It uses Dropbox to store and sync your journal across devices, if you so choose.That Dropbox sync option is no joke either. It stores your journal on Dropbox, and syncs quickly and effectively. This means that if you switch out phones, it's a breeze to access your journal from a new device. It adds a layer of accessibility that just cannot be overstated. Nobody wants the hassle of trying to figure out how to transfer their journal when they upgrade devices, and with Dropbox support you won't need to worry. Bottom line: Diaro gives you a decent experience that will let you focus on your journaling without bogging you down in many features. One more thing: The biggest perk of upgrading to Pro is the ability to link up with your Dropbox which allows you to backup and export your journal entries for better safe keeping.

Penzu aims to offer you a stress free journaling experience. When you first get started you'll create a new journal, and name it. This is where your entries will be stored. The free version is a very bare-bone approach to journaling: you'll be able to write entries, add in photos, and make some tweaks to the format, but that's about it. Penzu Pro gives you access to unlimited journals, custom journal covers, custom fonts, 256-bit encryption security, reminders to journal at specific times of the day and even more.Penzu's golden feature, and the one that might really grab your attention, is it's security lock. A digital journal is harder to access than a normal one, and that lends itself to being more secure. Penzu takes the fact that your journal may well be where your most private thoughts are stored and aims to give you protection to make sure no one has eyes on it, unless you have given them access. For years I've tried to keep a journal for my life and work. I've purchased several paper journals . Despite these attempts, I never established a habit of regular journaling, especially for work .

But it didn't stick. Some days I'd forget to bring it with me, other days I'd get too busy to spend the time to write. I recognized the importance of regular reflection & planning, but I couldn't always get it to work for me.

Then I tried a digital journal .

The app was simple - every day (or week), I'd receive a notification in my email inbox encouraging me to reply.

I'd add a response over email. It was super simple to use, and the habit stuck!

This made me realize that digital journals have massive benefits , especially if you need help establishing the habit.

In the rest of this post, I'm going to share a list of the best digital journals or journaling apps that you can use to kickstart a regular habit of reflection & planning.

The  Five Minute Journal app  is based off the bestselling physical journal. In the morning you receive specific prompts on your iPhone/iPad or Android such as:

Then in the evening, you can answer questions like:

• How could I have made today even better?

Additionally, you can add a photo to your post and you'll receive a daily quote that you can share on social media . This is an effective structure and covers the key aspects of journaling. It's ideal for beginners who are trying to build a regular habit of journaling, but if you're looking to customize entries, prompts, and the cadence; you may need to  look elsewhere .

The app has close to a 5-star review (over 10,000 reviews) on the  Google Play store  and  iTunes .

Day One  is a personal journaling app that is available across the entire iOS ecosystem (including iPads and a Mac app) and Android. This app is much more free-form than structured apps like  Friday  or the Five Minute Journal; it's a bit more like an open-ended digital diary.

There's quite a few useful features you may like in Day One:

• Advanced Encryption/Security
• Various integrations (it will pull in your posts from other systems, available on the Premium version)
• Location tagging
• Markdown formatting
• Export/backup options

The only downside to Day One is that it's open-ended, so you will need to come up with your own journaling prompts . For beginners, staring at an empty page can be intimidating.

Cost:  $35/year

Next up, we have  Penzu , one of the earliest digital journaling apps available ( founded in 2008 !). Penzu is very similar to Day One, as it's more of a freeform diary app vs. being a structured journal. It boasts more than 2 million users.

Penzu offers a free version, and two paid offerings. The free plan offers unlimited entries, access to mobile apps, and basic font options. Yes, the reminders are included in the free plan.

Unfortunately, the app seems to have lost a bit of its luster over the past couple of years - it looks like only one founder is still working on the project (see  LinkedIn company  page). The app currently has a 4.3 star rating on the  iTunes store  and 4.3 stars on the  Play store .

The paid offerings have features like:

• Various Journal Covers
• Different Background colors
• Custom reminders

Cost:  $19-$49/year

Friday might be an interesting  alternative  worth considering.

