Hunza Cherry Blossom Tour, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

"Memorable trip with Sultan and his company Crossroads Adventure I never thought Pakistan is such a beautiful country and the people are so heartwarming. Sultan from Crossroads Adventure designed and organized a 16 days trip to Pakistan to the some of the most beautiful areas in Gilgit Baltistan Pakistan such as Hunza, Skardu, Gilgit, Nagar, and Gojal valley. The mountains are fascinating and landscape is magically beautiful. The arrangement was up to the mark from transportation, guide, accommodation and on top of them the it was unforgettable experience. I strongly recommend Crossroads Adventure and Sultan who owns the company for those who are interested in exploring Pakistan and are looking for a reliable tour organizing company. I will definitely take my 2nd trip to Pakistan next year with Sultan and his company Crossroads Adventure.

Cherry Blossom Festival - 13 days

Overall I have to say that I was disappointed with this tour. Many changes were made to the tour. A visit to a samurai house was cancelled prior to the tour. Instead visiting a garden only. Promised a Ryokan homestay, instead provided 13 floor Japanese girl without any explanation. No tea ceremony at all. Asked for advice regarding sake distillery only to be told "don't know, sorry". We became aware that the other half of the tour on a separate your were being shown a somewhat better time so I took it upon myself to discuss this with our tour guide. I told her that the other group were being guided around sites more rather than just being dropped off and told a time to regroup. I told her that the other guide was taking her group out for dinner. I suggested that maybe if she wasn't prepared to do this she might give us some ideas about what to do. I said if she didn't try and and improve things done people may complain. Her initial response, and this is word for word, was "I don't care". I was surprised by this as she was generally a friendly person. She did however go on to explain that she wasn't going to go the extra mile as her contact did not include overtime. So overall her guiding involved a five minute presentation on the bus, then being dropped off at the site with a time for returning to the bus. So, in general we were left to our own devices which was fine for me but I know some of the group felt completely let down. Then there's the journey times between places. Sometimes most of the day was spent on the bus when the distance covered was relatively small. To top this off the time spent for lunch at a service station would often be longer than the time spent at main site being seen that day. On a more specific note there really was no need to stay in Matsumoto. The castle is a great site but could be visited on the way to the next town, especially if a two hour lunch break was reduced. On a personal note there was no effort made to mix individuals with people around their own age. Everyone in my group was around thirty years older than me. They were all lovely people but would have been better to take age into consideration when allocating group. There were a number of younger people in the other half of the tour group and so I just joined their group on occasion. Very poorly organised with no consideration for solo travelers. All in all this was an incredibly disappointing tour that has all but put me off guided tours. The cost of this tour even with the discount was ridiculously high given the quality of the guidance provided and in many cases the accommodation provided. If I thought it would have gotten me anywhere I would have asked for a refund. Avoid at all costs and trust that you can organise this trip yourself. The transport in Japan is amazing and easy to negotiate. The days where I took myself off were the best of the tour. Avoid this tour and look elsewhere.

We know the TOP PLACES IN JAPAN TO VIEW CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Recommended for the first time cherry blossom viewing: tokyo + mt. fuji.

2022 Cherry Blossom Forecast: Begin 3/14, Peak 3/22

The flowering season in Kanto has always been earlier than Kansai. If you are impatient and want to enjoy cherry blossoms, you can choose the Tokyo and  Mount Fuji route and stroll through the streets of Tokyo. In the cracks between the tall modern buildings, you will find that flamboyant pink. In spring, Tokyo is painted with a romantic color by pink cherry blossoms. There are countless cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo. The branches of cherry blossoms on both sides of the road are interlaced and woven into a dreamy "cherry blossom tunnel", and the river is dyed pink by the falling cherry blossoms.

Shinjuku Gyoen of Tokyo

Shinjuku Gyoen is Tokyo's largest park combining Japanese and French gardens. It is located in the city center and covers an area of approximately 58 hectares. There are 75 varieties and 1500 cherry blossoms. Different varieties of cherry blossoms bloom like a relay race, making the flowering period here relatively long for one month.

Mount Fuji: Soak in a hot spring to enjoy cherry blossoms

Like the cherry blossoms, Mount Fuji is a symbol of Japan. When the cherry blossoms bloom, whether you are sitting in a sea of cherry blossoms at Sengen Shrine, or taking a cruise in Lake Kawaguchi, Mount Fuji is there and will never grow old. In Lake Kawaguchi, there are also many hot spring hotels. With the chic floor-to-ceiling windows, you can not only enjoy the comfortable hot springs, but also enjoy the cherry blossoms.

A walk through the ancient capital of cherry blossoms: Kyoto, Nara & Osaka

Kansai is a healing spot for cherry blossom viewing. There are countless scenic spots here, full of ancient charm. Strolling in Kansai, where the cherry blossoms are flying, shrines, temples, streets, parks, every place is worth your stay, and every place is the most beautiful background. Put on a kimono, walk in Osaka Castle Park, purify your soul at Daigo Temple in Kyoto, go to Gion to meet a geisha, hold his hand, and watch the night cherry blossoms along Shirakawa. In Nara Park, change into another set of your favorite kimono and dance with the deer among the cherry blossoms in the sky. If you are energetic, you can also climb Yoshino Mountain and watch the shock of thousands of trees.

Kyoto: A sea of pink clouds

2022 Cherry Blossom Forecast: Begin 3/16, Peak 3/26

Kyoto is the only cherry blossom viewing spot you can't miss. There are dark brown quaint temples, vermilion tranquil shrines, and small trains slowly driving through ancient houses. All these scenery are set off by a large group of cherry blossoms. The gentle atmosphere makes you feel the style of the ancient capital under the cherry blossoms.

The Randen Sakura Tunnel is the most attractive way for people to go to Arashiyama. The Sakura Tunnel is located between Utano and Narutaki on the Randen Kitano Line. The two sides of the tram are covered with cherry blossoms, just like the tunnels of cherry blossoms entered. You can also climb to the top of Arashiyama to overlook the sky full of cherry blossoms.

