Tips for visiting Hoover Dam

Where is the hoover dam located.

The Hoover Dam is on the border of Nevada and Arizona, on the Colorado River in Black Canyon. It’s just 40 minutes from Sin City and one of the best stops on a road trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon .

You can visit the Hoover Dam by car or take a tour from Las Vegas. An organized tour is the most convenient option especially if you don’t have a vehicle or don’t want to drive.

Directions to Hoover Dam from Las Vegas

The Hoover Dam is just 37 miles southeast of Las Vegas, so the drive only takes about 40 minutes.

If you don’t have a vehicle, renting a car in Las Vegas is the best option since you can go on your own schedule and spend as much time at the dam as you want. Plus, you’re free to take any detours or pit stops you’d like. The directions to the Hoover Dam from Las Vegas are quite simple:

• Take I-515 S/US-93 S and follow it for about 34 miles to NV-172 (Exit 2).
• Continue on NV-172, which converts to Hoover Dam Access Rd. You’ll see signs for Hoover Dam bridge parking and the Visitor Center.

Of course, if you don’t want to drive, you can take a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas . This is definitely the easiest option since most of the tours include the Hoover Dam shuttle from Las Vegas and a live guide. I recommend this full or half-day tour , which passes through Boulder City and Lake Mead before arriving at the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. 1. Hoover Dam Visitor Center

The first place you should check out is the Hoover Dam Visitor Center . It costs $10 to enter and see the informational exhibits. Here, you can learn more about the history of the Hoover Dam , its legacy, and the power systems and infrastructure that keep it functioning. You can also watch a short documentary about the dam’s construction, including the engineering prowess and manpower it took to build such a huge structure.

The Visitor Center is also where you can purchase tickets for a Hoover Dam tour . There are three tours to choose from:

Hoover Dam self-guided tour

The self-guided Hoover Dam tour costs $10 and is the tour that’s included in your Visitor Center admission. You’ll be able to walk through the narrated exhibits and watch the historical Hoover Dam film. The tour also includes access to the Visitor Center observation decks, which offer panoramic views of the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, the Colorado River, and the Bypass Bridge in the distance.

Guided Powerplant Tour

The powerplant tour through Hoover Dam costs $15 and grants you access to the dam’s original construction tunnels. A guide will lead you through the passageway and take you to the Nevada Powerhouse to see its commercial generators. You can even feel the force of the water rushing through the pipes below. This tour also includes everything in the self-guided tour.

Guided Dam Tour

For $30, you can take the complete Hoover Dam tour , which includes everything in the powerplant tour, plus an elevator ride to the inner workings of the dam. Take a walk through the old inspection tunnels and check out the ventilation shaft, where you can also see the Colorado River churning. It’s the best deal if you’re interested in the behind-the-scenes logistics of the Hoover Dam.

2. Hoover Dam Bridge – Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

When you visit the Hoover Dam , you’ll also be able to see the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge . From here, you’ll get some of the most impressive views of the dam and its surroundings.

This Hoover Dam Bridge was named after former Nevada Governor Mike O’Callaghan and football player Pat Tillman, who died while on military duty in Afghanistan. It was built to provide a safer route over the dam and ease traffic congestion.

The arch bridge runs across the Colorado River, connecting Nevada and Arizona and measuring 1,900 feet long. Since it opened in 2010, it’s been the widest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere, and the second-highest bridge in the U.S., at 890 feet tall.

You can walk or drive across the bridge, although you’ll have to get out of your car if you want to get the full view.

3. Hoover Dam Lookout – Kingman Wash

Another one of the best ways to see Hoover Dam is by visiting Kingman Wash . This Hoover Dam Lookout is on the Arizona side of the dam and has the most breathtaking views of the massive structure. From here, you can take in the magnitude of the manmade dam and witness the rushing water while glimpsing Lake Mead, Black Canyon, and the desert environment in the distance.

Best of all, this overlook tends to be less crowded than the others, so you can get a front-row seat to the beautiful views. To get there, follow the Hoover Dam Bridge into Arizona and take the Kingman Wash exit. You’ll find the access road, which is unpaved, and you can take that about a half-mile to the overlook.

If you’re up for it, you can continue along this trail and see the stunning expanse of Fortification Hill, Black Mesa, and the surrounding mountains.

4. Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

I’ve mentioned that you can get nice views of Lake Mead from Hoover Dam , but it’s also worth visiting this place for yourself. Lake Mead was formed as a result of the construction of the Hoover Dam and spans 247 square miles. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is the largest of its kind in the U.S.

4. Historic Railroad Hiking Trail at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The calm blue water of the lake is the perfect contrast to the concrete and steel parts of the Hoover Dam . It’s worth spending some time in this area, especially if you enjoy water sports like boating, kayaking and swimming. If you prefer on-land activities, you’ll find hiking trails here, including the Railroad Tunnel Trail .

This family-friendly trail starts at the Lake Mead Visitor Center and has sturdy terrain and signposts, so it’s quite easy. Since it travels along the Boulder City Highway, you’ll be able to see the Hoover Dam’s construction tunnels while you hike. You’ll also see the Hoover Dam Boneyard, the Lake Mead – Lakeview Overlook, and natural scenery, so it’s one of the best hikes near Las Vegas .

5. Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail

Hiking the Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail is one of the best things to do at the Hoover Dam , especially if you love outdoor activities like us. This 6-mile off-road hike is a bit of a challenge, but most people can do the first mile or so without any problems. Just be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks and to dress appropriately for the weather.

The trail has a few areas where you’ll have to scramble over boulders and watch your footing, but it’s worth the effort. As you make your way through the wash canyon, you can find scenic grottoes, natural pools, and maybe some bighorn sheep.

Some of the hot springs in the area have dried up, but there are a few you can swim in, and there are some thermal waterfalls, too. It’s one of the coolest places to visit near the Hoover Dam , so I highly recommend it.

6. Dam Builders Memorial at Hoover Dam

By the entrance to the Hoover Dam , you can see the beautiful, winged figures built by Norwegian sculptor Oskar J. W. Hansen. The figures represent guardian angels looking over the dam, and they’re accompanied by a plaque dedicated to the people who died during the dam’s construction.

The plaque was on the canyon wall on the Arizona side of the dam but was moved so it would be closer to the sculptures. The accompanying plaque reads, “They died to make the desert bloom. The United States of America will continue to remember that many who toiled here found their final rest while engaged in the building of this dam. The United States of America will continue to remember the services of all who labored to clothe with substance the plans of those who first visioned the building of this dam.”

Visiting this little piece of the dam is even more meaningful after going through the Hoover Dam Visitor Center and learning about the history of this monument.

7. Hemenway Park

Not far from the dam, off Highway 93, you’ll find Hemenway Park in Boulder City. I recommend taking this detour to visit the park, get some fresh air, and spot some wildlife.

Hemenway Park is a pleasant green space that’s perfect for the whole family. It’s mostly known for its herds of bighorn sheep, who often graze in the park. The bighorn sheep is Nevada’s state animal, so keep your eyes peeled for strays snacking on the grass or resting in the shade.

There are also tennis courts, picnic areas, and a playground at the park, so you can take a brief break here before continuing your journey to the Lake Mead and Hoover Dam area .

8. Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum

The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum is inside the Boulder Dam Hotel at 1305 Arizona Street. This is another Boulder City attraction near the Hoover Dam that you should add to your itinerary.

The museum chronicles the construction of the dam as well as the history of Boulder City through artifacts, photos, and an educational theater. Many of the objects on display date back to the Great Depression, offering a look back at the social and political climate of the time. You’ll also learn more about the Hoover Dam’s impact and how it paved the way for hydroelectric power and engineering.

The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum is free and open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

9. Nevada Southern Railroad Museum & other places to visit in Boulder City

Given its proximity to the Hoover Dam , Boulder City is a great place to explore during your trip, so I recommend spending a few hours here if you have time.

In addition to the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum and Hemenway Park, the city is home to the Southern Railroad Museum , one of the most popular attractions in Nevada . This museum has a collection of historic trains and locomotive models dating back as far as the 1840s. There are also interpretive exhibits and a 7-mile heritage railroad ride that you can enjoy. This family-friendly attraction is one of the best things to do near Hoover Dam with kids.

Another cool place to check out is Bootleg Canyon Park , a haven for mountain bikers and hikers. The cross-country and downhill trails here wind through the desert landscape and pass by some stunning viewpoints overlooking Lake Mead.

For a scenic change of pace, head to Veteran’s Memorial Park , a 25-acre green space with several sports fields and courts, a 3-acre fishing pond, a skatepark, and walking/biking paths. Another outdoor option is the Alan Bible Botanical Garden , which is home to various species of desert shrubs and cacti.

• The dam was built between 1931 and 1936 to hold back the waters of the Colorado River and supply hydroelectric power to the surrounding area, which was rapidly developing. Today, the Hoover Dam still fulfills this purpose and provides power to over a million people in three states and irrigates 2 million acres of land.
• The Hoover Dam’s height of 726.4 ft made it the world’s tallest dam until 1968 when it was surpassed by California’s Orville Dam (770 ft).
• The Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is the Western Hemisphere’s longest single-span concrete arch bridge . It replaced the portion of US-93 that crossed over the top of the dam to help ease traffic congestion.

