Pixies and Modest Mouse Reunite for 2024 Tour with Special Guest Cat Power
This year, three of the biggest names in indie rock will come together as the Pixies and Modest Mouse announce a month-long North American tour with Cat Power. Following a successful 20-show series at the end of last summer, the new tour begins on May 31 and continues through the end of June for a total of 23 new dates. This run from the titans of alternative will bring their music to some areas missed by the original tour, notably including seven shows in the South and seven new venues in the Midwest.
The 2024 run will start in Charleston, S.C., with a performance at Firefly Distillery on May 3 commencing the trio’s first Southeast series. In the region, the tour will pass through PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, N.C on June 1, Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, Tenn., on June 2 and Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park in Atlanta–Cat Power’s hometown–on June 4. Next, the bands trek north to Cincinnati to play The Andrew J Brady Music Center on June 5, followed by gigs at Toronto, Ontario’s Budweiser Stage and Laval, Quebec’s Place Bell on June 8 and 9. The tour returns to the states on June 11 with a show at Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford, N.H., preceding engagements at Philadelphia’s TD Pavilion at the Mann on June 12 and the iconic Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., on June 14.
The tour hits the Big Apple on June 5 by way of Queens, N.Y.’s Forest Hills Stadium. Next, the groups progress to Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass. on June 16 before a Midwest run of Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights, Mich., Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago, Surly Brewing Company in Minneapolis, Breese Stevens Field in Madison, Wis., Vibrant Music Hall in Waukee, Iowa and Starlight Theatre in Kansas City on June 18-24. The trio of acts will then jump down to Texas for appearances at Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Austin, Texas and The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas, on June 26-27, followed by Walmart AMP in Rogers, Ark. on June 28. Finally, a performance at Fiddler’s Green in Denver on June 30 will bring the tour to a close.
All of the featured acts join this tour with new momentum as veterans in the indie scene. This year, Modest Mouse will celebrate the 20th anniversary of fan-favorite album Good News for People Who Love Bad News , as well as three decades of live performance. Cat Power is currently riding renown for her 2022 full-length album covering Bob Dylan’s 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert, the third covers album in the artist’s discography. Meanwhile, the Pixies continue to reorient following the addition of bassist Paz Lenchantin, who officially replaced Kim Deal in 2016; Doggerel , the third studio album from the band’s current iteration, leans towards rough punk-inspired sounds.
Presale tickets for the 2024 tour will be available for Citi cardmembers on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. local time. General onsale begins Friday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. local time at ticketmaster .

Modest Mouse Announces North American Winter Tour Dates for Anniversary of ‘The Lonesome Crowded West’
by Jacob Uitti September 8, 2022, 8:00 am
Modest Mouse has announced a series of “intimate” North American tour dates in winter 2022 for their The Lonesome Crowded West Tour.
Videos by American Songwriter
The string of dates is set to celebrate 25 years since the release of the band’s album of the same name, which dropped in 1997.
Tickets for the new tour go on sale Friday (September 9). Visit HERE for more information.
To commemorate the anniversary, Modest Mouse will be releasing vinyl records via Glacial Pace Recordings. A limited amount will be available for pre-order as an add-on with each ticket purchased and will also be available for sale at each show.
The record, produced by Calvin Johnson in Seattle, will serve as the impetus for Modest Mouse’s plans to tour, going out as a four-piece with original members Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green, Russell Higbee, and Simon O’Connor.
The Lonesome Crowded West was Modest Mouse’s followup to their acclaimed 1996 debut, This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About . Featuring songs like “Cowboy Dan,” “Doin’ The Cockroach” and “Trucker’s Atlas,” nearly every track has been part of Modest Mouse’s ever-rotating setlists, but this will be the first time fans can hear them in order from start to finish.

Modest Mouse is an experimental indie rock band that was formed in Washington state, USA by Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green and Eric Judy in 1993. The band has had a revolving cast of collaborators which include Granddady's Jim Fairchild and Smiths legend Johnny Marr.
The band takes their name from a Virginia Woolf quote. Truth be told this is quite a fitting lineage as, like Woolf herself, fewer artists give quite as convincing a portrayal of someone on the verge of a mental or nervous breakdown as Modest Mouse.
Isaac Brock’s is the man responsible for that. His voice could convincingly stand up with the likes of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Morrissey and David Bowie as one of the acquired tastes that you’ll eventually wonder how you ever did without it.