Nara: Playing with deer under the cherry tree

There are two ways to enjoy cherry blossoms, one is to enjoy the cherry blossoms quietly, and the other is to enjoy the cherry blossoms. Playing with the deer under the cherry trees is the most popular way to enjoy the cherry blossoms in Japan. The deer are more charming and lovely, and Nara is the gathering place of the deer.

Mount Yoshino in Nara is famous for its cherry blossoms, and the cherry blossoms here have the reputation of "Japan's first cherry blossoms". There are 30,000 cherry trees covered. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, how can it be a beautiful word!

Osaka: Food and Sakura

2022 Cherry Blossom Forecast: Begin 3/19, Peak 3/28

Osaka is a romantic city as well as a gourmet capital. The most iconic experience in Osaka is to stroll under the sakura trees with the aroma of delicious food, and to overlook the city of Osaka from the Tenshukaku in Osaka Castle Park, and have a panoramic view of the gorgeous cherry blossoms of Osaka Castle.

The Osaka Mint is another famous cherry blossom viewing spot. There is a 560-meter-long cherry blossom avenue here. Visitors can witness up to 134 kinds of cherry blossoms. The main variety is the double cherry blossoms. The flowering period is relatively late, in mid-April.

Welcome to the tail end of spring - Hokkaido

2022 Cherry Blossom Forecast: Begin 4/22, Peak 4/27

The cherry blossom season in Hokkaido is from late April to early May. If you miss the cherry blossom season in April in other cities in Japan, welcome the tail end of spring and choose to come to Hokkaido, the last stop on the Japanese cherry blossom front.

Sapporo Matsumae Park, Matsumae-cho has more than 10,000 cherry trees of 250 species, and is called the land of sakura. The Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival starts at the end of April every year. It is said that there are more than 250 kinds of cherry blossoms planted here, so you can slowly enjoy the cherry blossoms for up to a month.

Best Hotels in Kyoto and Osaka for cherry blossoms viewing

Kyoto four seasons hotel, suiran, a luxury collection hotel, kyoto.

The Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is located in the Kennin Temple area, which has the longest history in Kyoto (built in the 13th century). The winding path leads to the secluded, and after walking across the glass bridge along the path, you come to a quiet oasis full of poetic and artistic flavor, which is exactly the same as the Suzhou gardens.

Suilan, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is a typical Japanese courtyard style. It adopts Japanese-style gardening method, the center of the hotel is the courtyard, and the buildings are cleverly scattered in the courtyard. The rooms are "L"-shaped and half-enclose the courtyard, and the rooms can enjoy the Japanese courtyard or the view of Oyan River and Arashiyama at any time.

Hoshinoya Kyoto

Osaka: sakura spring villa.

As a traditional Japanese building, this hotel has a history of one hundred years. As a resort of the royal family and nobles, Arashiyama has seasonal scenery to watch, such as cherry blossoms in spring, lush green leaves in summer, red maples in autumn, and water birds in winter. All these beautiful views can be seen from the comfortable guest rooms.

The most beautiful thing about the hotel is that the cherry blossoms bloom together in April each year, and the scenery is extremely shocking. Visitors can enjoy the unobstructed view of cherry blossoms in the hotel. Don't worry about the crowded people, take a leisurely and quiet rest in the garden to enjoy the flowers without interruption.

Arrival and departure: start in Tokyo and end in Kyoto Tour Duration: 6 days Tour date: set your own dates : Flexible date : March 20 to April 10 Solo traveler : USD 5300

Our exclusive group or family tour, the Japan Cherry Blossom Private Tour Package, showcases Japan’s top attractions during the most romantic time of year. Starting in Tokyo and ending in Kyoto, this 6-day trip. Enjoy the best of Japan’s cherry blossom season by traveling there!

While visiting Japan, we provide you with concierge assistance. If you have any needs or need to make a restaurant reservation, please let us know and we will assist you!

Day 1: Meet and Greet at Airport (Narita or Haneda) – Free afternoon in Tokyo

Greetings from Japan! Our English-speaking assistant will meet you at the airport. You will have the afternoon and evening to discover Tokyo on your own once the assistant gets you on the bus to your hotel.

Day 2 : Tokyo (Tokyo 8-hour tour with our guide)

At nine in the morning, our guide will pick you up in the lobby of your hotel, and our first stop of the day will be Asakusa. We will tell you all about the region’s fascinating history and take our team not only to the main thoroughfares but also to some of the minor lanes.

Then, it’s time for cherry blossoms as we travel to Ueno Park’s Sakura Festival, which is renowned for its abundance of cherry blossoms. Hanami, or dining, drinking, and singing while cherry blossoms are in full bloom, is a popular tradition practiced by many Japanese people.

We will inform you about Tokyo’s subcultures as we travel to Akihabara and take you to some unexpected locations that you probably wouldn’t have discovered on your own. We’ll then head to the tranquil Hamarikyu Gardens, where we can see a ton of blossoming flowers and get some incredible photos. The Imperial Family acquired ownership of this garden, which had previously belonged to one of the feudal lords during the Edo era, and it is now a lovely space for everyone to enjoy. We will enlighten you on the Edo era and the appearance of Japan during this period of isolation.

Shibuya is the next stop on the agenda; it is a must-see while in Tokyo due to its chaotic scramble crossing and devoted dog Hachiko.

Around five o’clock, we will come to an end in Nakameguro, one of the locals’ preferred areas for the Sakura season. The team will drop you off and give you advice on how to enjoy the remaining part of the evening in this location.

Day 3 : Free day in Tokyo

You have the day to yourself today to see more of Tokyo’s attractions and lesser-known locales. At the conclusion of the second day’s tour, we can provide you with tailored recommendations; alternatively, if you prefer to make plans ahead of time, you can look at our suggestions.

You can visit the Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, or Ginza if you enjoy (window) shopping to see highlights that weren’t covered in the tour from yesterday.

