The Best Testaccio Market Tour In Rome

By Author Daryl and Mindi Hirsch

Discover why taking this Testaccio Market tour in Rome is a must for curious foodies who travel to Rome.

Produce at Testaccio Market in Rome

Rome’s Testaccio neighborhood is all about food. Yet, somehow, we never made it to the city’s culinary nerve center of restaurants and markets during our first visit to the eternal city.

We’ve since made up for lost time by eating our way through the Mercato Testaccio numerous times. We’ve also sampled ‘the Roman four’, the city’s famous quartet of pastas, at classic Testaccio trattorias and licked gelato cones while wandering through the area’s grid of streets.

But, as is typically the case with Rome in general and Testaccio in particular, there are always new things to discover. We realized this while taking a fascinating tour that revealed hidden neighborhood gems and introduced us to the ghostlike Mattatoi, Testaccio’s former slaughterhouse that’s been converted into a large mixed use cultural facility. This former stockyard area of Rome is deep in history and food.

Testaccio Food And Market Tour

Eating a Panini at Testaccio Market in Rome

While the secret’s out about the formerly hard-scrabble neighborhood and its walkable grid, Testaccio has retained a non-touristy vibe over the years. Much of the credit goes to to its many long-term residents and their multi-generational businesses.

Taking a Testaccio food and market tour allowed us to dig deeper into the neighborhood’s hidden culinary treasures. And, as a fun bonus, the tour introduced our nephew Max, fresh off the train from his studies in Florence , to some of Rome’s most iconic dishes .

Testaccio Food and Market Tour Guide in Rome

Getting a good vibe when we met our Devour guide, AnnaMaria, we suspected that we were in for a few fun hours of food exploration in Rome, or as she called it – a lasagna city with lots of layers. Spoiler Alert – Our suspicion was correct.

Hungry Like The Wolf

Testaccio Wolf Mural in Rome

We arrived at Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice, the designated Testaccio meeting, point hungry. It was a good move as we’d be making seven food stops during the tour. And, since legend has it that a she-wolf had a key role in founding Rome, we joked that we were hungry like the wolf.

Apparently, the joke was on us since we quickly encountered two of Rome’s most famous wolves. Not only did we meet in front of a statue recreating the infamous she-wolf of Romulus and Remus fame, but we also walked past a hungry she-wolf mural painted by Belgian street artist Roa.

Don’t worry. We weren’t hungry for long. It was still morning in Testaccio or as we now call it – it was maritozzi time.

Food Stop 1 – Typical Roman Breakfast at Pasticeria Linari

Maritozzi at Linari in Rome

Italians don’t typically eat big breakfasts. Most start their days with a quick pastry and coffee at the neighborhood bar. While that pastry is usually a cornetto in much of Italy, Romans go a different route with their local favorite – the maritozzo . We followed this trend at our first stop, Pasticceria Linari , a popular Testaccio pastry shop that opened in 1971.

Fun Fact A maritozzo is essentially a brioche bun split down the middle and stuffed with a prodigious amount of whipped cream. Romans have been eating maritozzi since the 19th century when suitors would present buns filled with cream… and a ring… to their intendeds in early March.

Since we had a lot of food ahead, we were pleased that AnnaMaria split the maritozzi in half before serving them to us along with our coffees. Of course, that didn’t stop us from getting cream on our faces which was part of the fun.

Market Time At Mercato di Testaccio

Inside Testaccio Market in Rome

Originally a neighborhood market when it opened in 2012, Mercato di Testaccio (i.e. the Testaccio Market) attracts locals from throughout the city as well as a throng of global food travelers. Some seek locally sourced artisan products while others linger over lunch. The most savvy shoppers come to this market to buy food and stay to eat foods like suppli and porchetta sandwiches.

We were happy to be in AnnaMaria’s capable hands during the tour. Although we’d shopped at the market prior to the tour, this would be our first time interacting with some of its vendors.

Food Stop 2 – Prosciutto And Cheese Tasting At Mania Del Gusto

Cured Ham Sample at Testaccio Market in Rome

Rome is in Italy so it made perfect sense for the first market stop to involve hand-cut prosciutto and cheese. We’ll call it a morning aperitivo since we sipped wine at this stop too.

To be clear, we didn’t just nibble on one prosciutto slice and one piece of cheese. Instead, the team at Mania del Gusto welcomed us to the market with two hand-sliced meats, one sourced from Parma and the other from Umbria, as well as ricotta, mozzarella and provolone cheese samples.

Food Stop 3 – Pizza Three Ways At Artenio

Pizza Samples at Testaccio Market in Rome

Ah, pizza. How do we love thee? Let us count the ways. First, we love you when you’re topped with tomato sauce. Second, we love you when you’re topped with potato. And, third, we love you topped with onions.

Okay, these aren’t actually our favorite pizza toppings. But the pizzettes , i.e. miniature pizzas, we ate at the Artenio stall had these three toppings and they hit our pizza spot. Our favorite was the pizzette rosse topped with tomato sauce. The stall also sells breads stuffed with olives and cookies baked with wine, both of which justify a future return visit.

Discover our favorite Rome pizzerias .

Food Stop 4 – Cherry Tomatoes At Frutteria Campagna Amica

Max Eats a Tomato During Our Testaccio Market Tour in Rome

Keeping the tomato theme going, our stop at Frutteria Campagna Amica was all about the fruit that doubles as a vegetable. Temporarily distracted by the stall’s array of seasonal zucchini flowers and figs, we rallied to sample red and yellow cherry tomatoes.

