Boat trips to Shipwreck beach

Plan your trip.

Cruise to one of the most famous beaches in the world and get dropped off at the magnificent Navagio Beach in Zakynthos. See the legendary shipwreck up close, and get the option to stay longer at the beach if you choose.

Visiting Navagio by boat is a must on Zakynthos but it cannot be compared to the view revealed from edge of the cliffs above. Seeing the beach from the sea and from the cliff top is like seeing two different places and the best is if you can do both.

By speedboat A picture perfect setting awaits you at Navagio Beach, an exposed cove on the coast of Zakynthos. Visitors come from all corners of the world to grab photos of the famous ship wreck, called Panagiotis. The gorgeous blue water is just stunning in contrast to the white cliffs and sand.

The platform is easily reachable by car, your own or rented. Bus trips are also organized but like the full-day boat trips there is one negative – you will spend very little time there because it will be part of a program intended to show you as many places as possible in a day.

Although it’s usually difficult to see turtles during this time of the year, our guide kept waiting at the port so that we were able to see the turtles 4 times! Two turtles even swam under our boat so that we could see them because of the glass bottom. He stopped at a nice place to jump into the water and we had about 45 min at the beach. Everyone enjoyed it and it was fun! Read more Written October 19, 2023
  • wilson_bigwill 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Still fighting to get my refund. Don't book last minute! I only wanted a refund simply because i did a last minute booking (90 mins prior) and Viator did not relay the information in time. I am now fighting to get a refund since this company refused to issue the refund. **We arrived around 15 minutes early, and I provided the captain with my name, but he couldn't find my details due to the last minute booking. He then directed us to another location, stating that our boat wasn't here yet but would arrive soon. However, the boat that came was from a different company and could accommodate 90 people, more than what the booking information listed, and that captain confirmed us it wasn't his boat after I showed him our tickets. Then a friend contacted the company (in question) we booked with, and they sent back the same person who initially directed us away, now with a full boat. The captain docked, apologized for the confusion, and requested us to wait for 10 more minutes as another boat was on its way. About 20 minutes later, nearly 50 minutes past our scheduled 1pm departure, a 16-year-old showed up, saying he was preparing another boat to take us out. Unfortunately, this boat was smaller than the stated capacity of 23 people and didn't have a glass bottom as advertised. At this point, I needed to use the restroom and asked the young man for its location. He sarcastically replied that there was none on the boat as you can see and suggested I go in the water. Unaware of my IBS condition, I left to find a restroom, which took about 10 minutes due to its location. Upon returning, I found my friends not on the boat and they explained that the young boy wouldn't wait for me and they were also uneasy about a minor operating the boat. We ended up booking with a different company, where they informed us that one must be at least 20 years old to drive the tour boats. The young boy had told my friends he was just 16. When I raised this issue with the operator over WhatsApp, he blocked me. Prior to blocking me, he offered a tour the following day, but our flight back to Athens was already scheduled for 6pm. Fast forward to the tour with the new company, we saw the boat with the young boy, who seemed to have picked up an adult at one of the stops. After a conversation with the adult, he assured me that I would receive a refund. That assurance was the only reason I didn't pursue the matter further while in Greece. I have five other people that can back up the facts I laid out.** see screenshots of my conversation with the operator. Read more Written October 18, 2023
  • Maurice B 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor animal What an aweful experience. Don’t let yourself be misguided by the claim this is WWF approved. Circling with 7 boats around a small piece of the sea to see the turtle grasp for air. When the turtle surfaced, it was surrounded by all boats running their engines heavily to not bump into eachother. These sounds disorientate the turtle, I learned later. This is a 100% commercial, 100% not animal friendly tour. It’s appalling this is allowed. Read more Written October 17, 2023
  • XBigJu 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Choose a different boat tour. This was dreadful. I can only say how disappointing this trip was and not as advertised. The first part of the trip was circling around the small port of Lagunos for half an hour with lots of other boats in a vain attempt to catch a sight of a turtle. If any where indeed around the port, then the number of boats would have scared them away. Needless to say we didn't see a single turtle, which was the whole point of this trip! We then proceeded to venture along the coast to a few caves and eventually stopped for a swim. A spot away from any other boats which had anchored for their guests to swim and snorkel. It suddenly became apparent why no other boats had stopped in our location. After 1 other guest entered the sea I quickly followed. We both then discovered a large amount of stinging jellyfish which left us, along with other guests, stung in several places. A very painful experience.  After which the captain decided not to stop again, then after a short journey further along the coast to see another cave, we returned across the bay and anchored up on a small beach with a large amount of other tour boats and very little space to sunbathe. Incredibly out of the '3hr' boat trip, over a hour of it was spent here! We then returned back to the departure location, after once again circling in vain to catch sight of turtles. With all this in mind, I would claim that this booking was no where near as advertised, caused injury to myself, partner and mostly a waste of time. Read more Written October 15, 2023

