The Ataris are an American alternative rock band from Anderson, Indiana, that formed in 1995. They have released five studio albums to date, their most successful being “So Long, Astoria” which was certified Gold.

The four piece came together in 1995 when, using a 4-track tape recorder, singer-songwriter and guitarist Kristopher Roe, and guitarist Jasin Thomason, would write and record demos with a drum machine whilst searching for a full-time drummer.

The band’s big break came in 1996 when Roe and Thomason attended a show to see the band The Vandals, who owned their own label “Kung Fu Records. Thomason gave a tape to Joe Escalante, a bassist from the band. The Ataris were later signed to the record label and eventually found drummer Derrick Plourde. Fast-forward a couple of months to April 29th 1997, when The Ataris released their debut album “Anywhere but Here” which only took a week to record. The band relocated to Santa Barbara, California. The band had to undergo some line up changes in this transition period, but their popularity started to bloom.

In 2002 saw the Ataris new album “So Long, Astoria” start to take shape. Their contract with Kung Fu Records had expired but they had the attention of Columbia Records to decided to sign with them. This album catered to a much more mainstream audience and generated successful singles such as “In This Diary” and “The Saddest Song”. The album also featured their cover of Don Henley’s “the Boys of Summer” which became their “accidental” second single after a radio station, KROQ in Los Angeles started playing it. However, it is the band’s highest charting single to date, reaching No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album sold over 700,000 units in total and was certified Gold.

The band has remained a band to this day but it is very much the brainchild of Roe, with him being the driving force behind the band and the original member. In 2013, The Ataris began a North American tour with Kris Roe and the former members John Collura, Mike Davenport and Chris Knapp to celebrate the 10 years of their most successful album, “So Long, Astoria”.

Live reviews

The Ataris play with a minimalistic set up, but the sound they create is intense and forceful. The band’s do-it-yourself approach to making music and touring has instilled an authenticity into the personality of the band that has garnered them a strong cult following.

The Ataris always give their all when performing live. Their guitarist and singer, Kristopher Roe, vigorously strums his guitar and sings in a raw voice with deep passion. The band plays in a fast pop-punk kind of way, spitting out catchy, loud, distorted songs at rapid speeds. The band has also been known to elaborate on some of their songs’ ending by going into experimental droning with heavy reverb and strong crashing of the cymbals. The band plays with the kind of emotion that conveys a strong sense of teenage angst, which deeply connects with the audience as they belt out the lyrics at the top of their lungs.

The band usually plays at small venues allowing the audience to experience a more intimate performance by getting up close and personal to the band. The band seems to gain much inspiration and feed from their audience’s deep connection to their songs. The Ataris usually plays with minimal stage theatrics and often leaves the lights up so the fans can clearly see them allowing the band to connect better to the audience when performing their highly athematic songs.

The Ataris’ setlist contains songs from most of their discography that will please audiences. You will most likely find the audience crowd surfing to such songs as “Road Signs and Rock Songs” or you might even hear them perform a cover song by one of their favorite bands, The Replacements.

As a pivotal band in late nineties pop-punk it’s no surprise that The Ataris stir a bit of nostalgia for the fans who have grown up listening to them in their teenage years. With five albums worth of material, you’re bound to hear one of your favourites live. From the offset energy levels are through the roof, as the band hook the crowd with some of their classics like “Take Off and Landings” and “So Long, Astoria” taken from the album with same title, which really catapulted them into the mainstream. Even after all those years of relentlessly touring, The Ataris seem to have not lost the enthusiasm and in fact with age their performances just keep getting better with Kris Roe’s weathered, gravelly vocals mastered to perfection. Their audiences see a good mixture of old and new fans who share the same undying passion, each song is met with rapturous applause. Even in the moments of long instrumental where the band go into their own as they get lost in the rhythm, they take the audience with them as they are both moved and mesmerised. Aptly coming back for an encore with “Looking Back on Today” the fans sing back almost twice as loud, while the band beam from ear to ear. Whether or not you grew up listening to them, after seeing The Ataris they will be one of your favourite live bands.