However, it’s when his guttural howl delivers his lyrics that things get truly worrying. The evocative images of everything from the endless dust bowl deserts of the American West, to the sheer expanse of space and the cold, unfeeling ocean posit how we as individual people can possibly mean anything compared to the vast canvas of existence itself. Don’t worry, there’s also some damn catchy choruses in their as well!
Catchy enough to have arguably lead the charge of indie rock into the mainstream after The Strokes and The White Stripes kicked the doors down. They have sold 1.5 million copies of April 2004’s “Good News for People Who Love Bad News”, the album which gave the world their deathless Billboard Hot 100 hit “Float On”. The follow up album 2007’s “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank”, which featured the aforementioned Johnny Marr as a member of the band for the album’s creation and subsequent tour, was certified Gold as well.
On the surface, it would seem that they are an odd band to have Gold and Platinum albums to their name, but look closer and they always temper their experimental and haunting tendencies with solid gold hooks. If R.E.M are no more, they can be satisfied in the knowledge that there are still alternative rock bands bringing literate, profound and edgy rock and roll to arenas and concert halls the world over.
Live reviews
Much to my surprise, the band that appeared at Red Rocks last night was almost unrecognizable from the band I’ve explained above. Taking the stage in broad daylight, to a half empty amphitheater, the two original members (Brock and Green) were joined by six other musicians to deliver a powerful, loud-as-fuck rendition of “Dramamine”. Unfortunately, it would be the only selection from the 90’s, but it was enough to cause a flood of concert-goers to storm the gates and fill the remaining seats. It’s a shame so many people weren’t aware of the early start time (or Modest Mouse’s controversial position in the line-up), but Brock and his new seven-piece band were rocking a full house by the time “Be Brave” segued into “Ocean Breathes Salty”.
Shedding his denim jacket and long-sleeved button-down in favor of the t-shirt below, Isaac Brock’s intensity could be read in his clinched eyelids and quirky facial tics, as Jeremiah Green and Davey Brozowski teamed up on dual drum kits to shake the place with thunderous percussion during “What People Are Made Of”. After a good run of mostly cerebral selections, “Lampshades on Fire” was a welcome jovial moment that convinced me I needed to spend more time with an album I’d all but ignored.
Red Rocks can be a fickle bitch when it comes to weather, so nothing compares to the experience of being there, under a perfectly clear sky, on a warm summer evening. A quick glance up from our position just behind the sound stage revealed thousands of men and women dancing all the way to the horizon. Performing before the sun has a chance to set is never ideal, but if it’s unavoidable, there is no better place to do it than Red Rocks. The view from the stage is spectacular. And that spectacle could be seen in the eyes of the merry band of musicians as they swapped out conventional and unconventional instruments throughout the show.
There was so much going on that sometimes is was hard to keep track of who was playing what. Traditional rock ‘n’ roll tools were augmented with strings and keys and upright bass and sheet metal, not to mention the plethora of guitars Brock cycled through. As the night began to darken around us, a lit joint hung from Jim Fairchild’s mouth during the slightly sinister “Shit in Your Cut”; and then the Melodica came out for “Bukowski”, before a guy and girl (who I don’t think were actually in the band) introduced a pair horns during the full-on jamboree that was “This Devil’s Workplace”. Lisa Molinaro might have been the most impressive multi-instrumentalist up there though. As the night progressed, she demonstrated expertise on the viola, keyboard, and even the banjo (on “Dashboard”), while also lending her voice to backup vocals when needed.

What can't be said about a band that never fails to entertain? With a gentle yet tough sound, Modest Mouse once again brings their specific brand of music to the spotlight. And once again, it was superb to listen to.
Modest Mouse's unique brand of experimental rock is always intriguing. It's a certain style incorporating a clever blend of odd occasional instruments you won't see too often in typical rock bands. But that's the thing, Modest Mouse is far from being your average rock band. You'll hear them play violins, trumpets, hell even a banjo at times. But of course, this simply adds to the uniqueness of their sound.
Ultimately, Modest Mouse is no stranger to awesome songs to rock to, and spectacular ballads to sway to. Things can get as intense as the energizing "Satin in a Coffin", upbeat and fun as "Dashboard", or even calm and provocative as "The World at Large".
Even with their spectacular set list of amazing songs, the band truly sends it home with their frontman Isaac Brock. A genuine person, Brock finds ways to make the band's music feel as real as it can possibly be.
Though it's been 5 years since Modest Mouse has released any new material, seeing them live is more than enough to find out their past albums (with conveniently long titles) still hold strong and true to entertain. But fear not! For a band this good is always working hard to produce new things, and with Modest Mouse, one will learn waiting is common, but oh so worth it. Modest Mouse, how I love you.