For a more unique experience in Tokyo, visit Shibamata, Kagurazaka, Monzennakacho, or Nihonbashi for a more traditional atmosphere. Kiyosumi, Shimokitazawa, or Koenji would be the perfect fit if you’re looking for some younger, more “cool” neighborhoods. Check out Nakano or Ikebukuro if you want to learn more about subcultures. Our team can assist you in creating a plan for today in any case.

Day 4: Tokyo – Bullet train – Free afternoon in Kyoto

You have two options today: spend the morning in Tokyo if you want to stay a little longer, or leave early for Kyoto if you want to spend more time in Japan’s historic capital. You’ll have the rest of the day to explore Kyoto on your own after you arrive by bullet train and leave your luggage behind.

It will be challenging to decide where to go in Kyoto because there are so many things to see. Today is an excellent day to explore Kyoto’s western side as you will spend Day 5 traveling through the eastern part with a tour.

The Golden Pavilion, the Ryoanji with its Zen garden, and Arashiyama with its well-known bamboo forest are a few of the must-see sights. The Omuro Sakura garden, which is close to the Ryoanji, is undoubtedly a worthwhile visit if you want to see more cherry blossoms. Please be aware that a lot of temples and other attractions typically close at 5 o’clock. The Fushimi Inari is one notable exception; it is open round-the-clock and is highly recommended.

Day 5: Kyoto (Kyoto 8-hour tour with our guide)

At nine in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel lobby and transport you directly to the Philosopher’s Path. It is preferable to visit this place a little earlier to avoid the busiest hours during cherry blossom season, when it is exceptionally beautiful. The Silver Pavilion, also known as Ginkakuji, which was important in promoting the arts in Japan, is the next stop on the schedule. We will fill you in on every detail of the temple’s historic past, bringing the location to life.

While strolling around the lovely grounds of the Heian Shrine, which was inspired by the old Imperial Palace, you will learn about its brief but fascinating history. Some of Kyoto’s well-known attractions include the Kiyomizudera temple and the neighborhood around it. The most fascinating details can be missed when exploring a new location on your own, but our team will help you get the most out of your time in this impressive location.

The journey will conclude at the Gion neighborhood, one of Kyoto’s most well-known neighborhoods. Here, in one of the several teahouses, the geiko and maiko, Kyoto’s geisha and apprentice geisha, entertain their guests. If you’re fortunate, we could catch a glimpse of one of the women going about her business, at which point the tour guide might explain what their job comprises and the background of this task. Our team will drop you off and provide you advice on how to enjoy the remaining part of the evening in this location.

Day 6 : Free morning in Kyoto – Airport You might still have the morning in Kyoto, depending on the schedule of your return flight or other arrangements. You can go to Fushimi Inari this morning if you haven’t already. After that, a bus or train will transport you to the airport.

  • Cherry Blossom

The appreciation of ‘sakura’ to the Japanese, and cherry blossom to us, is a phenomenon that began in the 8 th  century and has spawned poetry and art.

Japan is a wonderfully philosophical and traditional nation with deep rooted beliefs and a great appreciation for the natural world. The cherry blossoms perfectly symbolise the beauty and fleeting nature of life, and also new beginnings – blooming in most spectacular fashion for a week before giving way to fresh, green buds that bring Spring proper.

Awash with all manner of shades of pink, it’s no wonder Japan’s cherry blossom season is the most awaited and anticipated time of year both for tourists and locals.

JAPAN AT CHERRY BLOSSOM TIME

Meet your Ross Tour Leader, Colin Barlow at Sydney International Airport for a Qantas evening flight to Tokyo.

On arrival at Tokyo, board the bullet train bound for Kyoto, the beautiful former imperial capital of Japan. Check in to our hotel in the centre of Kyoto for 4 nights. Our first garden visit on tour is Heian Shrine, with its unique pairing of Chinese and Japanese architectural styles. The entrance to this Meiji-era strolling garden is through an avenue of 300 weeping flowering cherries. It’s a popular venue for wedding parties, and we can expect to see brides in exquisite bridal kimono posing for photographs. Welcome lunch included today.

Hotel Brighton , Kyoto

It’s an early start at Kyoto’s eastern Higashiyama Mountains to wonder at the towering, World Heritage listed, Kiyomizu Temple. Our next stop is Nijo Castle, famous for its fortress-like interior and the ingenious escape routes built into the design by the Tokugawa shogunate in the early 17th century. The garden here, Ninomaru Garden, is planted with ancient pine trees and 430 ‘Sakura’ cherry trees. We’ve arranged a very special dinner tonight with an elegant geisha/maiko traditional dance performance.

We’ll experience iconic Japanese garden design today. First, an early start to catch the wonderful morning light glowing on the 18-carat gold leaf-covered roof of the Golden Pavilion, Kinkaku-ji. Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu built this three-tiered pavilion in 1397. He used it for entertaining, and as a space for quiet contemplation of nature. It’s perfect proportions are reflected in the broad Mirror Lake before it. Ryoanji Temple is our next stop, renowned throughout the world as Japan’s finest example of a rock and sand garden (seki-taki). We’ll take time here to reflect on the meaning of the raked patterns and enigmatic placement of rocks. While this stone garden is the most famous part of the temple grounds, the garden itself is large and planted with Japanese cedars and hundreds of exquisite flowering cherries. It’s also home to a stone water-basin, Tsukubai, engraved with a famous Zen script.

Legend has it that Ginkakuji – the Silver Pavilion – was to be covered in silver leaf, but the shogun died before that could happen. An alternative theory for the name holds that the glistening black tiles on the pavilion roof reflected the light of the full moon in such a way as to look like silver. We’ll come to our own conclusion as we admire the elegance of the pavilion and the wonderful Zen gardens with their raked and moulded gravel. This serene garden also features ancient pines, ginkgoes, maples and camellias. Our next stop is Hakusa Sonso, a garden, villa and museum created by the famous Japanese painter Kansetsu Hashimoto in 1915. We’ll watch a tea ceremony performed by his wife, a Tea Master. The garden is a showcase of Japanese plants and Chinese statuary and we’ll have plenty of time to admire it. Lunch is included in the family’s restaurant. We’ll stroll along the famous Philosopher’s Path this afternoon, under thousands of cherry trees in full bloom and perfumed spring flowering shrubs, and with the rushing snow-fed waters of the Shirakawa River below us. Three rows of cherries line this most-admired walk, which stretches from the local temple to the entrance of the Silver Pavilion, Ginkaku-ji. Dinner included tonight.