  • stephaniey820 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles The trip was very distressing. There was one turtle surrounded by up to 8 boats, and not just speedboats but larger carriers. The poor turle stayed under the water until it had to come up for air. The noise of the engines and the polution from the fule. It really wasn't the trip I was expecting and I felt ashamed that I took part. Then on the nesting island it was packed with boats and people. The nesting sites where cornered off with a small piece os string, but again it just felt so wrong and the turtles should be more protected. I would advise anyone NOT to go on these trips. It wasn't just this provider but all the boats trips where the same. Read more Written September 19, 2023

  • LynnMartha 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Scam or bad luck? I really don't know what to think of the experience. Honestly. All of Laganas beach felt like a horrible neon touristic place. About the turtles; this company canceled the boat trip because of too much wind, they didn't even want to leave but couldn't say why. It was my last day on the island so I went to another company. They did leave with a boat with a 3 in 1 formula (turtle Island, Keri caves and turtle spotting). It was a very stressful experience (because of the wind). They hurried to the caves and just left us with a bunch of other tourists on the turtle island. No one knew when there would be a boat to come and get us again. We had to ask captains ourselves to get on a boat again. The "captain" clearly didn't care, took the boat maybe 10-15 minutes at the turtles watching spot, no turtles were there. Then without any explanation took us back to land. End of trip. Again it was NOT with this company but I felt all the boats did the same thing. It felt like a major touristic place and no company really cared about tourists. They just make you pay for a hasty and bad experience. Maybe this company does better? But honestly. They could have said "we can go with the boat (like the other companies) but because of the waves it will be impossible to see turtles so honestly a waste of your money." But no.. Your just a tourist so you don't get any more explanation then "canceled, too much wind" while other boats still go on the water. Very very confusing. Go to the shipwreck with porto maries cruise and fun! Hire a quad! That was truly beautiful. Maybe this was an extra bad experience because of the weather but only the lack of explaining anything.. They just don't care. It's a shame. Huge difference with trips I took on par example Santorini. Read more Written September 11, 2023

Greece: How to get to know Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos

Greece: How to get to know Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos

Last updated: 10/11/2019

Check out all the tips to visit Navagio Beach, famous Greek beach that is considered one of the most beautiful in the world! Access requires programming on your part, as it is isolated. The tour is amazing and well worth it.

A NAVAGIO BEACH (SHIPWRECK)

Navagio Beach is a hidden beach on the island of Zakynthos, in the Smugglers Cove area. In 1980, the ship Panagiotis, which was being pursued by the Greek Navy, ended up running aground on the spot. Rumor has it that the ship was transporting contraband, including cigarettes. The captain of the ship denied this, stating that it ended up sinking because it faced adverse situations due to a storm, which greatly impaired its visibility.

Greece: How to get to know Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos

The ship was abandoned and to this day it can be found on the beach, well rusted and resting on the white gravel of Navagio, in front of its amazing turquoise waters. The beach is also known as Shipwreck (wrecked ship) precisely because of this event.

Greece: How to get to know Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos

Navagio is one of the most beautiful and photographed beaches in the world and there are two ways to get to know it: from a viewpoint, on top of a cliff, where it is possible to have an area view of the beach and, properly, stepping on your sands . However, it takes a little work to get to the place, since the beach is only accessible by boat .