Ataris' Kris Roe Explains the Meaning Behind His Arizona Tattoo, Classic Phoenix Venues, and Warped Tour

Kris Roe 's relationship with Arizona has been a tumultuous one. His band, The Ataris , started touring 15 years ago, and Roe's stops in Arizona have always been marked by some seriously bad luck. After a couple near-death experiences, he got a tattoo of the Arizona state flag as a good luck charm of sorts.

Believe it or not, in spite of multiple car accidents and broken bones, Roe loves Arizona. He's been spending a lot of time with former bandmate Bob Hoag at Flying Blanket Studios working on The Ataris' sixth album, The Graveyard of the Atlantic .

Tonight, Roe will take a break from recording to play a solo acoustic show at Martini Ranch. He goes on at 9 p.m., so be sure to get there early.

We recently caught up with Kris Roe to discuss the experiences that inspired the Copper star tattoo, his favorite old venues in Phoenix, and how much Warped Tour has changed.

Up on the Sun: So, you're in Mesa right now?

Kris Roe: Yeah, I've been in the area recording. My friend Bob Hoag runs a studio called Flying Blanket Recording in Mesa. The way The Ataris works is I record everything and show the parts to Bob, who runs the studio. He plays drums and I play the other instruments. That's been off and on. I'm trying to finish our album. We've got, like, 20 songs recorded and I'm just trying my best to finish my vocals for the last bunch of songs and put about 12 on the record. The rest will be remaining tracks for split 7 inches and random b-sides and things. Looking to get the album out at the start of the new year.

Awesome. Tell me about your Arizona flag tattoo.

I had several close calls with death in this state. It's sort of become this ongoing joke with my friends and my ex-wife and everybody. They'd be like, 'Alright, call us when you get to Arizona and when you leave Arizona.' I got the tattoo of the state flag...because I love the emblem. I actually have a daughter named Starla and I thought it was the most awesome flag, state or otherwise. I got a horseshoe that I used to wear around my wrist. My friend makes jewelry. I had the horseshoe tattooed below it because spills the luck into the flag. Here's the list of my close calls with death in your lovely state:

I got in a pretty bad traffic accident in Tempe when we were playing in town one time. [I] made a left turn and some guy blew through a traffic light and slammed into me and my ex and totaled her car. It was a miracle seeing her not hurt.

Broke my hand one time jumping off the stage, got in a fight with some kid who was throwing lit cigarettes. The guy was being a stupid fucking kid. Whatever, it was one of those instances where you come to a show to fuck with somebody on stage who's playing a show. It was the last day of our nine month tour, and I was just wanting to get off stage to drive home to California. This kid picked the last minute of the set the last time, it was just something stupid. First I told security to get the kid out and they didn't understand what I was saying. I jumped in the crowd, the guy swung at me, I swung at him, I hit him like five times, broke my hand. That's the last time I ever got in a fight in my entire life. Probably the first time as well.

What venue was that at?

That was at The Nile. But, by far the best one, and this one that convinced me at the time that I had some weird, weird luck here. My friend and I...I finished playing a show here, and we were driving back to California. I hadn't seen him in a long time, it was an old friend of mine that ran a record store that we had our record released in Indianapolis and I had no idea he was living here. I said, 'Dude let's drive to the next show together in your brand new car.'

We were driving the 8 to San Diego and his car just broke down in the desert. His car was literally off the lot brand new. We were like, 'What the fuck's going on?' This is such bad luck I have. We stopped about 100 yards up from a call box and he was like, 'I'm gonna walk to that call box and call. If you wanna stay outside the car, that's fine.'