Travel by bullet train to Nagoya to visit the iconic Nagoya Castle. Hommaru Palace reopened in 2018 after 10 years of restorri0on, showcasing Japan’s finest example of Shoin-zukuri Samurai style residential architecture. This afternoon visit Nabana No Sato in Mie prefecture. This theme park is a new concept in world-class show gardens covering many hectares with beds filled with thousands of every type of spring flower possible and huge glasshouses overflowing with tuberous begonias and more hanging baskets than you could count. After dark enjoy one of Japan’s largest illumination shows. Dinner included tonight.

Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel , Nagoya

Express train north this morning, through Japan’s picturesque countryside to Kanazawa on the Sea of Japan. Kanazawa is a lovely change of pace where traditional crafts, such as ceramic, embroidery and gold leaf work are still practiced.

Today we visit Kenroku-en Garden which combines the six essential features of true gardens: vastness, symmetry, solemnity, coolness, antiquity and pleasure. This is one of Japan’s three most famous landscapes and was developed from the 1620’s by the local daimyo Lord Maeda and includes Japan’s oldest fountain operating by natural water pressure.

Kanazawa Tokyu Hotel , Kanazawa

This morning we visit Nomura Samurai house with a garden of meandering streams, waterfalls, lanterns and plants.

The remainder of the day is free.

A once in a lifetime experience today, as we travel deep into the Japan Alps to visit Shirakawago Village. This village, nestled in a rural setting that looks unchanged for centuries, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The traditional farmhouses have steep thatched roofs, called Gasho Zukuri, a style used more than 250 years ago. We’ll stay tonight in a Japanese ryokan, and enjoy a traditional Japanese style kaiseki dinner. Make sure you take time to enjoy the very special hot Japanese baths at the ryokan

Tsujinoya Hananosho , Awazu

Travel by train from Kanazawa to Takasaki and make our way to Nikko National Park and its famous monuments and mountains. We’ll travel up the northern coastline, then cross the spine of Honshu through forests of Japanese Cryptomeria cedar and Chamaecyparis cypress dotted with maples. On arrival at Nikko, we visit the former Imperial Summer Palace – the Tamozawa Imperial Villa for a walk around its beautiful garden. Our hotel in Nikko for the next two nights is the charming, 145-year-old Nikko Kanaya Hotel. This is the oldest Western-style hotel in Japan and many diplomats and intellectuals used it in its 19th and early 20th-century heyday to escape the summer heat of Tokyo. Fittingly, dinner tonight in the hotel is western-style, complete with silver service.

Kanaya Hotel , Nikko

We visit the impressive red Sacred Bridge then take a walking tour of the nearby Toshogu Shrine, and hear the history behind this sacred region and its traditions. The shrine was built in 1542 to honour the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Rinnoji Temple, on the avenue leading to the shrine, contains three gigantic gilded wooden images of Buddha. The buildings are inspiring, but it is the natural beauty of the place that drew the rich and powerful all those centuries ago, and it still casts a spell. There are giant cryptomerias over 1000 years old, the turbulent waters of the Daiya River, and mists wrapping the mountain. The entire site is World Heritage listed. Afterwards, visit the Kanaya Samurai House. This afternoon there is plenty of time to explore the charming town of Nikko, shopping for vintage kokeshi dolls and soaking up the tranquil atmosphere. Dinner included tonight.

Today our coach takes us to Tokyo, with a stop to see the sacred way of ancient cedar trees, and to visit the Omiya Bonsai Village and Museum. The village was established in 1925 when an earthquake in central Tokyo forced bonsai nurseries to look for an alternative location. They chose Omiya for its clean water and good soil. There are several nurseries in the village that specialise in bonsai and private gardens also have good collections by their front doors. The museum itself offers a great introduction to this ancient art. This afternoon we’ll check in to the luxurious New Otani Hotel, our accommodation for the next two nights. The hotel is set in 10 acres of beautiful gardens dating back to the 16th century.

New Otani Hotel , Tokyo

We’ll visit Nezu Shrine, one of the famous Meiji Ten Shrines of Tokyo this morning, but our first destination is Rikugien Garden. This strolling garden was laid out in 1695 and restored in the 18th century. A path takes us around a lake, which features 88 stops, each offering a view that is a symbolic representation of scenes from classical Japanese literature. The rhythm achieved by alternating dark and bright zones, spacious and confined areas, sunlit groves and mysterious forests, produces virtually a musical effect. The azaleas and cherries will be putting on the last of their spring show. The serenity of Meiji Shrine will finish the day surrounded by forest in the middle of Tokyo. Farewell dinner tonight is held at the New Otani Hotel

Late check out included today, so our day is free to explore some more of Tokyo. Stroll through the famous Ginza district, visit Hibiya Park, or catch up with some last-minute shopping. We’ll take an early evening transfer to Haneda Airport for our overnight flight home.

It was originally built as a feudal lord’s Tokyo residence and duck hunting grounds during the Edo period, but later served as a strolling garden and an imperial detached palace, before eventually being opened to the public in its current form.

Depending on the season's timing, your guide will carefully choose another viewing spot around Tokyo for you to enjoy these lush pink blooms and the joy of sakura.

Day 3 Tokyo

Enjoy the serenity of Ueno Park, the city’s largest green space and home to numerous temples and museums. There’s even a zoo here. More than 800 cherry blossom trees line the wide central path. The first cherry trees were planted here by legendary shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose reign began the Edo Period (1603-1868). It’s said to be one of the oldest hanami (a cherry blossom viewing party) places in the city and it’s certainly a popular spot, so be prepared for crowds. The trees here typically bloom a little bit earlier. At night it’s especially magical when this space is lit up.

