You’ve been carefully planning your t ravel wardrobe for Paris , Buenos Aires, or Bali since the day you booked your flight. You even did the capsule travel wardrobe  to ensure each piece was absolutely perfect and when you arrive at your destination you breathe a sigh of relief because your hard work has paid off.

You packed flawlessly.

You gaze joyfully at your significant other and you can’t help but notice something terribly wrong. In fact, something disastrous. You forgot to think about mens travel style and how they choose their clothing.  Somehow , you’ve gone abroad with bozo the clown.

Ladies, has this happened to you?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to me a on my recent trip to India  ( sorry darling if you’re reading this ). My husband’s favorite color turned into a mish mash of blue hues in contrasting patterns and prints that just left me asking…how?

Mens Travel Style: Explained

As I looked around at other male travelers I found that my husband wasn’t the only one suffering from a bad case of overzealous print abuse. I told him my observations about mens travel style and asked him what was going on with these guys.

He didn’t dress like this in England so what happened on our travels?

He explained his male thinking: he walked into the store and picked up random pieces he liked but never stopped to think about pairing them together. He liked certain tank tops in prints and colorful swim shorts in other prints.

print swimming trunks

As he stopped to assess his outfit on the beach he realized that he chose various items because they looked good individually but the store hadn’t merchandised them together so he hadn’t thought about the final outfit.

This seems to be the most common issue with beach side male travel fashion. Swimming shorts tend to have fun colors and prints so this causes a bit of an outfit disaster if he didn’t consider the shirts he would be wearing with them.

Here are some packing tips to help him pack efficiently and stylishly:

Remind him to pack some neutrals

male travel style

shop the look

Prints are wonderful but gently suggest adding a few neutral pieces to balance out his wardrobe. Perhaps he can have patterned shirts and solid shorts or pants or vice versa. Mixing and matching prints and patterns seems to be the biggest culprit for tragic mens travel style.

Ask him if his shoes can be worn with all his bottoms

male travel style

Colorful shoes for men can totally amp up an outfit…or create shocking results. Suggest he minimize his luggage weight by choosing pairs that can mix and match with all his clothing. He doesn’t need six pairs of shoes, three versatile options are always a good amount.

Suggest a packing organizer to help keep his shirts wrinkle-free

 photo Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 6.38.27 AM_zpswhadq8os.png

Packing folders are wonderful to help clothing remain wrinkle-free and this is especially important for men that may be traveling with several pairs of button shirts. Alternatively, to help keep them organized, tell them about the new Pack Gear organizer . My husband absolutely loves it and it makes packing and unpacking a no-brainer.

Neutral layers are his best friend

male travel style

Button shirts or basic long sleeves act as the perfect light layers when the weather cools. Suggest they choose a neutral color that matches all their tops so it can be worn with everything. This is especially important if you’ll have limited access to laundry.

How about packing a hat?

male travel style

Hats are a great way to help hide lazy hair days and also avoid packing too much hair product. Instead of a baseball cap, why not suggest a newsboy cap or fedora. Simple mens travel style.

Decant toiletries into smaller containers

I’ve noticed that men are less likely to consider the amount of product they’ll actually use on a trip and opt to pack their full size products. Share your insightful tips on the best travel containers and show them they can easily pack only what they need instead of the whole thing.

FYI: his doesn’t work with shaving cream.

LOL–the intro is right on! Planning a trip to the Middle East next year so trying out your tips for me but also for him…hopefully, with enough planning ahead we can find some good options that he likes! Thanks

Phebe

If only my husband would let me shop for him……..

It seems it would be easy to pack just ten items for a man, right? A few tees or polo shirts, a sweater or two, one or two pair of shorts and a pair of jeans.

No, my husband insists on taking numerous copies of everything, never washing by hand, and then wearing only half of what he packed to begin with. His luggage is always bigger than mine, yet he always looks like an older version of a slightly messy three year old.

He finally learned to carry only smaller containers of liquids after having items confiscated at airports, over and over again.

Hmmmm. Maybe I should just send him this article!!!

alex

My husband is the same! But since I don’t have to carry his stuff, it’s his problem if he overpacks 😉

MEISSOUN

My boyfriend packed light long before I did and he fortunately has good fashion sense. But I totally know what you are talking about regarding the men in too many prints and colors! I wonder if packing websites for guys address this 😉

Not sure if they do, but they should 🙂

Read more: Learn How Men's Health Tests Products

After thorough hands-on testing, our editors have reviewed the 18 best men's travel pants below, including notes on their specs, performance, comfort, and any cons we found. When showing up in sweatpants or joggers won’t do, and wearing chinos or jeans on a long trek leaves your lower half feeling suffocated, these best men's travel pants will save the day.

This slim-fit travel trouser has all the hallmarks of your go-to office chinos but with twice the functionality and comfiness factors. Really, a chino that moves like a jogger but looks like a pair of grown-up pants is no wonder Everlane's hero item. And this was in fact handpicked to be tested by our Fashion Director Ted Stafford and then fitted on Bullet Train action star Andrew Koji . Why? Because it will move you from the tarmac to the resort without losing a second of relaxation, courtesy of the spandex four-way stretch that we found was so movement-friendly that we were able to squat and even jog a bit in them with ease. Coupled with a business-casual veneer, these chinos won us over with a versatility that's perfect for traveling, working in the office, or going about your everyday life in a chino style.

After testing it out by wearing these chinos to the office and to travel by flight, our favorite part of Everlane's performance chinos is its sweat-wicking and quick-drying capabilities. I even wore them on hot summer days to stroll under the sun, and the fabric was able to keep my legs feeling cool and dry. Lastly, although the fit leans slim, it hasn’t stifled or smothered the beefy thighs of our testers.

What Do Experts Say? " Everlane’s chino is comfortable to wear for all-day work, parties, or formal events. Plus, it is made from four-way stretchable fabric that prevents it from wear and tear. It is also considered to be a technical pant option because of its sweat-wicking and quick-drying features ," says Susan Gagnon, designer at Costumes Heaven .

Having thoroughly tested Lululemon's ABC pants, we found them to be the comfiest pants to stay classy in our everyday life. Really, its comfort is second to none: with sweat-wicking, quick-drying fabric, amplified four-way stretch, wrinkle resistance, and a comfortable ABC (Anti-Ball Crushing) design, the athleisure brand has managed to infuse its activewear innovation into a classic pant style geared toward everyday life.

Even though they’re partially made with polyester (which isn’t a breathable or stretchy fabric), the main material, called Elastomultiester, comes to save the day. In my experience wearing these, the fabric breathes and wicks away sweat like a beast, and the four-way stretch has made them my go-to pants for commuting to work in the summer. My favorite part is also how light and soft the fabric feels, which is why I always make sure to pack a pair of ABCs for when I’m flying away for a few days.

In fact, I was able to wear these pants multiple days in a row after owning them since 2020, and their stretchy performance has never let me down once. My favorite part about these pants is the anti-ball-crushing tech which I tested out to be a gusset at the crotch and thigh areas that helps relieve tension while walking. Style-wise, while the ABC looks more casual than regular chinos since it's made without cotton, meaning no-brainer versatility as summer pants, spring pants, khaki pants, travel pants, office pants, casual pants... You get the gist.

All in all, Lululemon's ABC pants are what guys have always hoped to find in their everyday slacks, giving you unrestrictive movement and all-day comfort without compromising on an elevated style.

Since launching in 2013, Vuori has been producing versatile pants that you can wear practically anywhere. Case in point: their elastic waist Ripstop pant, which features a modern slim cut and super soft fabric that's perfect for working from home, or trekking to the airport.

Created using Vuori’s Dura Terra ripstop fabric that features a two-way stretch, we found in our testing that these lightweight travel pants with a 33-inch inseam are issued with a gusset for extra roominess too. Their modern and straight-fit cut has let me dress them up or down as I pleased. We also found it to be quite breathable and work well as summer pants.

These pants also have the same tapered style that our testers love, but offer more room to move around despite being a slim fit. The cotton and elastane fabric is lightweight and breathable, and has helped our testers remain comfortable even while being in hot weather for hours. However, the real star is the brand's DuraTerra™ tech in the fabric: a material for active guys that can be sported all day long, for all sorts of activities, thanks to its two-way stretch flexibility, durability, strength, and stain resistance. Hence, our testers have even worn these Vuori pants to hike and bike besides just commuting and running errands.

Not only is this one of the best summer pants we’ve ever tested, but it’s also one of the most versatile and rugged travel pants we’ve tried. Our gear editor, John Thompson, even sported these as hiking pants to the great outdoors to test them and came back singing more than a few praises. Firstly, they’re made of nylon, and one thing about nylon is that it’s going to perform: really, the lightweight activewear fabric is breathable, moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and has a light natural stretch that is now enhanced with 6% of spandex in these pants. Basically, these pants have ventilation and quick-drying in spades.

Let’s talk more about that stretch: our testers found that the fabric thoroughly and easily moved with our legs in our hiking and commuting tests. It's safe to say we love them both on and off the trail, as everyday pants or tough outdoor pants.

Also, a note on how they wear as summer pants: even when the sun is blazing, our legs never felt searing or humid in these slacks. And since the fabric is also treated with UPF 50 protection against sunlight, we wear them outdoors to travel in by default.

Sure, cargo pants fell out of fashion in the last couple of years, but with the emergence of the gorpcore trend embracing all things utilitarian, it’s safe to say they’re back—and looking better than ever.

These cargo pants combine style and functionality seamlessly, courtesy of their performance build. Crafted in a unique knit material, they offer unmatched stretch and mobility for any occasion, making them as comfortable as sports pants but as stylish as casual wear. We also love how they are able to retain their shape wear after wear, wash after wash. The neat built-in UV protection also has let our testers enjoy activities out in the sun worry-free all day long. One tester says he loves how these have stretch and flexibility for hours to keep up with the movement, and how the elastic waistband has always let him ensure a perfect, comfortable fit.

Lastly, with these pants, you can say goodbye to damp discomfort thanks to their quick-drying capabilities that keep moisture at bay, allowing you to stay dry and fresh throughout your pursuits. The fit is roomy above the knees and tailored below, which is versatile for working out and going out.

The brand that specializes in creating functional basics made good with these pants crafted from a high-tech fabric that’s built to brave the elements. The blend of tough polyester and spandex renders the fabric extra rugged and even weather-resistant, to the extent that in our testing, one wearer found it to be water-repellent on rainy days and stain-resistant during accidental coffee spills.

However, according to him, the best part about these travel pants by Mack Weldon isn't just how resilient it is, but also how convenient and comfortable it is too. The back-ribbed ankle cuffs, welt zip pockets, and belt loops in front of and behind the elastic waistband are neat additions, allowing him to get a personalized fit. The spandex stretch in the fabric also optimizes flexibility and mobility, allowing us to move freely and comfortably in any situation; the natural quick-drying property has also kept our wearer fresh and dry even during intense activities in our testing.

While as joggers, these aren't as soft or lounging-friendly as your usual go-tos, we do love Mack Weldon's intelligent design like the stealth zip pockets that offer secure storage while maintaining a streamlined look.

These sweatpants-like travel pants are one of our testers' perennial favorites: according to him, not only do they boast the comfort and softness of sweatpants, but they also are and look versatile for just about everything from flights to working out.

With an elastic drawstring waistband to snug them up just right, and a trouser-like silhouette, we felt that Public Rec's travel pant is as comfortable as your favorite collegiate sweats, yet look like dress pants or office pants for work, thanks to a slim silhouette. You won't be embarrassed to sport these in public. This stylish alternative to the normal sweatpant blows the most comfortable jeans out of the water, and sports tapered legs to help show off your sneakers too.

Our testing also shows that they're truly the all-powerful trousers since they're made with a unique blend of nylon and spandex that feels like a second skin but also offer a natural combo of four-way stretch, moisture-wicking, and breathability. Our testers found that these pants feel like your favorite pair of soft, cozy sweatpants but look like your Monday office bottoms and work like your go-to workout pants. Using a drawstring instead of a button, you can wear this from your office to the gym to the bar—no changing needed.

Personally, I've worn these Public Rec pants for a long travel day that included multiple flights and layovers, from NYC to Denver. Needlessly to say, that was the most comfortable travel day I have ever had, thanks to these pants.

You can tell just by the look of Rhone's commuter pants that they’re comfortable, but let us confirm that for you. Rhone hits the nail on the head with these wrinkle-resistant commuter bottoms that are made from the brand’s premium Flex-Knit fabric. While the fabric is polyester, the material here is reworked to be stretchy and breathable.

The Flex-Knit fabric has the 4-way stretch and recovery of a Stretch Armstrong action figure, and there’s a gusset inserted into the seam to keep your below-the-belt boys breathing easy, all delivered in a timeless silhouette that you’ll keep in your outfit rotation for years to come. Best of all, the brand offers these pants in a ton of color options, both staples you can get year-round and limited-time seasonal colorways.