My mentality was 'Fuck that I'm staying in the car, there's snakes, scorpions, and it's 110 degrees -- no way. I sat in the car and it's safer in here, no problem. I was sitting in the passenger seat, a fucking semi comes along and hits the damn car, sends it off 15 feet. It just felt like someone pushed the car 15 feet, I didn't know what happened. I look and I see this semi just fishtailing and it kept on going. So, we call the cops and I look in the rear view and I see my friend jumping up and down because he sees his brand new car getting smashed and he runs to see if I'm alright. I'm like, 'Yeah I'm alright, I'm just shaken up, what the fuck happened?' The highway patrol come and they were complete assholes to us. They're like, 'Why weren't you guys more pulled over?' Were like, 'Well the car died and we pushed it off as car as we could. What, do you want us to push it off out in the desert?'

They basically said if you guys were like two feet to left, you would have been dead instantly, so it was luck. His whole entire driver side was destroyed. I was shaken up [but] there was nothing wrong with me.

The one time I was driving back to Indiana, a giant cinder block flew off the back of some guy's truck. He passed me aggressively driving at like 110, 115 miles per hour. He goes boom past me on the left and the cinder block flew off the back of his truck and flew underneath my, I had a Dodge Neon, flew underneath my Neon and broke up and exited out the back. It didn't hurt the car, it just scared the fuck out of me. If it would have went through my windshield, it would have killed me.

I was staying in a Holiday Inn out in Chandler or something one time and we were playing somewhere up there, maybe it was on Scottsdale. I remember the door going into the hotel, there was something weird with it. It malfunctioned and my hand got stuck in the sliding glass door.

The last one I can think of was one of the first times we ever drove out here to play from California. This was just my own stupidity, teenage drinking at its finest. I remember we played a show in Vegas the night before, and spent all night drinking Canadian. Me and my friend we just sat in there drinking whiskey out of the bottle until the sun came up. Drove all the way to Arizona with no AC in the van and I nearly passed out and got alcohol poisoning on stage. That one I don't count because it was my own stupidity.

The rest of them yeah, convinced me for awhile, but then strangely enough, here I am. I've been out here six or seven times in the last two years. I love it out here, I feel like this is almost home to me. I don't really have a place back home anymore. It's always keep the shit in storage, tour, and then record. So, yeah, me and fiancé, we really like it out here and are definitely quite fond of it now. The irony of it all is that I never thought I'd be spending the majority of my time in this state. Maybe it was a premonition, the tattoo is actually telling me this is where your home will be eventually. I like to look at the bright side of things, so maybe there's some kind of optimism in it all.

I can't deny it, that shit scared the hell out of me, all those instances. I wrote a song on our So Long Astoria album called "Eight of Nine" and it's basically about all these close calls we have and how we take life for granted. Sort of carpe diem , seize the day kind of thing. I have gone through a lot of things, pretty close calls in my life. I'm grateful for them because I feel they've made me more life aware and more grateful for the things I have and I always remember that. You don't really need this rich, lavish lifestyle. You just need family and friends, the clothes on your back, and just be grateful for what you have.

Has your luck improved since you got the tattoo? You're still here, after all.

Not directly, my life's improved just because of my own life choices. If it's because something directly related to getting that tattoo, then that's just pure circumstance and coincidence. I think obviously your life's formed by the reckless choices that you make and I think there's times in my life there was certain ways I was living my life that I would definitely not do now that I'm 34.

When it came to chaos, I had my share. But when it came to playing shows, I always looked up to the bands that played shows that were very unpredictable. Kind of the opposite of all this auto tune perfect bullshit nonsense that there is today. I like the bands that you go to the show and you never know what was going to happen. That is what got me into punk rock when I was a kid, and why I feel punk rock now has nothing to do with what I'm into. It's the opposite, it's stale, very predictable, perfect, Justin Bieber hair, auto tune nonsense. Punk rock and rock music in general is supposed to be dangerous and unpredictable. I like to have to have an element of that in our shows now. Now I've got the back of an 85-year-old man because I jumped in the crowd, jumped off the PA.

I remember at The Venue Scottsdale I think it was, it looked like this Frontierland old west crappy venue. I remember they had these giant wooden barrels. It really looked like you were on some ride in Frontierland at Disneyland. I think there was some weirdness with the sound that night. I was just frustrated, so I climbed up, they had this...unless you've been there...