The annual blooming of sakura is a sacred occurrence that has been celebrated for over 1,000 years. Cherry blossom season is widely fêted all over the country. Hanami, usually with a picnic, is a chance to celebrate the arrival of spring and the transient, fleeting beauty of sakura.

You’ll have some free time for lunch and a wander among the blossoms.

In the heart of the quirky Harajuku district, we’ll stop at Yoyogi Park. It’s a popular gathering place year-round and in spring, with around 600 cherry trees, it’s another lively spot for hanami parties. We’ll then visit nearby Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu), located within a 170-acre forest in the centre of Tokyo. Constructed of cypress wood and copper, the shrine commemorates Emperor Meiji, who presided over Japan’s industrial revolution in the second half of the 19th century. This calm, peaceful escape is beautiful in cherry blossom season.

Day 4 Tokyo Kawaguchiko

We’ll head to Kawaguchiko today, about a two hour drive. Lake Kawaguchiko is the most accessible of the Fuji Five lakes; popular sightseeing spots each offering an astonishing view of dramatic, iconic Mount Fuji. Sakura season aside, this is a great place to get back to nature.

Here we’ll visit Mt Fuji 5th station to hopefully view the divine mountain before visiting Oishi Park on the north side of the lake. Seeing the cherry blossoms with Japan’s most famous mountain in the background really is an experience. There are about 300 cherry trees on the northern shore, stretching for about a kilometre.

You’ll see the lakeside trail along the eastern shore of the lake that boasts many weeping cherry trees. There will be time for lunch.

This lake is also home to a cherry blossom festival held during the season, one of the most popular in the country.

Day 5 Kawaguchiko Takayama

We’ll drive to the traditional city of Takayama today, still home to many Edo-period buildings.

We’ll visit Matsumoto Castle, also known as ‘Crow Castle’ due to its dramatic black exterior. The donjon (keep) – Japan’s oldest remaining wooden keep, completed around 1593 – is listed as a National Treasure of Japan. This historic site is particularly lovely when hundreds of cherry blossom trees surrounding the castle are in bloom.

For a taste of authentic, old Japan, we’ll enjoy a tour of Takayama old town, nestled in the Hida mountains. This city still retains a traditional feel, especially in its beautifully preserved old town (Sanmachi Suji). Here you’ll find quaint, old latticed wooden buildings and Sannomachi Street, with pretty homes, restaurants and sake breweries. We’ll see the Takayama Jin’ya, the former government headquarters under the Tokugawa Shogunate from 1692-1871.

Afterwards we will continue to our traditional onsen hotel deep in the stunning Japanese alps.

Day 6 Takayama Shirakawago Kyoto

Today travel to Shirakawa-gō Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has more than 100 'Gassho-style' houses, which feature steeply-pitched roofs. Built many hundreds of years ago, these historic houses stand together in a beautiful natural setting. Enjoy exploring this unique village with its thatched-roof houses sitting among gorgeous mountain scenery. Following this we will transfer to Kyoto where the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy this UNESCO delight.

Day 7 Kyoto

In north-eastern Kyoto, we’ll walk along the Philosopher’s Path, running alongside the Lake Biwa Canal. It’s perfect for a slow stroll under the fragrant blossoms.

Heian Jingu Shrine is a relatively young sacred location – built in 1895 – but this Shinto shrine is very impressive, with its enormous torii (sacred gate) standing almost 25 metres high. The garden behind the main hall – a shining example of Meiji-era garden design – is home to several weeping cherry trees.

Visit Kinkaku-ji Temple, otherwise known as the Golden Pavilion. This is a Zen temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with two floors covered entirely in thin layers of pure gold. The site is set within a beautiful classical Zen garden. The detailed architecture of Kinkaku-ji incorporates three distinct architectural styles – Shinden, Samurai, and Zen.

Day 8 Kyoto

Today is a full free day to spend in Kyoto. This golden city was once the capital of Japan and sits on the island of Honshū. It's famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. In the city's famous Gion district, Geisha can often be seen strolling through the streets.

Day 9 Kyoto Nara Osaka

This morning, we travel the short distance to Nara. Visit Tōdai-ji (Great Eastern Temple), famed for its Great Buddha Hall, which remains one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. This impressive building houses a 15m-tall bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana. Following this we'll wander through gorgeous Nara Park, where more than 1200 tame sika deer roam freely.

Following our tour we'll depart Nara and head to Osaka, a vibrant tourist destination renowned for its food culture.

Day 10 Osaka Himeji Hiroshima

Today your main luggage will remain at the hotel in Osaka to meet you upon your return in two days time. Please ensure you have an overnight bag packed for your two evenings in Hiroshima.

After breakfast we'll depart Osaka to visit the so-called 'White Heron Castle', Himeji – it's the largest surviving example of a traditional Japanese castle. Comprising 83 buildings, the white roof of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed complex is said to evoke the wings of a heron taking flight, hence the popular name Shirasagi-jō (White Heron Castle). This is the most visited castle in Japan and the site offers some wonderful views of surrounding Himeji city.

From here we'll continue on to Kurashiki, a city on Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, where we'll tour the Bikan Historical Quarter, known for its centuries-old buildings and lovely local shops. After our visit here we'll transfer to our hotel in Hiroshima.

Day 11 Hiroshima Miyajima Island Hiroshima

After breakfast this morning our guide will meet us in the hotel lobby. Together we'll board a ferry for the short trip to Miyajima, an island known for its forests and ancient temples. Just offshore, there's a 'floating' torii, which becomes partially submerged at high tide. It marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shrine, which was first built in the 12th century. Nearby, the Museum of History and Folklore has cultural artifacts in a 19th-century merchant's home. We’ll take a walk along Omotesando Shopping Street where you can grab some lunch before returning to Hiroshima by ferry.