Designed for today’s ever-connected professional, the pants also boast a media pouch for your phone and a security zipper pocket for your cardholder. In our testers, one wearer also can’t get enough of how sleek it looks with a polo shirt or how comfortable it fits even on the go. However, the only qualm is that the waistband isn't as stretchy and flexible as we'd like it to be.

Columbia’s Flex ROC Pants in a regular fit look just as relaxed in town as they do on a hiking trail. Add to the mix the brand’s Omni-Shade sun protection and multi-purpose pockets and you’re good to go pretty much anywhere.

One tester took these hiking pants to test them in the backcountry and mountains and came back singing more than a few praises: according to him, these are made of naturally breathable, soft, and moisture-wicking cotton. Then, there’s the stretch plus a comfy regular fit that gave him enough room and mobility.

Off-the-trail-wise, we’ve worn them as everyday pants before even in the office, and no one has batted an eye. We also love their utility features like the multi-functional pockets and a zip-up security pocket that keep our essentials and valuables safe and readily accessible.

The Patagonia Skyline Traveler Pant is equipped for the office, trail and travel. Made from a nylon-spandex blend, this pair offers four-way stretch for extra mobility, and a water-repellent shell to keep rain at bay. Our testers compared the feeling of these pants to that of cozy loungewear, but also stylish enough to wear in the city. We also appreciate the zippered thigh pocket to stash any valuables such as credit cards or keys that could get lost in transit.

Alo Yoga Day and Night Pant

Day and Night Pant

Alo’s athleisure are comfortable and stylish enough to wear to most errands and casual outings. Take the Day and Night pant. It has a closer fit for a dressier vibe, and there's a hint of stretch for that feels like a breeze to move in. Plus, the performance woven fabric is breathable, moisture-wicking and designed to resist wrinkles.

Our testers have worn these pants from the plane to dinner and still felt fresh. Even on warmer days, these pants don’t cause you to break a sweat, which is a testament to its breathability. The price is higher than most travel pants, but this pair has enough durability to last quite some time without any signs of fading or piling, based on our testing. Another bonus: it’s a fresh take on the classic, four-pocket pant style, which also comes in longer inseams for taller guys.

Banana Republic Brushed Traveler Cargo Pant

Brushed Traveler Cargo Pant

Cargo pants have made a comeback in recent years with options that feel more refined and sleek. Banana Republic’s version does just that, merging style and functionality. We found this pair ideal for extensive days on the road. For maximum comfort, this slim pair is constructed with adjustable slider tabs at the waist to customize the fit. Despite the tailored cut, there’s an incredible amount of stretch for ease of movement.

Our favorite aspect of these pants is the ultra-soft feel of the fabric, which we wanted to keep on for days. We also love the ample amount of pocket space including at the front, back and at the lower sides. It feels super airy and moves seamlessly through the airport, so you don’t experience any heaviness that most baggy cargos can bear. The Brushed Traveler Cargo is thick enough to keep you warm, especially when you’re sitting in the chilly airplane cabin for hours.

Bonobos Extra Stretch Travel Jeans

Extra Stretch Travel Jeans

Just as you'd expect from Bonobos, the brand offers one of the most comfortable jeans on the market, available in every wash you could imagine, with fits that range from tailored to straight. These Extra Stretch Travel Jeans often happen to be a favorite by athletes and active guys who refuse to be tamed by heavy denim fabric.

According to our tester, these jeans in ultra-stretchy cotton merge the performance capabilities of the Bonobos name while maintaining the classic look of a staple pair of denim, making them a superb choice for stylish guys on the move. For instance, ever thought of going for a light jog in jeans? That seems implausible, but not impossible with these extra stretchy jeans that almost feel like sweatpants according to our tester.

Tyler Sellers , a fitness coach and professional athlete, is stoked by Bonobos' versatile offerings. "They produce high-quality clothing in more sizes than most other manufacturers... Bonobos offers all cuts, sizes, and materials on a single product page so you can quickly choose whatever you believe will work best for you," he says. That is also to say you’ll love the fit, four-way stretch, and classic look of these travel jeans, so make room in your closet to stock up on a few pairs.

What Do Experts Say? " What I love about Bonobos is how they cater to any body shape. Their original stretch chino is not only a well-constructed item, but is at a budget price point as well. When shopping this piece keep in mind what fit will work best for your body shape. Larger thighs? Athletic fit is the option for you. Carry a little more weight around your midsection? Stick with the straight fit ," says personal wardrobe stylist Grace Thomas .

Ben Sherman 24/7 Motion Stretch Slim Chino

24/7 Motion Stretch Slim Chino

Old-school chinos were reliable business casual staples but didn't provide much comfort. A suite of forward-thinking labels—Ben Sherman among them—have updated the chino with athleisure-friendly features: stretchy waistbands and water- and wrinkle-resistant fabrics that hold up in all types of conditions without sacrificing style.

Having worn Ben Sherman’s chinos to travel in April and May 2023, I was impressed by how lightweight and smooth the fabric is. While it’s not traditional chino material, I like its nylon blend that is stretchy enough for a squat and sweat-wicking. I also found that while the fit is slim, it is not restricting, and all in all looks great enough for everyday wear as well as the office. At this price, it’s a bang for your buck.

Ben Sherman's chinos are a favorite among stylists, and it's easy to see why: they're made with the ideal bit of stretch, tapered to look sharp, and enhanced with a cotton-nylon blend that provides all-day-long softness. "What I love about Ben Sherman's Chino are their fit, cut, stretch, and a wide variety of colors," says celebrity stylist Lisa Marie Cameron who recommends going for the brand's unique colors to give you an elevated flare, or opting for classics that are easy to pair with your daily wear. "You can't go wrong choosing Ben Sherman's chinos because they are suitable for any occasion. From work to meetings, to date night, to weddings, and everything in between," she highlights. "All it takes is your favorite color, adding your own touch of style and you're ready to tackle the day with whatever you have planned."

Madewell Athletic Slim Jeans

Athletic Slim Jeans

After you’ve nailed your comfort on the fit, the next step is to go after other kinds of comfort—softness, stretch, and coolness—in spades. These Madewell athletic fit jeans are our editor’s tried-and-true favorite: they feel incredibly soft, have more room in the seat and thigh areas for beefy quads but look tapered from the knees down, and move like joggers when worn on the go but still look tailored and elevated; they’re also built with moisture-wicking temperature-regulating tech to keep your legs dry.

Overall, Madewell developed their COOLMAX denim blend to be far more breathable, flexible, and comfortable than regular 100% cotton denim. All three of these properties make them ideal travel pants. You get the look and function of a good pair of jeans that feel as comfortable as track pants.

Brooks Brothers Stretch Advantage Chino® Pants

Stretch Advantage Chino® Pants

Despite being one of the oldest menswear brands, Brooks Brothers' Advantage Chino® pants have the most modern design we've ever tested, from spandex stretch to cotton twill softness to a wrinkle-resistant fabric to five different fits that cater to just about every guy. Marcos Martinez , a lifestyle influencer, verifies how these pants meet all the demands in chinos. "The chinos should have a flexible waistband to give comfort and breathing room around the waist. The material should be mostly cotton twill and part spandex for flexibility," says Martinez.

If you're concerned that a legacy menswear label like Brooks Brothers decided to go for a more modern, performance-minded fabric with stretch for its chinos, we found that not only did they give us a perfect fit right off the shelf, but they also felt incredibly comfortable and have managed to stay crisp for almost a year—far better than chinos made with full. The touch of stretch and flexibility especially helped our tester wear them to travel or commute throughout the day, and the overall elegant look kept us looking sharp. Plus, with enough fits and sizes for anything from extra slim to extra large, whatever your body type is, rest assured that Brooks Brothers' chinos have you covered.

L.L.Bean Venture Stretch Five-Pocket Pants

Venture Stretch Five-Pocket Pants

A pair ideal for anyone who spends an equal amount of time at the office as they do in the great outdoors—and travels tons to get there. These stretchy and hard-wearing L.L.Beans can repel water yet still offer ample smartness for business days.

Roark Layover 2.0 Pants

Layover 2.0 Pants

Roark’s travel pants are constructed from a blended stretch canvas and feature a ventilated back yoke-mesh panel. Then there are all the compartments: two large zipped front pockets with inner storage sleeves, two buttoned back pockets, and a super-handy stash pouch at the rear for your phone.

How to Choose the Best Men's Travel Pants

commerce breaker

Comfort, mobility, and a nice fit are key elements to be on the lookout for when finding the best men's travel pants.

Fabric: The whole point of travel pants is that they should look like regular chinos or slacks while feeling like athletic pants when you're wearing them. They should be lightweight, flexible, and breathable. That means you want to look for a fabric blend that has some stretch in it and at least half polyester or Tencel fiber in the mix. Some brands will put cotton or wool in the mix to keep the business look and shape. The one thing to avoid is when brands go overboard with the stretch. If there is more than 10% elastin or spandex in the mix, your pants are going to look too casual and won't hold a proper shape.

Performance: Features like quick-drying and moisture-wicking are essential for comfort, keeping your legs cool and dry throughout your traveling. Wrinkle resistance in travel pants also helps you maintain a neat appearance without ironing. If you're traveling to a sunny destination, consider travel pants with built-in UV protection to shield your skin from harmful rays. And if you're packing travel pants, make sure the ones you get are lightweight.

Stretch: Travel pants are known for their ability to move with our legs and cater to our movement, so stretch is essential—whether it's a natural stretch or courtesy of a few percentages of elastane, spandex, or lycra.

Fit: Good travel pants should have a business-casual look. You want them to fit like a pair of cotton chinos or wool slacks. This means whatever style of fit you wear in those pants, you want the same fit in your travel pants. There may be a compulsion to go slimmer since it's a stretch pant. If you wear a straight-leg chino, do get slim-fit travel pants. If you wear slim-fit jeans, don't get skinny-fit travel jeans. Stick to your go-to fit.

Look: A lot of brands have gotten into the travel pants game in the past few years which means there is a lot of variety in looks out there. It's important to remember that your travel pants are a replacement for regular pants and should look the part. Stick to traditional colors like Navy, Black, Gray, Olive, and Khaki. You want them to be versatile and understated. Avoid the aqua blues and dusty oranges.

Pockets: While travel pants should look like normal pants, their functionality for ease on the go is key. Since you'll likely carry your travel and everyday essentials with you while you wear travel pants, you want to make sure you have enough deep pockets because you need to carry stuff on the go and don't want to worry about anything falling out when you sit down. Travel pants with hidden or zippered pockets for added security are also worth the buy.

10 Travel Essentials for Men To Make any Trip in 2024 Easier

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Travel essentials for men take on all shapes, sizes, and forms. Ranging from luggage to travel clothing to must-have personal items, the top travel essentials ensure you have everything you need to stay comfortable and, more importantly, look good on the go. But does every trip call for the same travel essentials?

Not necessarily.

What I’ve found over the past five years of traveling full time is that travel essentials vary from person to person. Many men may need to pack a foil travel shaver , while others are fine with a plastic hotel razor. Some guys can’t survive a flight without a travel pillow, while other dudes just sleep on a sweatshirt .

Regardless of personal preference, I’ve rounded up the best travel items that prioritize function over anything. When it’s time to pack your bags, these are the top ten travel essentials I recommend for any man.

Key Takeaways

After asking all my frequent flyer friends and reviewing what those on the internet had to say (and, as always, it’s a lot!) I’ve come up with this list. In terms of the top travel essentials for men , you’ll be hard pressed to find an item as practical as a sturdy backpack. The Tropicfeel Shell Backpack expands to suit different trip lengths, making it a versatile packing option for the rest of your gear.

It’s also worth investing in a travel wallet to stay organized and noise canceling headphones , which are a must-have for long journeys.

Keep reading to discover all of the other items I deem the best travel essentials for men.

  • Buying Considerations

Why You Should Trust Us

Final verdict, 1. best overall: tropicfeel shell backpack.

Why It’s Great: The Tropicfeel Shell backpack is a travel essential you’ll take on every trip – near or far, long or short. It’s one of the most practical backpacks on the market, and I’m an especially big fan because the weatherproof body transforms from 20 to 42 liters without batting an eye.

Because of its versatile nature, it’s ideal for any kind of travel, whether a quick road trip to a neighboring state or a journey spanning several continents. It has multiple attachment points all over the bag, and even a packable kangaroo pouch on the bottom for travel shoes or wet clothes. Use this in place of weekender bags or duffels for men to keep your hands free.

How to Use It: Outfitted with unparalleled organization, there’s space for everything in the Shell backpack, including a designated 17” laptop sleeve. There’s a chest and hidden hip belt to balance heavy loads, and to really make the most of this comfy backpack, pair it with accessories like Tropicfeel’s wardrobe system, the magnetic toiletry bag, or a camera cube.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: While this backpack has lots to love, it can be improved with more padding on the straps and hip belt to increase comfort.

