A visit to Belize would not be complete without visiting a few Maya sites. All are spectacular and are rich in history and culture. Visiting these ancient cities, often located deep into the lush jungle, is a unique experience that will leave you speechless.

What’s great about the Mayan ruins in Belize is that you can climb the pyramids unlike most ones in Mexico and it’s also less frequented making the archaeological sites peaceful and quiet. So make sure to visit one or two during your stay in San Pedro.

San Pedro is usually where most visitors stay during their vacation in Belize and it’s a great base to explore the country further. In fact, you can get to most attractions in Belize via day tours from San Pedro, you just have to pick your favorites!

Read on to discover the best Mayan ruin tours from San Pedro, Belize that you shouldn’t miss during your trip!

The Best Mayan Ruin Tours From San Pedro, Belize

If booking tour online, make sure where the meeting point is. Most tours will start at the ferry terminal in Belize City so you’ll have to take the ferry on your own. You can check the water taxi schedule here >>

An alternative to tours is to take the ferry to Belize City where you can rent a car for the day and hire a guide directly on-site.

Caracol, Maya ruins, San Ignacio, Belize

Caracol, meaning snail in Spanish, was occupied since the Preclassic period and dominated the Peten region around the 6th and 7th century. At its pinnacle, the ancient city counted around 100,000 inhabitants and was one of the wealthiest city in the area.

Visiting this ancient Mayan ruin is a unique experience. Surrounded by jungle, the site is impressive. A lot of structures have been renovated, some stone masks were excavated, and you can climb most of the pyramids. The view from the highest one is just breathtaking.

To get there, you’ll either need to go through a tour or rent a 4-wheeler. The closest city is San Ignacio , but you can join a tour from San Pedro, Belize City or Placencia .

Xunantunich

Xunantunich, Maya ruins, San Ignacio, Belize

Xunantunich is by far my favorite Mayan ruin in Belize. Easy to access on your own, this ancient city should be added to your Belize bucket list. Located near the border with Guatemala, its name means “Stone woman” in Mayan. A legend says the ghost of a woman was often spotted there, disappearing into one of the structures.

Xunantunich used to be a major royal city and, contrary to most Maya city, continued to be inhabited after the Maya decline. The city is famous for its incredibly well-preserved frescoes on both sides of the main pyramid.

You can visit Xunantunich from pretty much everywhere in Belize via a tour or go on your own. In San Ignacio, take a bus or a shared taxi heading to Benque, ask to be dropped off at the river crossing point. Take the ferry (free) and walk for about 20 minutes to reach the site.

Cahal Pech, Maya ruins, San Ignacio, Belize

Cahal Pech is a smaller, less excavated site located in San Ignacio. It’s easy to reach but is less visited than its neighbors. What I liked about it is that you can see how the inside was arranged. Rooms, hallways and such can be clearly distinguished, in a maze-like structure.

Altun Ha, Maya ruins surrounded by jungle in Belize

Altun Ha is also a must-visit archaeological site in Belize. The ancient city was an important town part of the Tikal confederation. Archaeologists came upon several jade sculptures while excavating the site. Around 300 jade objects were found, the biggest was found inside a tomb, weighing 10 pounds, making it the heaviest Maya jade object discovered so far.

Most structures have been excavated and were well renovated. The view from the highest pyramid is worth the climb. Surrounded by jungle, Altun Ha is a magical place.

You can join a tour from Belize City or San Pedro, hitchhike (you might have to walk the last stretch of the road) or rent a car.

The high temple, maya pyramids, Lamanai, Belize

Located deep inside a lush jungle, Lamanai, an ancient Maya city, stands. Pyramids emerge here and there through the dense vegetation. Lamanai used to be a major trading city and reached 35 000 inhabitants at its pinnacle.

Lamanai is one of the largest Mayan ruins in Belize, thousands of structures have been identified, but only a few have been fully excavated.

Read more about Lamanai here.

Cerros Ruins, Corozal, Belize

Located by the sea between Corozal and Sarteneja, Cerros is definitely an off-the-beaten-path destination. It’s one of the oldest Mayan sites in Belize. It started developing in 50 BC only to decline in 150 AD. Archaeologists believe the small city served as a port for the more important city of El Mirador. There’s probably more structures in the jungle nearby but lack of funding put an end to excavation work in the area.

