Yoga, meal with the Bidens, meet with CEOs: PM Modi’s packed days during US visit

PM Narendra Modi will make his first official state visit to the US from 21 June to 24 June. In New York, he will lead the International Yoga Day event at the UN Secretariat. He will then head to Washington where he will hold bilaterals with Joe Biden, address US Congress and meet the diaspora

Yoga, meal with the Bidens, meet with CEOs: PM Modi’s packed days during US visit

It’s a big year of geopolitics for India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming trip to the United States is one of the most important diplomatic visits of 2023. The PM will travel to the US from 21 June to 24 June on what is his first official state visit to the country.

As President Joe Biden himself said “everyone in the whole country” wants to meet the Indian premier. It should come as no surprise then that Modi has a packed schedule as he visits Washington and New York.

We take a look at what the PM will do in the US and whom will he meet.

Yoga Day in New York: 21 June

The PM will reach New York on 20 June and is expected to be welcomed by a group of Indian Americans at the Andrews Air Force Base.

On 21 June, Modi will lead an International Yoga Day function at the United Nations Secretariat. Can there be a better ambassador for the traditional Indian practice, now adopted by millions across the world than Modi?

The leader is a known yoga practitioner and has been leading the Yoga Day celebrations in India since 2015. Months after Modi first came to power, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga.

Don’t miss: Firstpost Podcast: How Narendra Modi Popularised Yoga globally

United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, Shombi Sharp, said in an interview with ANI , “International Yoga Day which came into force, I believe in 2015 was supported by 175 countries very very quickly. Everybody I think in the world got on the board and understood, what an important and joyful day that is when we look at the international calendar.”

He said that Modi has been “pushing for international recognition of yoga and supported the International Day” and hence the PM leading the yoga session at the UN Secretariat will be a “big deal”.

Modi will be joined by several top Indian Americans at the UN complex in New York.

Bilateral and state dinner in Washington: 22 June

The PM will then fly to Washington and on the morning of 22 June he will get an official welcome at the South Lawn of the White House with a 21-gun salute. More than 7,000 Indian Americans will gather to witness this.

Modi and Biden will hold a bilateral meeting, which is expected to focus on defence and technology partnership between the two countries and climate change. Delegation talks and press statements by two leaders will follow.

In the afternoon, Modi will address a joint session of the US Congress for the second time, only the first Indian leader to do so. He will share his vision of India’s future and speak on the global challenges facing the two countries, according to top Congressional leaders.

Modi first addressed the US Congress during his visit in June 2016.

The day will round off will a state dinner, hosted for the PM by President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. The event will be attended by prominent Americans and Indian Americans.

“A state dinner, always the social high point of a state visit, is planned meticulously, often months in advance. The menu typically features food and wines that reflect the culinary traditions of the guests of honour but with an American twist. It represents the friendship between the nations of the hosts and the honoured guests,” says the Bureau of Global Public Affairs (BGPA) in the US Department of State.

Lunch at the US state department, meet with CEOs: 23 June

On 23 June, PM Modi will attend a lunch hosted by the US state department. He will be joined by US vice president Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

The PM will also give a speech at an event organised by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, an independent non-profit in Washington DC. Top American CEOs and prominent leaders will be in attendance. Modi could also hold a meeting with a select group of CEOs.

The Indian leader is expected to address the Indian diaspora at an event organised at the Ronald Reagan Centre in Washington. Those attending will be Indian-origin doctors, hoteliers, lawyers and businessmen, according to a report in ANI .

Modi is expected to make various other speeches during his visit that will highlight India’s success story, economic growth, digital payment infrastructure and the country’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the diaspora event, the PM is expected to fly out.

As a representative of the world’s largest democracy and an emissary of its goodwill to the world’s oldest democracy, I am honoured and delighted to be speaking once again before you. For democratic republics such as India and the United States, chambers and buildings such as this one — the Houses of Congress on Capitol Hill here in Washington, DC, and Parliament House in New  Delhi — are embodiments of popular sovereignty, repositories of the people’s trust and monuments blessed with the sacredness of a church, a temple, or indeed a mosque. Dear Readers,

While  addressing the US Congress , Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that when he first visited the US as the PM, India was the world’ 10th largest economy and eight years later it is the fifth-largest economy of the world. Further, he said that soon India will be the world’s third-largest economy in the world.

This categorisation of economies is based on aggregate GDP levels stated in current US dollar terms. In other words, one calculates the market value of all goods and services that are produced in every country in a year and then expresses it in terms of US dollars.

CHART 1 shows the top 10 economies by size and their GDP level in trillions of dollars. There is a vast gap between the US and China, which occupy the first two slots, and the rest of the field. Udit Misra explains.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to United States as "unprecedented," saying that several diplomatic and strategic decisions taken during the visit shall help build a "new India" with economic progress, news agency PTI reported.

BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani, addressing a press conference at party's headquarters, said that the visit has led to "significant outcomes" in defence sector, mong others. "Fifteen standing ovations and over a hundred applause to the prime minister's speech at the US Congress, this was not only the hallmark of the prime minister's visit to the US but what is unprecedented is the Indo-US partnership in many critical areas which will help serve a better future the Indian populace," she added.

"Several diplomatic and strategic decisions were taken during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US which will help build a new India with the resolve of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and provide opportunities of economic progress to Indians," she said.

Irani said that NASA and ISRO will develop a "strategic framework" for human space flight cooperation by the end of 2023, and a joint Indo-US quantum coordination mechanism will help facilitate collaboration between the industry, academic and government, according to the report.

"Those who want to deflect attention from the prime minister's personal efforts undertaken in strategic cooperation in defence, artificial intelligence, ecosystem of semiconductor assembly line and critical mineral engagements would like to raise the minority bogey," she charged. As the general elections come closer such "political gas-lighting" is expected, she claimed. "What I am grateful to is the prime minister's steadfast focus on issues that are critical to Indian economy," she added, the report said. (PTI)

The decision of the United States and India to end six major trade disputes at World Trade Organization (WTO) is a "big victory" and will be mutually beneficial for both countries, India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said, news agency PTI reported.

The resumption of talks at the Trade Policy Forum has started yielding significant results, Goyal said. New Delhi will also remove retaliatory customs duties on certain American products such as almonds, walnuts, and apples, according to the report.

A joint statement issued after the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden in Washington said the two leaders welcomed the resolution of six outstanding WTO disputes through mutually agreed solutions. "It is a big victory for India and is a mutually beneficial arrangement for both countries," Goyal told the reporters. He said, now there are no pending India-US disputes at WTO.

"So, India and the US by the end of this year will have no disputes. All the six major ones have gone," the minister said adding "for the first time bilaterally we are ending the disputes." In 2015, India lost a long-pending dispute over poultry imports from the US at WTO's dispute settlement body. India had 12 months to comply with the WTO order. The US had sought trade sanctions against India in this case.

The six disputes include countervailing measures on certain hot-rolled carbon steel flat products from India, certain measures relating to solar cells and modules, measures relating to the renewable energy sector, export-related measures, certain measures on steel and aluminium products, and additional duties on some products from the US. India-US relationship is not only important for both the nations but also for the world. Today holds a special importance in history of India-US relations today, we discussed several regional and global issues during our meeting: PM Modi

PM Modi US visit, PM Modi in US

The India-US relationship is reaching a new high point. But the significance of  Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip  to the US will be obscured by short-term political framings. There will be the sheer political theatre of the US courting India and the Prime Minister leveraging this moment to shore up his domestic political legitimacy. There will be the disappointment of those who think the Biden Administration is actually going out of its way to give its imprimatur on the state of India’s democracy. But “democracy” was not going to be an issue in this phase of India-US relations.

PRATAP BHANU MEHTA WRITES | Making of a high point

PM Modi will address a joint session of the US Congress on June 22 , becoming the first Indian prime minister to be accorded this honour twice. Before him, only a handful of Indian PMs have given speeches to US Congressmen and Congresswomen. Here is a look at all those addresses and the context in which they were delivered.

Who are the Indian PMs who have addressed US Congress in the past? Read here

State visits are the highest-ranked category of foreign visits to the US, where the head of a state visits the US on the formal invitation of the US President. Before Modi, the only two state visits under President Joe Biden have been by France’s President Emmanuel Macron and South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol. Invitation for a state visit signifies that the US considers the guest nation an important friend and ally.

Modi's Second Visit to Ram Mandir in 103 Days Exposes Opposition’s Double-talk on Visiting Ayodhya

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second visit to the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya in 103 days, after the historic ‘pran pratishtha’, has exposed the double-talk by the Congress and Samajwadi Party on the point of paying obeisance at the temple.

Neither the Gandhis nor the Yadavs in Uttar Pradesh have visited the temple so far. While there was speculation that the Gandhi siblings could visit the temple before the filing of nominations from Amethi and Raebareli, it did not happen. Akhilesh Yadav has turned down not one but two invitations to visit the temple – first for the January 22 inauguration and, the second, by the Uttar Pradesh speaker who led an all-party delegation on February 11.

The Congress had termed the January 22 ceremony as an “event of the BJP and RSS” and said no one needed an invitation to go to a temple. Yadav, while declining it, had said he will surely visit at a later date along with his whole family. More than 100 days have passed, but neither the Gandhis nor the Yadavs have visited the temple. Modi registered this fact as he visited the temple on Sunday and also held a 2-km road show in Ayodhya late into the night.

Timing of PM’s Ayodhya visit

As the Uttar Pradesh election enters the crucial Awadh area in the fourth and fifth phases, the Ayodhya sentiment is expected to peak. That may explain why the prime minister was in Ayodhya for the road show ahead of polling on May 20.

Amethi, Raebareli and Sultanpur are adjoining Lok Sabha seats to Ayodhya and Prime Minister Modi has already escalated his attacks on the Gandhis and the Yadavs for not visiting the temple so far, putting the opposition in a quandary over this issue.

