The end of the calendar year sees such seasonal highlights as wide-spread winter illuminations, the start of the ski season and often the first snowfall. Weather ranges from autumnal cool to proper winter cold. Japan's oshogatsu holiday season comes at the end of the month with Christmas being more of a token event. Crisp, clear winter skies make mountain vistas pop against azure backgrounds with everything seeming that little bit extra special at year's end.

Know Before You Go

• Early season skiing is possible from mid to late December at some resorts
• The new year's period is a busy and expensive time to travel with some businesses closing for a few days
• The Oshogatsu holiday period typically runs from December 29 to January 3 depending on how the days fall
• Many shrines hold New Year's Eve events on December 31

Turn of the season, turn of the year

The chic, sophisticated Marunouchi district

New Year's Eve and the first few days of the new year are the more important holiday for Japanese. While most visitors don't get to experience it in a family setting, you can visit shrines to see the new year in like a local. Many hold events and prepare warm sake, toshikoshi soba (buckwheat noodles), and pork soup for visitors.

Lighting up the night

As with fireworks, Japan excels at making lavish light displays in the wintertime. Many start in mid-November and continue through the winter adding a certain frisson to chilly city nights.

You'll find major displays all over Tokyo and, if you have time, you can even take the Yamanote Line around the city to see a few of them. A short walk from Shimbashi Station, visitors can see the Caretta Illumination. The Midtown Christmas event near Roppongi Station has a shorter run, until December 25.

Ringing in the ski season

Most popular ski resorts are up and running by mid- to late December. When snowfall is scarce early in the season, resorts use artificial snow to compensate. Hokkaido's big resorts may open as early as the end of November.

Two birds, one stone

Many of Japan's ski resorts double as hot spring resorts, or at least have a selection of onsen bathing spots nearby. Worth a visit for the baths in their own right, they offer pleasurable post-ski relaxation or a viable alternative to skiing and snowboarding.

Christmas Celebrations

Although Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, it is still widely celebrated.

You’ll find Christmas lights and decorations around the cities, and many restaurants and cafes offer special Christmas menus.

Christmas Eve is considered a romantic holiday, and couples often go out for dinner or exchange gifts.

Families also gather for Christmas dinner, which often includes fried chicken and Christmas cake.

New Year Festivities

New Year is the most important holiday in Japan.

Many businesses and shops close for a few days, and people return to their hometowns to spend time with family.

On New Year’s Eve, many people go to temples or shrines to ring the bells and make wishes for the new year.

At midnight, there are countdown events in major cities, and fireworks light up the sky.

On New Year’s Day, people traditionally eat soba noodles and visit temples and shrines to pray for good fortune.

Chichibu Night Festival

The Chichibu Night Festival is one of the most famous festivals in Japan, held annually on December 2nd and 3rd.

It takes place in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture , and features elaborate floats decorated with lanterns and traditional Japanese artwork.

The festival also includes a fireworks display and a parade of people dressed in traditional costumes.

Winter Activities

When visiting Japan in December, there are plenty of winter activities to keep you entertained. Here are some of the best winter activities to try:

Skiing and Snowboarding

Japan is known for its excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities, with many resorts offering world-class facilities and powder snow.

Some popular ski resorts include Niseko, Hakuba, and Nozawa Onsen.

If you’re a beginner, there are plenty of ski schools and instructors available.

Onsen Baths

One of the best ways to warm up after a day on the slopes is to visit an onsen or hot spring.

Japan has many natural hot springs, and visiting an onsen is a popular winter activity.

Many ski resorts have their own onsen, but there are also public onsen available.

Make sure to follow proper onsen etiquette , such as washing yourself before entering the bath and not wearing any clothing in the bath.

Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese sport that is popular year-round.

The Grand Sumo Tournament takes place in Fukuoka in November, and the Kyushu Basho takes place in December.

Watching sumo wrestlers in action is a unique and exciting experience.

Cultural Highlights

There are many ways to immerse yourself in Japan’s rich culture, especially the food.

Traditional Japanese Cuisine

No trip to Japan is complete without trying some of the country’s famous cuisine .

In December, several traditional dishes are popular.

Ramen, a hearty noodle soup, is an excellent choice for warming up on cold winter days.

December in Japan: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

If you are planning to visit Japan in December, it's best to avoid traveling to the country during the last week of the month and the first week of January, because this period is one of the busiest travel seasons in Japan. Just as they are in Western countries, many people are off work during this time for the holidays, and that can make it difficult to get reservations for transportation and accommodations without a considerable amount of advanced planning. And forget about booking a hotel at the last minute during this time.

Christmas is not a Japanese national holiday , as most people there are not Christian but practitioners of Buddhism, Shintoism, or no religion at all. Accordingly, businesses and schools are open on Christmas unless the holiday falls on a weekend. For this reason, traveling around Christmas Day in Japan isn't as difficult as doing so in Western countries.

While Christmas Day is essentially like any other day in Japan, it's important to note that Christmas Eve is celebrated there. It has become a night for couples to spend a romantic time together at fancy a restaurant or hotel in Japan. So, if you plan to go out on Christmas Eve, consider making your reservations as early as possible.

New Year's Eve and Day in Japan

New Year's holidays are very important for the Japanese, and people usually spend New Year's Eve rather quietly with the family. Because many people travel out of Tokyo to visit their hometowns or go on vacation, Tokyo is quieter than usual on this day. However, temples and shrines are extremely busy, as it has become customary in Japan to spend the New Year focused on one's life and spirituality.

The New Year holidays also coincides with store sales, so it's a great time to get some bargain shopping done if you don't mind large crowds. January 1 is a national holiday in Japan, and people traditionally mark the holiday by eating several foods for certain purposes, such as ebi (shrimp) for longevity and kazunoko (herring roe) for fertility.

Because the New Year is widely considered the most important holiday in Japan , most businesses and establishments in the country, including medical institutions, are closed from about December 29 through January 3 or 4. In recent years, however, many restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, and department stores have stayed open during the New Year holidays. So, if you manage to book your trip during this time, you'll have some options for dining and shopping.

Japan Weather in December

Japan is quite cold during the winter, with snow on the ground in many places across the country, but December is still pleasant in many places, as weather is more reminiscent of late fall than the middle of winter. Temperatures in December vary based on geography, but highs and lows in the middle of the country are generally mild:

• Sapporo: 37 F/22 F
• Tokyo: 54 F/39 F
• Osaka: 53 F/40 F
• Hiroshima: 52 F/37 F
• Nagasaki: 55 F/42 F

December is also mostly dry with little rain or snow. The country receives just 1.7 inches (44 mm) of rainfall spread across nine days in December.

What to Pack

You'll want to pack general winter gear, including a coat, sweaters, and other layer-able tops, a scarf, and other winter accessories. It's a good idea to bring a warm hat and earmuffs for windy days. If you're planning to be outdoors in the cold, you can buy disposable kairo heating pads to protect your hands and feet. These handy pads cost around $2 USD for a pack of 10 and will stay warm up to 12 hours.

December Events in Japan

With the year coming to a close, there are plenty of traditional festivals and events that can add authenticity to your Japanese vacation.

• Chichibu Yomatsuri (December 2): In this famous night festival, floats lit by lanterns are pulled through the town.
• Sanpoji Daikon Festival (December 9-10): This Kyoto festival celebrates the popular daikon radish, which becomes available in the fall. More than 10,000 people eat the boiled radish during the celebration.
• Akou Gishisai (December 14): This festival is a memorial to the 47 ronin (or wandering samurai) who committed suicide to avenge their master. The celebration includes traditional dance and warrior parades.

December Travel Tips

• The New Year period might be a good time to stay in Tokyo. You may get good deals on nice hotels. On the other hand, onsen hot springs and snow resorts tend to be crowded with visitors. Early reservations are recommended if you plan to stay at onsen or snow sports destinations.
• If you are taking long-distance trains, try to make seat reservations in advance. It's hard to get seats on non-reserved cars during the peak travel season.

December Weather in Japan

Japan has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Although the exact dates of each season vary by location, December is generally recognized as the month when  autumn ends   and   winter begins .

☁️ Early December Weather Conditions in Japan

You’ll generally experience cooler, but not frigid, weather during the beginning of the month. Of course, the further north you go up in Japan, the colder it gets.

Here are some averages to know for early December:

• 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 40 °F to 56 °F in the southern regions (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and 20 °F to 43 °F in the northern areas (e.g., Hokkaido).
• 🌧️ Rainy days – December is Japan’s driest month, with an average of five rainy days out of 31. Rain is more common during the first half of the month, but not by much.

Rainy days are characterized by  occasional showers lasting  one to three hours. It’s rare to experience long-lasting downpours.

• ☀️ Daylight hours – December begins with ten hours   of daylight. The typical sunrise is around 6:30 am, and the sunset is around 4:30 pm.

🥶 Late December Weather Conditions in Japan

During the second half of December in Japan, you’ll start experiencing colder and dryer conditions . Here are some averages to know:

• 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 38 °F to 53 °F on the south side (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and 17 °F to 30 °F on the north side (e.g., Sapporo).
• 🌧️ Rainy days – Late December will continue to see some rainy days (on average, less than four days), but they should lessen as the month progresses.
• ☀️ Daylight hours – Daylight time drops to 9.5 hours by the end of the month. Sunrise is typically around 7 am, and sunset is around 4:30 pm.