• The construction of the Hoover Dam was a huge project and provided employment for thousands of people who were out of work due to the Great Depression. As these laborers flocked to the area, they needed a place to live, so Boulder City was built to house the workforce .

7 Must-Know Tips For Visiting The Hoover Dam

This post is all about The Hoover Dam, featuring seven must-know travel tips for visiting The Hoover Dam in Nevada!

I imagined visiting the Hoover Dam about a thousand times. I imagined the moment I first saw the giant slice of concrete, the moment I looked down and down and down, the moment I felt dizzy and excited, shocked and in awe.

This was years ago when I was in fourth grade. I had just finished reading The Titan’s Curse and I couldn’t shake Rick Riordan’s Hoover Dam description from my head.

“Then we straggled back toward the dam. It was cold and windy on top. On one side, a big lake spread out, ringed by barren desert mountains. On the other side, the dam dropped away like the world’s most dangerous skateboard ramp, down to the river seven hundred feet below, and water that churned from the dam’s vents.” Rick Riordan (From Percy Jackson & The Olympians, The Titan’s Curse)

Fast forward a decade and I’m now wedging a beat-up copy of The Titan’s Curse into our car’s map pocket. I didn’t consider the logistics of this trip. I probably should have. So as I’m heading out to see “The Greatest Dam In The World” (as Franklin D. Roosevelt called it), I have a dozen questions cycling through my head.

Does the Hoover Dam have an entrance fee? Can you park near the Hoover Dam? How far is the Hoover Dam from Vegas? How long does it take to visit the Hoover Dam? Is there anything to see at the Hoover Dam besides the dam itself?

The short answer: no, yes, further than you think, a half-day, yes. I promise I’ll get into more details in this travel guide.

Here are seven tips you need to know before visiting the Hoover Dam!

Know That Visiting The Hoover Dam Is Free

The Hoover Dam is free to visit. I came to the Hoover Dam, prepped with my National Park pass (which I absolutely did not need. The Hoover Dam isn’t even part of the National Park system. What was I thinking?), ready to bypass a hefty admission. After all, this is the Hoover Dam. I assumed it was going to cost an arm and a leg. And it can.

“Wait, Anshula,” you ask. “I thought you just said the Hoover Dam was free.”

Well…it depends on how you want to visit the Hoover Dam. Seeing the Hoover Dam is absolutely free . Touring the Hoover Dam is up-there in cost. And then there’s parking (ah, parking fees. I love you so). Parking at the parking garage costs $10. There’s free parking closer to the Arizona side of the dam, but it’s a walk (a giant, I-don’t-remember-signing-up-for-The Unlikely-Pilgrimmage-Of-Harold-Fry walk).

Note that the Hoover Dam’s tour packages are also tiered . So you’ll find an all-inclusive package (Guided Dam Tour), the mid-range package (Guided Powerplant Tour), and the Self-Guided Visitor Center Tour (the cheapest deal).

I really wanted to go on the Guided Dam Tour (you get to walk through inspection tunnels. need I say more?), but unfortunately, only the Self-Guided Tour was available when I visited the Hoover Dam.

Hoover Dam Travel Tip: Although you can officially purchase Hoover Dam tour tickets on the Bureau Of Reclamation website (I’ll link it here ), I highly recommend purchasing the tour in person! You’ll get a better feel of the area, what you can do, and whether or not the tour is a good fit for you.

For me, personally, the Self-Guided tour wasn’t worth it . It wasn’t the fault of the tour itself, we just weren’t well-matched (here’s my it’s not you, it’s me momen t). I mean, I loved the presentation and exhibits (they were thoughtful, to-the-point, and informative), but I have a body-numbing fear of heights so I couldn’t appreciate the full glory of the views from the observation deck.

I think that if you get a chance to go on the hour-long Guided Dam Tour, do it. And if you don’t, I recommend listening to this podcast episode during your Hoover Dam visit instead (it’s not officially an audio guide, but it works well as one).

Know Where To Park At The Hoover Dam

• Hoover Dam Parking Garage: This 450-plus space parking garage is right next to the Visitor’s Center. There are stunning views of Memorial Bridge from the upper levels of this garage. Although it will set you back $10, it’s the most convenient location.
• Initial Parking Lot: Drive past the Hoover Dam parking garage and you’ll see one outdoor lot up ahead. Due to its proximity to the Hoover Dam, this lot also costs $10.
• Arizona Side Parking Lots: Later on, as you drive closer to the Arizona side, farther and farther away from the dam, parking fees halt. I don’t recommend walking from these lots in the summer. The Arizona side parking lots are, at the very least, over a quarter of a mile away, which doesn’t seem like much on a cool weather day, but in the heat…(I don’t even want to think about it).

Hoover Dam Travel Tip: Mike-O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge has its own dedicated parking lot. If you’re interested in walking across the bridge, park here!

Know The Best Way To See The Hoover Dam

Grab a thesaurus. Look for the words big, huge, ginormous. Combine all the words suggested into one singular idea, one singular thought. The Hoover Dam is larger than that.

I find it hard to describe the Hoover Dam. It’s one of those places that pictures can’t capture fully . No matter how many angles I take, I can’t capture the depth and breadth of the Hoover Dam. I can’t capture the hollow space and the water that flows just beyond. I can’t capture the way the mud-colored mountains tighten the landscape. And I can’t capture feelings – the pride in people’s eyes as they snap a picture with the dam in the background, the laughter of kids as they bounce along the pathway screaming “look, look”, the erratic heartbeats of Hoover Dam visitors as they look down and down and down.

The best way to see the Hoover Dam is in person. You need to let the sight of the dam overwhelm you, amaze you, and inspire you.

Here are the best vantage points of the Hoover Dam:

• Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge Pedestrian Walkway: This is a wind-whipped path where you can see it all: the dam, Lake Mead, the mountains beyond. It’s also unbelievably high-up. I didn’t realize how far Memorial Bridge shoots up until a little too late. Although this walkway offers one of the best views of the Hoover Dam, my legs felt wobbly as soon as I neared the rail. My mind blanked, I forgot how to breathe, and I froze a fourth of the way down the path. If you have acrophobia, like me, I do not recommend this viewpoint at all. But if you don’t have a fear of heights, this might turn out to be your favorite viewpoint! It was just too much for this lil’ blogger to take.
• Observation Deck: This viewpoint was included in the self-guided tour package. I loved that I could see the hauntingly deep drop of the Hoover Dam from behind glass windows. There’s also an outdoor area perfect for grabbing a selfie with the dam! I didn’t venture out for long because I was still trying to regain my senses after Memorial Bridge but the view from here is incredible .
• Hoover Dam Bridge Bypass Trail: this isn’t really a trail. It’s a massive, paved walkway from the parking garage to the Hoover Dam. You’ll find thick crowds moving in one continuous photo-taking mass along the path. Hoover Dam Bridge Bypass Trail is one of the most accessible and popular Hoover Dam viewpoints.
• Initial Parking Lot: I was taken aback by the views from the first open parking lot past the parking garage. Smooth dark blue water stretched out to brown-toned rocky edges like a poured-in glaze. The cloudless sky above was bluer, brighter. And the mountains – oh my goodness, if I wasn’t a mountain person before, I was in that moment.

Know That The Hoover Dam Takes A Half-Day To See

I originally planned for the Hoover Dam to be a day trip from Las Vegas (it’s about a one-hour drive from The Strip). Including the tour, the dam takes four-ish hours to see (I think I would have spent longer had I been in a position to savor the views). Traffic from the entrance to the parking garage halted our trip a little (the line took thirty minutes to get through and it took us twenty minutes to find parking ).

If you’re visiting the Hoover Dam, plan to spend at least a half-day here.

Know What To Bring To The Hoover Dam

Before visiting the Hoover Dam, I wish I knew to leave my hat at home. Back then, I only knew that this part of Nevada was unshaded, so I happily planted my hat on top of my head and went out to explore the Hoover Dam area.

Big mistake.

The region right around the Hoover Dam is windy . If Chicago is one of the windiest cities, the Hoover Dam is definitely one of the windiest attractions in the United States. The winds here don’t howl, but they are big and strong and forceful. Imagine a parade of sumo wrestlers sneaking along a walkway and then hitting you, one at a time, at full blast. That’s what the winds at the Hoover Dam felt like. It’s a miracle my hat made it.

Hoover Dam Travel Tip: There are two security checkpoints at the Hoover Dam. The first checkpoint is a vehicle checkpoint (don’t bring any weapons or fireworks, etc). The second checkpoint happens when you enter the Visitor Center for the tour (it’s very TSA-like and yes, you need to take your shoes off).

Know Where To Eat Near The Hoover Dam

The food at the Hoover Dam is exactly what you’d expect: typical tourist trap. I usually don’t dine in heavily-trafficked areas, but I made an exception for the Hoover Dam. Remember when I said I visited the Hoover Dam because I read about it in The Titan’s Curse?

Well, there’s this scene:

So I ended up ordering this…

I’m the ultimate tourist.

