway route that are not part of the National Cycle Network.
- Ravenglass to Whitehaven - 22 miles (35.5 km)
- Whitehaven to Maryport - 15 miles (24 km)
- Maryport to Silloth - 16 miles (25.5 km)
- Silloth to Angerton - 12 miles (19.5 km)
- Angerton to Carlisle - 23 miles (37 km)
- Carlisle to Brampton - 15 miles (24 km)
- Brampton to Haltwhistle - 14 miles (22.5 km)
- Haltwhistle to Hexham - 22 miles (35.5 km)
- Hexham to Prudhoe - 11 miles (17.5 km)
- Prudhoe to Newcastle - 13 miles (21 km)
- Newcastle to South Shields - 11 miles (17.5 km)
The route is a mixture of on-road and traffic-free sections.
It runs mainly on country lanes and quiet roads, interspersed with sections of traffic-free path, promenade and riverside path.
As most of the route is either on minor roads or well surfaced off-road tracks most bikes are suitable. We would recommend all tyres apart from full slick or racing bike tyres.
The coastal sections at either end of the route are relatively flat, but there are a few steep, short hills in the central section.
Route section suspended south of Sellafield station
The section of Hadrian's Cycleway, route 72, between Sellafield station and Seascale has been suspended until further notice because of coastal erosion.
If you need to travel between Sellafield and Seascale, we recommend using the train between these two stations.
The England Coast Path, which follows the same route in this location, utilises a narrow bridge and stepped route through the area – this alternative England Coast Path is only suitable for walking, and not for people using bikes or adapted cycles.
Finding a solution at Sellafield
We are currently conducting outline feasibility studies and investigating options to reinstate the National Cycle Network, with alignments being considered along the coast or inland.
The study will run until Spring 2024, when our findings will be published, and further feasibility and construction work will be funding dependant.
Seascale to Ravenglass:
Please also note that some of the roads between Seascale and Ravenglass are no longer part of the National Cycle Network following Reclassification .
Consequently, until an alternative route is found, Hadrian's Cycleway, route 72, will end at Sellafield railway station and the route signage will be covered over from this point south, down to the original end point at Ravenglass.
Whitehaven to Silloth
From Whitehaven you continue on a mixture of quiet roads and off-road paths, passing through the towns of Workington and Maryport, where you can visit the Senhouse Roman Museum, and then the small coastal resort of Allonby.
The section between Maryport and Allonby provides great off-road cycling with beautiful views out across the Solway Firth.
Cycle hire for all types of cyclist is available at Solway Cycle Hire in Allonby for those who would like to stay in the area.
If you're looking for places to stay and things to do along the Solway coast then have a look at the Visit Allerdale website .
It has plenty of suggestions for additional cycle routes in the area as well.
Silloth to Carlisle
At Silloth the routes heads away from the coast for a while taking you down quiet roads through the north Cumbrian countryside. It then joins the Solway coast at Anthorn with spectacular views across to Scotland.
The route goes past the RSPB Campfield Marsh reserve and just beyond you will come to Bowness-on-Solway and the start of Hadrian’s Wall.
The cycleway now follows the route of Hadrian’s Wall taking you into the centre of Carlisle. If you are stopping in Carlisle then a visit to Carlisle Castle is easily done.
Carlisle to Hexham
Heading towards Haltwhistle and Hexham from Carlisle sees the end of the flat, low lying terrain along the west Cumbrian coastal plain.
Now there are some hills to tackle as you make your way across the North Pennines.
However, there are plenty of reasons to stop and explore. Between Brampton and Gilsland you pass Lanercost Priory, and a little further on near Greenhead you can visit both Thirlwall Castle and Walltown Roman Army Museum .
Roman attractions are numerous along this section with visits to Birdoswald Roman Fort, Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolanda all possible.
To find out more visit Hadrian’s Wall Country website .