Both tomatoes were good but we preferred the candy-like red cherry tomatoes. We later learned that all of the stall’s produce is grown near Lazio’s border with Umbria and Abruzzo. Fantastico !

Food Stop 5 – Panini At Mordi E Vai

Mardi and Vai Stall at Testaccio Market in Rome

Stopping at Mordi e Vai was a tour highlight for us since it was already on our Rome eating list. The popular market stall sells a range of panini including the late Sergiio Esposito’s signature Panino con l ‘ Allesso di Scottona filled with slow-cooked beef and chicory.

Panini at Testaccio Market in Rome

AnnaMaria offered us two panini choices. We could try either the stall’s signature sandwich or one filled with tripe. We all opted for the signature sandwich and it didn’t disappoint. Even Max, who’s not usually much of a sandwich fan, approved.

Water Fountain Lesson

Tour Guide and Water Fountain in Rome

Our next stop didn’t involve food, unless you consider water to be a food, and yet it may end up being the most memorable stop of the tour. At this stop, AnnaMaria taught us how to properly drink from a nasone , i.e. a Roman water fountain.

Sure, anybody can fill a water bottle with the clear liquid. Thanks to this lesson, we can now drink water from a nasone like a Rome local.

Fun Fact Rome has more than 2,000 nasoni sprinkled (pun intended) throughout the city.

Food Stop 6 – Pasta and Wine At Checchino Dal 1887

Owner at Checchino Dal 1887 in Rome

Although the market portion of our tour ended at Mordi e Vai, the food stops weren’t over. In fact, our next stop at Checchino Dal 1887 was easily the culinary highlight of the tour thanks to proprietor Francesco Mariani.

Mariani didn’t just warmly welcome us to his family’s restaurant. He also introduced us to oxtail ragu, a classic Rome dish that the restaurant claims to have invented.

Pasta with Fork at Checchino Dal 1887 in Rome

The claim has validity. Checchino Dal 1887 was located near the Mattatoi slaughterhouse when it opened in 1887. Since then and for six generations so far, its specialty has been fifth quarter cuisine.

Originally cooked out of necessity for people who couldn’t afford more popular animal cuts, this cuisine, in which every part of the animal is used, embraces parts that include the head, tail, legs and offals.

Choosing Wine at Checchino Dal 1887 in Rome

Sitting outside at two long tables, our tour group ate bowls generously filled with oxtail ragu while Mariani regaled us with colorful stories about the historic neighborhood and his family’s equally historic restaurant. He did this while pouring locally produced wine, both red and white, selected from the restaurant’s ancient wine cellar.

Food Stop 7 – Gelato At Brivido Gelateria

Owner at Brivido Gelateria in Rome

Every Italian food tour should end with artisan gelato. Naturally lower in fat, the frozen Italian sweet treat doesn’t require vast amounts of stomach space. Plus, artisan gelato tastes great.

Our final stop at Brivido Gelateria fulfilled this gelato requirement with a bang. A neighborhood fixture since it opened in 1986, the female-owned shop serves a range of flavors that include the usual suspects like pistachio and zabaglione as well more unique flavors like eggnog and salted peanut, some of which are sugar-free and vegan.

Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time in the city, I feel like you’d be missing out by not taking this experience! I’d been to Rome before this, but after taking this tour I realized just how much I’d been missing out on  real  Italian cuisine!

I was going to all the “best-rated” Italian places in the area, but they were all the typical touristy spots that charge you an arm and a leg for dishes that taste pretty similar to what I could get at the Olive Garden.

With this guided food tour, we met up with our guide near the Cipra metro station where we were able to explore the area and sample over 20 different foods!

Expand To See More See Less

At La Nicchia Cafe, we were able to try the Mozzarella di Bufala campana, tons of tasty prosecco, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic, and so much more!

My personal favorite was the Ricotta with white truffle-infused honey which was creamy, sweet, and savory.

Bonci Pizzarium is owned by the “Michelangelo of Pizza”, and was recommended by countless food icons, including the legendary Anthony Bourdain!

With nearly 100 different combinations, you’ll get to try pizzas you haven’t even thought of before! La Tradizione is the place to go for cheeses and cured meats paired with amazing fine wines, and Il Segreto near the Vatican provides on-point, al dente pasta with even more wine!

  • Departure Time: 4:00 PM
  • Includes:  13 samples at 7 different tasting locations, Wine, beer and water, Local English-speaking guide, Rome – A food lover’s guide

This next tour is actually the first tour of Trastevere, and with their expertise and vast knowledge, it’s obvious they have over a decade of experience under their belt.

The Rome Twilight Trastevere Food Tour with Eating Europe  is more focused on quality over quantity, so you won’t get to try as many different types of foods.

However, the ones you  do  try are made to be savored and not rushed, and are well worth the time spent enjoying and learning about.

Trastevere is a lively neighborhood known for its nightlife, beautiful architecture, and is also one of the best “foodie” neighborhoods in Rome. However, with this tour you’ll be receiving VIP access to some of the area’s trendiest, most well-reputed food institutions.

Start off the tour by meeting up with your guide and learn some insider tips into the best types of dishes found in this area and what to look out for.

We met up at the Isola Tiberina, where we walked together with our guide and the rest of our group across the Ponte Cestio, crossing the river to Trastevere.