🍀 My Sister’s December Experience in Japan

My sister and her fiance visited Japan during the last ten days of December . They stayed on the south side of the island and went to three different areas: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka .

During their trip, they primarily experienced cold but sunny days . They wore layers, puffer jackets, and some winter accessories (e.g., scarves, warm hats, gloves).

Of the ten days they were there, they experienced rain once in Kyoto for one to two hours.

This 10-day Japan itinerary combines visiting Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo with two epic adventures.

❄️ Does It Snow in Japan in December?

Whether you’ll get snow in Japan in December varies by region.

Snow is rare on the south side (e.g., Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka). Even if you get a bit of it, it rarely sticks.

In comparison, snow is common on the north side (e.g., Hokkaido). Snowfall can start as early as late October and will stick around until as late as April.

Hokkaido becomes a  winter wonderland  in November. However, the popular Sapporo Snow Festival occurs in early February every year.

Is December a Good Time to Travel to Japan?

Japan is a great place to visit year-round, as every season and month offers something different in terms of activities, special events, and weather.

That said, December is not the most popular time to visit Japan, which means that there are both advantages and disadvantages to visiting during that month.

👍🏻 Upsides of Visiting Japan in December

Visiting Japan in the month of December has a few upsides:

1. Japan lights up in December.

Japan has a tradition of decorating its streets and buildings with lights during the winter months. The major cities are known for their impressive light displays and elaborate winter illuminations.

December is a  particularly festive month with Christmas and New Year’s Eve . While Japan celebrates Christmas, it’s seen as a festive and commercial event, not a religious one like in the United States.

2. December is typically less crowded (with an exception).

Tourist attractions that are generally overcrowded and have long lines during peak season are more manageable in December .

The exception is the week of Christmas and New Year’s Eve when domestic travel and tourism pick up. When my sister visited Osaka around this time, popular places like Dotonbori were packed.

Japan’s  peak tourist seasons  are when the cherry blossoms bloom in late March to early April, and autumn foliage appears from late October to early December.

3. December is a perfect time to enjoy the onsens.

Japan is famous for its onsens (natural hot springs). December’s cold weather makes it an ideal time to take a dip in the onsens.

In contrast, the weather was still hot when I visited in September, so I sometimes felt  overly warm in an onsen .

4. December is a great time for winter sports.

Hokkaido in the north is renowned for its ideal conditions for winter sports . December is a fantastic time to visit the region to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, ice skate, and more.

🍀 My Sister’s Positive Experience With Visiting in December

My sister and her fiance enjoyed the festive light decorations while walking around Japan in December. The streets of Harajuku in Tokyo and Dontobori in Osaka were adorned with lights, giving the cities a cheerful atmosphere.

They also experienced fewer crowds the week before Christmas , and the crowd noticeably increased the last week when more locals were traveling and celebrating. Tokyo’s teamLab, which is usually a zoo, was significantly less crowded.

One of the best things about visiting Japan in December is eating warm winter food , including udon, ramen, and Japanese barbeque. They are incredibly delicious in the cold weather.

👎🏻 Downsides of Visiting Japan in December

Visiting Japan in December also has a few downsides:

1. December is not the time for fall foliage or cherry blossoms.

If you are lucky, you might see some orange in early December. But in general, you will  miss the cherry blossoms  and maybe see some fall foliage.

In December, the surrounding trees will mostly be either green or bare , so it’s not the best time for parks and gardens.

2. The weather is cold.

The weather in December is cold, with nights dipping into the 30s °F . This will make being outside more challenging, especially if you plan to wait in long lines at popular restaurants and attractions.

Hiking Mount Fuji is a bucket list item for some people, but it’s closed during the winter season.

3. Some businesses will be closed around New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Eve is a culturally significant celebration for Japanese people, so more business and service closures will occur during that timeframe.

🍀 My Sister’s Negative Experience With Visiting in December

My sister’s and her fiance’s biggest disappointment with visiting Japan in December was how bare all the trees and surrounding gardens were. Ueno Park in Tokyo, for example, was underwhelming, without any leaves or cherry blossoms .

Also, they ate at some very popular restaurants that required waits of up to two hours, and the cold made standing outside uncomfortable .

They also noticed that none of the winter shopping sales (e.g., big discounts for cashmere and winter coats) were in effect in December. Most winter sales start in January, so you’ll miss out on those.

5 Great Things To Do in December in Japan

Due to the smaller crowds and light displays, December is a great time to explore major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

If you’re looking for activities that are more specific to December, here are five unique and great things to do in Japan during that month:

1. Catch the Chichibu Night Festival

🏮 Why : The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan’s top three festivals, and it takes place annually in December. This winter festival features intricately decorated floats with lanterns, firework displays, and streets filled with festival food.

📍 Location : Chichibu Night Festival takes place in Chichibu , two-and-a-half hours northwest of Tokyo by train.

🎟️ Admission : Free

🗓️ Timing : Chichibu Night Festival takes place December 2 and 3 annually

2. Enjoy a Dip in an Onsen

♨️ Why : December is an amazing time to enjoy Japan’s numerous hot springs as temperatures drop.

📍 Location : While hot springs can be found virtually anywhere in Japan, the town of  Hakone  is particularly known for them. Hakone is known for its geothermal activity and stunning natural landscapes.

If you want to be further north, Zao Onsen is another famous hot spring area that gets snow. The nearby Mount Zao is known for an interesting weather phenomenon called snow monsters.

🎟️ Admission : The cost of an onsen is determined by several factors. A budget-friendly public onsen can be as cheap as $2, and a luxury private onsen can go for over $100.

🗓️ Timing : Onsens are available year-round. Japanese people enjoy them at almost any time of the day.

Another great way to warm up during winter is by eating  seasonal cuisine  like nabe (hot pot). Nabe is a winter dish with seafood, meat, tofu, and vegetables. Japanese convenience stores also start serving hot snacks and beverages .

3. See a Winter Illumination

✨ Why : The Winter season in Japan is known for its impressive display of winter illuminations. Some of the most impressive illuminations are:

• Sagamiko Illumillion – one of the largest displays of light.
• Sendai Pageant of Starlight – showcases hundreds of trees covered in LED lights.
• Ashikaga Flower Fantasy – includes a music-synchronized light show.
• Osaka Hikari Renaissance – lights up several of Osaka’s historic buildings.

🎟️ Admission : The illuminations mentioned above range from free admission to $15 USD.

🗓️ Timing : Many illuminations start in October and November and go until the end of the year.

4. Visit Shirakawa-go

⛰️ Why : Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area has a village known for its traditional centuries-old farmhouses that look spectacular during the winter months when it snows. It’s the perfect place to see snowy landscapes near Tokyo.

📍 Location : Shirakawa-go is in the remote mountains of Gifu Prefecture in central Japan. One way to see it is with a knowledgeable local guide .

🎟️ Admission : The village has no admission fee, but you may want to take a guided tour.

🗓️ Timing : The Gifu Prefecture typically starts receiving snow in mid-December. The heavy snowfall begins in January.

5. Do a Winter Sport

⛷️ Why : Japan boasts ideal winter conditions for many winter sports, including skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and ice skating.

📍 Location : Hokkaido , Nagano , or Niigata are known for excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities. They’re some of Japan’s best places to visit during the winter season.

December in Japan’s Majors Cities: Tips and Firsthand Experience

If you’re concerned about the December weather in Japan and how the cold may impact your travel plans, below are my sister’s and her fiance’s first-hand experiences of visiting in December 2023.

The weather didn’t drastically change their itinerary, but it did influence it.

🗓️ December in Tokyo

My sister and her fiance were in Tokyo for five days. It was consistently in the 40s °F , which didn’t stop them from enjoying some of the city’s outdoor spaces.

That said, while Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden still had some orange and red coloring, Ueon Park was mostly bare and underwhelming, so December can be a hit or miss for how nice the gardens and parks will be.

As you’ll likely spend most of the time indoors, make sure to plan for hot food and great indoor experiences. They enjoyed:

• Amazing warm food like grilled beef cutlets at Gyukatsu Motomura
• Exploring the beautiful and immersive teamLab Planets , which was not too crowded and had warm water running that warmed up everyone’s feet
• Staying indoors and shopping around Ginza
• Seeing all the festive lights at Omoide Yokocho . This street is also known for bars and izakayas .

Their biggest pro tip is to wear layers in Tokyo in December. Many of the city’s indoor areas, including train stations, malls, shops, and restaurants, blast the heat.

December Events and Activities in Tokyo

Tokyo also hosts some special winter events in December:

• Tokyo Christmas Market – an extravagant market that is only held in December.
• Tokyo Station – a worthwhile light display that happens in December.
• Oji Fox Parade – a costume-filled parade around Oji Inari Shine that happens at the end of the year.
• The Hagoita Fair – a traditional event happening in Asakusa’s Sensoji Temple.
• Ice skating rings – Many ice skating rinks start popping up around Tokyo, with Midtown Ice Rink being one of the most well-known ones.
• Tokyo Disneyland – puts up festive decorations and hosts Christmas parades.