NAVAGIO BEACH VIEWPOINT

The most famous photo of Navagio Beach is an aerial view of the beach. This area is accessible by a road on the west side of the island of Zakynthos that leads to the site. From Zakynthos Town, the main town on the island, it takes about 1 hour to get there. Follow the Shipwreck Beach signs and you can't go wrong. there is an free parking where you must stop to continue on foot. Continues heading right until you reach an area with a small metal structure . There is the safest area to see the beach, but not the best view. It's really hard to capture a photo surrounded by dozens of visitors eager to take a selfie.

Greece: How to get to know Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos

To take good pictures of the beach, you need to follow the cliff edge . My recommendation is that you wear sneakers to protect your feet and be safer to walk , because you will have to walk to take good pictures. I saw a lot of people in flip-flops and I don't recommend them. I honestly thought very dangerous take this route. There is no guardrail on site. There is not even a defined path to follow. You need to find gaps in the middle of a low and dry forest to improve the angle of view and be able to take beautiful pictures. You have to be really, really careful, because an oversight, a misstep can be fatal . My intention in narrating this is not to scare, but to warn. I had no idea how dangerous it was to walk there and I wasn't expecting to have to do this walk. I believed that it had structured and safe viewpoints for visitors, but this is not the case. In the end, all the effort is rewarded by a simply incredible view of Navagio Beach!

STARTING POINTS TO GET TO THE BEACH

First of all, we want to make it clear that it is not possible to walk between the viewpoint and the beach. Navagio Beach is surrounded by vertical cliffs, meaning the beach is only accessible by boat. Now let's detail 3 options to get to Navagio Beach. In the map below, we have placed all these options and indicated them by colors to differentiate them. Then, we will give you more information on how to get to know the beach from one of these locations.

1. LEAVING ZAKYNTHOS TOWN (NO CAR OPTION)

As Zakynthos Town (also known as Zante) is the largest city on the island of Zakynthos, there is nothing more convenient than staying there. There are many more options for restaurants, shops and tourist attractions than on the rest of the island. Staying there is also a great option for those who do not intend to rent a car, as it is possible to walk to the Port of Zakynthos or there are excursions that pick you up at your hotel. See some options:

  • Navagio Shipwreck Beach and Blue Caves Full Day Tour
  • Navagio, Shipwreck Beach, and Blue Caves Tour 1 Day
  • Zakynthos: Pirate Cruise to Navagio Beach and Blue Caves
  • Zakynthos Island: Navagio Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves Tour  *
  • Speedboat ride to Navagio Beach and Blue Grottoes
  • Zakynthos: Pirate Cruise to Navagio Beach and Blue Caves  *
  • Small-Group Navagio Beach Tour
  • Zakynthos Island Tour by Bus
  • Full day cruise in Zakynthos
  • Full day cruise in Zakynthos  *

* departing from hotels in various cities on the island of Zakynthos

If you have plans to rent a car or ATV to get around the island (inquire about vehicle prices in Zakynthos in this link ), here are some cool options for starting points to visit Navaggio Beach:

2.  LEAVING FROM PORTO VROMI (NEAREST)

The quickest way to get to Navagio Beach is to take boat trips from Porto Vromi, located to the west of the island of Zakynthos. In addition to the shorter travel time, it is possible to get to know the blue lagoons (Blue Grottoes) along the coast during the tour. Take the opportunity to visit the incredible region of Port Limnionas (Read more at:  Greece: Porto Limnionas natural pool in Zakynthos ) which is close to Porto Vromi. You can purchase tickets for the boat trip from Porto Vromi  in this link , to secure your reservation.

Greece: How to get to know Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos

3. LEAVING SKINARIS (NORTH OF ZAKYNTHOS)

Another option to get to Navagio Beach is from the north of the island. This option is very nice because you can also take the opportunity to take the tour to the Blue Caves (Blue Caves), which I think is simply unmissable! You need to take a boat to Navagio Beach, go back to the harbor and take another boat to the Blue Caves. The complete visit lasts around 2 hours. I recommend the company  Potamitisbros boattrips .