Recently, at a public rally, he took a swipe at the Congress for skipping the temple inauguration saying: “The Congress thinks it is bigger than the Lord.” He had also said INDIA bloc allies Congress and SP had insulted Ram and did not care about India’s heritage. Further, in a recent interview, he referred to the opposition saying: “You should be proud that the people who have built the Ram Mandir, those who have also struggled for it, forget all your sins. They come to your house and invite you. And they want to start anew. (But) you also reject them.”

Cong leaders quit over decision to decline temple inauguration

A number of Congress leaders have quit the party citing how they were hurt by the party turning down the January 22 invitation. The latest was Congress spokesperson Radhika Khera, who resigned from her primary membership on Sunday, saying she was under relentless attack inside the party as she had visited the temple in Ayodhya and said she was a devotee of Ram.

Acharya Pramod Krishnan also attended the January 22 ceremony and was expelled by the Congress soon after. Other party leaders who have quit the party over this matter include spokesperson Gourav Vallabh, former union minister Suresh Pachouri and three-time MLA CJ Chavda.

This begs the question why the Congress and SP have chosen not to visit the Ram temple after January 22 – the BJP is now openly questioning this, asking if this is due to vote bank politics. Both the opposition parties find themselves in a fix over this in UP.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: PM Modi arrives in Bhubaneswar to address two public rallies in Brahmapur, Nowrangpur on May 6

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bhubaneswar (PTI)

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bhubaneswar on Sunday night. He will kick off his campaign trail for the upcoming elections today and is scheduled to lead public rallies in Brahmapur and Nowrangpur on Monday. In anticipation of his visit, the Odisha Police have significantly beefed up security, as per ANI.

Upon his arrival at Biju Patnaik International Airport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed by top BJP leaders including Manmohan Samal, the party's Odisha unit president, and Aparajita Sarangi, the Bhubaneswar MP. Modi also held a roadshow from the road from the airport to Raj Bhavan. According to sources, he is scheduled to visit the Shree Lingaraj Temple in the city on Monday morning.

BJP National President JP Nadda is also in Odisha. On Sunday, Nadda unveiled the BJP's manifesto for the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections, making bold commitments to tackle corruption.

"Our goal is 'from resolution to accomplishment'...we will fulfill our commitments...it (Manifesto) is not a document, it is our implementation programme for the next 5 years. The day we make government, a sub-committee is made for the manifesto and every month we monitor our manifesto...Our goal will be to end the corruption of BJD, we will have zero tolerance towards corruption," he declared, according to an ANI report.

Nadda criticized the past practices during the Congress era, where the manifesto was treated merely as a formality, lacking public trust and sincerity from its creators. "Under the leadership of Modi ji, the culture of politics, the definition and methods of politics have changed in the last 10 years… today, under the leadership of Modi ji, there is politics of reform, politics of performance and politics of transformation, hence today's politics has become the politics of report card."

He also highlighted the neglect of PM Modi's welfare initiatives by previous administrations and the detrimental politics practiced in non-BJP governed states, including caste, creed, regionalism, corruption, and nepotism. "The states not governed by BJP are suffering due to the politics of caste, creed, regionalism, corruption, and nepotism... These have been the guiding principles for other political parties. However, the BJP is driven by the idea of 'politics of development'," Nadda emphasized.

The Assembly elections are slated to be held in four phases from May 13 to June 1, coinciding with the Lok Sabha elections. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. In the previous 2019 Assembly elections, the BJD secured a significant majority with 112 seats out of 146, while the BJP and Congress won 23 and 9 seats, respectively. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls also the BJD had an upper hand in Odisha.

My gut feeling is that they (BJP) are not going to cross very much beyond 200 (seats). Forget 400, forget 300, how much more than 200 remains in the phases yet to come. We are looking at an election in which the BJP will fall to a level where they won't be able to find enough allies. Given all of this, I think we have to be very clear that there is absolutely no realistic prospect for the BJP to come back with anything like the numbers they are suggesting, not even close: Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP

A part of the Chambal region is in Shivpuri district and falls under Guna Lok Sabha seat. Gwalior, Morena and Bhind (SC) Lok Sabha seats are dominated by Other Backward Classes with a sizable population of SCs. Ex-Pak minister's 'praise' of Rahul matter of 'grave concern'; Congress owes explanation, says Rajnath

Former Pakistani minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain's "praise" of Rahul Gandhi is a matter of "grave concern" and the Congress must explain the "deep love" for its leader from a country that always attempted to destabilise India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said. "There must be a reason behind this deep love (agadh prem) from a country that has been trying to destabilise India. It is a matter of grave concern and India wants to know what is the reason behind this love," he said. Chaudhry -- infamous for boasting about Pakistan's hand in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack -- had on May 1 posted on 'X' excerpts from a speech by Gandhi with the caption "Rahul on fire" that drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders.