🗓️ December in Kyoto

My sister and her fiance were in Kyoto for three days, and the weather was consistent with Tokyo’s (i.e., comfortable winter weather ).

Visiting Kyoto in December was great because there were  fewer crowds for famous places like the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which they loved.

The most amazing thing about Kyoto in December was the chance to experience an onsen against the cold winter air. They stayed at Ryokan Rangestu, and highly recommend them.

December Events in Kyoto

Kyoto also hosts some exciting events in December:

• Yamashina Gishi Matsuri – a parade featuring traditional clothing and armor that takes place on December 14th every year.
• Shimai Kōbō  – a bustling flea market that attracts both foreign visitors and locals. It’s especially festive and exciting in December.
• Toji Temple & Hogonin Temple – light up in December, along with other temples.

🗓️ December in Osaka

My sister and her fiance were in Osaka for two days. The weather was consistent with Tokyo’s (i.e., mostly in the 40s °F ).

They spent most of their time in the famous Dotonbori and the popular Osaka Aquarium. The weather did not impact their plans ; they would have gone to both places regardless of whether it was summer or winter.

They also rode the Ebisu Tower Ferris Wheel . That was one of the only activities they were concerned about being outside in the cold, but it turns out that the individual capsules are enclosed.

What to Pack for Japan in December

Remember that you will experience mostly sunny but cold days in December in Japan.

Here are some things to remember to pack for a trip to Japan in December:

• Winter outer layer – Temperatures will be cold, so bring a winter or puff jacket.

It’s important to bring layers when packing for December, as Japanese shops and restaurants tend to turn up the heat indoors when it’s cold outside.

• Winter accessories – It can get windy and cloudy on some days, so if you run cold, it’s a good idea to pack warm hats, scarves, earmuffs, and gloves.

If you plan to visit open observation decks, like Shibuya Sky in Tokyo , know that winds can get strong, so you’ll want to bundle up.

• Comfortable walking shoes – Don’t be afraid to pack hiking shoes if necessary (you’ll see many tourists walking around in them).

December is the first month of winter . Temperatures drop in most regions, though they are not as cold as in January or February . In the south, Kyushu has a warmer atmosphere that reaches temperatures above 10°C, even during the night, though it also has a higher humidity. Colder weather is usually also drier, meaning a clear blue sky. Even though there isn’t a lot of sun (about 10 hours a day), it is balanced with a stronger intensity, which allows to appreciate beautiful outdoor walks.

National public holidays

In 2019, December 23rd is not a National public holiday anymore. From 2020 on, the Birthday of the Japanese Emperor ( Tenno Tanjobi ) will be celebrated on February 23rd to comply with the new emperor Naruhito’s birthday.

In December, the beginning of winter, both domestic and international people enjoy seasonal events including Christmas Market and New Year’s countdown parties in Japan as well as skiing and snowboarding and Onsen hot springs. Towns are lit up by colorful illuminations in December. You will see hot pot dishes and other Japanese delicacies perfect for winter as well as weird tradition like celebrating Christmas with KFC in Japan. The average daily temperature in December in Tokyo is 6-10°C (42.8-50°F). Of course, it is colder in snowy areas such as Hokkaido, Tohoku Region and the Japan Alps while it is warmer in Okinawa and other southern prefectures.

Winter illuminations are definitely Japan’s top attraction in winter months. Numbers of illumination events are held at cities across the country, and you should definitely visit and see the spectacular illuminations as many as you can! Typically illumination events are available until Christmas day, but nowadays many events run after new year, even until spring following year.

2. Christmas Markets

The best way to celebrate the winter holiday season is by drinking hot wine and munching some German sausages, don’t you agree?? There are several authentic Christmas Markets in Tokyo open during Christmas season where you can simply have a good time with delicious Christmas food, hot wine, Christmas tree and decorations.

3. Ice Skating

Ice skating is one of most wintry and festive activities this season, and Tokyo has several outdoor ice skating rinks in a central area. Have a great time with festive ice skating rinks with hot snacks, drinks and illuminations.

Onsen is one of must-do things in Japan for every tourist through the year, but the best season to enjoy it is winter. The hot onsen bath feels so much better when outside is cold, and even better when the bath is outdoor. Chichibu Night Festival or Chichibu Yomatsuri (秩父夜祭) is a traditional festival held in Chichibu City from 1st to 6th December annually. The festival lasts for 6 days, but the main events are held on 3rd December displaying a parade with massive floats and fireworks

7. Hasedera Autumn Leaves Illumination

Hase Temple (or Hasedera) is a temple in Kamakura City, founded in 8th century. The hill-top temple complex is home to a gorgeous Japanese garden with maple trees, and it is surrounded by the beautiful nature. In autumn, the view of the historical temple and colourful autumn leaves can be enjoyed, and the special light-up is held from late November to early December annually.

8. Disney Christmas

Numbers of special events are held at Tokyo Disney Resort (Disneyland and DisneySea) through the year, but the best one comes at the end of the year! Disney Christmas brings 100% Christmas vibes as the whole park will be decorated with the Christmas theme from early November to 25th December.

9. Hot Pot Dishes

There are several winter seasonal foods in Japan, but our favourite is definitely hot pot dishes. Hot pot dish is called Nabe in Japanese which comes with multiple ingredients in various kinds of flavours. Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki are also popular dish which are kind of hot pot dish.

That’s why Chichibu Night Festival has the charm of making people cheerful in the middle of chilly weather at night.

This feast is held in Chichibu Shrine, located at Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture, which is only 90 minutes away from central Tokyo. It is organized annually from December 2nd to 3rd, and is considered one of Japan’s top three float festivals with Kyoto’s Gion Festival and Takayama Matsuri.

During the celebration, the floats are adorned with beautiful lanterns, carpets, and wood carvings. They are accompanied by flute and drum music to represent the festive mood.

Another attraction is the fireworks display that lasts for two to three hours. You will find several standing food stalls lined by the streets offering delicious items.

If you want to catch the main highlight of Chichibu Yomatsuri, then you must have to attend it on 3rd December. The floats are displayed in their relevant neighborhood and Chichibu Shrine from the afternoon to early evening.

Around 7:00 PM, they are being pulled through the streets towards the city hall. And here, the climax takes place when one after another float is pulled up the slope.

You will see fireworks displays from 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM, which can be seen from many places around the town.

Go On A Osaka Shinsekai Food Tour 

Discover the true Osaka by exploring the local food at Shinsekai.  The Shinsekai neighborhood of Osaka is a bustling area that combines traditional and modern food.

Fill up on some of the best cuisine Japan has to offer. For a genuine local experience, go through and around the marketplaces that serve traditional Osakan cuisine.

Here are some local food recommendations for you to try at Shinsekai: The forst stall you should try is the takoyaki (battered octopus balls) stall. After that try some genuine Osakan kitsune Udon and Japanese-style chicken wings at an Izakaya restaurant.

Then try the locally made kushikatsu, which are skewered vegetables, meats, and shellfish that have been delicately deep-fried.

Then head to smaller Japanese local restaurants for delicious nikudoufu or beef and tofu stew, yakitori, and local beverages – both alcoholic and non alcoholic.

Around here, you’ll also find a restaurant that specializes in gyoza dumplings.

Then you can head to another Japanese restaurant in the same line to eat some tonpeiyaki with edamame and karaage. 

After this for dessert, you can try the Japanese castella cake at the market!

Be Mesmerized with The Winter Illumination

One of the top attractions of Japan’s winter month is definitely the glittering illuminations events.

When the daytime is suitable for exploring different attractions, your nights will be more colorful with all of these glittering light events.

And, the good thing is, most of these winter illuminations take place in urban areas like Tokyo.

For example, you may go to Yebisu Garden Place, Roppongi Hills Christmas, Meguro River Minno no Illumination, Shinjuku Southern Terrace Winter Illumination, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, Marunouchi Illumination, Odaiba Illumination, and so on.

Most of these events run over the whole month of December, but few are held until Christmas.

So, while visiting Tokyo in December, try to attend as much illumination as possible because each one has a different vibe.

But, Tokyo is not the only place where you can admire this type of event.

Go to Shirakawago Village: A Winter Wonderland

Shirakawago Village is such a spot that knows how to mesmerize people with its magical panorama.

Although you can visit this town all year round, the winter attraction is unique and breathtaking.

From mid-December, snow starts falling around this town, and the roof of the Gassho Zukuri houses gets covered by it. And this snowfall enhances the beauty of the village to another level.

Even if the daytime panorama is stunning, I admire the night beauty most.

In winter, an illumination event is held at night, making the town look straight out of a fairy movie.

The best part is, you can even stay in these old-style houses and enjoy the chilly environment coupled with a mug of hot coffee.

I think, if you want to escape the city lights, this will be a perfect hideout.

Explore Biei Town in Hokkaido

Blue Pond, which is situated in Biei Town, Hokkaido. It was made while preventing mudflow from the outburst of Mount Tokachi reaching the town.