TOURS AND EXCURSIONS TO NAVAGIO BEACH

  • When choosing your boat, I recommend opt for smaller boats from one of the nearest ports than the huge double-decker boats that also make the trip to the beach.
  • Avoid mid-day trips  (between 11 am and 3 pm), when the beach tends to get extremely crowded. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
  • Avoid going in high season (European summer – between July and August) in addition to everything being extremely crowded, accommodation is usually much more expensive. If possible, also try to avoid the rainy season (October) and Winter (November to March). The ideal is to go during the months of April to June. We went during the month of June and it was great, although it was already quite hot.

Greece: How to get to know Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos

  • Navagio Beach is super small and there are no shops on the beach . So, take your water, snacks for when you are hungry/thirst and sunscreen, as the sun is very strong and there are no umbrellas available.
  • I strongly recommend wear rubber beach shoes because Navagio is formed by large white stones that hurt the feet a lot. Also, depending on the time of your visit, it can be very hot and the rocks are very hot, making it difficult to walk around.
  • You boat trips have time to go and time to return . They will allow you to spend around 1 hour on the beach. Take a good look at your boat so you don't get confused and lose it when it's time to return.

Planning to visit the famous Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, but not sure where to start? You’ve come to the right place!

Navagio Beach in Zante, Greece, is also known as Shipwreck Beach due to the huge ship wrecked on the beach (as you may have guessed from the name). It’s one of the most famous beaches in Greece, if not all of Europe.

As such, if you’re planning a trip to Zante, it’s only natural that you will want to add this iconic spot to your Zante itinerary.

What is Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos?

Whether you call it Navagio Beach, Smuggler’s Cove, Agios Georgios (its original name it was previously known with) or Shipwreck Beach, there’s no denying the beauty of this amazing slice of coastline.

And as you can probably tell from the names, it’s a beach with a shipwreck on it. But how did it get there?

The famous Zante shipwreck is the remains of the MV Panagiotis , a ship that ran aground during bad weather in 1980. There are different rumours around how exactly this happened.

Some say it was smuggling contraband cigarettes for the Italian mafia, and was wrecked while being chased by the Greek authorities! But that’s just a story.

Either way, the wreck provides a cool contrast to the white cliffs, gleaming white sand beach and bright turquoise sea of the cove.

Plus it’s been made even more famous thanks to it featuring in the 2016 Korean TV series Descendants of the Sun , with K-drama aficionados making the pilgrimage to the famed location.

Where is Navagio Shipwreck Beach

Navagio Shipwreck Beach is located on the Northwest corner of Zakynthos Island. As we will soon see, you can’t directly access the beach via land, but you can go to its famous viewpoint by driving to this spot .

It’s a 50-minute drive from the south of the island, where most of the tourist towns like Zakynthos Town, Laganas and Keri are located.

If you want to see the Zakynthos shipwreck and the stunning beach where it sits, it’s not as simple as just rocking up with your beach towel.

Due to the beach being accessible only by boat, I’ll divide this part into two sections: the first one telling you how to get to the actual Shipwreck Beach, Zante, and the second one sharing how to get to the iconic Navagio Beach Viewpoint.

How to get to Navagio Beach

Like I said just a moment ago, there is no way to reach the actual beach via land.

This means that the only way to get to Navagio Beach in Zante is via boat, and you’re probably not going to have access to your own boat while you’re there.

So that means you’ll be taking to the high seas on a boat tour from Laganas to Shipwreck Beach (or from other parts of the island). I have listed below some of the best Shipwreck Beach tours, but will go into more detail about them in just a moment.

How to get to Shipwreck Navagio Beach viewpoint

While the beach itself is without a doubt beautiful, what most people want to see is the iconic view over it from the top of the cliffs.

After all, that shot of the shipwreck lying on the white sand, turquoise water in front of it and towering cliffs surrounding it features on everyones Europe bucket list .

How do you actually get to the Shipwreck Beach viewpoint? It’s pretty simple to drive to the viewpoint by yourself (be warned however, the road leading up to it is narrow and winding!). Simply drive to this Google Maps location .