On that note, I’d highly recommend bringing your own food and just eating it in your car (since food isn’t allowed in any of the Hoover Dam buildings). You could also picnic at Lake Mead National Recreation Area ($25 per vehicle) or dine in Boulder City.

If I could redo my trip, I’d visit Dam Roast House & Browder Bookstore first and grab a specialty latte and a filling breakfast-to-go (alongside some light snacks).

Know That The Hoover Dam Is Worth Visiting

Is the Hoover Dam worth visiting? Yes! Absolutely. Visiting the Hoover Dam felt like a bucket-list moment ticked off. It’s one of those places that’s 100% more magical in person than in pictures. The scale. The brilliance. The grandeur.

Sure, I made tons of travel mistakes while visiting the Hoover Dam (who doesn’t?), but you live and you learn. And even with my fear of heights, I don’t regret visiting the Hoover Dam one bit . It was everything I dreamed it would be and so much more.

A Day Trip to the Hoover Dam From Las Vegas

The Hoover dam is approximately 45 minutes away from the Las Vegas strip at a distance of 33 miles from Las Vegas Blvd. As a day trip, this is a good diversion from the typical Las Vegas action as you will see some of the deserts of the Southwest and you'll be able to see a modern day engineering marvel.

Before you start with Dam jokes you must know that a diversion away from the Las Vegas strip to the Hoover Dam will surprise you. Yes, you will still tell a "Dam" joke if you are traveling with your kids or if you still have the ability to be silly, but you will be impressed by the engineering, the scenery and the fact that outside of Las Vegas there are so many more things to see and do that don't involve casinos and cocktails.

Located just outside Boulder City , the Hoover Dam is one of those places that you must see at least once because it is huge and it does have quite a bit of historical significance. When I say that it is big I cannot begin to explain how big it is without sounding like I am exaggerating. Let's just say that no matter where you are at on the dam you will look across and think about how much concrete it took to build it, how many people died while constructing it and how much water it holds back to create Lake Mead and you still will not have any idea of just how massive this thing is.

It is an engineering marvel and a day trip is well worth it.

Description of the Hoover Dam

My early memories of the Hoover Dam include taking the elevator down the concrete shaft that takes you to the base. The entire way my day would crack “Dam” jokes just to make sure I would not get nervous about the possibility of getting stuck midway between the top and the bottom.

The Hoover Dam tour has changed but you still ride the elevator down through the concrete and this massive piece of human engineering is still incredibly impressive. On my most recent trip to Las Vegas, I had kept a day free in my itinerary to visit Hoover Dam. I have visited Vegas more than 10 times by now, but in the past, I never got around to visiting the iconic Hoover Dam!

Before this, I had only seen Hoover Dam once by air when I took a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon. The dam looked massive from the sky, and I was very excited to see it in person.

So, my husband and I took a break from the neon buzz of Las Vegas and visited Hoover Dam. Let me say that it was an experience worth every minute!

In this guide, I’ll share how you can make the most of your day trip from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam, how to get there, and what to not miss seeing at the dam.

How far is Hoover Dam from Las Vegas?

Hoover Dam is surprisingly closer to Las Vegas than you may think, just around 40 miles southeast of the city. This short distance makes it an ideal day trip or even a half-day trip getaway from Vegas.

• Travel time from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam – around 50 minutes by car

Hitting the road from the Vegas Strip, the drive took us roughly 50 minutes, a swift mid-morning escape from the neon lights to an engineering marvel nestled in the desert.

We had a rental car and followed Google Maps for directions. We took the I-215 E and I-11 S, finally taking the NV-172 and Hoover Dam Access Rd and reaching the Hoover Dam parking lot.

Visiting Hoover Dam is one of the best Las Vegas attractions besides gambling .

Ways to travel from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam

Exploring your options for traveling from Vegas to Hoover Dam? The most popular options are to drive yourself or take a tour from Las Vegas. But there are some other less popular options as well, like taking a rideshare or taxi.

Drive yourself

We had a rental car for this particular Vegas trip, so we drove to Hoover Dam. Usually, we don’t rent a car in Vegas as we hardly venture out of the Strip.

But on this particular Vegas trip, we visited with family and planned to explore National and State Parks around Vegas.

Take a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas

Most tourists to the Vegas Strip area prefer not to rent a car as the parking fees can be very high at the resorts. On our previous Vegas trips, we never rented a car!

If you are not planning to rent a car, taking a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas is the most popular way to see the dam.

These tours will pick you up from your Vegas Strip hotel, and many even include lunch at Hoover Dam. You can even book a tour that includes both Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon West as a single day trip from Vegas.

Rideshare services like Uber/Lyft

This is the least recommended option to reach Hoover Dam because it might be easy to find an Uber or taxi from Vegas to Hoover Dam, but you might have a hard time getting a return ride from Hoover Dam to Las Vegas.

Even if you pre-book a return ride, they can always cancel, leaving you stranded.

If you are not planning to rent a car and drive yourself, I recommend you take a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas, which includes transportation to and from Vegas Strip hotels.

Security Procedures and Parking at Hoover Dam

Just before we reached the Hoover Dam parking lot on Nevada’s side, there was a security checkpoint for routine inspection. Just note that all vehicles are subject to security inspection here.

Before the Security checkpoint, there was signage for Lake Mead Overlook, a small road to the left. We took that and saw an amazing view of the Lake Mead recreation area! More on this below.

There is a huge multi-level parking lot on the Nevada side of Hoover Dam. We paid $10 for parking when we entered. There are elevators and stairs here.

The Nevada side parking lot structure also had a cafe, gift shop, and restrooms. I always collect magnets as souvenirs, and I got a Hoover Dam magnet for my collection from the gift shop.

There are some smaller free parking lots on the Arizona side of Hoover Dam, and to get there, you would have to drive across the Hoover Dam, which is very crowded with pedestrians. Also, the Arizona side free lots are further away from the dam, so we chose to park on the Nevada side paid lot.

Hoover Dam Entrance fees and various ticket options

It was a little confusing at first for me to understand the various ticketing fees at Hoover Dam, so I have broken it down for you:

• Parking in the Nevada side lot – $10 per car
• Visitor Center Entrance Ticket – $10 per person, includes Exhibit Building.
• Guided Powerplant Tour Ticket – $15 per person, 30-minute guided tour, includes Visitor Center entrance.
• Guided Dam Tour Ticket – $30 per person, 1-hour guided tour, which includes everything the Powerplant Tour has and more. It also includes the Visitor Center Entrance.

We only paid the $10 for car parking and didn’t take the paid tours. You can still walk on the top of the dam and the Memorial Bridge without paying for the tour, just like we did.

If you have more time than we did, definitely take the Dam tour, as it provides the best value.

What to do at Hoover Dam?

Below are some of the top things to do and see at Hoover Dam. My favorites were walking on top of the Dam and walking on the Memorial Bridge. They are two separate things!

Walk on the Top of Hoover Dam

One of the most popular things to do in Hoover Dam, and my favorite, was to walk on top of the dam. It was a short walk on a flat paved surface from the Nevada side parking building to the road on top of Hoover Dam.

As we strolled across the dam, we saw the vast Lake Mead on one side and the Colorado River’s deep canyon on the other.

On the Lake Mead side, we saw the massive intake towers and spillways, key parts of the dam’s design, towering above the water.

On the Colorado side, we could see a panoramic view of the Mike O’Callagan Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

It was awesome to stand on the state line marker with one foot in Nevada and one foot in Arizona! The two clock towers in each state were cool, showing Nevada and Arizona time.

Hoover Dam Visitor Center

The Visitor Center has exhibits on the history and construction of the dam and its impact on the region. It also has an observation deck for views of the dam and the Colorado River.

This might be the first place I have seen where you have to pay to visit the Visitor Center! Visitor Center Admission was $10 per person, so we decided not to go inside.

There were nice views from pretty much everywhere, and there was a lot of information to read outside on the dam as well, so we didn’t want to pay to just check out the visitor center.

Tour the Hoover Dam

There are two types of tours you can take at the Hoover Dam:

Guided Power Plant Tour – This 30-minute tour is $15 per person and can be reserved online at the Hoover Dam website .

Guided Dam Tour – The 1-hour Guided Dam Tour includes everything that the Power Plant Tour has, plus two extra stops in the Dam. This tour is $30 per person and is only sold at the Hoover Dam (not online). You can upgrade your Power Plant tour to the Guided Dam Tour during your visit if tickets are available.

Check Out the Exhibits Building

The Exihibts building is on the Nevada side and houses historical exhibits about the dam’s construction.

The Exhibit building entrance is included as part of the Visitor Center Ticket, Power Plant Tour, and Dam Tour.

Walk on the Mike O’Callagan Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

While walking on top of the dam was cool and something I highly recommend, the best views of Hoover Dam we experienced were from the Tillman Memorial Bridge.

To reach this bridge, we had to drive to the smaller parking lot on the Nevada side. This Memorial Bridge parking lot is free, and there is a paved ramp that takes you up to the bridge. You can also take the stairs if you wish.

There were displays and plagues throughout the walkway, which were really nice to get information about the construction of the bridge.

Once we reached the top, we walked on the bridge and saw amazing panoramic views of Hoover Dam (that we had been walking on just before), Lake Mead, and the Colorado River.