It became popular as it reflects the color blue. It’s because of the presence of Hydrogen Peroxide in the water, which turns into a rainbow of different blue shades based on the season.

And the best time to witness the blue pond is during winter when it’s encircled with snow because the blue color compliments the pristine white.

It looks even more impressive after the evening as the pond is illuminated with spotlights, and the color of the water reflects on the snow.

Well, you won’t come all the way to Biei to see the blue pond only, right?

Even I will not let that happen because you can’t afford to miss the spectacular Shirahige Waterfalls. It is nestled only half an hour drive away from Biei town.

It’s rather unusual compared to other Japanese waterfalls as it flows from an underground river. The elegance of the fall becomes particularly stunning in winter when frost-covered trees and twinkling icicles flatter the blue river below.

The light-up event in the cold season makes the aura more magical, leaving you breathless.  

After you experience the attraction of the whole Biei town, you may go to the Yumoto Shirogane Onsen hotel to stay overnight and enjoy a relaxing bath in the spa’s lukewarm water.

As Biei is one of the good places to go in December, I think you shouldn’t miss out on any of these stunning locations at any cost.

Try Out Ice Skating

One of the most trendy winter activities in Japan is ice skating, which can be enjoyed in the chilly environment of December.

You can choose to drop by the Fuji Q Highland amusement park situated nearby Mt. Fuji, in Fujiyoshida city. This park has one of the largest skating rinks where you can satisfy your longing for some fun ice skating.

After skating, if you want to do something crazier, then riding the roller-coaster will be a top-notch choice to feel the cool air.

Just put your hand up, and let go of all the fear!

Aside from these, there are other fun rides that you may try out too.

Now, if you want to stay within Tokyo, there are several outdoor ice skating rinks in the central area.

For example, Urban Dock Lalaport Toyosu, Tokyo Midtown, Sacas Square, Tokyo Skytree Town Ice Skating Park, Futako Tamagawa Rise are some of the best ice skating rinks in Tokyo.

You will see people of all ages here, from young couples to cute kids.

So, if you are in Japan with your sweetheart, how about going out on a romantic date . I mean, if your other half doesn’t know how to skate, you can try to hold and spend some fun and romantic moments.

Visit Kyoto to See Its Attractions

I can’t imagine someone coming to Japan and not visiting Kyoto. As it is one of the top cities of Japan explored by tourists, you will be blessed with many eye-catching sites.

For about 10 days in December, the Arashiyama Hanatouro Festival takes place in western Kyoto.

During the celebration, the Arashiyama area and the Sagano Bamboo Forest are colorfully illuminated with open-air lanterns.

These lanterns brighten up the trees and bamboos of the forest, creating a fantastic night time sight.

The lights are being turned on at 5 PM and glitter until 8:30 PM. Several temples and shrines beside the light-up route also remain open for tourists to visit at night.

After wandering around the pathway of the bamboo forest, you may head to Togetsukyo Bridge to see the art display and pale blue lights shining.

Also, the Nonomiya Shrine, Okochi Sanso Villa, Jojakko-ji temple, and the Poet’s hut Rakushisha are all illuminated and waiting for your visit.

The other must-visit places of Kyoto are Gion District, Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kinkaku-ji, Nijo Castle, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kyoto Botanical Garden, Philosopher’s Path, Kodai-ji Temple, and many more.

Experiencing a hot onsen bath is a must-do thing in Japan for every traveler, and the best season to indulge yourself in one is the winter.

When your body is exhausted or wants to escape from the cool environment, a hot spring bath will be the perfect treat.

As we Japanese people love this type of relaxation, there are loads of onsen scattered around all over the country to meet the need.

You can choose to feel the chill of the outside by going on an outdoor onsen like Lake Toya Onsen (in Hokkaido), Matsudai Shibatoge Onsen Unkai (in Niigata), Lake Kawaguchi Onsen (in Yamanashi), Maguse Onsen (in Nagano), and Tamatebako Onsen (in Kagoshima).

There are a great number of things to do in Tokyo in December, and one of them is roaming around some Christmas markets.

Well, I will feel really pleased if you stay in Japan till the 31st night. Who knows, maybe we end up counting from 10 to 1 together without knowing each other in person.

I participate in the Tokyo Bay Countdown Cruise most of the time because it shows gorgeous fireworks, and the environment feels more romantic to me.

Also, Universal Studios Japan has its own countdown party, which has a totally different vibe with all of its adorable characters participating along.

You will find countdown parties in almost every big city in Japan that all are equally fun and exciting.

Just choose whatever place you want and see all the sparkling fireworks that light up the sky of our country.

Japan Weather During December

From December to February is the winter season in Japan. As December is the beginning of this season, the cold is milder than in January and February.

The temperature at the start of the month is warmer than later.

Here is a detailed chart of average temperatures according to different cities.

As mentioned, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Fukuoka daily high temperatures are still relatively warm than other cities.

However, Sapporo (capital of Hokkaido) and the other northern cities are much colder, with low temperatures decreasing to minus degrees sometimes.

On the other hand, Okinawa’s tropical & subtropical islands are nicely warm but not hot.

You may expect snow in Hokkaido and the northern parts of Japan, but there is a possibility of little rain in other places.

Osaka and Tokyo remain sunny in December, which makes up for the cooler environment.

Essential Travel Packing Tips for December in Japan

For your December holiday trip to Japan, here is a list of things you should pack.

1. Insulated Jacket: For visiting northern parts of Japan, you need a well-insulated Jacket. Also, on the mainland, the temperature drops after evening, so you will need them.

2. Warm Innerwear: Innerwear is the extra layer of clothing that will give you the additional warmth you need.

3. Hand gloves/ Finger Gloves: A pair of hand gloves are required in Sapporo and the other colder regions. However, if you are not comfortable holding something with gloves, you can consider taking finger gloves. It will help you hold the camera, coffee mug, and browse your smartphone.

4. Warm socks: Carry a few pairs of warm socks cause you have to take off your shoes in some places like temples & shrines and even while entering someone’s house. So, winter socks are a must-item to keep your toes warm.

5. Long-sleeved t-shirts and long pants.

6. Some light outfits: For relatively warm daytime.

7. Comfy pair of shoes: I suggest you take well worn-off shoes. It will help you not have blisters while enjoying walking tours.

8. High boots: For places where it may snow like Hokkaido.

9. A mid-heavy jacket or cardigan: Some regions don’t feel over-the-top freezy. Hence, it is wise to keep a mid-heavy jacket or cardigan with you.

10. Sunscreen: If you want to go skiing, your skin can be damaged by the sunray. Therefore, pack sunscreen to protect your pretty skin.

11. A mid-sized backpack: To carry your essential travel items while leaving your hotel room for visiting attraction points.

12. Heating pads: It’s not necessary that you have to carry heat pads all the way from your home to Japan. In our country, you can purchase them from any convenience store. And they can quickly warm up your hands and feet.

13. Don’t forget your other mandatory items: Travel documents, toothbrush, mobile charger, power bank, camera, a mini first-aid kit, necessary skincare products.

Tourist Statistics & Expected Costs When Traveling To Japan In December

Japan sees relatively lower foreign tourists in December. Most of the people who travel during this month are here to spend a delightful Christmas with their families.

You will even find groups of adults and young people coming to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Local Japanese people even take holidays at the end of the month to enjoy the last days of the year. They often visit the countryside to escape from the bustling city life.

Even the winter vacation of Japanese schools starts in late December, which causes rush in amusement parks and other entertainment locations.

That’s why I suggest you book accommodation and train tickets beforehand, if you are traveling to Japan at Christmas time and stay till New Year’s Eve.

And, of course, the hotel price during any event will raise more than usual, hence be prepared to spend a few extra bucks.

But, if you want to avoid as much crowd as possible, I recommend you to travel during early December.

Winter in Japan is absolutely so December is a good time to visit Japan. Japan in December will be covered in snow so you can take part in a lot of winter activities during December. Other than that, Japan has a lot of events and activities for tourists and locals in the month of December since it’s the Christmas season. You can enjoy beautiful illuminations wherever you go in Japan in December, you can go snowboarding or skiing. Other than that, you’ll also get to eat some seasonal Japanese dishes in December.

If you want to experience the thick snow in December in Japan then go to cities like Hokkaido, Akita, and Fukushima. If you want to enjoy the snow but still want it to be mildly sunny then stay in Tokyo or Osaka. Days are crisp and dry and there's a festive vibe, especially in the cities where Christmas lights abound and locals are getting involved in 'forget the year' parties! During December, temperatures in Hokkaido drop dramatically (avg temp: 2°C) as Siberian weather fronts bring cold winds and the arrival of snow, transforming Japan’s northernmost island into a winter wonderland. It’s time to hit the slopes as the much anticipated ski season in Sapporo and Niseko begins in earnest. 

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima

December is the driest month of the year across Honshu, typified by crisp, sunny and short days, with sunset in Tokyo around 4.30pm (avg temp: 8-9°C). Temperatures in Northern Honshu (around Tohoku) and the Japanese Alps are cooler than in Honshu’s cities and snowfall is common in December, although Hokkaido’s ski resorts offer better skiing opportunities this month to those on Honshu.   

