I have said it before and I will say it again; jumper cables are an essential tool for motorists. They are small, and light, and will keep you from being stranded if your battery dies. These things can be a lifesaver when stuck in remote locations or during extreme weather situations. The right set of jumper cables, paired with a protective case, offers not only convenience but also ensures the cables remain untangled and in good condition for many years.

There are various types of jumper cables available in the market, differing in length, gauge, and quality of materials used . Choosing the right jumper cables depends on factors such as the type of vehicle, the distance between the vehicles during the jump-start, and the environment in which they will be used. A quality jumper cable set should be made of durable materials, have a solid connection to both battery terminals, and provide an adequate amount of power transfer for a successful jump-start.

When purchasing jumper cables with a case, because jumper cables do not come with cars , buyers should pay close attention to the length and gauge of the cables, as well as the type of clamps and overall build quality. Longer cables provide more flexibility in positioning the vehicles, while a lower gauge (thicker) cable ensures efficient power transfer. High-quality clamps should have strong grip and teeth, as well as good conductivity. In addition to these factors, a durable and portable case is crucial for easy storage and transportation.

Having a reliable and effective jumper cable set with a case in your vehicle can be the difference between getting back on the road quickly or waiting hours for assistance. This article will help you navigate the selection process and introduce the best jumper cable sets on the market to ensure a seamless jump-starting experience.

Buying Guide

When looking for jumper cables with a case, there are several important factors to consider. This buying guide will help you choose the best product by outlining key features you should look for, as well as offering some additional considerations to keep in mind.

Cable Length and Thickness

The length and thickness of the cables play a crucial role in their performance. Lengthier cables are more versatile but might be harder to handle. Thickness, measured in gauge, affects both conductivity and durability. A lower gauge number translates to a thicker cable, offering a better flow of electricity. Common gauges are 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Clamp Quality

The clamps on the jumper cables should be sturdy, easy to use, and have strong spring tension. They should feature serrated teeth for better grip and an insulated coating to prevent short circuits.

Amperage Rating

Consult the amperage rating of the cables, which indicates the maximum current they can safely transmit. A higher rating correlates with a faster jump-starting process. This is particularly important if you frequently deal with larger vehicles or those with higher-capacity batteries.

Compatibility

Ensure that the jumper cables you choose are compatible with your specific vehicle in terms of the battery voltage and connection type. Some cables also come with a reverse polarity warning feature, which alerts you if the clamps are connected improperly.

Case Quality

A robust and portable case is essential for storage and transport. Look for a case that is easy to carry, protects your cables from damage, and allows organized storage for hassle-free access when required.

Final Thoughts…

In conclusion, having a reliable set of jumper cables with a case is essential for any driver. When choosing the best option, consider factors such as cable length and thickness, clamp quality, amperage rating, compatibility, and case quality.

Among the top picks, the Goodyear Heavy Duty 4 Gauge Booster Cables with Case stand out as the best overall choice. These cables offer a durable and reliable solution for jump-starting any vehicle type, with extra-long 16-foot cables and a sturdy carrying case for easy storage and transport. Jumper Cables vs. Jump Starters

Jumper cables are more basic without any fancy features. It often comes down to personal preference and what type of vehicle you drive. With these pros and cons in mind, we have included two jump starters on our list that are worth considering as well.

As lithium-ion battery technology gets better and better, you might think jumper cables are becoming obsolete. Not necessarily. Jumper cables can come in handy where a dead jump starter would not, so it's not a bad idea to keep a set in your roadside emergency kit.

Things to consider when shopping for jumper cables.

Cable gauge: Jumper cables come in different gauges. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire and the more amperage the jumper cables can handle. In general, you'll want either 4- or 6-gauge jumper cables for a standard vehicle.

You can get away with higher-gauge jumper cables if you drive a small car, but for full-size trucks, vans, and other large vehicles, you'll want a set of 1- or 2-gauge jumper cables. Thicker jumper cables take up more space in the trunk, though, so it's important to find the right balance between your needs and practicality.

Length: Longer cables allow you to reach between batteries much easier. Since vehicles commonly locate their batteries in trunks these days, it's smart to be ready for a lengthy distance between vehicles. On the flip side, longer cables are more difficult to store if you're short on space.