Once we're back in Hiroshima we'll visit the Atomic Bomb Dome, otherwise known as the Genbaku Dome, or the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. A shell of a building that was one of very few left standing after the United States bombed Hiroshima in 1945. In Hiroshima today, locals have mixed feelings about the UNESCO World Heritage-listed structure: some see it as a reminder of war, while others consider it a tribute to the lost that ensures we'll never forget the tragic events that took place here.

Later, we'll visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which contains many poignant, yet important, exhibits. The flame in the cenotaph is intended to burn until the last nuclear weapon has been destroyed.

Day 12 Hiroshima Osaka

This morning we'll depart Hiroshima via the bullet train to Shin-Osaka Station. Upon arrival in Osaka we'll begin a full-day coach tour with our guide, beginning at Osaka Castle, which played a major role in the unification of Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama period in the 16th century.

Later, we'll tour Kuromon Ichiba, one of the city's main food markets. This spacious covered market features vendors peddling street food, fresh produce, shellfish and trinkets and souvenirs.

After a short break for lunch our tour continues to the Minami area in the city’s south – a district that's bursting with boutiques, designers outlets, restaurants and bars.

We’ll also enjoy a walking tour of the Dōtonbori area. One of Osaka's most popular tourist destinations, this street runs parallel to the Dōtonbori canal and is a hugely popular destination for shopping, street food, bars and entertainment. At night the streets here are illuminated by hundreds of colourful neon lights and mechanised signs, including the famous running Glico Man sign and the Kani Doraku crab sign.

This evening we’ll enjoy dinner as a group at a local restaurant.

Important Information

Fitness Requirements While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.

As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.

This particular tour is categorised as a “3”.

3 – Moderate Tour: A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. If you have any form of walking aids, other than a walking stick or hiking poles, then this tour is not suitable.

Accommodation The accommodation listed is subject to change. Any changes will be of an equal or higher standard. Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences, however any changes are beyond our control.

Twin Share Bedding Configuration At any time, bedding configuration is subject to confirmation by the hotel and based on availability. While you have the option to select either twin or double bedding at time of booking, our recommendation when travelling to Japan is to choose twin bedding, as the rooms are often bigger than those that have a double bed. If insisting on double bedding, please note that the rooms will be smaller and more narrow. As a general expectation, we cannot always guarantee bedding at all hotel stays.

Single Supplement Single supplement is $1,075.00 per person, in addition to the twin-share price. Please note when choosing Single Supplement for this deal that you will receive a single room, which is smaller in size than a twin/double room. Unfortunately this is typical for Japan, as the cost to solely occupy a double/twin size room is incredibly high. We appreciate your understanding

Triple Share Not available.

Comfortable 3-star accommodations or better and usage of a world class public transportation network

4 - Above Average

Japan is the land of quads and calves, expect 4 – 8 miles of walking each day.

Small Group

We only take groups of 10 – 16 in order make the experience as intimate and personal as possible.

Day 1 Arrive in Tokyo - Introductions

Shinjuku

Finally! You have arrived in Japan! Check into your hotel and get settled, then join the guide for a Introduction Tour of Japan. This will allow you to get your first taste of adventure by walking the streets of Tokyo. We will use this time to help familiarize you with the customs, the transportation system, and maybe teach you a few useful phrases!

Checkout a Japanese 7-Eleven or Family Mart  (where you will probably get breakfast from)! Taste something delicious from a street vendor or small shop. Learn the ebb and flow of the train stations and how to navigate the city!

Don’t go to bed too early! You might be tired but due to the time change, you can go to bed at 8pm and still get 10+ hours of sleep! If you go to bed early you might find yourself awake at 4 in the morning!

Walking: Light // Included Meals: None

Day 2 Yoyogi Park and Tokyo Night Life

japan cherry blossom tour packages

Take the day to explore Yoyogi Park and the Meiji Shrine! This large park and shrine are a central part of Tokyo life for locals.

Enjoy the latest crazy fashion by exploring Harajuku, crazy outfits, socks, and good food can be found there. Sometimes you’ll even see locals dressed in these marvelous fashions!

Finish the day with Shibuya, the Time Square of Tokyo. Lit up brightly and never asleep, Shibuya boasts of many shops and eateries worth your time! Cross the scramble crosswalk and take a photo with Hachiko, or shop at one of the many stores (Tokyu Hands, Mega Donki, Disney Store, Marui and more!)

Walking: Medium // Included Meals: None

Day 3 Riding Trains and Relaxing in Onsen

Odakyu Romance Train

Shinjuku Station is the busiest train station in the world, servicing 3.5 million passengers a day! Join us for an early morning as we explore the maze of shops that stretch through the station (we’ll probably even find some good breakfast!).

Then, riding the fabled Odakyu Romancar, enjoy a scenic ride into the Hakone mountains. Enjoy lunch on the mountainside and explore the shops before continuing on to the delightful Ryokan where we will be staying. This guest house has Onsen, hot spring baths where you can soak and relax from the long travels that started off this trip.

Finish off the day with a traditional Kaiseki meal in your room!

Walking: Medium // Included Meals: Dinner

Day 4 Visit Hakone Lake and See Mt. FujI!

japan cherry blossom tour packages

Enjoy a traditional breakfast served at the Ryokan and check your bags at the front desk for the “Hakone Carry Service”; they will take your bags to the train station for you so you can explore Hakone bag free!

Travel along the ropeway across the mountain peaks and catch a magnificent view of Fuji (weather permitting). Stop to try the black eggs cooked in the naturally boiling hotsprings. Sail across Lake Hakone in a pirate ship and walk the ancient Tokaido trade route through a path lined with giant cedar trees.

Discover the beautiful Hakone Shrine and enjoy lunch before heading back to the train station by bus!

Then ride the famous shinkansen (bullet train) to Osaka!

Once you are checked into Osaka, explore Dotonbori for dinner! We stay near this exciting area full of night life so that you have many options each night for food and activities.

Walking: Heavy // Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 5 The Ancient Streets of Kyoto & Geisha

Kiyomizudera Stage

Start your day early in Kyoto and walk through the streets of the city to the famous Kiyomizu-dera temple! Walk the temple grounds, see the great stage that towers above the trees, and make a wish at the Otowa Waterfall.