Shikoku & Kyushu

Matsuyama, fukuoka, nagasaki.

Despite being further south, temperatures across the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu are similar to those in Honshu during December (avg temp: 8-9°C), with Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Matsuyama experiencing their driest month of the year. Christmas lights in Fukuoka rival those in Tokyo as seasonal shoppers flock to the city.

Okinawa and Japan’s southwest islands enjoy some of the country’s mildest temperatures in December, with the mercury pushing the warmer side of 20°C. I’ve always heard that Kyoto is beautiful no matter what time of year and winter is no exception. Having been lucky enough to explore this city in summer and winter, I can confidently say that a winter visit to Kyoto is the perfect addition to your Japan itinerary.

Here’s my guide that provides a curated list of things to do in Kyoto in the winter & tips to ensure that your visit to the cultural heart of Japan is nothing short of magical!

Winter in Kyoto is usually cold but mild, bringing in the occasional rain and snow. The average temperature ranges from the mid-30s(°F) to high of low-50s(°F). The weather in Kyoto is fairly dry so while it might snow, it won’t last more than a few days.

• December: average high of 53°F (12°C) / average low of 36°F (2°C). December tends to be cold and dry , where you’re more likely to encounter chilly, clear days than rain or snowfall.
• January: average high of 48°F (9°C) / average low of 33°F (1°C). January is when you’re most likely to see some snow , though it’s often light and melts quickly.
• February: average high of 50°F (10°C) / average low of 34°F (11°C). By February, temperatures will start to gradually rise, bringing warmer days . Snow is also less frequent, making it an excellent time to visit if you prefer milder winter conditions .

While a Kyoto winter does get cold, layers will help you weather the temperature fluctuations throughout the day so that you can enjoy the serenity and beauty of the city at all hours.

If you missed a visit to Japan in the fall but still want to see the last traces of fall foliage, Kyoto in December is perfect for you. Early December is ideal to see the remnants of orange and red hues before the trees shed the last of their leaves. You’ll also encounter milder temperatures and minimal amount of rainfall during this time.

• October through December 11 (Toji Temple Evening Illuminations): During the first 2 weeks of December, lights will illuminate the last of the autumn leaves at Toji Temple.
• December 25 (Christmas): Although Christmas is not an official holiday in Japan, it is growing in popularity and celebrated in a commercial way. Popular destinations including Kyoto come alive with beautiful Christmas light installations that embody the holiday spirit.

If you’re looking to see the city in snow, January is the best month to visit. Being the coldest of the winter months, you’re most likely to find snow-white landscapes during this time of year.

Holidays & Festivals in Kyoto in January

• January 1-3 (Shōgatsu): Shōgatsu, also known as New Year’s Day, is one of Japan’s most cherished traditional holidays. During this time, people take a break from their daily routines and head to the shrines and temples for Hatsumōde , the first prayer of the year. If you’re in Kyoto in the New Year period, be sure to visit any one of the main shrines – like Fushimi Inari – to participate in this timeless tradition yourself.

If you can’t visit Japan in spring, you want to see flowers bloom, and you hate the cold, then February is a good time of year to visit Kyoto. Ideally, you’ll want to visit in mid to late February to catch the plum blossoms in full bloom. While not as prolific as cherry blossoms , the blooming plum trees are just as beautiful and equally worth seeing.

• February 25 ( Baiksai Plum Blossom Festival ): Held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, the Baiksai Plum Blossom Festival is a popular event in Kyoto in February. Not only is the shrine one of the best places to see plum blossoms in Kyoto , but you’ll have the unique chance to be served tea by a maiko on this specific day only.

The Best 8 Things to Do in Kyoto in the Winter

Kiyomizudera, also known as the “Pure Water Temple,” is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a must-see while in Kyoto. Established in 780 AD, Kiyomizudera and its large wooden terrace stands atop a hill that provides panoramic views of the city and trees below . This is my absolute favorite thing to do in Kyoto for any season – even the streets ( Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka ) leading up to Kiyomizudera are beautiful! 

❄️ Kiyomizudera in Winter: Depending on when you visit in winter, the surrounding landscapes undergo a stunning transformation where vibrant, fall hues gradually give way to a serene, white canvas . It’s also less crowded in the winter so you’ll be able to appreciate the temple’s beauty in a more tranquil setting compared to the busy cherry blossom or fall foliage season.

Gion is Kyoto’s famous geisha district whose atmospheric streets will have you feeling like you’ve transported back to ancient Japan.

The heart of Gion is Hanami-koji Street , which is lined with well-preserved machiya (wooden) houses and ochayas (tea houses). In the evenings , Gion comes alive with glowing lanterns that illuminate the streets. This is not only one of the most picturesque time of day but the most opportune to spot geishas and maikos (geisha apprentices) wandering down the alleyways in their exquisite kimonos.

❄️ Gion in Winter: Kyoto in the winter is still a great time to experience the timeless charm of Gion’s lantern-lit streets , geisha culture, and traditional wooden houses. Some of these establishments have even been been converted into restaurants that serve Kyoto specialities such as kaiseki ryori (Japanese multi-course meal) or Nabe (Kyoto-style hotpot primarily served in winter).

Fushimi Inari is another one of Kyoto’s most recognizable sites. Known for its 10,000 vermillion torii gates , this impressive complex of shrines spans 4 kilometers at the base of Mount Inari.

❄️ Fushimi Inari in Winter: As you follow the shrine’s winding paths, take the time to look up at the snow-covered gates and the picturesque backdrop around you. If you’re in Kyoto at the beginning of the new year (typically January 1-3), don’t miss the opportunity to partake in Hatsumode – the first shrine visit of the year. As you follow the winding paths and admire the snow-covered torii gates of Fushimi Inari, pray for blessings and good luck for the year ahead.

In the northwest part of Kyoto, you’ll find Arashiyama Bamboo Forest . One of Japan’s most-visited bamboo forests, Arashiyama is filled with tall, bamboo stalks that are split apart by a path that stretches as far as the eye can see.

❄️ Arashiyama in Winter: While a popular destination year-round, the forest takes on a different kind of beauty in the winter. When covered with snow, snowfall delicately blankets the trees to create a magical, winter wonderland that’s ready to be explored.

Toji Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s best known for its towering five-story pagoda . Although not as popular as Kiyomizudera, it’s still worth walking around the temple grounds as well as exploring the Kōbō-ichi flea marke t which is only held on the 21st of each month.

❄️ Toji Temple in Winter: Depending on which month you visit in winter, you can either catch the last bits of fall or the first snowflakes of the season. If you’re visiting during the first 2 weeks of December, you might even catch the final days of the evening autumn illuminations .

Take a walk through Kifune, Kyoto’s oldest waterfall shrine. Legend says that the goddess Tamayoro-hime instructed the people to build a sacred site, which they dedicated to their local god Takaokami no Kami (the god of providing water).

❄️ Kifune Shrine in Winter: Kifune Shrine is one of the most beautiful spots to visit in Kyoto in the winter. Located just 30 minutes from the main center, see for yourself why the Kifune winter landscape is beautiful enough to be featured in promotional material for the city.

Kinkakuji is a Zen temple whose top two floors are gilded with pure gold leaf, giving it the moniker the “Golden Pavilion.” As you explore the grounds, you’ll be in constant awe of the temple and its reflection on the Kyoko-chi pond below.

❄️ Kinkaku-ji in Winter: Winter is one of the best times to see Kinkakuji Temple. It’s especially picturesque in January, when its roof and surrounding gardens are most likely to be covered in snow . There will also be less people who visit during this time of year so you’ll have a greater chance of basking in the magical and tranquil ambiance of Kinkakuji undisturbed.

Head to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in the northern part of Kyoto to witness the first sightings of plum blossoms (“ume'”) for the season. Often associated with the start of spring, plum blossoms or “ume” are some of the earliest flowers to bloom, typically in mid-February through mid-March.

❄️ Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Winter: Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the most famous spot to see the plum blossoms in Kyoto. If you find yourself in Kyoto on February 25th, 2024, don’t miss the enchanting Baiksai Plum Blossom Festival which offers the unique opportunity to be served tea by a geisha.