Santa Rita, Corozal, Belize

Santa Rita is located right in the center of Corozal. This small site was inhabited as early as 2000 BC, and people kept on living there well after the Maya decline and the Spanish invasion. Due to its strategic location, along commercial routes, Santa Rita used to be a prominent city.

Most of the stones were later used to build roads and houses, from the ancient city not much remains. The structures left today are mostly from the Classic Period.

Nim Li Punit

Ball court, Nim Li Punit, Toledo, Belize

Nim Li Punit, in the Toledo district , is way less excavated than other Mayan sites in Belize, giving it a wilder feel. Not many tourists make the trip there, so you might have the site all to yourself, as I did. What’s most impressive about Nim Li Punit are the frescoes found there and exposed in the small museum at the entrance. They’re huge, and you can distinguish really well the carvings.

The city dates back to the Classic period. It used to be an important religious and political center.

Lubaantun, Maya ruins, Belize

Lubaantun, located near Nim Li Punit, is harder to reach on your own, you’ll need to hitchhike, rent a car or book a tour.

The city flourished from 730 to the 890, only to be abandoned soon after. The architecture there is different from typical Mayan ruins in Belize. The structures were built with large stone blocks, no mortar was used, and black slate was preferred to the typical limestone.

Lubaantun means “Place of the fallen stones” in Maya and is believed to have been an important military city.

What to Bring During a Mayan Ruin Tour

When visiting the Maya ruins in Belize, it’s important to be prepared for the elements and to bring the necessary items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Make sure to check what’s included in the tour, usually lunch and water, so you can pack accordingly.

Here are some essential items to bring:

  • Comfortable walking shoes: The ruins often require a fair amount of walking, so it’s important to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.
  • Sun protection: Belize can be hot and sunny, so bring sun protection like sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes and other insects can be a problem at the ruins, so bring insect repellent to keep them at bay.
  • Water and snacks: Bring plenty of water and some snacks to keep you hydrated and energized during your visit. If water is included, bring a reusable water bottle.
  • Camera or smartphone: The Maya ruins are incredibly photogenic, so be sure to bring a camera or smartphone to capture the beauty and history of the sites.
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing : Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended to keep you cool and comfortable in hot and humid weather.

  • A daypack or small backpack: A small backpack or daypack can be useful to carry all your essentials, including water, snacks, and sun protection.

Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period (250-900A.D) and functioned as a vibrant trading center. It was here that the largest carved jade object, a Jade head, was found.

Start this Mayan ruins tour with either a short flight, or cool boat ride to Belize City. Upon arrival, your guide will escort you by van for a 45-minute drive through the Northern Highway, passing several villages as you make your way to the low lush jungle and the Maya Ruins of Altun Ha.  Here, you will receive a guided tour of these magnificent ruins and will hear about Mayan history and ancient Maya civilization.  Your Belize adventure tour guide will provide ample time for you to climb one of the main temples and enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the Belize rainforest.

Lamanai Mayan Ruin

Lamanai (Submerged Crocodile) is one of Belize’s largest Mayan ceremonial centers located in the Orange Walk district on the New River Lagoon. It is characterized by exotic styles of ancient Mayan art and architecture.

This interesting Mayan ruins tour starts with a 10-minute boat ride to San Pedro Town. You will be getting on the 7:00 am Maya Island Air flight, which is only a 15-minute flight to Belize City.  Your guide will take you on a 60-minute van ride through the Northern Highway to Tower Hill. Xunantunich Mayan Ruin & Cave Tubing

Xunantunich (pronounced Su-nan-tu-nich) are famous Mayan ruins located across the river from the village of San Jose Succotz in the Cayo district.

Travel by air or by sea to Belize City. You will be greeted by a private guide who will escort you to the western border through San Ignacio Town. When you arrive at Succotz, a hand-cranked ferry takes you across the Mopan River followed by a mile drive uphill to the famous Mayan archaeological site.

Xunantunich was a major ceremonial center for the ancient Maya and the first Mayan site in Belize to be open for public viewing in 1954.