Clamp quality: You'll want to choose a set of jumper cables with clamp quality in mind because that's where the main connection begins. This is your vehicle's direct lifeline, so you want it to be secure. Good cables are also ergonomically simple to squeeze—which can be super handy in the bitter cold.

Storage: Storing your jumper cables properly can save you space in your trunk, glovebox, or under your seat. Check to see which jumper cables come with handy storage containers—who doesn't like more space in their ride?

How We Tested Jumper Cables

For our jumper-cable test, we wanted to look at all aspects, not just if they work. We tested the following parameters:

  • Stated Cable Gauge
  • Storage options
  • Clamp Quality
  • Included Accessories

Comparing notes on each of these parameters, we decided which jumper cables worked best for different situations and which ones fell short. Here are our picks for the best jumper cables .

Cartman jumper cables are our pick as the Best for Most Vehicles thanks to the excellent warranty, clamp quality, and included accessories. You'll get a battery terminal cleaning brush along with a nice carrier bag to help you store these cables in your trunk or under your seat.

At 20.0-feet in length, they boast enough reach for just about any jumping situation. We judged the quality of the clamps and cables to be quite good, and that three-year warranty is a home run. For most vehicles, these are our pick for the best jumper cables.

Coming in at a close second, the EverStart jumper cables are an excellent choice in their own right. They feature a nifty Smart Protector readout device that displays voltage and alerts if it detects reverse polarity. It's a nice backup to have, just in case.

The EverStart cables are rated 6-gauge and extend 15.9-feet. The two-year warranty is nice, and they come with a dedicated carrier bag. If they were a bit longer, they'd contend for our pick for the best—but we'll give them a close second.

Coming in at 25.2 feet in length, TopDC jumper cables are quite a beast. They're a bit heavy, too, weighing in at six pounds—the heaviest cables we tested.

The 4-gauge cables boast a whopping five-year warranty, which is impressive. The circular carrier case is nice for storage, but the length of these cables makes it a challenge to tuck them away. If you need long cables, get these—but make sure you have room to stow them in your ride.

Energizer jumper cables are a nice middle ground—not excelling in any of our testing parameters but not producing any true negative feedback, either.

The zip-up carrier bag is a nice touch, but we felt the clamps were a bit difficult to handle. But with a solid warranty, these aren't a bad buy if the need arises.

Right out of the box, the DieHard jumper cables lacked a carrier case—which puts it at a disadvantage. We also couldn't get a definitive warranty length with these, so keep that in mind.

Aside from the helpful 20.0-foot length, we felt the clamps were difficult to squeeze, and the contacts in the jaws lacked a lot of surface area compared to others.

These 10-gauge jumper cables from Amazon Basics are a bit on the thin side for most vehicles, but if you have a small car with a low-power battery, you might be able to make these work. But why risk it when you can just get a larger-gauge set of cables for a similar price?

Additionally, the contacts on the clamps are small, and gripping the terminals could prove to be a challenge in a cramped engine bay. Along with a short length, we felt like these just missed the mark.

best jumper cables tested laid out between two cars

We tested a wide range of jumper cables varying in both gauge and length. We wanted to analyze all aspects of the cables, not just if they work. Length is an important parameter, so we verified that by measuring from clamp end to clamp end. Our measurements were overall quite close to the lengths stated by the manufacturers, only varying by an inch or two.

We measured the weight of each set of cables and took note of any included accessories . Because storing these cables is worth consideration, we kept track of any bags or cases that offered handy storage options .

We subjectively tested the clamp quality of each set of cables, judging how they felt to use, if they were easy to squeeze, and grabbed onto battery terminals adequately. And finally, we verified the warranty offerings for each set of jumper cables.

Once we accumulated all this data, we gathered our findings for the best jumper cables .

How do I jump my car?