There’s free parking area here, which is super handy, plus there’s also a food truck close to the free viewing deck, with some tables and seats in the shade.

The free viewing platform is pretty cool! It protrudes out of the cliff itself, allowing for unobstructed views of the Shipwreck Cove down below, even though the cliffs partly block the wreck itself …

How to see that iconic Shipwreck Beach view

Let’s expand a bit on Shipwreck Beach Viewpoint, as it deserves a little more detail.

The “official” viewing deck that I linked above consists of a metal platform with railings, which sticks out from the cliffs. It’s the safest way to get a fairly decent view of Shipwreck Beach.

But to be honest with you, this view isn’t the best or the iconic view of Shipwreck Beach that you will have seen in photos. And not only that — you have to queue in a long line for quite a while under the sun to see it, which is never fun.

The view over Navagio Shipwreck Beach from the

The view over Navagio Shipwreck Beach from the “official” viewing deck

There is another viewpoint, an “unofficial” one. If you look to the right of the food truck you’ll see a metal fence with a sign that says “do not pass” — but there’s also a very big hole in the fence.

Through here you’ll also see a well beaten trail, as well as numerous other tourists walking through the hole and on the trail.

If you go through the railing you will have to do a short hike for 10-15 minutes, and you’ll the get the other Shipwreck Beach viewpoint.

As soon as you look back to Shipwreck Beach, you will see the breathtaking views of Navagio Beach that you always see in photos. This “unofficial” viewpoint has no railings, no viewing deck, and no safety measures of any sort in place.

As such, if you do choose to come to this viewpoint, I advise you stick to the path and to keep a safe distance from the edge, and don’t take any risks to get the “best” photo.  People have fallen from the cliffs here while taking photos.

Best Zakynthos shipwreck tours

Of course, the most classic way to see the Zakynthos shipwreck is by taking a tour by boat to the beach itself.

However, there are so many tours that it can be a little difficult working out which one is best. Here I’ve outlined some of the best boat tours in Zakynthos , so that you can find the best one for you.

This tour to Shipwreck Beach in Zante is a pretty comprehensive option.

Not only does it take you to the beach itself, as well as the viewpoint up above, but it will also take you to a number of different sights around the island. These include the famous Blue Caves and Bochali Hill.

The first part of the tour sees you whisked to Zakynthos Town, where you’ll head up Bochali Hill for views of the port below.

From there it’s onto the Shipwreck Beach viewpoint, where you can snap pictures of the surrounding cliffs. Then you’ll hop on the boat for a 3-hour mini cruise to Navagio Beach and then onward to the Blue Caves.

There’s also a collection of other interesting sights included on the tour, including local villages like Exo Chora with its amazing 2,000-year-old olive tree!

Visiting Navagio Shipwreck Beach in Zante, Greece, on a boat tour

Visiting Navagio Shipwreck Beach in Zante, Greece, on a boat tour

So this is more of a transfer rather than a proper tour, but it’s still a good way to get from wherever you’re staying to the famous beach.

It doesn’t cover every town on the island though, covering travel from towns including Psarou, Kalamaki, Zante Town and Laganas, to Shipwreck Beach.

I’d say this is a great option if you don’t want to rent a car, but want to see the shipwreck at sunset.

From your accommodation, this transfer will take you past famous sights, with the driver on hand to explain the history of it all along the way.

They’ll take you to the top of the Shipwreck Beach viewpoint so you can see the beach in all its glory. You’ll have an hour or so to snap photos galore of a gorgeous sunset.

From Porto Vromi: Shipwreck Beach Private Boat Cruise

Feel like a tour but want a bit more privacy? Then opt for a private cruise for you and whoever you’re travelling with! This private tour to Zante’s Navagio Beach offers up an adventurous day out exploring the island’s beautiful coastline.

The first stop is at Shipwreck Beach itself, where you can have a refreshing swim in the sea, before you’ll be whisked onward to Hidden Treasure Cave — another chance to float around in the crystal-clear water.

Then you’ll head to experience marine life at White Beach, Sfogio Beach, Porto Steniti, the Blue Caves and Heart Caves. You’ll also get to see a fun rock formation at Poseidon’s Profile (the clue is in the name!).