2. Best Travel Wallet: Lundi Leather Passport Wallet

Why It’s Great: As someone who travels internationally multiple times a year, a passport wallet is one of the top travel essentials. Sure, it protects your passport, but also has room for credit cards, a boarding pass, and receipts. This option from Lundi is my personal favorite because instead of having a bifold design that makes the passport hard to get to, it has a slip pocket with a pull strap for quick access. No more fiddling with your cover in the immigration line.

How to Use It: Load up this supple leather wallet with your passport in the main compartment and cards in the front slots. Pull gently on the cotton tab to access your passport, which will slide it up. When you receive your boarding pass, tuck it into the back pocket for safekeeping.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: The only dealbreaker with this item is it probably isn’t necessary unless you’re traveling internationally. The large center pocket is great for holding travel documents, but you can likely stick with your regular wallet if you’re traveling domestically or by land.

3. Best Headphones: Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling Headphones

Why It’s Great: Out of all the headphones on the market, these are the top travel essentials for men. They have a noise canceling option, unmatched sound quality, and Bluetooth for cordless listening. However, what really makes them great is when you’re ready to throw on a movie, there’s a cable that allows you to connect them to non Bluetooth compatible devices (hint: in-flight entertainment systems).

How They Feel: As far as comfortable headphones go, these are top tier. The over the ear design is heavily padded, giving solid cushioning for the ears without sacrificing sound quality. I’m pretty sensitive to pressure on my head and I’ve found that these are light enough to prevent discomfort, even if worn over a long period of time.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: These Bose QuietComfort headphones are an older model. But as someone who has tried the most recent pair, this earlier rendition reigns supreme in terms of comfort and sound.

4. Best Laptop Case: Comfyable Slim Laptop Sleeve

Why It’s Great: When it comes to travel essentials, slim is superior. This laptop sleeve will keep a MacBook safe from harm without taking up precious space in a bag. The faux leather design is sleek and stylish, while the soft felt interior protects the computer from damage while on the go.

How to Use It: This laptop sleeve couldn’t be any easier to use. Simply slip the computer inside and tuck it in your bag. There are no niggly straps or buttons, making it easy to access your laptop as soon as you need it.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: If you’re looking for extra protection, you may want to opt for a more robust computer case with additional padding or a hard shell. This case is also for Mac laptops, rather than PCs.

5. Best Travel Razor: Manscaped The Handyman

Why It’s Great: No, you do not need to take your entire shaving set up with your traveling. Yes, there is a worthy alternative. As far as travel essentials go, you’ll likely get the most use out of this Manscaped shaver than anything else on this list. With a compact design specially created for portability, this is the mobile man’s best friend. If you’re traveling for business, this is one essential you won’t want to forget (together with your travel size cologne as well).

How to Use It: Use this foil shaver the same way you would any other electric razor. It’s waterproof so you can rinse off any stray hairs, and has an hour of run time before needing a USB-C charge. When you finish your grooming, snap the magnetic cover on and throw it back in your bag.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: Like most electric razors, it’s a bit finicky and can be a bit loud. If you have sensitive skin, you may experience some redness after use.

6. Best neck pillow: Huzi Infinity Pillow

Why It’s Great: It’s about time the classic neck travel pillow got an upgrade. I love the Infinity Pillow because it can be used in many different ways to sleep on the go. It’s lightweight and the best headrest for long rides, flights, or grimey hotel rooms.

How it Feels: Made from bamboo fabric, this pillow is super breathable and highly adjustable to be exactly what you need it to be throughout your travels. Whether you wrap it around your neck or lean against it in a window seat, it’s ultra plush and supremely comfortable. No matter how you use it, it feels a whole lot better than the traditional U-shape headlock.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: The Infinity Pillow is definitely pricer than classic neck pillows. But you can’t put a price tag on a comfortable headrest. Trust me on this one.

7. Best Manicure Set: Aceoce Travel Manicure Set

Why It’s Great: Nice nails on the go are a must, especially if you’re traveling for business. God forbid you extend a nail bitten hand to a client… Yikes. This manicure set is among the best travel essentials because it’ll keep you looking sharper than a hangnail. It has seven tools in a TSA approved compact case and even includes facial care tools in addition to the nail set.

How to Use It: Whip out this bad boy any time your nails or eyebrows need a little TLC. There are two sized clippers – one for fingers and one for toes, in addition to a nail cleaner and a file. If your brows are in need of a touch up, use the tweezers to shape and the scissors to give them a trim.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: Some reviewers report that the nail clippers aren’t as sharp as some others, but they do the trick in a pinch (literally).

8. Best Dopp Kit: Purevave Compact Toiletry Bag

Why It’s Great: Dopp kits come in all shapes and sizes, but I’m partial to this one because of its compact nature. However, just because it’s compressed doesn’t mean it has a limited capacity. This toiletry bag has an insane amount of space in a tiny package. There are multiple compartments, a designated dental pouch, and an extra secure hanging strap. Given that it’s only a little larger than an iPhone, it’s a really remarkable piece of travel gear.

How to Use It: Load up and go, baby. There are tons of pockets in this dopp kit to keep toiletries in their rightful place. Elastic bands lash down small items like floss, while the front mesh pockets make it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for. There’s even a back pocket for quick access – keep your razor here to nab stray hairs without opening up the entire case.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: This is definitely a dopp kit for minimalists. It has just enough space for all the essentials without much else. So if you’re traveling with your entire bathroom cabinet, you may need something larger.

9. Best Carry On Luggage: Tumi Expandable Carry On

Why It’s Great: As a full time traveler, I have used pretty much every luggage brand under the sun. The only one that didn’t wimp out on me? This Tumi roller bag. As one of the best luggage brands , this bag is dependable, expandable, and carry-on compliant. Not to mention it has all the extra bells and whistles like a TSA lock, built in USB port and internal compression straps. It’s lightweight, spacious, and easy to maneuver with four spinner wheels, ensuring the bag moves with you instead of having to drag it behind you.

How to Use It: The interior of this carry on luggage has multiple zippered compartments to easily segment your belongings, while the compression straps ensure nothing is sticking out when it’s time to zip it up. Use it for years to come without struggle – this bag is made to last.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: This carry on is definitely on the pricier side, but you’re paying for quality. That said, it’s worth noting that if you purchase the bag off Amazon, rather than from Tumi directly, you’ll need to pay for the warranty.

10. Best Travel Pants: Lee Extreme Motion Cargo Pant

Why They’re Great: Nothing is worse than wearing jeans on long travel days, which is why it’s worth having a pair of designated travel pants in your wardrobe. This pair has a cargo style with front and back pockets, along with zippered cargo pockets on each leg to keep valuables stowed safely. They’re great for exploring new cities in comfort without looking like a slob, and have a really reasonable price point given the quality and functionality.

How They Feel: These Lee cargo pants look like slacks but feel like sweats – even the waistband is designed with extra stretch. As a men’s travel essential, these pants have a sophisticated straight leg, with a super soft, stretchy material. With seven colorways to choose from, these are the only pants you’ll ever want to wear, on the plane and off.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: Since the fabric is a solid mid-weight, these pants are a bit light for cold weather wear, but are a dependable option if you’re looking for men’s stretch pants to travel in.

Travel Essentials for Men: What to Consider

Type of traveller.

The type of traveler majorly impacts what qualifies as travel essentials for men. For example, a barebones traveler may opt to forego a travel wallet for men or neck pillow, while a more upscale traveler might enjoy these items.

Additionally, casual jet-setters will make good use of comfortable items like men’s travel pants. But business travelers will likely focus on appearance-based essentials like nice attire, a travel razor, and a manicure set.

As you can see, the type of traveler will impact what is considered essential. It’s all about leaning into what makes the most sense for your unique purposes.

Trip Length

Trip length will also impact travel essentials for men, because there’s no point in packing a passport wallet for quick domestic travel. If you’re going away for a couple of days, you can often get away with the basics like a backpack, laptop sleeve, and headphones. Since you won’t be gone long, you can probably leave essentials like a travel razor and manicure set behind.

However, if you’re going on a lengthy trip or a well deserved vacation, you’ll want to pack all of the essentials on this list in order to stay comfortable and well-groomed when away from home.

Finally, it’s worth thinking about how travel essentials factor into your personal comfort while on the go. Travel days are brutal enough as they are, so it’s always wise to make them as easy on yourself as possible.

This likely includes investing in comfortable essentials like a sturdy backpack and breathable travel pants. Additionally, items like noise canceling headphones and a soft neck pillow will make your trip much more comfortable, making them choice travel essentials.

Over the past five years, I’ve traveled to five continents, over thirty countries, and more cities than I can count. Because of the high amount of movement in my life, I’ve had to be conscious of what I pack. Since I live out of a backpack and don’t have room for everything, I’ve had to get serious about travel essentials.

Drawing on my own personal experience, the advice of my boyfriend (who’s been my travel companion for half a decade), and the other voyaging men in my life, I’ve been able to determine the best travel essentials in hopes of helping guys really understand what they need to be successful and comfortable on the go.

At the end of the day, you can have all of the travel essentials in the world, but nothing will serve you quite as well as a backpack. My top pick is the expandable Tropicfeel Shell Backpack , which has gear attachment points, a roomy interior, and padded carry straps. It’s also worth bringing along a travel wallet and noise canceling headphones , no matter the trip length of destination.

The must have travel essentials for a man include a dependable backpack, a passport wallet, noise canceling headphones, versatile trousers, and a dopp kit. If you have some extra room, you can also bring along extras like a laptop case, manicure set, travel razor, and lightweight pillow.

Travel Essentials for Men – How to Pack Perfectly for Any Trip

Love to travel but have no idea what to pack? Don’t worry. I created this ultimate list of travel essentials for men based on my own travels in more than 50 countries. Read on to make packing hassle-free.

Choose Your Ideal Travel Backpack or Luggage

Get an anti-theft day pack, invest in packing cubes, gather the essential men’s travel clothing, choose the right travel shoes, essential men’s outerwear for travel, travel toiletries list for men, essential travel gadgets, travel safety gear for men, essential travel accessories for men, what men need in their carry-on, things you don’t need to bring, a final word about travel essentials for men.

This article may contain affiliate / compensated links. For full information, please see our  disclaimer  here.

Let’s admit it.

Guys tend to be a little sloppy when it comes to packing. Most of us spend 15 minutes the night before our flight, throwing a bunch of random items in a suitcase and calling it done.

In fact, the chances are that more women will read this guide than men. And then they’ll pass it on to the man in their lives to encourage them to pack better.

Is that how you got here?

No matter who you are or how you got here, this guide is going to help you pack more efficiently and effectively.

I’ve been nomadic for almost 7 years now and before that, I travelled a lot for work. In that time, I’ve taken packing from a haphazard night-before rush and turned it into a science.

stephen in a street in china

Now I know exactly what constitutes a travel essential for men and what items have no place in a suitcase.

In fact, any time security opens my suitcase at the airport they look at me and say something like, “Wow. Impressive.” I nod and casually respond, “I travel full-time. It’s gotta be organised.”

In this (massive) guide, I’ll walk you through what’s in my suitcase and help you decide what should be on your travel packing list.

I also recommend my favourite travel gear, most of which is eco-friendly and vegan because I want my (and your) trips to be as earth-friendly as possible!

Travel Essentials for Men

Don’t miss our guides to travel gifts for men , travel essentials for women , and our complete guide to minimalist packing !

pack light carry on luggage

Travel packing, and travelling itself, is so much easier if you have the right suitcase or backpack for the job. So the first step in gathering your travel essentials is to assess your luggage situation. If you already have a serviceable bag, that’s great! Save money and the environment by using what you’ve got.

If not, then it’s time to figure out which travel bag is right for you.

What Kind of Luggage Do You Need?

Luggage is a personal thing, like underwear or hats. What’s right for you might be all kinds of wrong for the next guy.

You’re going to want to pick your luggage based on a few factors, like:

  • Your travel style (luxury? backpacker? or somewhere in between?)
  • Your fitness level (can you wander comfortably around a city carrying your bag on your back?)
  • Your destination (you’re going to want a very different bag for a trip to New York than one to Cambodia)

If you are going to be mostly roughing it, staying in hostels, visiting rural areas, or doing almost anything in Southeast Asia, then a travel backpack is your best bet. It’s much easier to hop on a bus or a tuk tuk with a backpack and you’ll thank me when you’re making your way down cobbled streets, up multiple staircases, or through packed train stations.

On the other hand, if you plan to stay in upscale hotels, travel mostly to cities, or travel for work, a hard-sided suitcase wheelie is a better choice.

man in suit rolling suitcase behind

If your travel style is somewhere in between, a travel bag that converts from a suitcase to a backpack gives you the best of both worlds.

I travel with a hard-sided suitcase because it protects my stuff, both from my own carelessness and the rough treatment from baggage handlers and taxi drivers. Sometimes I wish it converted to a backpack as well, but those moments are rare.