5. Dabble.me

As I mentioned in the beginning of the article, I used to use  Ohlife  before it shut down.  Dabble.me  is the closest alternative I've found to the  email-based journaling method . As I mentioned before, this app delivers an email on a regular interval. All you need to do is reply via email. You can see in the screenshot below, it will also show a past update:

If you live in your email inbox, this is worth a second look. The free plan offers restricted functionality, like the email notifications are sent every other week. 

The paid offering unlocks the following features, such as:

• Ability to change the frequency
• Attach a photo
• Edit entries
• Rich text formatting
• Year in Review

If you are looking for a simple way to start journaling, Dabble.me is worth a look, or you could consider  an alternative .

Cost:  $36/year

Daybook  is another journaling app similar to Day One or Penzu. The user experience is extremely minimal (see example below), but it bills itself as a free cloud-based journaling app. 

One major benefit is that the app is free. It has over 16,000 reviews on the  Google Play store  as well, with close to a 5-star rating. There's an  iOS app  as well.

7. Journey.cloud

Journey  is the new kid on the block and appears to be  the most popular regular journaling app in this list , with over 65,000 reviews on the  Google Play store  and nearly 2,000 reviews on  iTunes . Once again, it's pretty similar to Penzu and Day One, but it looks like Journey is a newer, more up-to-date version work exploring.

Similar to other apps, the free plan offers basic journaling capabilities, but you will need to upgrade to access advanced functionality like:

• Unlimited entries
• Create an entry from email
• Pull in social media posts from Zapier

This pricing isn't obvious from their website, which is a little disappointing and a bit sketchy. With that being said, they seem to have many happy users.

Ok, here's an interesting pick.  Daylio : a "micro diary and mood tracker." I've been using it for a couple weeks and have found it to be an interesting alternative to the traditional journaling apps.

Unlike traditional journaling apps, you are prompted to journal with "labels" and short snippets of text vs. being a pure "writing" app . You also share your general mood/sentiment on a regular basis.

This breaks down the barriers to journaling because it's  so easy to use . This app boasts a crazy number of reviews on the  Google play  store - over 250k! Additionally, the iOS app has over  20k reviews .

The free plan restricts certain feature and is ad-supported. The premium plan offers the following functionality:

• Unlimited moods
• Unlimited reminders
• Unlimited goals
• Ability to export entries
• Automatic backups
• Various themes

Overall, I really like the approach Daylio is taking, especially for people who are looking for a new digital journal app. With that being said, I think there is immense power to spending some time writing things down in a structured way. Sentiment tracking is only one piece of the puzzle.

9. 750 Words

This is called  750 Words  and it's based on  morning pages  from the book,  The Artist's Way . The general theme is that you should write in a stream of consciousness. The process can be  therapeutic . 750 words will keep track of your word count , sentiment, and how frequently you write, which can be helpful to know.

If you are a writer or someone who wants to write more often (like me), you should check this out. If you are a beginner, this habit takes quite a bit of effort to stick.

10. GoodNotes

If you're a visual thinker and you need more than a text-only journaling system, take a look at  GoodNotes . A stand-out feature to GoodNotes is how flexible it is. You can quickly take notes with shapes, different highlight colors, and even in your handwriting. Customize the flow of the pen.

Create shapes, move them, stretch them.

Even add photos to your day's events.

It works as a Mac app, on your iPhone, or iPad.

Others use it like a  digital bullet journal system , and its flexibility makes it easy to do so. Because of its wide-open format and design, it positions itself both as an Evernote alternative and a digital journaling app.

It's simple to do both, especially with their Notebook feature, which is essentially a filing system. There are different canvasses, including a blank page or grid-style. Can more than 4.8 stars with 17,000+ reviews be wrong?

Momento is an app where you can capture everything that you do in your life. It’s a multi-purpose private journal that can benefit you as a personal life journal, a work journal for keeping track of your tasks, and much more. Journey is a journal/calendar application that lets you write down everything you need to throughout your day on an elegant, meticulous interface.

Through the drop-down menu to the left you can quickly access the five main categories in Journey: Journal, Calendar, Photos, Atlas, and Inspirations. In the first and second one you can write anything freely and create reminders with time, place, and weather forecasts.