Now that we’ve explored the must-dos of Kyoto in winter, here are 7 hidden gems that are worth checking out if you’re looking for even more of Kyoto’s winter charm:

• Nijo Castle – This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts camellias (December-April), plum blossoms (mid-February – mid-March), and snowscapes (most likely in July) through the winter season.  
• Sanzenin Temple – This serene temple in rural Ohara (~1 hour north of Kyoto Station) offers a peaceful escape from the crowds of Kyoto. Its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture make it a popular spot to visit during the winter season.
• Amanohashidate – Known as “The Bridge to Heaven,” Amanohashidate is a breathtaking sandbar that’s one of Japan’s 3 most scenic views. The snowy landscape adds a magical touch to this already incredible natural marvel. Note, while technically within Kyoto prefecture, Amanohashidate is a 2 hour train ride from Kyoto Station. 
• Hozukyo Gorge – With its towering cliffs and turquoise river, Hozukyo Gorge is a beautiful and tranquil place for a walk during the winter. 
• Ryoanji Temple – Famous for its Zen rock garden, Ryoanji Temple makes for a truly serene and meditative experience whilst enveloped in the peaceful, snow-covered surroundings. 
• Philosopher’s Path – This picturesque stone pathway along the canal is a popular destination in any season, though it won’t be as picturesque as when the cherry blossoms or fall leaves are in full force.  
• Nishiki Market – Known as Kyoto’s Kitchen, Nishiki Market is a great place to stop by one of the food stalls to taste Kyoto- and seasonal- specialities.
• Kurama Onsen – Unfortunately, Kyoto’s most popular onsen has been indefinitely closed since the pandemic.
• Hanatouro Bridge – While this used to be one of the most popular places to see winter illuminations in Kyoto, this event permanently ended in 2021 .
• Kayabuki no Sato – Although quite picturesque, this is ultimately the home of working locals in the area. If you do visit, please treat the village and its people with the utmost respect.
• Kyoto Hirogawara Ski Resort – If you’re interested in skiing, the ski resorts in Nagano or Hokkaido are world-renowned and just all-around better suited for skiers and snowboarders.  
• Togetsukyo Bridge & Tenryuji Temple – While both sites will be less-crowded, they’re also much less scenic compared to spring and fall.

The key to staying warm and comfortable in Kyoto is layers! You’ll want to bring thermal undergarments (leggings & shirt), lightweight sweaters , a waterproof or water-resistant jacket , and a scarf .

While not 100% necessary, it will be nice to have a pair of waterproof boots especially if you’re visiting in January. 

The best location to stay in Kyoto is in the Gion district . Although pricier compared to other parts of the city, this area is undeniably the heart of the city that makes Kyoto charming and timeless. 

Below are some of the best places to stay in Kyoto in the winter, ranging from traditional ryokans (Japanese inns) to modern hotels .If you’re having trouble finding a place to stay either because everything is booked out or prices are too high, consider broadening your search to neighboring cities like Osaka .

• TOP RYOKAN OVERALL: Tawaraya Ryokan Often regarded as one of the best ryokans in Japan , Tawaraya offers impeccable service and traditional charm. Bookings are coordinated via email. 
• CENTRAL RYOKAN: Gion Hatanaka (⭐️ 8.1) Located in the famous Gion district, this ryokan has all the traditional elements and is located in a central location.
• BEST AFFORDABLE RYOKAN: Gion Ryokan Karaku (⭐️ 8.6) A more affordable option in the Gion district with a warm, traditional ambiance at ~$200/night. 
• CENTRAL HOTEL: Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion (⭐️ 8.7) Situated in the heart of the Gion district, this contemporary hotel combines traditional Kyoto charm with modern luxury. It’s also a short walk from Kiyomizudera and Hanami-koji. 
• BOUTIQUE HOTEL: Kyoto Granbell Hotel (⭐️ 8.7)  A chic boutique hotel located 2 minutes from the Gion-Shijo Subway Station . 
• 🌅 Start your day early. Even though Kyoto is less busy in the winter, there will still be crowds at the most popular sites. 
• 🚶🏻‍♀️There is so much beauty in walking around Kyoto. Plan to see 2-3 things to do each day so that you have enough time to savor every minute of your visit, wander random alleyways, and discover new hidden gems. 
• ✈️ The closest airport to Kyoto is Osaka International Airport (Itami), which is about an hour away. However, Itami primarily services domestic flights so Kansai International Airport (KIX) will be your main access point to Kyoto if you’re coming from another country. It takes about 90 minutes by express train to get into Kyoto. 
• ❄️ Your Kyoto winter itinerary will change depending on the month you visit. If you want to see the last bits of fall foliage with milder temperatures and minimal rain, then come in early December. If you want to see the city and its sights covered in snow, January is your best bet. For plum blossoms, come towards the middle or end of February.

• You don’t like being cold
• You’re trying to avoid the rain
• You want to see vibrant foliage like fall leaves or cherry blossoms 
• You’re only planning to visit in the first few days of the New Year when businesses are mostly closed
• You want to go sightseeing without layering up

Yes, Kyoto is 100% worth visiting in the winter! It’s your chance to see the city transform into a snowy landscape, as well as catch the last leaves of fall or first blossoms of spring.

Visiting Kyoto during the winter months is absolutely incredible. 

With smaller crowds at the famous attractions, you’re more likely to have peaceful moments that allow you to truly appreciate the serene beauty of this city. Not only that, you’ll find breathtaking snowy landscapes at sites like Kifune shrine that provide an allure you won’t find in other seasons. 

While it’s undeniable that the best time to explore the city is between late March to early April during cherry blossom season, there’s something truly magical about Kyoto in the winter. 

If you decide to visit, I always recommend getting a Japan Rail pass as the best way to maximize your time in the country.

The sunshine is less intense, but the wind is relatively strong on many days, making the temperature feel cooler. The temperature can vary, so bring long sleeves, a sweater or jacket, and closed-toe shoes for those colder days. If you plan on going out on a boat, take a coat or a windbreaker with you.

Choosing the best time of year to visit Japan can be downright overwhelming. Each of Japan’s 4 distinct seasons has its draws and drawbacks (some more than others!). We’re going to break down exactly what to expect during winter, spring, summer, and fall so you can choose the best time to visit Japan based on your travel style and interests.

Japan has four distinct seasons: You’ve got the famed cherry blossoms in the spring, festivals in the summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and powdery snow come wintertime.

So this begs the question: 

What time of year is best to visit Japan?

In short, you’ll have the best chance of comfortable weather and fewer crowds in early spring (March – early April) and in autumn (late October – November). Our personal pick would be to visit Japan during November; but more on that later…

Let me backup… Truthfully there is no correct answer, as each season has its own unique draws (and drawbacks too).

But we’re not going to just leave ya there, hangin’.

We’re going to go over the pros and cons of visiting Japan during each season to help you decide which time of year is ideal for YOU.

We visited Japan in summer, fall & winter

When: mid-August (2019) 

Our experience:

• Very hot and humid in most places
• Lots of Japanese tourists and international travelers in the popular places
• We had a few days of typhoon weather
• Mount Fuji wasn’t on our route, but she was only visible for a handful of days of our trip, due to clouds.
• Felt too hot to be able to enjoy onsens as much as other times of the year

Would we recommend visiting Japan in August? 

It wouldn’t be my top recommendation, honestly. I found it very hot and muggy, and I would much prefer visiting when the temps are more comfortable.

When: mid-November (2023) 

• Comfortable temperatures and no humidity
• Colorful foliage in some areas (it differs quite a bit throughout the country)
• During our 3-week trip, we had a little light rain , but not much
• Clear views of Mount Fuji
• Perfect weather for soaking in onsen
• Crowds in popular areas for foliage viewing, but nothing overwhelming

Would we recommend visiting Japan in November? 

Absolutely! Autumn is perhaps my all time favorite time to travel anywhere — and Japan is no different. I think autumn will always be my favorite time to visit Japan!

When: early February (2015)

• Mild winter temperatures (we’re used to very cold winters, and this wasn’t bad for us)
• Snow in the mountains was magical
• Even though winter is said to be the best time to view Mount Fuji , she was covered in fog when we visited
• Onsens were very enjoyable (we had a private outdoor onsen while it was snowing, which was amazing!)
• Obviously the cities are still busy (because they’re highly populated), but the amount of tourists was lower than other seasons
• Good deals on accommodation since it was outside of peak season
• We saw a few plum blossoms in Tokyo that were blooming early, which was a pleasant surprise!

Would we recommend visiting Japan in February?  Yes! I think winter is one of the best times to visit Japan and it’s very underrated. Next time we visit in the winter, I want to add more outdoor onsens and a snowboarding trip in the legendary Japanese powder!

While not a large country exactly, Japan spreads more than 1,800 miles (2,900+ kilometers) north to south, from the island of Hokkaido in the northeast all the way down to the island of Okinawa in the southwest.

A distance that large means the weather from north to south varies quite a lot. Hokkaido can be freezing while the subtropical island of Okinawa can be experiencing a beach day.

For the purpose of this article, we’ll mostly be discussing the weather on the island of Honshu. 

Located in the middle of the country, Honshu is where Tokyo , Osaka and Kyoto are all located, and is where most international travelers will start and end their trip, especially if it is your first time in Japan .

Another thing to take into consideration is that Japan is a very mountainous country. Common sense tells us that when you venture to higher elevations, you’ll find colder temperatures.

Fun Example: We went up into the Japanese Alps in August and found a drastic temperature swing: 95°F (35°C) at sea level to 65°F (18°C) in the mountains. This same area has snow until as late as early July. Crazy, huh?!

Let’s chat about the sun, the snow, the rain, and those dreaded typhoons. We’ll go over what type of weather you should expect throughout the year and describe our experience with a typhoon.

We’re also going over some important information if you are interested in viewing Mount Fuji.

Spoiler alert: You won’t be able to see this iconic mountain for much of the year.