  • Find a donor car with a fully charged battery. This will be the charged vehicle. Position the charged vehicle close to the discharged vehicle's battery. Vehicles can have their batteries located under the hood, in the trunk, or even inside a wheel well. Find the battery locations and position each vehicle accordingly.
  • Make sure both vehicles are "key-off" and in park.
  • Access both batteries, identifying the Positive (usually red or marked with a "+") and Negative (usually black or marked with a "-") terminals. In some cases, a post or ground bolt is labeled to attach the Negative cable is located in the engine bay.
  • Get your jumper cables ready for connection. - Connect a red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery. - Connect the opposite red clamp to the positive terminal of the charged battery. - Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal of the charged battery. - Connect the opposite black clamp to a piece of unpainted metal, like a bracket or labeled ground bolt used for this situation. Note: Do NOT connect the opposite black clamp to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This can cause sparks, and if the battery is leaking hydrogen gas, this can lead to a gnarly fire.
  • Double-check your connections are secure and away from any moving components under the hood.
  • Start the charged vehicle's engine. You may need to wait a few minutes until the discharged battery can recharge enough.
  • Try starting the discharged vehicle.
  • If the discharged vehicle starts, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order you put them on.
  • Run the discharged vehicle for 20 minutes or so. Get to where you need to be, and then get the dead battery issue diagnosed so it doesn't happen again.
  • Congrats, you're saved!

What gauge jumper cable do I need?

Jumper cable gauges range from one to 12, and the lower the number, the more power the cable can handle. For a standard vehicle, 4- to 6-gauge cables are fine, while larger vehicles like diesel trucks might want something closer to 2-gauge cables. Eight- to 10-gauge cables should work for smaller vehicles.

Why would I buy jumper cables when I can just buy a portable jump starter?

The short answer? Jumper cables are cheaper, and you don't need to worry about keeping them charged up. Portable jump-starter technology keeps improving, and having one is a solid alternative. But if you want to stick with ol' reliable, a set of good jumper cables won't let you down.

Best Jumper Cables for 2022

Stranded? No need to worry -- these jumper cables will get your vehicle up and running again.

As just about every driver knows, a dead car battery can be a huge headache. Whether you're in a rush to get somewhere or you're just trying to make your way back home, you won't be going anywhere until a good Samaritan stops by to give your car a jump. Waiting around for a someone to give you a hand is stressful enough, but add in appointments or inclement weather and it can ruin your whole day.

If you carry a pair of car jumper cables (booster cables) or a portable jump starter with you, though, you can get things going a whole lot quicker. Just use the jumper cable set to hook your battery up to another one, and you can jump-start your car. A good set of emergency cables will give you enough juice to get running and back home, although you'll still need to have your car battery checked over. Even so, having a set of the best jumper cables on-hand and ready to go in your trunk or boot definitely beats waiting for a tow truck.

There are a whole host of jumper cables and jump starters out there, with different capabilities (and price points). Determining which is the best jumper cable set for you means evaluating your circumstances and needs, and then going from there. For your convenience, we've compiled a list of some of the best jumper cables or emergency cables across a wide variety of categories, selected based on customer satisfaction and expert opinion.

After our picks for the best jumper cables, read on for more information about booster cable sets -- including the proper way to use them to jump-start your car.

Energizer Jumper Cables

Best jumper cables overall runner-up/best heavy-duty jumper cables.

While Energizer's Jumper Cables may rank as our runner-up heavy duty jumper cable set, they're really just as good as the Cartman models. Like Cartman, they have 4.8 stars out of 5 on Amazon, based on more than 13,000 customer ratings. They also edge out Cartman Booster Cables in the sales category, ranking as the most popular jumper cables on the site.

The Energizer jumper cable set is highly ranked for their capabilities, and they come at a reasonable price, as well -- the 16-foot cable length/2-gauge cables are only $30, while the most deluxe, heavy duty cable model to move more serious amperage (25 feet/1-gauge) comes in at just $52. Combined with a two-year warranty, that means that Energizer's cables are a smart investment.

Energizer's Jumper Cables also rank as our top pick in the heavy-duty category -- while the company offers a 6-gauge model, most of the varieties range in wire gauge from 1-gauge to 4-gauge. This gauge jumper cable can handle higher amperage, greater than 400 amps, delivering a burst of power that can jump-start trucks and SUVs in addition to cars.

How do you use jumper cables?

Using jumper cables to start a car is very dangerous (and potentially harmful) if you don't follow the proper instructions. Not only does the process involve dealing with high voltages of electricity, but damaged batteries can also leak hazardous substances. Make sure to always use jumper cables safely, and remember -- manufacturer's instructions always supersede any others.