In the Photos tab in Journey you can upload as many images as you want from your Android device to create a photo album to keep your best memories. As with the journal, the app automatically lets you add the time and location.

The last tab in Journey, called 'Inspirations', lets you look over loads of motivational phrases. It's not particularly useful, but some of them are interesting to read.

Journey is a good journal app that lets you keep all your notes in a beautiful and elegant interface.

I was using a very simple app called TNotes. they are now gone. I need the same functionality. SIMPLE, but with export capabilities and no subscription price.

Another app is ‘Memriez Automatic Journal’ that connects with social media, movies, tv, music, books, calendar, health, location.

I have tried ‘Jiff Journal’ app and it is great for my needs. Apart from logging my entries instantly, I can access them through search, calendar and feelings (the app uses AI to detect user’s feeling through each entry). It’s secure as the data is saved in my private iCloud account. Multi device sync: iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Apple Journal is nice, but it's no Journey or Day One alternative yet

Apple’s announcement earlier this year that it was foraying into the journaling app ecosystem was not entirely surprising; mental health and wellness are increasingly central to the company’s software decisions. The introduction of Mindfulness capture in Watch OS 10 and iOS 17 is just one way Apple hopes you’ll begin logging your mental wellbeing. Coupled with all the health data, it is possible to draw a correlation between, say, an elevated heart rate and mental stress levels. However, as someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression most of my life, I can confirm that capturing your current state of mind is only one part of the equation.

Journaling is an immensely personal act that lets you pour out your exact mental state — positive or negative, onto paper. It’s no replacement for a therapist, but daily journaling is a highly effective way to relieve mental burden. While I’ve maintained a physical journal most of my teenage life, I switched to digital journaling a decade back when I picked up the Journey app for my Android phone . I’m also well aware of the extremely popular Day One journaling app.

But as someone who prefers first-party, deeply integrated solutions, I’ve been curious about Apple’s take on journaling. The feature still hasn’t had a widespread rollout yet, but I’ve been testing out Apple’s new Journal app on the iOS 17.2 beta, and I believe it’s a good gateway to maintaining a digital trail of your life’s moments, feelings, and emotions, while balancing feature overload. However, it could do with a few improvements to compete with Journey or Day One.

The perfect gateway to journaling.

The Journal App on the iPhone takes an interesting two-pronged approach towards maintaining a digital diary — even though it doesn’t make it immediately apparent. Opening the app takes you through a set of prompts to get you started with the act of journaling. Apple calls them “reflections,” and to me, they came as a bit obtuse and not necessarily helpful. But more on that later. The entire user journey is straightforward in typical Apple fashion. Tapping the plus button along the bottom of the app pops open a fresh section with more of those suggestions and the option to start a new entry.

A new entry is a blank page to start writing on. You can add images, videos, an audio recording, a location, and even take a photo directly through the app. This can be handy when marking a specific location or incident that impacted you. For particularly noteworthy entries, it is possible to add a bookmark and return to the entry through a dedicated bookmarks toggle on the main page.

Apple talked about using on-device AI to come up with prompts that help users get started with journaling when it introduced the app. In my experience, this has been less than helpful so far. The “reflections” have varied from questions about music that helps me calm down to what nice thing someone has done for me recently. Don’t get me wrong, these can be interesting, reflective moments to look back on. But there was nothing personal about the suggestions. Perhaps the on-device machine learning models need more time to pick up on my habits, but it doesn’t make an excellent first impression.

The app is supposed to pick up recent music listening habits or workouts for suggestions, but I haven’t been presented with such prompts yet. Regardless, I went in expecting more of a template or even ChatGPT -style suggestions on filing my journal entry for the day. Apple’s current implementation comes across more as a gratitude journal than a tool to help me journal better.

A little too barebones

And that brings me to my other gripe with the journal app — it’s remarkably barebones. Outside of the aforementioned functions, there’s precious little to look at here. Moreover, the feature set pales compared to my go-to journaling app — Journey. In fact, the app won’t even let you log your current mood while writing up your daily entry. I haven’t had much experience with Day One, one of the best apps for iPhones , but looking at the feature set, it’s clear to me that it also vastly supersedes what Apple offers.