Modest Mouse have been touring and performing as a band for over twenty years and their own brand of indie rock continues to delight fans as they appear as popular now as ever. Despite not receiving commercial success from their first few full lengths, when tracks picked from the early days get aired the crowd react incredibly positively.
Their 2007 LP 'We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank' reached #1 in the States so of course a large amount of this material gains best reaction from the audience. Huge singalong moments appear during 'Dashboard' and 'Fire It Up' and although these are quite polished pieces of indie on the record they are incredibly raw when performed live.
The indie rock sound becomes almost garage-like as the instrumental aspect of the live gigs feels more like a jam session than a polished performance. This is endearing though as no matter how big of a venue, the whole show feels incredibly personal and a fantastic showcase of the band's large discography.
I remember hearing about Modest Mouse back in the early 2000s, so I was surprised to see them come to my town and play a sold-out show at a local concert hall. Their live sound is a lot more raw and intense than their singles, such as Float On, which I came to love them for. Instead, they have many songs where they sound more like a garage band than a polished indie force - but that's a good thing! I was impressed by the experimentation the guitarists tried in almost every song.
Even though some of it was very noisy, the majority of the songs were all based on a powerful beat and melody so nothing was really lost. I was actually really appreciative of their live skills, especially how they changed up parts of The Good Times Are Killing Me for a live performance.
The crowd was very respectful during their less-intense songs, especially when the entire band was performing together to make a really awesome folk sound.
Modest Mouse was the supporting act for "Brand New" at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. That was surprising but worked out when we were able to leave after the 2nd Brand New "song" of shouting and headbanging. Punk? Not what I recalled from the Ramones, Clash and The Jam.
Anyway, MM was limited to about 45 min. and played with energy and enjoyment - http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/modest-mouse/2016/greek-theatre-berkeley-ca-6bff5e42.html
The voice audio was muffled and supressed in volume, awful, rendering comments from the band incomprehensible and the poignant vocal counterpoints lost. I'll look for a better context next time...
Modest Mouse is an incredible band. They are proof that amazing musicians still exist! But this was a Tuesday night show and we expected them to headline. We received a last-minute notice that was unclear and half-suggested that MM might go on first. We missed the first 45 minutes of their performance. And as well as the band played, they didn't seem to want to be there. Maybe that's because the sound was awful - something was wrong with Isaac's mic the whole time. Something was off. I can't wait to see them again but next time, I hope it will be at a different location. Oh, and we didn't even wait for Brand New to play.
I saw Modest Mouse in Santa Barbara on 5/19/18 and I was very disappointed with their performance and felt ripped off. My largest complaint is they didn't play Float On. I mean, you better have a lot of hits to skip your one-hit-wonder. I like some of their other songs but Float On is by far their best. My second complaint is the band sounds terrible live, they sounded out of sync, out of tune, and were just blasting us with ear-cringing noise. I have since seen Brandi Carlile and Norah Jones at the same venue and the acoustics were great, so Mosest Mouse just isn't talented enough to see live. Save your money
We were told by the venue "The Greek Theater" that "there will not be an opening band" and that "Modest Mouse" will start at 7:00 promptly. Well, actually Modest Mouse was the opener for a crappy band called "Brand New". Modest Mouse only played a short set and the last thing the lead singer said was "my throats dry" and they quit, never to return not even for an encore. Sound was off terribly. I spent a lot of money and drove a long ways to be disappointed in this terrible concert, and believe me, I've seen a lot of them. And the venue lied, why even send me an email with that kind of info? Get it together.
Modest Mouse put on a good show. As far as stage presence goes, most of the band were just kind of standing in their spot focusing on the instruments. Only the lead singer really put on a "performance" and he was pretty over the top sometimes.
The band could have sounded a lot better if they had just turned the volume down maybe 10-20 decibels. It's not the band's fault, the venue is smaller in size and I've been to other shows there, so I know it has a history of lousy sound quality, but it was seriously loud for such a small building.
Definitely go see them!
Went to both Detroit shows and they couldn't have been more different. First show we stood one riser up main floor. The band was great. They didn't play as long as we had hoped. Only one short encore. Thursday show we were right at the stage in front of Isaac. Totally different crowd and the band fed off that amazing energy. They knocked it out outta the park! Fantastic night and two encores and just a fantastic show. So glad we went to both. Isaac's sweet sense of humour and cheeky rhetoric made me love him even more.