You can jump-start a car if the battery is dead -- typically, you'll know the battery is dead because the car makes a low whining noise when you try to start it, but there are other signs, as well. "The first clue would be that the vehicle won't start. It could lead to no lights appearing on the dashboard and, potentially, there may even be a clicking sound coming from the engine bay," says Lee Silsby. Silsby is a tester for the UK's Ministry of Transport and the founder of Earningsportal. "You could also note the battery is dead if you go to remote unlock the vehicle and this doesn't work."

To jump-start a car, you need jumper cables and an additional battery with a matching voltage or a jump starter. Usually, the battery will be in another car, but there are also portable jump starters that can give you an automatic car the boost it needs to get going. If you are using another car, you must first make sure that both cars are parked in an orientation that allows the jumper cables to reach from one battery to the other.

Hands holding the ends of a jumper cable.

Jumper cables -- such as this Energizer model -- come with color-coded red and black clips.

After that, it's a matter of following specific instructions . Make sure the cars are both not running, then pop the hoods. Connect one of the cables' red clips to the positive terminal on the dead battery, then the other red clip to the positive terminal on the donor battery. Then, you attach one of the cables' black clips to the donor battery's negative terminal. Finally, you connect the remaining black clip to an unpainted metal section of the dead car, one that's not directly next to the battery -- idrivesafely.com recommends one of the metal struts that hold the hood open. Incorrect connections can result in power drainages, sparks or even explosions, which can damage your vehicle and injure you.

"If you connect the negative (ground) terminal first, any accidental metal to metal contact on the way to connecting the positive (hot) terminal will result in a short circuit with the entire capacity of the battery behind it," says Mike Arman. Arman is an electronics expert, a vocational school teacher, and the author of Motorcycle Electrics Without Pain. "The accidental metal to metal contact completes the circuit. While nobody intends to do this, clamps can slip out of your hand, you might have to reposition the cars because the cables are too short, or you might be wearing a metal ring which completes the circuit (it will melt and you may lose the finger). Connecting the positive (hot) terminal first avoids most of this. The circuit is dead until the negative (ground) terminal is connected."

Four different jumper cables

Not all jumper cables are created equal.

Once the clips are attached, you start the donor car and allow it to run for a few minutes. After some time has elapsed, you may be able to start the dead battery. First, you'll want to see if the light in the car works. If it does, you can try starting it. If the car starts, detach the cables in the opposite  order -- first the black clip from the unpainted metal, then the black clip from the battery, then the red clip from the donor battery, and finally, the red clip from the dead battery. It's recommended that you allow the car to run for 10 to 20 minutes before turning it off.

"Leave the vehicle running for a while -- or even better, take it for a long drive to charge up the battery," says Silsby. "It would also be worthwhile checking the battery as it may need replacing. If you find it goes dead again very quickly then this is possibly the case.

If the car doesn't start, you can check the connections and try again, though it's possible the battery is too far gone to be jumped.

Jumper cables clamped on a car battery

As shown here with the Horusdy jumper cables, red clips are always connected to positive terminals and black clips to the negative terminals.

More about jumper cables

Jumper cables, also sometimes called "booster cables," come in many different varieties, so you'll want to make sure you pick the pair that's right for you. One way in which jumper cables differ is in the gauge, or thickness, of the wire. The lower the gauge, the thicker the wire is , ranging from 1-gauge to 12-gauge. Thicker -- or heavy-duty -- wires allow more electricity to pass through, so if you have a larger battery that needs more juice to start, you'll probably want a pair of cables with a lower gauge.

It's also important to make sure that your cables have good clamps. Each pair of cables comes with one cable with red clamps on each end, and one cable with black clamps (alligator clamps or parrot clamps) that connect to the cables and grip car batteries' terminals, making them an essential part of conducting electricity. For that reason, clamps should be securely attached and insulated in order to prevent electrocution and injury.

With Energizer's 30-foot jumper cables, you have your choice of parking configurations while getting a jump.

Five things to know before using jumper cables

  • What is your budget? The amount of money that you have to spend on jumper cables will be an important factor in determining which ones you get. Luckily, there are great models at a wide array of prices, offering different benefits.
  • What voltage is your battery? No matter what voltage your car battery is, you'll need to get jumper cables that are compatible. If they're not compatible with your battery's voltage, you won't be able to use them to jump-start your car.
  • What length do you need? The length of the cables that you get will be determined by the conditions under which you use them. For instance, if you live in a busy area where parking is sparse, you may want longer cables to allow for more distance between cars.
  • What gauge do you need? The gauge of your cables references their thickness, and thicker cables transmit more power. If you have a larger vehicle with a larger battery, you'll want a lower gauge, which means the cables are thicker.
  • How do you operate the jumper cables safely? In addition to the instructions given in this article, make sure you read the manufacturer's instructions thoroughly and follow them fully in order to ensure safe use.

