IAGTO’S 2024 NORTH AMERICA CONVENTION HEADS TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN

International Association of Golf Tour Operators will embark on America’s Summer Golf Capital for the first time.

Petoskey, MI – The 15th IAGTO North America Golf Tourism Convention (NAC) will be hosted by BOYNE Golf in scenic, golf-rich Northern Michigan, June 17-21, 2024. BOYNE Golf is a collection of 10 golf courses at three alluring resort destinations set among the charming lakeside towns of Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Boyne City and near the enchanting coastline of Lake Michigan.

The announcement was made by NAC organizer and global golf tourism industry organization IAGTO at Saddlebrook Resort in Florida where the 2023 NAC convention attracted tour operators from all over the world as well as IAGTO member golf destination suppliers from across the Americas.

“We are delighted to be taking the 15 th North America Golf Tourism Convention (NAC) to Michigan in 2024. This will be a great opportunity to showcase the golf destinations of this Great Lakes state to leading golf travel operators from more than 20 countries,” said Peter Walton, Chief Executive, IAGTO. “This will be the first time that IAGTO has staged the NAC in the Great Lakes region. This event will place BOYNE Golf and the surrounding golf destinations at the heart of the golf tourism industry for the coming 12 months.”

Bringing the IAGTO Convention and its more than 350 golf tour operators and suppliers from around the globe to BOYNE Golf will showcase the bountiful natural beauty and hospitality of Northern Michigan was a cooperative effort. BOYNE Golf led the effort, with support from Pure Michigan, the area tourism bureaus in Gaylord, Traverse City, and Petoskey, Cherry Capital Airport (TVC), and America’s Summer Golf Capital (ASGC). The cooperation of all was integral in attracting this one-of-a-kind conference to the idyllic Northern Michigan region.

The ASGCA destination features a collection of eight resort properties representing 26 golf courses designed by the world’s finest golf architects, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Arthur Hills, Tom Fazio, and Rick Smith.

The BOYNE Golf story began in the mid-50s when ski industry pioneer, Everett Kircher, developed a nine-hole course to attract summer business and retain staff at Boyne Mountain Resort. With the vision of taking golf to a new level when he developed The Highlands (formally Boyne Highlands) in 1963, Kircher hired the No. 1 course designer of the time, Robert Trent Jones Sr., to design the regions first nationally acclaimed golf course and The Heather opened for play in 1966. Since then, BOYNE Golf has grown to one of the most recognized destinations regionally and nationally, highlighted by the quality and variety their ten courses offer and the ease of access from all over the world.

The IAGTO Convention is open to golf resorts, golf clubs, hotels, DMCs, tourist boards, DMOs, DMCs and other golf tourism suppliers primarily from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean but also from around the world. Suppliers and buyers pre-schedule appointments with each other for two days of meetings.

The event begins with a Golf Tournament over two of the destination’s outstanding golf courses and will incorporate both a Welcome and Farewell evening function. In addition, attendees will also be able to participate in pre-post events at ASGCA partner destinations.

“Domestic golf tourism has never been stronger, and by bringing NAC to the shores of Lake Michigan, BOYNE Golf has ensured that international golf travel will become a valuable added resource, sustainable for the long term. In addition to two days of back-to-back meetings, the participating golf travel specialists will be provided with the opportunity to experience the golf courses and destination first-hand both before and after the convention, at the best time of year,” explains Walton. “The NAC is the most important golf tourism trade event in the USA and attracts domestic golf travel specialists as well as top producing tour operators from Europe, Canada, Latin America, Asia and Australasia.”

The 20th International Association of Golf Tour Operators Awards took on Thursday evening in Marrakech, Morocco to name the 2020 winners.

The awards are voted for by over 700 IAGTO’s specialist golf tour operator members from 63 countries.

The big European winners were the Algarve, 2026 Ryder Cup venue Adare Manor , Cyprus and PGA Catalunya in Spain.

The Algarve in southern Portugal was named 2020 Worldwide Golf Destination of the Year, whilst Adare Manor took the European, Middle East and Africa Golf Resort of the Year as well as the best Irish Hotel Experience.

Adare underwent huge investment with Tom Fazio doing a sensational job of redesigning the course that we now know will host Europe vs USA in 2026.

Thailand, Dubai among five top golf destinations at IAGTO Awards 2023

The prestigious annual awards handed out by the international association of golf tour operators have recognised two very differing asian destinations.

Two Asian nominees – Thailand and Dubai – were named as Golf Destinations of the Year for 2023 at the recent 22nd annual International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

They joined Cyprus, Los Cabos, and South Carolina on the short list that was announced earlier this week.

In the golf resorts, courses and hotels category were Constance Hotels and Resorts of Mauritius, Dubai Golf, Hoiana Shores Golf Club of Vietnam and Cambodia’s Vattanac Golf Resort alongside the likes of Pebble Beach and Kiwah Island (USA), the Old Course at St Andrews (Scorland) and Ireland’s Adare Manor.

Easy Golf Ball of Indonesia and SEGA Tours Indian Ocean from Mauritius were awarded in the “destination management and transportation companies” section.

Established in 2000 and recognised as the most prestigious awards in the global golf tourism industry, the 2023 edition of the IAGTO Awards celebrated not only the five golf destinations, but also the outstanding service provided by 60 golf resorts, golf courses, hotels, receptive operators and tourist boards in 22 countries.