The first stop of the day was at Via dei Vascellari, where we kicked things off with a toast with DOC prosecco and plenty of traditional Roman dishes at Da Enzo al 29. It’s been serving Romans for nearly 100 years and is by far the most well-known trattoria in the entire city.

I loved trying delicious homemade cookies at the famous Via della Luce, followed by the amazing roast pork and beer at the Via Natale del Grande.

The supplí was phenomenal, along with the various pasta dishes and gelato after exploring the area. We even learned how gourmet gelato came to Roma, and the differences between “real” and “fake” gelato!

  • Includes:  Private Personalized Tour, local guide, 6 or 10 food & drinks tastings of high-quality local products – depends on option booked, vegetarian alternatives available, only you and your guide, carbon neutral tour organized by a B-Corp certified company

I find that this tour works well for anyone, no matter your age, background, or knowledge of Roman dishes. The Award-Winning Private Food Tour of Rome: 6 or 10 Tastings  is perfect for first-time visitors who are not only interested in the food scene, but Rome’s history.

If you’d like to learn about local culture more in-depth than what most Rome tours offer, you’re in the right place. I really like the fact that even though it isn’t a particularly lengthy tour, they even come and pick you up from your hotel.

This is a huge weight off my shoulders, especially when I’m traveling in a foreign country and don’t know how to get around very well, yet. This casual strolling tour perfectly showed off authentic Roman culture, providing me with a perspective I hadn’t seen of this city before.

I’ve always felt like food is a very personal thing, so it made sense to take a private culinary tour with a local foodie who took us to various stops to sample dishes.

We met our guide at Campo de’ Fiori where we started things off with a quick tour of the square, which was exemplary of Rome’s outdoor market traditions.

We then headed to Ponte Sisto, which crosses over the river Tiber and offers beautiful views of the city on the way to Trastevere.

Once in Trastevere – one of the biggest foodie neighborhoods in Rome – we went through and tried some classics like buffalo mozzarella and gelato. After that, we checked out Palazzo Farnese, where we learned about and tried various dishes and drinks.

After all that, we all laughed and chatted while making our way to the Chiesa di Santa Margherita Catholic church, admiring the beautiful 12th-century mosaics and opulent interior.

4. Small-Group Rome Food Tour: Trastevere Campo Fiori Jewish Ghetto

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure: Via Dei Baullari, 106, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  Morning & Evening: 15 samples in 5 locations with with pasta & local fried (VIP restaurant entrance), 3 quality wine tastings at different spots, English-speaking local guide, best restaurants guidebook & cookbook for free, Campo de Fiori Market tour in morning departure

How does a small-group setting while venturing through the best architecture, food, and culture Rome has to offer sound?

You’ll get to experience all that and more with the Small-Group Rome Food Tour: Trastevere Campo Fiori Jewish Ghetto ! I find this tour to be the perfect date-night activity and a great alternative to going out to a nice restaurant!

The tour clocks in at around 4 hours, but I appreciate that they offer both morning and afternoon tour start times to make it easier to fit into busy schedules. Regardless of the start time you choose, though, I highly recommend arriving very hungry as you’ll be trying a lot!

However, I’d even be willing to recommend this selection if you or someone else in your party is a big history buff, as our guide covered a lot.

We started things off in Piazza Farnese, where we met with our guide and headed towards the first stop in Campo de’ Fiori which is known for its legendary outdoor food market.

This is the best place to get fresh vegetables, meats, and cheeses. We were able to purchase items (if we wanted), meet some vendors, try samples of various foods, and soak in the culture of doing “grocery shopping” here.

We then arrived in Trastevere, which is incredibly charming thanks to its cobblestone streets, beautiful homes, and some of the most delectable restaurants and cafes in the world.

Our guide led the way through some of the most well-kept secrets that I’d probably never have tried, otherwise.

Getting to see the Jewish Quarter was enriching, learning about the unique history of this neighborhood while trying delicacies like supplí, fried artichokes, codfish, and much more.

5. Food & Wine Tour by the Vatican City

  • Departure: La Nicchia Cafe, Via Cipro, 4L, 00136 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: Between 4:30 to 7:30 PM
  • Includes:  Food tasting, Wine tasting, Snacks, Bottled water, Alcoholic Beverages

I’ll admit that food isn’t one of the first things that come to mind when I think of Vatican City. However, I was surprised that the surrounding neighborhoods of Prati and Trionfale are filled with amazing wine and cuisine selections.

The Food & Wine Tour by the Vatican City  is perfect for any age, background, and food preference – even offering substitutions for just about any allergies and food restrictions!

If you’re already planning on going to see the Vatican Museums, this culinary tour is a must-do! We started our tour by meeting our guide at La Nicchia Cafe, which is known for whipping up some of the finest Roman dishes and drinks!

We definitely started things off right, with a 30-year aged balsamic vinegar drizzled over Parmigiano Reggiano, along with truffles, buffalo mozzarella, and DOCG Frascati superior wine.

By this point, I trusted my guide to take me pretty much anywhere, displaying her vast knowledge on all things “Rome” and “Roman food”, along with being fun and very personable.

Our next stop was the Ristorante Pizzeria Falcone, where we were able to try typical Roman pizza (not shy of any kind of sauces, veggies, proteins, cheeses, etc.). I was very intrigued at just how different it was from Neopolitan pizza, but I was very much a fan!