What Size of Luggage Do You Need?

Most people think that you need more room in your suitcase the longer your trip is going to be. Totally not true. I pack almost the same amount of stuff for a week on the road or for a year.

For almost all travellers, I recommend a carry-on size bag around 35–40L. This is big enough to fit in all your essentials but not so big that you’re tempted to pack a hundred unnecessary extras that will weigh you down.

Plus, carrying a carry-on means you’re out of the airport faster than all those other fools who checked their bag (plus you saved some essential cash for beer).

The Travel Luggage We Recommend

hard-sided carry-on suitcase

I’m pretty rough on my gear, so I carry the Haupttstadtkoffer Alex 20 , a durable hard-sided suitcase. It took me years of experimenting to find it and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The best part is that when the wheels or handle breaks (as they inevitably do on wheelie luggage — especially if you’re a full-time traveller) I can order replacement parts from the manufacturer that are super easy to install. Because of that, this suitcase has lasted me far longer than any other piece of luggage I’ve owned before. Seriously.

black soft sided suitcase with orange handles

If I had to trade it in, I would get the same suitcase Jane has. It’s the Standard Luggage convertible suitcase which is a soft-sided suitcase that quickly converts into a backpack.

My hard-sided suitcase is great in Europe but in Asia, I’m pretty jealous when Jane can just swing her bag over her back and take off down the dusty street or easily climb the seemingly endless stairs up to our guesthouse room.

If you need to select a new travel backpack or luggage, make sure to read our complete guide to the best minimalist backpacks for travel .

cyclist drinking water with backpack nearby

Alongside your suitcase, you’re going to need a small backpack that you can load up with your carry-on essentials for the plane and use as a daypack when you’re travelling.

Since we go so many places where pickpockets roam, I covet Standard Luggage’s Anti-Theft Daypack (Jane has one and it’s great). It has an RFID pocket for your passport, a laptop sleeve, lots of zippered compartments for keeping things organized, and a hidden zipper to foil thieves. It also looks nicer than your average backpack, meaning you can carry it almost anywhere without feeling like a bum.

orange packing cube with pants inside

If you’re the type of guy who gets dressed by rummaging through your laundry basket for the least smelly option, you might not need packing cubes.

For those of us who are not barbarians, packing cubes are almost as essential to travel as money and a passport.

Without packing cubes, you waste precious exploration time trying to find your stuff amidst a jumble of toiletries, shoes, and clothes in your suitcase. Packing cubes keep all this stuff organized so it only takes seconds to locate clean socks or your sunglasses when you need them.

Packing cubes also make unpacking easy when you get to your destination. Just grab the cubes, stick them on a shelf or in a drawer, and then you’re good to go.

Packing Cubes We Recommend

packing cubes three white and green eagle creek

Back when I first started travelling, Eagle Creek packing cubes were just about the only ones available. My early packing cubes lasted through decades of travel. Sadly, they don’t make them like they used to. My newer Eagle Creek cubes are good but not as rugged as the old ones (but they are much lighter) and I have had a couple of zippers split after a couple of years of hard use.

These days there are tons of packing cubes out there and they all look pretty much the same.

packing cubes six orange gonex

Jane just got a set from Gonex that seem to be working well for her. Most cubes these days come in sets of 5 or 6, but you realistically only need a maximum of 4 medium ones to fit all your stuff in.

Sadly, we haven’t been able to find any widely available eco-friendly packing cubes. Great business idea for a budding entrepreneur!

What Should You Look for in Travel Clothes?

Trying to figure out exactly what you need and don’t need on any given trip can be a headache. After nearly 7 years of full-time travel, I’ve got my packing list pared down to the essentials. I wear every item in my suitcase on a regular basis and hardly ever find myself reaching for a piece of kit that’s not there.

When you start packing remember that every item you pack should be:

Comfortable — This is the top priority. Pants that pinch in the wrong places or shirts that leave you itchy and sweaty do not belong in your suitcase. But that doesn’t mean you just bring sweats and t-shirts either.

Stylish — Though your most comfortable clothes might be cargo shorts and old ratty t-shirts, there are lots of advantages to looking a little more presentable while travelling. The good thing is, there are plenty of men’s travel clothes that are comfortable and stylish at the same time.

stephen waiting for an elevator in russia

Versatile — Never bring an item you can only wear for one specific occasion (unless, of course, you’re travelling to a wedding or something). Pants, shorts, and shirts should be versatile enough that they work on the street, on the beach, and for a dinner out.

Durable — Travelling is tough on clothes, so go for fabrics that won’t rip or stain easily. If you’re a bit messy, packing darker colours will help hide any BBQ sauce drips or trail dirt.

Of course, the type of trip and your travel style will make a huge difference to what you pack.

A Quick Travel Clothing Packing List

Start with these essential travel clothes:

male travel style

3 or 4 quick-dry travel t-shirts — Like most guys, I wear t-shirts every day of my life. When travelling, that means I have to wash them out in the sink or shower every few days. Quick-dry shirts (these don’t have to be special tech material shirts, but shirts that simply dry quickly) make it easy to stay smelling good while you travel, and ensures they will be dry come morning.

If you’re in the market, Bluffworks makes a great anti-stink quick-dry t-shirt .

Long-sleeved button-up shirt — Sometimes a t-shirt just isn’t good enough. For these times, you need a great button-up shirt that will make you feel much more presentable and confident without sacrificing comfort. Try these ones from Bluffworks if wrinkle-free, quick-dry, and stylish sounds good to you.

kuhl essential travel pants for men

2 pairs of awesome travel pants — Good travel pants for guys can be hard to find. They need to be comfortable enough to wear on the plane, durable enough for a hike or bike ride, and look good enough that they’re OK to wear out to a restaurant or bar.

I just got a pair of Kuhl Renegade Radikl Aktion pants that are perfect for rainy days out and about. They’re made with water resistant technical fabrics which makes them comfortable when I’m on my bike or out for a hike — even if it starts to rain. But, they look more like chinos than technical travel pants, so I can still wear them to dinner without feeling like a caveman.

Find out more about these and my other favourite travel pants in my post about the best men’s travel pants for your trip.

1 pair of travel shorts — If you’re going somewhere hot, you’ll definitely need a pair of shorts in your bag. You might even want to just bring one pair of pants and bring a couple of pairs of shorts. Like travel pants, travel shorts should look good enough to wear out in the evening but also be rugged enough for days on the beach.

Sweatshirt or sweater — Thick hoodies and bulky sweaters are out for travelling. They’re comfortable, yeah, but they just take up way too much space in your suitcase. Instead, bring a thin sweatshirt to layer over whatever else you’re wearing. If you get one in black with a zipper up the front, you’ll be able to wear it even on dressier occasions.

3–5 pairs no-hassle quick-dry travel underwear — For whatever reason, underwear for dudes always seems to be super thick, which means they take ages to dry and they’re not always that breathable. If you’re looking for sweat-wicking quick-dry travel underwear, check out the Ex-Officio line of breathable, quick-dry underwear. They might cost a little more but they’ll probably be your new favourite underwear.

Blazer or jacket — If you’re travelling for work or just want to up your style game at times, then a suit jacket is probably essential. While I don’t really need one in my profession as a yoga teacher, sometimes I’m tempted to carry the Bluffworks blazer , which is designed to be stuffed into the bottom of a backpack and come out looking great.

It’s also breathable, lightweight, and machine washable. If you want something slightly less formal, the Bluffworks field jacket is also very cool and totally versatile.

These are the men’s essential travel clothes we recommend

Bluffworks travel clothes — From quick-dry t-shirts and button-up shirts to wrinkle resistant pants and jackets, Bluffworks makes reliable and stylish men’s travel clothes. Pants and jackets come with hidden zippered pockets to keep your valuables safe while you travel. Also, if you need to look good on the road, invest in a Bluffworks travel suit, which is anti-wrinkle, breathable, and machine washable!

Prana and Columbia travel pants — These two make some of the most reliable men’s travel pants on the market. They are perfect for guys who want to hike, bike, rock-climb and be active when they travel. Many of their pants feature technical fabric with UPF (UV ray) protection, multi-way stretch, and zippered pockets.

best lightweight walking shoes for travel vegan

Figuring out what shoes to pack for travel is one of the great mysteries of the universe.

Whatever travel shoes you pack, they need to cover almost every possibility, from walking miles along European city streets to hiking miles to the top of a volcano in Indonesia . It’s also nice to have a pair of shoes that will keep your feet cool in hot weather and a pair that doesn’t look terrible if you go out with friends (old or new).

After 7 years of full-time travel, I’ve settled on two essential pairs of shoes that I always need with me. Plus, I allow myself a bonus pair that is a luxury item for me.

The right travel shoes need to be:

Comfortable & worn in — This is the top priority. Don’t pack any shoes that you haven’t worn at least a half-dozen times. Getting a blister on holiday sucks. Don’t do it.

Versatile — Your main travel shoes should be ones you can wear almost anywhere without feeling like a total loser. Personally I take this to mean “no loud colours” but you be you.

Lightweight — When you’re walking more than 20,000 steps per day, every ounce counts. Lightweight shoes make things easier on your legs, ankles, and calves, while also helping you keep under those strict luggage weight limits.

These are the shoes in my suitcase

Lightweight walking shoes — If you want to go minimalist and only pack one pair of shoes, make them a pair of neutral-coloured ultra-comfortable lightweight walking shoes. I wear black Salomon XA Lite GTX shoes which they don’t make any more.

Next time I need shoes, I might try the Salomon Outbound hiking shoes which are waterproof, lightweight, and more stylish than your average trail shoe. They’re also non-leather, so no animals were harmed in their making!

Hot-weather sport sandals — My feet get hot, even in cold climates, so for Asia or hot summers anywhere, I need a pair of comfortable walking shoes that also have maximum airflow. I wear Keen Clearwater CNX which are lightweight, washable, and have enough support for city streets and medium intensity hikes.

Luxury casual shoe — My last pair of shoes is not strictly essential and if I was packing ultra-minimalist, I wouldn’t bring them. But, since I travel full-time, I give over some carry-on space to a pair of casual street shoes.

I’ve been wearing Feiyue shoes since I discovered them on a trip to Shanghai several years ago. They are comfortable, have a vintage sneaker style, are small enough to pack easily — and they are the shoes Shaolin monks wear. How cool is that? (They even make a special Shaolin all-black version!)

Your choice of jackets really depends on where you’re going, what season you’ll be there, and how long your trip is.

On a tropical vacation, you might be able to get away with no jacket at all. For a winter trip, of course you’ll need something warm and packable.

Since I travel full time, my jackets need to cover all weather possibilities, from winter in northern Norway to wet season in Vietnam.

These are the two jackets I carry:

winter jacket the north face thermoball vegan black

1. Packable insulated jacket — My North Face Thermoball jacket insulates me from the cold and is water repellent, keeping me warm and dry even in damp conditions. The jacket packs right into its own pocket, so when I’m not using it, it’s easy to stow away in my carry-on or suitcase. Plus, the insulation is synthetic, so no worries about the cruelty of down .

2. Lightweight rain jacket — When it gets really cold and wet outside, I bring out my lightweight rain jacket to add an extra layer of protection. I have the Showers Pass Men’s Elite 2.1, which is designed specifically for cycling, so is extremely waterproof and breathable. I love the under-arm zippers that give me extra breathability if I get too warm. If you’re not going cycling, try out the packable and waterproof North Face Venture 2 jacket or the Columbia Men’s Pouration jacket .

3. Ultimate travel blazer — If you’re going on a city trip, where you’ll be doing more bar crawling and less trail hiking, you can dress up your look with a blazer that’s specifically designed for travel.

The Bluffworks Gramercy Blazer is packable, machine washable, and wrinkle-resistant. It has a total of 7 inner pockets, some with zippers, some completely hidden, to keep everything safe, from your passport to your iPad (Seriously. That’s not a typo!). If you really want to step up your travel style game, you can also get the matching Gramercy pants .

toiletries travel bag blue green eagle creek pack-it system

Expert toiletry packing starts with the right toiletry bag. If you already have something serviceable, stick with it. But, if you’re looking for a new one, I highly recommend the Eagle-Creek Pack It Specter Tech toiletry kit . Jane got me this for Christmas about 5 years ago and it’s been the perfect addition to my suitcase.

While women tend to overpack when it comes to travel toiletries, men usually under-pack. It might be tempting to just throw your toothbrush in a bag and go. But, unless you rock an unreconstructed mountain man look, there are a few more things you’re going to need to keep feeling and looking your best while you travel.

Don’t forget the obvious stuff, like deodorant, a razor, toothpaste, floss, and a toothbrush.

Then consider packing these essential travel toiletries as well:

1. Bar soap and shampoo bar — We’re sick of the single-use plastic bottles that go along with shower soap and shampoo these days. Especially the little travel-sized ones, which are just a disaster for the environment. Instead, grab an all-natural bar of soap like Dr. Bronner’s All-One. I find that this works as soap and shampoo for me.