I didn’t expect Apple to go after dedicated journaling apps, but missing basics like the ability to scroll through your timeline by date is egregious. I’ve often used Journey to log my thoughts about a place I’m visiting and stamp the entry with a GPS location market. The app lets me look at a map view and dive straight into a country or city to look up entries from that place. Apple’s Journal app has no such option.

I also expected to find the ability to look at throwback posts. That feature is commonly available in almost all journaling apps and lets you look back at random entries from the past. I find it’s an effective tool to reflect and relive a specific moment in time. Once again, this isn’t available in Apple’s Journal app.

Add to that the lack of basics like, say, templates or even a widget for quick entries, and it’s pretty evident that Apple isn’t positioning Journal as a comprehensive replacement for apps like Day One or Journey. Apple could also show its strength in on-device machine learning and its broader ecosystem by correlating health metrics and journal entries. Deeply embedding links between, say, a music track that I’m listening to and a journal entry would also be excellent additions. However, none of that is available at launch.

I was also left scratching my head over the lack of iPad or Mac support for the Journal app. You heard that right: Apple’s only product that could let you pencil in entries does not have access to the app. It’s very typical of Apple to not follow through on the obvious. I’m still waiting for that calculator app on my iPad, but I’m hoping that sooner or later, the Journal app will make its way to the tablet — it’s an obvious fit for longer writing sessions. While my iPhone 15 Pro Max is large enough, I still wouldn’t want to use it for marathon writing sessions.

Overall, the Journal app might be one of those instances where Apple hyped up the feature a bit more than it delivered. It’s a functional, handy solution to get started with journaling. However, unless it adds basics like a throwback feature or the ability to go back to diary entries using a calendar interface or maps, it’s just too barebones to be an effective alternative for journaling fiends. It might be an excellent gateway to get people used to journaling, but it needs much more polish before it can be a compelling alternative to long-standing favorites.

The House voted resoundingly on Saturday to approve $95 billion in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as Speaker Mike Johnson put his job on the line to advance the long-stalled aid package by marshaling support from mainstream Republicans and Democrats.

In four back-to-back votes, overwhelming bipartisan coalitions of lawmakers approved fresh rounds of funding for the three U.S. allies, as well as another bill meant to sweeten the deal for conservatives that could result in a nationwide ban of TikTok.

The scene on the House floor reflected both the broad support in Congress for continuing to help the Ukrainian military beat back Russia, and the extraordinary political risk taken by Mr. Johnson to defy the anti-interventionist wing of his party who had sought to thwart the measure. Minutes before the vote on assistance for Kyiv, Democrats began to wave small Ukrainian flags on the House floor, as hard-right Republicans jeered.

How the House Voted on Foreign Aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

Here’s how each member of the House voted on the foreign aid bills.

The legislation includes $60 billion for Kyiv; $26 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. It would direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance, a concept supported by former President Donald J. Trump, who had pushed for any aid to Kyiv to be in the form of a loan. But it also would allow the president to forgive those loans starting in 2026.

It also contained a measure to help pave the way to selling off frozen Russian sovereign assets to help fund the Ukrainian war effort, and a new round of sanctions on Iran. The Senate is expected to pass the legislation as early as Tuesday and send it to President Biden’s desk, capping its tortured journey through Congress.

“Our adversaries are working together to undermine our Western values and demean our democracy,” Representative Michael McCaul, Republican of Texas and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said Saturday as the House debated the measure. “We cannot be afraid at this moment. We have to do what’s right. Evil is on the march. History is calling and now is the time to act.”

“History will judge us by our actions here today,” he continued. “As we deliberate on this vote, you have to ask yourself this question: ‘Am I Chamberlain or Churchill?’”

The vote was 311 to 112 in favor of the aid to Ukraine, with a majority of Republicans — 112 — voting against it and one, Representative Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania, voting “present.” The House approved assistance to Israel 366 to 58; and to Taiwan 385 to 34, with Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, voting “present.” The bill to impose sanctions on Iran and require the sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner or ban the app in the United States passed 360 to 58.