After this, we went to Bonci Pizzarium, which is known as Rome’s #1 pizza and offers a massive selection of different types of – you guessed it: pizza.

Our last stop of the day was at the Hostaria Dino e Tony, where we reveled in handmade pasta dishes and tiramisu, washed down by some of the most delicious wine I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying.

Overall, this was an amazing tour right from the very beginning, with plenty of fun stories to keep us engaged throughout!

6. The Roman Food Tour including Visit to the Trionfale Food Market

  • Departure:  Via Cipro, 4L, 00136 Roma RM, Italy
  • Departure Time: 10:45 AM
  • Includes:  Food tasting, wine tasting, tour escort/host

If I were just in Rome for 1 day and I wanted to try as many Roman dishes as possible, I’d probably take this next tour. The Roman Food Tour including Visit to the Trionfale Food Market is the perfect balance between entertainment, history, architecture, and of course, food.

We were able to try nearly 20 different types of dishes, and while that may sound like a ton of food, was digested quite easily thanks to us strolling around in between each stop!

Our tour started off in the morning, which was quite a bit different from any of the other food tours in Rome that I’d taken! This made it easier to schedule into a busy itinerary, as people seem to always have plans in the evening over morning.

It made sense then that after meeting our guide at Venue La Nicchia Cafe, we started things off by trying a typical Roman breakfast!

I briefly explained La Nicchia Cafe up above, but this is the place to go if you’re interested in tasting aged balsamic, truffles, Genovese pesto, buffalo mozzarella, and some of the finest wine.

After this, we strolled on over to the Bonci Pizzarium, which is listed at the number one pizzeria in Rome – which is really saying something if you know about Romans’ passion for pizza!

At Bonci Pizzarium, you’ll see and get to sample pizzas you literally won’t see anywhere else in the world! After this, head to the Mercato Trionfale and learn about this local market and how everything operates.

Al Giardino Del Gatto e La Volpe Srl is one of the most well-respected, family-owned restaurants known for homemade pasta with fine wine (and they definitely delivered!). To follow all those “salty” dishes up, what better way to celebrate a great day than with some artisanal gelato?!

7. Rome Walking Food Tour With Secret Food Tours

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Piazza Navona, 14, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 10:30 or 11:30 AM
  • Includes:  3 types of homemade pizza, fried risotto balls (supplí), Italian cheeses, cannoli, artisanal gelato, 2 types of Roman pastas, the Secret Dish, espresso/cappuccino, finest Italian wines, water, non-alcoholic drinks

Last but certainly not least, I bring you the shortest tour of its kind! The Rome Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours was simply a blast, and while it only lasts 2.4 hours, really packs a punch!

It’s a fantastic way to get to try true Roman fare while venturing through the city’s most unique districts, complete with breathtaking architecture, rich culture, and friendly locals.

While this tour doesn’t include a complimentary hotel pickup, our meetup point at Campo de’ Fiori next to Piazza Navona in Rome was very conveniently located. We then asked our guide some questions, got acquainted, and set off to the Jewish ghetto established in 1555.

Learning about the Roman/Jewish ghetto was quite striking, though it was surprisingly established in 555 in Rione Sant’Angelo.

We got to see so many unique and hidden places in Rome, thanks to our expert guide leading the way. She did so in a way that made me trust her, and her energy and passion for Rome were contagious and set a great mood for the entire group.

You can opt to take a small tour or a private tour, and with the private tour, you get a ton of input into your preferences and receive a more customized experience.

Our foodie guide led us through Trastevere, the Jewish Ghetto, and Campo de’ Fiori, which surprisingly all had very different vibes and food dishes. We tried fresh pizzas and pastas, cold meats, tons of cheese, and supplí which I can’t get enough of.

To follow it up, we had a little “dessert” of a tasty cappuccino and creamy gelato! If you want to learn more about Rome’s multilayered history, make sure to add this tour to your list!

Luca (Luke) was a fabulous guide, friendly, superb English and very knowledgeable. The food was fantastic, we only had room for small portions of the enormous and utterly delicious main courses, as we had eaten so many ‘snacks’ along the way!  - Mark Camp
I thought the guide was great and that we learned a lot as opposed to just eating. - Neal Schopick
Absolutely loved the food tour with Valentina. The tour is well-designed, with amazing food, such interesting bits about the history and information about the food and set in a great, off-the-beaten-track part of Rome which is lovely to discover. Rome Testaccio Food & Market Tour with Devour Tours – Our Experience + Full Review

We always like to taste some local treats and discover new restaurants we didn’t know about. So we took the Rome Testaccio Food & Market Tour with Devour Tours to go deeper into the local culinary traditions and, surprisingly, find a new fantastic restaurant in an area we thought we knew everything about.

Are you in Rome and craving the authentic luscious dishes you’ve read about? In Testaccio, you are sure to find them prepared according to tradition. Being food one of the main attractions of the area, a culinary-inspired walk is the best way to delve deeper into a lesser-known aspect and side of Rome.

Recently, we have been visiting the neighborhood often because we are researching more of its history so, since gastronomy is so entangled with the local culture, taking a Testaccio food tour seemed a good idea.

Read everything about our own experience and why we think you should take one, too.

Table of Contents

Why a Testaccio food tour

Testaccio is one of those neighborhoods in Rome where you feel and breathe the most authentic Roman spirit. It goes without saying that what you are going to eat in Testaccio is genuine Roman food that is still proudly made according to tradition.