But if your hair needs a little extra help, grab a bar of shampoo, too. You can cut both in half and store them in a leak-proof mini tupperware container like I do. Leave the other half at home or keep it dry in your toiletry kit until you need it.

male travel style

2. Lip balm with SPF — Another item a lot of guys don’t usually use, lip balm with SPF is a travel essential because during travel you’ll be exposed to a lot more sun, wind, and harsh conditions that you are at home. Dry, cracked, sunburnt lips are the perfect way to ruin your trip — so slap on that balm anytime your lips feel a bit dry.

3. Use anywhere moisturizer with SPF — Even if you don’t use moisturizer at home, travel can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving it dry and itchy. Bring a bottle of moisturizer with SPF that you can put on your face every morning and use as needed on other rough spots.

4. GoToob travel bottles — Instead of buying mini travel-sized toiletries, which are a rip-off and a waste of plastic, get a set of reusable GoToob travel bottles. These bottles are seriously dope. They never leak no matter how much I put them through.

male travel style

5. Shaving oil — OK, this is probably only good for the less hairy dudes out there, like me. But, if you can’t really grow a full beard, shaving oil is genius. A small bottle will last you ages and you won’t need to carry shaving cream. How I had never heard of shaving oil before becoming a full-time traveller I don’t know.

One last note on toiletries. If you’re packing cologne, that’s fine, but dammit dudes, go easy. There’s nothing that turns people off faster than you smelling as though you’re just back from a swim in a vat of Eternity for Men.

vegan headphones marley

If guys under-pack our toiletries, we also usually overpack when it comes to gadgets. What can I say? It’s a sickness!

The thing about packing too many gadgets is that they weigh a LOT. Plus, they cost a lot, meaning you’ll spend more time than is necessary worrying about people stealing your precious gear.

To prevent this, just stick to the bare essentials when it comes to travel gadgets:

  • Phone & charger: Obviously the first and most important items. A good phone, set up properly, can be your compass, your map, your travel planner, your tickets, your entertainment and so much more. Don’t miss my list of essential travel apps below.
  • Power adaptor: For frequent travellers or multi-continent trips, get a universal adaptor that can accept any kind of plug and be inserted into any kind of plug. If you’re just heading to a single destination, then a smaller adapter specific for that country makes more sense.

noise cancelling headphones sony wh1000xm3

  • Headphones: About a year ago I got a set of Sony noise cancelling headphones which I credit with keeping me sane while I travel. I wear them on the plane, in the airport, on busses, in crowds, and when I’m trying to get to sleep at night.
  • Portable charger/power bank: Since phones are the new Leatherman (a million uses in one device), it’s pretty essential that you keep yours charged. Travel can use your battery more quickly, since you’ll be shooting videos and photos, listening to music, using maps and other apps, and probably watching videos more than normal. If you have any doubts about your phone battery’s lasting power, get a portable charger. I just got the RAVPower 18 W charger which is compact, charges super-fast and holds enough charge for two phones.

action camera video adventure dji osmo

  • Action camera: This is perfect for anyone who is going on an adventure and wants a video record to bring back home. I recently got the DJI Action Camera and it has transformed the way I shoot videos. The stabilization is incredible (even when I’m running it somehow manages to look smooth) and the huge wide angle is perfect for capturing all the action. It also takes a pretty great still shot when I need it to. Highly recommended!

The apps on my phone are as important as the device itself. These are my top 5 essential apps for travel:

screen grab of maps.me

1. Maps.me – This offline mapping app allows you to add your own pins. I add pins for my hotel, restaurants I want to visit, useful services like banks and laundry, and the must-see tourist attractions. With that done, I can confidently wander wherever I want and check back in with the map when I want to get unlost.

2. Apple Wallet or Android equivalent – Now that much of the world offers payment by tap, my Apple Wallet is an essential app. I love not having to take my real wallet out to pay for things, which greatly reduces the chances that I might lose it. Apple Wallet also stores all my travel documents (boarding passes, hotel confirmations, transport tickets) so I no longer have to keep track of a bunch of paper. Plus you can also toggle a switch within the app and use your phone to pay for public transport in many cities around the world without having to use your thumb or face to confirm the purchase.

3. Local metro app – If you’re travelling to a big city, make sure to get the local metro app. This will save you tons of time staring at the metro maps in the station trying to figure out how to get from A to B. It’ll also help you not look like a lost tourist, which reduces the chances of becoming a target for pickpockets or con artists.

4. WhatsApp – Everybody everywhere uses WhatsApp to keep in touch. Except China where you need WeChat. From contacting your Airbnb host to getting in touch with friends, WhatsApp is indispensable when travelling. Heck, it’s pretty much indispensable full stop.

5. Spotify – Remember when a thousand songs in your pocket was Earth-shattering? Now, you can bring your whole music library when travel! With apps like Spotify, you can listen to whatever, whenever, wherever. I use it every day.

Even though guys don’t have to worry about personal safety as much as our female friends, to prevent any unpleasant experiences, you should still be aware and prepared.

Start with these travel essentials for men.

Don’t leave home without travel insurance

If you ignore all the other advice on this list, make sure you don’t ignore this one tip:

Get travel insurance.

Lots of guys have an invincibility complex but shit happens, even to the luckiest of us.

Travel insurance is a small expense (usually about a dollar or two per day) to guard against bankruptcy in case the worst comes to the worst. It certainly came in handy that time I had to have elbow surgery in Germany after a simple fall off my bike. And Jane was happy to have it when she got malaria in Laos .

The good news is, we can recommend a couple of travel insurance companies that are great — reliable, inexpensive, and trustworthy. Their plans give you coverage for delayed or lost baggage, emergency medical treatments, trip interruption and more.

Plus, they both make it super-quick and easy to sign up so you can spend your time trip planning.

World Nomads — One of the most popular brands recommended by most of the pro travel bloggers we know, World Nomads provides reliable coverage for short and long trips.

SafetyWing — A new player in the market, designed especially for people who travel frequently or for long stretches at a time. You can sign up for the monthly plan and then cancel whenever you decided to go home.

Bring a travel-size first aid kit

man holding travel first aid kit

Chances are, you’ll never need to use your first aid kit to save a life. But it’s damn handy to have around when you get minor cuts, blisters, food poisoning, or bug bites. Of course, if you ever do need to staunch a severe wound or survive in the wilderness overnight, you’ll need to write and thank me. For food poisoning make sure you pack some activated charcoal pills in the lot. Again, thank me later.

Common sense

Fact: Most travel injuries and disasters are caused by guys acting like total idiots. OK, I don’t have a study to prove it but life has taught me it’s true.

Try not to let your most testosterone-y self rule your every decision while you’re travelling. It’s A-OK to say “no thanks” to a challenge or to back down from an argument before it turns into a fight.

Also, if you’re in a foreign country and a woman who is way out of your league starts hitting on you, think twice. Some of the most common travel scams are focussed on single guys who are looking for some holiday action.

I’m not saying you should let fear be your guide but a healthy dose of caution is worth gold.

three packable water bottles on the beach

Refillable water bottle for every adventure

It’s almost 2020 and there is no excuse for single-use plastic water bottles in the world! Maybe carrying a refillable water bottle won’t solve the climate crisis but it can reduce your plastic consumption dramatically when you travel.

Finding a versatile and packable water bottle can be tricky though.

That’s where the MODL utility bottle comes in — it is so much more than just a water bottle. It is designed for all your adventures, from climbing dramatic peaks to enduring endless flights and everything in between.

MODL comes with a unique set of interchangeable lids and accessories, which transform it into a:

  • Sport-top bottle
  • Hands-free hydration pack
  • Water filter
  • Hand-held shower (yes, seriously!)
  • And more to come…

person using special bottle lid to spray mud off of hiking boots

It has an extremely tough silicone shell that folds in on itself to make it perfectly packable, is equipped with loops at either end so you can attach it to practically anything, and it opens at both ends to make cleaning super easy.

Plus, the MODL team keeps on creating — they’re currently working on new designs to expand the functionality even further.

This is a bottle you’ll love from day one and keep for a lifetime of adventures.

Reliable earplugs

Sleeping well is the most important part of any trip. If you’re a light sleeper, you’ll want earplugs to drown out street noise, early morning roosters, chirping frogs, buzzing fridges and mosquitos, and babies crying next to you on the plane.

Bamboo cutlery set

Not only does having your own travel cutlery set save you from eating using bendy plastic forks, but it also prevents you having to use questionably clean cutlery at the street stall. And, of course, it’s way better for the world!

Jane and I have been carrying our To-Go Ware bamboo cutlery sets for more than 10 years now — think how many plastic forks that is!

bamboo cutlery set in case

Ergonomic eye mask

It might not be manly but trust me on this one. Usually, I can sleep pretty much anywhere but with an eye mask I can sleep literally anywhere!

Hat & sunglasses

When you travel you spend a lot more time outside than usual. A hat and sunglasses will stand between you and permanent UV damage when you travel. (Note to self: I should really get a hat.)

travel coffee cup green klean kanteen

Leak-proof travel mug

Here’s another item to save the world and save you from having to drink coffee from a paper cup. If you’re a caffeine addict, bring a travel mug and use it every day. I love my Klean Kanteen coffee mug and have travelled with it non-stop for 7 years.

Small hand towel / handkerchief

I carry a handkerchief to use instead of paper towel. It saves trees, comes in handy to mop away sweat, and is useful in about a dozen other ways (yes, I am talking Bum Gun usage).

Travel is harder on your clothes than regular life, and you never know when a seam will split or a fabric will rip. My favourite shorts just got torn open on a rickety chair in Bali — my sewing kit has saved me from walking around with my boxers hanging out.

Now you’ve got all your gear together, the big question is, what goes in your carry-on to take on the plane, and what can you safely put away in your suitcase?

Here are the essentials for your carry-on luggage:

Passport & other ID — Obviously you won’t get far without this.

Earplugs — Whether your seatmate is a crying baby or a constant chatterer, earplugs are essential on the plane.

Noise-cancelling headphones — See above.

Eye mask — Flight crews always seem to turn on the lights just when you’re really falling asleep. Foil their evil plans with an eye mask.

Water bottle — Yes, even on the plane, you can say no to single-use plastic. I politely ask them to fill my water bottle when I run out.

All electronics and chargers — I never check my electronics. Baggage handlers can be rough, plus, you never know which gadget you’re going to need at 40,000 feet. Also, it’s the law now that any rechargeable battery must be in your carry-on.

Hand towel / handkerchief — Great for drying hands or mopping the sweat from your furrowed brow.

Snacks — Have you ever had a meal on the plane that was satisfying? Me neither. That’s why snacks are an essential carry-on item.

Toothbrush & toothpaste — Are you planning to meet a friend when you arrive at your destination? Brush your teeth before you meet them. They might not thank you but they also won’t recoil when you greet them.

man wearing rolex watch

Keeping your luggage light and nimble means leaving behind some of the more useless items you might be tempted to pack. Here are a few you should definitely leave at home.

Expensive clothes & shoes — Unless you’re travelling 5-star the whole way (In which case, why didn’t you get your assistant to read this post? And why don’t you sponsor our next year of travel? Email me!), expensive clothes and shoes are going to get ruined while you travel.

Either that, or you won’t take them out of the suitcase because you’re worried about them. So, just leave them at home. Instead, bring clothes that are designed to stand up to the rigours of travel.

An expensive SLR camera — Are you a photographer? Will you be doing anything with your travel photos other than sharing them on social media? If not, then you don’t need the latest SLR with six interchangeable lenses. This stuff is heavy, expensive, and a target for thieves. Leave it at home.

Laptop — Chances are you do not need your laptop when you travel. If it’s even an option, leave it at home! Having a laptop with you just adds weight to your suitcase and is an extra enticement for thieves. If you do NEED to work while you travel, or will be doing a lot of photo and video editing, then investing in a lightweight laptop is worth it.

Fancy watch — Nothing says “Hey pickpockets, come steal from this guy!”, quite like an expensive watch on your wrist. Leave the watch at home and look at your phone if you need to know the time.

Saying that each item on this list is essential for every man and every trip just doesn’t make sense. Essentials vary widely between each person travelling and each destination visited.

For example, for me, my Tempur-Pedic Travel Pillow is completely essential. But I didn’t put it on this list, because I doubt it’s essential for most of you.

So use my suggestions above as a starting point for you own travel essentials list. Then add and subtract items to make this list your own.

We hope you’ve found this guide to men’s travel essentials useful. Our goal is to help make your next trip into a transformational journey. With the right gear in your suitcase, you’ll be ready for any opportunity that arises. If you have any questions about this list, give me a shout on email or Instagram.

