Hot Air Balloon Rides from York over Yorkshire

Treat yourself to a hot air balloon ride in an area of great natural beauty in Yorkshire. Yorkshire contrasts varied geography and weather conditions and makes for an interesting region for hot air balloon flights.

Only one balloon ride company offers a choice of different locations for Yorkshire balloon flights.

Virgin Balloon Flights iconic big red balloons launch from the following towns and cities across North, West and South Yorkshire.

Balloon rides from York Racecourse , known locally as the 'Knavesmire'

Leeds hot air balloon flights from the picturesque Lotherton Hall

Once the capital city of England, York's Minster is claimed as the finest Gothic church in northern Europe and the city is renowned for its Roman, Viking, and Medieval heritage. North east of York and within an average balloon ride of York is Castle Howard, made famous in the production of Brideshead Revisited.

To the West and North of York the landscape is limestone country - lush green valleys (known locally as "dales") crested with white limestone cliffs ("scars") and limestone pavements cutting through wilder uplands beneath towering peaks ("fells") of dark millstone grit. Horton in Ribblesdale is a focal point for walkers on the Three Peaks and the area around here is well liked for caving and potholing. Nearby Ingleborough Hill hides the famous White Scar Caves with immense stalactites and stalagmites carved out over thousands of years by nature itself. Not far away is the Ribblehead viaduct, a marvel of Victorian engineering on the Settle to Carlisle Railway

Throughout the dales, fields and pastures are bounded by distinctive white drystone walls which criss-cross the hillsides in elaborate patterns; set against the limestone cliffs and escarpments these walls (which were originally built by sheep farmers in days gone by) look almost a natural part of the limestone scenery as viewed today. This vista was the inspiration for the internationally re-nown James Herriot stories.

Hot Air Balloon Rides Over York Racecourse

York Racecourse York YO23 1EX

hot air balloon trips yorkshire

In Yorkshire, we fly from the county town itself - York! Flights from York offer everything you could want from a balloon flight! You start by launching just outside the historic walled city before floating across the spectacular rolling Yorkshire countryside - you can even see into the Yorkshire Dales on clearer days!

When flying over the city you will have great views of local landmarks such as the Gothic-style York Minster, Clifford's Tower, the Victorian-style York Station, or even The Shambles!

Breathtaking Panorama Unfolds

As the hot air balloon gently ascends over the historic city of York, a breathtaking panorama unfolds beneath. The morning sun casts a warm golden glow upon the ancient buildings, illuminating the picturesque streets and winding alleys. From above, the cityscape resembles a patchwork quilt, with the River Ouse meandering gracefully through the heart of the city. The towering spires of York Minster dominate the skyline, their intricate stonework standing as a testament to centuries of craftsmanship. Below, the medieval city walls snake their way around the historic centre, offering a glimpse into York's rich heritage and storied past. Quaint terraced houses, their rooftops adorned with chimneys and dormer windows, line the cobbled streets, while verdant parks and gardens provide pockets of green amidst the urban landscape. As the balloon drifts lazily on the breeze, the air is filled with a sense of tranquillity and wonder. The gentle swaying motion of the basket imparts a feeling of weightlessness, as though floating on a cloud. The distant hum of traffic and the bustle of city life fade into the background, replaced by the soothing rustle of the wind and the occasional call of birds soaring overhead. From this lofty vantage point, the beauty of York unfolds in all its glory. The city's architectural gems, from the medieval marvels of the Shambles to the grandeur of Clifford's Tower, are laid bare, their intricate details revealed in exquisite detail. The meandering streets below bustle with activity, as residents and visitors alike go about their daily lives, oblivious to the spectacle unfolding above. As the balloon drifts gracefully over the city, a sense of awe and appreciation washes over me. This bird's-eye view offers a new perspective on familiar sights, revealing hidden treasures and secret corners waiting to be discovered. In this moment, suspended between earth and sky, I am reminded of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us, and the timeless allure of exploration and adventure.

Popular Places in York

The Shambles is a 14th Century street bursting with timber-framed shops and houses. It is believed to be J.K. Rowling's inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series.

York, a city steeped in history and architectural marvels, boasts a diverse array of landmarks that draw visitors from far and wide. Among them, the Gothic-style York Minster stands as a towering testament to medieval craftsmanship and religious devotion. Its intricate stonework and soaring spires dominate the city's skyline, evoking a sense of awe in all who gaze upon it.

Perched atop a grassy mound, Clifford's Tower offers panoramic views of York's picturesque surroundings. This Norman keep, with its formidable stone walls, harks back to a time of strategic fortifications and royal power. It bears silent witness to centuries of triumphs, conflicts, and the ebb and flow of history.