Hexham to South Shields
It’s downhill all the way now (nearly) with Hadrian’s Cycleway taking you from Hexham along the Tyne Valley and into Newcastle.
From North Shields, you'll need to take the ferry across the Tyne to South Shields. Ferries depart every 30 minutes. For more information visit the Tyne and Wear transport website.
Once you reach South Shields, it's a short ride to the Roman Arbeia Gatehouse.
Alternatively, you can stay in North Shields and continue on route 1 to Tynemouth and Tynemouth Castle.
Hadrian’s Wall Cycleway Development Project
In 2018, the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development supported the upgrade of route signing associated with Route 72, Hadrian's Cycleway, in Cumbria. Over 130 new signs were installed along the route.
Hadrian's Cycleway is a 174 mile coast to coast route crossing the north of England between Cumbria and Northumberland.

Quick facts, about & details.
This event covers the whole length of Hadrian’s Wall in three days. You cycle the first part, walk the central and more mountainous part, and cycle the last part. The walking part covers some of the finest and best preserved sections of the Wall.
It is possible to add an extra hiking day into the itinerary to break Day 3 into two shorter hiking days – please see our Hadrian’s Wall Cycle-Walk-Walk-Cycle event.
We recommend walking Hadrian’s Wall West to East (left to right). The reason for this is that the prevailing winds in the UK are from the West, meaning you will, in all likelihood, have the wind on your backs during the walk. This is a much nicer way of walking. Our itineraries follow this schedule. We can of course organise the same itinerary ‘the other way round’. Should you prefer this, then please just let us know at point of booking.

The route passes through some of Northern England’s most beautiful scenery and on the walk you will enjoy some of the finest and best preserved sections of the wall. The terrain varies between the peaceful Solway Firth, the cities of Carlisle and Newcastle, and the wild mountain scenery of the central section of the wall. The walking is along the wall from Greenhead to Chollerford. The cycling is primarily along the Hadrian’s Wall cycle route, which combines low-traffic country roads with off-road sections. Evening meals and lunches
You can purchase evening meals either at the accommodation or nearby. When our event planners send you the schedule with itinerary you could prearrange directly with the accommodation or during the walk.
For lunches we would suggest bringing some of your own favourite snack bars and then asking the accommodation for a packed lunch for the following day and also supplementing that at stops en-route.
Accommodation
Accommodation is generally at B&B, guest houses and small hotels. Once booked in, your event planner will send you a list of your booked accommodation. It is possible to adjust according to preference at this stage so please mention it if you wish to change.
Need a guide?
If you would prefer to have a guide for your walk, even just for one day, then we are happy to help. We can provide a qualified leader (also first aid qualified) to lead your trek or on just one of the sections. Just ask us. A guide can not only take the stress out of navigation, but you will also find them a great asset in terms of providing an insight into all things environment and nature.
After you book
After placing your booking with us, you will in the first instance receive an automated email from our system confirming receipt of your reservation. If you don’t receive it, it is worth checking your spam/clutter folder.
In the process of placing your booking, you will generally set up an access password to our online gateway where you can review the details of the booking.
Your personal event planner will then be in touch with you to start to confirm the details. This contact will usually be taken up in the working day after receipt of your booking, but may, in busy times, take a little longer. The event planner will then liaise with you regarding the details of the course. If you have any specific requirements, please do mention it at this stage.
At the end of your trip
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end at some point and when you arrive at Segedunum, you have one of several options. If you have not booked an additional night’s stay in Newcastle then we can transfer your luggage to a location of your choice.
Some people like to treat themselves to a night’s stay in Newcastle at the end. And why not? You’ve earned it. We suggest a night near the Quayside overlooking the river. You can arrange this as an optional add on with your event planner.
We run the Hadrian’s Wall Cycle-Walk-Cycle from April – October. To book any number of participants on to an event, simply select the date in the calendar and follow the booking procedure. You will then receive an automated confirmation and full details will follow from our office in due course.

