Who qualifies for our Veteran and Military cruise discounts on cruises to Alaska?

Our cruise discounts apply to:

Do the cruise lines offer Alaska Cruise Discounts for Military and Veterans?

Sometimes.  The cruise lines all have different rules on who qualifies for their military rate.

In general, the cruise lines will only allow the military discount to be applied to the cabin which contains the member of the military or to just the military member themselves.

Spouses/dependents do not qualify for Alaska cruise discounts for military and Veterans from the cruise lines unless their military partner is in the cabin, deceased, or deployed.

However – all spouses, dependents, family, and friends DO QUALIFY for the military discount from Military Cruise Deals!

What is there to do in each Alaskan Cruise Port?  We’ll tell ya!

Most Alaska cruises go here!   There’s so much to do that is easy to get to. This is the capital of Alaska, sitting at the base of Mt. Roberts, and it is where cruisers can see Mendenhall Glacier. The cruise ships will be parked right at the base of Mt. Roberts, so it is walking distance to the Tram that will take you to the top- where you’ll have this great view and can have lunch!

You’ll definitely want to do that!  It’s just $33 per adult and $16 per kid.

You’ll also want to take the Glacier Express Blue bus (only $10 per person) to to the Mendenhall Glacier visitors center, from where you can take a short hike on a flat path to the glacier.

Your cruise ship will pull up right next to this adorable little town, so you can just walk off the boat, no tendering necessary.

This is a great place to go shopping, hiking, or see a fun Lumberjack show that’s only one block from your cruise ship.

This is the perfect town to just walk around. Make sure you go to Dolly’s house – this little building used to where ladies of the night practiced the world’s oldest profession. It is still known as Alaska’s best little house of ill repute and remains standing just as it was when Dolly lived and worked there.

This is another tiny little town with a ton to do. Hiking, wildlife viewing, great dining, fishing – it’s all here. Get up close to eagles, owls and many more large Alaskan birds at the Raptor Center.

For a donation of any size, visit the Fortress of the Bear and get 10 feet from this playful bear! The bears love to just roll around, right in front of you.

Most travelers arrive here by cruise ship and follow part of the original Gold Rush route by tourist train!  It is a totally walkable and historic town that has been largely restored to its roots, complete with false-fronted buildings and wooden sidewalks.

The best way to see Skagway is through a historical sightseeing tour.  We also recommend a visit to the Davidson Glacier, Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, or the Lower Reid Falls.

Pictured above are photos taken from a tour of the Davidson Glacier. My parents did this and said it was AH-mazing … but my mom didn’t charge her camera and has the worst flip phone camera ever so she has zero compelling photos to share. It is expensive but they recommended splurging on this and said you really don’t go to Alaska on a budget.

This charming port is bustling with lush gardens and greenery.  It is lauded as one of the most walkable cities in Canada!

You can just about walk from your cruise terminal to the main downtown area.  You basically follow everyone else there and back, you can’t get lost.  And it’s extremely safe. Walking trails lead right from the city center to Dallas Road, what locals call the scenic drive, along the Pacific Ocean and around the southern coast of the city.

Vancouver Island is renowned as a world-class scuba-diving destination, where you can get in the water with seals and sea lions on a regular basis. But, for people who prefer to keep their feet dry, there are all kinds of boat excursions, from kayaking and glass-bottom-boat tours, to get you up close and personal with the amazing marine life.

This is something for everyone in Victoria!

1.  One of the most exciting things to do in  Alaska  is the White Pass Summit Excursion – on ‘the Scenic Railway of the World’.

The 40-mile round trip from Skagway will be one of the most scenic and breathtaking you’ll ever have in your life – I don’t care who you are.

You’ll wonder how in the heck they built this, especially since it was back in 1898! They were motivated to try and get to the gold up in ‘them thar hills’.

“Give me enough dynamite and I’ll build you a railroad to hell,” said the builder of this railroad.

Reservations are required for this!

2.  Mt. Roberts Tram in Juneau. 

This is a view of Juneau from the top of Mt. Roberts. You get up here via that tram on cables.