Stats on Japan weather & seasons:

• Hottest month in Japan: August (average 80°F/41°C)
• Coldest month in Japan: January (41°F/5°C)
• Rainiest months in Japan: June and September
• Driest months in Japan: December and January
• Most crowded month in Japan: late April – early May (aka “Golden Week”, explained in the section about Spring )
• Least crowded months in Japan: January – early March are the least popular times to visit, which can mean cheaper prices and less crowds

Note: Again, these stats are for the central island of Honshu. If you are planning to visit the northernmost island of Hokkaido, or Okinawa in the very south, be sure to look up their specific weather, as they vary from the rest of the county.

Rainy season in Japan: Early Summer

The majority of the country experiences a rainy season from June through mid-July.

The good news is that during the rainy season, there’s a roughly 45% chance of precipitation each day (data from Tokyo), meaning you’ll have some dry days too! Some of those rainy days will be heavy, while others will be sunny before or after the rain.

Interesting Fact: Tokyo is one of the rainiest big cities on earth! In fact, it has more than double the amount of annual rainfall as London. Say whaaaat?!

Despite rain, you’ll find life goes on as usual in Japan, as locals are used to it. Do as the Japanese do and buy an umbrella to stay dry!

Typhoon season in Japan: Late Summer

Late May through October is known as typhoon season in Japan, with the majority of typhoons occurring in August and September. Data from the last 30 years show that an average of 11 typhoons approach the coast per year.

What is a typhoon?

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone. They are formed in the same way a hurricane forms, and the only real difference is the location at which they occur .

What is a typhoon like in Japan?

We visited Japan during the month of August, which as you now know is the peak of typhoon season. And one typhoon made landfall during our visit.

So how bad was it, really?

This was our experience: 

The entire day leading up to the typhoon was sunny with blue skies, and we both had this feeling that it wouldn’t be that bad.

But everyone was talking about it and how strong it would supposedly be. There was talk about trains shutting down, and we had a food tour cancel on us because restaurants were closing up shop.

But it’s beautiful outside, we thought naively. We put on rain jackets, grabbed our one umbrella and headed into town just as a drizzle began to start.

Soon, the winds increased and the rain started really coming down. But the trains still ran, and we decided to go catch a movie. By the time we got out of the show, the streets were mostly empty and the rain was really pounding, so despite our umbrella and rain jackets, we got completely soaked.

By the next morning, blue skies started peeking out from behind clouds and by the afternoon you would never know what had happened the previous night.

What to expect: Heavy rainfall and high winds, canceled and/or delayed trains, canceled tours. In some cases, it may only interrupt a day or two, and in others it might have longer-lasting effects. You should expect some plans to change since Japanese people take typhoons very seriously.

Best time of year to view Mount Fuji

Many visitors to Japan will want to glimpse the country’s most famous mountain, and for good reason — it’s absolutely stunning, and seeing Mount Fuji in person will be one of the highlights of your trip. That is, if you see her .

One thing many first-time visitors to Japan may not realize (ourselves included) is that Mount Fuji is notoriously shy. This means there is much of the year where your chances of seeing her are rare. Instead, this shy mountain will stay cloaked behind clouds and haze, only occasionally peeking through.

So what time of year will you have the best chance of seeing Mount Fuji?

• Best chances of seeing Mount Fuji: Based on data from years past, you will have the highest chance of seeing Mount Fuji between the months of November and February.
• Worst chances of seeing Mount Fuji: Alternatively, between April and August, you will have a slim chance of glimpsing this iconic mountain.

That said, nothing is promised when it comes to weather. 

We visited Japan for the first time during early February, when we should have had a good chance of seeing Fuji. We spent the night in Hakone and bought the (not so cheap!) Hakone Day Pass to get close to the mountain, yet we only saw WHITE FRICKIN’ CLOUDS.

And on the other hand, we’ve known people who have seen Fuji peek out during July and August, supposedly bad months for viewing the mountain.

But if you’re looking to get that iconic shot of a clear sky day and the mountain towering in the background in her famous symmetrical grandeur, late autumn through early spring will be your best bet at capturing this sight.

Japan’s seasons at a glance

Japan has 4 distinct seasons: The winter is cold and the summer is hot. If either of those would bother you, it’s easy to eliminate a season right off the bat.

Spring is famously known for stunning displays of cherry blossoms around the country . But when we say famous, we mean it. Japan gets very busy this time of year with domestic and international travelers, so if crowds bother you, this is another easy elimination.

Fall comes with spectacular autumn foliage , and while not as crowded as cherry blossom season, it’s not an unpopular time to travel.

We’re going to go over what to expect during each season in detail so you can better plan your trip to Japan.

But before we dive in…

Did you know there are 72 “seasons” in Japan?

The traditional Japanese calendar was split up into 24 sections, and each of those were further divided into 3 subsections, creating 72 “micro seasons” .

These micro-seasons last 5 days, and the names of some of them are poetic:

• Frogs start singing (May 5th – 9th)
• Great rains sometimes fall (August 3rd – 7th)
• Dew glistens white on grass (September 8th – 12th)
• Insects hole up underground (September 28th – October 2nd)
• Maple leaves and ivy turn yellow (November 2nd – 6th)

While this isn’t necessarily something people go by in modern times, it’s a good reminder that the weather and atmosphere changes very often in Japan and it’s important to be prepared for it all.

During the winter months, major cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto tend to enjoy mild temperatures, but you can find snow and colder temps in the mountains and on Hokkaido (the northernmost island in Japan).

Crowds tend to be fewer during the winter season, except for at the ski resorts where outdoor enthusiasts will be spoiled with some of the best powder in the world.

Winter comes with sunshine and blue skies that are statistically the clearest they’ll be all year long.

While winter may not be the first season you think of traveling, there’s actually a ton to do, and we think it is a great time to visit Japan .

• When is winter in Japan?  December – February
• Typical weather in Japan during the winter:  Dry, cold, & sunny
• Average winter temperatures:  35 ° F – 55 ° F (Tokyo) (2 ° C – 13 ° C)
• least crowded season, great for visiting Japan’s iconic landmarks
• Japan has great snow for skiing and snowboarding
• great time for onsens, snow monkeys and seeing scenic landscapes & villages dusted in snow
• cold weather, averaging around 43°F (6°C)
• some outdoor activities, like hiking and biking may be more difficult in the winter

Winter months at a glance

• December:  Third coldest month of the year, lots of Bonenkai (“forget the year”) parties and celebrations. Ski season begins in Sapporo.
• January:  Coldest month of the year, clear and sunny skies, snowy in the northern part of the country, best month for skiing and winter activities.
• February:  Second coldest month of the year, still great for skiing in the mountains, yet you can start seeing spring plum blossoms further south in the country.

Best things to do in the winter in Japan

• Go skiing or snowboarding
• Visit traditional villages like Shirakawa-go , which is stunning after a fresh show
• Go to the Sapporo Snow Festival (held for one week in February)
• Soak in an onsen (natural hot spring)
• Fill your belly with hot ramen noodle soup
• See “snow monkeys” at Jigokudani Monkey Park
• View Mount Fuji
• Photograph famous sights with a blanket of snow

• Sapporo:  December – March
• Nagano:  January – February

Winter is the best season to travel to Japan if…

• …you don’t mind colder temperatures
• …you want to ski or snowboard
• …you want to avoid the crowds
• …you want to save money and travel during off-peak season

What to pack for winter in Japan

• Lots of layers, including a versatile jacket, gloves and a hat
• Warm and comfortable footwear and socks
• Sunglasses (remember, this season has the sunniest days!)
• Hand warmers (you can buy these pretty much everywhere in Japan)
• Ski gear (if needed)

With stunning  sakura  (cherry blossoms) popping up all around the country and temperatures warming, it should come as no surprise that spring is a popular time to visit Japan. A  very  popular time, indeed.

If you travel to Japan in the spring, you’ll be rewarded with comfortable temperatures, beautiful blossoms, and  crowds .

• When is spring in Japan?  From March – May
• Typical weather in Japan during the spring:  Nice during the day, but chilly at night. Mostly sunny days with a more showers near the end of May.
• Average spring temperatures:  40 ° F – 70 ° F (Tokyo) (4 ° C – 21 ° C)
• comfortable temperatures
• beautiful cherry blossoms
• crowded (make travel plans far in advance!)
• things may be more expensive since it is peak season

What is Golden Week in Japan?

“Golden Week” is a series of four national holidays that all fall within the same week from April 29th – May 5th every year.

• April 29, Showa Day:  birthday of Emperor Showa, who ruled the country during World War II.
• May 3, Constitution Day ( Kenpo kinenbi ):  called  ,  this is the celebration of the Japanese constitution ratification in 1947.
• May 4, Green Day ( Midori no hi ):  similar to Earth Day, this holiday honors the environment.
• Pssst! For everyone else out there wondering why they don’t include young girls in this, there is a “Girls’ Festival” (Hina Matsuri) on March 3rd.

Many Japanese people have holiday from work during this time, so it is a popular time to travel for both international and domestic visitors.

If your trip falls during these dates (or even a bit before and after), you’ll have the unique opportunity to see some celebrations and mingle with lots of Japanese travelers.

But be warned, you should start booking your accommodation well in advance because rooms sell out in popular places, like Kyoto, for example. You’ll also want to reserve seats on trains ahead of your trip, otherwise you’ll be out of luck.