“Today, members of both parties in the House voted to advance our national security interests and send a clear message about the power of American leadership on the world stage,” Mr. Biden said. “At this critical inflection point, they came together to answer history’s call, passing urgently needed national security legislation that I have fought for months to secure.”

Minutes after the vote, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine thanked lawmakers, singling out Mr. Johnson by name “for the decision that keeps history on the right track.”

“Democracy and freedom will always have global significance and will never fail as long as America helps to protect it,” he wrote on social media. “The vital U.S. aid bill passed today by the House will keep the war from expanding, save thousands and thousands of lives, and help both of our nations to become stronger.”

Outside the Capitol, a jubilant crowd waved Ukrainian flags and chanted, “Thank you U.S.A.” as exiting lawmakers gave them a thumbs-up and waved smaller flags of their own.

For months, it had been uncertain whether Congress would approve new funding for Ukraine, even as momentum shifted in Moscow’s favor. That prompted a wave of anxiety in Kyiv and in Europe that the United States, the single biggest provider of military aid to Ukraine, would turn its back on the young democracy.

And it raised questions about whether the political turmoil that has roiled the United States had effectively destroyed what has long been a strong bipartisan consensus in favor of projecting American values around the world. The last time the Congress approved a major tranche of funding to Ukraine was in 2022, before Republicans took control of the House.

With an “America First” sentiment gripping the party’s voter base, led by Mr. Trump, Republicans dug in last year against another aid package for Kyiv, saying the matter should not even be considered unless Mr. Biden agreed to stringent anti-immigration measures. When Senate Democrats agreed earlier this year to legislation that paired the aid with stiffer border enforcement provisions, Mr. Trump denounced it and Republicans rejected it out of hand.

But after the Senate passed its own $95 billion emergency aid legislation for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan without any immigration measures, Mr. Johnson began — first privately, then loudly — telling allies that he would ensure the U.S. would send aid to Kyiv.

In the end, even in the face of an ouster threat from ultraconservative members, he circumvented the hard-line contingent of lawmakers that once was his political home and relied on Democrats to push the measure through. It was a remarkable turnabout for a right-wing lawmaker who voted repeatedly against aid to Ukraine as a rank-and-file member, and as recently as a couple of months ago declared he would never allow the matter to come to a vote until his party’s border demands were met.

In the days leading up to the vote, Mr. Johnson began forcefully making the case that it was Congress’s role to help Ukraine fend off the advances of an authoritarian. Warning that Russian forces could march through the Baltics and Poland if Ukraine falls, Mr. Johnson said he had made the decision to advance aid to Kyiv because he “would rather send bullets to Ukraine than American boys.”

“I think this is an important moment and important opportunity to make that decision,” Mr. Johnson told reporters at the Capitol after the votes. “I think we did our work here and I think history will judge it well.”

Mr. Johnson structured the measures, which were sent to the Senate as one bill, to capture different coalitions of support without allowing opposition to any one element to defeat the whole thing.

“I’m going to allow an opportunity for every single member of the House to vote their conscience and their will,” he had said.

In a nod to right-wing demands, Mr. Johnson allowed a vote just before the foreign aid bills on a stringent border enforcement measure, but it was defeated after failing to reach the two-thirds majority needed for passage. And the speaker refused to link the immigration bill to the foreign aid package, knowing that would effectively kill the spending plan.

His decision to advance the package infuriated the ultraconservatives in his conference who accused Mr. Johnson of reneging on his promise not to allow a vote on foreign aid without first securing sweeping policy concessions on the southern border. It prompted two Republicans, Representatives Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Paul Gosar of Arizona to join a bid by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia to oust Mr. Johnson from the top job.

Ms. Greene claimed the Ukraine aid bill supported “a business model built on blood and murder and war in foreign countries.”

“We should be funding to build up our weapons and ammunition, not to send it over to foreign countries,” she said before her proposal to zero out the money for Kyiv failed on a vote of 351 to 71.

Much of the funding for Ukraine is earmarked to replenish U.S. stockpiles after shipping supplies to Kyiv.

Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, Congress has appropriated $113 billion in funding to support Ukraine’s war effort. $75 billion was directly allocated to the country for humanitarian, financial and military support, and another $38 billion in security assistance-related funding was spent largely in the United States, according to the Institute for Study of War , a Washington-based research group.

Hard-right Republican opposition to the legislation — both on the House floor and in the critical Rules panel — forced Mr. Johnson to rely on Democrats to push the legislation across the finish line.

“If Ukraine does not receive this support that it requires to defeat Russia’s outrageous assault on its sovereign territory, the legacy of this Congress will be the appeasement of a dictator, the destruction of an allied nation and a fractured Europe,” said Representative Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee. “Gone will be our credibility, in the eyes of our allies and of our adversaries. And gone will be the America that promised to stand up for freedom, democracy, and human rights, wherever they are threatened or wherever they are under attack.”

Thirty-seven liberal Democrats opposed the $26 billion aid package for Israel because the legislation placed no conditions on how Israel could use American funding, as the death toll in Gaza has reached more than 33,000 and the threat of famine looms. That showed a notable dent in the longstanding ironclad bipartisan backing for Israel in Congress, but was a relatively small bloc of opposition given that left-wing lawmakers had pressed for a large “no” vote on the bill to send a message to Mr. Biden about the depth of opposition within his political coalition to his backing for Israel’s tactics in the war.

“Sending more weapons to the Netanyahu government will make the U.S. even more responsible for atrocities and the horrific humanitarian crisis in Gaza which is now in a season of famine,” said Representative Jonathan L. Jackson, Democrat of Illinois.

Midjourney has a ton of features baked into it that you won’t find if you don’t know where to look. Many of these features can help you create awesome images, while others are not so useful. So, here are eight Midjourney commands and parameters that I find most productive and fun to use.

Midjourney commands refer to typed commands such as "/imagine" or "/settings" that you type into the message bar to trigger the Midjourney bot. Whereas, parameters refer to examples like "--v6" or "--niji," which you use to provide additional instructions along with your prompt.

1 The Blend Command: Combine Images Together

You might already know that Midjourney lets you create AI images using your own images . Now with the blend command, you can upload 2-5 images to Midjourney and combine the concepts and aesthetics of each image into a new original creation.

To use it, enter “/blend” into the Midjourney bot and upload your images. You can either drag and drop the images from your PC or upload them from your mobile photo library. By default, the blend will take two images as input. But you can add up to 5 by tapping the options field in the prompt window and then choosing "image3", "image4", and "image5."

Now, let’s see this in action. I inserted the following 3 images

And got this blended result:

By default, /blend generates square images with a 1:1 aspect ratio. You can customize this by going into Options > Dimension, in the prompt window and specifying the aspect ratio to Portrait, Square, or Landscape. You can also add suffixes and parameters to your blend command just like with /imagine, to further customize the results.

2 The Describe Command: From Images to Text

You can use the describe command to provide Midjourney with an image and get a prompt as input. So, the reverse of what we generally use it for. Simply type in “/describe” and you’ll be asked to either upload the image or provide a link to the image. Provide your image, and Midjourney will present 4 potential prompts for that image.

You can now use these prompts with the /imagine command to see what Midjourney cooks up. Or you can just use this to expand your artistic vocabulary. That said, one of the best use cases of this command is to reverse engineer AI images you see online and on social media and try to recreate them using Midjourney.

3 The No Parameter: Avoid Certain Elements In Images

Sometimes, when using a prompt, certain elements or items might repeatedly pop up in your image. At this point, you can use the no parameter to remove items or objects you don’t want in your composition.

For instance, this is what Midjourney generates with the following prompt:

summer picnic scene

As you can see, Midjourney is creating images with trees in them. But I don’t want trees. So, if I modify the prompt to:

summer picnic scene without trees

This is what I get:

Still, the generated images include trees. But you can stop this from happening by using the “no” parameter and specifying what you want removed. The modified prompt becomes:

summer picnic scene --no tree, branches, leaves, trunks.

And here’s the generated image:

Yes, trees are still present in the composition, but their presence is significantly reduced.

