River Rafting on the Kern River

Kern River Rafting Trips

Forks of the kern, lickety split, other rivers, guide school, lower kern river.

Located in Sequoia National Forest, an easy three hour drive from Los Angeles, the lovely Lower Kern hides in its own special wilderness, a winding canyon overhung with willows, sycamore, and pine. Our One Day Class III and IV "Bigwater", Two Day "Sierra Escape", One Day/Overnight "Jungle Run and Camp Fun", and ever popular 1/2 Day Lower Kern trips are perfect for families, first-timers and experienced rafters alike.

The Lower Kern River is home to our Signature "Sierra Escape". This overnight trip has been the most popular trip we've run in California for the past 40 years!

You'll run a 20+ mile stretch of the scenic Lower Kern River over the course of the two days. The trip begins immediately downstream of Lake Isabella, runs through a granite gorge, and opens up to reveal a pine, sycamore, and willow lined canyon. Class III rapids pepper the run throughout.

The first day concludes at our private, riverside, Lower Kern Camp. Special attention has been paid to this unique campsite. It comes complete with chairs, redwood sleeping decks, and thick "Paco" style sleeping pads for all of our guests. The trip meets at 11:00am at our Kern Outdoor Center in Kernville. Riverside feasting commences with appetizers shortly after arriving at camp. A sumptuous dinner and tasty dessert round off the evening and breakfast is served the following day. Lunch is provided along the river on the second day of this trip. Our guides are amazing outdoor chefs and will facilitate outstanding meals and a mesmerizing campfire for the group the evening of your overnight. Evenings are spent under a starlit sky the likes of which may surprise and amaze the most ardent outdoor enthusiast.

The second day, you'll run the fabled 12-mile, Class IV, "Bigwater" stretch on the Lower Kern. The river corridor is beautiful, the rapids fabulous, and the water temperature approaching 70 degrees during the summer months. We routinely stop at the popular "Horeshoe Falls Jumping Rock" during the trip where your group can jump into the river and cool off to their heart's content. These trips usually return about 4:00pm the afternoon of the second day. The recommended minimum age for this Two Day trip is nine years, however occasionally we raise the minimum on the Class IV "Bigwater" stretch during brief periods of high water flows.

We also offer super popular Half Day trips on the Class III Jungle Run and One Day trips on the Class IV "Bigwater" stretch.

Another popular and affordable overnight option is our Class III "Jungle Run and Camp Fun" where we run the first day, overnight at our camp, and are returned to the Kern Outdoor Center after breakfast on day two. These trips usually return about 10:30am the morning of the second day.

We can usually accommodate youngsters as young as six years of age on the "Jungle Run" stretch as long as they weigh at least 50lbs, however for a good portion of this year, we'll need to raise the recommended minimum age during this year's early season high-water period.

Please give our office a call at (800) 400-7238 or email us at [email protected] for updates.

This year, we expect to offer these high energy trips from mid-July through August. You'll run fabled rapids such as "Sock 'em Dog", "Squashed Paddler, "Fender Bender" and "The Flume". These trips are not for "first timers" as previous rafting experience is required. A Class V Paddling Test is required to participate in this trip. The minimum age recommendation for these trips is sixteen.

Thunder Run

The Thunder Run is a One Day, Class V stretch of whitewater hosted on the mighty Upper Kern River. Previous rafting experience is required. Minimum age is 16.

Be ready to hike. The river put-in is two trail-miles downhill in the Golden Trout Wilderness. Horses carry the heavy loads. You hike your own gear in our waterproof packs.

Similar to the Thunder Run, the best, most-consistent flows are in early May and June. Book early season trips and cross your fingers that the river flows cooperate. Trips are limited to 15 passengers. Average of three starts weekly, mid-April through mid-July, longer in wet years. Oarboats carry your gear as you carve your way downstream in paddleboats. Oarboat assist paddling is also employed on some trips. Minimum age is 16 on our Forks Trips.

Note: This amazing year, the window for our Forks Trips will be from mid-July through September 15th. It's almost unheard of to be able to offer these majestic trips during this time frame. The conditions will be simply incredible. Don't miss this rare opportunity to run these summer trips!