This is another private tour , ideal for couples or families who want to have fun without worrying about other people’s itineraries and schedules.

This tour is pretty good actually, as it takes you around the whole island, not only Shipwreck Beach. Your local skipper will take you to a collection of sights dotted around Zakynthos.

These include White Beach, Sfogio Beach, the Blue Caves, Keri Caves and Turtle Island, to name just a few. Of course, you’ll also head to Shipwreck Beach for a swim in the cove.

I’d recommend booking the evening schedule, as you’ll get to see a stunning sunset as part of the tour, too!

From Porto Vromi: Navagio Shipwreck Beach Excursion by Boat

This Shipwreck Beach boat tour offers an awesome way to experience the natural landscapes of Zakynthos, without breaking the bank. It’s a great option for solo travelers, as it’s a bigger boat than the previous tours, with other people onboard, hence the lower price.

Setting sail from the bay of Porto Vromi, the boat makes its way to Navagio Beach where you’ll stop in the cove and have a chance to swim in the crystal clear waters.

But it’s not just Navagio Beach that you’ll be hitting up. There’s also the Blue Caves, where the boat will take you inside to marvel at the rock formations.

You’ll also head to a hidden beach, Sfogio, then onto another beautiful beach called Porto Steniti. This tour is the perfect way to enjoy some of the best beaches and coastlines in Zakynthos.

What can you do at Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos?

Until 2022, you could still actually go onto the beach. It was fun!

You could spend a chill day there, tanning, swimming — you know, the usual beach activities. Unfortunately, today the beach is closed, and there’s not a lot to do there anymore.

It’s the one of the most popular attractions and most famous beach of Zakynthos, but you can’t actually go on the beach. It was closed due to rock falls last year, and the increased risk of landslides.

On land, you can head to the Shipwreck Beach view point to see it all from above, and take in one of the most photographed places in Greece.

Boat tours to the beach stop nearby, and you can swim, but not for long and it’s not the same as actually hanging out on the beach.

Still, it’s a decent day trip, especially if you join one of the tour operators that takes you also to other sights on Zakynthos.

Is it worth visiting Navagio Shipwreck Beach?

If you are travelling to Greece solely to see the Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, then I would say no — it’s not worth visiting.

Nowadays there isn’t much to it, besides taking photos from the viewpoint of the rusty shipwreck on the gleaming sand.

It looks cool, it looks great in photos, but it’s not worth a trip in itself. And a reminder: it’s definitely not worth risking injury to yourself to get a photo of it!

That said, if you’re in Zakynthos anyway , and you’re wondering what to do with yourself, then of course I would say visit Shipwreck Beach. After all, it’s one of the must-see spots in Zante !

There might not be much to do, but it’s still one of the most iconic spots in Zakynthos, if not all of Greece. Plus a lot of boat tours of the island visit, so you might end up seeing Navagio Shipwreck Beach even if it wasn’t part of your itinerary!

Where to stay in Zante to visit Navagio Beach

It doesn’t really matter where you stay in Zakynthos to visit Navagio Beach. The island isn’t particularly big, even if you stay in the south in Laganas or Keri you will just drive max 1 hour to reach the viewpoint.

As such, here are some of the best places to stay in Zakynthos for every budget, and in different areas around the island.

Budget: Gerovasis Apartments with Sea View – We spent five nights here and found it to be a perfect base for exploring Zante. Located in the quiet beach town of Keri, the apartment is spacious, clean, has epic views and is fairly cheap.

Click here to book your stay at Gerovasis Apartments with Sea View!

Mid-range: Joya Luxury Villas – Even though there is Luxury in the name, this beautiful villa is actually pretty affordable, while still offering a luxury service. It sleeps up to 10 people, has a private pool, and is perfectly positioned to explore the North East coast of Zante. We stayed here for the weekend and loved it.

Luxury: Lesante Cape Resort & Villas – We had lunch here and fell in love with the venue. This 5-star hotel has beautiful little villas with private pools, amazing service, stunning views and is in a great position. Perfect to spoil yourself!