Minimal travel capsule wardrobe

The Best Clothes for a Men’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Choosing clothing for your travel can be tricky. But choosing an entire wardrobe can be even harder. Finding those right combinations to prepare for different scenarios – be it changes in weather or social settings – can cause some of us to overpack, cramming too many ‘what if’ items into our carry-on backpacks or luggage.

So that’s where a capsule wardrobe comes in. A go-to wardrobe of hardy staples that can mix and match, layer up or down, and adapt to any destination. And so below I’ll cover the best clothes for a men’s travel capsule wardrobe, recommending different wardrobes for warm and cold climates, and varying budgets, based on my personal research and testing.

It’s worth noting that the wardrobes below are tailored to my own personal ‘urban style’. If I had to frame it in two words it’d be ‘monochrome and minimal’. Granted , the below recommendations might not be your jam, but this may act as a good starting point to take on what might work for you, and then plug in your own splashes of personality.

Here are some basics to guide you in your selections:

Focus on quality and timeless style . Choose clean and timeless pieces that won’t drop out of fashion and will work for most situations. They’ll also need to be hardy enough to take on the rigors of travel.

Choose subdued colors . Blues, black, greens and greys interchange really well. Orange… not so much. But, hey, if your ‘look’ calls for more color, by all means add one or two statement pieces to add personality.

Build two wardrobes : one for cold-weather travel, and one for warm-weather. They don’t have to be completely different (you might, for example, still use the same t-shirts) but you will swap out a few items.

Limit your accessories, PJs, and workout clothes. Capsule wardrobes allow you to have as many accessories, PJs, and workout clothes as you’d like, but not the travel version. So sleep in your underwear and select pieces that you can get active in.

Choose 10 items or less : Limit your travel wardrobe, including shoes, to 10 items or less.

Men's Travel Capsule Wardrobe

What to include (and how many items) in a travel capsule wardrobe

Here’s a good basic list to stick by:

1 formal shirt

2 bottoms (pants/shorts)

1 mid layer

2 pairs shoes

Note, as long as you stick within the 10-item rule, you can adjust to the specifics of your trip. For example, I might pack another mid layer instead of a top for a colder climate. Or switch in a blazer if I’m getting formal for a meeting or dinner etc. And the best thing, you don’t have to stick to the below budget vs premium wardrobes, you can totally switch and change between the two. If you stick to the basics of subdued colorways and clean, classic cuts, everything should still match and look fresh.

And if you’re keen on women’s brands make sure check out Jesse’s ‘How & What to Put in Your Capsule Wardrobe’ article  here .

Warm-weather men’s travel capsule wardrobe recommendations

For warm weather travel capsule wardrobes, focus on pieces that are breathable and sweat-wicking. In terms of style, opt for pieces simple enough to work just as well for a night out as they would on the beach or trail. You’ll also want to include a layer or two for chilly plane rides, unexpectedly cold evenings, and rain. For shoes, go for a pair of comfortable sneakers and sandals.

Men's Summer Budget Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Budget Recommendations

‘Budget’ doesn’t have to mean unfashionable. There are plenty of brands making great gear for around $100 or less. Here’s a selection of products I recommend:

Shoes: Allbirds Wool Runners ($110)

Shoes:   Teva Voya Flip Flops ($35) or $2 market flip flops

Top: Proof 72-Hour Merino ($78)

Top: Western Rise X Cotton Tee ($54) or Wool&Prince V-Neck ($74)

Top: Duckworth Vapor Tee ($69)

Bottoms : Olivers Apparel All Over Short ($68)

Bottoms: Uniqlo Chino Shorts ($29.90)

Bottoms: Proof Rover Pant ($118)

Mid layer: Uniqlo Extra Fine Merino Crew Neck ($49.90) Shell: Uniqlo Men’s Blocktech Parka ($89.90)

For more formal scenarios, switch in a dress shirt and blazer, the   Uniqlo Easy Care Shirt  $40 and Uniqlo Ultra Light Jacket $69.90 are excellent value.

And for gym / travel attire, check out RYU .

Gear highlights

Here’s more insight into some gear I’ve personally tested and have in rotation:

Allbirds Wool Runners

There’s a lot of hype around Allbirds right now, and for good reason: they’re churning out lovely and versatile silhouettes that work well in social and more formal settings, with their whole schtick focused on natural materials. In the case of these sneakers, it’s Merino wool. So, as you might have guessed, these are soft, itch-free, wicking, and very comfortable. The laces are 100% recycled polyester, and the inner soles are cushioned with more wool and castor bean oil (a more environmentally friendly option to standard foam). So if you’re environmentally conscious, and like comfort, these are for you.

But note, because these are so super soft , they lack structure for the ankle, and the grip on the sole is somewhat cosmetic, so I wouldn’t recommend these for jogging or casual hiking. These are urban shoes only; perfect for pavements and black-top and cafe floors.

Proof 72-Hour Merino

I’ve tried a bunch of Merino tees on the market and this is one of the best. It’s a blend of 87% 16.5 micron Merino wool and 13% nylon, so it has all of the benefits of Merino but with a greater strength, so it’ll serve you longer. The cut is stylish. It’s soft and lightweight. And it’s just $78. This is a home run for me.

Proof-72-Hour-Merino---best-travel-shirt navy

Duckworth Vapor Tee

If you’ve read some of my previous articles , you’ll know I’ve been a fan of Duckworth for years now. One of the very first small US-made brands to dish out quality Merino, and they’re still going strong, serving simple staples at a good price.   I have a few shirts from them and they’re still going strong today, after years of use. I’d get behind this little brand.

Men's Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Duckworth Vapor Tee

Olivers Apparel All Over Short

I’m always on the lookout for a ‘do it all’ pair of shorts – and these tick all of my boxes. They’re not too long or tight, and have a trim tailored fit, perfect for dressing up. Enough stretch for workouts (or tennis games). And they’re finished with ‘nice to have’ features like water repellency, moisture wicking, and even a fun little inner pocket for secure carry (you’ll never lose your hotel key again!). All in all, these are truly great shorts for any holiday or adventure. At $68, you can buy two, one black, one navy or olive, and you’ll be sorted for a few years to come.

Men's Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Olivers All Over Short

Proof Rover Pant

The Rover Pant is a quality, hard-wearing work pant. Durable, technical, and very comfortable, it can handle a range of terrains and activities with ease. Inbuilt stretch, a gusseted crotch, and dart seams behind the knees keep you moving smoothly, whether you’re hopping on a bike, striding up a hill, or simply taking in the city sights. Plus with its breathable, moisture-wicking Sorbtek-infused canvas, this pant will help you stay comfy while you’re on the go.

Premium Recommendations

If you have a little more wiggle room in your budget, expand your search to brands specializing in technical clothing. While not necessarily built just for travel, they have the functional-fashionable qualities you’ll want in travel clothes. Here’s a premium summer capsule I recommend:

Men's Summer Premium Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Shoes: Vivobarefoot Primus Trail II FG ($160)

Shoes: FitMyFoot Custom Sandals ($129)

Top: Outlier Ultrafine ($120)

Top: Arc’teryx Frame SS Shirt ($150)

Top: Alchemy Equipment AEM202 180GSM Merino SS Polo ($160)

Bottoms: Western Rise Evolution Short ($98)

Bottoms: Outlier New Way Shorts ($128)

Bottoms: Outlier Futureslimworks ($175) or Ministry of Supply Men’s Pace Tapered Chino ($148) or Mission Workshop Signal : LT ($235)

Mid layer: Ministry of Supply Men’s Hybrid Crew Neck Sweatshirt ($114) Shell: Patagonia Men’s Calcite Jacket ($299)

For more formal scenarios, switch in a dress shirt and blazer. I strongly suggest checking out the Ministry of Supply Apollo Shirt ($128), Ministry of Supply  Kinetic Blazer ($328) and the  Bluffworks Gramercy ($340), they’re the top tier in these categories for me.

Vivobarefoot Primus Trail II FG

If you’re new to the whole barefoot thing, there’s a real science to it. You see, the human foot is naturally wide and fan-shaped, has its own natural arches, and thousands of nerve endings that send information to the brain, allowing it to move correctly based on the terrain it’s ambling along. But our feet weren’t designed to be smothered in shoes. And so sometimes that information and natural design gets lost or muddled up, and that can result in a bunch of things, from parts of your feet not strengthening properly to hindering your natural gait. Sounds like hippy stuff, right? Well, I can tell you it’s not. If you’re willing to try (and do things like practice walking and running differently) you’ll find the comfort of going barefoot really rewarding.

So if that sounds like you, check out the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail II FG. The Firm Ground Sole  lets these shoes tackle multiple terrain types with ease, from wet to dry and rocky trails to urban pavements. Built wide, thin and flexible, they enable natural stability and movement, while also rolling up for compact packing. Built using vegan-friendly, recycled materials, their eco-conscious construction gets a big tick too. However, bear in mind that these aren’t a great option for steep and technical hiking trails (you’ll be better off finding a dedicated hiking boot). And let me reiterate, you’ll need to re-teach yourself how to run if you’re wearing these. It takes practice. So don’t just leg it out for a jog without putting in the work. Otherwise your calves will hate you, seriously. But if you’re after a versatile, comfortable, and packable option for a range of environments, these are well worth considering.

Outlier Ultrafine

I’m not sure how many times we’ve collectively talked about the Outlier Ultrafine tees. They’ve been a staple for our team for an eternity. These are super premium low-micron Merino tees that have a lovely drape and superior fashion chops, don’t pill, and feel so nice on. If you like and can afford nice things, these are the best tees on the planet in my opinion; score one or two of these for your wardrobe.

Outlier New Way Shorts

For me, these are the original ‘do all’ shorts. I have three pairs and wear them every week through summer. So rich in details and executed perfectly. From their t wo-way stretch to  DWR treatment for quick drying to the Paracord Type III MIL-C-5040 internal drawstring, these are an essential item for any premium wardrobe. Love these shorts!

Western Rise Evolution Short

Western Rise continually impress with their innovative and functional apparel. And now they’ve turned their expertise to a multifunctional short designed to go from work to play and weekends away. The Evolution Short boasts a range of thoughtful features such as four-way stretch, stain and water resistance, a zippered pocket for small valuables, and a lightweight yet durable build that will handle active and relaxed use alike. All delivered in a stylish silhouette that moves smoothly from casual work settings to a quick hike or a day at the beach.

Ministry of Supply Men’s Hybrid Crew Neck Sweatshirt

Looking for cozy comfort and sleek style in one? Ministry of Supply have you covered with their Men’s Hybrid Crew Neck Sweatshirt. Designed to be soft but durable, the sweatshirt is made with pill-resistant Hybrid Fabric that continues to look good wash after wash, while the soft velour interior brings a luxuriously comfy touch to this travel staple. A useful kangaroo pocket provides quick-access storage for small essentials or a cozy home for your hands when the weather is feeling fresh. And the clean silhouette works well across a range of settings for added versatility.

DUER No Sweat Pant in Slim

If you’re a denim lover but want a little more from your jeans, DUER are a brand you need to check out. Their pants give you that rugged ‘denim look’ but with greater comfort, odor control and freedom of movement. I have two pairs and wear them almost weekly. They wear well, with the only gripe I have so far being the leather label: it’s on the back of the waistband and isn’t aging too gracefully. But that’s no big deal, it’s usually hidden by a t-shirt. All in all, a solid alternative to jeans.

Patagonia Men’s Calcite Jacket

It’s highly likely you’re going to encounter rain at some point in your travels. But Patagonia’s Calcite Jacket will keep you well protected from inclement weather. Made with 100% recycled polyester GORE-TEX Paclite® Plus fabric, the jacket is waterproof but breathable and also features venting pit zips if you need to shed some heat. Three zippered pockets provide handy storage for small travel or EDC items and as an added bonus the jacket is also packable, making it super convenient to stash in your day bag so you’re prepared for whatever the weather has in store.

Cold-weather men’s travel capsule wardrobe recommendations

When building a travel capsule wardrobe for cold weather trips, you can reuse a few of the items from your warm weather capsule. But, of course, you’ll need to swap in some warmer layers, a heavier jacket, and shoes that can stand up to long walks in the snow (not the beach).

Budget recommendations

While you can build a winter wardrobe for travel on a budget, prepare to make your shoes and coat your “big ticket” items. You may end up spending a little more on those than you did for your summer shoes and jacket.

Woolly Everyday Henley

I’ve become a fan of Woolly of late. They make great and simple Merino staples that come in at the right price. And this Henley has served me well. It has a great fit. Feels soft and comfortable. And blends with any outfit. Simple. Affordable. Clean. As advertised.

Woolly-Everyday-Weight-Long-Sleeve-Henley (model in grey)

Flint and Tinder 365 Pant

It’s hard to argue with a US-made pant of this quality for under $100. Very soft and comfortable to wear, made with 2% Spandex for stretch and 98% cotton for softness, these are great for traveling or bouncing around town. Designed to be worn year-round, the pant offers the look and feel of chinos with the flexibility of a performance pant. And with three fits to choose from (slim, straight, and tapered), plus a range of colorways, you can easily match these up with your personal style preferences.