I think I was at that show. That was at The Cajun House, I wanna say with Sugarcult?

The Cajun House! Yeah, that place. Thank you for reminding me. I just remember it was a weird show and something was going wrong on our end. I remember climbing up there, I think I jumped off. Too many nights of doing that and now I really pay for it full force.

I won't trade anything. It's been a good time and I'm still going. We can pull off a show that is something current, yet at the same time embraces everything that is and will remain for the fans that listen to The Ataris.

I remember that night. The Cajun House is now called the Venue Scottsdale.

I think over the years we've played probably every single venue this place has to offer. I'm 34, so there's some venues, I don't know if you remember. We started playing out here when I was like probably 19. There was Boston's , there was the old Nita's Hideaway , then of course there was the Tempe Bowl , which was the kind of iconic place everybody...like the Chain Reaction in Anaheim. It was one of our favorite venues to play out here. I'll always remember that place. There's still definitely a good music scene out here.

This show--the acoustic shows-- [the]great thing about that is I'm able to play whatever comes to mind, and take some requests, and play I think a fair representation, a cross section of all of our albums, but at the same time, show our fans some of these newer songs that we've been working on. When we go out and play with a band, we're kind of limited to 20 or 30 songs with the full line up.

Since you're in Mesa, I'm sure you've noticed that The Nile has reopened.

Yeah, we played the Underground right after it reopened. That's the hottest venue, ever. It was 115 outside that night and downstairs all they had was a swamp cooler that was broken, so you gotta add another 15 degrees, so it was probably 130. We looked like we jumped in a pool, we were so drenched in sweat. It was the most disgusting show we've ever played, but it reminded me of what I loved about the fun basement shows and why we started playing shows like that. I'm glad The Nile reopened. I hope that they can keep it going for a long time.

You also cracked your head open at Warped Tour here, right?

You can add that to the list, I always forget that one, but yeah, I cracked my head open with my guitar. That's the price you pay when you're being a chaotic little monkey like I was at the time. It was really hot that night, it was super late when we played. It was a fun Warped Tour .

I saw it was here this past Sunday, and I was like, 'You know, I like Lucero and I like Against Me! , but every other thing on that list was like 'Eh'.' Kevin [Lyman] runs Warped Tour, he's a really great guy, we're really thankful for everything he did for us. For me, being 34, I wish that they'd put some bands on there that are more my speed, but fortunately I think as I grow, I'm more the punk show and indie listener than I am the kind of bands that are on Warped Tour now.

I think Warped Tour has kind of pigeonholed itself into a corner with one type of thing, and even back in the day when Warped Tour started, even before we played it, it was a little bit more diverse. I gotta say that obviously Kevin is gonna do what's good financially because that's gonna stay viable in this economy.

The people that are my age are like, 'Fuck it's hot out there, I don't want to that. I'll wait for a club I like.' Nowadays they have Bamboozle, they have Bonnaroo, they have Coachella, they have the one in the northwest. There's more and more of these three-day weekend festivals that I think everyone realizes that the touring festival like Warped Tour is a thing of the past. That tour would never work if it started today. That tour works because of what it has grown to become. I think he keeps planning to get younger and younger audiences, so it recycles. It's smart, but I wish there was a tour like that went around the US and had diverse types of bands. A bit more indie and punk.

Lit & Hoobastank: Tried & True Tour

With special guests alien ant farm and kris roe of the ataris, october 27, 2022 | 7:30 pm, experience the lit & hoobastank: tried & true tour with special guests alien ant farm and kris roe of the ataris.

About Lit: Lit is considered one of the preeminent bands to have come out of the post-grunge era of the late 90’s and helped define an entire generation of SoCal power punk with hard-charging hits like “My Own Worst Enemy,” “Miserable,” “Zip-Lock,”, and “Lipstick & Bruises.” The band has released 6 worldwide studio albums, including their RIAA Certified Platinum A Place in the Sun, and they are currently writing and recording to release new material.