After exploring Xunantunich, and a break for lunch, you will venture to the Belize Caves. Your excursion begins with a hike through the exotic rainforest to the mouth of the cave. The view is stunning as you float away from the cave entrance on your inner tube with only your headlamp to lead the way. Imagine yourself floating through the caves surrounded by the stalactite and stalagmites above and clear cool waters beneath you.

Explore the center of the Mundo Maya - Belize Mayan Ruins

The Maya civilization flourished from 2000 B.C. to about 900 A.D. During the classic period from 250 to 900 A.D.

In this time period they built impressive Mayan Ruins, created beautiful art from stone and jade, made astonishing discoveries in mathematics and astronomy, and devised the most sophisticated writing system in the Western Hemisphere.

They also established a 1500-mile-long trade route running the length of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and continuing through Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador.

Speculation varies on what led to the eventual decline of this great civilization, but at the height of Maya civilization the population of what is now Belize may have reached one million - four times what it is today.

Although their population is greatly reduced, the Maya continue to live in Belize, still speaking Mayan dialects, and practicing traditional, ancient crafts and healing techniques.

Regarded as the heartland of the Maya civilisation, Belize contains a number of significant Maya archaeological sites, ancient cities, Mayan Ruins and sacred cave complexes.

The lovely ceremonial centre of Xunantunich Mayan Ruins , with its impressive stone pyramid and stunning views of Belize and Guatemala reveals the beauty of Maya architecture, while Carcol, a sprawling city covering some 55 sq mi, gives a first-hand feel for the sheer size of ancient Maya cities.

The majestic temples of Tikal dramatically rising out of dense jungle have enthralled visitors since they were first discovered.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek invites you to explore the center of the Mundo Maya in Belize, and offers tours to several Mayan Ruins in western Belize and Peten, Guatemala at the ancient Mayan city of Tikal.

Here are some options for you to choose from, all equally fascinating and educational.

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins in Belize

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins or Maiden of the Rock is situated on the Western Highway across the river from the village of San Jose Succotz. This major ceremonial center can be reached by ferry daily and it is only 1.5 Kilometer (one mile) from some lovely rapids of the Mopan River.

Cahal Pech Maya Temples

The Cahal Pech Maya site and Visitor Center are located in the Cayo District on a hill overlooking the beautiful town of San Ignacio. Its closeness to town and the vast contrast from town life to rich jungle environment make Cahal Pech a unique place to visit.

Caracol Maya Temples

Located deep within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol is the largest known Maya site in Belize and one of the biggest in the Maya world.

Tikal National Park Tours in Guatemala

Tikal National Park & Mayan Ruins

The Mayan City of Tikal Guatemala is a UNESCO world heritage area and national park, home to many exotic animals, including tapir, jaguar, crocodile, cougars, monkeys, coati mundi and other species as well as a colourful assortment of birds.

Lamanai Maya Ruins Tour form San Pedro Ambergris Caye

Lamanai is the Maya word for “submerged crocodile.” The site’s name – “Lamanay” or “Lamayna” was recorded by Franciscan missionaries in the seventeenth century. It is one of the only sites retaining its original name and is among one of Belize’s largest ceremonial centre. The name Lamanai helps to explain the numerous crocodile motifs at the site. Crocodile effigies appear on figurines, vessel decorations, and on the large headdress on a limestone mask at one of the principal structures at the site.

Lamanai , located on the banks of the New River Lagoon, is easist visited by boar river tour along the spectacular new river. The trip is a nature-lover’s heaven for numerous species of water birds live along this rich and diverse waterway. You may even be lucky enough to view iguanas and crocodiles as they sun themselves on the river banks. There are also interesting flora and fauna to be seen at the Lamanai reserve.

While the site was recorded by missionaries and also mentioned by Thomas Gann in the 1920’s, it was not until 1974 that formal excavations were carried out at the site by Dr. David Pendergast up until 1986. More recent work has been carried out by Dr. Elizabeth Graham.

Previous archaeological work has focused not only on the ancient Maya aspect of the site, but also the colonial era, with investigations into both the Spanish churches as well as the sugar mill.