If you want to discover no-frill, hearty Roman cuisine, look no further, Testaccio is your place.

A food tour in Testaccio reflects all that. You are going to walk around a Roman neighborhood with no tourists, you will be stopped by locals who want to tell you a bit about their area, and you will even notice here and there some locals looking at you with a surprised face. Right before the tour started, a local elder felt compelled to tell us that it was Saint Francis day and that he is Italy’s saint patron.

Image: Seeing Fontana delle Anfore one of the things to do in Testaccio

Geographically, you are not far from Rome’s Centro Storico , but the experience you will have in Testaccio is nowhere near the one you have around the Spanish Steps .

Testaccio has retained its traditional spirit but in recent years its old buildings have been revamped and turned into cultural spaces such as museums or venues for public events. The proximity with Ostiense , famous for its vestiges of Rome’s industrial archaeology , shows how much history Testaccio shares with both Ostiense and the nearby Garbatella, the neighborhood where workers would live.

We wanted to soak in the Roman vibe, dig deeper into the past of a working-class neighborhood that has thousands of years of history under its belt, and try traditional foods the right way. This Rome Testaccio Food & Market Tour has met our expectations and we are confident that will meet yours, too.

Don’t miss our article about all the things to do in Testaccio .

Our experience in this Rome Testaccio Food & Market Tour

We would have spotted our guide, Manuela, even if she wasn’t holding the Devour Tours sign. Born and raised in Rome, Manuela didn’t wait long to show her Italianness. First things first. Nothing in Italy starts without coffee. And Manuela agrees.

“Guys, without our morning coffee, we don’t even remember our name”, she told us pulling out of her bag a single-dose Moka coffee machine. Italian families wake up at the sound of the Moka being emptied and cleaned from the coffee of the night before, being loaded again, of the fire being turned, of the hissing of the ready coffee, and at the distinct fragrance that permeates the air all over the house.

With her very Italian hand gestures that accompanied us all throughout the tour and some Italian words thrown in here and there ( allora, andiamo! ), Manuela was ready to kick off our experience with a typical breakfast experience at one of the best pastry shops in the area.

You can book the same Testaccio food tour we did by clicking here !

An Italian breakfast

As Italians, my husband and I had our first shot and were ready to enjoy our second espresso and pastry at the excellent Linari pastry shop as the first stop of the Rome Testaccio Food & Market Tour.

We were asked to show up 15 minutes earlier so that our tour could start at 9.30 am sharp. This allowed us to both eat an Italian breakfast and experience it by being part of the morning rush hour where everybody quickly has their coffee intake and heads to work.

Italian breakfast is fast and sweet, often at the bar it’s our second breakfast and we usually have just a coffee. When we want the full treat, caffè e cornetto (espresso and croissant) are in order.

Image: Breakfast during Testaccio food tour with Devour Tours

For the group, Manuela ordered an espresso and half a maritozzo each, a typical, cream-rich Roman pastry. Since we had already had our breakfast right there while waiting for the tour to start, and we ordered a croissant and a maritozzo , for me and my husband, she ordered the aptly named “Monte Testaccio”, a round-shaped pastry filled with cream and ricotta cheese invented by the same Linari bakery.

Mercato Testaccio market tour

Our second stop brought us to the fantastic Mercato Testaccio, one of the best food markets in Rome . Although here you can find also homeware and clothes, Testaccio’s market is mainly focused on fresh and seasonal fruits and veggies, pasta, cheese and cold cuts, wine, beer, and stalls selling ready meals.

Image: Mordie e Vai street food in Testaccio market in Rome

We started our visit at the famous Mordi e Vai shop founded by Sergio, a retired butcher from Rome’s mattatoio , the city’s former main slaughterhouse. The quintessential street food place, here, you can fill your panino (Italian for a sandwich) with the Roman classic of your choice and have it either sitting on one of the benches in front or on the go.

Image: Veggie stall of Mercato Testaccio during Testaccio food tour with Devour Tours

As Manuela told us, the bravest could try fillings such as trippa alla Romana (Roman-style tripe) or scottona alla picchiapò , one of the most popular “recycling” recipes of the local cuisine. If you are less brave, you can opt for the evergreen grandma’s meatballs or one of the most famous classics carbonara or amatriciana .

However, it’s advisable that you refrain from ordering the latter because you are going to find them for lunch dressing your pasta together with a third secret option.

market tour rome

Our tour of the market didn’t finish there. Actually, it had just started. We carried on to an organic fresh fruits and veggies stall from the Lazio region. Here, we were shown the local produce and tried different types of cherry tomatoes, one red and one yellow, as well as the first oranges of the season.

Moving forward, we stopped for a taste of pizza by the slice in three different toppings (potatoes, onions, and tomatoes, the popular pizza rossa ), and next, to try three different types of cheese: ricotta, buffalo mozzarella, and caciotta .

Image: Rome Testaccio food and market tour by Devour Tours

The last stop inside Mercato Testaccio was at what once called “ pizzicagnolo “, the deli in charge of all the most high-quality regional products. Here, we tried two types of prosciutto crudo (ham), one from Parma and one more local and with a stronger kick from Norcia. Both of them were strictly sliced by hand so the pieces were thicker and more irregular than if cut with the machine.

Don’t miss our guide to the best street food places in Rome !