York Station, a fine example of Victorian-era engineering and design, welcomes visitors with its grand facade and bustling platforms. Its elegant wrought-iron canopy and ornate brickwork reflect the opulence and attention to detail that characterised the age in which it was built. Today, it stands as a vital hub, connecting the city to destinations far and wide.

Winding through narrow cobbled streets, The Shambles transports visitors to a bygone era. This charming, timber-framed street, with its overhanging upper stories and uneven, weathered cobblestones, exudes a palpable sense of antiquity. Once a bustling marketplace, it now hosts an eclectic array of shops, each with its own unique wares.

In York, each of these landmarks weaves a rich tapestry of the city's past, offering glimpses into different epochs and architectural styles. Together, they form an integral part of the city's cultural heritage, inviting all who visit to immerse themselves in its storied history and unparalleled beauty.

York offers so much more than being a location for a launching a hot air balloon but we of course suggest doing both. Go on a morning balloon flight and digest the experience of flying in a hot air balloon while sightseeing in York.

Are there any hot air balloon launch sites near Malham Cove?

The closest Yorkshire hot air balloon ride launch site is located on the outskirts of Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire . At a 22 mile drive, or 18 miles as the crow flies, there's no guarantee you would fly over Malham Cove, as the length of a balloon flight is entirely dependent on wind speed and direction.

Another of our hot air balloon launch sites near Malham Cove is found 28 miles away on the outskirts of Lancaster, at Bull Beck Picnic Site .

2. Brimham Rocks

Like something from the Jurassic era, Brimham Rocks truly is the land that time forgot. Thought to be around 320 million years old, these colossal rock clusters, are astounding geological wonders of the Earth's forgotten past. With their strong animal resemblance, make sure you look out for formations such as “Dancing Bear”, “The Turtle” and “The Smartie tube.”

Alongside these curious rock animals, the Brimham Rocks walk offers some truly breathtaking views over Nidderdale, creating a memorable outdoor adventure for both nature enthusiasts and children to explore.

How long does it take to walk around Brimham Rocks?

Roughly 3 and a half miles long, the circular trail around Brimham rocks takes around an hour and a half to complete at a leisurely stroll.

Are there any hot air balloon launch sites near Brimham Rocks?

Approximately 20 miles south-east of Brimham Rocks, you can find our Wetherby hot air balloon launch site. Flights launch from Wetherby Racecourse with stunning views of the Yorkshire town itself.

3. Flamborough Head

If you’re looking for some unique things to do in Yorkshire, be sure to add Flamborough Head to your list! Can you see puffins at Flamborough Head?

Not only does Flamborough Head offer some truly breathtaking ocean views, but it’s also a rather special home to puffins during their nesting season, between mid-May and mid-July.

Where can you park at Flamborough Head?

Pay and display parking facilities are available at North Landing, South Landing, and the Lighthouse.

Are there any hot air balloon launch sites near Flamborough Head?

However, after taking a morning hot air balloon flight, Flamborough Head makes for a great afternoon activity, helping you to round off a perfect day out in Yorkshire.

4. Spurn Point

Nestled on the coastline of the East Riding of Yorkshire, near a number of charming beach towns, Spurn Point is the very best of day trips for your visit in Yorkshire. How long does it take to walk the Spurn Point?

Is Spurn Point open to the public?

Yes, Spurn Point is open to the public. However, access can be occasionally limited due to the influence of tidal conditions and conservation work, so it's always a good idea to check ahead for any restrictions or advisories.

Are there any hot air balloon launch sites near Spurn Point?

As with Flamborough Head, our closest hot air balloon experience is located in York, which is situated far inland from the coastline. You'll find the same is true for any of our launch sites nationwide, we don't launch balloon flights along the coastline. however, don't let that stop you from pairing a balloon flight experience with a trip down to the seaside for a fun packed day out.

Those who wish to come are encouraged to come early if they’d like to get a prime-viewing spot, grab dinner and see the balloons parade over before the Glow at 7:30 p.m.

The Kentucky Derby Festival said this experience features balloons on the field, but they do not ascend. As the pilots fire their burners, guests can watch the balloons glow against the night sky, synchronized to a special musical score.

Drivers will have a nice eye-catching view on their way to work on Friday, April 26 from the L&N Federal Credit Union Great Balloon Rush-Hour Race at 7 a.m. Also, on Friday, April 26 is the L&N Federal Credit Union Great Balloon Glow at 9 p.m. at Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront.

Weather permitting, the L&N Federal Credit Union Great Balloon Race is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, where a field of more than 20 balloons will launch at 7 a.m. at Bowman Field.

Admission to the balloon events is free with a 2024 Pegasus Pin. Pegasus Pins are $7 in advance at retail outlets and $10 at the entrance to events.