Should you avoid visiting during Golden Week in Japan?

I’m going to be honest, I don’t think we would travel to Japan during Golden Week because of the insane crowds.

If you want to see Cherry Blossom but aren’t excited about the prospect of crowds, we’d urge you to avoid Golden Week, and instead travel to Japan during early March.

When and where can you see cherry blossoms?

Cherry blossoms are only in bloom for roughly one week per location. They bloom at different times throughout the country, so if you want to extend the length of time you can view them, it’s best to travel south to north so you can see them for a longer period of time.

• Fukuoka: Late March – Early April
• Hiroshima: Late March – Early April
• Kyoto: First Week of April (very popular)
• Osaka: First Week of April (very popular)
• Tokyo: Late March – Early April (very popular)
• Kanazawa: 1st – 2nd week in April
• Matsumoto: 2nd- 3rd week in April
• Sapporo: Late April – Early May

Spring months at a glance

• March:  Temperatures are still cool, but it noticeably warms throughout the month. Skiing season in the mountains is starting to wind down, and toward the end of the month the first cherry blossoms start to reveal themselves.
• April:  This is the prime month for cherry blossom viewing, though many Japanese people have a whole week off from work (Golden Week), so most major cherry blossom sites will be incredibly crowded.
• May:  Very nice weather during the month of May — warm temperatures and sunny skies. Though it is technically the start of typhoon season, strong storms are very rare during the month of May.

Best things to do in the spring in Japan

• Head to Kyoto to photograph sakura (aka cherry blossoms) of course!
• Catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji
• Try some interesting new foods in Japan
• Take a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima to check out some of the city’s super important historical sites

Spring is the best season to travel if…

• …you don’t mind crowds
• …you want comfortable temperatures (not too cold or too hot)
• …you want to see the famous cherry blossoms
• …you can make your bookings well in advance
• …you don’t mind paying a bit more for hotels and tours during peak season

What to pack for spring in Japan

• Thicker layers if traveling in March
• Light jacket for April and May
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Hiking attire if you plan to hit the trails

Summer in Japan is the time for festivals and celebrations. The summer spans from June to August, with August being the busiest travel month because school is out and many Japanese people travel over the Obon holiday (August 13-15).

(Unlucky for us, we unknowingly decided to visit Japan for our second time in August…whoops!)

Be prepare on ways to beat the humidity because it can get pretty sticky. Also it’s rainy season and the start of typhoon season, so don’t forget your rain jacket and umbrella

• When is summer in Japan?  June – August
• Typical weather in Japan during the summer:  Hot, humid, sticky, and rainy. But not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
• Average summer temperatures:  70 ° F – 90 ° F (Tokyo) (21 ° C – 32 ° C)
• Festivals throughout the country during the summer months
• Prime season for outdoor activities like hiking
• great time to try scuba diving in Japan
• can get very humid
• rain is common at the beginning of summer (June – mid-July), and typhoons are common at the end of summer (August – September)

How bad is the heat in summer, really?

Over the last few years, I’ve realized I don’t handle extreme heat very well. I get tired and crabby much more quickly in the heat. Needless to say, I was very nervous about traveling to Japan during August — the hottest month of the year!

So what was it like?

Well, it did get pretty hot, like 98°F hot (37°C). And it did rain on us a few times but typically it would only last for 20-30 minutes and the rain would stop.

Some days were worse than others. After a rain, for example, it was actually pretty comfortable.

We’ve heard that summer in Tokyo is similar to summer in NYC, hot and humid. And Osaka in summer is similar to Washington D.C. in the summer, which is even more hot and humid. 

Knowing what to expect is half the battle , and this way you can prepare yourself for it.

All of our accommodation (even in tiny villages) had strong AC, so we never had an issue with being comfortable at night.

Summer months at a glance

• June:  The beginning of the month is quite nice, comparable to the weather in May. However,  tsuyu  (rainy season) starts around mid-June and last for about a month. It’s not rainy all day but there is a June gloom feeling that hangs around. Temperatures get warmer and the humidity increases as the month progresses.
• July:  Starts out rainy because of  tsuyu  (rainy season), this only lasts until mid-July. Temperatures and humidity continue to rise as this is typically the second hottest month of the year. Great time to see festivals including Kyoto famous Gion Matsuri festival.
• August:  The hottest month of the year in Japan. August is a good time to venture into the mountains to escape the heat. Many Japanese have August 13th-15th off because of Obon holiday, so try to avoid this time because it can get busy.

Best things to do in the summer in Japan

• Check out Tokyo’s digital art museum on a day that’s too hot or rainy to be outside
• Enjoy festivals including Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri
• Go hiking through the Japanese Alps or venture up to Hokkaido
• Scuba diving (apparently the diving is actually really good in Japan!)
• Head to the beach
• Watch a baseball game

Ever thought of going  scuba diving in Japan ?  Being an island nation, the diving in Japan is actually quite good, and being an off the radar scuba destinations means less crowded dive sites! If you are visiting Japan in the summer time, you’ll have the best conditions for diving all over the country.

Summer is the best season to travel if…

• …you don’t mind humidity and a bit of rain
• …you like outdoor activities like hiking and biking
• …you want to experience cultural festivals

What to pack for summer in Japan

• Anti-chafing cream
• Hand-held fan (you can buy these all over and they make a nice Japanese souvenir )
• Deodorant, finding quality deodorant in Japan is very difficult (we switched to natural deodorant several years ago and will never go back!)
• Light, loose clothing that wicks sweat
• Umbrella for rain and shade

Fall in Japan

With typhoon season peaking at the beginning of September, the start of fall in Japan is typically rainy depending on where you are. However, the weather starts to clear up in October and by November the leaves are changing.

• When is autumn in Japan?  September – November
• Typical weather in Japan during the autumn:  Rainy in September and beginning of October because of typhoon season
• Average autumn temperatures:  50 ° F – 80 ° F (Tokyo) (10 ° C – 27 ° C)
• nice temperatures
• beautiful fall foliage in countryside
• September can be a pretty humid and rainy month, but it starts to get better in October

When can you see fall foliage in Japan?

The colorful leaves peak a bit later than other places in the Northern Hemisphere, like North America and Europe. The best display of autumn colors can typically be seen toward the end of November and even through the beginning of December.

Autumn months at a glance

• September:  peak of typhoon season in the southern prefectures, there can be airport and train delays. But it is the month with the least amount of visitors so it will be less busy.
• October:  rainy in the beginning of the month but the temperatures start to drop making going outside more manageable.
• November:  cool, crisp and dry time of year. Autumn foliage peaks near the end of November

Best things to do during the fall in Japan

• Hike the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail
• Sneak some views of Mount Fuji
• See the fall foliage on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
• Eat sweet treats like deep fried maple leaves in Minoo Park
• Travel to Osaka for leaf peeping in the parks

It’s a good idea to check the calendar before booking your flight to Japan, as there are many national holidays that can affect your travels.

Some of these festivals will be fun to observe, but they can also mean trains book up quickly and hotels mark up their rates for peak times.

Festivals in Japan

In Japan, festivals are called  matsuri  and they take place all year long. This is a list of some of the more unique festivals in Japan.

• Feb 5-12:  Sapporo Yuki Matsuri  (Snow Festival), Sapporo, Hokkaido
• Late March:  Sumo Wrestling Spring Basho , Osaka
• Early June:  The Kaiko Kinenbi , Yokohama Port Opening Ceremony (Boat Races)
• July:  Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Matsuri  (Star Festival), Hiratsuka
• Late July:  Tenjin Matsuri  (Festival of the Gods), Osaka

In our opinion…

We’ve traveled to Japan in both the summer and the wintertime, and each had its own pros and cons.

Summer was hot and humid—like really humid—so we found ourselves sweating through our shirts daily. But we’ve been in hot and humid climates before, so honestly, it wasn’t anything we hadn’t dealt with before. But still, it wasn’t all that pleasant, and it wouldn’t be our season of choice.

The wintertime was picturesque in the countryside where the snow stuck to the ground. And in the big cities, we actually got many sunny, blue sky days which was a surprise. The cold temperatures made it fun to pop into cozy noodle shops or soak in hot onsens, whereas those activities were not quite so pleasant in the August heat.

We preferred winter over summer, because the crowds were fewer and we’re accustomed to cold weather, so we found it to be quite mild actually.

However, if we were able to choose, we would without a doubt, travel to Japan in the fall: early November, specifically.

November has a smaller chance of rain than October, and more comfortable temperatures than December.

The temperatures will have cooled off from the crazy summer humidity, yet it wouldn’t be too cold for hiking. It wouldn’t have quite the same crazy crowds as cherry blossom season brings. And fall foliage in Japan is something we’ve been dreaming about seeing!

Alternatively, early March would offer the beginnings of cherry blossom season, comfortable weather, and less crowds than those you’ll find late April and early May during Golden Week.

How many days do you need in Japan?

There’s so much to see and do in Japan that it can be overwhelming trying to decide how long your trip should be. Ideally, 2-3 weeks  will give you enough time to see iconic and lesser-known sights as well as recover from a long travel day and potentially a big time difference.