A traditional lunch

By lunchtime, we were pretty full, but a traditional meal was being prepared for us at the lovely restaurant La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio in the heart of Testaccio, adjacent to the very famous and historic Felice a Testaccio .

One of the reasons I like to take tours where I live (Rome) even though I can pride myself on knowing the city quite well, it’s because I know there is always something new to discover. This is not only a new opening or a recently dug-out ancient ruin.

market tour rome

Like in this case, I was very glad to be introduced to La Fraschetta restaurant: even though definitely not a new opening (it’s been there for at least 10 years), it was a pleasant surprise that I plan to visit again.

Inspired by the rustic vibe of the Castelli Romani south of Rome, we reached inside through a courtyard covered with green branches and leaves. The “countryside-style” entrance shouldn’t mislead you, inside, the restaurant is finely decorated in wood and shows vintage pictures and hanging traditional wine jugs ( fraschette ).

Our trinity of pasta dishes included rigatoni all’amatriciana and creamy carbonara both served with a sprinkle of crunchy guanciale (cured pork cheek) on top and a third dish suitable for vegetarians too, chicory and pecorino cheese spaghetti.

Gelato as a dessert

When Italians have lunch or dinner at a restaurant, if they want to round off their meal with a dessert, they pick one from the same restaurant’s menu. This time, however, instead of opting for a dessert from La Fraschetta’s menu, we headed to arguably the best gelato shop in Testaccio and one of the best gelaterias in Rome , Brivido.

Image: Gelato during Rome Testaccio Food and Market Tour

Artisan and all-natural, Brivido offers a fantastic choice for a large range of customers. Not only the usual dairy and egg-based options then, but also plenty of flavors that don’t contain milk or eggs. The vegan options go beyond the fruit flavors, which are usually dairy-free, but include also favorite ingredients like chocolate, coffee, pistachio, and peanut.

If you feel gluttonous enough, you can dip your gelato into liquid chocolate and top it with fresh cream, both dairy-based and vegan.

Read everything about the other experience we took with Devour Tours: Rome Pasta-Making Class in Trastevere .

Cultural interludes

The food stops that define this walk around Testaccio are connected to each other by cultural and historical pieces of information. These are not mere tales but are necessary to understand what you are eating and why you are eating it here. Food is culture, and with their Rome Testaccio Food & Market Tour, Devour Tours second this.

So we learned about the history of the Testaccio neighborhood, the Emporium ancient Roman river port, and how the Monte dei Cocci, the Italian for Mount of Shards, was made. Thanks to its river port, Testaccio has been from ancient times when the terracotta jars, or amphorae, full of wine, oil, and wheat reached Rome.

Fast forward some 2000 years, we saw one of the most important vestiges of recent Roman industrial archaeology, the former slaughterhouse now turned into a museum, and we learned about Rome’s culinary tradition known as “ cucina povera “, the poor man’s cuisine.

A big role in Roman traditional gastronomy is played by the offals, known in Rome as quinto quarto , all the parts that the wealthy disregarded and the workers of the slaughterhouse were often paid with. And since hunger increases creativity, many of the traditional dishes are the legacy of the poor.

Our tour ended in Piazza Testaccio in front of the iconic Fontana delle Anfore, Amphorae Fountain, the symbol of Testaccio’s history and essence.

Is this tour for you?

If you want to discover the real local food as opposed to the tourist traps, a food tour led by a local expert is always a good idea. Here we help you decide whether you should book this tour or not!

This Rome Testaccio food tour is for you if:

  • You are hungry. Please arrive hungry, or you won’t be able to fully appreciate the local treats that abound on this tour.
  • You like to go offbeat. You barely see any tourists, merely some if there are other tours, but really nothing compared to the city center. Yet, Testaccio is a very interesting neighborhood boasting ancient history as well as playing an important role in Rome’s modern and contemporary culture.
  • You want to go traditional. Testaccio is all about tradition, an authentic neighborhood that retained much of its original charm and flavors. You can hardly find a better area for a traditional food tour.
  • You want to know about Rome culture. The history and culture of Testaccio start thousands of years ago, perfectly
  • You want to discover non-touristy restaurants. Part of the tour is to discover local eateries and since Testaccio is not very touristy, also the restaurants you will visit serve traditional foods.

This Rome Testaccio food tour is not for you if:

  • You are vegan. The tour adapts to vegetarians, pescatarians, and if you have intolerances, but if you are following a strictly plant-based diet and are not able/willing to make an exception, you would be able to only try the pizza al taglio . Everywhere else, there is either cheese or meat (or both!).
  • You don’t feel like walking. It’s not a huge walk, but during the three hours of the tour, there will be plenty of standing and also walking. You will sit only at the last stop at the restaurant for lunch.

For more culinary experiences, check out our guide to the best food tours of Rome .