Continue down the hill through the incredibly well-preserved streets of Higashiyama, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. These streets are known for the shops, cafes, restaurants, and preserved homes! You can just feel the history oozing from every wall and stone around you.

Finish the walking tour at Maruyama Park and it’s beautiful cherry blossom views!

If there is time before sunset, checkout the amazing Nishiki Market! Try snacks, explore the alleyways and crowds of a busy historic marketplace!

As the sun begins to set, explore the nearby streets of Gion! Full of ancient history and traditions, Gion is at the center of the modern day Geisha. Maybe you’ll even spot one!

Walking: Heavy // Included Meals: None

Day 6 Kyoto Shrines and Bamboo Forests

Back in Kyoto again (and starting exceptionally early this time), find yourself at the infamous Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine. The earlier you arrive, the fewer people there will be to impede the amazing experience it can be! Reflect as you walk through the seemingly endless torii gates that carve a path through the forest. After a good hike, enjoy the street food that is regularly available near the entrance of the shrine, tasting the rich culture of Japan.

If available for your tour, enjoy a tour of the Fushimi sake breweries and taste various local sakes from the area!

Continue your day to the Arashiyama bamboo forest! The bamboo forest is amazing to walk through and the local town usually has street food available during the cherry blossom season. See the people enjoying their time during the sakura festivals!

Day 7 Day Trip to Hiroshima & the Sacred Island of Miyajima

Take an early morning bullet train to the sacred island of Miyajima. Explore the shrine and walk out to the Great Torii if the tide is out. The island also has many deer who are eager to meet you! Walk the forest trails and visit the 5 story pagoda towering above the town. The shrine here is one of my utmost favorite in Japan!

If the tide permits, sail across the inlet sea and up the delta rivers of Hiroshima to your next destination! (Otherwise we’ll take the ferry and a train!)

From there, head into the heart of Hiroshima and enjoy a lunch of the city’s famous (and award-winning) okonomiyaki! Visit Peace Park, see the dome still standing after the atomic blast, ring the Peace Bell, and even leave an origami paper crane. This is a time to reflect on a sobering history and appreciate our newfound friendship with Japan.

If Peace Park is too heavy or emotional for you, opt to see the Hiroshima Castle instead!

Day 8 Himeji Castle & Osaka's Kitchen

Take a short bullet train ride to Himeji and see the majestic castle that still stands there. This original castle stands tall above the city, waiting to be explored. The courtyard and grounds are full of cherry trees for a beautiful view! The castle is fairly empty but interesting to walk through. The grounds are full of history and wars of ages past. The garden next to the castle is majestic and absolutely worth visiting!

After visiting the castle and garden (and maybe lunch) make your way to Osaka’s Shinsaibashi for some great shopping an culture! For dinner, if you’ve had enough of Dotonbori by now, head just a few train stops away to Shinsekai instead! This area is known for being preserved since WWII and is famous for it’s kushiyaki (food on a stick).

Day 9 Travel to Tokyo!

Say goodbye to Osaka and Kyoto, your morning train to Tokyo awaits! During this ride you may catch another view of Fuji!

Once we’ve settled in Tokyo, join us at the Edo-Tokyo Museum! Are you an artist? You could instead opt instead for the Sumida Hokusai Museum and see the wood blocks that make the classic Japanese wave painting!

Spend the evening in Akihabara (Electric Town). This part of Tokyo is every anime fan’s dream. Stores and arcades on every corner! See how the entire block just lights up!

Day 10 Cherry Blossoms and Old History

Ueno Park in Fall

Ueno Park is a beautiful park full of cherry blossoms and one of the premier viewing spots in the city.

It can be a bit crowded at Ueno park because it is so popular, so we’ll start early! The park is surrounded by a zoo, and several museums so pick what you like! We’ll probably grab a snack or early lunch before heading out!

From the park we will walk through a large, picturesque cemetery with traditional headstones and beautiful cherry blossom lining the roads. This large cemetery houses famous artists, actors, and politicians from many eras!

From the cemetery we’ll venture into Yanaka Ginza, a traditional 1950s shopping street with original architecture and stores! There we can shop, snack and explore until dinner!

Day 11 Asakusa and Sky Tree

japan cherry blossom tour packages

Time to really explore Asakusa. Start at Sensoji temple before the shops open and immerse yourself in Japanese religion and culture. Once it hits 10 am, hit up Nakamise and let the shopping begin! This is a great time to find souvenirs for those at home or a great hat or fan for yourself!

After lunch, follow the guide to a lesser known cherry blossom viewing area. A thin strip of a park, nestled between residential areas with areas for kids to play. Walk and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of everyday life in Japan!

Before it gets too dark, climb to the top of Sky Tree, one of the tallest towers in the world! See Tokyo stretch endlessly before you, the cars looking like toys because you are so high up!

Finish the night with a farewell dinner as we close out our trip.

Walking: Heavy // Included Meals: Dinner

Day 12 Final Day!

This is your final day and it is yours! This is an open day so you can visit any remaining sites, shrines, stores, or just walk aimlessly through the streets of Tokyo.

As always I will never leave you stranded with nothing to do. Join the guide in Ikebukuro or Ginza (depending on traveler interest)!

For Ikebukuro, this growing part of Tokyo has shopping, arcades and even a Pokémon center! It has everything a general traveler or anime fan could want in one place!

For Ginza, this is the “5th Avenue” of Tokyo. Many amazing shops and high end goods, it’s fun just to explore (even if you can’t afford everything there!)

If you are leaving Japan on this day, ensure that you arrive early at the airport so that you don’t miss your flight!