We were in constant awe of the massive size of the dam and all the amazing hard work that went into the construction of the Hoover Dam and the Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Stop at the Lake Mead – Lakeview Overlook

While coming from Las Vegas, just before you reach the security checkpoint, you will see a sign for Lake Mead – Lakeview Overlook and a small road to the left.

We took this little road that took us to the overlook area at the top with a small parking lot. The car turnaround was quick, and we were able to get parking.

From the overlook area, we saw an amazing panoramic view of Lake Mead Recreation Area and Boulder Basin from here.

We saw some tour vans stop here as well, so it seems like a popular stop in a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas.

Best Hoover Dam tours from Las Vegas

If you are not planning to rent a car while in Vegas, the best way to see Hoover Dam is by taking a tour from Las Vegas. I recommend the tour below because of the value it offers:

The Nevada side paid parking structure at Hoover Dam has restrooms, a gift shop, and a café. We paid $10 for parking. The Hoover Dam Visitor Center has a $10 entrance ticket and offers exhibits on the dam’s history and construction and an observation deck.

Is Hoover Dam kid-friendly?

I think a visit to Hoover Dam is one of the best things to do in Las Vegas with kids . Older kids will like the dam tours, educational exhibits, and ample opportunities to learn about engineering and history. Teens like mine would love taking photos with the epic scenery, and younger kids will have a lot of outdoor space to move around. There are restrooms, a cafe, and a gift store here as well, ideal for families.

Hoover Dam should definitely be part of any Vegas family vacation !

Where to stay for Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is only a 45-minute drive from Las Vegas, so it is very easy to do a day trip from Vegas like we did.

We stayed at Holiday Inn Club Vacations at Desert Club Resort , which I thought was one of the best Las Vegas hotels off the strip , but still just a block from the Strip.

I would also consider it one of the best family resorts in Las Vegas , with its spacious two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen and living room. It was great for our family of four with lots of room.

An arch dam is an arch structure opposing the water flow and has room to slightly straighten when under pressure, and a gravity dam basically offers resistance using the weight of the material it’s built of. The engineers also paid great attention to the aesthetics of the Hoover Dam, as they created an exemplary modern-day architectural and engineering marvel that’s visited by millions of people every year from all over the globe.

Hoover Dam’s proximity to Las Vegas makes it a perfect day-trip destination and a popular stop for people headed to Grand Canyon!

Hoover Dam Operating Hours : Hoover Dam is open year-round, with access to the dam from 5 AM – 9 PM. However, the visitor center and tours are available from 9 AM – 5 PM and are closed on Thanksgiving & Christmas. The Hoover Dam visitor center is located on the Nevada side and is home to several exhibits, observation deck and is the starting point of the dam tours. 

Parking In Hoover Dam : There’re three parking lots in Hoover Dam, one on the Nevada side and two on the Arizona side. Parking Garage at the visitor center located on the Nevada side, and Parking Lot 9 and Upper Lots located on the Arizona side. Parking fees are required in all parking lots except the Upper Lots, which requires a short walk to the dam.

Time Required At   Hoover Dam : You can stroll and explore the dam at your own pace, which shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. However, if you plan to do a guided Hoover Dam tour, you will need an additional 1.5 – 2 hours at Hoover Dam. 

Hoover Dam Tours : The US Bureau of Reclamation offers three tours in Hoover Dam, one self-guided tour of the visitor center and two guided tours of the tunnels and powerplant, an excellent way to learn about the history and engineering behind the making of Hoover Dam. There’re a few companies that offer tours various Hoover Dam tours from Las Vegas, including bus tours, boat tours via Lake Mead, helicopter tours, and a few others. Other Attractions Near Hoover Dam : Hoover Dam’s location, positioned on the border of Nevada and Arizona, makes it quite accessible from both the states and a great day-trip destination. The best way to get to Hoover Dam is by flying into Las Vegas International Airport and then driving to Hoover Dam! 

Airports Near Hoover Dam : The McCarran International Airport (LAS),   Las Vegas, Nevada, is located just 35 miles from Hoover Dam and is the closest international airport to Hoover Dam. The Boulder City Municipal Airport (BLD),   Boulder City, Nevada, located 10 miles from Hoover Dam, is the nearest domestic airport to Hoover Dam but has very limited service.

McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, is serviced by all major airlines and, given its proximity to Hoover Dam, makes it the best airport to get to Hoover Dam.

Train & Bus Services To Hoover Dam

Train Services To Hoover Dam : There’re no direct train services to Hoover Dam, but you could take an Amtrak train to Kingman Amtrak Station, Arizona, the closest Amtrak station to Hoover Dam, located about 75 miles from Hoover Dam. Once at the Kingman Amtrak station, you could hire a cab to get to a nearby Rental Car company, rent a car and then drive to Hoover Dam. 

Bus Services To Hoover Dam : Like Amtrak train services,  Greyhound  also connects several US cities to many Arizona cities. The nearest Greyhound bus stop being Kingman, Arizona, located approximately 75 miles from Hoover Dam. From here, you could hire a cab to get to a Rental Car company, rent a car and then drive to Hoover Dam.

Hoover Dam tours are an excellent way to learn about the history & engineering behind the making of the dam. 

There’re a few tours that are offered by the US Bureau of Reclamation at Hoover Dam, letting visitors walk the tunnels and see the powerplant at Hoover Dam. There are also a few tour companies that offer various tours of Hoover Dam from Las Vegas, including bus, boat, and air tours.

Hoover Dam Tours : The US Bureau of Reclamation offers three tours at Hoover Dam, a self-guided and self-paced tour and two guided tours led by an employee of the US Bureau of Reclamation. The tours are offered year-round except Thanksgiving & Christmas, from 9 AM – 5 PM. 

Self-Guided Visitor Center Tour : Offers access to the observation deck and the Hoover Dam Visitor Center, with several exhibits and interpretive displays. This is a self-paced tour, and you can leisurely explore the exhibit area and enjoy the incredible views from the observation deck.

Guided Powerplant Tour : Guided tour of the original tunnels and the powerplant at Hoover Dam, along with the self-guided tour of the visitor center. Your tour guide will escort you through the tunnels and powerplant, which takes about half an hour, and then you can tour the visitor center at your own pace.

Guided Dam Tour : This is an all-inclusive tour, which includes a guided tour of the inspection tunnels passing through the center of the dam, riding an elevator to the top of the dam, along with the Self-Guided Visitor Center Tour and Guided Powerplant Tour. The Guided Dam Tour takes about an hour, and once the guided tour is complete, you can explore the visitor center and observation deck on your own.

The Self-Guided Visitor Center Tour & Guided Dam Tour tickets can be purchased only in person, but you could buy the Guided Power Plant Tour tickets online on the US Bureau of Reclamation website .

Hoover Dam Tours From Las Vegas : Hoover Dam is a popular day-trip destination from Las Vegas, and you will find a few excellent Hoover Dam tour options starting from Las Vegas that lets you enjoy Hoover Dam without having to worry about transportation or parking.

Hoover Dam Bus Tours : There are two popular bus tour options from Las Vegas (1) Half-day Hoover Dam tour offered by Grayline and few other local tour companies, and (2) Full-day Hoover Dam & Grand Canyon West Rim / Skywalk tours.

Hoover Dam & Lake Mead Cruise : This is an extraordinary way to cruise the tranquil blue waters of Lake Mead to see Hoover Dam aboard a Mississippi-style paddlewheeler boat on a full-day excursion offered by Lake Mead Cruises .

Hoover Dam Helicopter Tour : There are several helicopter tours offered by Papillon departing from Las Vegas, offering some stunning aerial views of Hoover Dam and gorgeous Lake Mead.

Hoover Dam Trip Itinerary

Visiting Hoover Dam, including the Guided Dam and Powerplant tours, shouldn’t take more than half a day. Hoover Dam, located just 40 miles from Las Vegas, is a popular day-trip destination for tourists visiting Las Vegas. 

However, if you’re able to spare an entire day, I highly recommend adding the Grand Canyon Skywalk, located about 98 miles from Hoover Dam, to your Hoover Dam Trip itinerary. 

Half-day In-Depth Tour Of Hoover Dam : There’s a lot to see in Hoover Dam, and if you’re a history / engineering buff, I am sure you would love and enjoy seeing the inner working of the dam.

Taking an excursion to the famous Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is a popular activity and, in my opinion, totally worth the time. It’s less than an hour’s drive each way. This article is your guide to seamlessly planning a visit to one of America’s greatest engineering feats so that you know how to get there, what to do there, and what you need to know before you go.

How to get there

Reaching the Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is straightforward, whether you prefer to self-drive or want the convenience of a guided tour. Both options have their pros and cons.

Getting to the Hoover Dam by car is my preferred choice since you can visit on your schedule rather than a tour company’s. It’s about a 40 to 50-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip, depending on traffic (of course!). It’s a pleasant drive through some lovely landscape.

If you’re using Google Maps to navigate there, simply put in “Hoover Dam” as there’s no street address. The official Hoover Dam website also has some directions and helpful information here .