Jumper cables were a big deal when I was growing up. I spent a lot of my childhood and young adult years at the drive-in movie theater. (In fact, the Sunset Drive-In in San Luis Obispo, Calif., is still open—owned and operated by the same family since 1950.) At the end of every double feature, there was at least one guy stumbling across the parking lot asking for a jump—he probably forgot to use the ignition’s accessory position. Jump starts were such a common occurrence, they should’ve sold jumper cables in the snack bar.

Jumper cables, also called jump leads or booster cables, have a singular focus. They are meant to transfer power from one vehicle to another — or from an energy source of the same voltage — when a battery has lost charge to the point it cannot start the vehicle’s engine. The thing about jumper cables and all of your automotive emergency gear is that you don’t need them until you really need them. And unless you’ve got a manual-transmission car that can be started with a good push, you’re really going to need some jumper cables.

Listed here are my top choices for your jump-starting pleasure, whether it’s for an abandoned car in your driveway or just in case you leave the radio on for two full-length Lord of the Rings sagas.

Summary List

Best overall: topdc copper jumper cables, best value: kriëger jumper cables, premium pick: xincol heavy-duty booster cables, best lightweight: energizer heavy-duty jumper cables, for hard-to-reach batteries: diehard booster cables, honorable mention: everstart booster cables, our methodology.

These jumper cables were selected using the same rubric I’d use in choosing the right set for a family member’s car. (I have a very large family, and everyone who drives must have a full set of emergency equipment in their vehicle, so says the bossy oldest sister, who’s also a mechanic.)

The jumper cables must be safe and easy to use. Cable material and insulation should be of a high grade while also being affordable. Pure copper wire is the best choice for conductivity and safety, followed by copper-clad aluminum (CCA) and copper-clad steel (CCS). The length and thickness are important, since flexibility and weight are a concern, and the alligator clamps that will attach to the batteries should grip tightly while being easy to use and well insulated.

The cables should include a carrying case for secure storage, and a long warranty is preferable. Our methodology for selection is explained further on The Drive’s Gear About page .

Best Jumper Cables: Reviews & Recommendations

Heat resistant

The best conductor of electricity when it comes to jumper cables is copper wire. This TopDC selection is made of 100 percent copper wire, instead of the more common copper-clad aluminum, so it is more resistant to heat, is more flexible, and needs less insulation on a thinner gauge, so it weighs less. This 4-gauge set is made for regular passenger cars and is rated to work in very high and very low temperatures—minus 40 to 167 degrees Fahrenheit—and comes with a step-by-step guide to jump-starting a car.

Our choice is the 20-foot length, which makes it possible to jump a car from one parked directly behind it. The clamps seem to be sufficient, although I would prefer them to be better insulated, and it is on the pricier side, although not unreasonably so. What makes these an even better choice is that they come with a storage bag and safety gloves.

Great value

Price is a factor when considering gear for your car, and jumper cables are no exception. From Kriëger comes a set in several lengths and gauges. Lengths to choose from as a value option include 16, 20, and 25 feet. The thicker the gauge, the lower the number, and these come in 1, 2, and 4 gauge. There’s also a 2-gauge pure-copper set available that is 30 feet long, but it comes with a triple-digit price tag.

The 16-foot length we chose may not be ideal for all situations, but it allows for some maneuverability when getting a jump-start, and it’s the least expensive. The clamps are the star, with comfortable grips that are well insulated with thick plastic. They’re also coated with vinyl to resist corrosion, but the springs on them are said to be a little too weak by customers. These cables also come with an attractive storage bag and a two-year warranty.

Cables are separate

Heavier than others

Xincol has been manufacturing electronics for more than 15 years, and its jumper cables made of pure copper wire are an excellent option in this market. They come in a variety of lengths, 10-, 13, 16-, and 20-feet long, and they are rated to withstand the most extreme outdoor temperatures. The 1-gauge cables are not fused together as they are with most of the choices, so the wires are more flexible and easier to roll up and store. Still, the thickest gauge available means that this set can be used on all cars, trucks, and SUVs without the worry of a meltdown.