Whitewater Voyages Guide School

The objective of the course is to instill participants with the skills and impart the art of whitewater rafting on Class III and IV whitewater with the overall goal of imparting the base skill set needed to be a competent River Guide on the Kern River. The six days are jam-packed with information and seminars on the art of reading water, concepts associated with river hydrology, paddle captaining, and Swiftwater Rescue methods and techniques. Our instructors are seasoned veterans with intimate knowledge in all of the subjects taught. The course is designed to be thorough, but is taught in a non-competitive, fun atmosphere. Many life-long friendships have been forged over the course of these classes.

Participants are outfitted for the course when they meet the morning of the first day. Wetsuits, paddling jackets, lifejackets, and helmets are provided for the duration of the course. Students can use their own wetsuits but will need to wear one of our lifejackets to participate.

Whitewater Voyages will provide all of your gear, rafting equipment, and transportation to and from the river for each student along with a hearty lunch each day. Participants are responsible to make their own dinner, breakfast, and camping or lodging arrangements.

The Kern River provides the ideal training ground for river guides. Those that complete the course come away with an enviable skill set that provides an excellent foundation that is the basis for guiding commercially for Whitewater Voyages or any other rafting company in the country. It also provides a fabulous skill set that private boaters can rely on when guiding on their own.

Six Day Guide Kern River Guide school held over two consecutive three-day weekends. Whitewater Voyages’ intensive, world-renowned, guide schools are led by our most talented and knowledgeable instructors. They emphasize hands-on whitewater skill building and practicing in a supportive environment. These guide schools are widely recognized as excellent preparation for both commercial guiding and rafting on one's own. Discounts are available for those intending to guide for Whitewater Voyages.

Southern California’s Most Popular Whitewater and Kayaking Rivers

The kern river:.

The Kern River’s close proximity to Los Angeles and Southern California makes it one of the more popular whitewater rivers in California. Its incredible versatility doesn’t hurt either. Kern River trips can literally run the gamut from multiple day wilderness adventures (complete with mule trains and hiking into put-in) on the Forks of the Kern, to intermediate family trips on the Lower Kern below Lake Isabella. The section in the middle–rather confusingly called the Upper Kern–has several different sections you can run, ranging from beginner to expert. Logistics on this section of river are super easy, making it popular with private boaters needing to arrange their own shuttles.

Kern River Rafting Safari - Whitewater

Kern River Rafting Safari

Trip length, who it's for.

Class IV for experienced and beginner paddlers. Minimum age 12 (16 - high water)

GATEWAY CITY

Meeting location.

Combine big summer whitewater rafting, a beautiful high desert canyon cut through the Sierra foothills, and an ultra-comfortable ‘safari style’ backcountry camp (think glamping).  California is renowned for its world-class whitewater rivers. And with its granite gorges, smooth boulders, steep drops, and swirling pools, the Kern is quintessential California whitewater. This is a uniquely action-packed and comfortable luxury camping adventure on one the finest Class IV rivers in the West – there is no other trip like it in the United States.

A note from Pete – The Kern & our Safari Camp:

Rafting Glamping Tent

We are so excited to show people the Kern River. It is quintessential Califorina Whitewater and one of the rivers I dreamed about running when I first started guiding. It is also giving us a chance to bring our award winning Upper Klamath Safari Camp trip and concept to another river.

Our Upper Klamath River Safari took almost 5 years to develop and eventually introduced 1000’s of people to wild rivers. Along the way it won awards from Sunset and other publications. The trip was active, very comfortable, and most importantly – really fun. With Klamath Dam removal (a great thing for the river) 2023 was our last season doing the Upper Klamath River Safari. We are now beyond excited to be able to bring the same style trip to the Kern River and Southern California.

I love extremely remote and wild places. But I also love active days outside followed by good food and drink, unique & comfortable accommodations, all shared with friends new and old. It is why we designed the Upper Klamath River Safari and why we are so excited for this trip.

I hope we will have a chance to show it to you.

Beginning in its headwaters on Mt Whitney, California’s highest peak, the Kern tumbles south through wilderness and then the Kernville area before turning southwest and cutting a deep canyon through the Greenhorn Mountains. Known as the ‘Lower Kern,’ this canyon creates a stretch that is accessible but secluded, with high desert beauty and amazing summer whitewater.

