  • If you're going to spend any time on the Caribbean coast you are better off avoiding the hurricane season, which is during the fall months. If a hurricane hits the area during your scheduled trip you'll almost guaranteed to have to cancel. If you do decide to travel during this time make sure you have good travel insurance.
  • Many of the best roads in Mexico are toll roads. These roads are usually in good condition and allow for the shortest travel time. You can expect to pay anywhere from 400 to 800 pesos to travel on a toll road with a private vehicle. If you're taking a bus, only the more expensive buses use the toll roads, as this fee is included in the price of your ticket.
  • If you're traveling between cities by bus, you want to take the express bus. These buses are called directo throughout the country and they are much faster and more efficient than the local options, which stop in all of the small towns along the way.
  • If you have money that you want to exchange for Mexican pesos it is best not to do this in your hotel. The rates in hotels are usually outrageously high. There are often places around town where you can exchange money. If you have a banking card, ATMs almost always give the best rate, but this does vary by bank.
  • There are any number of activities to do in Mexico. On the coast you can enjoy surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and kayaking. It can be cheaper to wait until you arrive in the country as the prices will be a lot less, but you run the risk of some activities being sold out. Many hotels can organize activities and tours, but ask around because the rate is usually better outside of your hotel, particularly if you're staying at a resort.

Best of Chiapas and Yucatan Tour

Best of Chiapas and Yucatan

Generally very interesting, quite well organized, hotels decent (by general Latin American standards), and food good. Guides a mixed bag - some barely speak, others are a wealth of info. All kept us safe though, which is most important in this area. One guide unfortunately made an offhand racist comment towards the end of his tour, which unfortunately colored our whole perception of his commentary. I spoke with him about this and he did not apologize, but agreed to rethink his opinion. I've traveled to over 60 countries and unfortunately this is just something you encounter every now and then. In general I recommend the tour.

Our tour guide Karla is excellent. She is knowledgeable and considerate. Overall, I enjoyed the tour very much. However, thought it might make more sense to arrive Cancun and end the tour in Mexico City would make more sense. Also, might be nice to include more dinners so we don’t need to think too much after a long day,

A fantastic experience. Our guide Milton really couldn't do enough for us and the small gift at the end of the tour was really lovely. We had lots of free time and optional socialising in the evenings. I think this worked well the group didn't feel pressured. Milton was great at listening to our feedback and even changed our small and slightly broken bus to a larger one. We enjoyed the build up to the Day of the Dead and learned so much about the tradition, but also other things like food and culture. Milton was so knowledgeable. The journey to and from Mixquic was long especially on the way due to traffic. A suggestion from us would be to go to a closer cemetery, we saw at least one on the way or maybe stay in Mixquic. It was so busy at the Day of the Dead that my partner and I nearly got left behind. We managed to find the bus though thankfully. I was very impressed with this tour especially after reading mixed reviews about Bamba.

Monarch Butterfly Tour in Mexico Tour

Monarch Butterfly Tour in Mexico

You take this tour for the butterfly experience. Even though environmental factors made this year a lesser year the experience was awesome. The first sight we went to had no live butterflies. The scheduled second sight had no butterflies but they found us a place that had a lot of butterflies. To see so many butterflies was great. This tour is much less expensive than so many other options. The food, accommodations and tour guide/driver were very good. To get to the butterflies is a pretty significant hike at altitude, so make sure you can handle the physical demands. This tour also included anthropology and archeology components that were not our interest area. If you are booking for next year, ask questions about the number of butterflies relative to previous years and I would avoid the last weeks as the butterflies sometimes leave early, as they did this year.

Mexico Coach / Bus Tour Reviews

This tour was AMAZING. Daniel, our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about all the Mayan sites we visited. He also did ALL THE WORK of securing admission tickets so that we did not have to wait in any long lines. Along the way, he took us to some wonderful & always delicious restaurants for lunch. He also advised us on good places to eat dinner in each of our hotel stays. What's more, he advised in several places to eat at the hotel since walking into the urban areas

The tour was interesting, well balanced, so that it was possible to also independently enjoy each and every city we stayed at. The only thing I disliked was the fact that in the offer was included only American breakfast. So it was not possible to chose anything else, although the hotel's offer was much bigger.