These jumper cables have thick insulation and, of course, the best electrical conductivity since they’re made of copper and not just copper-clad wires. It’s on the pricier side, but it’s a bargain for pure copper cables.

Minimal clamp insulation

Pricier than some options

Just like the U.S. Postal Service, Energizer says its jumper cables will deliver in rain, sleet, and dead of night—as well as windstorms and searing desert heat. The set is rated to withstand extreme temperatures, the copper-clad aluminum wires should remain flexible at sub-zero temperatures, even if your joints can’t. It’s hard to believe that a 25-foot long set of copper-clad aluminum jumper cables could only weigh two pounds while a 16-foot length weighs three times that much, but reviewer statements bear that out. Even a small child could probably hoist these cables and run them over to an adult on jump-start duty.

These cables come in lengths of 16, 20, and 25 feet, but all of them except the longest are 4 gauge. The longest set is 1 gauge, so it can be used on cars, trucks, and SUVs. Although the clamps have a vinyl coating on all parts your hands should touch, there is the possibility that the coating could wear at the joints and leave bare, conductive metal right where you’d hold them. The price is on the higher side for CCA cables, but the set has a two-year warranty, which bodes well for its durability. It comes with a handy storage bag as well, emblazoned with the Energizer name.

Clamps have minimal insulation

No storage bag

DieHard’s jumper-cable offering made of copper-clad aluminum wire comes in only one length, but it’s 20 feet long, which leaves some length to maneuver if the vehicles aren’t able to meet face to face. The cables have a tough PVC outer insulation, and DieHard claims that the cables are resistant to tangling. They’re also flexible and connected to each other, which makes them easier to pack away and more difficult to lose.

These cables are 2 gauge, so the wires are thick enough to jump-start heavy-duty trucks as well as cars and SUVs. The clamps leave something to be desired as the insulation is minimal, although the clamps are made of aluminum and the actual alligator teeth are CCA. Unfortunately, this set does not come with a storage case or bag.

Copper-clad aluminum

Pricey for CCA

Who doesn’t like a plastic molded case? I love them for safe storage that’s dedicated strictly to its product. No wondering what’s in the box a la Brad Pitt in Seven ; it comes labeled with the exact contents. This case is specifically for EverStart’s 2-gauge copper-clad aluminum jumper cables, which are designated for heavy-duty vehicles as well as cars and SUVs. The cables are 20 feet long, and that’s enough to connect most passenger cars in a variety of positions, even if the donor car is parked directly behind the dead car.

EverStart claims the cables are good for use down to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and it touts a tangle-free design. The clamps have a vinyl coating, which is less than desired insulation, but it’s sufficient. Best of all, it comes to you inside a handsome carrying case just right for tucking away for a rainy day—or at least one in which you need a jump.

Our Verdict on the Best Jumper Cables

Our top choice in the world of jumper cables is the set by TopDC , found on Amazon. Finding a set of pure copper cables for that price is unheard of. Get the thickest gauge of copper wires you can afford, especially if you drive an SUV or a truck. Heavy-duty cables allow more electricity to pass through the insulated wires, making it easier to ensure a charge even in adverse weather conditions.

What to Consider When Buying Jumper Cables

Types of jumper cables, pure copper.

Quality jumper cables are made with 100 percent copper wire. Although they’re more expensive, copper cables are more flexible, have a higher melting point, and are more durable than any other type. Pure copper cables have the lowest resistance and the highest electrical conductivity, which means you can use thinner gauge cables for the same job than other types require. In other words, you’ll save space in your trunk because your cables are smaller.

Copper-Clad Aluminum

Copper-clad aluminum, or CCA, is the most prevalent type of jumper cables on the market. Like it says on the tin, these wires are made of aluminum with a thin copper coating. They are less expensive than pure copper, but the difference in conductivity means the cables need to be of a thicker gauge and have thicker, more extensive sheathing and insulation, which will make them bigger and heavier and storing them will be a more difficult task.

Copper-Clad Steel

Copper-clad steel, or CCS, is tougher than aluminum or copper wire, but it’s also less flexible and heavier. It’s also a lot less conductive than pure copper or CCA. Steel and aluminum wire has a higher resistance as well, meaning it is more susceptible to overheating and fire danger. Although CCS cables are less expensive, they are also prone to failure at the point of connection with the clamps, which can be dangerous for the vehicles and the users.

