"A melting pot of diversity."

Medan tourism.

The fourth-largest city in Indonesia, Medan is one of the most diverse areas in the country. With sprawling lawns, old government buildings, the heavy traffic and glistening new malls, Medan also offers an interesting contrast between old and new. Each ethnic group contributes to Medan's wide variety of food, making it an excellent place for food tourism, and a must-visit for foodies and connoisseurs alike. Lake Toba, in Medan, is the world's largest volcanic lake and is another popular attraction in Medan.

Usually, Medan is overlooked by tourists as a mere transition point to Malaysia or other Indonesian cities, the island of Penang or the beautiful Lake Toba, but the city in itself has plenty to offer in terms of culture, food and sights. Medan is a cultural mix of many ethnicities and religions, so its landscape is dotted with Dutch buildings, mosques, Hindu and Buddhist temples, churches and many other places of worship. With people from almost all kinds of Asian ethnicities, including Chinese, Javanese, different Indonesian tribes, Southern Indians, and Northern Indians, Medan has a vibrant culture, making it a must-visit for tourists wishing to explore Indonesia.

Book your Medan holiday

Holidays to medan.

On the north side of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, the city of Medan is waiting to surprise you with outdoor excursions, fun markets and thousands of years of history.

Check out ancient shrines and age-old museum artifacts or take a hike through wild rainforest, then return to the present day at lively karaoke bars or laid-back lounges. With mountains to the west, beaches to the east and plenty of entertainment wherever you look, Medan packages are sure to fit your holiday bill.

Things to Do in Medan

Vihara Gunung Timur, south of downtown, is the largest Chinese Taoist temple in town (and perhaps on the whole island, although no one has actually checked). Even the huge, dragon-adorned incense burner in the entryway is impressive. Like a challenge? Complete the 17 stations inside and you just might receive health and prosperity on your Medan holiday. Outside, the courtyard has great views of the Babura River (can you find the Buddha statue?).

The Tjong A Fie Mansion is a temple of a different kind: it’s dedicated to wealth! Tjong was a merchant and the richest person in Medan in the 1920s—and he didn’t hold back when it came to his digs. There are 35 rooms, painted ceilings and beautiful Victorian, Chinese and Malay influences. Imagine yourself sitting down to tea in with antique, hand-painted tea sets, then waltzing in the upstairs ballroom.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Ramai Market, east of the city centre, is the town’s biggest all-day market. This is your one-stop souvenir shop: ginger ting ting jahe candies for the office, gorgeous batik fabric for the in-laws and a hand-carved congklak set for your shelf at home (it’s one of the oldest games in the world!). Prefer your shopping air-conditioned? Just 1 km west is Centre Point Mall, one of the city’s newest and best places to find brand-name chains and deals.

If you’re not too full of fresh jackfruit, Medan holidays have plenty more food to offer. This Southeast Asian melting pot has all types of cuisine. Kampung Keling (Madras Village) is the city’s Little India, where you’ll find delectable curry, naan and more. Merdeka Walk, near the city centre, is the place to be for street eats. And for supper (in Indonesia, that means late-night snacks), head to Jalan Semarang to fuel up with classic nasi goreng fried rice—or more adventurous foods like frog and snake.

If you need to work up to those late-night munchies, no problem. Holidays in Phuket may have the party reputation, but Sumatra’s biggest city is no slacker. Medan holiday packages near the Merdeka Walk will put you near nightclubs, billiards bars, karaoke and classy wine bars where you can sip the night away. If you’re craving live music, Medan hotels near Jalan Putri Hijau are where it’s at.

Explore Batak culture and the beautiful natural scenery around Samosir Island. Ambarita is an ancient Batak tribal village, well known for its ancient courtyard of stone chairs and table in front of the king’s house. The courtyard is said to be the place where village matters were discussed and wrongdoers tried. There is also a separate courtyard where the accused were tortured and beheaded. If time permits and if you are interested, you can also visit the well-tended royal residence of the Simalungan Batuk chiefs. The site consists of a large main building that functioned as tunique andhe king’s quarters and a harem. Look out for the buffalo skulls that symbolize the power of the chief and the gecko motifs (boraspati) that symbolize wealth and wisdom. There is an option to visit the local market or just to sit back, swim and relax by the lake. In the late afternoon, transfer to Taman Simalem Resort at Tongging (~ 3 hrs drive).