5 amazing holidays to Japan for an unforgettable adventure

Considering a once-in-a-lifetime Japan holiday? Look no further with these magnificent options

a shot of famous red pagoda, chureto and mt fuji

While the country's big-hitting cities such as spiritual Kyoto, cosmopolitan Osaka and vibrant Tokyo, Japan's capital and a popular springboard for Mount Fuji, are all must-sees, there are the sunny southern islands of Japan to discover too. With breath-taking beaches and a slower pace of life, they're the ideal spot for a more leisurely trip. And then there are the Japanese Alps, vast and verdant, and a hugely popular choice for a Japan skiing holiday.

While you need to consider where you'd like to visit on your epic Japan adventure, there's also the case of how . Flights go direct from London to Tokyo, but when it comes to choosing how to traverse this incredible country there are numerous options – from guided coach tours to luxury cruises.

For a helping hand with where to start, we've rounded up some of our favourite ways to discover Japan, including a group tour across the Japanese Alps , a 17-day cruise during beautiful cherry blossom season, and an indulgent inclusive break in sun-drenched Okinawa.

A tour of Japan's essential highlights

aerial view by drone of mount fuji at kawaguchiko lake, yamanashi, japan fujisan on sunrise

Embark on this thrilling 13-day roundtrip from Tokyo, which showcases the magical, ancient heritage of Japan as well as its futuristic, neon-lit metropolises. This guided tour, which includes coach travel and hotel accommodation, will give you plenty of time to soak up the colour and culture of Japan's capital, which boasts the bustling shopping district of Ginza, vivid Harajuku, iridescent Akihabara electric town, and world-famous Meiji Shrine in Shibuya, the commercial district.

Beyond Tokyo, you'll visit majestic Mount Fiji, Japan's tallest peak; ride the Shinkansen, the high-speed bullet train; see the resident deer in the city of Nara; spend the day in Hiroshima, which has been rebuilt into an attractive, modern city; and have the chance to stay in a ryokan , a typical Japanese inn, in Kyoto. This accessible and fully-organised tour covers all the essentials and more.

Join us on the Good Housekeeping 13-day Japan tour in August 2024.

A cruise in beautiful cherry blossom season

japan's earliest cheery blossom in okinawa

One of the biggest draws to Japan is undeniably its picturesque cherry blossom season and the custom of hanami , admiring the beauty of it. Every spring, millions of locals and visitors alike patiently wait for the first sakura (the Japanese term for cherry blossom) buds to bloom, showing off their delicate, baby pink-hued petals. The abundance of blossom flowering is celebrated with festivals, picnics and the eating of seasonal, sakura-themed delicacies.

If experiencing this springtime phenomenon is on your bucket list, then this 17-day cruise in Japan is for you. While giving you the opportunity to catch the cherry blossom in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, the leisurely sailing with Holland America enables you to see plenty more of Japan, too. Other port stops include Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Aomori and the lively, karaoke-loving city of Busan in South Korea. And all of this is without mentioning the incredible entertainment, food and bars onboard your ship, of course.

Embark on a 17-day cherry blossom cruise around Japan with Good Housekeeping in 2025.

A jaunt through the Japanese Alps with plenty of tradition

reflection of farmhouses with trees and landscape in background

While this group tour ticks off the unmissable cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, it takes its guests on a journey through the beautiful Japanese Alps, a series of mountain ranges on the island of Honshu. This mountainous region is home to an abundance of picturesque cities and towns, all offering a glimpse into Japan's rural life. On this 13-day tour you'll visit the pretty city of Takayama, which brims with Edo Period houses, food and craft markets and traditional restaurants.

You'll also get the chance to wander the village of Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its thatched roof farmhouses that are said to resemble the praying hands of Buddhist monks. Along with admiring gorgeous scenery, you'll have the chance to get on hands-on with activities such as miso-making, washi paper-making, gold leaf crafting and origami. If you're craving a taste of traditional Japan, you'll find bags of it on this brilliantly-curated trip.

Explore the Japanese Alps with Good Housekeeping in 2024 or 2025.

A city break in Tokyo, Japan's energetic capital

crowds of people walking among illuminated neon signs on the streets of tokyo, japan

If you've got limited time or would prefer to dedicate your trip to just one destination in Japan, then Tokyo is the answer. Known as Edo until 1868, the Japanese capital is the world's most populous city and thus it's a melting pot of activity, culture and cuisines. As city breaks go, you'll be spoilt for choice here: see the Imperial Palace and many landscaped gardens (we like Koishikawa Korakuen and Hama Rikyu) in central Tokyo, the museums and towering Skytree viewing platform for city-wide views in northern Tokyo, and the busy shopping and entertainment districts of Shibuya, Shinjuku and Harajuku in the west.

For easy access to all of this (and so much more) it's best to base yourself centrally, and a hotel would give you the benefit of a helpful concierge to offer recommendations, book transfers and advise on transport throughout your trip. In a city with so much to offer, a bit of local knowledge goes a long way.

Plan a Tokyo city break British Airways, where you can book flights and hotels as a package.

A relaxing all-inclusive holiday in Okinawa

the anchored boats are aligned at the seashore and on the emerald green water of the sea shot at kabira bay, ishigaki island, okinawa, japan on the morning of a fine day

The idyllic island of Ishigaki is part of the Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan, where the climate is tropical and the weather is warm and humid all year round. It's here that you'll find Club Med's Kabira Ishigaki resort , perched on the edge of the Kabira peninsula with endless views of the turquoise ocean ahead. A family-friendly resort, Kabira Ishigaki is the ideal way to see Japan with a hearty side of rest and relaxation. You can lounge around the freshwater pool and unwind with a treatment in the spa, or, on days where you can muster the energy, try your hand at windsurfing or kayaking in the crystal-clear sea.

The ocean is sacred here, as it's home to manta rays and other marine life, and guests wanting to learn more about life under the water's surface can book eco-friendly snorkelling tours or day trips to nearby islands. There's the chance to experience local culture on dry land too, as guests can take part in sanshin lessons (an Okinawan musical instrument that's similar to a banjo) and sample Okinawan flavours with a selection of traditional dishes, all served in a restaurant that offers 180-degree sea views. Sounds like paradise to us...

Soak up the sun, sand and sea of southern Japan at Club Med's Kabira Ishigaki resort.