Guided tour from Las Vegas

If you don’t want to deal with rental cars and driving yourself, a guided tour with transportation from Vegas is a great option. Here are a few popular and highly rated tours. All offer free cancellation and the option to “reserve now, pay later.”

• 3-Hour Hoover Dam Small Group Mini Tour from Las Vegas : This shorter mini-tour would be a good option for those with less time, but you can upgrade to include a stop at Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains art installation.
• Ultimate Hoover Dam Tour from Las Vegas with Lunch : If you have a little more time, this longer tour includes the power plant tour, a stop at the Las Vegas sign for photos, and a restaurant lunch.
• Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and 7 Magic Mountains Small Group Tour : For a full-day excursion, this option includes stops at several iconic locations in the area.

Important note: if what you’re looking for is the official Dam Tour, you’ll likely want to self-drive and get to the dam early. Those tour tickets are NOT available for advance booking. 

Things to know before you go

The dam is open for visitors every day, but the Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

The dam is less crowded early in the morning and later in the afternoon. Plan on it getting busy on weekends regardless of the time of year.

All vehicles that plan to visit the dam or drive over the dam will have to drive through a security checkpoint. In addition, there is guest security screening at the Visitor Center.

You do not have to pay for a guided tour to drive over the dam and get some great views of the dam and Lake Mead , but I think that the guided tour is worth the time and cost. There is a charge for parking in the garage on the Nevada side or in the main lot on the Arizona side. The upper lots on the Arizona side are free.

The Dam Tour cannot be booked ahead online. Those tickets are sold at the Visitor Center on a first-come, first-served basis only. I recommend getting there by the time the Visitor Center opens.

Keep in mind that some tours may be canceled without notice. On the day of our visit, they were not offering the Dam Tour. Hubby was disappointed but we did the Power Plant Tour and thought it was great. The Dam Tour includes the Power Plant Tour.

Hoover Dam does warn those with claustrophobia that the tours include elevators and walking through tunnels. I struggle with small enclosed spaces underground or very narrow tunnels. I had no trouble on the Power Plant Tour at all.

Hoover Dam is not a National Park Service site and does not accept Interagency Passes. This means you can’t use your America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass.

Much of your Hoover Dam visit will be outdoors. Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather, and remember that it is in the desert. It is VERY hot in the Las Vegas area in the summer.

Things to see and do at Hoover Dam

There’s plenty to do at and around Hoover Dam to keep you busy for at least half a day. If you want to explore more of the area, consider visiting Valley of Fire State Park also.

Scenic viewpoints

Don’t miss the scenic viewpoints around the Hoover Dam.

• On the Arizona side of the dam, there are a few small upper parking lots with viewpoints of the Lake Mead side of the dam.
• The Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (also known as the bypass bridge) offers a great view of the dam. Parking and the walkway to the bridge are on the Nevada side.
• The Lakeview Overlook at Lake Mead National Recreation Area is just off of the Hoover Dam Access Road.

Power Plant Tour

The Power Plant Tour will give you a great introduction to how the dam was built and how it works today. The tour includes a film about the dam’s construction, access to the Visitor Center exhibits, the observation deck, and a 30-minute guided tour.

This is the tour we took during our visit since they were not offering the Dam Tour. It was excellent, but we still would have chosen the full tour if we could have.

The Dam Tour is a comprehensive exploration of the Hoover Dam. It includes everything in the Power Plant Tour plus a stop inside the dam. 

Visitor Center

With a Visitor Center ticket, you get access to the exhibits and observation deck. There’s also a topographical map representation. Visitor Center access is included in the Dam Tour and Power Plant Tour.

Of course. What would a visit to Hoover Dam be without a stop at the gift shop? Where else would you get a shirt that says “This is my dam shirt”?!? You can also find the usual types of souvenirs like refrigerator magnets, coffee mugs, Christmas tree ornaments, and such.

A visit to Hoover Dam is a great excursion to get you out of Las Vegas. It’s really marvelous to see and well worth half a day away from the Strip.

Tips for Visiting Hoover Dam

Planning a trip to or through Las Vegas? Hoover Dam is located about 30 minutes south of Las Vegas, Nevada and it's a “dam” good family-friendly attraction in a city that is not known for its family attractions. It's educational too!

We have visited Hoover Dam twice, about five years apart and our experience was similar – and positive – both times. Here's what you can expect from a stop at Hoover Dam.

Hoover Dam straddles the Nevada-Arizona state line. The road over the dam used to be part of the main highway through that area, but now it ends on the Arizona side. It is easy to spend an hour or more just walking on and around the dam itself.

The dam is an engineering marvel. Lake Mead and the surrounding mountains are scenic. The state line marker is a popular photo op and it's fun to get a good look at Lake Mead on one side and then wonder at HUGE drop down the concrete wall on the other.

There is a statuary on the Nevada side where you can get an idea of just how challenging Hoover Dam was to build and how many lives were lost for it. There is a gift shop and cafe.

It costs nothing to visit Hoover Dam. There is a charge to take a tour and see the visitor center. Admission to the visitor center is included with a tour, or can be purchased separately.

We would like to take a tour and see the visitor center, but we haven't yet. On one trip, our kids were younger, and kind of grumpy on the day we visited. On the other, we arrived too late in the day for a tour, but our visit was still well worth the time.

Don't Miss the Bridge

About a mile before you reach Hoover Dam, look for a parking lot near the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. This bridge, which was completed in 2010, spans the gorge in front of Hoover Dam. The bridge is an engineering feat on its own and there is an informative foot path up to the bridge and a pedestrian walkway across it.

You can get great photos of the bridge from Hoover Dam and of Hoover Dam from the bridge. Standing over that much air was a little unnerving for me, but still pretty neat. Hang on to your hats! It's quite windy on the bridge.

On our last visit, we spotted several mountain sheep just above the bridge, across the road from the Welcome to Nevada sign. 

There is only one small parking lot at the bridge, compared with hundreds of spaces at the dam. To beat the crowds, consider stopping at the bridge first if you arrive in the morning, or last if you arrive in the afternoon.

How to Get There

We drive our own car when we visit Hoover Dam. It's the easiest and least expensive way to get there. 

If you don't need a car for any other reason than to visit Hoover Dam, you can book a tour from Las Vegas. Concierges at every hotel in Las Vegas can help you book a tour to Hoover Dam. Or, choose from dozens of tours at Viator.com , starting at around $50 per person. Basic tours typically include

Hoover Dam has a multi-level parking garage on the Nevada side and several parking lots on the Arizona side. The parking garage charges $10 per vehicle and it is the most convenient parking option for the dam. Your car will be shaded from the sun, which will be nice on a hot day. There is no parking charge for those with accessible plates and placards.

Additional parking is available on the Arizona side of the dam. There is a pay lot just on the other side, but if demand is low you may be able to park there for free. That was the case on our most recent visit. Additional free parking is available in several places up the hill. Oversize vehicles are required to park on the Arizona side.

Parking will fill up on busy days, so arrive early or late in the day if you can.

What to Bring

Hoover Dam is located in the desert and temperatures will usually be hotter than 100 degrees (F) in the summer. It was 90 degrees (F) on our last visit in early April.

Bring plenty of drinking water with you, especially if you plan to park in the free parking on the Arizona side. You'll be walking uphill on the way back to your car. The walk across the dam is a half-mile, round trip.

Wear sunscreen and sun hats on the dam. There will be little shade.

I recommend bringing your own snacks and picnic. The cafe at Hoover Dam serves lunch, bottled water and cold treats too.

Where to Stay

Hoover Dam is located about 30 minutes from Las Vegas, just outside Boulder City, Nevada. If your visit to Hoover Dam is part of a Las Vegas vacation, then I would stay in Las Vegas. Tahiti Village Resort is a good option for families in Las Vegas.

Good to Know

Where:  Hoover Dam is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, on the Nevada-Arizona border. From Las Vegas, take US Highway 93 to Nevada State Route 172. From Boulder City, follow the signs.

When: Open year-round except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Visit Hoover Dam between 5 AM and 9 PM. Tours and Visitor Center availability is 9 AM to 5 PM. 

How Much:  It's FREE to walk or drive across Hoover Dam and the Colorado River Bridge. However, there is a charge for parking, the visitor center and tours:

• $10 for parking. If you don't mind walking, free parking is available farther up on the Arizona side.
• $10 per person (ages 4 and up) for the visitor center
• $12-15 per person for 30-minute Powerplant tour (includes visitor center)
• $30 per person for 1-hour Hoover Dam tour (includes visitor center)

How Long: 1-2 hours without the visitor center or a tour

Amenities: Free access to restrooms, gift shop and cafe.

Back in 1998, my wife and I took the top-end “Hard Hat Tour” of the dam, and got to keep our plastic “fedoras” as a souvenir. Alas, I think that particular tour was canceled after 9/11.

It did feel like some things had changed since 9/11. I’m sure the security checkpoint is a product of that event. There are still two different dam tours, though probably not the same tour as yours, for visitors who want an inside look.

I’ve always thought that this would be a fun day trip from Vegas! Not sure that I could do the pedestrian walkway though – I get a bit freaked out on the glass floor at the top of the CN Tower in Toronto!