The whitewater is the style that has made California famous in the boating community – big clean drops over massive boulders bounded by stunning granite walls. The two-day trip begins with a fun Class-III warm-up, making this stretch a recommended rafting trip for first-timers or experts in good health. There is plenty of opportunity to learn the finer points of river running before the whitewater intensifies. From lunch on day one through the end of day two the river is packed with exciting but approachable Class IV whitewater – there are few summer stretches of river like it.

In the afternoon we will float into our Kern River Safari Camp . The camp is a safari style riverside base camp located deep in the canyon.  There is a shaded eating and hang-out area, hammocks, and beach games. You’ll enjoy your own shaded safari style walk-in tent with a private deck that is set among massive granite boulders with views of the river and the high desert canyon. The late afternoon can be spent hiking, playing games in the sun, having a drink by the river, or just lounging in a hammock. In the evening we will serve appetizers, a big dinner, and dessert, followed by a comfortable night under the star-studded high desert sky.

The Kern Rafting Safari is done with Momentum’s signature style, attention to detail, and handcrafted quality. With creative menus, personal service and hospitality, one of the most experienced (and friendly) guide staffs in the world, and with all the little touches we are known for. Our comfortable camp makes this trip an incredible introduction to camping (and ideal for those who find regular camping to be not their cup of tea:)). And the itinerary and the Class III warm up section make it a perfect rafting trip for first-timers in good health, as they have plenty of time to master the finer points of river running.

The location of the Kern also adds to its accessibility. It is a short 3 hour drive from the Los Angeles area, 4 hours from Palm Springs, and there are direct flights from cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Denver. Trips can be combined with time exploring Historic Kernville and Sequoia National Park, as well as enjoying world class fly fishing, hiking, and mountain biking.

Join us for a unique combination of some of the country’s best summer whitewater and a unique safari style riverside retreat – all a short drive from LA.  It’s a quick, active, and comfortable wild river escape – away from traffic, lines, and hectic daily schedules.

Please Note: This trip is perfect for experienced and first time paddlers (and for those who find regular camping to be not their cup of tea). However all guests need to be in reasonable physical condition for the whitewater rafting section. If you have any questions or concerns please give us a call or an email.

The Kern River has over 60 miles of commercially-run whitewater.

Located in California, we are just three hours north of Los Angeles in the Sequoia National Forest.

Kern River Tours offers trips to suit all ages and experience levels. Raft trips from 1 hour to 3 days.

Whether you are looking for a short mild jaunt, or a raging class V multiple-day wilderness adventure,

We have it waiting for you!

Welcome to kern river tours.

Our entire staff is looking forward to exceeding your expectations and providing you with a quality outdoor experience.

About the Kern River:

Located in California, we are just three hours north of Los Angeles in the Sequoia National Forest. The Kern River has over 60 miles of commercially-run whitewater.

The season begins in April as the snow pack from the western slope of the highest peak in the continental United States, Mt. Whitney, begins to melt. This snow melt drains into the upper river basin and makes it way down to the Lake Isabella reservoir. The water is then let out of the Isabella dam forming a 21-mile stretch of excellent whitewater. On the Lower Kern, we run one and two-day whitewater trips into September.

We look forward to serving you and providing you with a quality outdoor experience. Our staff is excited each year to help meet the needs of our guests and get them out on the river. We are proud to work in such an enjoyable and exciting occupation and on one of America’s most exciting and versatile rivers. We look forward to the great times ahead with you as our guest.

We take pride in being able to accommodate just about all age and experience levels you can bring. Our company operates on all commercial sections of the Kern, including the Forks, high in the Golden Trout Wilderness of the Southern Sierra. Whether you are looking for a short mild jaunt or a raging class V multiple-day wilderness adventure, we have it waiting for you and your group.

Our guides are among the most knowledgeable and friendly in the business, having run many different rivers. Their love of whitewater and people can be seen from their mastery of the rapids and the delicious meals they prepare.

By Far Our Best Experience!

“We have been white water rafting on many rivers in many states. This is by far our best experience. We had Erin as our guide and she was knowledgeable AND patient with us. She really knew the river.”

Far Exceeded Expectations!