About Pixies
Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having served as a major influence for artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more. And today, a whole new generation of music fans has been discovering and embracing the band’s “loudquietloud” signature sound. Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies’ calling card; seven genre-defining studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa, and the iconic Platinum Doolittle, considered one of the all-time, quintessential alt/rock albums. Sell-out crowds all over the globe, Pixies’ live shows are unadulterated magic, simultaneously electrifying and lo-fi. Seventy-five minutes of the band playing anything they want, in whatever order they want, the classics and the new gems. And no two Pixies shows are ever the same.
About Modest Mouse
Having recently completed a sold out 25th anniversary tour for their breakthrough album, 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West and played a summer ’23 run with Pixies and Cat Power, Modest Mouse continues to prove themselves to be one of the most consistent live acts today. Modest Mouse released their highly anticipated new album, The Golden Casket, on June 25, 2021 via Epic Records. The Golden Casket heralds another new chapter in the GRAMMY® Award-nominated multi platinum band’s unpredictable evolution. Produced with Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee in Los Angeles and in Modest Mouse’s studio in Portland, the album hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science, frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.
About Cat Power
With a catalogue of songwriting that’s unparalleled in the worlds of indie rock and American music at large—spanning several decades and ten studio albums—Marshall’s work as Cat Power has defied genre and convention, her legacy rippling through the work of a wide range of contemporary musical luminaries ranging from Lana Del Rey, Clairo, and Soccer Mommy to Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Angel Olsen. There’s a rawness and immediacy to Marshall’s music that has stood the test of time, with every new musical missive from her as essential as what’s come before it.

Modest Mouse Drop New Song ‘Leave a Light On,’ Plot U.S. Tour
By Jon Blistein
Jon Blistein
Modest Mouse have released a new song, “Leave a Light On,” from their upcoming album, The Golden Casket , out June 25th via Epic Records.
“Leave a Light On” finds frontman Isaac Brock grappling with the growing disconnect between people and the existential threat that poses to our humanity, per a release. The song feels woozy and borderline psychedelic at the edges, but it’s anchored by a big indie rock sing-along hook: “We’re leaving, we’re leaving, we’re leaving/We’ll be home soon.”
“Leave a Light On” marks the second offering from The Golden Casket , following, “We Are Between,” which arrived earlier in May. The Golden Casket is Modest Mouse’s first album in six years, following 2015’s Strangers to Ourselves . The new LP was produced by Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee and recorded in Los Angeles and at Modest Mouse’s Portland, Oregon, studio.

“This is where my kids play sometimes after school”: Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock built a studio that is like Willy Wonka’s very own guitar gear emporium – and it even has a walk-in pedal closet
Ice Cream Party Studios is a converted warehouse with living spaces, fishing lure chandeliers and is a trove of weird custom gear. Join Isaac Brock as he gives Reverb a guided tour
Isaac Brock has opened the doors to Modest Mouse’s Ice Cream Party Studios to offer a guided tour of the US indie rock institution’s converted warehouse turned gear emporium and recording facility.
Home studios come in all shapes and sizes. Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot knocked out three rooms in his home to build his, squeezing in a Neve 8424 console. Thrash legend Kerry King recently revealed that his home setup is just his guitar amp and smartphone. Many of us will have some sort of home studio setup, at least just to sketch out ideas.
But Modest Mouse frontman/guitarist Isaac Brock has constructed a next-level setup, taking an old check-printing warehouse and turning it into a fully integrated living space, recording setup that is decorated with chandeliers constructed of fishing lures, filled with custom guitars and Modest Mouse ephemera, and even has a walk-in pedal closet with dozens upon dozens of guitar effects pedals .
There are strong Willy Wonka vibes here. It’s called Ice Cream Party Studios (after the 2019 single) but it’s really Brock’s chocolate factory, and he opened its doors to internet gear retail giant Reverb to offer a video tour of the premises.
There are plenty of talking points even before we get to Brock’s custom-built Wicks guitars. What’s with all the crystals?
“I really like old medical cabinets so I ended up buying too many of those, and I put crystal in ‘em and now I don’t know what to do with them except have them in the entryway,” he says, admitting that he didn’t really have any intentions of making a studio like this but as is his wont he got carried away.
“I was just going to get old books and shit and make walls of them, towers of them, and that would be our isolation, and we were going to guerilla-style get a record done. Cheap as possible. But then I get fuckin’ fixated on shit and I did, so I built a whole studio downstairs.”

Upstairs? That’s where the band can stay when they’re on the job. There’s even a place for the kids to hang out. “I’m building a life! So that’s what we did,” says Brock. “And now this is where my kids play sometimes after school.”