Glass floors in a tower would make me anxious too, but I think that the view from this bridge was worth it. Walking across the dam is not scary, so be sure to make the trip if you get the chance!

we did this trip from Vegas one day and it was great. I didn’t realize how much of a history lesson we would also get but it was great learning about how the dam came to be.

I agree. We got more from it than we expected, even without taking the tour or seeing the visitor center.

I used to live in Vegas back when there was no security check point to drive over the Hoover Dam – I bet that takes time to get through. There was no problem just pulling over in the TWO parking lots (free) and walking the dam – funny to hear how things have changed!

Will do. Thanks! The checkpoint slowed us down a bit, but we were there early enough that it only took a couple of extra minutes, even on a busy morning. There were some cars pulled over for more extensive checks, but I don’t know if that was random or not.

Hoover Dam is top on our list of places to visit when we make it out West. My teens would really enjoy the tour but I’m not sure that they would have when they were younger. I’d love to walk onto the bridge and snap an amazing photo, but I’m terrified of heights and afraid I’d hyperventilate or pass out right there. 🙁

Awesome photos! I saw Hoover Dam as a kid but haven’t been back since. When my daughter gets a little older I’d love to take her there. I read somewhere that kids under 8 aren’t allowed somewhere there? Maybe it’s just on the tour…

That’s how it was for me too. I don’t recall any restrictions on taking my young kids on a tour, but it could have been the longer tour that we wouldn’t have considered anyway, or the older tour Dick Jordan mentioned. As Tonya mentioned, older kids are probably going to enjoy the tours more than younger children.

Hay Tyler! That’s good your are doing research on that dam. I hope you could make a visit there as soon as possible, and yap it would be worthwhile. Hoover dam is in itself one of most promising and wonderful attractions of Southwest area of United States. I visited there during my las vegas sunset helicopter tour(GetBusTours) along with my bests friend. Throughout that tour we really had seen amazing and worthwhile sky views of that region. After completing our tour we landed on Lake Mead. That is one of most promising attractions of Hoover dam which is known as a creation of that dam. There a visitor could enjoy fishing, boating, swimming and other water activities. I really had unforgettable experiences there. After reading your article my all memories are so fresher now, thanks for that lovely sharing…..

How long of a walk is it from the free parking on AZ side?

It isn’t long. The first lot immediately on the AZ side was a pay lot when we visited. Then the road goes up the hill and there was some free roadside parking. It’s not far – a quarter mile or so and all in view of the dam – if you don’t mind the hill.

You can find free parking if you get there first and are willing to walk a little. Drive to the Arizona side and keep driving up the hill past the parking lot. There is some free parking along the road above the parking lot.

Hi Richard. In my experience, driving in to see Hoover Dam is not the same entry point as getting in to play on Lake Mead. Driving from Las Vegas through Boulder City, we didn’t have to pay to drive to Hoover Dam. And on our first trip, we found free parking on the far side of the dam. Has that changed?

Yes, there is free parking. The free lots are in the AZ side and they are further away. Keep in mind, free parking sounds great until you have to walk back. There is NO loading or unloading on the Dam, there is not a shuttle either. You cannot wait on the side of the street for a ride. In thesumm or it gets up to 120 degrees, the road is black asphalt (hot and sticky), there are stairs between the upper and lower parking lot but, going down is easier than going up. I would recommend visiting Hoover Dam in the Spring or Fall, it’s not to hot nor to cold. The dam is open Thanksgiving, the dam is open every day, 365 a year. The only things that change are the hours that things are available or open I would check the website for seasonal hours before arrival. The last, Dam Tour is at 3:15pm and the last Power Plant Tour starts at 3:45pm. Keep in mind that these hours are seasonal.

If you choose to drive yourself, that is awesome but please be mindful of the laws, if you receive any type of ticket while on the Dam, it is a Federal ticket. So pay attention to the posted speed limit, do not enter the parking garage and immediately try to make a uturn, don’t walk in area’s where pedestrian traffic is frowned upon, don’t pick up or drop off anywhere on the property of Hoover Dam. It’s not difficult to follow the rules, there are reasons for the rules so just obey them. The number one rule is DO NOT SIT OR STAND ON THE DAM. It just takes a second and the day will have an entirely different meaning. Oh, we are not a National Park so the Park Pass does not apply here. If you are coming from within the US or from another Country AND you use a Handicap Placard at home, bring something with you that shows you require Handicap Parking. Handicap parking is free IF, you can prove or show the credentials. Only SERVICE ANIMALS are allowed on the Dam. No children or pets can be left in a vehicle, unattended. Honestly, it gets to hot and there are to many people to have animals running around as well, there is little to no shade, the only pet area is in the parking lot for the Brandon Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Hi Fatima! I haven’t been there during the first week of August, but I would expect the weather to be very hot during that time. There will still be summer crowds, but Hoover Dam is big enough to handle crowds. I would arrive early in the day to avoid the worst heat and crowds. Consider parking your car in the covered garage rather than the free parking on the other side, where you will need to walk in the heat. Dam tours and the visitor center should be air-conditioned and comfortable – if not a little cold – any time of year.

Hoover Dam is a great place to bring family and friends and simply enjoy an outing. From the looks of it, it’s a very scenic place so taking those instagram friendly photos would be no problem at all. It’s also a lovely place if you just want a change of scenery once in a while. Hi Allison, wondering if i can go early, i know parking lot open by 8, but is visitor center worth to wait? We ll be heading to south rim and wanted to reach there by noon, so can i just park my car by 8 and roam around and then head to south rim? or i have to wait till 9 to open visitor center to explore ? thanks

Hi Sanjay! I have visited Hoover Dam twice, but haven’t yet been inside the visitor center. There is an admission fee, and when I do it I want to do the tour too.

You can easily spend 1-3 hours walking on the bridge, looking at the outdoor monuments and checking out the bridge. If you’re arriving early, I would start with the bridge, then head over to the dam. By the time you’ve seen the bridge and dam, the visitor center will probably be open and you can decide whether or not to see it and take the tour then.

In your opinion would someone who is slightly claustrophobic be able to ‘survive’ either of the Dam tours? I don’t enjoy enclosed spaces but I’m able to tolerate a three hour airplane flight.

Hi Michael. I have not taken a Hoover Dam tour in many years. We only explored the top of the dam on recent trips. However, I toured the Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona in 2017, and it matched my memories of the Hoover Dam tour. I think that if you can handle an airplane or elevator ride, you’ll probably be fine on a standard tour of the Hoover Dam. You may spend some time in windowless spaces, but they will be large enough to accommodate a tour group. Some of the spaces that house dam operations are quite large. You’ll probably be able to look out at the grassy area at the base of the dam part of the time.

I will be driving from San Diego to Michigan and really wanted to stop by the dam to show my daughter. The hours you have posted is 9-5. My question is if we arrive after 5 is the whole dam access closed? I mean is there a gate or something or can we park and walk the bridge and stuff or no? I am not interested in the visitors center or tour, just would like to sneak a peek as we go through.

Hi Kathy! I’ve double checked the hours and you can see/drive across the dam between 5 AM and 9 PM every day. The Visitor Center and tours are available from 9 AM to 5 PM, but if you don’t care about those, then it sounds like you’re still good to go early or late in the day.

We want to do the Dam tour but will only get there 1pm. Should we pre-book the Powerhouse Tour and then r we able to cancel it if we are able to get into the Dam tour that day?

Hi Lisa. According to the official website, Powerplant Tour tickets are non-refundable. If that is not the tour you want, do not purchase them in advance.

If you want the Dam Tour, I would wait until you arrive and inquire about them immediately. If it’s a busy day, you may not get the next tour, but if you’re flexible, I’m hoping that you could get into a tour that afternoon. I haven’t done it, so I can’t say for certain, but 1 PM is still fairly early for a first-come-first-served situation.

Hi Bob. It took a little digging, but I found a number on the official Hoover Dam site under the Bureau of Reclamation. “For information about Hoover Dam tours, contact us during operating hours at: Telephone: (702) 494-2517”

Hi Allison, Than you, this is all great info. We are in Vegas with our teenage kids (16, 17, 19) for three more days and have decided to rent a car tomorrow to go see the Dam.

Do you have any recommendations for other fun things to do while we have the car for these next couple of days? A good place to eat on the way back from the Dam?

Also, we wanted to see the Grand Canyon – South Rim.. It seems like the place to go (instead of the West rim). Have you been to either?

Hi! I hope that you have a great time at Hoover Dam. I don’t have any favorite local restaurants between Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. You’ll drive right through the cities of Henderson and Boulder City, which might help you narrow your search. Our family also enjoyed the buffet at M, which is on I-15, south of Las Vegas.

The North Rim is not open at this time of year. Las Vegas to Hoover Dam Road Trip Itinerary: Top Stops

On your way, you will first stop at this spectacular man-made lake which is one of the best lakes I have ever seen. Lake Mead is a manmade reservoir that supplies water for the surrounding area and also produces hydroelectric power. It has fluctuating levels due to the release of water downstream, but it always provides essential services in addition to being one of America’s largest lakes!