Premium Recommendations

Especially for winter wear, spending a little more will get you pieces that (usually) hold up better to the environment and last longer. It also means you can tap into way more stylish and technical outerwear brands like Ministry of Supply  and Arc’teryx who craft gear at the very highest level.

Men's winter premium travel capsule wardrobe

DUER No Sweat Pant Slim

Travel can take its toll so comfort is a top priority to keep you trekking on. But there’s no reason you can’t add a little style to the mix too. DUER’s No Sweat Pant Slim offers the comfort of a sweatpant but steps it up on the style front with a versatile pant aesthetic that can be dressed up or down. Made with No Sweat fabric which offers stretch, moisture-wicking, and antibacterial properties in one, this pant is a savvy travel piece that will transition smoothly from work meetings to active pursuits or a night on the town.

DUER No Sweat Pant Slim

Olivers Passage Pant

Fast becoming a staple in a lot of our editors’ wardrobes , these pants from Olivers are lightweight, comfortable in long transits and great-looking. Made from a high quality 91% CORDURA grade nylon and 9% spandex blend, they have just the right amount of stretch, match perfectly with tees or shirts, and come in at a reasonable price. And if you’re savvy in the pant game, you’ll most like make good comparisons with the fan favorite  Outlier Slim Dungarees. Both are very similar as far as comfort, cut and handfeel, with the Passage Pants wearing just a touch lighter.

Note, these do wear a little bigger than advertised. I’m a 32 waist but I’ll most likely size down in my next pair.

Alchemy Equipment AEM293 Performance Down Parka

When the temperatures start dropping and rain or snow looms on the horizon, having a suitable jacket on hand will keep you toasty and protected on your travels. And if you’re looking not just for functional performance but also fashion-forward styling, the Alchemy Equipment AEM293 Performance Down Parka is a great option.

The clean aesthetic looks slick on urban streets, while its waterproof fabric and 600-fill power duck down insulation keep you comfy when chilly and wet weather sets in. And if you’re looking for an option to keep all your small essentials close at hand, this parka has you covered. Dual exterior chest pockets featuring nifty magnetic flap closures, zippered hand pockets, and an inner zipped chest pocket provide plenty of storage for your small travel and EDC items.

15 Best Men’s Travel Pants for Every Style, Budget, or Adventure

Men’s Travel Pants: The unicorn of the travel wardrobe | What to take and how to avoid overpacking are some of the most vexing problems in travel prep.  Having durable clothing that looks good, doesn’t get dirty, and performs well from the city to the trail definitely makes packing and planning easier and this is why nearly every minimalist traveler is on the search for the perfect pair of travel pants.

Men’s Travel Pants for Every Style, Budget, or Adventure | Travel Pants

Having the perfect travel pants is one piece in a system that let’s you travel the world with only a carry on backpack , avoiding baggage fees, the risk of losing baggage, and making the process of getting into and out of airports much easier.  The perfect travel could be your single pant for an entire trip – making your bag smaller and lighter and your life a bit more simple.

Unfortunately, the perfect travel pants don’t exist, but there are plenty of options, depending on your type of travel, style, and individual needs.  To find the best travel pants for your needs, style, and adventure, we first need to understand what contributes to a great travel pant

15+ Great Men’s Travel Pants for Every Style and Budget

  • Materials & Constructions & Construction in a Good Pair of Travel Pants
  • Style & Cut in a Pair of Travel Pants

Travel Specific Features that Improve a Pair of Pants

  • The Best Travel Pants Available (A Running List) )

What determines a Good Pair of Men’s Travel Pants?

Materials & construction & construction, style, and travel appropriateness…, …or click here to jump to the list of best travel pants options for men, materials & constructions in travel pants.

When it comes to assessing a potential pair of travel pants men need to judge the pants on a few, select traits to ensure a comfortable, durable, and stylish pair of pants suited to their unique travels and adventures.

The perfect travel pants for men will have all of the traits listed below to some degree, but will never have all perfectly.

Hiking pants will be durable and breath foremost.

Travel ready chinos will have a refined cut, be stain and wrinkle resistant, and be able to go days without washing.

Travel ready jeans will be comfortable and stylish, while being lightweight, drying quicker than normal, and adding a bit of stretch.

The bottom line: When looking for the perfect travel pants men need to prioritize the traits for the travel and activities to come and the style/materials necessary. Use the following list as a checklist of what to look for in those perfect pants

  • Breathable: Do the pants allow air (and water vapor from sweat) to pass through easily?  Or is moisture easily trapped?
  • Moisture wicking: For sweat that accumulates next to the skin, does the fabric transfer it out to dry? Or trap it next to the skin.
  • Quick drying : How quickly do the pants dry?  How well do they dry in the shade or in lower temperatures?
  • Durable: How well does the pants’ fabric stand up to abrasion
  • Odor Resistant: How many washes can you skip before the funk becomes too strong?
  • Dirt and stain Resistant: resistance to dirt and grim will let you skip washes when on the move
  • Water resistant: Small spills rolling off the pants and light rain being shed quickly will ease your life
  • Slight stretch: Slight freedom of movement makes the pants more suitable for active activities and comfortable on long flights
  • Packable (low bulk and weight): When folded or rolled, how much space do the pants take up compared to other clothes?
  • Reinforcement in high stress areas: Gusseted crotches and additional layers of cloth at the knees will let you use these pants a little harder without worry and save you the time and money of replacing them anytime soon

Style & Cut in a Pair of Men’s Travel Pants

Style and cut arguably has the most influence on how versatile a pair of pants are.  If trimmed too baggily and with too much a hiking cut, you won’t be able to blend in at that nice restaurant you’ll go to from time to time.  If the cut is too trendy and fashionable, you’ll be out of style by the time you return from your trip or the cut will restrict your movement making the pants unsuitable for hiking and adventure activities (I’m looking at you skinny jeans).

The best men’s travel pants will have a timeless, neutral fit, not too baggy, not too slim, with just enough room to let you move.  This approach will lead to a pair of pants that you can wear for years virtually anywhere without issue

Key Points to Look for in the Style and Cut of Travel Pants

  • Neutral styling – fits in the city but isn’t restrictive in the backcountry
  • Slightly active cut for freedom of movement (aided by slight stretch in the Materials & Constructions)

Pants that are styled & cut like jeans, chinos, or minimalist hiking pants tend to be more suitable for a wider range of circumstances and stand the test of style over time.

If you had all of the above, you might have the perfect pant, but not the perfect travel pant…yet.

The best travel clothing companies add their own tiny features that enhance or ease how you travel.  A few examples include

  • Hidden security pockets: Travel pants with hidden pockets ward off pickpockets and make it easier to travel through public spaces with
  • Zippered or buttoned pockets to ward off pickpockets
  • Stow pockets: that allow you to stow the pants into themselves
  • Extra comfort: Soft waistband, slight stretch, and soft lined internal fabric make for a pair of comfortable travel pants. Mens pants normally prioritize function – adding comfort makes for a pair of pants ready for daily wear.

Pro Tips for Picking Up a Great Pair of Travel Pants

1. search the used market for high dollar brands.

Ebay and and Reddit used gear forums are great options for picking up great, lightly used gear within your budget.

2. Ditch the Traditional Jeans when Traveling beyond city limits

Once upon a time, Levi Strauss’ jeans were a wonderfully high tech innovation.  Its not that time anymore.  Traditional cotton jeans are heavy, dry slowly, and restrict movement in a way that make them horrible for the outdoors or any activity that’s potentially wet or has a lot of movement.  If your travels are confined to the cities, jeans may work.  If you adventure beyond city limits, do yourself a favor and ditch the jeans in favor of one of the travel upgrades below.

3. Pick a pair pants that are suited to your activities and travel style instead of a pair of pants that do everything

If you’ll spend most of a vacation hiking, then your pants don’t need to look like slacks, just stylish (like the Foehn Brise Pants ). However, if you don’t plan on trouncing through the woods, a techy pair of slacks (like the Bluffworks Ascender Chinos ). But if you do need to adventure everywhere and do everything, paying a little extra for an unbeatable pant (like the Western Rise Evolution Pants https://western-rise.pxf.io/at-pant ). Aim for pants that fit your task, your adventure, your style, and that’s it, and it will make finding the perfect travel pants mens easiest travel task.

Now, let’s get into our list of the best travel pants for men…

But choosing the best travel garment bag for your needs can be a challenge. There are a lot of options on the market, so we asked an expert about how to find the right one. According to Tumi creative director Victor Sanz, “Your garment bag should be sturdy, functional, and sleek. If you’re frequently traveling by plane, a garment bag that folds to fit carry-on requirements is essential.” He adds, “You want to find the size that will fit all your clothes without having to overfold them and will allow you to reach your destination in style.”

It’s also important to consider bonus features, like pockets and organizational compartments, and, as Sanz notes, “A crucial function is to ensure that you’re able to hang your garment bag when you arrive at your destination, so that you can prepare your outfits as easily as possible and to ensure that all your clothes are crisp.” Keeping all this in mind, we found the 12 best travel garment bags out there today. Once you start using one of these, you’re never going to go back.

MZ Wallace’s signature quilting isn’t limited to the brand’s totes, appearing here in garment bag form. The thin design is extremely lightweight, ideal for quick trips when you need to bring one to three outfits. There is even an exterior pocket for bonus storage.

Dimensions: 22" × 3" × 39"

Materials: Oxford, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I have been interested in a MZ Wallace garment bag for a while. It is perfect! Just right proportions and size. Thoughtful design and construction details.”

Tumi always delivers premium luggage that will last you over a decade, and this garment bag is no exception. Sanz says: “It’s foldable, with a sturdy handle for easy carrying, making it convenient and compact for every type of travel. I also love that it has several zipper pockets, so I can pack my toiletries and other travel essentials all in one bag. When I arrive at my destination, I hang it in the closet and I know that I will be ready to go.”

Dimensions: 15" x 22" x 6"

Materials: Ballistic nylon

What reviewers are saying: “This bag stores so much for a carry on. I was able to comfortably fit 2 suits and more for a destination wedding!”

This duffel has been receiving high praise ever since its release. A few of the reasons it’s so popular: The duffel is carry-on friendly, water-resistant, and has interior and exterior pockets. And those are only a few of its distinguishing features. Choose an original or compact size for the style that suits your needs.

Dimensions: 22" x 12" x 12"

Materials: Polyester

What reviewers are saying: “The Garment Duffel is a great purchase, especially for anyone in an industry that takes short frequent trips. I was actually able fit quite a bit more clothes than I had anticipated. Took the bag to work and my company bought 20 of them to give to customers. Great purchase.”

Longchamp’s iconic nylon and leather trim takes on a garment bag silhouette. The two-tone design exudes sophistication, with practical touches like a top carry handle, built-in hanger, and front zip pocket.

Dimensions: 23.25" x 41.25"

Materials: Nylon, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who travels a lot and needed a nice garment bag particularly for his suits. This bag is perfect! It fits his suit as well as a few extra shirts. The fabric is an amazing, durable quality, and the leather details make this product look incredible.”

This garment bag is actually designed to fit inside of your carry-on, rather than serving as a stand-alone piece. The water-resistant exterior protects against spills, and exterior zip pockets hold small accessories. It gets the job done, while taking up the least possible amount of space.

Dimensions: 40" x 19"

What reviewers are saying: “I use this bag when I need to workout at work. I go from a suit to athleticwear in minutes.”

Looking for an affordable option that is available ASAP? Amazon’s garment bag holds up to three suits or dresses and boasts multiple zipper compartments.

Dimensions: 40" x 4" x 20.5"

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this bag in 2019 and it has held up incredibly well since then, performs all functions advertised at a great price value. I have taken it on many flights, buses and train rides and have never had an issue with fitting it in the overhead bin on both longer-haul flights and short budget-airline carriers.”

Hartmann’s garment bag adds contemporary touches to an otherwise traditional design. The result? A chic, useful travel accessory that will stand the test of time. The padded shoulder strap and multiple interior pockets enhance the convenience of this style.

Materials: Nylon

What reviewers are saying: “Hartmann was an anniversary gift from my work place, and I am still proud to own it 35 years later.”

Mark & Graham Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag

Another convertible duffel, but this time with a personalized touch. That’s right—Mark & Graham lets you monogram your duffel. With a plethora of zippered and snap interior and exterior pockets, this bag gets creative with its storage solutions.

Dimensions: 22" x 10" x 10"

This spinner-style garment bag makes navigating a chaotic airport easy. The ergonomic design has expandable capabilities, as well as various compartments, a hanger bracket, and a pocket for liquids.

Dimensions: 20.5" x 24" x 9.5"

What reviewers are saying: “It’s easy to maneuver and overall great quality and very neat design (many compartments and zippered areas).”