Lamanai boasts the third tallest Maya structure in Belize, aptly called High Temple, which stands 33 meters tall. Perhaps the most iconic feature of Lamanai is the Mask Temple. The masks featured on this temple is 4.2 m high. It was built up of limestone blocks which were mortared together and then overlaid with a thin layer of lime plaster and a finishing coat of stucco.

This method of construction is unusual in the Maya area, where masks and friezes were usually built up and modelled with plaster on a stone block framework. Some blocks appear to be quite large; for example, the upper section of the face is one large block whereas on the sides of the face, the edges of smaller blocks can be seen. The nose, however, was made up of two pieces of stone either side; the nostrils and middle section were then infilled with mortar and smaller pieces of stone. Each ear flare is also carved from one single block of stone.

Belize Lamanai Tours Customer Reviews

After a fantastic 2 hour boat ride we arrived at Lamanai. I was impressed by the beautiful Pyramid. I went up to the top but it is not for the faint of heart. I had problems coming down. Thank God for the rope that I held on to so hard, my hands were hurting. The jungle trees were full of swinging black Howler monkeys above our heads. My daughter and I had a fantastic day. Would recommend it to anyone that can walk.

Getting to walk all around Lamanai was truly a phenomenal experience. To get that close to the ruins was surreal, and to climb up the high temple was unlike anything I have ever experienced while traveling the world. Our tour guide was top notch, extremely knowledgeable, interactive, funny and kind. He even had a friend who is a true Mayan who came to talk to us . That was beyond our expectations. While walking, we saw so much and even encountered some unique wildlife along the way. You must wear sneakers/comfortable sturdy shoes. There is a lot of walking into the jungle to even reach the ruins, and much more all around. It is a lot of exercise so make sure you are up for that. Please also do NOT forget the bug spray, as heavy duty as possible is absolutely required. You are in the jungle, so you need something very good. I had some incredibly powerful products, plus deet 100 and still managed to get attacked by thousands of fire ants- both feet/ankles/legs. Believe me when I say it was excruciating. I was also wearing capris so I’d suggest long pants despite the heat. It is an experience I will never forget and I had the battle wounds for months before they fully healed. Regardless of that it was an experience unlike anything else, and one I will always be thankful for. When you are standing their among the ruins, it is something else. Not easily explained. I would highly recommend this , even if you do nothing else. This is important and unique. An in dept education that will blow your mind. Don’t forget your camera- you never know what else you might find !

We took a bus from Belize City and then a boat ride along the New River to Lamanai. The boat ride was quite exciting. We saw some local people fishing in the river. Lamanai is pretty well preserved (in my opinion). We climbed up to the top of the high temple. The view was great. Our guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We enjoyed his lectures about Lamanai. It was quit hot when we were there. We didn’t bring enough water with us, so I would suggest to bring enough water to keep you hydrated.

Incredible experience traveling through the city of Belize and country side by bus. Our guide (Adrian) were very knowledgeable of the history, culture and political landscape. The van tour is about 1 hour long and then another 45 minutes traveling by river boat to the Mayan ruins. Touring the ruins was very educational and the natural wildlife in the jungle just cam alive with all of the amazing sounds and plant life. Definitely would recommend this tour to anyone considering it!

Picked us up from hotel, then took jungle boat ride to ruins. Lots of wildlife on boat ride, including iguanas, birds, bats, and monkeys. To see crocodiles, make sure to book when river is lower during dry season. Ruins were amazing! Colin was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable, highly respectful, and passionate about the history and culture of this place. He was able to answer all questions from those on our tour, was friendly, and had a great and appropriate sense of humor (not over the top). Lunch was included and excellent.

Altun Ha Tours From San Pedro

mayan ruins tours from san pedro belize

Altun Ha lies on the north-central coastal plain of Belize, in a dry tropical zone. The site was very swampy during its pre-Columbian occupation, with very few recognizable water sources. Currently, the only recognizable natural water source is a creek beyond the northern limit of the mapped area. The water sources used during occupation were Gordon Pond, which is the main reservoir, and the Camp Aguada, which is located in the site center. The site may have contained two chultuns, but provenience is lost since they are used in modern times.