The Hoover Dam is one of America’s most iconic landmarks. It spans the Colorado River and creates Lake Mead, a man-made lake that can store up to 29 billion cubic meters of water. The dam also produces electricity through hydroelectric generators for millions living nearby. Hoover Dam is located on the border of Arizona and Southern Nevada, where the dam is constructed across the Colorado river whose middle forms the border of these two states.

The water is very clear and almost still with tiny ripples making it a very calm atmosphere. The Hoover Dam bridge is very similar to the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls, Canada. We took the route via Boulder City to catch the I-15S highway, as our next destination was Los Angeles in California. Boulder City is a nice small city with some amazing art spotted here and there, where we stopped briefly in the city for a short break and a coffee. The number plate board in different designs of various states was interesting and I have got one of them.

From here, we continued our journey to Los Angeles taking the highway I-15S. On our way, I saw one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. I was lucky to find a quick stop to capture the moment.

Can You Visit the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon on the Same Day?

Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. Two iconic, bucket-list places to visit. Can you combine them? Can you even do them both in one day?

Well, the answer is yes … and no. Depending on two factors: How much time you choose to spend at Hoover Dam, and which rim of the Grand Canyon you want to visit. 

Let’s dig into the details.

What part of the Grand Canyon is closest to Hoover Dam?

Hoover Dam was built in the picturesque town of Boulder City, Nevada (although half of the rim is actually in Arizona). From Hoover Dam, the closest rim of the Grand Canyon is the West Rim. Which is approximately 96 miles –  under two hours – from Hoover Dam. So…it’s doable in a day to see both, if you choose Grand Canyon West. 

On the other hand, the more popular North and South Rims of the Grand Canyon , as well as Horseshoe Bend in Page , are all about a five-hour drive from Hoover Dam and are much better done over the course of several days, with overnight visits at those locations. 

In fact, if you’d like to take road trips specifically tailored to Hoover Dam & Lake Mead , or to the Grand Canyon North Rim, South Rim, or Horseshoe Bend and Page, AZ, I’d highly recommend you download the Shaka Guide app with tours of each of these destinations. Is it free to go to the Hoover Dam?

First of all, neither is run by the National Park Service (NPS). Grand Canyon West is on the grounds of the Hualapai Tribe Reservation. And Hoover Dam is run by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

So that means that you have to pay parking and admission fees for both, and neither will accept your National Park Pass. That said, it is possible to see Hoover Dam free of charge if you want to skip the museum and guided tours . 

Below is my ideal itinerary for planning a visit to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon West. It requires a day of ‘prep’ beforehand, and an optional bonus day afterward. But if you truly only have one day, then scroll down to the one-day version of how to see Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon in a day .

3-Day Itinerary: Hoover Dam + Grand Canyon 

Day one: las vegas to boulder city.

First things first - take care of business! Fly into Vegas (the best airport location for navigating these landmarks), pick up your rental car, then drive the 30 minutes to Boulder City. 

Boulder City is known as “The Town that Built Hoover Dam.” Stay overnight in the historic, downtown area of Boulder City. I highly recommend the Boulder Dam Hotel with the free Boulder City-Hoover Dam museum inside – which will save you time on Day 2 of stopping at the Hoover Dam Museum . 

Another great hotel that I highly recommend in the historic walking district of Boulder City is the Best Western Hoover Dam Hote l.

Once you have checked in at either of these hotels, this historic section of town is walkable for shopping, dining, and entertainment. And if you happen to have time on your hands around dusk, drive over to the picturesque little Hemenway Park for your first glimpse of Lake Mead and especially to see the bighorn sheep come out to graze! 

The beauty of getting to Boulder City (aside from how adorable the town is) is that you roll out of bed the next morning already right down the street from Hoover Dam, saving you a chunk of time in your quest to see it and the Grand Canyon in a day. After all, you’ve already gotten your flight, rental car, and the drive to Boulder City out of the way. 

Day Two: Hoover Dam & Grand Canyon

Getting there early will also save you a bunch of time looking for parking or waiting in line for guided tours. Once you see everything you want to at Hoover Dam (see the list below) hop back in your car and drive to Grand Canyon West. 

If you time it right, you could have quite a few afternoon hours left to see everything at the Grand Canyon. 

Directions from Hoover Dam to Grand Canyon West:

• On your way out of Hoover Dam, follow Access Road Hwy 172 to Hwy 11 (you’re heading southeast and following signs to Hwy 93 S.)
• Cross the Hoover Dam Bypass bridge and the highway will turn into Hwy 93 S.
• Take Hwy 93 S  (71 miles), then turn left onto Pierce Ferry Road/Hwy 25.
• Turn right onto  E. Diamond Bar Road/261 to Grand Canyon West.

Once you’re heading back to Vegas, if you reach the big bypass bridge overlooking Hoover Dam and still have daylight on your side, you might consider either (or both) these two awesome experiences: 

(1.) Park in the dedicated lot for the Hoover Dam Bypass bridge and walk across it for a heart-stopping view overlooking Hoover Dam. 

(2.) Visit tiny Hemenway Park in Boulder City to watch the bighorn sheep come down off the mountain to graze – an experience you won’t find anywhere else, with an idyllic view overlooking Lake Mead with the volcanic mountains in the distance. 

Then, I’d recommend spending a second night in Boulder City before heading back to Vegas. Here’s why:

Day 3: Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Take a stupendous scenic drive back to Vegas through the jaw-dropping Lake Mead National Recreation Area  featuring jaw-dropping overlook viewpoints and hiking trails through the spectacular Mojave Desert, plus water activities in Lake Mead itself.

This park does accept your National Park Pass, and there’s also a great Visitor Center near the entrance for souvenirs, exhibits, free maps, and advice from park rangers.  

Here’s my recommended scenic route back to Las Vegas through Lake Mead National Recreation Area: 

• Take Rt. 93 West to Lakeshore Road 
• Enter the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
• Follow Lakeshore Road through Lake Mead until you reach Northshore Road.
• Turn right on Northshore Road.
• Then, turn left onto East Lake Mead Boulevard to head back to Las Vegas (You’ll see the skyline from the desert before reaching the city limits. It is quite the sight!)

I highly recommend that, for the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead portions of your trip, you download the Shaka Guide Hoover Dam & Lake Mead Audio Tour . It’s a treasure trove of information about things to see along the drive to and from Vegas.

And even though the West Rim of the Grand Canyon isn’t featured on the Shaka Guide tour, you’d just ‘pause’ the tour while you drive out to the West Rim, and ‘unpause’ it again on your way back across Hoover Dam. Trust me – you will thank me later for this piece of advice.

One-Day Itinerary: Hoover Dam + Grand Canyon

If you have just one day to see Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon West Rim and are heading out from your Las Vegas hotel room, my only additional advice is a reminder to get a very early start (we’re talking the crack of dawn) in order to beat the crowds at Hoover Dam. This way you can get in and out of there quickly and won’t have to feel rushed once you get to the Grand Canyon West Rim. Just follow all of the advice listed above, but cram it all into a day!

Your itinerary will look something like this: 

• 6:00 a.m. - 6:45 a.m.: Drive from Las Vegas to Boulder City
• 6:45 a.m. - 7:30 a.m.: Breakfast in Boulder City
• 7:30 a.m.- 10:30 a.m.: Explore Hoover Dam 
• 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Drive to Grand Canyon West Rim 
• 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Grand Canyon West 
• 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.: Drive to Lake Mead National Recreation Area
• 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.: Explore Lake Mead
• 6:30 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.: Drive Back to Vegas 

And if you won’t have a rental car to make the drive yourself, there are other options for seeing both Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. You can find any number of bus tour trips out of Vegas, as well as helicopter tours. Personally, I like the idea of a road trip and the freedom to make my own choices along the way.

Now for the details of what to see and do at Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon West Rim. 

Things to Do at the Hoover Dam :

Just so you know, it is possible to park and walk around Hoover Dam without paying. But if you do want a guided tour, I recommend the Power Plant tour. It’ll take you through the underground tunnels to see the generators and show you exactly how the dam works. You can walk the rim of the dam on your own, without paying. And you can park for free on the Arizona side if you’re willing to walk a little. Here’s a rundown of what  you’ll want to see and do at Hoover Dam :

1. Hoover Dam Lookout:

First, before you even park, drive all the way across the rim of Hoover Dam to the Arizona side. Take the road as far as it allows (it’s not far but the views are tremendous) and then when you get to the end, park at the Hoover Dam Lookout for an incredible view of the entire dam. You won’t get another view like this.

After that, wend your way back toward the dam and park in any of the free lots that you pass if you don’t mind walking down to the dam. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll have to walk uphill on the way back to your car, possibly under the hot sunshine of a desert day. So have sunscreen and water on hand if you plan to do that.

Otherwise, pay to park in the Arizona-side lot, or drive back across the dam and pay to park in the main parking garage. Keep in mind this is one of the most-visited tourist attractions in America and those lots can fill up by 10 a.m., so plan to arrive much earlier than that if you want a more peaceful visit!

2. Walk Along the Dam’s Rim: 

Once you park in the lot, walk across the rim of the dam on both sides. One side faces Lake Mead, and the other side faces the Colorado River. You’ll want photos from both viewpoints. 