Or, if you’re a serious bad-ss like myself, you can spend 2-3 hours hiking to the top.

As a reward for those who do that – the tram ride DOWN is FREE!

There’s a perfectly delicious restaurant a-top, so plan on lunching up there while you enjoy the view.

3. Halibut Fishing

You can do this in almost any port.  It’s expensive, but you will catch fish, lots of it.   And then they will pack it up and ship it home to you, so you’ll have a freezer full of halibut for months. 

4.  Bus Tour through Denali What’s a cruise tour?

It’s a cruise PLUS a few days spent traveling over land and staying in hotels like the one at Denali National Park. 

A lot of people prefer a cruise tour, as it usually includes a train ride.

And once you spend all that effort getting to  Alaska , you might as well stay long enough to see most things, like Denali National Park.

Denali is 6 million acres!

So they’ll put you on a bus and drive you around it, and you’ll often have to wait for bears to cross the road

5.  Helicopter Tour

A helicopter ride and landing on a glacier! I did this. It was my one big expensive shore excursion and it was thrilling.

The helicopters that do these tours are glass-bottomed, so it feels like the ground is falling out from under you when you ascend. Freaky! Your stomach will drop. The view will be unlike anything you’ve seen before.

6.  ZIPLINE!

This is the world’s largest ZipRider at Icy Strait Point, with six 5,330′ ziplines dropping 1330′. SaveSaveSaveSave

7.  Hiking

You can do this in every port.   I love hiking, and the hiking in Alaska was THE BEST I’ve experienced in my 47 years. 

8.  Wilderness Express Dome Train

The Wilderness Express operates on the Alaska Railroad’s  Denali Star  route that offers daily summer service to Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali National Park and Fairbanks. 

9.  Wildlife Watching

Just driving around, you’ll see a bald eagle everywhere you look.   Swing a dead cat, and you’ll hit 2 of them.   I just said that to see if any of you are actually reading these captions.

10.  Getting up close to the glaciers

All Alaska cruise ships will do this – you don’t need to ask for it or pay extra.   There will be one day of your 7-day cruise in which you glide slowly up the fjord, with steep cliffs on each side. And eventually, you’ll get right up close to a glacier and the ship will do a 360 turn on its axis, to give all passengers a panoramic view.  It’s a quintessential Alaskan cruise moment – and you should be atop your ship somewhere so you can take it all in. 

Most cruise lines only allow you to book a maximum of four people in a cabin. If you have more people traveling, you will most likely need multiple cabins. In 2024, Margaritaville at Sea updated its popular Heroes Sail Free program, renaming it Heroes Sail Free and First.

The new program offers all active and veteran military, first responders, law enforcement officers, medical personnel and educators in the U.S. a free sailing with a paying guest as often as they like throughout the year. The offer applies to sailings aboard Margaritaville at Sea Islander, the line's newest ship, as well as Margaritaville at Sea Paradise.

With the addition of the Heroes Sail First component, qualified passengers also receive an Express Pass, which includes priority embarkation and disembarkation at both home and destination ports, two complimentary welcome beverages, priority luggage delivery and expedited booking assistance for shore excursions for all sailing destinations.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line 's Military Appreciation Program provides exclusive benefits to U.S. military members, veterans, the National Guard, reserves and their spouses. Members of the program receive a 10% discount on all cruise fares. It's also combinable with the Free at Sea program, which includes free drinks, airfare for a second guest, Wi-Fi and other perks.

NCL also runs its Giving Joy contest each May during Teacher Appreciation Week. Winning educators within the U.S. receive a seven-night cruise for two.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises extends up to $250 in free onboard spending credit to U.S. and Canadian veterans and active, retired and disabled military personnel. You can apply the credit toward specialty dining, onboard shopping, shore excursions and spa treatments.

Throughout the year, the line also has special promotions for first responders, medical professionals and teachers (no specials were available at the time of publication). Those who qualify can verify their status through Princess' website and sign up to receive notifications of promotions.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean offers military rates to active and retired personnel, veterans and their spouses in the U.S. and Canada. The line also extends discounts to police officers (local, state or federal) and firefighters. The discount applies to friends and family members staying in the same cabin as the eligible service member or first responder.