The site itself consists of a central precinct composed of Groups A and B. Groups A and B and Zones C, D, and E consist of the nucleated area, with Zones G, J, K, M, N making part of the suburban area. The site does not contain any stela, suggesting that stelae were not part of ceremonial procedures. There are two recorded causeways, one in Zone C and one connecting Zone E and Zone F. The Zone C causeway does not connect to any structures, but is probably related to Structure C13, and was perhaps used for ceremonial purposes. The other causeway connected the two zones where water sources were located, and was constructed for topographical reasons, specifically to traverse areas of swampy land; it may have been impassable without raised walkways.

Altun Ha tours can be combined with cave tubing, zipline, Belize zoo, jungle atv, baboon sanctuary, horseback riding, and Belize City tour.

Cahal Pech Mayan Ruins

Cahal Pech is a Maya site located near the town of San Ignacio in the Cayo District of Belize. The site was a palatial, hilltop home for an elite Maya family, and through the most major construction dates to the Classic period, evidence of continuous habitation has been dated to as far back as 1200 BCE during the Early Middle Formative period (Early Middle Preclassic), making Cahal Pech one of the oldest recognizably Maya sites in Western Belize. The Cahal Pech Mayan Ruin rests high above the banks of the Macal River and is strategically located to overlook the confluence of the Macal River and the Mopan River. The site is a collection of 34 structures, with the tallest temple being about 25 meters in height, situated around a central acropolis. The site was abandoned in the 9th century CE for unknown reasons. The earliest pottery in western Belize is found here.

"Emerging information from western Belize suggests that ceramic-using populations may have been in place as early as ca. 1200 B.C. at Cahal Pech and perhaps elsewhere (Awe 1992; Clark and Cheetham 2002; Garber et al. 2004; Healy and Awe 1995). While these complexes, termed "Cunil" at Cahal Pech and "Kanocha" at Blackman Eddy, remain to be broadly documented across the Belize River Valley, they are the earliest established ceramic technologies recorded in western Belize."

The name Cahal Pech, meaning "Place of the Ticks" in the Yucatec Maya language, was given when the area was used as pasture during the first archaeological studies in the 1950s, led by Linton Satterthwaite from the University of Pennsylvania Museum. It is now an archaeological reserve, and houses a small museum with artifacts from various ongoing excavations.

The primary excavation of the site began in 1988. Restoration was completed in 2000 under the leadership of Dr. Jaime Awe, Director of the National Institute of Archaeology (NICH), Belize.

Xunantunich Tours From San Pedro

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins Belize  is an Ancient Maya archaeological site in western Belize, about 70 miles (110 km) west of Belize City, in the Cayo District. Xunantunich is located atop a ridge above the Mopan River, well within sight of the Guatemala border – which is a mere 0.6 miles (1 km) to the west. It served as a Maya civic ceremonial center in the Late and Terminal Classic periods to the Belize Valley region. At this time, when the region was at its peak, nearly 200,000 people lived in Belize.

Xunantunich’s name means "Sculpture of Lady" in the Maya language (Mopan and Yucatec combination name Xunaan(Noble lady) Tuunich (stone for sculpture)), and, like many names given to Maya archaeological sites, is a modern name; the ancient name is currently unknown. The "Stone Woman" refers to the ghost of a woman claimed by several people to inhabit the site, beginning in 1892. She is dressed completely in white, and has fire-red glowing eyes. She generally appears in front of "El Castillo", ascends the stone stairs, and disappears into a stone wall.

The first modern explorations of the site were conducted by Thomas Gann in the mid-1890s. Gann moved from Britain and served as the district surgeon and district commissioner of Cayo, British Honduras, starting in 1892. He chose this area to settle in because he had an interest in Mayan archaeology, and he wished to be able to explore the (at the time) unknown wonders of the indigenous people. Gann’s successor, Sir J. Eric S. Thompson, implemented a more methodical approach, and was able to establish the region’s first ceramic chronology. The main recent archaeological teams to work at Xunantunich and the surrounding region are the Xunantunich Archaeological Project (XAP) and the Xunantunich Settlement Survey (XSS).