3. Hoover Dam Bypass or Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

That huge bridge you see above the Colorado River from the rim of the dam is the one you’ll be driving over to get to the Grand Canyon. Although it’s commonly referred to as the “Hoover Dam Bypass,” its official name is the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

And you can actually park and walk across this bridge if you have the time…and the guts! (But since you’ve still got to get to the Grand Canyon, you might want to save that bridge walk for the way back.)

Look for the marker halfway across the rim of Hoover Dam that indicates the state line between Arizona and Nevada (and the change in time zones!)

4. Visitor Center and Power Plant Tour

Head down the escalator to the Visitor Center and for the Guided Power Plant Tour. (You can purchase tickets for this online, but you’d have to know exactly when you’re arriving since they’re for specific time frames.) 

5. Boulder City Hoover Dam Museum 

Pro Tip! Walk through the free Boulder City Hoover Dam Museum inside the Boulder Dam Hotel. It’s open to the public whether you’re staying at the hotel or not. It’s every bit as good as the museum at Hoover Dam! 

6. Gift Shop

Visit the gift shop for souvenirs but not the cafe.

INSIDER’S TIP: Don’t waste too much time eating in the snack bar and grill … if you order food that needs to be cooked, you could lose valuable time. When the cafe is busy, it takes a ridiculously long time to get your food.

You are much better off having a nice breakfast in Boulder City than packing snacks and drinks (you can get both, plus a portable cooler, at the Albertson’s grocery store in town before you head to Hoover Dam).

Things to Do Grand Canyon West Rim : 

Once you arrive, you’ll have to park your car, pay your entrance fee, and then take a free shuttle to the sites, since they don’t allow private cars on the property. Things to see: 

1. Eagle Point

Stupendous views plus Native American walking tours, an amphitheater with tribe performances, and a gift shop featuring Native American art, jewelry, and crafts.

2. The Skywalk

A horseshoe-shaped glass viewing platform extending 70 feet out over Eagle Point. So you can look straight down 4,000 feet into the Grand Canyon!

3. Guano Point

An almost 360-degree view of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River atop a rocky pyramid-shaped point. You get there by hiking over slightly rough terrain, so wear appropriate shoes. You’ll also spot what’s left of a historic tram that, at one time, stretched way out across the canyon and led to a mine.

4. Hualapai Ranch

Think western ranch – cowboys, wagon rides, roping, and quick-draw demonstrations.

5. The Zipline… 

If you dare! (You can choose to raft the river and other things, too, if you have the time and money.)

Extend Your Trip and Explore More

So, folks, that’s how you navigate Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon West in a day … or three. 

If you have several days to visit Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon, you’d be able to visit Hoover Dam and then spend the rest of the day driving to either the North or South Rim of the Grand Canyon instead of the West Rim. But you’d need to stay a night or two in a hotel there in order to have enough time to explore the sites at these larger national parks and see all there is to see before heading back through Boulder City to Vegas.

An important aspect of planning any trip is figuring out the transportation situation. You’re probably wondering how you’re going to get to all of your Moscow points of interest right? Luckily, this sprawling city has an excellent network of public transportation that will make traveling a breeze!

The underground metro system is the quickest and most efficient way to travel around Moscow. Most visitors rely exclusively on this super-efficient transportation system, which allows you to get to pretty much anywhere in the city! It’s also a great option if you’re planning a Moscow itinerary during the colder months, as you’ll be sheltered from the snow and freezing temperatures!

If you prefer above-ground transportation, buses, trams, and trolleybuses, run throughout the city and provide a rather comfortable alternative to the metro.

Moscow’s metro, buses, trams, and trolleybuses are all accessible with a ‘Troika’ card. This card can be topped up with any sum of money at a metro cash desk. The ticket is simple, convenient, and even refundable upon return to a cashier!

No matter which method you choose, you’ll never find yourself without an easy means of getting from point A to point B!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – The Red Square

• Food nearby: Check out Bar BQ Cafe for friendly service and good food in a great location! The atmosphere is upbeat and they’re open 24/7!

The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic! 

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

• Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).

• Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

• Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
• Cost: Free!
• Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

• Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
• Cost: USD $8.00
• Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

• Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
• Cost: Free to enter
• Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

Novodevichy Convent | Gorky Park | State Tretyakov Gallery | All-Russian Exhibition Center | Bolshoi Theater

On your 2 day itinerary in Moscow, you’ll have a chance to use the city’s excellent public transportation service! You’ll explore a few more of Moscow’s historic highlight as well as some modern attractions. These sites are a little more spread out, but still very easily accessible thanks to the metro!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Novodevichy Convent

• Why it’s awesome: The Novodevichy Convent is rich in imperial Russian history and contains some of Russia’s best examples of classical architecture!
• Cost: USD $5.00
• Food nearby: Culinary Shop Karavaevs Brothers is a cozy and simple place to have a quick bite, they also have vegetarian options!

The Novodevichy Convent is the best-known and most popular cloister of Moscow. The convent complex is contained within high walls, and there are many attractions this site is known for! 

The six-pillared five-domed Smolensk Cathedral is the main attraction. It was built to resemble the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral and its facade boasts beautiful snowy white walls and a pristine golden onion dome as its centerpiece. It’s the oldest structure in the convent, built from 1524 -1525, and is situated in the center of the complex between the two entrance gates.

There are other churches inside the convent as well, all dating back from many centuries past. The convent is filled with an abundance of 16th and 17th-century religious artworks, including numerous large and extravagant frescos!

Just outside the convent’s grounds lies the Novodevichy Cemetery. Here, you can visit the graves of famous Russians, including esteemed authors, composers, and politicians. Probably the most intriguing gravestone belongs to Russian politician Nikita Khruschev!

The Novodevichy Convent is located near the Moscow River and offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The convent remains remarkably well-preserved and is an outstanding example of Moscow Baroque architecture! 

Insider Tip: To enter the cathedrals inside the complex, women are advised to cover their heads and shoulders, while men should wear long pants.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure

• Why it’s awesome: A large amusement area in the heart of the city offering many attractions!
• Cost: Free! 
• Food nearby: Check out Mepkato, located inside Gorky Central Park for a casual meal in a cozy setting. There are indoor and outdoor seating options and the restaurant is child-friendly!

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure is a large green space in the heart of Moscow. The park opened in 1928, and it stretches along the scenic embankment of the Moskva River. It covers an area of 300-acres and offers a lovely contrast from the compact city center.

You’ll find all sorts of wonderful attractions, from boat rides to bike rentals to tennis courts and ping-pong tables, and much more! there are an open-air cinema and festive events and concerts scheduled in the summer months.  A wide selection of free fitness classes is also offered on a regular basis, including jogging, roller skating, and dancing!

Although many of the options you’ll find here are more suited for outdoor leisure during the summer, you’ll also a selection of winter attractions, including one of Europe’s largest ice rinks for ice-skating!

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Moscow with kids, the park also offers several venues designed specifically for kids. Check out the year-round Green School which offers hands-on classes in gardening and art! You can also feed the squirrels and birds at the Golitsinsky Ponds!

The park is very well maintained and kept clean and the entrance is free of charge, although most individual attractions cost money. There is also Wi-Fi available throughout the park.

With so many attractions, you could easily spend all day here! If you’re only planning a 2 day itinerary in Moscow, make sure to plan your time accordingly and map out all the areas you want to see beforehand!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – The State Tretyakov Gallery

• Why it’s awesome: The gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art made by Russian artists!
• Food nearby : Brothers Tretyakovs is located right across the street from the gallery. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric restaurant serving top quality food and drinks!

The State Tretyakov Gallery was founded in 1856 by influential merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov.  The gallery is a national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the most important museums in Russia!

It houses the world’s best collection of Russian art and contains more than 130, 000 paintings, sculptures, and graphics! These works have been created throughout the centuries by generations of Russia’s most talented artists!

The exhibits range from mysterious 12th-century images to politically charged canvases. The collection is rich and revealing and offers great insight into the history and attitudes of this long-suffering yet inspired people!

All pictures are also labeled in English. If you plan to take your time and see everything inside the museum it will take a good 3-4 hours, so make sure to plan your Moscow trip itinerary accordingly! This gallery is a must-see stop for art lovers, or anyone wanting to explore the local culture and history of Russia in a creative and insightful manner! 

Insider Tip: When planning your 2 days in Moscow itinerary, keep in mind that most museums in Moscow are closed on Mondays, this includes The State Tretyakov Gallery!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – All-Russian Exhibition Center

• Why it’s awesome: This large exhibition center showcases the achievements of the Soviet Union in several different spheres. 
• Food nearby: Varenichnaya No. 1 serves authentic and homestyle Russian cuisine in an intimate and casual setting.

The All-Russian Exhibition Center is a massive park that presents the glory of the Soviet era! It pays homage to the achievements of Soviet Russia with its many different sites found on the property.

The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!

The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics. 

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

• Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!

• Food nearby: Head to the Russian restaurant, Bolshoi for high-quality food and drinks and excellent service!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

• A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
• Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
• The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

• Television and radio tower in Moscow
• Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
• Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

• Closed on Mondays
• Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
• The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy! 

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

Sergiev Posad (Golden Ring)