Jumper Cables Key Features

Cable material.

When shopping for jumper cables, the actual wire used is important. As mentioned above, the best grade of jumper cables are those with pure copper wire, since they are the most durable and flexible, and they conduct electricity best out of all the types. However, they are also the most expensive option.

Cable Thickness

The thickness of the cables is crucial to electricity delivery. The thicker the cable, the easier it is for electricity to flow from one battery to the other. The thickness of the cable is measured by gauge. A lower gauge number means a thicker cable. So, a four- to six-gauge is good for most passenger cars, and a one- or two-gauge is better for trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles. The drawback with a thicker gauge is that it makes the cables less flexible and more difficult to store.

Cable Insulation

You have two types of insulation wrapped around each jumper cable. There’s an outer sheath that keeps the wires safe from oil and chemicals as well as safeguarding against fire or shock. Inside of that is a sheath of protection from electrical leakage that also preserves the wire’s integrity. The rubber or rubberized plastic insulation should be tough while remaining flexible, even in colder temperatures.

Cable Length

The length of your jumper cables is something that won’t seem like a problem until you need to use them. Ten feet seems like it would be long enough to span the distance between two vehicles, but it’s not always possible to get that close. Longer jumper cables that are 20 or 25 feet long make it easier to connect in more situations. With cables this long, in most cases you’ll be able to. There are 100-feet-long jumper cables, but if you’re that far away from another roadgoing vehicle, you might have other issues.

Clamp Quality

Alligator clips are the best at handling clamp duty. It’s important that the clamps are strong and hold on tightly. Last thing you want is to have a clamp shake loose while charging. There are as many types of alligator clamps as there are manufacturers of jumper cables. Finding ones that fit your hand well, have easy action, and come with well-insulated grips will make the task of jump-starting simpler and safer.

Setting up your vehicle with emergency equipment is part of being a responsible driver, and jumper cables certainly should be part of that kit. You’ll want to keep your jumper cables secure and safe while tucked away. Having a bag or a molded plastic case to keep them in will come in handy and be easier to access until you need them. Look for jumper cables that include some type of storage system.

What good is a product if the company won’t stand behind it? A good indicator of how long a set of jumper cables might last is the length of the warranty. Five years, as with the Krieger cables, is a great guarantee; 30 days for the DieHard set (and only protecting against manufacturer defects) ain’t so good.

Jumper Cables Pricing

The cost of a set of jumper cables can run anywhere from $15 for flimsy, eight-gauge wires at the roadside truck stop all the way up to $200 for a pure-copper, 30-foot pair. You’ll most likely find a good set for $25 to $60, as evidenced by our suggestions here. The best thing about jumper cables is that if you care for them they can last a long time, especially because you probably won’t use them very often.

You’ve got questions. The Drive has answers.

Q: Are all car batteries the same voltage?

A: Yes, pretty much. The standard automotive battery for passenger cars is 12 volts, so jump-starting a car, truck, or SUV with the help of another is possible. Not all batteries are the same size, however, so make sure to consult the owner’s manual when it comes time to replace your vehicle’s power source.

Q: Will I be able to use any type of cables on my side-post battery?

A: No, a side-post battery has one or both of the positive and negative terminals located on the side of the battery. In this case, you’ll need a set of jumper cables with longer clamps that can actually reach the posts on your battery. There aren’t many car manufacturers who shoehorn in side-terminal batteries (looking at you, General Motors), but check under your hood or in the owner’s manual to see what you have.

Q: Is there another way to jump-start a vehicle other than with jumper cables?

A: If you’re lucky enough to have a manual-transmission car, there is the option of push-starting or bump-starting it . Otherwise, you can use a jump box, which is basically a portable battery with jumper cables attached. Or you can always call roadside assistance. You have AAA , right?

Q: Can I jump-start my electric vehicle?

A: Besides running its motors using lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles have a 12-volt car battery that powers the electrical system and accessories, such as power door locks. This 12-volt battery can be charged with the help of a running gas-fueled car. The 12-volt battery in an EV, however, cannot be used to jump the battery of any other vehicle. Also, the lithium-ion batteries are high voltage and cannot be charged with jumper cables. Do not attempt!