The special rates vary from sailing to sailing, and the best way to access the discount is by booking through a travel agent or directly with Royal Caribbean over the phone.

Bottom line

Many of these discounts are minor but are still nice if you want to shave a few dollars off the cost of a cruise vacation. Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea has announced a new Heroes Sail Free complimentary cruise to the Bahamas. This is for members of the military, both active and veteran, first responders, law enforcement officers, and educators. This is a partnership with Govx.com . Margaritaville at Sea features gourmet food and beverages, pools, retail stores, and more.

You must be a verified member through the GOVX ID or ShopVCS platform. Up to two qualified members per stateroom. This offer does not include taxes, fees, and gratuities. One sailing per member, per year. You would receive a free 3-day, 2-night cruise to the Grand Bahama Island. The offer is good for bookings from January 5- December 29, 2023, with some blackout dates.

Carnival Cruise

Carnival Cruises offers cruises to Alaska, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, New England, the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, the Panama Canal, Transatlantic, and Transpacific. They do offer military fares for any stateroom type, departure port, or destination. This discount is for active and retired US military as well as Canadian National Defense members.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers all military members, active and retired, a certain amount off per person. You would receive:

• $25 off an inside or ocean view
• $100 off veranda, concierge class, aqua class, and suite class

Please make sure to read the following stipulations.

• This discount only applies to the 1st and 2nd guests in the same stateroom.
• The discount applies to select 4-night and longer sailings that depart before December 14, 2022-May 5, 2025 excluding Galapagos.
• At least one of the guests will need to be a member of the US or Canadian military. They will need to show their military ID at the pier.

Disney Cruises

Disney offers a special military rate on certain cruises. They are 3-5 day Bahamian cruises, as well as select Alaskan, Norwegian Fjords, Northern Europe, and British Isle cruises.

They offer a discount on one stateroom per military member. The discount is for all retired, and active US military, their spouses, including the national guard and reserves. You would need to show your ID at the time of check-in.  The military member will have to be there at check-in. Availability to this offer is limited on each sailing.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises goes to the Caribbean and the Antilles, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and India, South America, South Africa, Canada and New England, Asia, and Worldwide. They offer up to 10% savings on their cruises. The discount is available to active and retired US and Canadian military personnel, plus family members including spouses, parents, in-laws, and dependant children. The discount can be applied to multiple staterooms, and they offer zero penalties if you have to cancel because of a deployment. They offer 5% off of interior and ocean staterooms, 10% off of a balcony, suite, and MSC Yacht Club staterooms. Kids also sail free on certain sailings.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Their military discount is offering up to $250 of free onboard spending money, which is a form of onboard credit. This offer is for veterans as well as those who are active, retired, or disabled military personnel.

You can use this on any cruise, at any time of the year and it can be used to purchase a variety of amenities and experiences on the cruise. The credit can be used for:

• Dining in specialty restaurants
• Items in their onboard boutiques
• Shore excursions
• Other expenses as well

Cruise length also determines the level of discount.

If your cruise is:

• 6 days or less – $50 in credit
• Between 7-13 days – $100 in credit
• Over 14 days – $250 in credit

You can not use the credit at the casino. In addition, you must apply for this benefit no later than 14 days before your cruise departure date. You would need to download the application and submit the form. The onboard spending money will then be applied to your account.

Royal Caribbean offers cruises to Alaska, the Arabian Gulf, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest, the Panama Canal, the South Pacific, Transatlantic, and Transpacific. They offer a military rate, which is open to active duty military in the US and Canada, as well as retired military, veterans with an honorable discharge that have served a minimum of two years or 6-months in a war zone. Spouses can also book one stateroom as long as the eligible spouse is occupying the stateroom. Spouses of deceased military are also eligible.