For golfers and non-golfers alike, Stitch makes a duffel that is water- and stain-resistant, and includes a hanger hook, shoulder strap, elastic shoe pockets, and webbed handles. You can even get it customized with your initials.

Dimensions: 22.5" x 11.5" x 12"

What reviewers are saying: “Love it! Fits into the airplane overhead bin, no trouble bringing it along as a carry-on bag. Very sturdy, zippers are tough enough. Shoulder strap is removable. My suit arrived in top shape using this garment bag. Highly recommended.”

Ralph Lauren Leather-Trim Hybrid Garment Duffel

Do women make better physicians? New study finds patients with female doctors have a lower risk of death and hospital readmission rates.

Are patients in better hands if they’re being treated by female physicians? Yes, according to one new study. Although the positive impact was greater in female patients — particularly those who were severely ill — the research revealed that both men and women under the care of female doctors generally had a lower risk of death and lower 30-day hospital readmission rates . The study, which was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, used a nationally representative sample of more than 700,000 Medicare patients aged 65 years or older who were hospitalized during 2016 to 2019, and treated by hospitalists, who are doctors that work exclusively in hospitals.

“In our opinion, female physicians may be better than male physicians at making rapport with female patients and effective communication with patients, leading to more likely agreement about advice provided,” Dr. Atsushi Miyawaki , co-author of the study and lecturer at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Medicine, tells Yahoo Life. “Also, female physicians may have fewer gender biases than male physicians in assessment of symptoms and illness against female patients, leading to the possibility to notice changes in severely ill female patients earlier.”

This isn’t the first study to find that a doctor’s gender can affect patient care. A December 2021 JAMA Surgery study found that female patients had worse outcomes when treated by male physicians, but the same wasn’t true for male patients treated by female physicians. A 2018 study found that male doctors underestimated stroke risk in female patients, while female physicians did well in assessing stroke risk in women. And a 2017 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that female physicians are more likely to adhere to clinical guidelines and evidence-based practice compared to male physicians.

How do female and male doctors differ in their approach to patient care?

Miyawaki says that, based on previous research in this area, there are several reasons why female patients may be treated differently by male doctors compared to female physicians, including communication challenges and gender biases in assessing the severity of symptoms or an illness. Another factor Miyawaki references is medical education: “Limited medical training in women's health issues in general curricula may exacerbate these problems. Due to this traditional pattern in medical training, it may be possible for male physicians in particular to have a limited understanding of female-specific issues.”

Women’s health expert Dr. Jennifer Wider tells Yahoo Life that she’s not surprised by the study’s findings. “Gender bias and sex disparity is long established in the field of health care,” she says. “Studies in the past have shown that female patients are more likely to have their concerns dismissed by health care providers, more likely to have their pain underestimated and heart symptoms not taken as seriously as their male counterparts. On average, female physicians will be less likely to dismiss the symptoms of female patients, and as a result — [provide] a more thorough investigation and workup.”

Female primary care physicians (PCPs) also spend more time per visit with both male and female patients compared to male doctors, which results in a loss of revenue for them, according to a 2020 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. “Other studies have suggested that female PCPs may use this additional time to take a more thorough patient history, engage in shared decision making, provide more detailed explanations and use more evidence-based, patient-centered communication approaches,” the study authors wrote.

Dr. Arghavan Salles , a clinical associate professor of medicine at Stanford whose research focuses on gender equity, tells Yahoo Life that research dating back decades shows female doctors are more likely to ask about social circumstances and other factors that may affect people’s health aside from whether they’re taking their medications or not. “Female physicians are more likely to have a collaborative approach with their patients,” she says. “They’re more likely to consult specialists about their patient’s care. It speaks to a design to optimize the care of the patients and recognize that we don’t always know everything. In doing that, they may be more likely to provide appropriate care for patients.”

Do some patients feel more comfortable sharing personal health information with female doctors?

Based on his own experiences as a physician, study author Miyawaki believes this is the case. “Some female patients may find it easier to communicate female-specific health issues — such as urologic, gynecologic and breast problems — to a female physician or receive examinations involving private body parts from a female physician,” he says. “It is also known that female physicians tend to have communication patterns that value empathy with patients.”

Dr. Allison Heinen , assistant professor of hospital medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, agrees: “It is easy to see that patients may feel more comfortable sharing sensitive information with a physician who they view as more like themselves and able to understand their concerns on a more personal level.”

Should women try to seek out female doctors when possible?

Heinen says that many female patients are already doing this because they feel more comfortable with a female physician for a variety of reasons. “I think the most important attribute you should seek when choosing a physician," Heinen says, "is someone who will take the time to listen to your concerns and address them adequately, regardless of their gender or your gender.”

Wider agrees that finding an attentive doctor, whether they’re a man or a woman, is key. “I think if a patient is unhappy with the care of her current provider, seeking out a different health care provider who listens to her and takes her concerns seriously is of the utmost importance,” she says. “According to this study, a person may have more luck with a female provider.”

However, Salles believes that it can be challenging in some cases to find doctors who are women. “We have to recognize that there are not as many women physicians as there are men physicians, so in some places that may not be an option,” she says. “Or if you’re in the hospital, as in the context of this study, and you’re assigned to someone. So there are situations in which we don’t really have a choice.”

She adds, “As far as, should women seek out other women physicians? It’s a choice. I personally do that for a lot of reasons, mainly related to comfort and having a common ground and relatability.”

So what can physicians, in particular male doctors, learn from this?

Being aware of certain biases is an important first step. “From this study, we can all recognize that implicit biases may play a role in how we as physicians perceive a patient’s health concern and the steps we take to address that concern,” Heinen says. “Physicians and patients should also take note that female physicians provide the same quality of care as their male colleagues, and as this study suggests, the care might even be better for female patients admitted to female physicians, especially when being treated for a high severity illness.”

A 2023 commentary in JAMA pointed to research that suggests that women surgeons, for example, are more likely to use “patient-centered decision-making, [are] more willing to collaborate and more carefully select patients for surgery.” According to researchers, “these differences might translate into different outcomes for female and male surgeons.”

But when symptoms and health risks in female patients are underestimated by doctors,   the authors of that study pointed out that it can result in delayed or incomplete care, “ultimately leading to poorer patient outcomes.” The researchers also noted that “ineffective communication hinders patients from providing crucial information for accurate diagnoses and treatment, potentially leading to suboptimal outcomes.”

Miyawaki says it’s important for male physicians to recognize that these problems can occur when they see a female patient. “Gender bias and communication challenges are often implicit,” he says. “Recognizing this will be the starting point to resolve these challenges.”

Salles says it’s understandable if some male physicians feel a bit defensive when they see studies like this latest one and suggests approaching these findings with curiosity instead. “These differences in how men and women physicians approach their work could be translating into different outcomes,” she says. “It could be helpful for men physicians to be curious about what their women colleagues are doing differently and maybe learn what they’re doing to provide better care.”

But regardless of a doctor’s gender, says Salles, “all physicians want to provide the best possible care to their patients.”

Fire service issues alert after rise in wildfires

What fliers need to know about new refund rules for airlines

Starting in about six months, u.s. airlines will have to offer customers cash refunds before vouchers.

male travel style

New federal rules for airlines will go into effect later this year, giving travelers a better picture of the full cost of flights before they book — and getting them an easier refund if things go awry.

After a process that lasted more than a year, the Biden administration announced the rules on passenger protections Wednesday.

“This is a big day for America’s flying public,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a news conference at Reagan National Airport.

While the trade group Airlines for America said its members “abide by — and frequently exceed — DOT regulations regarding consumer protections,” consumer advocates praised the administration’s move.

“These rules are not only critical but also common sense,” said William McGee, senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, who spoke at Wednesday’s event.

Most new rules go into effect in the fall

At the event Wednesday, Buttigieg said that “the bulk of these protections” will go into effect in about six months. Others will start in a year.

That means refund rules that get customers automatic cash refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change flights won’t be in place during the busy summer travel season. But they should be set in time for the Thanksgiving and winter holiday season rush.

Buttigieg said that the department expects airlines to take some time to develop the processes to return cash to travelers, but added that he doesn’t want them to drag their feet.

“They don’t have to wait the number of months that it’ll technically take for this to go into effect,” Buttigieg said Wednesday. “They could and should be doing this right now.”

You should get refunds without having to ask

Instead of first offering a voucher or credit, airlines “must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops,” the Transportation Department says. The refunds need to be issued within seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days when bought through other methods.

However a traveler originally paid is the way the refund needs to be issued, the rule says, whether that’s by credit card or airline miles . Other types of compensation are allowed only if a passenger chooses one of those alternatives.

“No more defaulting to vouchers or credits when consumers may not even realize that they were entitled to cash,” Buttigieg said.

You can still choose to be rebooked

If travelers’ flights have been canceled or significantly changed, they can still continue with their trip. Passengers are only eligible for a refund if they have declined to accept alternative transportation.

Airlines will have to pay for delayed bags and broken WiFi

There are many ways for a trip to go awry, and the new rules cover more than just a late or canceled flight.

If a checked bag isn’t delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight arriving at the gate, or within 15 to 30 hours of an international flight arriving, depending on how long that flight is, passengers will be entitled to a refund of their checked-bag fee. They will need to file a mishandled baggage report.

Refunds will also be given if passengers pay for a service such as WiFi, seat selection or in-flight entertainment and the airline fails to provide.

‘Significant’ changes will be the same for all airlines

Automatic cash refunds are due to passengers if their flight experiences a “significant change.” But what does that mean? Previously, the definition could vary from airline to airline.

The new rules provide some consistency. A change is considered significant if a departure or arrival is different by more than three hours for domestic flights or six hours for international trips.

Other changes considered significant: the departure or arrival is from a different airport; there are more connections; passengers are downgraded to a lower class; or service or flights are on planes that are less accessible for a person with a disability.

No more hidden fees for bags and seat selection

The rule on extra fees — what the Biden administration refers to as “surprise junk fees in air travel” — will require airlines and online travel booking sites to disclose up front the fees for a checked bag, carry-on bag, reservation change and reservation cancellation. Those fees must be clearly noted and not shown through a hyperlink, the rule says.

Consumers must also be informed that they don’t have to pay for a seat assignment to travel and that a seat will be provided without an additional price.

“Healthy competition requires that, as a consumer, you comparison shop, which means knowing the real price of a trip before and not after you buy,” Buttigieg said. “Airlines will now be required to show you these costs up front, so you have all the information you need to decide what travel option is best for you.”

Travelers can either search without providing their personal information to see standard fees or, after entering their information, see more tailored fees that might apply given their military status, frequent-flier membership or credit card use.

“The final rule puts an end to the bait-and-switch tactics some airlines use to disguise the true cost of discounted flights,” the Transportation Department said in a news release. “Prior to the rule, some airlines were offering deceptive discounts that consumers may have believed applied to the full fare that was being advertised but only applied to a small portion of the ticket price.”

You will still have to report complaints

Buttigieg said the main way for the department to find out about a violation of the rules is when people submit complaints through the site flightrights.gov . But he said he hopes that by making refunds automatic, there will be less need for complaints — and more flexibility for employees to perform audits or spot-checks of airline compliance.

Europe-style compensation is still not in the rules

Some travelers heading to or from Europe who experience delays under certain circumstances are entitled to compensation worth more than $600. That kind of system does not exist for domestic flights in the United States, but Buttigieg said it is on the agenda.

“On compensation, we continue to develop that — and to be clear, with this rule on the books, that does not stop or slow the progress that we’re driving in terms of a compensation rule,” he said.

Hoka Men’s Bondi X Sneakers

Nordstrom Rack has another pair of the top-rated Bondi X sneakers available in men’s sizing and five different hues for a mere $140. Hoka Men’s All Terrain 6 Running Shoes

In fact, shoppers brag that they are “amazingly comfortable” thanks to their ultra-plush cushioning. They’re also on major discount for nearly half off, which is unheard of for Hokas — so if I were you, I’d run , not walk, to add a pair to your cart.

Hoka Men’s Tecton X Running Shoe

These sneakers are inspired by the Earth’s tectonic plates, which influenced the design of their carbon fiber plates that are “poised to unleash a seismic shift in trail running,” according to the brand. In other words, these shoes are meant to absorb shock, pressure, and movement for easy, comfortable running on any terrain. Beyond comfort, these sneakers are also crafted with grippy outsoles to keep your feet firmly in place, no matter what. I miraculously found them fully in stock, so don’t think twice about adding these all-terrain kicks to your collection.

Hoka Men’s Zinal Trail Running Shoes

This pair of sneakers boasts a breathable mesh and durable yarn construction to make the ultimate trail running shoe that’ll let you stride over rocks, uneven ground, sand, and more with ease. And if you aren’t a runner, no problem: these same features lend themselves to being an excellent day hike-ready shoe, as they can take you through even the toughest of terrain with unmatched support and durability. Get them for $60 off today.