This year, IAGTO members across five continents were invited to vote for destinations and businesses that delivered a great experience for golf travellers in 2022.

IAGTO chief executive Peter Walton said, “IAGTO golf tour operators handle 90% of international golf vacation sales worldwide, so they are in a great position to assess the performance of golf destinations and the service provided by industry partners, through the experience of their customers.

“We currently have 669 golf tour operators in 61 countries which explains the geographical diversity of this year’s Awards recipients.

“It’s great to see relatively small golf destinations such as Cyprus, Dubai and Los Cabos in the mix with the established giants of South Carolina and Thailand.

“Recipients of our Outstanding Service Award include the renowned golf resorts of Adare Manor, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Casa de Campo, Fancourt and SO/ Sotogrande Resort, alongside the relative newcomers of Vattanac Golf Resort in Cambodia, Hoiana Shores Golf Club in Vietnam and the Monte Rei Golf & Country Club in Portugal.

“There are also names likely unfamiliar to golfers themselves, as the awards also recognise specialist golf receptive operators, such as PAGS in Portugal and Desert Gate Tourism in the United Arab Emirates which organise the ground arrangements for international golf tour operators. Lesser-known winners include El Gouna Golf Club on Egypt’s Red Sea coast and Heritage Hotels in Kenya.

“Finally, hats off to the tourist boards who did such a great job supporting the golf tourism industry last year, including Cadiz Tourism in Spain’s Andalucía region, Florida’s First Coast

of Golf in north east Florida and England’s Golf Coast, in the country’s north west, among others.”

IAGTO European Convention enjoys strong industry support

The golf tourism industry celebrated its inaugural International Association of Golf Tour Operators European Convention in Marbella, Costa del Sol with the three-day event being attended by 634 delegates from 46 countries, making it IAGTO’s largest and most successful event to date.

Sitting alongside IAGTO’s Americas Convention (NAC) and Asia Convention (AGTC), IEC completes a trio of annual IAGTO events that span the globe. IAGTO Chief Executive Peter Walton said: “Our 2,500 member companies now have the opportunity to attend whichever conventions are most beneficial to them, at an affordable cost, in the knowledge that the business conducted and relationships established will deliver dividends every single time. For example, here at our first IEC, 50% of the buyer delegates are from the top 22% highestperforming golf tour operators in their region.”

During the event, 8,300 meetings were pre-scheduled between buyers and suppliers over two full days, and further networking was facilitated through the IEC Golf Tournament played over three courses (La Quinta, Rio Real and Santa Clara golf clubs), five hotel receptions, a Feria Andaluza themed welcome reception for all delegates and the traditional IAGTO-style Farewell Fiesta.

Speaking about what it takes to create practically useful meeting environments, Walton said: “What underpins everything we do is the close relationship we have with our members throughout the year. We understand how the golf tourism industry is evolving and what the priorities are for individual companies at any given time. Our events are simply a reaction to this, and they too change and evolve every year.

“We also have incredibly good working relationships with over 100 tourism boards. To bring an event of this size, and to enable it to return, requires a tremendous amount of support and commitment from partner institutions. For IEC 2023 we had three superb anchor sponsors – the tourist boards of Andalucía and Costa del Sol along with the Marbella Town Hall, in addition to event-function sponsors including the Royal Andalucian Golf Federation.”

Delegates were welcomed by officials from the host destinations.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of Andalucía, Don Victor González told them:

“Andalucia’s relationship with IAGTO, given the relevance of the destination in the field of golf travel, is close, fruitful, long-lasting and I would almost dare to say historic. This event is equally noteworthy as an example of public-private collaboration between the institutions and organizations involved, that we all work in the same direction to promote the development of an essential activity for the region.”

Marbella Mayor Angeles Muñoz said: “We are convinced that this event will not only have a significant impact on our promotion as a golf destination but, together with the forthcoming Solheim Cup, will be a great boost for our Marbella brand.”

Renee Kachler, Director of Business Development for the Costa del Sol Tourism Board, said: “With over 70 golf courses distributed across the Costa del Golf, making up 67% of the golf courses in Andalucía, the Costa del Sol is one of the most important golf destinations in the world. Golf is therefore very important to us. It is a segment that has a significant economic impact on the destination, not only golf clubs but also hotels, restaurants and service companies.”

Pablo Mansilla, President of the Royal Andalucian Golf Federation, said: “Revenue of €2,200 million every year result from golf related activities in Andalucía, with more than 50,000 people employed directly and indirectly with golf. That’s mainly because because IAGTO members keep sending visitors to Andalucía.”

At the opening address it was announced that IEC would return to Andalucía next year from May 13-15, 2024 and take place in the city of Málaga, where attendance is expected to exceed 800.

Founded in 1978 as the Grand Strand Executive Golf Association, the MBAGCOA has several objectives. The MBAGCOA serves 70+ member golf courses spanning a 50-mile radius of Myrtle Beach from Georgetown, SC to Southport, NC , focusing on and for the operation of its member golf courses:

The Myrtle Beach Golf Passport funds scholarships for Coastal Carolina University's PGA Golf Management (" PGM ") program. The PGM program prepares students for a successful career in the golf industry by combining academic studies and professional golf training experiences.