But really this is a playroom for musicians, with toys all over the place. The pedal closet is something else. Brock is an EarthQuaker Devices super fan, so he is well stocked on Jamie Stillman ’s designs.
There are some familiar enclosures. Some more obscure picks, too, such as the Interstellar Watermelon 2 by Blue Dinosaur Electronics, a modulating wah/vocal filter inspired by a Ludwig Phase II synth . “I don’t remember why I like it but I believe it has something to do with the fact it sounds like its name,” says Brock.
He also owns an Akai E2 Headrush delay/ looper pedal , some mini pedals from pedalboard cult favourites Banana Effects, and a whole range of pedals from Retro Mechanical Labs which are “hands-down some of the finest pedals fucking out there.” Brock's approach to pedal acquisition? Oftentimes, it is rooting around in the bargain bin. That's where the gold is.
But long-time Modest Mouse fans will be most interested in getting a closer look at Brocks’ custom-built Wicks guitars, which feature a unique homespun take on the Floyd Rose double-locking vibrato, which dispenses with the whammy bar in favour of a bridge design that you can get hands on with. Here he explains why these became his go-to electric guitars , with Gibson SGs used for open tunings.
“What happened was when I started playing guitar initially, the guitars I played on were always just the shittiest $200 heavy metal guitar because they had Floyd Roses,” says Wicks. “They had those weird floating bridges and stuff. And Brian Wicks was in Seattle, at The Trading Musician. He was the repair guy there, and so I would bring my guitars in for repair and we slowly developed and came up with our own version of a Floyd Rose.
“I don’t like holding onto a piece of metal while I am trying to play guitar, and this way I can lean into it. It just has a lot more feel, and you can just lean, pull up with your pinkie. That’s why it has this specific arc to it, so you can get under it. You’re not holding a piece of metal… Each progressing Wicks got better sounding.”
Will we see one of these custom builds showing up on Reverb.com? Like everyone else these days, Modest Mouse has an official Reverb store selling off gear on the site – most listings have sold but you could still pick up an old (and rare) Magnatone Estey M20 for just over two grand.
A few functionality issues aside that could be a nice fixer upper. But no, you won’t see a Wicks. Not anytime soon.“Yeah, I’ll probably never sell these things,” says Brock.
Check out the video above.

Johnny Marr announces 2024 tour with James. Get tickets today
Manchester will be united in the States this year.
Johnny Marr and James — both natives of the aforementioned England city — are embarking on a 20-concert North American co-headlining tour this fall.
Along the way, the pair will stop in for one night at Brooklyn’s newly opened Paramount Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
This won’t be their first time touring together either; James opened for Marr’s band The Smiths on the group’s 1985 ‘Meat Is Murder Tour.’
“We admired them and even did one of their songs in our set,” Marr said recalling the tour in a press release. “I’ve been a fan of theirs ever since and being out on tour again after 40 years is a really great thing.”
We look forward to making magic together,” James’ lead singer Tim Booth added.
And if you can’t wait to see these ’80s icons reunited, tickets for all Marr and James shows can be scooped up as early as today.
Fans can now purchase tickets on sites like Vivid Seats ; the official on-sale is Friday, May 10.
Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.
They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.
A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Last year, Marr dropped a Best Of compilation featuring all the hits from his storied career.
What we’re most interested in though is his 2022 release “Fever Dreams Pts 1-4.”
Comprised of 16 pulsing tracks, Marr shows off his gifts for straddling the line between hard rock and jangle pop.
While the record is “no skip” level good, we can’t help but recommend three standout tracks that showcase Marr’s musicianship- the soaring “Lightning People,” the rocking yet danceable “Sensory Street” and nimble, poppy “Night And Day.”
Don’t sleep on the opening track “Spirit Power and Soul” either; it’d fit right in at a haunted house/crossfit hybrid if that makes sense.
Want to hear for yourself?
You can find “Fever Dreams Pts 1-4” in its entirety here .
Just this year, James released their 18th studio album “Yummy.”
Unsurprisingly, the veteran rockers haven’t lost a step.
Album opener “Is This Love” is a feel good singalong that sets the tone for an inventive, dreamy, atmospheric record that sounds like a bizarro world version of The Killers.
Piano heavy “Shadow Of A Giant” is a surprise diversion from the band’s straightforward indie pop sound as they land on something that sounds brand new and familiar all at once; “Mobile God” evokes otherworldly bombasity.
Make sure to stick around for the album closer “Folks,” too. It’s the perfect melancholy capper to the unpredictable yet always satisfying “Yummy.”