The band has remained one of the most active bands from that era and still consists of three original and primary members including brothers A. Jay (lead vocals), Jeremy Popoff (lead guitar), and Kevin Baldes (bass). Their mega-hit “My Own Worst Enemy” is one of the most broadcasted, covered, karaoke’d, recognizable rock hits of the last 20 years and won them a Billboard Music Award for Modern Rock Song of the Year. Their unforgettable video for “Miserable” featuring Pamela Anderson was one of the top 10 most played songs of 2000. As recently as 2017 Lit found themselves back on the charts hitting #1 on the CMT 12-Pack with their video for “Fast”, from their These Are the Days album.

About Hoobastank: On November 20th, 2021, Hoobastank celebrated 20 years of their self-titled release, Hoobastank. The 2001 album launched the career of the band to mainstream success with huge singles including “Crawling In The Dark”, “Running Away” and “Remember Me” – all of which have since been certified RIAA platinum. Almost two decades later, the band is still clocking in at over 6M monthly listeners on Spotify and “Crawling In The Dark” has surpassed the 100M streaming mark across DSPs. The band’s 2003 follow-up studio album The Reason took them to even greater heights and solidified Hoobastank as a household name. The title track “The Reason” went 4x platinum and racked up quite a few #1 chart positions along the way, while the album went 2x platinum. “ The Reason” has over 2 Billion streams/views which has helped lead the way to the bands catalog surpassing the 3 billion mark across the different streaming platforms. The band looks forward to continuing their success in the years to come while also celebrating what they have accomplished so far. They have been hitting the road again in 2022 and hope to see all of their fans in person at a show sometime soon.

Don't Expect To Hear 'Boys of Summer' On The Ataris' Next Tour

kris roe tour

A lot has happened to the Ataris since the release of 2003's So Long, Astoria, and the California punk band's frontman, Kris Roe, says his own life has been turned upside down and inside out. First, Ataris drummer Chris Knapp and bassist Michael Davenport were cut from the fold, leaving just Roe and guitarist John Collura. Eventually, Roe and Collura recruited five musicians to fill out the band: a guitarist, a drummer, a bassist, a pianist and a cellist. Between the subtractions and the additions, Roe and his wife divorced.

"I also lost many friendships because of personal issues and drugs with them," Roe explained. "So I went into therapy and started taking anxiety meds. I'm now somewhere where I feel like I'm finally being honest in my life and not living some kind of f---ed-up lie. I'm playing music with people I love who are my true friends, and it feels like the first day this band started."

Roe -- who says the group's forthcoming disc, Welcome the Night, is being mixed and should surface in March -- thinks that, at least in the Ataris' case, change has been a good thing, something he's welcomed. Along with Collura, he was able to foster what he described as the band's "natural" evolution, unimpeded; Knapp and Davenport had thwarted previous attempts to progress, he says, and thus, they had to go.

"It does sound like a different band, but to me it's the next natural step," Roe said of the album, which he claims was heavily influenced by bands like Kent, the Doves, Sigur Rós and Slowdive, not "East Bay power-pop stuff." "This band has always been about evolving. The bands that inspired me were always the ones that kept me guessing. I feel the one thing that music doesn't have room for today is safety. There are too many bands playing this f---ing safe rock.

"Some of those bands are good at what they do, but they are entertainers," he continued. "I aspire to say something more with my music. I want to make music that pushes people to check out something different and not just follow with the rest of the sheep. I feel like punk rock has become a complete joke. I mean, I'll never turn my back on where this band came from, but you just start feeling like what you were perceived as doesn't represent you."

The five newest members of the Ataris -- guitarist Paul Carabello, cellist Angus Cooke, keyboardist Bob Hoag, bassist Sean Hansen and drummer Shane Chickeles -- all hail from indie-rock backgrounds. The Ataris have been working on Welcome the Night, which will contain 12 tracks, for more than a year with producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave, INXS, Gang of Four) at Seedy Underbelly Studios in California's San Fernando Valley.

