Stranded at Harishchandragad, one die, five rescued

The six-member team began the trek from tolar khind in pune district, but lost track due to heavy rainfall and dense forest.

Pune: One trekker died and five others were rescued from Harishchandragad in Akole tehsil of Ahmednagar district by forest department and police staff after the group from Pune was stranded for more than two days, said officials.

Gitte died of hypothermia at around 11:30 am on August 2. (HT PHOTO)

The deceased has been identified as Balu Natahram Gitte, 35, from Lohegaon and hailed from Yaldari in Latur district. The other members of the trekking team were Anil Mohan Ambekar, Govind Dattaraya Ambekar, Tukaram Asaram Tipale, Mahadu Jagan Bhutekar and Hariom Vitthal Borude from Lohegaon. All were working dumper drivers at a stone crushing firm in Lonikand area of the Pune city.

According to the Ahmednagar police, as the entry of heavy vehicles in the city was banned on August 1 due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, Gitte planned a visit to the Harishchandragad with others after seeing the reviews of the picturesque spot during rainy season on social media as it was day off for them. The six-member team began the trek from Tolar Khind in Pune district, but lost track due to heavy rainfall and dense forest.

Ganesh Ingale, assistant inspector, Rajur police station, said, “As they were not professional trekkers, nobody carried any safety equipment, food or clothing. They had to spend the night at the forest without food as they could not contact anyone on mobile as there was no network signal. Gitte died of hypothermia at around 11:30 am on August 2.”

Leaving two members with the body, the rest went in search of help and later meet some Mumbai-based trekkers, who offered them food and contacted a local guide named Balu Renegade. Renegade received the alert on the evening of August 2.

The rescue team comprising forest, police and locals found the missing trekkers at around noon on August 3. They were safely shifted to a safe locality at the base of Harishchandragad and immediately attended to by medical personnel on-site before shifted to a private medical hospital.

Ingale said, “As per autopsy report, trekker died of hypothermia caused due to prolonged exposure to excessive cold. We have handed over the body to relatives after post-mortem and have filed an accidental death report.”

“There is no point in hurrying because you are not actually going anywhere. However far or long you plod, you are always in the same place: in the Jungle of Mountain.”

On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.

Harishchandragad

Harishchandragad is a hill fort in the Ahmednagar district of India. Its history is linked with that of Malshej Ghat, kothale village and it has played a major role in guarding and controlling the surrounding region.

Harishchandragad Fort is quite ancient, considered to be from the medieval period. The Great sage Changdev (one who wrote the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate at Harishchandragad in 14th century. The caves at Harishchandragad are also from the same period. Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls.(https://www.facebook.com/walkingsherpa/)

This is the topmost point on Harishchandragad Fort. It is the second highest peak in Maharashtra after kalsubai. Leopards are seen in the forests beyond this peak. From here we can have a glimpse of the whole range of Naneghat and the forts near Murbad (This will be visited only if time permits.)

Konkan Kada:

The most interesting point on Harishchandragad Fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan with a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and sunset. This cliff is not just vertical; it is an overhang, almost like a cobra's hood.

Kedareshwar:

The cave of Kedareshwar has a big Shivlinga, which is totally surrounded by water.

“Jungles and mountains are not like other spaces. To begin with, they are cubic. Their trees surround you, loom over you, press in from all sides. Woods choke off views & leave you muddled & without bearings. They make you feel small & confused & vulnerable, like a small child lost in a crowd of strange legs. Stand in a desert or prairie & you know you are in a big space. Stand in the woods and you only sense it. They are vast, featureless nowhere. And they are alive.”

“Hiking is a bit like life:

The journey only requires you to put one foot in front of the other…again and again and again.

And if you allow yourself the opportunity to be present throughout the entirety of the Harishchandragad trek,

you will witness beauty every step of the way,

not just at the summit”

Where to Stay If you want(In case):

There are lot of caves on Harishchandragad Fort behind Ganesh temple and in Harishchandreshwar temple so at the most more than 100 people can be easily accomodated plus there are 2-3 houses belonging to people of Pachnai village hence getting food and tea is not a problem. In the water tank at Harishchandreshwar temple, there is abundant crystal clear drinking water available.

Also at base village Pachnai there are few houses who can allow to accomodate if requested.

we did descending at night it was completely dark, but night is night you never get a chance to walk in this type of night so we had enjoyed a lot, the Harishchandragad trek became adventurous more than just trek because we were thinking of trek would completed during day light but we got late and some of new fellows were not carrying torch light, big lesson to them always carry lights during trek.(https://www.facebook.com/walkingsherpa/)

Photo of A walk in The Mountain:Trek to Harishchandragad via Nalichi Vaat. 69/70 by PANKAJ KUMAR

finally we reached to base village.we got our bus after some more walk at 1 am of Monday morning. In monsoon, proper care should be taken while trekking in the rockface after Tolar khind. It is advisable not to walk on the rock face in monsoon particularly during night where one can experience heavy rainfall with thunder strikes.

Harishchandragad is also known as trekker's paradise as rappelling, rock climbing & valley crossing can be done simultaneously in one trek itself. Harishchandragad is also famous as the best fort in Maharashtra for camping. There are nearly 9 caves in total inculding 2 big caves on Harishchandragad which can accomodate around 100-150 campers.

“Distance changes utterly when you take the world on foot. A mile becomes a long way, two miles literally considerable, ten miles whopping, fifty miles at the very limits of conception. The world, you realize, is enormous in a way that only you and a small community of fellow hikers know. Planetary scale is your little secret.

Life takes on a neat simplicity, too. Time ceases to have any meaning. When it is dark, you go to bed, and when it is light again you get up, and everything in between is just in between. It’s quite wonderful, really.

Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.

“We don’t stop hiking because we grow old –

We grow old because we stop hiking.”

Keep hiking cheers!!!!

Several carvings inside this cave indicate that it was built during the Medieval era. As you can see, the Shivlinga is surrounded by four pillars. Located in the middle of Kedareshwar cave, there are four pillars that symbolize the four Yugas: Satya Yuga, Tretha Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. The cave stands on one of these pillars, as three of the pillars have fallen. Accordingly, it is believed the end of the world will come when this pillar breaks off.

Loyality Programs

Our community is an integral part of us and we take pride in our trekkers and climbers. When you complete at least three days on any trek or expedition with us, you become eligible for our membership and referral programs.

  • Over time we have found this number to be optimum when it comes to ensuring personalised attention to every member of our group.
  • On mountaineering expeditions this number is even smaller. Our group sizes are capped at 12 members ensuring a Participants : HAP Ratio of 2:1.

  • We follow a rolling campsite model.
  • We are constantly exploring and introducing new trails to reduce the burden on existing ones.

For us, a successful summit is not about reaching the highest point of a mountain but about making it safely back to base.

  • To ensure this:
  • Every region of ours is mapped with an emergency evacuation plan.