In 1959-60, the Cambridge Expedition to British Honduras arrived in the colony and its archaeologist member, Euan MacKie, carried out several months of excavation at Xunantunich. He excavated the upper building on Structure A-11 in Group B and a newly discovered residential structure, A-15, just outside the main complex. Using the European method of detailed recording of the stratigraphy of the superficial deposits (the masonry structures themselves were not extensively cut into) he was able to infer that both buildings had been shattered by a sudden disaster which marked the end of the Classic period occupation. An earthquake was tentatively proposed as the cause; it is inferred purely on the basis of the excavated evidence, and also on the very damaged state of the top building of Structure A-6 ('El Castillo'). He was also able to confirm the later part of the pottery sequence constructed by Thompson. The detailed report by MacKie is "Excavations at Xunantunich and Pomona, Belize, in 1959-60". British Archaeological Reports (Int. series), 251, 1985: Oxford.

Farmers that fed the people living in Xunantunich typically lived in small villages, divided into kin-based residential groups. The farms were spread out widely over the landscape, though the center of Xunantunich itself is rather small in comparison. These villages were economically self-sufficient, which may be the reason why Xunantunich lasted as long as they did; they were not dependent on the city to provide for them. Settlement density was relative to soil quality, proximity to rivers, and localized political histories. Since the farmers were long established on their plots of land, they would not want to be involved with a polity that was under constant upheaval due to invading forces and more. Other nearby Maya archaeological sites include Chaa Creek and Cahal Pech, Buenavista del Cayo, and Naranjo.

Xunantunich Mayan ruins can be combined with cave tubing, zipline, Belize zoo, Jungle atv, and horseback riding to create a full day of fun activities.

Please note that prices of our tours may vary depending on the number of persons booking. This is because we offer strictly private tours.

After lunch, we make a start hiking to the temples of Lamanai and while on the path we’ll be looking out for the Howler monkeys and the colorful Toucans that are predominant in the area.    As we arrive at the Lamanai Mayan ruins you will get to look at the Mask Temple , the High Temple , the Ball Court , the residential area and the Jaguar Temple .  Your guide will give you detailed information on the historic significance of each area, and you will get the opportunity to climb up the High Temple via the original stairway built by the Mayas, and get a spectacular panoramic view of the lagoon and the surrounding jungle.

Where to Stay in Belize for an Unforgettable Exotic Escape

F rom the beaches on Ambergris Caye to the Mayan ruins in San Ignacio, Belize is packed with adventurous and dreamy travel destinations. Located on the Caribbean coast of Central America, this small country borders Guatemala and Mexico . Belize is known for its lush jungles, peaceful islands and vibrant coral reefs. Particularly impressive is the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world, and the Great Blue Hole, a giant underwater sinkhole.

Drink a piña colada on the beach or go hiking in the mountains. Tour Mayan ruins or see lots of underwater wildlife on a snorkeling expedition. Belize appeals to all kinds of travels, from beach bums to outdoor adventure-seekers. Accommodation options range from budget-friendly beach cabanas to romantic bungalows to dreamy island resorts. Plan your Belize getaway now with our list of the best places to stay in Belize.

1. San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

If it’s your first time in Belize, San Pedro is a great place to start. This popular resort town is located on Ambergris Caye, the largest island in Belize. The island is close to the Belize Barrier Reef, making it a great spot for water sports, specifically snorkeling and scuba diving. If the purpose of your trip is snorkeling, be sure to visit the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a protected zone home to over 160 different fish species.

The Ambergris Caye coast is also sprinkled with beautiful beaches, where you can spend the day swimming, sunbathing or watching the sunset. The popular (and not very secret) Secret Beach is a particularly stunning beach on the west coast of the island. To get to Secret Beach from San Pedro, visitors can drive with a golf cart.

Many of Belize’s most popular resorts, including Alaia Belize , Victoria House Resort  and Matachica Resort & Spa  are just a short drive from San Pedro. If you’re in the mood to shop, explore the many beach boutiques and gift shops in San Pedro town. There are also cafes, restaurants, ice cream shops and fruit stands.

2. Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is the perfect spot for a slower, more relaxing beach vacation. This island is particularly popular among backpackers, who are attracted to its affordable prices and laid-back atmosphere. Caye Calker is also easy to get to, as it is only a 45-minute water taxi ride from Belize City.