The LP revolves around a dark story inspired by a recurring dream Roe has had since childhood. "At the start of it, it's the end of everything, the end of the world," he said. "The sun turns black, and I'm in this little church in this small town, and then I wake up. There've been different variations of it throughout my life. But the album has religious and spiritual undertones and addresses issues like hope, loss, questioning life, how we're so afraid of dying.

"There's always a part of me that will love the bands I grew up with, but at 28, I feel like I'm way more influenced by the more textural, atmospheric, indie-rock stuff now," Roe continued. "We felt like we wanted to make a record that represented us as people today. I didn't feel we were doing that anymore. We'd kind of outgrown the band, musically, and had to evolve past what this band had become."

Which is why fans won't be hearing much old material like "The Boys of Summer" on the Ataris' forthcoming tour, which Roe said will probably happen just before the album's release. They'll focus on the new material, mostly, since the Ataris are a much different band now.

"Look, we've written something that could really be an album that lives for a long time, that sticks around," he said. "This album will age well. It's something I feel like, overall, I like a lot more, better than what we'd created before."

The Ataris’ Kris Roe on Upcoming Tour, Solo Work, and Jack Kerouac

[email protected]

Long-time pop-punk front runners The Ataris are heading out on a ten-year reunion tour for their record So Long, Astoria in March, playing the album in its’ entirety and (for loyal but aging fans like myself) hoping to bring back to light, even if for just one night, that epic feeling of youthful camaraderie and the days when bands with two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, some power chords and a few ex-girlfriends to write songs about became an international phenomenon. The tour will feature the original lineup from the recording of So Long, Astoria.

The Ataris, like most long-term bands, have undergone lineup changes over the years. Front man and founder Kris Roe even caused a bit of a ruckus by throwing former drummer Rob Felicetti ’s equipment offstage during a 2012 gig in New Jersey. That was over the top. But he has kept his band relevant in the punk arena for nearly two decades now and when I spoke with him about the upcoming album reunion tour, the impression I got from him confirmed my long-standing suspicions that he is one of the hardest working guys in the scene and does what it takes to keep his baby alive, doing it by himself when he needs to.

Roe and his songs, to me at least, were and remain to be a beacon of what life should be about. Partying, girls, and that epic feeling you get inside when you spend your life pursuing your passions and making your own way. While his lyrics were often cynical and full of adolescent spite, if I looked deep enough, I was always able to pull out that candy coated silver lining. So I was more than excited when the opportunity arose to interview Roe, for what I knew would be a good story, and to preview one of the touring shows Colorado Music Buzz is most excited about in 2014.

He spoke about his songwriting, the tour, and where his solo work is headed after the tour’s conclusion.  “The best songs and the best music to me is the music that still has a lot of honesty and sincerity, has a lot of imperfections,” says Roe. “It has the beautiful mistakes that make things good. Too much autotune bullshit these days.”

So Long, Astoria , released in March of 2003 during the latter end of pop-punks reign of mainstream popularity, is the album that Roe feels brought The Ataris into their own light. “If I were turning someone on to The Ataris, I would definitely give them So Long, Astoria,” says Roe. “It’s the album that I feel defines what our band is about. We had three independent albums out before that and we really built up a grassroots following, but it was that album that I felt I was growing and figured out how to come into my own as a songwriter.”

Leaning hard on his signature picturesque lyricism, the album served to trademark The Ataris’ style. “I learned how to focus on the strong points, which for me was always telling personal, vivid stories,” says Roe. “That was one time in my life when I felt I was really able to hone in on that part of my life and everything that I was going through, and tell the most descriptive stories that I could.”

The Ataris have called California home for the majority of their career, but Roe is originally from Indiana and lets his roots seep into his music. “I think it obviously fits our songs,” says Roe. “There are so many bands that are what they are because they are from Southern California, or from New York, or wherever. I always carry a piece of the Midwest in what I write because for me, being it the photography that I take or the songs I write, I like the kind of sad, broken down beauty of these places that were once in their heyday, and that time has passed. That’s definitely in the songs, but I think moving to California helped me grow as a person and show a bit more hopeful side in my writing.”