Maximum Adventure exceeded expectations, planning a trip for me last minute and off season through the glorious Lake District. The hotels were top rate, as was the food and my daily gluten free sandwich. Nathalie got the route guide sent to me in a couple of days and the baggage service was impeccable. It was the only tour guide company that responded immediately to my last minute request. Looking forward to more adventures with your company!!!
David and I walked the Speyside Way in September 2023 and very much enjoyed the adventure. Maximum Adventure Ltd organised our nightly accommodation and uplifting of our luggage in a seamless manner, which made the whole trip so easy with no stress. This is the second time that I have personally used Maximum Adventures Ltd and I would recommend them to others as they offer a friendly and efficient service.
We realy appreciated the tour we did on Hadrians Wall path in May.Beautiful scenery, decent weather, god arrangements including lodging, transport, bagagehandling etc. We came well prepared . In this preparation Maximum adventures gave us great support, as we are coming from abroad with no knowledge of conditions on the path. We had great BnBs and could concentrate on de daily walks that gave us great pleasure.Thank you England and Hadrians Wall path for your friendly reception and well mantained walking path.Thank you Maximum Adventures for your good service. We would love to come back in the future.
Maximum Adventure did a great job for us. With less than a month's notice, it set up an itinerary, lodging and luggage porterage for a walk from Carlisle to Newcastle, England along Hadrian's Wall. The lodging was fantastic, as was the itinerary and support during the walk. We'd definitely use Maximum Adventure again and would recommend them without reservation!
I was part of a climb on 23/09, didn't think I would make ut, but I did. The descent was a different story.. I got jelly legs and lost my confidence. If it wasn't for James, my Sherpa would never have made it. Can't thank him enough, Will, met you briefly. Both of them were very knowledgeable, we had the most amazing views at the summit...the pain is still worth it and
I walked the West Highland Way with my dad and brother. The organisation was excellent by Samantha. Itinerary and instructions were clear and all the bookings and luggage transfers went smoothly. As a result we were able to ensure the fantastic walk and not worry about anything. I would happily recommend Maximum Adventure to others.
Absolutely brilliant guide - knowledgeable, interesting and humorous in addition to looking after our safety so well - making sure we ate and suggesting when to layer up! Would highly recommend!
We just got home from our 8-days Hadrian's Wall hike and we just loved it!Everything was perfectly organized! We had great B&Bs and hotels with very friendly, welcoming and helpful staff. Our favorite was the Dacre House with Clare. But then again, all were great! The luggage was always at the day's destination, no matter how early we got to the accommodation. The description of how to get to the accommodations were clear and precise. The road map and the guide book were waiting for us as we got to the first B&B and were very helpful and interestingThanks, Maximum Adventure!
Praise for the West Highland Hike and the Maximum Adventure planners, esp. our planner Samantha. Great experience in every regard.
Booked for the 3 UK Peaks adventure, it was organised perfectly and everything when to plan. Accommodation was good, transport excellent, our guide (Patrick) brilliant, so cannot fault the trip and adventure. I personally expected too much from myself and was unable to fully summit as this adventure is not for beginners, I climbed Kilimanjaro in 2003 when I was 42 and twenty years later, although relatively fit, my endurance didn't last. So I did a half summit for Ben Nevis & Scafell, thanks to Patrick for letting go back down on my own, it was brilliant. With Snowdon, a half summit is tricky as you can't descend the way you go up, so I decided to do some hiking in the area while the rest of the group did the climb. I took a chance and went to the ticket office and managed to get a single return ticket up to the summit of Snowdon at 9am which returned down by 11.30am. I was hoping to see my group on top and spring a surprise but the weather was terrible. I highly recommend the trip but make sure you are fit enough otherwise as there is an emphasis on time, so a slow walk up is going to slow everyone down and really delay the trip. Have Fun, Simon Bradish

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
