Kindle Voyage Teardown: It Sure Is Cramped Behind That Glass Screen
For those who prefer the finer things in life, Amazon's Kindle Voyage provides a luxurious e-reading experience with a steep $290 price tag—if you also want wireless connectivity. But that didn't stop the folks at iFixit from immediately tearing it asunder once they got their hands on one. If you think the Voyage is pretty on the outside, you'll definitely enjoy its electronic eye candy on the inside.

So how does Amazon justify charging almost three Benjamins for the Voyage? Apparently a discreet ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts its screen brightness qualifies as a luxury feature.
And in lieu of old-school mechanical buttons like the proletariat have to use for turning the page on their e-readers, the Voyage uses a "custom-designed force sensor made of carbon and silver" that reacts to gentle pressure from a finger and provides a subtle vibrating haptic response in return. It's basically the Beluga caviar of buttons, and certainly helps justify the Voyage's price tag.
Overall iFixit rated the Kindle Voyage a 7 out of 10 for repairability, which means that while some of its modular components are easily replaced, there are also some fragile bits like its glass screen that are harder to swap out. But if you're spending $300 on an e-reader instead of a tablet, it's probably a good idea to take special care of it anyways. [ iFixit ]

Kindle Voyage Screen Replacement
Introduction.
Everyone has dropped an electronic device and felt the sinking feeling of picking it up only to find a shattered screen. This guide shows you how to replace the screen on your Kindle Voyage should that ever happen.
What you need
Step 1 back panel.
Insert a plastic opening tool between the plastic panel shown on the device.
Use the tool to pry the plastic away from the device.
There will be adhesive holding this piece of plastic to the device. You may have to pull pretty hard to get it separated.

Use an aluminum driver attached with a Phillips head size #00 to remove the four 3mm screws shown in the picture. For reassembly, note that the top two and bottom two screws are different sizes.
Once the screws are removed, the back panel can slide off the device.
Remove the magnetic component with the magnetic head of the aluminum driver.
Step 5 Screen
Use a spudger to push up the black tabs on all three ribbon cables.
Once the tabs are open, gently pull the ribbon cables out of their housings.
There is quite a bit of glue between the screen and the case, So before inserting any opening tool, use plenty of heat to soften the glue.
Insert a plastic opening tool into the small crack between the screen and the front panel. Counter-intuitively, start away from the fragile corners and in the middle of a side, near the touch buttons.
Work your way around the screen until you can pry it all the way open.
There is adhesive holding the screen to the front panel, so you will need to apply a lot of heat and some pressure to completely separate the two.
Once the screen is free of the front panel, pull the loose ribbon cables through the openings in the bottom of the screen.
Lift the screen off of the front panel.
To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

My screen glass is cracked, but the e-ink screen is fine. I found a replacement glass on Amazon, but how can I separate the e-ink display from the glass without destroying it? Is there a replacement piece that contains both?

I'm wondering the same thing. How are you guys separating the screen? it's just not coming off. it's crumbing and cracking rather than lifting.

My guess is that the e-ink TFT screen is bonded to the glass digitizer with a UV curing optically clear adhesive. The chance of separating the broken digi and the e-ink part without cracking the TFT are close to impossible. I know they use a very strong thin wire system to separate LCD's on small devices like phones but not sure if the e-ink screen is strong. I have managed to source a couple of recycled working screens complete with digi and e-ink together for some customers. As soon as we have them here and done the repairs, we will experiment on getting one of the damaged ones apart to see if we can replace just the digitizer. REO Technology Ltd. www.reotech.co.uk

Hey folks! i feel like i found the replacement for a broken screen for kindle voyage. I am not sure about links sharing policy here, but if you will google "ED060TC1" you'll find plenty of offers from china. In order not to be screwed by amazon manufacturer uses "Montana" as brand on a front panel. Gonna order one today.

If not cracked, but it just doesn't respond, try a reboot. With a good charge and then unplugged do the following. Press and hold power for a full 30 to 40 seconds. Then release power and let it reboot. If cracked, then the whole display and digitizer would need to be replaced.
After learning that Kindle Voyage has a "Li-ion Polymer Battery" (source: iFixit) I googled and found this: If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine. There is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life.
I have owned a Kindle Voyage since it was released and it has been heavily used. I have decently diminished battery life and what appears to be some sort of "burn-in" where the pixels are stuck dark. It creates permanent dirty looking shadows on the screen that are really obvious IRL, but won't photograph well.

Yes, you have to get an entire screen assembly (glass+LCD). I haven't seen any replacement screens for the Voyage; I've seen replacement glass (digitizer) but that's not what you need. That's where I'd start. As far as buttons it's either another Voyage or an Oasis. Of course the 5th gen Kindle has buttons also but no lights. The Kindle Paperwhite 11th gen (6.8" screen) is about the "nicest" model they make now, no buttons, plastic screen, so no where near as crisp as the Voyage, warm light, dark mode.