Visitors can sample fresh seafood, meet the locals or try out a variety of water activities, including snorkeling, diving, scuba diving and kayaking. There is a seahorse reserve, a mangrove forest and lots of boat trips that depart from the island. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is also accessible from Caye Caulker.

You won’t find expensive luxury resorts on this island. Accommodations options include boutique hotels and cozy cabanas, all reasonably priced. If you’re traveling with family, Caye Reef Condos  is a great option. These beachfront apartments can sleep up to six people and are equipped with kitchens. Backpackers can opt for one of the island’s popular hostels, such as Blue Fin Cabanas  and Sophies Guest Rooms .

3. Placencia

Placencia sits on the southern tip of a peninsula in southeastern Belize. This charming fishing village is known for its beautiful sand beaches, which stretch for miles. Adventure-seekers can use Placencia as a home-base while heading off on exciting day trips, while those looking to relax can sunbathe on the beaches or explore the lively downtown area. When you’re not relaxing or exploring the jungle, hike to the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and see jaguars.

The town is home to many luxury beach resorts, many of which have their own dive centers. One popular luxury option is Turtle Inn , a charming beachfront restaurant seated between the Placencia lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. The Turtle Inn boasts an on-site spa, three restaurants, two bars and a pool area.

There are also more affordable hotels for those on a tighter budget. On such option, Miramar Suites , is a popular beachfront hotel located in downtown Placencia. This is a great option for families, as there as an outdoor pool area and many rooms come equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes.

4. San Ignacio

Ready to dive into Mayan history? Travel to San Ignacio. This town is located in the Cayo District, only 20 minutes from the Guatemalan border. Travelers here have easy access to ancient Maya ruins, like Xunantunich and Caracol. The town is surrounded by nature reserves, national parks, waterfalls and caves.

Downtown San Ignacio is full of colorful murals, local markets and locally-owned restaurants. Travelers can stay in jungle lodges or charming boutique hotels. Learn about Iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project or take a Mayan chocolate making tour. To get your adrenaline pumping, take an ATV tour cave tour.

Hotel options in San Ignacio include the  Chaa Creek , a luxury resort dedicated to eco-tourism. Guests can opt to stay in suites, cottages, villas or guest rooms. Some of the upscale villas come with jacuzzis, private verandas and private infinity pools. Maya Mountain Lodge  is a more affordable option just a short walk from the city center.

Hopkins is a small village on the coast of the Stann Creek. The village is home to a community of Garifuna people, a mix of African and Indigenous Americans who live in small towns along the Caribbean. Enjoy delicious Garifuna cuisine, such as bundiga or cassava bread. The Garifuna people are also known for the lively music, which can be heard at local restaurants and bars. For an even more immersive experience, take a drumming or dancing lesson.

Travelers can also visit an overwater bar, go scuba diving, explore a wildlife sanctuary or rent a bike and explore the village. Accommodation options range from modest guest houses to oceanfront luxury hotels. Particularly popular resorts include Belizean Dreams Resort  and Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort .

6. Belize City

Belize City is the largest city in the country, and likely the start of your Belize adventure, as it houses the country’s only international airport. Most travelers fly into Belize City and spend a couple days here before heading off to one of the islands or other vacation destinations.

Although Belize City isn’t known for its beaches, it is home to colonial architecture, historic landmarks and museums. Learn a little history at the Museum of Belize or check out the architecture in St. John’s Cathedral. There’s also a popular zoo and lots of guided nature tours that depart from the city. Some popular accommodation options in Belize City include Villa Boscardi  and Harbour View Boutique Hotel & Yoga Retreat .

7. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is the perfect base for nature-lovers. Here, you’ll find waterfalls, caves, natural waterslides, pools and pine forests. Travelers can spend the day hiking, biking or horseback riding through the forests while enjoying breathtaking scenery and spotting a variety of wildlife.

For affordable accommodation options, stay in a rustic cottage, such as Kane Villas vacation rentals . These rental apartments include a kitchen and a private balcony with views of the mountains. If you’re looking to splurge, consider a luxurious forest lodge, such as the Blancaneaux Lodge , operated by the Family Coppola Hideaways. This resort features an outdoor swimming pool, an organic garden and two on-site restaurants.