The most recent release for fans of the band to grab was Roe’s acoustic album, Hang Your Head in Hope. Roe just came off a solo acoustic tour across the Midwest and South, where he performed songs from The Ataris as well as his acoustic album and showcased his photography. “The normal band, when we go tour, we’ll tour for a couple months then take a couple months off,” he says. “In that time I’ll go do shows on my own. “

The recent Polar Vortex was a companion on that tour. “The shows were great,” Roe says. “It was a lot of fun with really good turnouts. Aside from one show, in Austin, Texas of all places, where there was an ice storm. It was like I was following the polar vortex everywhere I went.” Roe plans to do a solo tour in the UK, Europe and China. “Keeping it back to back, then we’ll record and tour with the band after that.”

Roe and company are back on the road in March, hiting Summit Music Hall March 15. Lucky for us, the Mile High City stands out for Roe and his band. “I’ve always loved Denver,” says Roe. “As somebody that reads, my first memory of Denver was reading Kerouac’s On the Road , and playing the Bluebird Theatre , and being on Larimer Street, and all that area where Kerouac talks about. For me, that was big. I also always felt that Denver has a great music scene.” You might just find him around the campfire this summer. “And I love camping and camp a lot in Colorado.”

Kris Roe (The Ataris) loses it, plays rest of show solo

The Ataris

At their show last night in Asbury Park, The Ataris frontman Kris Roe reportedly had a violent outburst on-stage during their performance of "Your Boyfriend Sucks."

During the song's bridge, Roe suddenly took off his guitar and threw it at the drummer, and began to throw pieces of the drum kit toward the rear of the stage, before announcing "Our drummer's fucking failing it tonight, I don't know what the fucking problem is but I'm gonna finish the set by myself," and calling the performance "fucking embarrassing." Roe proceeded to throw more pieces of the drum kit, and played audience requests on his own.

No word yet on the status of The Ataris, but Punknews has been told the band's drummer has quit and Roe will be playing the upcoming show in Providence, RI solo.

Things get real around 4:50.

The Ataris' Kris Roe Throws a Temper Tantrum and Trashes His Band's Gear on Stage

Remember the Ataris?  Yeah, neither do we.  OK, we're J/King. Despite our greatest efforts (opiates, hypnotism, sensory deprivation tanks), we remember the fucking Ataris. In case your own memory needs some jogging, here are all of the necessary hash tags: #pop-punk, #emo, #late 90s, #early 00s, #makeoutclub, #sanddimashighschoolfootballrules. Are we up to speed? Good. Now here's a play by play of the events that occurred Sunday when guitarist, lead vocalist, and all-around main Atari Kris Roe threw a destructive hissy fit while performing in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

0:00 - 0:05

Our saga begins with what appears to be a coupla bros kickin' out the pop-punk jams. What could possibly go wrong?

0:05 - 0:15 Remember when we asked what could possibly go wrong? When it comes to live music, there happen to be a few things. Here are some of them: drugs and/or inebriated band members, egos, technical difficulties, promoters, the audience, drink prices, and background music preventing conversation.  In this particular instance, we have a feeling every single one of those factors (and a few we might have forgotten, like bathroom attendants or people holding their cell phones up instead of a lighter) figured into the equation.

0:17 - 0:31

The official word for Mr. Ataris Himself -- who, BTW, is foaming at the mouth -- is that there is only so much fucking up he can take before it's his responsibility to trash as much gear as possible.

0:32 - 0:37

Which, of course, is a perfectly natural segue into trashing more gear.

After hurling the remainder of (his apparently astoundingly shitty) drummer's kit off the stage, Kris Roe tries to further explain how his bandmate's errors required that he rapidly destroy the man's equipment. Someone heckles, "Rock 'n' roll!" Lester Bangs spins in his grave so fast that his skeleton and fleshrot explodes up and outward from the cemetery's hollow ground in a mushroom cloud of corpse fire.