  • Giuliana D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Street food and spectacular view! This tour exceeded all expectations! Our guide expertly led us through the streets weaving tales of centuries and each bite offered a taste of tradition and history of Roman street food. From supli to sweet jewish pizza...wow!! And then came the grand finale🥁...a rooftop in Trastevere! We were treated with an aperitivo and a hands-on lesson in cocktail crafting. The view was breathtaking! This was an unforgettable night! I loved everything about it - the duration, the locations, the food sampled, the host, the specific dishes they chose to highlight and the finale of the evening. • strictlysardinia 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Delicious food! What a fabulous introduction to a lesser known side of Rome! We explored the Jewish Ghetto, lesser known places in the historic center, and Trastevere through local cuisine. The food we tried was delicious (I can hardly say what I liked best - tough choice between the carciofi alla giudia and the baccalà fritto) but overall the company, the guide, the food and the sights made this a memorable experience. They 'automatically rescheduled' me for a different day that I wasn't even in the country (although even if I were there, I would have already had other plans!) and I needed to contact customer service to get a refund. Since the notice was so short, other similar classes during a similar time were all booked up, meaning that we are missing out on an experience we were greatly looking forward to. Chiara's personality, story-telling, historical knowledge and humor made the tour a delight. We loved strolling around this lovely neighborhood and being able to sample some of the best food and wine Rome has to offer. We learned all kinds of great tips for dining delightfully for the rest of our time in the city and ducked into some truly local establishments for a feel of the "real" Rome. At all the stops, the businesses were prepped and ready for us, and there was enough walking between stops not to feel like we were just stuffing ourselves non-stop. We loved the pace and experience overall. The quality of city food tours can vary drastically, and I found this experience with Devour to be one of my best in memory. Read more Written April 3, 2024

Rome Cooking Class

Officially licensed guides, private tours of italy, flexible rescheduling, rome cooking class with local market experience & pasta making.

A very special Roman cooking experience where you will  visit our incredible local markets with a native chef  to source the finest fresh ingredients before hitting the kitchen to cook up a storm!

  • Guided visit to Trionfale market
  • Choose the finest locally sourced food
  • Learn how to hand-make pasta
  • Cook your ingredients with a native chef
  • ALL food and wine included

The Ultimate Rome Cooking Class Experience

First off, you will  visit one of the best local markets in Rome : the Mercato Trionfale.   Learn how a true Roman cook sources the best produce , what the most popular recipes are and their history, how Roman cuisine differs to other regional Italian cuisines, and how to literally separate the ‘wheat from the chaff’ to buy the best possible produce.

Amidst the bustling market, as you weave your way in and around the stalls and the numerous locals doing their weekly shopping, you’ll feel like part of the tapestry of daily Roman life. Experiencing the sensation that you’re living in a city rather than visiting is a luxury in itself and  your private chef  will help you fit right in.

Explore Traditional Roman Markets With Your Guide

Share a joke or two with the vendors and attune your ear to the sing-song of romanesco, the dialect of the city. Be tempted by the multi-colour palette of both the charismatic Romans and the fruits and vegetables on offer.

At the market you will eye up, taste, and purchase the ingredients for your lunch and then head to a professional local kitchen, but not before taking a leisurely stroll through the beloved district of Prati, often thought of as one of Rome’s best kept secrets with its artisan boutiques, uptown shops, hip wine bars, and all-around casual elegance. It’ll also help you work up an appetite for the cooking and eating that awaits!

Pasta Making & Cooking Class

Once you hit the kitchen, you will learn in the cooking class how to make hand-made pasta from scratch as well as a selection of other dishes (based on seasonality) while cooking with local Roman wine…you might even put some in the food!

When you’re ready to say buon appetito, you’ll be sure to confirm the theory that a meal tastes better if you make it with passion!

Make sure you come hungry and ready to put your ‘mani in pasta’ ‘your hands in the dough’ during this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Campo de’ Fiori Market Rome: Location and Hours

Campo de’ Fiori market is one of the oldest markets in Rome. Since 1869 people coming from the Roman countryside used to go to this market to sell their products such as herbs and vegetables. The name – Fiori means Flowers in English – originates from the daisies, poppies and other wildflowers that once graced the square, which is overlooked by noble palaces belonging to the prestigious Orsini family.

The square became a place of trade and business. Several inns, taverns and hotels were built. Still today Campo de’ Fiori is a lively area in Rome, where you can shop, try food samples or just grab something to drink at night.

But the square of Campo de’ Fiori was also a place of public executions. The most known and recalled is the one concerning the philosopher Giordano Bruno, accused of heresy and burned at the stake on February 17th 1600. The bronze statue named after him sits at the center of the piazza in memory of the philosopher to celebrate the freedom of thought and wisdom.

Why This Unique Tour In Rome Was My Favorite Way To Explore The City

R ome has a rich history and vibrant culture that can transport you to a different era. Long before I ever visited Rome, what I knew of the ancient city came from the movies. I’m a classic movie buff, and Roman Holiday , the 1953 romantic comedy, is my favorite film.

The story unfolds as Princess Ann, who, during a visit to Rome, escapes her guardians to explore the city. Enter a handsome newspaper reporter who whisks her away on the back of his Vespa. I’ll never forget the images of iconic landmarks in the eternal city whizzing by as the movie unfolds.

On a recent visit, I found that exploring Rome by Vespa Sidecar Tour can make you feel like you’re living a similar fantasy.

My private Vespa Sidecar Tour was provided by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi as part of a hosted stay at the beautiful hotel. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour

The Vespa Sidecar tour offers a unique way to discover the city’s famous landmarks, hidden gems, and picturesque squares. As you motor through the bustling city, you can imagine yourself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure.

The company’s owner, Luca Di Trapano, explained that the Vespa Sidecar Tour was born in a flash of inspiration after 2 decades of giving tours in Rome. He thought the concept was genius but later learned his idea was 45 years too late.