You can remove multiple items using the “no” parameter, such as: --no item1, item2, item3, item4…

4 The Stylize Parameter: Control Midjourney's Stylization

The 'stylize' parameter has a value between 0-1000 with the default value being 100. You can freely increase or decrease it to create more or less stylistic art by adding "--s 10" or "--stylize 900" (or whatever value you want to specify) at the end of the prompt.

If the Stylize Parameter is close to 10, it will create images that closely adhere to the prompt. However, if you go for a high Stylize parameter like 900, you’ll get an image that tries to look good (stylistic, according to Midjourney's training) even if it has to ignore elements of the given prompt.

Let’s take this prompt for example:

a child’s painting of a house with a car and a pool.

Here’s what you get from Midjourney without using the stylize feature:

Now, with stylize set to 10:

a child’s painting of a house with a car and a pool --s 10

This is the generated image:

And with stylize set to 900:

a child’s painting of a house with a car and a pool --s 900

We get this:

5 The Repeat Parameters: Fast Visual Exploration

Midjourney simultaneously generates 4 images from a single prompt to let you pick your favorite and work with it. However, sometimes 4 generations isn’t enough and you need to see more variations. At this time, you can either keep clicking the "reroll" button over and over again, or use the repeat parameter.

To do so, add "--repeat" (or "--r") at the end of your prompt along with the number of times you want it to repeat. For instance, the following prompt will generate 5 sets of 4 image grids:

two friends sitting at the beach, sunset, --r 5

You can also mix the “repeat” parameter with other options like the “stylize” parameter to speed up your explorations.

Basic users can do 2-4 repeats, Standard users can do 2-10, and Pro/Mega users can go wild with 2-40 repeats. Also, the repeat parameter only works with Fast or Turbo GPU models, not Relax, and will eat up a fair amount of GPU hours very quickly.

6 The Weird Parameter: Make Images Stranger

If you’ve used Midjourney long enough, you’ll soon realize it has a distinct style and aesthetic preference. If you want to force it to move away from the default styling, you can use the "weird" parameter. To do so, append your prompt with "--weird" (or "--w") at the end of your prompt along with a number between 0-3000, with 0 being the default value, meaning no weirdness.

To showcase this feature in action, let’s consider, by default, the Midjourney image you get with the prompt:

a steampunk cyborg

This is exactly how you'd expect Midjourney to create images. Now, let’s set weird to 100:

a steampunk cyborg --w 100

This is with weird raised to 1000:

a steampunk cyborg --2 1000

And finally, this is with weird cranked up to 2500

a steampunk cyborg --w 2500

7 The Video Parameter: Capture the Creation Process

As Midjourney processes your base imagine prompt and generates the final image grid, you get to see a slow evolutionary process of how your image goes from a crude blur to an AI masterpiece (most of the time). If you want to capture this creation process and save it as a GIF or short movie, you can do that using the "video" parameter. Just follow these steps:

Add "--video" at the end of your prompt such as:

watercolor scenery of a mountain in the woods --video

After the job finishes, click "Add Reaction" button and select the "Envelope" Emoji.

The Midjourney bot will send you a direct message with the link to the video. You can open it to view in a browser or right-click (or long press if on mobile) to download it.

8 The Tile Parameter: Craft Stunning Patterns

I often use Midjourney to create monotonous pattern-based wallpapers and this is when the 'tile" parameter comes in real handy. Of course, you can also use this feature to create any seamless repeating patterns, or textures, or even for printing on fabrics. To use the feature, simply prompt Midjourney to create a pattern and append it with the --tile parameter. You will get a grid of patterns that you can individually upscale and use them as repeating patterns to create large images.

Example prompt:

a pattern of autumn leaves --tile

And this is the result:

Ensure to mention "pattern" in the prompt or else the generated image will have absurd cuts and breaks in the image.

You can now use the Seamless Texture Checker to see the tile repeat and download it to your system. Whereas, if you want to use it as wallpaper like I do, follow these steps. On your Windows 11 system, go to Settings > Personalize > Background. Pick "Picture" under the option "Personalize Your Background" and select the image under "Choose A Photo field." Then, select “Tile” under "Choose A Fit for your desktop image," and voilà!