Margaritaville at Sea , a cruise line sailing out of the Port of Palm Beach, Florida, to Grand Bahama Island, offers a "Heroes Sail Free" program. Active-duty service members and veterans who are verified members through the GovX ID or ShopVCS platform can get free fare on an inside stateroom on a three-day, two-night cruise. This offer is valid for new bookings on sailings through December 31, 2024, and blackout dates may apply based on availability.

2. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has 24 ships that depart from every coast in the United States, sailing to fun destinations like the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Europe and more. They offer reduced rates to active-duty and retired service members with proof of service.

3. Norwegian Cruise Line

Through Norwegian Cruise Line , you can sail to the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska or Hawaii, among other destinations. Active-duty military, Reserve and National Guard members, veterans and their spouses receive an exclusive 10% discount after online verification.

4. Disney Cruise Line

Similar to Disney World and Disneyland , Disney Cruise Line offers military discounts. All active-duty and retired military personnel, National Guard and Reservists and their spouses qualify for special rates on select Disney cruises. This offer is valid only for new bookings and is limited to one stateroom per service member, per sailing.

5. Celebrity Cruises

Active-duty service members and veterans can get special savings when booking with Celebrity Cruises , which sails to more than 300 destinations in 79 countries. Prices vary based on the type of stateroom, and a valid military ID is required at the pier.

6. Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises offer a wide variety of destinations, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Panama Canal, South America and Antarctica, and many more. Active-duty military and veterans can get up to $250 free onboard spending money (after online verification) that's eligible on any cruise, any time of the year. This money can be used for things like spa treatments, restaurant dining, gifts and shore excursions.

7. Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean , a cruise line that offers itineraries to more than 270 destinations in more than 60 countries, gives special pricing to active-duty service members and their spouses, the National Guard and reserves, retirees and veterans with an honorable discharge who served a minimum of two years or six months in an active war zone. Be prepared to present a valid military ID when checking in for the cruise.

8. MSC Cruises

Through MSC Cruises , you can visit destinations like the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Northern Europe, South America, southern Africa, Asia and more. They offer up to a 10% discount to active and retired military personnel, plus family members, including spouses, parents, in-laws and dependent children. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 24, 2023) – Elevating the art of relaxation and serenity, Princess Cruises is introducing the exclusive, next-level Sanctuary Collection aboard Sun Princess and Star Princess, as these newest ships prepare to debut with this select, all-inclusive oasis in October 2024.

As the name suggests, guests reserving in the Sanctuary Collection enjoy exclusive access to the ship’s top deck retreat area, along with a host of additional and high-end amenities designed to enhance their voyage. These indulgences include exclusive private dining and relaxation areas, a luxurious stateroom experience, as well as the Princess Premier bundle to round out the all-inclusive allure of the Sanctuary experience. Princess Premier offerings include: 

• Premier Beverage Package (covering drinks up to $20, champagne by the glass, specialty coffees, smoothies and bottled water, as well as 25 percent off bottles of wine)
• Unlimited MedallionNet 2.0 with Fleetwide Starlink and 5G for up to 4 devices

In the adults-only (16 and up) area, guests enjoy plush lounge furniture, private cabanas, pool and jacuzzi, attentive service, soothing music, refreshing beverages, and light fare. The Club also features exclusive programming, including sunrise yoga classes and sail-away receptions. 

Other Sanctuary Collection amenities include priority specialty restaurant reservations, and premium stateroom amenities. 

The new Sanctuary Collection aboard Sun Princess includes three levels of stateroom types – Signature Collection Suites (80), Mini Suites (123), and Premium Deluxe Balconies (12).

Sanctuary Collection staterooms go on sale today and are available starting with the Oct. 14, 2024 voyage on Sun Princess, and the Oct. 4, 2025 voyage on Star Princess. Guests who have booked as of April 23, 2024 and have already reserved Sanctuary Collection staterooms on either ship will receive the additional amenities outlined at no additional cost, excluding the Premier bundle.

The 177,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess offers an array of exciting new culinary and entertainment offerings, as well as luxurious staterooms and suites across a broad spectrum of categories.