TESTIMONIALS

See latest reviews on our Google page ! From the point of my first enquiry to planning the trip, and confirming all arrangements,HS was prompt, friendly and helpful. The personalised service and attention to detail was great. We were travelling in a group of 3, and he made sure that our request for room configuration were met. We got to see and do everything and more on the itinerary. The guide and driver were very flexible and easy-going. Even if there was quite a lot of travelling time on the road, it was comfortable and enjoyable. Thank you for a wonderful experience! – YY (Group of 3 on an 5D4N Mt Sibayak, Taman Simalem, Lake Toba, Medan Trip in Sep 2018) Well informed guide, and was able to make changes to accommodate our needs Activities and timing for the tour were well planned Accommodation was up to standard (: – Abigail (Group of 6 on a 5D4N Medan, Lake Toba & Mt Sibayak in Jun 2018 We love our hippie guide Smiley who stands out with his dreadlocks and knows a lot about the local culture. We like how he shows us different smells of the leaves, and their uses, as we walked past them. He also knows how to avoid the terrible traffic on the way to the airport. We love the activities that the organise for us. He will always check with us what we wish to do, and is on time for us. The accomodation was fabulous too, especially the one he arranged for Samosir Island. We totally soaked in the picturesque view of Lake Toba. Smiley also drove past the ghost town and I’d say that’s the highlight of our trip. We highly recommend him. – Shiling (Group of 2 on a 4D3N Lake Toba & Mt Sibayak in Jun 2018 The whole trip was simply awesome. The moment we met our guide Mr Bayu we welcome by him at the promised meeting point and immediately usher us. We were impressed that our guide is very able to speak fluent English and also we were able to connect to our guide easily as our age gap were quite near. The guide was very knowledgeable about the whole trip and able to inform us accurately on what we can expect when climbing the mountain. The whole drive to and fro different places was very well navigated by the driver. The driver Mr Bondan knew his way around places and able to get us safely to our destination despite heavy traffic conditions along the way. – Zahin (Group of 2 on an 4D3N Ijen, Bromo & Surabaya trip in Mar 2018) We decided for iwannatravel after contacting a few agencies. Ying had been very responsive, patient and flexible in providing our customized itinerary. It would have taken us much effort and headache if were to plan this ourselves. Activities were well planned and spaced out unlike the hectic and fast paced group tours which we undertook in the past. The tour guide ( was very knowledgeable of the sites visited and importantly he was very humorous and kept us entertained and informed throughout the trip. Highly efficient from start to end. Dayat, the guide, was very helpful and professional. the guides were also very good cooks and very efficient at their job. We feel that for Asians, a 4D3N climb is much more recommended over a 3D2N climb. – Darek (Group of 5 on a 6D5N Mt Rinjani Trip in Aug 2017) – Ms. Chen (Group of 4 on a 4D3N trip to Lake Toba – Berastagi – Medan in Jun 2016) Bob was recommended to me through my cousin. He was always on the ball before, during and even after the trip; soliciting feedback from us to improve on her offering. She was also very understanding to our cost concerns; revising the itinerary a few times so as to meet our budget. Our guide was very professional; he was always doing his best to accommodate our needs and flexible with our request. Our driver was very careful with his driving and extremely thoughtful about the air-con temperature and toilet break. We strongly recommend you to book your adventure through iwannatravel. Thank you iwannatravel. 加油! – Esther (Group of 3 on a 4D3N trip to Lake Toba – Berastagi – Medan in Sep 2015) Guide could communicate well and was very personable. Itinerary was flexible. Enjoyed being in a non tourist area to visit the long house village. Guide even went marketing for us! E.g chose fruit for us. – Meida (Group of 2 on a 3D2N trip to Lake Toba – Berastagi in Oct 2014) Read more at testimonials !

Lake Toba is one of the awesome natural wonders of the world. This enormous crater lake has an island almost the size of Singapore in its centre.

At over 1,145 square km, and a depth of 450 meters, Lake Toba is actually more like an ocean. This is the largest lake in Southeast Asia and one of the deepest lakes in the world.

Lake Toba is a place to come and sit back, relax and absorb some beautiful pristine scenery.

As you sit and take in the view of the picturesque mountains set against the cool clear lake, you will feel the worries of the world melt away.

As the lake sits 900 meters above sea level there is a cooler climate here making a refreshing break from the heat, humidity and pollution of the city.

Getting Around

Feel the wind in your hair and do as the locals do by hiring a motorbike to explore this beautiful part of the world.

If you’re on Samosir Island, take the day to explore by taking a drive on the road running around the edge of the island.

Although rough and unpaved in places, this road offers some spectacular views of the lake from the highest points on the island.

If you’re staying in the popular village of Tuk Tuk on Samosir.

the best way to get around is to walk, or wander, down the main street at a leisurely pace.

Getting There

Lake Toba is 176 km from Medan and can be reached in under 6 hours by public bus which has two routes: Medan-Parapat or via Medan-Berastagi.

Travel agents in Medan can also organize a rental car plus a chaffeur for you. Medan is an international gateway.

A number of airlines fly daily between the Kualanamu Airport Medan and all major cities in Indonesia and international flights also go from Medan to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Once you arrive in Parapat, you can catch the ferry to Samosir Island. The ferry goes every hour and a half.

The two landing points on Samosir are the traditional village of Tomok, or Tuk Tuk, where the islands hotels and restaurants are concentrated.

If you are coming overland from the south via Bukittinggi and Tarutung there is a public bus available.

Travel Responsibly

As travellers, it should always be a top priority to travel responsibly.

We already leave a substantial carbon footprint just by flying to our travel destinations, so that’s even more reason to make a positive impact when we get there.

There are many small steps you can take to becoming a responsible traveller, and we highly encourage you to educate yourself before travelling to Sumatra.

Here are some things you can do to minimise your footprint:

Do not leave any rubbish on the ground: You would think this would go without saying; however, there are some questionable humans who think it’s ok to throw trash on the ground.

Respect the local culture: Be courteous of the local culture and act in such a way that leaves a good impression.

Learn a little of the local language (hello and thank you is the minimum), greet the locals in a polite manner, and respect dress codes & traditions.

Best Time To Travel Lake Toba

To enjoy the beauty of Lake Toba at its fullest.

we recommend you to travel here during their dry season which occurs between May to September.

During this period, you can explore clearer blue skies and sunny weather.

Unless you want to spend your holiday stuck in the hotel due to the unceasing rain or use an umbrella as your photo accessory, avoid the rainy season from November to late March.

Public holidays such as Eid holidays or Chinese New Year are not ideal for travelling here too because everything from the crowd to the prices will go up.