The makers of the Vespa stopped producing the model equipped with a sidecar in 1968. Not easily deterred, he persevered and brought his dream to reality. Since 2018, Luca has welcomed over 20,000 passengers on board without a single accident. He told me, “It is like having sailed through the streets of Rome with four or five gigantic cruise ships!”

The tours are 3 hours, depending on traffic. The price is 110 euros per person (about $117) on the small group tour (12 guests max). You can take the tour solo as I did or with a companion or group. Trade places halfway through for a new perspective. A private tour’s price depends on the number of guests.

Here are several reasons why you should explore Rome on this unique Vespa tour.

Easy Meeting Point

Piazza della Repubblica is the tour meeting point. The square is well-connected and easy for drop-offs by taxis and vehicles. Take the subway Line A to the Repubblica-Teatro dell’Opera stop. It’s just a 2-minute walk from the Central Termini Railway Station.

Pro Tip: If you want somewhere to stay close by, I recommend Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel . A restored 19th-century, crescent-shaped palazzo, it fronts Piazza della Repubblica, where the Vespa tour starts. At the assigned time, I met my guide, Alessio, at the concierge desk. My chariot, i.e. baby blue Vespa, was waiting just outside.

The Iconic Landmarks Of Rome

Exploring the highlights of the Eternal City, we visited 12 sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens. There were several opportunities to stop, stretch our legs, and linger, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

It’s A Blast!

When exploring the beautiful city of Rome, I loved all the astonished looks on people’s faces as we made our way down tight alleys and broad avenues. I felt like a movie star — everyone was smiling, waving, and snapping our photo. We must have been quite a sight; something special to share with family members when you get home.

Avoid The Crowds

What’s the best way to avoid crowds and see a different side of Rome? See it on a Vespa! If you’re fearless, you could rent one yourself. But my advice? Enlist a pro. You will feel much safer riding next to or behind someone who understands the ins and outs of Rome’s streets, where locals think traffic lanes are merely suggestions.

It’s A Beautiful Ride

The Vespa is a classic: These stunning coupes from Italy are iconic on the streets of Rome. Piaggio & Co. started making the Vespa after WWII as cheap, affordable transportation. Eventually, in 1953, the hit movie Roman Holiday showed the world how great a Vespa could be, resulting in record sales. Like the Colosseum, the Italian scooter has remained a part of Italy’s landscape. You will feel like an authentic Italian in the sidecar of a Vespa.

Unique And Unforgettable Way To See The Eternal City

Unlike larger vehicles, a Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As you zip through the streets, you’ll experience the city in an exciting and unique way. Your guide will share his knowledge of the city’s history and culture, providing insights into the backstories of the pivotal figures in the Roman Empire.

A Driver And Official Guide Rolled Into One

My driver, Alessio, wasn’t just a history buff: He’s also an official guide, which means he’s been trained to lead tours and provide in-depth information on all the sites you’ll see. He knows how to keep you engaged, entertained, and informed, making your Vespa tour an unforgettable experience. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating facts, historical anecdotes, and his favorite neighborhoods and restaurants. With his expertise and passion for sharing the city’s rich history, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind adventure that you’ll remember for years to come.

Radio-Connected Modern Whispers

As we cruised along the streets of Rome, Alessio provided commentary directly into my ear through a modern whisper system. He pointed out the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square where the Pope makes his Sunday address. It was chilling to see the balcony above the Piazza Venezia, where Mussolini delivered his most famous speech, the declaration of war on France and Britain in 1940.

A Sense Of Freedom And Excitement

Take in Rome’s sights, sounds, and smells from the open-air Vespa sidecar. You can enjoy the warm breeze on your face, witness the daily life of Romans, and immerse yourself in the city’s timeless beauty.

Pro Tip: Three hours is about the right amount of time to get a taste of Rome. I saw much more than I would in a walking tour, and it was a better experience than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour — we could go where large coaches could not.

I Felt Safe

The guides are expert drivers and the top-class helmets have face shields and disposable head covers. The passenger wears a seatbelt with a shoulder harness. We traveled at the most 24 miles per hour; just the right pace. Once you are on board, your unease fades away as you sit back, hold on, and enjoy the thrill of exploring Rome on a Vespa.

The Hidden Gems Of Rome

Rome is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and a real bucket-list destination. But allow some time to visit the hidden gems many tourists miss. Janiculum Hill, called the “Eighth Hill of Rome,” is a beautiful, often overlooked area with the best views of Rome. It’s a bit of a climb on foot, but on a Vespa, sit back and enjoy the ride. Piazzale Garibaldi in the center has the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument with a cannon that fires daily at noon. Don’t miss the 17th-century Aqua Paola Fountain.

Cappuccino And Cornetto

After visiting the Pantheon, we stopped for a cappuccino and cornetto, the traditional Roman breakfast choice. Our baby blue Vespa was parked nearby and I enjoyed watching how much attention it got from passersby. On the afternoon tours, customers are offered gelato instead.

Unforgettable Experience

This is the perfect gift for someone who has done everything and an unforgettable experience for curious travelers of all ages. You will carry home remarkable moments and fun memories.

Would I recommend Vespa Sidecar Tour? Absolutely. If this had been my first time in Rome, it would have given me a good overview of the places I would like to return to for a deeper dive. I have been to Rome several times, but until now, I’ve never seen the eternal beauty of Rome from the seat of a Vespa sidecar. And the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain guarantees I’ll be back.