“The best experience! Far exceeded expectations! First time rafting and the guides were helpful and informative. Not only were they experts in training but had the best lame river jokes. Stayed entertained throughout. The photos and commentary were great too. Will definitely be back!”

Slide title

I’ve now done this full day adventure trip twice because I love it so much. When I had some friends visiting me from out of town it was the first thing I scheduled. What really makes it so good is the quality of the river guides. They’re so good at what they do; you feel safe while they create a super fun atmosphere for the trip. And the rapids are no joke.

Middle Fork of the Salmon

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is the quintessential river trip. It begins as a small stream near 6000 feet above sea level at Boundary Creek and drops nearly 3000 feet before meeting the Salmon River near Cache Bar.

Selway River

The Selway River is simply one of the most exclusive river adventures in the U.S.  One of the most remote and wild commercial river trips in the U.S. the Selway only has one launch per day (private or commercial) and has a comparatively short season from mid-may until the end of July.

Main Salmon

For any family looking for one of the premier river adventures in the U.S. the Main Salmon should be on the list.  Big splashy class III and IV rapids, mixed with smaller whitewater and placid pools mean this trip has all the excitement one could want without having too much.

Hells Canyon

Hells Canyon is the deepest canyon in North America, and is filled with thrilling whitewater, arguably some of the biggest rapids in the Pacific Northwest.

Lower Salmon

The Canyons of the Lower Salmon River are filled with fun whitewater rapids and enormous beaches that rival any tropical destination.

Find A River Adventure

The first commercial river rafting trips in the United States were launched in Idaho. Idaho outfitters always have been leaders and standard-setters for this industry.

Idaho also has more places to go river rafting. No other state can claim as many recreational river miles as Idaho. The American Whitewater Affiliation counts more than 3,100 whitewater river miles in the state.

Outfitters offer rafting trips of all kinds for all ages and abilities. Families enjoy fun excursions on rivers such as the Main Salmon, the North Fork and Main Payette Moyie, and the St. Joe. Sightseers like quiet flat-water floats on rivers such as the Clearwater, the Boise River and the Snake in the Snake River Birds of Prey Area. Whitewater seekers go for the Middle Fork of the Salmon, Hells Canyon, the Lochsa, Selway, Bruneau, Jarbidge, South Fork Payette, or Snake River, Southern Idaho. Idaho outfitters take care of everything on these trips. Guides row the rafts or lead guests in paddling their own. They provide tents and waterproof gear bags. They cook all the meals, including salads made from fresh fruits and vegetables and Dutch-oven baked breads and desserts. They lead games on the beach and around the campfire.

Most Idaho river rafting companies carry inflatable kayaks along on their trips for the enjoyment of their guests. Guides provide instruction.

3 Best Spring Time Rafting Trips on the Kern River

Raft icon Sierra South Mountain Sports Kern River California

Early Season Rafting Trips

As the final days of Winter are upon us and warmer days are approaching, we are gearing up for the 2021 Kern River Rafting season. Early season rafting trips are always some of our favorites. The excitement of the flows rising, the lush green scenery, and perfect temperatures make for a great day on the river. We consider “early season” to be April and May and these 3 trips are the best option during that time.

Upper Kern River

1. Full Day Upper Kern Class IV

The Full Day Upper Kern Class IV trip is one of the best bang for your buck rafting trips in the country. When the flows are above 1200cfs the Upper Kern provides multiple high quality sections of Class IV whitewater to choose from. The rapids are fast paced, technical, and adrenaline filled. This trip last 6-8 hours with a mid day lunch to refuel for the afternoon.

2. Half Day Upper Kern Class IV

class II waves as a group of rafters floats down the river with mountains in the background Sierra South Mountain Sports Kern River California

Opting for a half-day on the Upper Kern still gives you an action-packed morning or afternoon but also gives you extra time to explore the Kern River Valley. You will start your rafting trip with a warm-up lap on Class II-III to work on becoming a team then head upriver to the Cables or Limestone Class IV section.

3. Lickety Split Class II-III

The Lickety Split Rafting trip is best for first time rafters and young children. This short 1.5 hour trip is the fastest, easiest, and cheapest trip we offer. Raft for 3 miles from the Kern River Powerhouse back to Kernville. Enjoy 5 rapids ranging from Class I to Class III, a few swimming spots, and pretty views of town.
